DON’T OVERLOOK YOUR FUNDAMENTALS

Obviously as a golf professional, I give a lot of lessons and witness a lot of amateurs players practice and hit balls on the range for hours at a time. What I have found from most amateurs, is they overthink the golf swing or they ignore the obvious, the fundamentals. If you are an avid golfer and have been playing for some time, don’t ever overlook your fundamentals. When it comes to alignment we can get into a habit of aiming too far left or too far right without really knowing its happening. This happens for many reasons. Maybe we started hooking, slicing, pulling or pushing shots and rather then chalking it up to a bad swing, we compensate in our alignment. When you are lined up incorrectly it can alter your golf swing in many ways. Your sub conscious knows your not in line with your target and will make necessary adjustments to try and get the ball on line. If your swing suddenly feels off, and your shot pattern or trajectory is different, don’t panic. Take a few minutes on the range to check your fundamentals ( grip, stance, ball position and your alignment). When it comes to alignment, lay two clubs down on the ground. They should remind you of railroad tracks. The outside club should be aimed at the target. The second club (club closest to you) should be lined up parallel left ( for a right handed golfer). Make sure your feet, hips and shoulders are on the inside club, again aligned parallel left of the target. You do not want your feet, hips and shoulders aiming towards your target. When the clubs are on the ground, it will be pretty easy to see. When you we go out to play without the clubs, we want to make sure we have brought our alignment to the course. Pick a spot 2 to 3 feet in front of you that is in line with your target. This could be an old tee, divot, brown piece of grass, almost anything. Now make sure your body is parallel left of that spot. Its a lot easier to check your lines with something 2 to 3 feet away then it is to check your final target that might be 180-200 yards away. 2022 SECURE ACT REGULATIONS

NAVIGATING THE PROPOSED REGULATIONS FOR IRA OWNERS The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (or “SECURE Act”) was enacted on December 20, 2019. The SECURE Act modified the rules for how retirement accounts, including IRAs, are distributed to beneficiaries after the death of the original owner of the account. In February of 2022, the Department of the Treasury released proposed regulations to clarify the application of the SECURE Act. The proposed regulations contained some surprises for estate planning practitioners. Prior to the SECURE Act, the general rule was that if the decedent designated an individual person as the beneficiary of his IRA, then the beneficiary would be able to gradually take distributions out of the IRA account on a schedule based on his or her own life expectancy. The SECURE Act changed this general rule for most beneficiaries (some important exceptions being surviving spouses, disabled persons, and minors). Under the current SECURE Act, the general rule for an inherited IRA is that it must be completely distributed to the beneficiary by the end of the calendar year which includes the tenth anniversary of the original owner’s death (the “10-year rule”). Practitioners have interpreted this to mean that such a beneficiary is free to take distributions from the IRA according to any schedule he pleases (e.g., all at once, or in equal yearly increments) so long as the account is emptied by end of the tenth year. The recently proposed regulations clarify that if the original account holder of the IRA has died after the time that he was required to begin taking distributions, then his designated beneficiary would still need to take minimum distributions out during each of the ten years, according to either his own life expectancy or the life expectancy of the deceased account holder, whichever is longer. Many owners of an IRA choose their spouses as the beneficiary. The beneficiary spouse may take distributions from the inherited IRA along a schedule according to his or her own life expectancy (or if longer, and the deceased spouse was already required to take distributions, according to the statistical life expectancy of the deceased spouse.) Many practitioners have interpreted SECURE to mean that upon the death of the beneficiary’s surviving spouse, the beneficiary designated by the surviving spouse would have a whole ten years in which to take out the rest of the account. However, proposed regulations clarify that upon the death of the surviving spouse, his or her designated beneficiary would only have until the earlier of the end of the surviving spouse’s life expectancy, the end of the original owner’s statistical life expectancy (if distributions had begun before the original owner’s death) or ten years after the death of the surviving spouse. An IRA owner may name a trust as the beneficiary of his IRA. If the trust meets certain requirements regarding the identifiability of its ben-

eficiaries, then the underlying beneficiaries of the trust may be treated as the designated beneficiaries of the IRA. The criteria for which beneficiaries of a trust are counted as designated beneficiaries of the IRA is significant because the rules require that, in the instance of multiple designated beneficiaries, the life expectancy used for calculating the schedule of distributions (though still subject to the “10-year rule” in most instances) is that of the oldest designated beneficiary. The general rule is that for a trust that does not require distributions from the IRA to immediately be distributed out of the trust, even residual beneficiaries of the trust (who do not currently receive anything from the trust) must be considered designated beneficiaries of the IRA. The proposed regulations would narrow the field of trust beneficiaries who would be considered designated beneficiaries of an IRA by deeming certain types of beneficiaries to be disregarded. First, the proposed rules allow that a beneficiary of a trust whose interest in the IRA is contingent upon the death of another beneficiary, whose own interest is itself residuary, can be disregarded as a designated beneficiary: roughly, second-tier remainder beneficiaries do not count. Second, if the current trust beneficiary is likely to exhaust the IRA during his lifetime, even first-tier remainder beneficiaries can be disregarded. In particular, if the terms of the trust require that the entire IRA be distributed to a current beneficiary by the later of (1) calendar year following the calendar year of the original IRA owner’s death or (2) the end of calendar year in which said current beneficiary reaches age 31, then the contingent beneficiaries who would take in the event that the current beneficiary died before receiving a full distribution of the IRA are not counted a designated beneficiary for purposes of determining minimum distribution that must be taken each year. In a nutshell, time is of the essence to review your IRA distribution plan as compliance is more difficult than before and we must confirm that your financial advisor(s) have your correct and up-to-date beneficiary designations. Please raise this issue at our next annual check-up or sooner.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW WHO’S THE BEST IN 2022-2023?

ALABAMA Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young returns at quarterback, as does linebacker Will Anderson, who led college football in sacks and TFLs last fall With the acquisitions of Eli Ricks CB and WR Jermaine Burton, Bama can definitely fill some lost holes to the draft and with Nick Saban in the helm, they have to be beaten to win.

A perennial power has lost a QB and both coordinators. Facing a tough schedule with Wake Forest, Notre Dame, NC State and Miami, they may have their hands full, but they like Ohio State and Alabama always find a way to reload, replace and win! 5. MICHIGAN

OHIO STATE With Heisman finalist quarterback CJ Stroud, back TreVeyon Henderson, and wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba in addition to a ton of other elite receiver options, Ohio State always reloads with the best in the country! Ohio State has speed on both sides to compete with anyone in the country and putting away the theory that the Big 10 is just big and physical. Jim Knowles, the architect of Oklahoma State’s No. 3 ranked defense, who Ryan Day brought to Columbus to recreate that magic for this team. This shores up a defense of young super talented players with some real direction. 3. GEORGIA College football’s defending national champion should be a major force again , but have lost significant players on a superior defense. Kirby Smart has done an excellent recruiting job to replace these amazing players, so we will all see how this plays out? Stetson Bennett will return to the quarterback position, but this time around the Bulldogs won’t have 5-star JT Daniels in reserve after he transferred out. Bennett has 2 of the best tight ends in the country with Bowers and Washington.

After a tremendous season and beating Ohio State for the 1st time in 8 years and crushing Iowa on the Big 10 championship, they had a realization in the playoffs against Georgia. They lose a lot of talent on the defensive line as well as running back position and some assistant coaches, but Jim Harbaugh is fighting the fight of his life to resurrect a great program after what he has done with Stanford and the San Francisco 49ers.

6. TEXAS A&M Jimbo Fisher has been steadily building momentum during his time at A&M, last season beating No. 1 Alabama, and this offseason signing what analysts call the highest-rated class in college football recruiting history. This should be Fisher’s best roster at A&M when accounting for returning talent and the additions he made in the 2022 cycle. He’ll have some losses on the defensive side of the ball, but also transfer quarterback Max Johnson, who led LSU’s upset against this Aggie team a year ago to work with a solid backfield and receiver rotation.
