000 SCENARIO MAPPING -
MArch 6 2013/14 John Francis Levery
001 SCENARIO MAPPING A
What, Where, Why? Responsiveness: The author has a deep interest in the way that individuals perceive, analyse and respond to various situations. The interactions that people make and the resulting responses can vary in multiple ways. It is the author’s understanding that often individuals can overestimate their ability to fully perceive and analyse situations, an often underestimate the true gravity of their response and its rippling effects. The project aims to explore how a building can be responsive at different scales and to different stimuli, from individualistic opinions of the few to nation wide cultural modifications, from disused yard space to urban strategies. It intends to create a buildng that is not merely multi-functional or highly flexible, but perceptive and quickly responsive to its physical and social contexts. The building’s physical nature should change with it contexts, and it should be openly connected through physical, social, and to an extent virtual networks.
Why the arts? The arts are something that is subjective, and incomparable to other kinds of commodity. Each piece of visual art, or music, or performance is one or more personalities combined, creating something that is highly appreciated by some individuals. Because it is hard to put a value on art, looking for interactions and the various responses between artist and viewer might create a better form of valuation, taking art away from charity funding as it is realised to be an important and valuable product by individuals and for others. The project intends to make the arts a valued spiritual product of individuals, to work away from the prejudiced view of arts being a luxury for those that can afford it, and to drive individuals to re-assess their perceptions and values, adjusting their analysis and responses via their interaction with art.
Analogies: Due to the intelligent and responsive natures of the building, and its ability to create its own identity in its contexts, it has been called the ‘Sentience Project’, as it tries to act more like a manifestation of human wills that a static physical point in time. Likewise, its sub-component operations have been named after parts of the body. The ‘face’ of the project is responsible for contact with The ‘guts’ of the project are responsible for much of the the public and for much of the responsive aspects of the background workings, connected to the face but not primarily building; visible: • (Observation) - Eyes • (Respire) - Lungs • (Transmission) - Mouth • (Assimilate) - Stomach Why New Cross? • (Sensitivity) - Synapse • (Cadence) - Heart New Cross (as well as its neighbor Deptford) has been chosen due to its high rate of artistic output. 002 SCENARIO MAPPING B
What is New Cross? Photos have been used to further extend the understanding of the New Cross Deptford area, and the opportunities that can be used to make more efficient use of space. New Cross Identity: Looking at the map of relevent locations acording to the New Cross Station information board.
Paint: Paint in New Cross and Deptford is used to alter perception of space. From illegal graffiti to organised murals, much of the essence of New Cross is transmitted through its painting.
Juxtaposition: New developments new to older developments.
Alternation: Changing the status quo.
Opportunity Spaces: Spaces that are little used and present an opportunity for development.
Spatial Responses: Where space has been used for a different function from which it was originally intended.
003 SCENARIO MAPPING C
Physical Networks Because of the Sentience Projects, Nature, awareness will have to spread beyond the locality to ensure effective results. The chart to the right (taken from the Department for Transport Commuting and Business Travel Factsheet April 2011) Transport through the area will contribute towards the project goals by expanding the network of people that are aware demonstrates how London commuters travel differently from most other regions, most likely due to the volume of of the projects in the area that they are able to contribute to. commuters attempting to travel around the city. Public transport methods including rail, bus and other rail (likely referring to the London Underground) are much more popular forms of commuter transport.

Railway track Railway Station (Referring to diagram left) New Cross sits on one of the major routes into central London, and New Cross Road connects a significant proportion of South-East London to the centre. As a result, the road is highly populated with private vehicle and bus users on a regular commute. This could provide a significant segment of the expanse of awareness if these commuters are communicated with on their voyage through New Cross

004 SCENARIO MAPPING D
Existing Scenario Starting a lifestyle as a full-time artist is difficult, as th art form is highly subjective and so success can be very difficult Because of the personal nature of the artists’ product and the subjective nature of the audience, it becomes important to to determine. Also, production of art is very personal to the artist, so adjusting the art to make it more marketable is often expand the connected network of the artist to as many audience members as possible. Currently this can be difficult, as not a choice that the artist wishes to make, as this often defeats the point of their desire to produce art. showcases (such as galleries or venues) choose art based on the gallery perspectives of what art pieces would best suit audiences, and while this optimises connections for the artists they choose,, it cuts many of the less popular artists away from their potential wider audience. This limits diversity in art, as the agent responsible for showcasing chooses based on their intention to satisfy a wide audience, rather than connect as many audience member to as many artists as possible.
As a result of the difficulty in maintaining a full-time art career, many artists take on second jobs to fund their living and their production of art forms. While this allows the artist to continue producing, it has the negative effects of limiting their production, and also devalues the importance of art for both the artist and the audience as it becomes a secondary activity to financial needs.

005 SCENARIO MAPPING E
Proposed Scenarios
Proposed Scenario Stage 1 Stage 1 involves the connection to priority actors and agents in a virtual network, headed by a group called the (Contemplate) Establishment Collective. The (Contemplate) Collective develops connections with local artists, art students and agents within the New Cross/Deptford area, gathering an awareness from stakeholder parties and seeking an informational foundation for the Introducing the (Contemplate) Collective Sentience Project to develop.
An information network: The (Contemplate) Collective will begin as a contact point between institutions and artists, gathering information and posting news topics regarding arts in the area. It will serve as a good introduction for new artists looking to set up in the area. This part of the project will likely include using some physical marketing material as well as word of mouth.
A development network: The (Contemplate) Collective will also work closely with the Lewisham council and Goldsmiths to begin establishing its Sentience Project theme with the two institutions, gaining support and advice for its ultimate goals of a Brickstarter -style project.

Lung Reprocessing is responsible for the collection and recycling service, It offers a scrap service of skip hire and individual collections to cover a broad scale of scrapping needs. It then takes materials that can be re-used for future construction purposes and holds them in construction materials storage, while other useful materials that are unsuitable for construction are kept in the Stomach Material Bank. Anything else can be taken to a scrap merchant for selling on.. Lung Reprocessing offers low-carbon scrap collection for larger developments, a competitive price structure for small projects due its it’s locality and not-for profit business plan, and a free collection service for unwanted furniture and materials that can still be useful. It also offers part-time work that can be made available to artists that require some additional income.
Proposed Scenario Stage 2 Stage 2 sets the initial financial foundations for further development. It involves creating two related businesses which Financial foundations contribute to the upcoming project, a collection and recycling service called (Respire) Reprocessing, and a materials exchange for artists called (Assimilate) Materials Bank. Initially, Goldsmiths University will purchase Site A in order to Introducing expand their short courses facilities in response to the recession, and sell part of the site to the (Contemplate) Collective (Respire) for repayment over the coming years (Goldsmiths would likely also have an interest in how this project might perform, as (Assimilate) it has direct relevance to the arts and even the short courses that will be taking place in the new facility on the site).
The Stomach Materials Bank offers an exchange for art materials that will trade on store credits. Subscription is free, artists can find useful materials that have been collected by Lung Reprocessing and buy them, or trade in their own materials that other artists might find useful for cash. The Stomach Materials Bank uses these transactions to make revenue to cover administration.

Proposed Scenario Stage 2 (cont.) Site A provides a good area for development, as it has close proximity to commuter facilities (such as Sainsburys and the Financial foundations New Cross retail park) and Goldsmiths University, and connects directly to the major commuter routes in the area. It also features a concreted platform, which will be beneficial as buildings need to be added, subtracted and relocated on the site.

Proposed Scenario Stage 4 Stage 4 begins construction on Brickstarter-style proposals that are successfully crowd-funded, splitting the capital into: Proposals realised • (Sensitivity) Experimentation creates spaces to test and modify the proposals before completion. • (Cadence) Support Infrastructure will provide proposals with workspace to back artists that are involved. • (Respire) Reprocessing will provide maintenance materials. • Local artists can work with (Respire) to maintain the proposals.
The project will make use of unused space around New Cross and Deptford, demonstrating how community funded projects can renew derelict spaces in a positive way and at a low cost. The proposals will be built legally (although perhaps somewhat non-conventionally) to introduce new ways of thinking about building in public space. This will drive a virtual feedback loop that sees members of the public more wiling and able to contribute with ideas and finance on how to improve their local area.

After a successful Brickstarter-style campaign, all of the projects have gained sufficient funding and approval to be constructed. Mini-Theatre
A temporary mini-theatre will potentially be constructed in Fordham Park, regularly showing local performers.

Project Spaces
Project spaces are potentially constructed in little used spaces next to Deptford Rail Station. These project spaces are intended to last over a two year period, adding value to the area. They are created in response to (Observation) Research to suit the demand for the space, and placed in a high foot-fall area to maximise marketing opportunities for the resident artists and the project.
As public interest in the New Cross arts increases with publicity from the project, increased demand for casual arts courses has lead to the establishment of a dedicated workshop. This will potentially be established in an abandoned building on Stanley Street. With close proximity to the primary school, parents can take the course as part of their daily routine, and after school arts courses can also take place. The workshops will be constructed for an intended 2-year period, before being sold for alternative development.

Proposed Scenario Stage 5 Stage 5 sees the Sentience Project seek to move from Site A. It sets up assemblies for proposing future use of the Moving on space as it hands over the site to community ownership. The community and local artists choose to convert the space into visual artists studios and workshops, built for a 10-year period, after which a second assembly will be arranged to reinvent the site again.
