RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

JULY EDITION 2024

Welcome to Summer Fun in Reston!

This is your guide to “play” as you Live, Work, Play and Get Involved in Reston. This issue is packed full of opportunities to make summer memories with Reston Association (RA).

This time last year, we launched our Community Survey. One of RA’s priorities is to optimize the use of land and investments related to leisure opportunities for our Members. As part of that process, RA hired a market research firm to conduct a quantitative survey to collect feedback. The survey captured not only how Members are currently using our parks and recreational (P&R) facilities and programs but also how they would hope to use them in the future and what they would like to see in terms of potential new P&R facilities down the line.

The insights gathered through this survey have provided the foundation for RA’s planning process. Highlights are below:

ƒ Members who use RA’s P&R facilities are more satisfied with RA and the related value of their assessments.

ƒ Members are far more interested in maintaining and, in some cases, expanding usage opportunities for current P&R facilities than they are in investing in new facilities.

ƒ RA’s paved pathways are used by virtually all Members; they are used more frequently than any of our other P&R facilities, and they are our most widely valued P&R resource.

ƒ RA’s pools are used by almost 7 out of 10 Members; they are the second most frequently used facility type and are widely valued by Members.

ƒ RA’s lakes and ponds and our parks and playgrounds are used by more than 75% of our Members; however, usage of these facilities is less frequent than that of our trails and pools.

ƒ Roughly 40% of Members use courts at least occasionally for pickleball and/or tennis, and their usage frequency is typically half that of the trails and about 30% less than that of the pools.

ƒ Members are generally pleased with tennis/pickleball facilities, although there are issues with court access, especially during peak times.

ƒ Members are less pleased with their usage of pool facilities, particularly around the limited current pool season length and hours. They identified this as RA’s most pressing area for P&R improvement.

We carefully incorporated that feedback for this 2024 season, and we’re pleased to report that more than 400 hours have been added to the 2024 pool schedule across each of the four districts. Additionally, as cost was reported as a barrier, Member Recreation Passes are now included as part of the annual assessment. A Recreation Pass provides access to pools, tennis and pickleball and can be activated online at www.reston.org. Additionally, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, along with RA Staff, are reviewing trail signage and the natural trail maps to refresh. You can expect to see additional changes in response to the survey in the 2025 season.

Our team always welcomes suggestions to provide activities for your enjoyment. Please feel free to reach out to RA-DIRENVREC@reston.org.

Enjoy the summer and find the fun with Reston Association!

RESTON CAMPS FAQS

What is your cancellation/ refund policy?

All cancellations must be in writing to the Camp Registrar at camp@reston.org. Please remember DEPOSITS ARE NONREFUNDABLE. *Cancellations requested MORE THAN 14 days before the start of a camp session will be equal to a 50% refund (minus deposit) *Cancellations requested LESS THAN 14 days before the start of a camp session will equal no refund. See the 2024 Parent Handbook for complete details.

When are camp payments due?

Payment is due in full TWO WEEKS before the start of the camp session. Your child will be sent home if payment has not been received or a payment arrangement worked out with the Camp Registrar.

Can I switch to a different camp?

Absolutely, as long as there is space available, and your child is within the camp’s age group. All requests must be in writing to the Camp Registrar at camp@ reston.org.

What is special about Reston Camps?

This summer we celebrate our 50 th anniversary! We hire camp staff with a passion for working, playing, and teaching children. Many of our staff are local teachers. All staff are CPR/ AED/first aid certified, have passed criminal background checks, a Central Registry Check, fingerprinting, and have had pre-camp training in child abuse, positive behavior management, camp safety, and ongoing training in camp programming.

Does my child need a camp shirt?

Campers attending Junior Day Camp, Day Camp, Sportsters, Adventure Camp and CITs must wear a Reston Camps camp shirt. Shirts may be purchased in the Member Services office. We highly suggest purchasing multiple shirts so that you don’t have to wash shirts each night.

Do you offer Extended Care?

Unfortunately, we no longer offer Extended Care.

I am on vacation for 1 of the 2 weeks of a camp session. Can I get credit for the missed week?

No, we do not prorate for missed days. You must pay for both weeks, but it is ok to only attend one.

What if the camp I want to sign up for has a waitlist?

If a camp session is sold out, you should add your child’s name to the waiting list online on the WebTrac website. Reston Camps will contact you if space becomes available.

How will I know if space opens on the waitlist?

You will be contacted via email if a space becomes available and your child is next on the waitlist. You may be contacted at any time, right up until the week before the camp starts. You will be given 24 hours to respond before the next person on the waitlist is contacted. If you accept the available spot, you will be expected to pay the deposit (or full payment) within 24 hours, or your registration will be withdrawn.

Do you allow visitors or volunteers at camp?

For the safety and security of our campers and staff, all visitors must be pre-approved by the Camp Director or Recreation Manager.

What if my child has a disability?

Reston Camps welcome campers with disabilities. To best accommodate your child, please contact Katherine Caffrey, Recreation Manager, at kcaffrey@reston.org so we can schedule a time to meet and discuss your child’s needs.

Will my child go swimming during camp?

All camps go swimming at Reston Association pools during the camp day, except for Nature Tots, Walkers Rangers and Incrediflix.

All campers are given a swim test by RA Lifeguards on the first day they visit the pool, every session. Further details will be provided to parents via email before the start of camp.

Is camp held during inclement weather?

YES! All camp locations have inclement weather policies and Emergency Action Plans. Indoor locations are available for those camps based outdoors. Please remember, that drop-off and pick-up locations will always be at the base camp location. On code red days, we increase time in the shade and offer additional water breaks, pool time, and indoor programming. We do not prorate days not attended due to weather.

If my child attends the same camp for multiple weeks, will they be doing the same thing each time?

NO! Junior Day Camp and Day Camp have different camp themes and activities in each session. Adventure Camp has new and different adventures each week. Occasionally, campers may visit our more popular activities more than once over the summer, but the weekly schedule will not be the same. Our other camps offer different programming and activities each week. Your camper will meet new friends each session - they will have a great time!

Can my child be in a camp group with all of their friends?

There is a question in CampDoc asking parents if there is ONE friend their child would like to be placed in a group with. BOTH parents (the one asking, as well as the one they are requesting to be placed with) MUST fill out this question or the CampDoc program will NOT match them up. We do our best to accommodate special placement requests but due to the many demographics in a camp (age being the most important one), we can not guarantee requests.

I have questions about camp, who do I contact?

The Parent Handbook contains the answers to a majority of questions parents ask. If you are unable to find a specific answer, please reach out to the Camp Registrar at camp@reston.org or 703-435-6551.

JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON

Volunteer Reston (VR) housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together.

Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills to a variety of engaging projects and endeavors.

CORPORATE DAY OF SERVICE

VR Corporate Volunteer Program offers expertise in community service to corporations by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project. Sponsorship starts at $500.

NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL?

Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups.

ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES

Reston Association provides environmental education and stewardship opportunities to volunteers who want to help restore and enhance our community.

Invasive Species Removal Workdays

This removal opportunity involves removing invasive species and non-native plants throughout our natural areas, allowing native plants to thrive. We’ll provide tools, like loppers and weed wrenches, or you can bring your own. This is a rewarding project for

individuals or groups, including kids 13 years old or younger if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

For all workdays: RA will train volunteers on how to use tools. Volunteers must pre-register.

All Ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult during their volunteer service.

Time for all workdays: 10 a.m.Noon

Sites:

ƒ Saturday, July 27, Water Pointe Lane Natural Area

ƒ Saturday, Sept. 28, Colts Neck Rec. Area

Reston Sites:

ƒ Snakeden Branch UpperHunters Woods Village Center

Age requirement: All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

This annual cleanup of trash and litter in streams, rivers and beaches is part of the international Coastal Cleanup and is the largest event held by Clean Virginia Waterways.

Tons of trash end up in the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay every year from our watersheds. Help keep Reston looking beautiful by joining RA for the Fall Stream Cleanup.

ƒ Let’s do our part. It is amazing what a group of people can accomplish in a few hours.

ƒ Participate in this statewide and international effort dedicated to cleaning the world’s waterway

ƒ By simply clearing out litter from our watersheds, your contributions will have a significant impact on restoring Reston’s streams.

Stream Monitoring Program

RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams or attend a one-time stream monitoring workshop to learn about the program. Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, but it also provides an opportunity to

make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality.

If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. Email cdickens@reston.org with the message “add me to the stream monitors list” to begin receiving emails.
