RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

Greetings!

It’s hard to believe that we are already saying farewell to the busy summer season. It was wonderful to see so many of you out and about this summer, whether at our pools, courts or at any of our many events. This was the first year in some time in which we had all 15 of our pools open, and due to that, along with the inclusion of Recreation Passes in assessment payments, we were thrilled to see over ten thousand more Members taking advantage of these amenities.

As we now turn our attention to the autumn season, I encourage you to take time to enjoy some of Reston Associations many outdoor activities. Autumn is a wonderful season to explore our 55 miles of wooded trails or visit our 72-acre Nature Center. Enjoy a guided tour to learn more about the plants, birds and other wildlife that are part of the Reston community. Join us for a trip to a winery or to a musical performance. Our tennis and pickleball courts are more popular than ever; whether you’re new to our courts or a seasoned expert, our courts are a great place to get some exercise and meet new friends. Lace up your running shoes for the Friends of Reston’s annual Fall 5K event or bring your four-legged friends to our annual Howl-o-ween party. There are plenty of opportunities for all ages and interests.

And of course, we can’t wait to showcase the return of Winterfest. This three-day community event at Brown’s Chapel Park is a fantastic way to kick off the holiday season, and this year’s event is expected to be even bigger than last year. Enjoy the giant Light Up the Park walk (with even more lights this year), as well as the Enchanted Forest, the Santa Experience, s’mores by the firepit and some wonderful food and beverage options. New this year – look out for live musical performances, photo ops at the Grinch’s Village and more.

These amazing events and programs happen through the help of our incredible volunteers, and there are many ways you can join the fun. Take part in a trail cleanup effort or food drive. Volunteer your time by helping with registration at the Fall 5K or being a mascot’s assistant at Winterfest. There are dozens of ways you can truly share in making these community events a success.

As always, we invite you to share your ideas for any new programs or initiatives we should consider at Reston Association. It’s a great time to Live, Work, Play and Get Involved in Reston.

VOLUNTEER RESTON

JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON

Volunteer Reston (VR), housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together.

Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills to a variety of engaging projects and endeavors.

CORPORATE DAY OF SERVICE

VR’s Corporate Volunteer Program offers expertise in community service to corporations by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project.

NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL?

Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups. This also includes scouting organizations that need to complete a community service project.

Contact us to get involved by sharing your talents and skills with others; we can always use a helping hand at our community events, environmental projects and events at the Nature Center. We understand that people have different availabilities, so you can serve in an ongoing position or just serve at a onetime event.

ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES

Reston Association provides environmental education and stewardship opportunities to volunteers who want to help restore and enhance our community.

Invasive Species Removal Workdays

A variety of non-native, invasive plant species are present in RA’s natural areas. By their nature, these plants can take over an area quickly and threaten our native plant communities and the wildlife that depends on them.

Join one of our workday events to learn how you can help control non-native, invasive plants and preserve the health of our natural areas! Instruction and tools will be provided. Workdays are led by RA Environmental Resource staff.

For All Workdays: RA will train volunteers on how to use tools. Volunteers must pre-register.

All Ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult during their volunteer service.

Stream Monitoring Program

RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams or attend a one-time stream monitoring workshop to learn about the program.

Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, but it also provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality.

Upcoming Dates:

Thursday, Oct. 3, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Age Requirement: All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. Email cdickens@reston.org with the message “add me to the stream monitors list” to begin receiving emails.
