Giving Thanks Is More Than A Once-a-Year Event Archbishop Demetrios by Father John Vlahos As we prepare for the national celebration of Thanksgiving, I wanted to offer a few thoughts on the essential component of gratitude in our lives. The fact that we are of the Christian faith AND citizens of the greatest country in the world and living in peace and safety are ample reasons for us to feel an immense sense of gratitude towards God. And while we are filled with heartfelt awe and wonder at the great blessings that God has bestowed upon us, we cannot help but feel appreciation and admiration for all those who have brought Orthodoxy and America to where they are today. Our religion and our country are
what they are because of those saintly men and women who have gone before us to ensure that Orthodoxy remained pure and a vibrant witness to the world and those valiant men and women that ensured that America would be the land of the free and the home of the brave. As President John F. Kennedy so eloquently stated, "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." It is our divine calling to provide all that we can for the needs of Orthodoxy and America. Future generations are counting on us to lay good, strong foundations that they will then be able to build upon and enhance. We need each other.

But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.” In this way we For a September Sunday Liturgy, our Parish once develop an attitude of gratiagain was elated to welcome His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America. Occupy Cedar Swamp Road - Giving Our Time & Talents by Jim Gabriel Parish Council President Recent weeks have seen a sudden burst of Occupy movements which, in their own words, “empowers real people to create real change from the bottom up…because we don't need Wall Street and we don't need politicians to build a better society.” I am thrilled to report that I was part of exactly such an occupation recently, as our GOYANs spent the night occupying our Fellowship Hall while participating in a spiritual retreat, and a few of us slightly older teens were allowed to join them as chaperones. Engaging our youth in our faith is, I believe, the best single way to empower real people to “create real change from the bottom up”, and a cornerstone for “build[ing] a better society”. Starting with an icebreaker, and continuing through their discussion session with Father
John, our youth discussed their feelings and their faith in an event that continued with social activities and a late night movie on our big screen, combining κοινονια with μαρτυρια, two of the core areas of orthodoxy. The retreat was just the latest in a series of important recent events impacting the youth of our parish. In September, we welcomed a number of new advisors the Youth Commission that is led with love and enthusiasm by Nickie Demos and Debbie Catacosinos. In October, we hosted the first annual Youth Conference for the Direct Archdiocesan District, welcoming youth advisors from parishes spanning Long Island, the boroughs and Westchester. Just a day before the conference, the National Youth Committee recommended to the Archdiocesan Council that Project Generation be adopted as a national project. While it was not specifically a youth event, I cannot help to also mention our recent Thanos Petrelis
concert at this point. The evening, planned as an anniversary celebration for our entire parish, featured a stage full of youth dancing enthusiastically with the star recording artist. Watching, and in some cases, joining them on stage turned back the clock for all of us as we returning to our YAL years, at least in spirit. I want to thank Lisa DiPinto for initiating this effort and leading the charge, and the entire Concert Committee for making it a reality. We will have pictures and more information in the next edition of Koinonia this December. We can all follow the example set by our youth. We can find activities that suit each one of us by engaging in the ministries of our parish. The more we get involved, the more opportunity we have to make new friends. Whether the activity we pick is focused on service, worship or social activities, we grow as individuals and as a parish by participating. By the time this goes to press, we shall be commencing with
HOPE Activities Are Well Underway
by Millie Gianoukakis, Advisor Children ages 4, 5, and 6 are invited to join our HOPE (Holy Orthodox Primary Education) ministry. The mission of HOPE is to strengthen the relationship of young Orthodox Christians with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The four elements of worship, fellowship, service, and witness will be integrated into the program. The meetings will involve prayer, minilessons with movement and discussion, arts and crafts, snack, and play time. We will meet once a month, on the following Saturday
mornings, from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.: 11/6, 12/4, 1/8, 2/5, 3/5, 4/2, and 5/7. We will learn children’s prayers, read parts of the Bible, paint ceramic crosses, decorate cute scarecrow buckets, write poetry, learn about the lives of several Saints, make chocolate lollipops, and create icons. Also, we will be taking a few fun trips, such as playing mini-golf. If you have any questions, or need more information, please contact advisor Millie Gianoukakis at hawaiianhoneymoon2000@yahoo.com. 2012 Stewardship month. We’ve always made the mistake of associating Stewardship with the solicitation and collection of finances. Stewardship is about much more – it is about our fulfilling our mission as true Christian Stewards, giving of our time and talents, as well as treasure. When you receive your Stewardship Card, take your time before filling in your pledge. Look first at our ministry list. Ask yourself “what would I like to spend more time doing?” Indicate these areas on the card. If you think something’s missing, let us know. I suspect that we all have a plethora of differing opinions on those other occupations, and I don’t wish to turn this into a political column. But I think we can all agree on the tremendous value of empowering our parishioners and our parish to create real change, because we do need our Lord and our faith to help us build a better society. In other words, let’s all Occupy Cedar Swamp Road!
Holy Resurrection GOYA Supports "Invisible Children" Outreach At a Holy Resurrection GOYA meeting this month, members were introduced to an organization called Invisible Children. This organization helps war-affected regions in Central Africa, through many programs such as the “Legacy Scholarship Fund” where money makes secondary school and university available to young students in Uganda who show leadership and promise, but who cannot afford to go to school without this help. GOYA decided to donate to this fund, providing an average cost of tuition for a student to go to secondary school. Our GOYA members also watched a moving short film called “Tony” and met a woman from Uganda who was impacted from this conflict, along with three Invisible Children “roadies” (young adults who travel for months at a time to give presentations that educate youth about this crisis in Central Africa). Invisible Children works to end a conflict that has been going on in Africa for 25 years, that forces child soldiers, who can be as young as 9 years old, to fight and commit the most unimaginable atrocities. Holy Resurrection Joins Annual CROP Hunger Walk By Sophia Niarchos Several Church of the Holy Resurrection parishioners joined dozens of other Christians on Saturday morning, October 15, to benefit the Church World Service Nassau County CROP Hunger Walk in Eisenhower Park. Dr. Michael Pettei, his wife Fotini and his mother Kathleen, Mrs. Maria Verveniotis, Mrs. Jeannette Christodoulou and Mrs. Sophia Niarchos represented our parish with their walking shoes on, while many other parishioners who couldn’t attend donated a total of nearly $1,000 to the cause. A substantial portion of this amount was contributed by St. Catherine’s Philoptochos. “Donations were also made by area merchants,” Mrs. Niarchos noted. “These included North Shore Farms of Glen Cove, PathmarkGreenvale and Sergio’s Pizzeria in Old Brookville. And Karaoke Kare brought music to the post-walk gathering. The Nassau County CROP
Hunger Walk is one of approximately 1,800 such Walks across the United States. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised at each walk remains in the local community. The local recipient of the more than $7,000 raised through this year’s Nassau County CROP Hunger Walk is the Long Island Council of Churches’ Freeport Food Pantry, which provides food for more than 1200 people each month. The walk was organized by the Orthodox Church of America’s Holy Trinity Church in East Meadow under the leadership of Arlene Kallaur. More than 70 other walkers from St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Garden City, St. Gregory of Nyssa Carpatho-Russian Church in Seaford, and youth members of the Malankara Indian Orthodox Church student movement participated as well. “The Walks have been taking place for more than 40 years,” John Paterakis, first vice-chair of Church World Services and chanter at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy
Trinity noted. “They are communitywide events bringing together religious groups, businesses, schools and others to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world. CWS is a relief and development consortium of 37 Orthodox, Protestant and Anglican communions, one of which is the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. CWS has been consistently rated as a highly efficient organization by such monitors as GuideStar and Charity Navigator. The funds it raises are applied to its primary work of alleviating hunger through development and humanitarian aid, assistance to refugees and placement of refugees granted asylum in the United States, and emergency assistance in disaster situations. It is currently on the ground working with partners on rebuilding in the aftermath of the earthquakes in Japan and Haiti, as well as supporting victims of the famine in East Africa and flooding in Pakistan. If you would like to donate to the

Meadow thanks those in our parish who contributed to the 2nd Annual Nassau County CROP Hunger Walk at Eisenhower Park on October 15 for their role in reaching the $7,000 goal established for the walk. "Your team contributed $944, a very good sum for first-time participation. Please congratulate and thank them," she wrote in an e-mail, expressing her hope that we will want to walk again next year and bring others with us. Sophia Niarchos, Resurrection Team Captain, thanks our St. Catherine's Philoptochos; .Jeannette Christodoulou, Dr. Michael and Fotini Pettei, and Mrs. Kathleen Pettei for walking; and North Shore FarmsGlen Cove, Pathmark-Greenvale, Sergio's Pizzeria and Karaoke Kare for their contributions of food, drink and music.

Holy Resurrection Greek School Starts a New Year by Mrs. Elizabeth Horton, Advisor On September 14, day of the Holy Cross, our Greek School opened its doors. Children gathered at our church and were blessed by Father John for the beginning of a new school year. Happy little voices were heard, excited to meet their Greek friends from last year and to greet their new teachers. Some of them had just returned from vacations in Greece, suntanned by the Greek sun and full of stories about the islands or other places they had just visited. Were they going to keep that first smile in the following months to come? The answer is yes, since our school has improved in so many ways. New this year is the use of the Archdiocese books. Children are introduced to a more contemporary method of language learning, where vocabulary and grammar are part of our daily surroundings. Living in a digital era, learning in our school is also reinforced by various videos and updated digital materials. This would have not been possible without the generous donation of Mac Laptops from Mrs. Anne Alexandrou. Also this year, starting from the lower levels up to the graduating class, our children will not only learn about our Greek holidays and cultural customs, but will also learn about
Aesop Fables, Greek Mythology, Ancient Greece, Byzantine history and Modern Greek history. Another new change in our curriculum this year is our Tutorial help. Teachers take turns in providing the children with extra help with their learning. As a result, children not only feel comfortable in class, but they also have the opportunity to graduate, in a short time, to a higher class level that is better aligned with their interests and age bracket. Our first school event was on Sunday, October 30th after Liturgy. Children of the Regents class will revive the historical events of OXI Day, while the rest of the school will perform traditional Greek Dances. ΖΗΤΩ ΤΟ 1940 !

Holy Resurrection Sunday School Welcomes Students Every Week By Tina Mihaltses, Director Sunday School has begun and new registrations are accepted every week. This year the Sunday School hymnology class will start in Second grade and the dismissal will be at noon into the hall. Mrs. Brewster has ordered new hymnology books and hopes to have
the children sing at the "Stop and Go Liturgy" in December. Please watch for Youth Sunday, which will take place on November 13th this year, for grades 7 through 12. On that day our Sunday School students will take over the adult responsibilities for the day, so that they may see the type of service that hopefully one day they also will offer to the church. The day commemorates the memory of the Three Youths and the children will put on a short presentation on the topic. Thank you to all the parents who indicated they are willing to volunteer with the Sunday School as a substitute or assistant. All new youth volunteers are required to take a one session child sex abuse class so that they may be able to work with children. The class will be given at the church at a later date. For further information on the Sunday School please contact the director, Tina Mihaltses at 516-6281872.
The Mayor and City Council of Glen Cove commended our St. Catherine's Philoptochos Chapter for their continued support of the City's outreach efforts. St. Catherine's Philoptochos is a major contributor to the new Rotary Rides program (initiated by the Oyster Bay Rotary Club) that provides free transportation to medical appointments for the disabled. The community mobilized Rotary Rides when Long Island Bus and the MTA discontinued their ABLE Ride service earlier this year.
Welcome and Introductions from Holy Resurrection Youth Commission By Nickie Demos, Co-Chairperson I would like to welcome all the children and parents to the new liturgical year. I hope you all have enrolled in Sunday School, Greek School, all the youth groups and boy scouts. If you have not had the chance, you may visit the church web site for a registration form. Let me introduce you all to our advisors. Some of these advisors have been giving of their time for our children for years and some are new to our Commission: • Sunday School: Mrs. Tina Mihaltses • GOYA: Anne Alexandrou, Helen Fakatselis, Vivian Paralikas • JOY: Patty Andreolas, Kelly Gatanas • HOPE: Millie Gianoukakis • Little Angels: Mimi Grabavenko • Boy Scouts: Dean Mihaltses, Tony Brigis • Greek School: Mrs. Elizabeth Horton Please enroll you child in his/her youth group and let them experience the pleasure of becoming in-
volved with the Church. I also would like to ask parents to help the group leaders who selflessly give of their time to commit to having the best programs for your child. I feel we all can call and ask these leader, "how can I assist", "do you need a chaperone", "should I bake something", " can I help coach"? One or two people cannot do all the work, they need your help. Most of our advisors work and have children, so please try to help them with the programs for our youth. The meeting dates for GOYA, JOY, HOPE, Little Angels, Boys Scouts can be found on our Church web site calendar. If you need any information e-mail: nickiedee@aol.com. The youth fundraiser ( the Glendi ) will be held this year on Saturday February 11. Please mark your calendar now. Last year we had about 200 people attending. I hope to equal that success this year. Of course, being so early this time you might have to bring your snow shoes and shovels. We might be having a snowball fight!!!!

Project Generation Prepares for Year Two Amid Exciting Developments “I greet you in the grace and peace of our Lord and Savior as I write to you today to inform you that I personally delivered during my last visit to the Holy Mother Church in Constantinople the benevolent contribution forwarded to me for the benefit of the Patriarchate from the praiseworthy Project Generation program implemented earlier in the year. Kindly know how impressed His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was in hearing of the scope and breast of this initiative. On his behalf, I commend you for your vision and thank you for your valued contribution.” So began a letter received in August by Father John and the Project Generation Organizing Committee from His Eminence Archbishop
Demetrios. As reported in our previous issues, Project Generation co-chairs Chris Gabriel and Valerie Sakellaridis had met with His Eminence in June to present him with two packages, one for him and another for His All Holiness. Both had contained conference proceedings along with Project Generation shirts and water bottles. In addition, the package for Patriarch Bartholomew had contained a birthday card and a check to benefit his planned new environmental center. The excitement for Project Generation continued into October. During the Archdiocesan Council meetings help on October 13th & 14th, the national Youth Committee recommended, in their report to the Council, that Project Generation be adopted as a
national project. One day later, at the Direct Archdiocesan District (DAD) Youth Conference hosted here at the Church of the Resurrection, we were invited to present Generation at the Boston Metropolis winter and summer camps. The next few months will be spent planning our second symposium while working with Deacon Evagoras Constantinides, the DAD Youth Director, to define and document a framework for brining Generation to the Metropolises. Please start spreading the word to all of the teens you know. As always, refer them to the Project Generation Facebook page and web site (http://www.projectgeneration.net) for additional information.

Archbishop Demetrios Blesses Our Iconography Our Holy Resurrection Parish was honored to welcome His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, September 18, 2011. Our Archbishop is a frequent visitor to our parish and always gives us praise for being a unique, dynamic parish that has made unprecedented accomplishments since 2005, when we opened the doors of our beautiful church. Archbishop Demetrios not only celebrated Liturgy with us, he also blessed our church’s iconography which includes the awe-inspiring Pantocrator that graces our dome as well as four scenes from the Bible that embrace the dome’s circumference: the Nativity; the Transfiguration; the Holy Resurrection; and Pentecost. The Pantocrator and the four scenes are the latest additions to our iconography project which are added to the first iconography of our new
church, the Baptism of Christ and St. Andrew the First Called which were installed at the baptismal font. That iconography was made possible by the memorial donations from our parish and the Glen Cove community. All the iconography of our church was expertly rendered by the renowned and divinely-gifted iconographer, George Filippakis. Assisted by Father John Vlahos on our parish’s behalf, Archbishop Demetrios expressed his deep appreciation to Mr. John Koufakis, Sr. and his family for donating the Pantocrator iconography in the dome, and to Chris and Stella Spyropoulos for donating the four scenes from the Bible. In addition the efforts and donations by Steve and Elle Anifitos; George and Ann Billias; Peter and Ellen Pavlakis; and Gus and Vasilianna Fakiris were acknowledged. To God Be the Glory!
