The UK high street is beginning to recover well. This is great news for the retail industry as a whole, and from my first hand experience at the sharp end, those working tirelessly in VM have definitely played their part in helping to restore British retail back to health. These awards are an opportunity for all of us in the VM industry to come together to celebrate success and recognise the shining lights that exist in the industry. There is no question that our industry is rich in talent. The challenge that lies ahead for retailers is to ensure that VM success is not just recognised with trophy cupboard examples of show stopping creativity or repetitive, process driven retail implementation. All too often, praise is heaped on a few concept stores and brand flagships, but real winners on the high street require aptitude for delivering pragmatic, rather than headline grabbing, success. The market is changing rapidly, but far from signalling the end of physical stores, online retailing and new shopping trends such as Click & Collect are actually providing customers with more reasons to visit stores. Some may mourn the fact that the functional aspect of shopping the high

street is now better delivered online, but in its place is a move towards a ‘retailtainment’ almost leisure experience that engages, excites and inspires. And with more UK retailers looking to exploit opportunities overseas in emerging markets such as China and the Middle East, this demand for delivering VM excellence consistently across borders will only increase. To achieve this, retailers have a responsibility to continue to invest in supporting effective VM delivery. Some say that VM will eventually be replaced by electronic space planning tools and shop displays, but I disagree. Now is the time to invest in providing the continuous training and development needed to give existing store teams the knowledge and skills required to realise both their own potential, and of the brands that they serve. This will ensure that retailers can continue to reinvigorate and reinvent their shopping experience, delighting customers and maintaining their distinctive edge. Do this, and we could be celebrating VM success on a more all-encompassing scale, when we meet again this time next year.
