SCENTING A GOOD THING
ANose in the perfume industry is an artist who can create scent experiences that take us through time back to our childhood, to change our mood through the creative blend of the perfect ingredients. Their unsung talents are akin to a Michelin star chef or a fine artist, as their craft is honed over time. Yet, the Nose is not confined to the perfume industry. The scent business encompasses the expected fragrance, personal care, and cosmetic market, but also the home goods, industrial design, air purification, ambient scents, and hospitality.
According to an industry analysis report by Grand View Research, “The global perfume market size was valued at USD 31.4 billion in 2018 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 3.9% from 2019 to 2025.” They cite personal grooming, coupled with increasing demand for luxury and exotic fragrances as the main reason for the growth. The scent business is a big deal with its nose in everything from your detergent to your cosmetics to how the gas smells as it is pumped into your car. If it doesn’t smell pleasing, it will not sell or customers will not return for more. Our own olfactory is a driver of our moods and memory. Smells that trigger a bad one (mood or memory) will override any logic to the contrary.
One of the most upsetting COVID-19 side effects for many people was the loss of taste and smell, sometimes for months, and with some long-haulers, the damage continues today.
The human sense of smell, although less keen than most of the animal kingdom, is the quickest signal that gets to our limbic system. This system in our brain is involved in our behavioral and emotional responses. These are the survival responses we need for feeding, reproduction, caring for our young, and fight-or-flight responses. For instance, when we meet someone for the first time, our olfactory can sense the pheromones that are created by emotions, telling us if that person is safe or dangerous. Without the sense of smell, we can feel unsettled and on high alert.

scented with a rotten egg smell to alert you to danger. Certain hotel chains have signature scents to create a more lasting memory, hopefully, it is a pleasing one as well. Westin was one of the first hotel chains to have a signature scent of white tea, vanilla, and cedar. Higherend hotels are hiring olfactory experts to develop scents based on their core customers and the overall experience they are offering. This scent is delivered through the HVAC system throughout the entire building subtlety at an almost imperceptible level. It’s almost subliminal, yet your nose knows.
In the insightful, spiritual industry, scent is a cornerstone. Aromatherapy, candles, oils, sprays, incense, soaps, lotions, as well as perfume, are some of a store’s best sellers and inspire additional income streams from workshops and store-branded items. Each store you walk into seems to have its own signature scent based on the combination of scented products offered there. At Coventry Creations, people ask us for our “factory scent” as a product. We have tried to capture this in a single product, but it never comes close to the 30 years of scent that has permeated all surfaces.
There is a low barrier to entry for blending your own scents, making this an effective way to improve store

branding and customer loyalty. It’s effective, but not necessarily easy. Having a large variety of scents and essential oil on hand to create the perfect blend, combined with the other packaging needs of bottles and labels can end up being a large investment over time. Not to mention keeping up with the inventory as it sells down. Yet, it is a point of pride when customers come back for more because your blend is their favorite.
Before you start bottling your own branded oils or take a deep dive into soap-making YouTube instructional videos, take a peek at the coming trends for the scent business and see if you can get in front of what the experts say your customers will be clambering to buy.
2023 Scent Trends
The scent trends for 2023 are looking to bring peace, balance, and ever-deepening permission to explore self-care in new ways.
The Pantone color of the year is digital lavender, pairing well with lavender being the scent of the year, Lavender as a color and a scent is calming, making that a theme for 2023. Lavender as a scent invokes calm, peaceful emotions. It is
also known as a loving fragrance that invites warm feelings, kindness, nurturing, and self-love.
This fits right in with the continuing trends of products and fragrances that are focused on personal growth, selfcare, spiritual development, and community.
For the 2022/2023 season, Bell Fragrance, a top German fragrance house, created a range of inspirational new fragrances that are focused on the emotional responses of scent. The “Feel-Good Mood” trend brings about happiness and smiles, “Do it Yourself” is designed to help you escape from the stress of everyday life, and “A Need for Nature” which connects the peaceful emotions that being in nature brings, bookends their trends of 2023 “It is all about positive thinking, finding ourselves and becoming one with nature.” Bell creates fragrances for personal care products as well as household care.
Meanwhile, enRoute (en-route.com-au) — an online style guide in Australia, is touting amber, vanilla, cinnamon, saffron, and other earthy fragrances as the 2023 summer fragrance trend.
These warmer scents are another group that can help ease frazzled nerves. Their examples are represented in the top luxury perfume brands from Ellis Brooklin’s Sun Fruit at $158 a bottle to Clive Christian’s Blonde Amber at $699 a bottle. That is a lot of luxurious self-care!
Alibaba, the mega importer, is showing that ingredientdriven fragrances are the focus for product development and importers. There is a laser focus on health with customers educating themselves on the safety and wellness features of the ingredients. They are also showing that their customers are choosing environmental sustainability over price. There is a growing demand for eco-friendly and natural perfumes and scented products.
Next-Gen of the Scent Business
NATURAL SCENTS (NOT JUST RECREATIONS)
Even in the world of essential oils, the next evolution in the scent business is natural scents — the actual plants, wood, resin, and the gentle odor they release. That is not always practical or achievable, but watch for this trend and the creative ways it can be achieved.
PERSONAL SCENTS, IN A MINIMALISTIC WAY
Millennials and Gen Z, are looking to personalize their experience. They support individuality and will buy natural single scents to create their own personal signature
fragrance. Independent and franchise retailers are popping up around the country to help customers create their own signature scents.
NATURAL ODOR REMOVERS
For the environment, body, spills, and pet accidents, natural odor removers are a fast-growing market segment. Have you watched the Lume Deodorant commercials? That is taking social media by storm! The old Farmer’s Almanac has plenty of DIY natural odor control remedies and there are tons of companies using that information to create products for us folks that don’t have time to make our own.
SCENTS AND FOOD
Teas as a multi-sense experience is nothing new, but they have a new marketing message with scent before taste in the experience. Tea Aroma from ScentsofTea. com starts the journey into tea as a multi-sensory experience. Since the sense of smell and taste are connected, this is a natural evolution.
Restaurants have known for years to never use scented candles in their dining rooms, but now some fine dining experiences are including an additional focus on the sense of smell in your food experience, above and beyond what you naturally get. Wood cutlery that
has its own aroma, for instance, spoons scented with raspberry or bergamot to enhance a plain vanilla ice cream. Another experience is bowls of food placed atop a larger dish of hyacinths. The waiter pours hot water over the flowers at the tableside, releasing their scent immediately prior to customers’ consumption of the dish. Best yet is plates made from burnt oak leaves or charred chestnut wood, where the plate itself is the source of the aromatic experience.
SCENTS AND COCKTAILS
Kevin Peterson and Jane Larson combined their background in perfume, design, and culinary arts to create their unique cocktails at their Detroit-based bar Castalia. Using their own brand of natural perfumes, Sfumato Fragrances tapped into a scent’s ability to enhance the flavor of a drink. This unique experience blends the similarities between both the ingredients and impressions created by cocktails and perfumes.
This amazing experience can also be found at Bar du Fouquet’s, Cannes at Le Majestic Hotel in France. Emanuele Balestra, the bar manager deconstructs every aspect of each cocktail to push the boundaries of the sensory drinking experience, adding additional natural fragrances to the bitters, cordials, and tinctures used in the cocktails.
Trend predictions are fun to research and it’s exciting to watch what actually unfolds.
From what is trending to what is evolving, the most impressive development in the scent business are the sniff technologies. These may not create the next perfume trend, but there are artificial noses being developed to detect cancer, viruses such as COVID-19, potential food allergies in prepared food, and explosives.
Trend predictions are fun to research and it’s exciting to watch what actually unfolds. Let’s see how the business of scent evolves! On a final (olfactory) note — they have been threatening smell-o-vision since the ‘60s but it looks like someone is actually figuring out a way to make it a reality!

12 SELF-CARE PRACTICES TO TRY THIS YEAR
Self-care is not a buzz phrase. It’s not something to add to your already overflowing plate. It is something we can and should try to incorporate into our lives. While it might seem indulgent to some, research shows that nurturing our body and mind can help our overall health and well-being and allow us to show up better in our personal and professional lives.
There is no shortage of advice on what you should do, but in order for something to stick, like any habit, it helps to reframe how you apply self-care
About the Author: Megy Karydes is a Chicago-based writer. Her new book, 50 Ways to More Calm, Less Stress: Scientifically Proven Ways to Relieve Anxiety and Boost Your Mental Health Using Your Five Senses, will be available this fall. in your daily life. Otherwise, none of these self-care practices will work and, instead, might feel burdensome.
As I researched and wrote my book, 50 Ways to More Calm, Less Stress: Scientifically Proven Ways to Relieve Anxiety and Boost Your Mental Health Using Your Five Senses, I discovered there is no single self-care practice that will work for everyone but there is something for everyone. To figure out what might work best for you, consider what calms you when you get anxious or stressed and look for patterns.
If you’re willing to try new things this year, here are 12 scientifically proven self-care practices for each month of the year. See what works and begin creating a self-care toolkit. Don’t discount anything. For example, I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed a warm bath at the end of a stressful day so now I keep a basket of fragrant bath
bombs at the ready. This has become part of my toolkit.
TURN ON THE LIGHT. If you suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), try turning on a light therapy lamp when you wake up. Pair it with another activity like brushing your teeth or pouring your first cup of coffee so the habit sticks.
TURN OFF THE DAY WITH A WARM BATH. Having something to look forward to in the evenings and before you go to bed can be therapeutic.
INVEST IN LUXURIOUS LOTIONS OR ESSENTIAL OILS. Our sense of smell is powerful and often not considered as a form of self-care. Having a bottle of lotion or essential oils with a fragrance that calms you at your desk can be just what you need to remind you to take a deep breath.
LIGHT CANDLES. If you’re not sensitive to the scent of candles, this is
another way to engage your olfactory system. Fragrant candles throughout your home or work space can fill up your environment with calming scents.
TAKE IN SOME TEA-TIME. It’s been shown that L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea, helps balance mood, or make people feel calmer. For some, even holding that warm cup or smelling their tea has a calming effect.
WRITE IN A JOURNAL. Jotting down your thoughts, what’s bothering you or why you’re grateful, can be a wonderful way to clear your head.
PAINT BY NUMBERS. Another way to clear your headspace is to allow your mind and body to relax. Activities like paint by numbers or doing a puzzle (#8) are great ways to stop ruminating about a stressful issue at hand. Often, clearing your head of the issue allows space for your brain to work out a solution or see alternatives
“Often, clearing your head of the issue allows space for your brain to work out a solution or see alternatives where it’s hard to see when you’re in the thick of something.”
where it’s hard to see when you’re in the thick of something.
DO A PUZZLE. If painting doesn’t appeal to you or you don’t want to invest in a painting kit, a puzzle is a low-cost and easy option.
TAKE A WALK. It’s not only good for our bodies to move, taking a walk outside allows us to breathe in and take a much-needed break. Even a quick 5-minute walk around the block can do wonders.
ENJOY SOME NATURE THERAPY.
There is no mistaking that Vitamin N (N as in Nature) always does the body and mind some good.
BAKE BREAD. Kneading some dough, putting it in the oven and smelling freshly baked bread after a stressful day is sometimes all we need.
LISTEN TO WHITE NOISE. Many people use a white noise machine
as a way to help them go to bed. It’s also available for us throughout the day. When things seem too noisy in our spaces, either in our environment or in our own heads, turn on that white noise and focus on that instead.
Self-care means taking the time and doing things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. It also looks different for everyone. Self-care doesn’t need to be a monumental effort, cost a lot of money or take a lot of time. Finding ways to incorporate self-care into your daily life that makes sense for you will reward you in greater clarity, peace of mind and even greater success in your personal and professional life.
Content is (STILL) King
Let’s face it, the past several years have been challenging for retail owners and managers of bookstores, mind-bodyspirit boutiques, gift stores, and most retail businesses. Many took a business hit during COVID from which they are still recovering, and others did not recover at all. Problems of staffing and inventory shortages continue into the present, and the economy could best be described as sluggish.
About the Author: Karen Stuth is the founder and owner of Satiama Publishing, Satiama Writers Resource, and Magical Planet Publishing, the co-creator of Quintangled: A Game of Strategy, Chance, and Destiny, author of A Speckled Stone – Thirty-one Poems for Seekers, past president of the Coalition of Visionary Resources, and the proud companion of three feline taskmasters. To know more, visit www.satiamapublishing.com
Many are looking for new or improved ways to manage and promote their brands, business, and product lines while dealing with smaller marketing and advertising budgets. Inventory costs are rising due to a surge in manufacturing costs and shipping, and many retailers fear trying new products, often turning back to ‘tried-and-true’ favorites. Others are giving up their leases to move to smaller, more affordable spaces. Especially in the mind-body-spirit industry, the customer base that was emerging as a part of the mainstreaming of our industry has shrunk slightly as people are becoming more conservative in their spending.
So what can retailers do to stimulate sales, especially when confronted with smaller marketing budgets? The good news is that you can turn back to a tried-and-true maxim: Content is (still) king!

What is content anyway?
Marketing content generally consists of blogs, newsletter articles, podcasts, video blogs (vlogs), classes, virtual events, social media efforts, and more. But the real question is what should your focus or messaging be? Content marketing means excellent, relevant, and well-researched subject matter that offers your brand and business the credibility that flows from your knowledge of your market and customer base and what their touchpoints are as they relate to your offerings. Your customers’ experience with your content is part of your brand promise, coupled with the experience they expect to have.
And the good news is that you do not have to create all your content yourself.
Let’s take the topic of meditation. Ask authors of some of the books you sell to give you blogs, record a vlog, come in to read an excerpt of their book as part of a signing, or offer a free class of seminar (either in person or virtually) about meditation. But you can also reach out to your distributors or publishing houses for the same thing.
some time each week to
Consider asking one of your local authors or one of your store readers or a local celebrity to offer a virtual guided meditation and advertise it to your own lists and post it as a free offering on your website. As a part of that, be sure to include your 10 bestselling meditation tools, whether journals, CDs, books, zafus, singing bowls, incense, or meditation timers.
How Can I Use Content to
Stimulate Sales?
Prior to any major holiday, publish a blog on your website about your 20 top recommended gifts from your inventory – a gift list branded to your business name — and be sure to also send it out to your customer list in the form of a newsletter. Newsletters are inexpensive or even free and can be a formidable marketing tool if you have engaging content. Shoppers love lists and enjoy being referred to gift suggestions rather than trying to generate their own gift ideas.
Don’t forget to consistently message your content through your social media channels, on your website, blog, and through customer newsletters. Content can also include experiences, such as “Hot Chocolate Days” during winter months. One retailer set up a kiddie pool on the porch of their store filled with sand for kids to play in as part of promoting their list of marvelous children’s books for summer reading. Offer a costume contest for Halloween, and a balloon arch for Valentine’s selfies. Experiential content is often the most memorable of all.
Remember to utilize non-verbal content – high-quality images that include your logo, product photos, maps to your store, even your own photo as a content author. If you need general images, don’t forget the plethora of websites that offer millions of royalty free images. If you use your own photos, be sure that you obtain
permission from the individuals in your photos or from the photographer if you didn’t take the photo yourself.
What about Social Media?
Your social media content can consist of short Facebook live or prerecorded videos of three minutes
or less where you feature a few ‘products of the week,’ or present new products, titles, or new product lines. Don’t forget to include customer testimonials in your written social media content, and always post with a picture, which really is worth a thousand words! Your enthusiasm about your offerings is contagious and will help your customers to position your store as top-of-mind when shopping for gifts, holidays, or no reason at all.
How Can My Customers Inform My Content?
When possible, ask your customers what three words they would use to describe your business and use those terms often in your content in all locations. Those positive words or ideas should become foundational in all your content as they are how your customers experience your business, which can be even more powerful than the terms you might want to push forward. For example, if your customers describe your inventory as ‘comprehensive,’ then use that term to describe your brand or store, adding the size and depth of your offering and even providing photos of the same. If they describe your staff as ‘friendly’ or ‘helpful,’ message that as a knowledgeable team that can help each customer make informed choices. Feeding
back to customers the ideas that cause them to patronize your store in the first place only increases their loyalty and commitment.
How Can I Keep Track of My Content?
When focusing on content, you might consider keeping a calendar of your themes and messages and select a main topic or idea for each month — gratitude for November, celebration for December, new beginnings for January, etc. Finally, don’t overlook the importance of keywords as a component of search engine optimizing, which makes your business easier to find in an online search. Key words are the words that consumers might use to Google for something, such as “books about reiki,” or “Native
American drums” or any word or phrase that leads them to the content they are searching for. Your website, your blogs, your ads, your newsletters, and your social media should make effective use of these important keywords to find you— otherwise, they’ll land on one of the many other pages in the Google results. There are also many keyword or focus phrase ‘engines’ that can help you find the best terms to use for your business content easily found through a simple Google search, or consider using Google’s Key Word Planner Tool.
While content is still the best and most cost-efficient way to market your business, many business owners don’t take the time to use this mostly free approach to ensuring their business always feels fresh, relevant, and constantly brings in new customers. Schedule some time each week to produce some content. The results are very likely to surprise you!
NY NOW
Introduces PLAY USA to its Winter Market with Emerald X Senior Sales Manager
Stephanie Gaspari
Retailing Insight Magazine: How does NY NOW support a community of small businesses through its annual tradeshows?
Stephanie Gaspari: For nearly 100 years, NY NOW, formerly known as the New York International Gift Fair, has been the leading market for wholesale products and innovative designs in North America.
Held in February and August, we provide a platform for brands and retailers, both large and small, to connect and conduct business. Whether it is a new brand, or one which is well established, NY NOW gives businesses an opportunity to get their products in front of thousands of retailers looking to discover and experience what is new, trending, and innovative.
RIM: Can you share more about how NY NOW’s recent acquisition of Bulletin will further support the industry for small businesses?
SG: The combination of Bulletin and NY NOW provides a dynamic platform that delivers year-round discovery and engagement for businesses of all sizes. It brings the element of a tradeshow to anywhere you may be and makes it easier than ever to discover exceptional products, connect with brands, and manage your wholesale business online. Bulletin is disruptive because it is one of the easiest and most affordable options for brands looking to expand their distribution and sell into retailers, like boutiques, grocery stores, apothecaries, etc. Tradeshows can be expensive for certain brands, especially smaller ones, as are showrooms or working with wholesale reps. With Bulletin, brands can activate their wholesale business in a day or two and start selling to thousands of retailers all over the US and Canada. We take a commission on every order and there’s no upfront fee to join, so the offering is more accessible for small business owners.
RIM: How do you expect NY NOW’s acquisition of Bulletin will add to the unique experience NY NOW trade shows offer?
SG: Right now, we’re hatching a pretty disruptive strategy for how to revive and revamp what a tradeshow is, how it feels, and how it functions, all while integrating Bulletin’s marketplace and digital wholesale tools to make the tradeshow experience for brands and buyers more tech-enabled and super seamless. We are rethinking attendee registration all the way through placing orders, as well as ways to help exhibitors track ROI on their show participation. So beyond enabling 365 wholesale browsing and shopping for NY NOW’s network of hundreds of thousands of buyers, we’re excited to use Bulletin to help streamline all aspects of the show for both buyers and brands.
RIM: Why was now the right time to bring PLAY USA to the NY NOW Winter Market?
SG: Currently the toy industry does not have an event in the first quarter, and we saw the opportunity to serve this community. Retailers are looking to refresh their stores with new products post-holiday, and brands are eager to showcase their lines. Toys and games have always been a successful category at NY NOW and we look forward to growing this area of the show.
RIM: What does the addition of PLAY USA mean for the overall expansion of NY NOW?
SG: NY NOW was the first tradeshow to stage at the Javits post-COVID in August of 2021. Since then, we have seen a significant increase in participation, and PLAY USA will add several new brands for retailers to source from. Our attendees are always looking for new and exciting products they haven’t seen at other shows.
RIM: How will the integration of PLAY USA impact the show?
SG: We are always working on ways to keep our attendees engaged, and it all starts with having a robust variety of brands and products to source from. Launching PLAY USA brings exactly that – more products for buyers to discover!
RIM: What can attendees and exhibitors expect from the addition of PLAY USA?
SG: PLAY USA brings a new, exciting element to NY NOW. Attendees can expect to see some amazing, creative brands including Ty Inc., Manhattan Toy, Fat Brain Toys, Tonies, The Toy Network, Thames and Kosmos and many more! Brands will have access to thousands of retailers represented from all 50 states, as well as internationally.
RIM: What has been the response thus far from potential exhibitors?
SG: We have had an overwhelmingly positive response regarding the launch from retailers, brands, and press. It has been three years since the toy industry has had a live event platform to do business, and the anticipation and excitement is growing as we inch closer to February. PLAY USA currently has more than 60 brands participating this February and we expect this number to continue to increase over the next couple of months.
“Brands will have access to thousands of retailers represented from all 50 states, as well as internationally.”
RIM: Besides PLAY USA, will there be any other new activations at the 2023 Winter Market?
SG: NY NOW will be presenting a pavilion of 50+ Bulletin brands spanning all categories at the Winter market. These are all brands that sell on Bulletin’s wholesale marketplace, and many will be using Bulletin to power their presence and wholesale catalogue at the show. The goal is to reinvigorate the assortment at NY NOW and create an activation and community of brands that is compelling to a younger and more digitally native buyer. In addition, this pavilion will serve as a test for integrating more of Bulletin’s wholesale marketplace and order management technology with NY NOW’s in-person market.
INTERVIEW
AUTHOR Emily FrancisA.
TALKS ABOUT LIFE AND NEW BOOK THE TASTE OF JOY: MEDITERRANEAN WISDOM FOR A LIFE WORTH SAVORING
After moving to the Mediterranean with her family during the 2020 pandemic, Emily A. Francis learned insider secrets to one of the healthiest lifestyles in the world. Now, she shares this insight so you, too, can improve your wellness and invigorate your soul.
Retailing Insight Magazine: What would be a taste of joy for you before and then after rediscovering a healthier way of life?
Emily A. Francis: Joy to me comes in little bites all throughout our experiences in daily life. It is a heightened sense of the world around you at that exact moment in time. It can be felt in the entire physiology of the body when joy is experienced. Some bites of joy are easy to see, smell and taste while others might take a little bit more focus to find. Finding peace and contentment in my life was cultivated by a strong gratitude practice. Finding blissful and heartfelt

“It was day after day of living on autopilot. Life felt fragmented and frenzied.”
joy, however, was found through an awakening in my whole body and soul once I made this move over to Malta.
My life in America was pretty quiet and we lived in a place where we didn’t socialize too often outside of events that catered to our children. My greatest highlight of the last year we spent in the states came on New Year’s Eve going into 2020. We stayed home and made fondue as a family. We have a blended family and this night was spent with all the kids together under one roof. To me, it was the perfect way to end one chapter and begin another. We snuggled up and watched movies and fell asleep before midnight. At that time,
it was a perfect way to welcome a year ahead that we had no idea would shake the whole world into a whole new reality.
The following New Years’ Eve going into 2021 in Malta, we had a house full of people gathering with us for hours into the night. We had a feast that we shared together that spanned several courses and many hours at the dining table. Even in the midst of utter worldwide chaos, we still gathered with those that we kept in our bubbles from school and work.
When we climbed up to the rooftop to watch the fireworks near midnight, other buildings with their own bubbles of people all yelled to each other across the way “Happy New Year!” as we clanked our wine glasses and said the Maltese word for cheers, saħħa (sounds like “sa ha”) which means good health!
RIM: What was your life like before you moved to the Mediterranean?
EAF: I left behind a life in Georgia on the outskirts of Atlanta. Traffic jams for hours at a time. My husband’s commute was over an hour each way so we barely saw him. The girls didn’t get to see him in the mornings and he would get home in time to eat dinner and put the kids to bed. It was day after day of living on autopilot. Life felt fragmented and frenzied.
I did the best I could with what I had, but I was not happy and I knew it. I could feel myself shrinking. I wanted something slower-paced, more family time, more acceptance and tolerance and inclusivity in the world around me. I wanted to feel free in my soul to be exactly who I was and I wanted that same list of things for the rest of my family. By 2020, I was hearing this call well beyond a whisper. I have a particular memory etched into my mind of a day I took my kids to the local shopping store and ahead of us to get a cart was a man holding his
young daughter’s hand and I could see a gun handle coming right out of his pants and all I could think was “this is not the life I want for my children.”
on that. It’s vulnerable and also empowering. It’s leaning on friends and neighbors and accepting help, love and friendship from the most passionate and lovingly animated characters.
Not only do I get more family time than ever before on a daily basis, but I also play with the farmers and visit the fishing village often.
RIM: What is life like in Malta for you?
EAF: Imagine jumping into the most entertaining, beautiful and loving place of your life. That is what life is like for me here. People here come from all over the world and I am learning so much about what life is really all about. It’s so much more than what I was used to. There are no big box shops here. There isn’t even Amazon here! I had to learn my way around a whole new life and it turns out, I fell deeply and madly in love with all of it. Even the hard parts. It’s important to me to be the foreigner here and take the good with the bad
If ever we get sick, it’s our Greek friends that are quick to tell us exactly what we should eat for every ailment (those recipes are in the book). It’s sending my children to a school where they are learning more than one other language daily and where they are taught more about the arts, passions, and food. They are reminded every day to enjoy their life and follow their passions and dreams. They focus on building the whole person. They are interested in the children’s emotional health as well as their physical wellbeing and they keep staff on hand for both. The whole life education they are receiving here is nothing like we ever could have found anywhere else.
I am not the only one who is blooming into an entirely new version of myself. We all are.
Malta is a very small island and it allows us much more family time. In our home now we all wake up together as a family in the mornings. We have family breakfast together at the table and family dinner the same way. After breakfast, I drive the kids and my husband to work every day. Driving here is pretty terrifying and it’s on the left side of the road. I took driving lessons for months, and therefore I am the only driver in the house. My husband could do it but we share a car now and it just keeps things easier this way. Together he and I drop off the kids at school and then I take him to the office. From there, it’s my time to interview people for the magazine or be at home and write. Or usually, at least once a week I meet out for coffee with various friends and neighbors. It is the most social I have been since I was a teenager!
Not only do I get more family time than ever before on a daily basis, but I also play with the farmers and visit the fishing village often. I have friends that I have made all over this island and I love them all to bits. People here are generally happier people who live more simply.
I teamed up with the local tourism magazine where I interview on camera local farmers, fisherman and chefs about the way that foods are grown, harvested and prepared here on the island. When I say I wanted to live in a GMO-free country, I mean that most sincerely and now that I am in a country where most of the foods are grown locally or imported from other GMO-free countries nearby such as Italy, Greece and Spain, I want to know everything about why and how the food growing is so different.
RIM: What gave you the idea to write this book?
EAF: Meeting these farmers especially, I am getting to spend time with the ones that most people will never find
anywhere in the world. These farmers that I have found are generational farmers learning from their fathers and mothers and grandfathers and grandmothers still living in the same homes that they were born in and have raised a family of their own in. The wisdom of these people is a treasure that I would not want to see get missed not only by the locals to Malta, but to the world. The farming community here is what I consider to make up the backbone of this entire country and the heart of this country beats straight out of the fishing village. It’s like a living being of energy and history that I try to find here and share in my columns and through my books. The overall sense of peace and well-being within these particular people is beyond words but I do my best to articulate what I’ve experienced with them.
The food growers are a very tight community and they live on the far end of the north and south sides of the island. They are hard to fi nd and even harder to get to open up their homes and lives to anyone with a

camera. It has taken tremendous work on my part to make my way into the fold and I don’t want to miss any chance to share them with you.
I don’t just go and do an interview. I come back once the print magazine comes out and I bring my family to come and meet them and take copies of the magazines to them for their families to see. I follow up with visits quite frequently and try to learn anything they are willing to share with me. They love having someone so eager to hear those old stories and I consider it a tremendous honor to get to hear them.
RIM: Can you share some of the Mediterranean Wisdom described in your book?
EAF: In Malta, Faith, family and food are definitely the three tenets. The culture of the Mediterranean is completely different from anything I’ve witnessed before. There are a few high points that I think make this lifestyle healthier in body, mind and soul. Above all, they live a community-based way of life. The concept of Love thy neighbor exists as an action on this island. Once you are friends, you are family is real here. The way that people here bend over forward and backward to help each other is beautiful. They are not
so much concerned with how much money you make or what you do for a living as much as the key to all acceptance here, are you good people? If that answer is yes, then the rest will sort itself out around here.
Meals are shared and they are experienced as an intentional practice of pleasure rather than just to eat and go. They sit down and take their time and do everything here, as they say here often “slowly, slowly.” Animals are treated well and stray cats are fed by everyone. The children are taught from birth to be kind to animals and it’s incredible to see. The whole attitude in general toward any living thing is very focused and kind.
Children are treasured here. Everyone hugs and kisses the children. The children are greeted every morning at school with “Good morning, Pupa!” Pupa means doll in Maltese. They use many pet names for the children and they hug the children and kiss the tops of their heads. It’s a loving culture and embracing is one of their golden keys to all of life. Things move slower here and I think it’s partly to due to the fact that whatever they are doing at any given time, they are fully present in the task. If it’s a meal, a coffee, work etc. whatever it is, they are all in. They live life in the present
tense rather than always rushing to check off what’s next on the list. Everything is intentional here and I have learned to slow down and move with a steadier purpose in my life here.
RIM: What are some of the foods you’ve learned about from the farmers?
EAF: I have been able to dig potatoes from the ground. I have picked debris from the olives just before they’re being pressed into oil. I sat with the fisherman on the traditional fishing boat as they pull up with the seasonal treasure of Lampuki (baby Mahi Mahi). I have helped with artichokes both Jerusalem and globes. I have helped shovel salt from the salt pans on the sister island of Gozo. I have watched the beekeeper pour their honey and the local Gozitan cheese maker milk his sheep and goats for the most traditional and famous cheese on the island: the Ġbejna.
Basically, if I come up with an idea and I find a farmer who will allow us in, we go and do the interviews. I have even gone into the prison bakery to watch how they make their bread. Bread is a big deal to Malta and its signature sandwich, the Ftira or hobz biz zejt (bread with oil) is the first food to be accepted into Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’s List. Stating that “the ftira fosters a shared identity in Malta, bringing people together in homes and workplaces.” The things I have been able to do here in Malta are second to none and I am truly living the life of my wildest dreams. Going into year three now of being here, like a fine wine, it’s only getting better with age.
RIM: What are some of the selfcare tips that you have picked up from your new life in the Mediterranean that differs from self-care in America?
EAF: The self-care tips are very different here. They don’t compile a million things to do in one day. They take it easy and do what they can day to day. They don’t want to over-commit themselves. They live more simply. They work hard when they need to and
they play hard when it’s time to. They don’t feel guilty when they are having fun. Pleasure is a priority. If they need to take some time out and change it up, they do so and they don’t beat themselves up for it. They ask for help.
It’s a community-based way of life here. So, in a lot of respects, self-care isn’t a buzzword the way we know it to be. It’s a way of life. This is also a country with third generational family being here. People raising children have a lot more help than what we see back home. What I would say is the biggest thing that I have noticed is that people here don’t let it get to the point where they have to climb back up or take that break or whatever it is we need to do to maintain our sanity.
RIM: Can you share some changes you’ve made incorporating the Mediterranean Diet?
EAF: We don’t use sour cream anymore, only Greek yogurt. Also, the quality of Greek Yogurt is very important. We use far less butter and much more olive oil. Eating foods that have been grown nearby until they are ripe makes a big difference in the taste and benefit. Nothing is added to them to flavor enhance, either. It’s simplicity in life, in love and with food.
As for the big factor of a Mediterranean diet, it’s olive oil that plays the main character. It has to be of the fi nest quality, extra virgin cold-pressed oil. It can be a bottle with blended olive varieties, but we know what olives were used and fi llers or anything impure is not added. We buy our oil from local farmers and we know exactly what’s in the bottle. Most try to buy what is called a mono-variety olive oil, which means only one specific type of olive.
There is an olive native to Malta, the Bidni olive, that is so high in antioxidants and polyphenols and so low in acids that they are studying it to fight against cancer and other chronic illnesses. It is power-packed and very dark green in color. Color matters when it comes to olive oil. The greener the color, the healthier it is.
Lastly, learning to make dressings for salad is something we’ve had to learn since jarred salad dressings are not sold here. On tables in restaurants, you have little packets of olive oil for your salad. No more salad in a bag with the dressing packet that you cut and pour. It all needs to be made fresh at the time you plan to eat it.
Here is another little interesting fact. In Europe, preservatives are not used in bread or other foods and so nothing is good for more than a couple of days. Bread only lasts two days so we must buy fresh. What was really difficult to get used to was buying fewer amounts of food and visiting the grocery store several times a week instead.
RIM: What have you learned in meeting with local farmers, fishermen, and chefs on the island?
EAF: In life, in love and with food: living simply, locally, seasonally and mindfully is the key. Keep everything simple. Always live from your heart and do the best you can without guilt. And above all, be thankful always.
RIM: Can you give an example of an easy recipe for the readers?
EAF: Dijon, Citrus Vinaigrette Dressing. I love this over spinach or arugula. I add herbed feta and dried cranberries and top with this dressing (found in the book):
DIJON-CITRUS VINAIGRETTE DRESSING
INGREDIENTS:
1 organic orange lemon or tangerine (or mix and match)
2-3 tsp Dijon Mustard
¼ c Vinegar (apple cider or your preferred choice)
¾ c EVOO Olive Oil
Pinch salt and pepper
Zest of all the peel of one piece of fruit, plus the juice of one or more (if you are using more than one variety of fruit) ¼ cup (60 ml) apple cider vinegar (or whatever vinegar you wish)
Pinch of sea salt Pinch of pepper
Optional Additions: Tahini (I love to add about a teaspoon of tahini or more as needed to thicken the dressing.) 1 clove fresh garlic, minced
Fresh herbs (which are used often here) such as the trifecta of Maltese seasonings: rosemary, basil and thyme.
NO. 1 EXPLORE, EXPERIENCE, LIBERATE
Imagine a life in which we explore without boundaries and experience without judgment. Imagine the freedom we would find if we no longer labeled our choices as right or wrong.
As a collective, we are awakening from thousands of years of mental bondage to a freedom of spirit that encompasses acceptance of all possibilities and potential. This is undoubtedly a messy, chaotic process unfortunately, and at times violent and harmful. I am not naive enough to suggest we need no boundaries when living within large societal groups. Yet, primarily at the root intent of structure and law is to do no harm. So, within the context
of unlimited exploration of experiences for ourselves, there is this one requirement — no damage.
Our Earth journey is fascinating because we are a self-contained solitary Soul, yet simultaneously interdependent, within the larger human tribe. In the greater scheme of eternity, we are the infinite living within the finite. The experience of this Earth journey is exploring a state of unconditional interdependence.
We have no actual ability to place conditions on our fellows, though we may think we do. They, too, must stand self-contained and alone at their exit from this human life. In a seeming
paradox, once we individually shift our spiritual discipline to live only in the paths of our soul consciousness, we automatically catalyze a type of tribal interdependence.
Discipline is much more than training ourselves to avoid the consequence of breaking the rules.
While preparing to adhere to external rules to live with integrity within our tribal groups, we develop the discipline of spirit for ourselves. When our soul consciousness leaves our body to return to wherever it originated, it returns alone and answers alone. It speaks only for its creations.
I would suggest that spiritual discipline is about shifting our inner compass to the center of our soul consciousness — our heart-soul connection. Our mind is a tool; our will is
our action center; our heart is our motivator and the motor that runs everything else.
To know our Self means to know that we are Soul, spirit, and energy fitted into matter. We do not need to find our Self, for we are already here. There is nothing mystical about being a spiritually conscious human. The skills needing to be refined are the senses we have held dormant for thousands of years. They lie beyond the five macro senses of taste, smell, hearing, touch, and sight in the intricate micro nuances of our inner planes of consciousness.
When we search in the depths of our hearts, we discover deeper and deeper layers of seeing, hearing, feeling, and telepathic communication until our inner planes spring fully multi-dimensionally alive. We use our inner senses to perceive the multi-dimensional layers of our external world. Events viewed by our external perception as right or wrong, black or white, may show on the inner plane as having three, four, five, or more layers of less tangible meaning. What appears solid physically shows itself to have tightly interwoven
layers of light and frequency. We learn how to wield each of these microelements within our inner planes of consciousness for our own expansion.
Like a spider in its web, we weave the circumstances and the situations in which we find ourselves. Once we perceive how we weave, we attain true liberation of ourselves from dependence on the collectives around us – because we alone control our weaving.
“Each day is about faith and trust.”
Each day is about faith and trust. Not blind faith or intellectual conviction. Faith and trust are based on experiencing the sensation of our connection with Source love-light. This experience tells us we have unlimited choice and power beyond this world’s perception.
To be free means being spiritually awake and open to exploring: to explore all imaginings without boxes, labels, and inflexible dogmas; to be whole means the Soul and human are in harmony. There are many examples of those who receive all the material wealth they can imagine and still cannot find serenity. Others diligently explore every nuance of scientific, psychological, and
philosophical thought and still cannot fi nd peace. Still, others continue to wonder what is happening to them.
When we work through psychic muck, explore a past life, and puzzle out a soul fragment or life path meaning, we put a piece of our human self to rest peacefully within our Soul. We simultaneously free our Soul to explore anew.
We are like an eternal kaleidoscope. We see the whole, and then we focus on a color, then on the combinations of colors, until fi nally, we focus on the whole once again, having found a greater expansion of our Self.
Liberation is the slaying of ignorance. The transcending of willful blindness. No lies, no dominance, no enslavement. There is no danger in changing or fl ipping our perspective — no monsters under the bed. Human life has fi nite layers of richness. Soul Light adds layers imbued with infi nite wisdom and knowledge. Light brings us out of fear and opens us to wisdom, grace, freedom, and joy.
Liberation is the power within — knowing that we alone can save ourselves from our Self. No one else can save us. We save ourselves by activating our Light, the power that comes directly from our Source
through the conduit of our Soul. We perpetuate the energy of separation when we think of the Source Light as outside of us, something we must search for in the world to bring back within. By understanding that we are more than human beings, we are Soul-human beings. We do not reject the external world and all its accomplishments; instead, we see the reality of the space it occupies.
‘To thine own Self be true’ means to take action from the heart, make an independent choice, and choose unlimited perception, for when expansion is over, so is the magic of life. It is our calling to fully express what we are through the Light of the consciousness frequency that we call the Soul. As we illuminate all threads of our Soul, our human self is transfigured. Liberation is the result. Freedom comes from choice.
Ultimately, where even one of us shakes off the veils of illusion, hundreds and thousands will follow. As we connect to our unlimited power source, peace fi lls us as an invisible, quiet stream that flows through us as a golden river of wonder, respect, benevolence, purity, impeccability, integrity, and honesty, always and forever. The peace within liberation and freedom sustains us and all living things on this planet.

A CURATED SELECTION OF TITLES IN BODY-MIND-SPIRIT
By the editorDOPAMINE NATION: FINDING BALANCE IN THE AGE OF INDULGENCE
By Anna LembkePublished by Penguin Publishing Group
ISBN: 9781524746742
Pages: 304 $23.49 hardcover
This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, highdopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting . . . The increased numbers, variety, and potency is staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. As such we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption.
In Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke, psychiatrist and author, explores the exciting new scientific discoveries that explain why the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain… and what to do about it. Condensing complex neuroscience into easyto-understand metaphors, Lembke illustrates how fi nding contentment and connectedness means keeping dopamine in check. The lived experiences of her patients are the gripping fabric of her narrative. Their riveting stories of suffering and redemption give us all hope for managing our consumption and transforming our lives. In essence, Dopamine Nation shows that the secret to fi nding balance is combining the science of desire with the wisdom of recovery.

The Sugar Jar frees you from the excess stress and exhaustion that wears you down. It allows you to unleash your authentic self, choose joy, and find lasting balance. FIVE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SELF-CARE
Aromatherapy, the use of essential oils, is a tool to help you create balance, happiness, and health on all levels — mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. When I was a child, the aromas of our kitchen and garden were my earliest connection with aromatherapy and using fragrances from the garden for health and well-being. Can you think of aromas that bring you comfort and joy?
Here are five essential oils to use with the intention of selfcare. I recommend using the inhalation method (instead of application to your skin) and try not to use the same essential oil for prolonged periods of time for your safety. Be sure to check if an essential oil has any contraindications as they have real chemical components.
