From the Editor
A new journey has begun…
The new year is here, despite the odds and the rollercoaster of emotional and financial challenges that our industry and many of us personally faced in 2020. I strongly believe that last year was a year for preparation and spiritual awakening in so many ways. Against the current, the reality, the challenges, and the hard times, we have survived. What we’ve learned has made us stronger and has given us the tools we need to pursue a more successful path forward. The truth that lays on the other side is nothing but optimism and confidence that no matter the circumstances we had to put ourselves through in the past year, we are going in the right direction – we’re moving forward. Redirect your energy, listen to your intuition more often, accept the challenges, don’t be afraid of changes, learn about new things, and share your experience, find new connections, let go of what is no longer working and make peace with it. In the end, everything you do reflects YOU – including your business.
I believe our latest edition of Retailing Insight offers topics and ideas that will help you redirect your energy and to reflect on the continued changes in retail and how real stories and different beliefs makes our community unique today and every day.
Have an insightful reading,

Can spirituality enlighten your business?
SOME MAY SEE SPIRITUALLY-MINDED people and businesspeople at odds with one another. Truth is, being business oriented or being immersed on a spiritual path doesn’t determine failure (or success) in business. In fact, research shows that these two different ideals can work nicely together. Having spiritual values as a fundamental part of your business can actually increase productivity and profitability as well as employee retention, customer loyalty, and brand reputation. Although work might be the last place you think of as a spiritual practice, it requires as much trust, devotion, love, integrity, and purpose as a belief in
a Higher Power. Running a business can become an act of reverence just by shifting your attitude. Actually, the practice of bringing soulfulness to the world is possibly the most spiritual and transformative thing you can do. Business and spirituality: there truly is no separation.
| Walking Your Talk
As an entrepreneur in the mind-body-spirit segment, are you using spiritual principles and beliefs to run your business? Or do you leave them behind, only focusing on your bottom line the minute you open your shop? To understand the importance of walking your spirituality talk, I want to share my personal spiritual-business journey with you.
In the early ‘90s, I followed a loud-and-clear message delivered in a lucid dream, telling me: You need to open a shop. No further directions were given as to how to do that or what it was supposed to look like. Although I had no clue as to how to create or run a store, there was no doubt that I had to carry out the vision. As a spiritual teacher, and someone who dutifully listens to unsolicited otherworldly messages, I found myself doing nothing differently than practicing what I preach. So, instead of following a traditional business model, I began meditating, requesting guidance and direction. Instead of creating a budget for this venture, I asked for support from the Universe. Inventory was purchased by listening to the intuitive pulls of my Higher Consciousness. When I followed its lead, I would buy amazing items that would invariably sell out. If ignored, what I bought, believe it or not, would inevitably land on the sale table, or in a gift basket donation.
Since I ascribed to the power of intention, able to consistently manifest what I wanted and needed, I figured it would be a piece of cake to become profitable. During times when that wasn’t happening, I would address deeper levels of subconscious belief systems and karmic influences that were sabotaging success.
| What Does a Spiritual Business Look Like?
T he differences between a spiritual business and those that aren’t can appear to be subtle, at least on the surface. As you delve deeper, the disparities are profound.
One example is the way they perceive and react to various events. In a spiritual business, people are more aware that they’ve chosen their life circumstances, less likely to feel they are victims. Spiritual people are committed to treat each experience as an opportunity for personal growth. Thus, if they get angry, they’re more able to constructively work through the situation, seeing it as a lesson rather than justification to give up. They often have a clear, visionary focus, a heart-centered purpose beyond financial considerations. The vision is inspiring, causing them to put lots of energy, time and commitment into it. People want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. They feel a strong sense of purpose even if they don’t realize it. Employees choosing to work in a spiritual environment feel part of the mission, a sense of ownership and alignment with this purpose. They see job choices as an expansion of themselves, wanting to add value and contribute in meaningful ways rather than just bring home a paycheck.
When your shop is purpose-driven and meaningbased, customers want to do their best to help it succeed and be a part of its growth. Needless to say, this attitude is opposite from the culture of most traditional businesses. Business models are usually hierarchical, controlling, and determined primarily by financial considerations. Since spiritual people have a more humanistic approach, they sometimes forget that it’s impossible to run an organization without at least some structure and financial control. Conversely, conventional business sometimes forgets that it’s impossible to run a business without spirit. As the poet Kahlil Gibran reminds in The Prophet, “work is love made visible.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR: ROYCE AMY MORALES is the founder of Perfect Life Awakening. Consistent miracles would unfold by utilizing spiritual awareness tools. If things felt “off” for no apparent reason, I would do energy work to clear the space, or inner work to clear my headspace. Admittedly, it wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns, but we were successfully in business for 21 years!

| Keeping the Balance
In its most fundamental form, spirituality is feeling connected to something greater than self. It’s a personal experience that there’s something more to life than just a narrow, ego-oriented view. Bringing this relationship to everyday life is living spiritually. In business and in life, the balanced combination of logic, experience, information and spirituality is optimum. If one aspect outweighs the other, it can cause problems and overcompensation.
Veering way over to the spiritual side, ignoring fundamental smart business practices, usually doesn’t work. For example, never having sales, or constantly giving away merchandise to any “good cause” that asks for donations. Granted, your heart might be in the right place, but when your accountant sees how much you lost, get ready to hear the riot act.
It’s important to generate a mutually supportive partnership with your spiritual and logical sides, each in its place, and each knowing when to be the alpha dog. Of course, you are the one who determines which side to listen to and when (though there’s not much that can’t be dealt with from a spiritual place). Although each step you take can be based on trusting inner or spiritual guidance, there are times you may still need the advice of someone with cold, hard, business experience. But, that logic-based information still has to pass your spiritually-based awareness even if those business savvy folks think your choices are dicey.
| Stay True to Your Path
Even though left-brain advice and guidance has its place, using spiritual tools in business is just as important, if not more so. Business owners using Higher principles often make wiser decisions, solve problems more easily, build authentic relationships, are more productive, prosperous, creative, experience less stress, and achieve that enigmatic work/ life balance. Utilizing spirituality in business is certainly not without challenges. However, it can become grist for the mill that deepens Higher Consciousness awareness and strengthens spiritual connectedness. So much of a shop owner’s time is doing day-to-day work, things that don’t appear to be very spiritual. Yet, by shifting your perception to see that everything is spiritual, you can have a purposeful, meaningful and holy opportunity in any and all situations. Being immersed in a right-brain spiritual practice while trying to be left-brained business minded can be tricky. But keep in mind that once you’re on a spiritual path, the Universe won’t allow veering and will assist you in wondrous ways. Here are some suggestions to help you stay your spiritual course and simultaneously be a successful business owner. Know that you can’t fake it – customers can pick up on inauthentic spiritual vibes:
Suggestions for your spiritual course...
Choose meaningfulness. Everything you do is as spiritual and meaningful as you choose it to be. Every single day you are changing your corner of the world in some way, and you may never know how you’ve impacted or inspire someone.
The real meaning of success. Society has its own definition of success – making lots of money, but that doesn’t need to be yours. Are you feeling joy in what you’re doing, bringing joy to others? Do you support others in some way? Are you taking a stand for something you believe in? That’s true success.
Love is the answer. No matter what you have to do each day as a store owner, being Love is truly your Highest spiritual practice. What are those customers who come in to browse and never purchase anything teaching you about love? What are children who mess up displays teaching you? What are perpetually late employees teaching you? The lessons that can take you to more love are endless if you are mindful.
Look deeply within. Utilize running your shop as a way to dive deeper inside. Owning a business presents constant mirrors to reflect what’s truly going on inside, subconsciously. Low sales could reflect how deserving you really feel. Indecisive customers could be a message about your own level of commitment. Allow your business to assist you in getting in touch with negative attitudes, fears, belief systems and karma – potent aspects of a spiritual journey.
Just ask. The Universe answers requests if asked with the intention to receive answers. Ask that your connection to spirituality be “louder” or more concrete. Ask for “signs” or “messengers” (people who drop into your life with something important to tell you even if they don’t realize what their message is). Ask that answers show up in your dream state.
How’s your personal integrity?
Every business owner faces times when it’s easier to not do what’s right. Yet, taking the approach that ultimately doing the right thing will be supported, the choice is always easy. Decide from a soul-based, open-hearted place honoring your sense of ethics, understanding the power of karma (cause and effect). Have an attitude of constantly cleaning things up (even if you don’t know why).
What are you selling? Do you feel right about what you’re selling? Spiritually aware shops are taking measures to reduce their ecological footprint, making sure offerings are ethically made, Fair Trade and perhaps have soul nurturing or spiritually based messages. Being concerned about profit margins is fine, but be just as concerned about the interconnection of life on this planet.
Give/receive balance. Most spiritual practices emphasize the importance of giving or tithing. There’s a spiritual “law” that says you receive in direct proportion to what you have freely given. So, contributing and donating are actually ‘paying it forward,’ as long as your motives are purely loving.
Be a living example. Who you are with customers and employees is the highest spiritual message you give, it comes from compassion, true caring, and authentic connection.
Be non-attached. Spiritual practices emphasize the ephemeral aspect of life, the importance of letting go. Even though you are selling “things,” practice non-attachment. Big money sales are nice, but don’t encourage shopping addiction.
Know you know. Intuition is your internal spiritual antenna, hardwired to receive wise answers from your Higher Consciousness and the Universe. Ask to be guided and trust how it communicates with you, even if it doesn’t seem
logical. If you don’t, you’ll probably find out soon enough why you should have.
If you feel pulled to do something, say something, purchase something, do; if you feel an illogical aversion or hesitancy to something, listen! Use your intuition to help customers find what they didn’t even know they were looking for. Notice “coincidences,” serendipitous events that draw your attention. That’s spirit talking directly to you.
Utilize
spiritual soul-utions. That might be as simple as applying feng shui principles to re-design your shop, using prayer or meditation, having a spiritual blessing performed, creating an altar of some kind.
Spiritually based businesses have much better “self-healing” mechanisms due to an inherent commitment to lovingly resolve problems. When something goes wrong, spiritual people have a natural tendency to bring it back on course. In non-spiritual organizations, people break agreements, get angry with each other, and problems get locked in. However, be open to accepting deeper internal fixes or external help when needed.
Don’t push it. As a shop owner, part of your responsibility is to develop a workplace where people experience and express connectedness, acceptance, peace, trust and sense of purpose. However, using spirituality in a controlling or dictatorial way will certainly kill that energy. Your personal beliefs might be very real to you, but don’t force them on anyone else, especially employees.
On a spiritual level, you know what you are supposed to be doing with your life. Your spiritual connection tells you when you’re on track, nudging you in various ways when you’re not in alignment. Tune in and trust it because it is your greatest business success mentor. •
BUSINESS & MARKETING
Social Media Best Practices for Small Businesses
ALMOST 70 PERCENT of American adults use social media. As of January 2020, Facebook was the favored social media platform among marketers worldwide, with 94 percent of responding social media marketers stating they use it to promote their business, while 76 percent of respondents use Instagram. While it’s certainly possible to run a small business without using social media, it’s challenging since so many people use social media to keep abreast of what’s going on in the world –including news from the shops they support. With that said, here are six best practices to maximize your time and energy using social media this year.
1
Conduct a social media audit. Review all of your social media accounts. Which ones are performing well? Which no longer serve your purpose? This is also a great time to update the profile image and basic contact information for the ones you intend to keep. Delete accounts that no longer serve your needs.
2
Figure out your best platform.
This is an important part of the process. It won’t matter if you spend most of your time marketing on Facebook if your audience tends to hang out on Instagram or Pinterest. Evaluate your customer base. Ask them what social media platforms they prefer to use to see content for your type of business. If you’re not on social media at all or have only been dabbling in it by posting sporadically and without intention, this is the time to experiment with one or two platforms.
3
Create a calendar and content library. One of the easiest ways to get overwhelmed and set aside social media is when you feel pressured to come up with content on the fly. Commit an hour or two a week to draft the content for that week. Use scheduling tools to help you post them automatically at the time you want them posted. If you think of something fun to post mid-week, resist the urge to post. Instead, put it in your content library and refer to it during your next time block. This will help you feel less stressed about constantly feeding the social media beast and having content for the next time you sit down to create your posts.
4
Engage. Use being a small business to your advantage! Unlike big box stores, you have the opportunity to get to know many of your customers at a more personal level. Build and strengthen those relationships by engaging with them.
According to a new report by GlobalWebIndex, more than 40 percent of digital consumers use
social networks to research new brands or products. Part of that process involves the excitement of learning about your business. Another benefit of engagement is that it helps with algorithms. Social media platforms reward engagement by showing your content to more people since it thinks it’s of interest to its users.
5
Experiment with video. Most of us have come to expect some sort of visuals with our social media and more than half of Millennials and Gen Z users admits their most recent fashion buys were a result of images they saw on social media, according to e-marketer. Videos are fast becoming a fun way for retailers and wholesalers to show off their products in a way that provide customers a better sense of the product from a variety of angles.
It’s important to remember that you don’t always have to be in your place of business to post images or videos. One retailer I follow often posts videos of her cooking in her kitchen – using kitchen accessories from her shop. Another did an impromptu “how to wear a scarf” video in her backyard using a new line of scarves. It’s a good reminder that we aren’t selling stuff – customers are buying items to enhance their life and video helps bring products to life.
6
Track results. None of this will matter if you don’t see results. Each platform offers analytics on the backend and it’s worth evaluating your results regularly. You’ll start to notice patterns you can use to improve your engagement. Are you finding more people are responding to images or videos? Or are they having fun responding to questions or polls? Get creative and add more of that content. You won’t know what’s working if you don’t bother to look at the data.
Social media favors engagement, no matter the size of your business. Use it to connect with your customers, reach new ones and have fun. If it seems like too much, start small and grow from there. •

How to Start Selling Online
UNTIL SPRING OF LAST YEAR, not having an ecommerce store for your brick and mortar would be perfectly normal. It’s another point of focus for any store owner and manager and if the foot traffic took all of your time, e-commerce wasn’t needed. But that all changed in March of 2020, and the mad scramble for e-commerce began. My inbox was peppered with questions from my wholesale customers about e-commerce and recommendations for how to get a site up quickly. Suddenly, store owners who long resisted the internet were in immediate need of a website. Many new websites and creative e-commerce ideas were launched and still some store owners ditched the idea and waited out the first pandemic shutdown. As November rolled around and infection rates skyrocketed again, the holdouts were talking websites one more time. My inbox was again filled with the same questions and this time, I asked back, “Why are you not online yet?”
|
Why Are You NOT Online Yet?
Your answer to this question is what will show you the way forward for your business’ online presence. You may not have a site, you may have an online store that is not doing as well as you wanted it to, or you may be social media heavy and have no time to put all of your products online. Creating a full-fledged e-commerce site is a large and tedious job with a million micro decisions, but it can double your revenue in the long run. Ask yourself this question right now (and jot down your answer): “What stops me from creating an e-commerce website?” It is a simple question that may have a multi-layered answer. Write it all down. You will look at this information again to create the online experience that suits your business.
| Where Do You Want to Drive Sales?
In past articles, I have talked about marketing and websites and how much attention they need to be successful. “If you build it, they will come.” Is not a strategy. Even during the pandemic shutdown, your customers were shopping everywhere, they were not waiting for you to get your e-commerce self together.
To be successful, you must define what you want to be successful at. Do you want to drive traffic to your brick and mortar store? Do you want to drive traffic to your classes (online or in-person), do you want to sell your one-of-a-kind items? Are you
wanting to keep your readers busy? What do you want your online or e-commerce to do for you?
My phone conversation with a friend in May, who moved her resale boutique in February to a space triple the size, was a little heartbreaking and hopeful. She was open for three weeks before she had to shut down. After a month of no business, she went back to her first marketing technique and posted pictures of items for sale on social media. There were styled one-of-a-kind outfits that were drool worthy and totally affordable. It was heartbreaking to hear of the full showroom of summer dresses that were laying fallow and it was hopeful to hear about her daily sales goals being met by selling items via social media.
Another retailer in California started doing 30-min Facebook live posts to promote the crystals that were hard to sell online. As they generated funds from these live posts, they streamlined their products to a manageable website. They were going to go deep with a few key items and selling off the rest. A new specialist in their industry.
A Canadian retailer listed all her products online and tied it to her point of sale. Everything she buys goes online and she is a one-stop shop. It has taken a lot of time, but she is in it for the long haul and is treating this as two business models with two crews. Next step is marketing and getting noticed.
A local designer who made their money at fairs and conventions teamed up with an online retailer and took their products to Amazon. Five billion people now see their products and they are almost back to regular income levels from Amazon alone. There are many ways to create e-commerce in your business, deciding what you want out of this sales avenue helps you drill down to the options that fit you. The next questions you must ask yourself are, “What do I want to get out of my website?” and “Am I able and willing to put the effort and investment in to get there?”
Your resources (time and money) and your ecommerce vision must match for your website to get off the ground. Keep the answers to these questions top-of-mind as you plan and build your website. In 2019, Coventry Creations launched a redesign of our site. It was super fancy with lots of style and options,

and it crashed our sales. Four weeks of no sales at all and we restored our old site. Sales popped right back up and we realized that we lost sight of what we wanted our e-commerce to do for us – make sales.
| What Do You Want to Sell?
| Can You Build the Site Yourself?
If you are not comfortable with technology, too busy, don’t want to learn anything new, or are impatient, do not try to tackle a website on your own.
If you cannot master emails, do not attempt this. If you have never heard of HubSpot, you may quickly get confused by the new options out there. If the above does not apply to you, got for it! There are several excellent options that will sync with your POS or that are easy to build yourself. Shopify, Wix, SquareSpace, HostGator, and GoDaddy are well- known for their point, click and drag ease of building a website.

Not all products are created equal. Not all products sell well online or have the return on investment you need to justify their sale. For instance, our company does not sell individual votives online as it would cost more to ship one votive than what it sells for. Mixing your own bag of incense sticks or selling a one-dollar sticker does not translate well into e-commerce. Is the item easily breakable? Will it melt in transit? There are items that need extra packing material and special handling. Are you ready for that increase in labor and material needed for that specialty item and did you factor those costs into your sales price? What you sell online is a cross between price point, profit, ease of packing, and cost of shipping. Scan your inventory and start with the easiest, most profitable items. Are they unique to you? Are they competitive in pricing online? Then ask yourself, “What products do I really want to invest and focus my marketing efforts on?” Look at this choice as part of your business branding. If you are known for your one-of-a-kind pieces but put together a site of mass market items, you are breaking your brand.
If you don’t want a whole website, Instagram and Facebook have stores you can set up right in your social media and there is Facebook Marketplace rabbit hole that is trending. Etsy, eBay, Amazon, Jet, Walmart, and Sears are destination sites where you can create your own store within their site and sell to their entire mass market. These may be easier places to start posting products and testing your e-commerce savvy without committing to your own ecommerce site. However, before you take on this challenge ask yourself, “How much time do I have to dedicate to building a website or listing products?” Even the simplest of site or listings will take a minimum of 40 hours to research, learn, master, and execute. A full-blown website is easily a 100-hour job. Building a website after hours may mean it never gets launched. Part of your website cost will be paying the staff that will take on your normal duties while you focus on this. If you are known for your one-of-a-kind pieces but put together a site of mass market items, you are breaking your brand.
| Stepping into E-Commerce
Building your own site or hiring a freelance designer still requires some basics that you need to know, such as: hosting services, content management systems, digital certificates, shopping carts, shipping options, and more.
Hosting Services. Shopify, Wix, SquareSpace, Network Solutions, etc. Your website will live on their servers and many of them offer one-stop websites based on their proprietary aps.
Content Management Systems.
WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and other are options for hosting the content of your site. This includes
front page and/or blog pages. Most platforms have their own hybrid CMS. This is important if you are moving from one platform or developer to another as some are not compatible.
Shopping Carts.
Hosting services like Shopify are driven by their proprietary shopping cart, some hosting services let you choose the shopping cart.
Digital Certificates.
This encrypts your website so people cannot steal your customers’ credit card information. Most full-service hosting services also provide this with an extra fee. Merchant account services will require this as part of their terms of service. The digital certificate gives your site the lock icon showing your customers their data is safe on your site.
Shipping applications. Ship
Station and Pirate Ship are separate applications outside of your website that can import your orders and simplify the postage buying and shipping process.
There are dozens of articles online that rate the different website service sites. Spend time googling and reading your options before you talk to a professional website builder. If you are speaking the same language, you are more likely to get what you want from them.
| Finding a Pro What to Look For
As tempting as it is to go with the less expensive options of your neighbor’s cousin that likes to build things online or your nephew that is just getting into the website developer business, understand it will probably cost you sales in the future.
You need someone who knows how to make a website that people will go to and buy things and someone who will be there when the site goes down. Prices will vary depending on the reputation, expertise, workload, and guarantee of the designer. If this is your first time building a website, go for something simple and easy to navigate. Add more polish later. The most successful e-commerce sites sell product on their front page. People generally only click twice to get to a product or the range or products they want to look at. Take a tip from the major retail sites, from Amazon to Zappos, shopping is the most important thing on their front page. Impress your shoppers with the product, not the website design.
Show the developer the favorite sites that you personally buy from and what you like about them. Listen to what the developer is recommending. Did they incorporate your business ideals and needs in their presentation? Make sure your contract has deadlines and expectations that are tied in with payments. Pay as you go with the final payment due once the site is live and functioning. As you are looking for a professional, ask yourself these questions: “Does this firm represent similar values as my business?” “What other sites have they done and are they successful?” “Do they specialize in e-commerce?” “Did they actually listen to me and come up with a concept that reflects my business?” “Does this meet my needs and ideals that I listed earlier?” “Can they help me market this site?”
| Prepping Your Business for E-Commerce
Before you start building your business site, be sure you know if e-commerce works with your internal business processes. Are you ready to market and advertise your new site? Will your staff be able to handle the new needs of shipping and answering web related questions? Below is a list of new needs a website will bring to you:
Product Pictures. Where will you source the images? Will you download them from your vendors or take the pictures yourself? Not all vendors have useable pictures.
Product Descriptions & Codes.
After the image, the product description is what will sell the product. You may find yourself writing lots of copy for your website.
Shipping Options. How are you going to ship your orders? What carrier? How are you going to package them? Downloading the orders is quick, packing them can take all day. Set up your USPS, UPS, or FEDEX accounts and see what training and support they offer. From boxes to packing materials, to shipping tape, you have a new stack of supplies to purchase.
Work Area. If your site is successful, you will need a dedicated area to ship your orders. Plan your space ahead of time.
Staff Training. This will be a new daily process for your staff. Document, train and have the contact information for customer questions they cannot answer.
Setting up e-commerce can be as demanding as opening a new business. This is all quite different than running a brick-and-mortar business and can create a new stream of income that happens while you are sleeping. Before you jump into the deep end with an e-commerce site think about your lifestyle and how much time and energy you want to invest. Starting on mass market sites like Amazon, Bonanza, Sears, eBay, or Etsy may be the testing ground for online sales. Ask your colleagues and watch how other stores are entering the e-commerce world, watch for what excites and inspires you and do that. No matter what you chose, create an advertising and marketing budget. If no one knows you have a site, they are not going to shop there. •
INTERVIEW
Hear with Evelyn Mulders
EVELYN MULDERS IS THE FOUNDER of the Kinesiology College of Canada, a senior faculty member for the International College of Professional Kinesiology Practice, owner and operator of Holistic Tapestries Natural Care Center for more than 20 years, and a book author.
Through her work with clients at her center, Evelyn discovered that incorporating vibrational remedies into their therapy helped them to heal more quickly. She explored ways to incorporate sound into a consumable medium and through that work, she was able to program water with sound. But once she accomplished that, she realized people didn’t understand what she had done. So she documented her methods, including formulations, and wrote The Essence of Sound. She included her knowledge of herbs, flower essence and aromatherapy in the book
as well since they complement the benefits of sound healing. The work has resulted in somewhat of an encyclopedia for energy healers.
Retailing Insight: Can you tell readers a little bit about what they will find in your book?
Evelyn Mulders: The Essence of Sound was solely created for anyone to sort through what’s going on in their body and what they could choose to help them on a vibrational level using sound. For example, if you were suffering from a stomachache, you could look to see what chakra, or meridian the body was pointing to and then find the answers to help.
The focus is on sound, however the book walks you through the meridians, the chakras and the auric field. The thinking when I wrote the book was to take the reader through three dimensions – and we know we’re in three dimensions because our bodies have three directions – up and down, front and back, side to side. That’s who we are on a three-dimensional plane. The meridians support the body by running up and down, the chakras are in the front and back, and the auric fields surround
us for the side to side. It was a different approach because typically, if you were looking at healing, you’d delve deep into Chinese medicine theory and understand meridians and five-element theory. Or you would quickly go into the ayurvedic to understand the chakras and the auric field system. What’s special about The Essence of Sound is that it takes those three modalities and offers readers the information to support themselves on those three levels.
RI: What level of familiarity does a reader need to benefit from the book?
EM: I would say entry level. The world has changed so much since I initially presented this work. It was originally something for energy medicine colleagues, but what I’m noticing in the last five years is that the veil has lifted, so to speak. People are seeking
information and this book is a nice overall view that includes so many modalities that might otherwise take weeks of reading. But here, they’re touched upon and you can take it further to a deeper knowledge book on a particular modality if one really resonates.
RI: What inspired you to focus on sound energy and healing?
EM: I was studying herbology with a woman, not in the classroom, but in the woods here in Canada. I’m left-brained, my background is as an engineer technologist. For me to go into this garden where I was told to just feel it, it was a huge brain shift for me from a logical thinker to a feeler. As time went on, she brought in what she called a sound healer. The woman played these crystal bowls and I felt like every cell in my body had shifted and just sang. I wasn’t sick, but I felt I had changed. The next morning, I said I felt so great that I wanted to bottle it for my clinic. I wanted people to walk away from my clinic to have the same feeling I had from that sound bath. I asked if you could infuse sound into matter and she told me she didn’t know – it was my job to figure it out! So after a few years of experimenting with sound in a bottle, I discovered how to program water with sound.
RI: Is there any musical piece you’ve come across that you feel aligns people and their energy?
EM: I’ll see if I can do it . . . (sings The Sound of Music). Now, the other example is the Do-Re-Mi song. If you went through that whole piece, you are balancing every single one of your chakras.
RI: How does sound healing tie into your work at the Kinesiology College? What’s the hierarchy? Where does it sit in comparison to herbology or other methods of healing?
EM: What hooked me into kinesiology are what we call “finger modes.” We do an assessment of the body and then we ask what it needs. But instead of asking verbally, we use finger modes. Each one of these fingers delineates a system, a circuit if you will, in the body. Does the body need something electrically? Emotionally? Spiritually? Does it need some
kind of personal ecology (herbs and supplements)? Does it need something structurally?
Sound healing fits in because it can provide something emotionally or spiritually. Sound is what the universe started with, it’s the key to the miracle of life.
RI: With pressure points, let’s say in the foot –different spots correspond to different systems in the body. Is there a parallel example with sound? Are there notes that would be aligned to different organs in the body?
EM: It depends on what system you want to look at. With the meridians for example, if you had stomach issues, likely it’s the earth element with the stomach and the spleen meridian. In The Essence of Sound, you’d go through the earth section to see what would support you there. If you’re looking at the chakra, it would be the solar plexus because that’s the area of location of your imbalance with a stomachache. In that section, you would have choices of what would support you and
When I created the chakra essences with the seven whole notes in the water, I was intuited to add to that master formula with sound of the gemstones related to the chakra, the sacred geometry, the ancient symbols, the positive words that were associated with that, and aroma therapy. It took me almost four years to figure out why I needed to include all those vibrations instead of just sound, the whole note, by itself. The chakra wanted the combination. In that combination everything becomes more powerful because you have the seven vibrations that feed the seven senses. So having all seven vibrations in one bottle offered the body the opportunity to take the vibration it needed. The body has the vibration, if it’s missing something though, it will grab it. If it doesn’t need it, it doesn’t take it. As a healing practitioner, it was a neat place to be because you could never get it wrong. You could offer the body what it needed and it would take it in with its own wisdom.
an explanation of why you’re having those problems – too much worry, or angst, or doing too much for everybody else. In the chakra section, the areas related to that are will, self-esteem, individualism, and it goes through the seven senses – the color yellow, the note E, the gemstones related to that chakra, the aromatherapy related to it, the flower essences, the herb essences, the essential oils.
RI: With the outside world getting louder and more invasive seemingly on a daily basis, is it more difficult today for people to tune into healing sounds and nature?
EM: Personally, I like the quiet. At home, I don’t have background noise like you might hear when visiting someone else’s home. But everyone has their own thing. Some people like listening to country rock all day, some like opera. I don’t know if I have a comment on that. I think it’s personal.
RI: What kind of starting points would you recommend for someone looking to explore sound healing? Obviously you have your book, but is there something like checking out a singing bowl to see how that makes you feel or like your experience with the crystal bowls? Do people walk into a store and try things and see if something aligns?
EM: When you go to the metaphysical store for the first time and you start playing the bowl, you’ll see some people will grimace because it’s not what they’re expecting, they’re not used to it. For me, there’s a steel instrument
that you kind of bong with your hand and I don’t find it soothing at all. So I think to answer your question, it’s another place where it’s personal.
But here’s what I do know –your own sound is probably the most important sound in the world for you. Your name is the most important sound. When someone says your name and they say it correctly, it sends a vibration to every cell in your body. My parents are Dutch and they gave me a Dutch name, but in English it comes out very different. You pronounce it “evel-lin,” but my cousins call me “eh-v ə -LEEN.” Can you feel the difference in those two sounds? When I go to Holland and visit my cousins, I just feel like a little baby tucked into a cradle because I’m “eh-v ə -LEEN.” It’s soft and loving and nurtures my heart. “Evel-lin” doesn’t hardly do that for me. Where I’m going with this is that you need to listen to your heart. Try humming. Try doing the Julie Andrews song and listen to where those sounds come in.
RI: Years back, I discovered if I had a tension headache, I could hum low in my chest, bring it up to head voice and back down and it would usually alleviate the pain. Is that something in line with what you’re explaining?
EM: I’d love for you to include your experience with that because that I think is the true essence of sound healing, your own experience and the fact that we can do it ourselves is wonderful! There’s this one piece, I’m not sure if I can do it, but it’s all the “C” sounds of the
chakra and it’s reminiscent of the digeridoo. How it came out of my mouth one day, I have no idea. At the time, it definitely frightened my son! “Mom! What are you doing?”
When I teach the classes on the energy medicine, everyone’s nervous and giggling when they’re trying to do it, but if you get a chance to do it, it moves the energy. And like you with your humming, it takes all the stress out.
RI: And you have a card deck coming out?
My biggest hope now is to deliver several tools for people to empower themselves in their own homes to help balance their meridians and chakras. •
EM: When the whole journey started, I wrote a book called Western Herbs for Eastern Meridians and Five Element Theory That was the predecessor to The Essence of Sound. That’s where I organized the herbs to fit into the meridian system. Back in the day, if you wanted to use the herbs as the balancing modality, you’d have to study traditional Chinese medicine. I did, but not for long. I got irritated because I thought about all the herbs I was growing in my backyard and questioned why I couldn’t use the herbs I grow. So I took all the Chinese herbs out of my clinic. The next day, I came in and put herbs that I grew on the shelves where the Chinese herbs were and the whole vibration of the space just changed. Then I knew I was onto something. I began organizing for my reference, what herbs grow in our area that fit into the meridian system. I developed a chart – fire, earth, metal, water, wood, and organized the herbs how I saw fit. Then I presented it at the international conference. They endorsed my work and asked where the book was. It took many years, but I worked on it. I thought I was done, but realized the plants had to have their say, had to have the chance to connect. So I worked on it another two years until everything felt right. To get it aligned with The Essence of Sound, it’s been renamed The Essence of Herbs It’s offered as an eBook. From that, there’s a card deck that’s just been developed called Whispering Herbs Healing Cards

Traditional Shopping Experience
THERE IS NO QUESTION that the global pandemic has wreaked havoc in the business world within every facet of the supply chain. Retailers had it especially tough, particularly as many were forced into closure for a time based on governmental lockdowns. Unfortunately, the pandemic spelled the end for some retailers. Those who were fortunate enough to survive reopened to several changes: some businesses reduced hours, others had no choice but to lay off staff, and most implemented safety protocols, such as plexiglass, mask requirements for employees and customers, hand sanitizer stations, and limiting the number of customers in the store at any given time.
Though retailers may feel as if they are facing an uncertain future, particularly because stay-athome advisories are being reimplemented as the pandemic surges again in the winter months, the good news is that the traditional, in-person shopping experience is still valued by the majority of
consumers. Although online shopping is certainly convenient, there is very little that replicates the experience of browsing in a store, having interactions with people, of engaging all the senses, marveling at creative displays, and the joy of finding just the right item on a shelf in a cute little shop. Even in an increasingly uncertain world, brick and mortar shops are here to stay because they offer shoppers something that they cannot get online: a personalized experience.
| One-of-aKind Items
You can search the internet for hours, but there is no substitute for wandering through a store, gazing at appealing merchandise, and stumbling upon a gem in a charming gift shop replete with treasures from around the neighborhood or world.
Beth Rich Brown owns Mix It Up, a 2,700-squarefoot store located in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Brown feels fortunate to live in a tourist town that is busy three seasons out of the year, and her prime location in the heart of the main shopping district of town is a boon. Brown carries accessories, jewelry, pillows, local art, and has a wedding section and a kids’ section and much more. The way to keep customers coming in to the store is by consistently offering quality, unique merchandise that is more
difficult to find online or in a chain store. Brown said the key is to “…think outside the box with regard to your merchandise. You want to be unique. I shop the world over to make sure when you’re in our store, you’re finding things you’re not finding in a traditional store,” she said.
Gather is a 3,200-square-foot, two-story boutique in Sewickley, an upscale community outside of Pittsburgh. The home décor gift store is located in the center of Sewickley’s charming shopping village. “At any one time I might have 20+ local artisans represented as well as handmade goods from around the country. We also do carry national brands, but we try and stick to unique items, gifts and home décor you won’t find in a big box store or Amazon,” said owner, Denise Shirley.
| Customer Relationships
Customer service is something that cannot be replicated when making an online purchase. Sure, a customer service representative can help you over the phone or via email if you have an issue with an item, but nothing beats that in-person, whereeverybody-knows-your-name feeling.
Coeur d’Alene is a resort town, and while Mix It Up is well known by locals and regular vacationers, it is also a delightful discovery for those visiting the area for the first time.
Even though the store closed for five weeks at the outset of the pandemic last spring, Brown kept in touch with her customers. “We know our customers by name. I have a very, very loyal local customer base that we cherish and treat really well, and they support us all year long, which is just wonderful,” said Brown.
It’s the extra touches that go a long way. For example, Brown provides complimentary gift wrap and places custom orders for customers when requested. She’s also planning on implementing a rewards/frequent shopper system.
Shirley and her staff at Gather, have a policy to greet and personally welcome every customer that walks in the door, in keeping with her philosophy that you have to know who your customer is. “You have to remember details about your customer. You have to remember what candle scent they like. The size sweater their college-age daughter wears. You have to be an extension of your home. When someone comes into your store, they have to be getting an experience that they aren’t going to find in the mall. They have to feel welcome and recognized and acknowledged. It all comes down
to connection and relationships,” she said.
Shirley also went the extra mile for her customers while her store was closed for sixty days this past spring, offering curbside pickup and free delivery within the zip code. In the days leading up to Christmas, she also offered a private shopping experience option for customers who wanted to come in to the store without any other customers around. Another edge that smaller retailers have over both big box and online retailers is the ability to host in-person customer events, which is a good way to demonstrate gratitude to customers.
In a pre-Covid time, Jessica (Bud) Neiswender, co-owner of Inspirit Crystals, was also able to draw people to the store with a daily, in-person tarot reader, but she is unable to do that presently because space is too small. She did switch to a Skype and Zoom format, but sales are down for that as the group experience is what really sells it. “We’re currently working to set up a new scheduling online software, which will make it a lot easier for people to book an appointment.”
Inspirit Crystals is based in Northampton, Massachusetts, an old mill town with an oldfashioned main street. The store, which is packed floor to ceiling with about 2,700 items, carries a large variety of sage and incense, though the store’s main component is hundreds of varieties of crystals. Neiswender said that the store also carries books, tarot decks, and statuary from many faiths around the world.
Inspirit Crystals was closed for four and a half months. Even when the governor lifted restrictions,
the store was behind because of backorders on merchandise and a long wait for plexiglass shields. They’ve also had a huge reduction in hours, staff, and they are only allowing six customers in at a time. “It is a very different experience for people, but we’ve still seen a great response from customers,” Neiswender said, adding that many of them reached out via email and letters to show their support.
| Balancing E-Commerce
Some retailers began to offer or ramp up e-commerce options while their own stores were closed. At the beginning of 2020, Brown switched to using Shopify. “The beauty of Shopify is that once you have your images and inventory in their system it actually allows you to ‘build’ your online shopping website right from the Shopify platform. There is no need to know how to design a website and/ or hire someone to do it. We had the in-store system in place in January and then when we got shut down, we had the time to do some fine tuning and get the storefront online,” she said. Still, the majority of sales are inperson. In fact, Brown said that despite the pandemic, she is on track to supersede the 2020 sales goal that she set before the pandemic by more than 20 percent.
as a local brick and mortar shop in the heart of a village. “That’s not why people come to us. They come to us for the personal attention and the connection we have with them,” she said.
Still, e-commerce will appeal to a segment of the population. “I think there are customers for whom the in-person attention, knowing about them, knowing what they like and what they don’t like matters, and then there’s a contingency of shoppers who are looking for a deal and looking for convenience and for them, it’s a little less important,” said Shirley. “As store owner, it is imperative that you create a shopping experience that is memorable and targeted, and that the customer is going to desire that over the convenience of sitting on their couch and pushing a button.”
While e-commerce may have an edge over in-person shopping because of the click-of-a-button convenience, it cannot compete with the satisfaction and fun of a day out with friends, drifting in and out of stores. Shirley said that many people in Sewickley
make a day out of shopping, combining it with lunch at one of the village’s many eateries.
Marilyn Park owns Zazu Gifts in Ashburn, Virginia and sells a little bit of everything in her 2,500-square-foot store. Before Covid, she had a website presence but did not have e-commerce, though it had been on her ‘to do’ list. “Once Covid came, we put it on the fast track to get it up and running within a few weeks. It definitely was instrumental when we were in the beginning stages of the pandemic. We had a number of customers who would purchase online and do curbside pickup, or we would deliver or ship to them. Once we opened our doors back up, our e-commerce has continued to grow and we still have customers who will order online and come in to pick up their order. We are continuing to ship locally and nationwide,” she said, adding that the website is still a work in progress, and she is continually refining it and adding products to it regularly.
Park feels that retailers can embrace an ecommerce platform as part of their business without
great job of selecting them for people, but it’s not the same,” said Neiswender.
Inspirit Crystals maintains a webstore created a few years ago, but it has not been the majority of how they do business. “Our online sales are nothing compared to the sales we do in person. Because a lot of people are coming in for crystals, they really like to select them themselves, hold them, spend time with them. We do sell crystals online and do a
“We always had an online shop, but it was never extensive. We did update it and actually completely changed the website after the pandemic. Since then, we had a photographer come in to take product photos, and our goal was by Thanksgiving to have close to 50-100 items online,” said Shirley.
Shirley said that while she has seen an uptick in her e-commerce sales, her store is viewed mainly
who have moved away and still love to shop at Zazu, and it’s enabled them to do that even though they are not close by. It also has allowed our local customers a way to browse,” she said. However, she said that customers expressed that they were very happy to be back shopping in person once the restrictions eased.
| 2021 Goals
Though the pandemic will still be with us into 2021, hope for a return to normalcy is on the horizon. Until that time is here, there are a few things that retailers can do in order to stay competitive. Brown suggests making use of social media to the fullest extent possible. “Facebook and Instagram are free. We’re all struggling to make ends meet; you
need to have your customers following you on those social media platforms, and you need to communicate with them and let them know what you have in the store,” she said.
Brown also said she is lucky to live in a town with a Chamber of Commerce that makes sure Coeur d’Alene is on the map. She also belongs to an arts and cultural alliance. The main message is to connect. “If there is an event you can participate in, participate. Get out there. Let people know that you’re there. Do what you need to do to be able to touch people as often as you can,” she said.
Neiswender believes the brick-and-mortar shopping experience is alive and well, particularly for a niche store like hers. For one thing, it is a full experience that engages the senses. “The store smells wonderful and is visually amazing, packed with unexpected things you didn’t know you needed. A little store like ours really draws people who are excited to come with kids, or girlfriends or someone getting alone time to shop,” she said.
Plus, it is supported by other businesses and restaurants in town, where an ecosystem of sorts is created. “You can spend a whole afternoon or weekend in my town and enjoy every bit of it. We survive not only by our own strengths, but we survive by having the support of other people around us,” said Neiswender. She advised connecting with other businesses in town to give customers more than one reason to come out shopping. “Have a cup of coffee coupon with a shopping coupon or some other little business in town, like a yoga studio or music store, to create a dual experience.”
Because of the isolation of 2020, people are craving human contact and interaction, and brick and mortar stores can provide that. Shirley said, “You don’t find that in the mall, and you don’t find that on Amazon. I think that locally-owned independent shops right now have a window of opportunity, if they can ride out the pandemic, to grab back the customer for whom convenience was the overriding factor and once again convince them that the special, unique experience you get at a locally-owned shop is a better experience.” •

The Modern Witch
WITCH? PLEASE!
Meeting the Modern Witch
UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN HIDING under an upturned cauldron somewhere, you might have noticed that witches are having a moment! A huge moment! A “you-can’t-buy-this-kind-of-positivepublicity” kind of moment that started a few years ago and doesn’t show any sign of letting up. As a woman who has identified as a witch since the ‘80s, I’ve seen witchcraft go from something that was hidden, feared, woefully misunderstood, and not even legally recognized as a religion, to become one of the fastest growing spiritual movements in the U.S. In fact, researchers estimate that there are 1.5 million Americans that identify as either Pagan or Wiccan, a number that surpasses the number of Presbyterians in this country. The occult isn’t so occult anymore.
While some folks complain about the “commodification” of witchcraft, I see witchcraft going mainstream as a positive. It’s an antidote to the anxiety of the past that kept many of my witchy siblings (witchlings?) in the broom closet, fearful that their beliefs would cause them to lose their jobs, have their children taken away, be classified as mentally ill, or be terrorized or even physically attacked. While we aren’t yet at the stage where witches everywhere feel completely safe, the direction that we are moving gives me a heart full of hope and happy feelings of love and support to all the new witches coming into the fold.
|
We Have Always Been Here
The fact is that, while witchcraft feels very of-themoment, it’s actually been around for millennia. If the definition of a witch is someone who casts spells, then witches pre-date all the major religions of the world and even written history itself. People have been using incantations, creating potions to harm or heal, and telling fortunes since ancient times and the people who practiced these arts were seen as assets to the community. In fact, in many cultures around the world, magic practitioners have continued to pass on their traditions and teach their practices uninterrupted, however, that wasn’t the case for European witchcraft.
Although people have been practicing witchcraft forever, it wasn’t until the Middle Ages in England that the word “witch” was first recorded and European people began to see witches as dangerous. After all, if you’re trying to control a population, you want to maintain a hierarchical structure. Allowing independent outliers to have power just won’t do. And so, witchcraft became a threat to the established order that needed to be put down.
Women, and some men, were suspected of being witches and became targets of terrorism.
For 300 years, from about 1450-1750, in Western Europe and the British colonies here in the states, anywhere from 40,000 to 100,000 people, mostly women, were executed for the crime of being witches in a mass hysteria called “The Burning Times.” Virtually all women were seen as a potential threat. Women who were herbalists, healers, and midwives were definitely suspect.
Women who were too intelligent, not intelligent enough, too powerful, or not powerful at all, too beautiful, or not appealing, could be seen as questionable. Women who were disenfranchised, mentally ill, or too rebellious were accused of witchcraft too. Let’s not forget that even Saint Joan of Arc, a fervent Christian, was burned at the stake for being a witch simply for the fact that she wore men’s clothing.
Women, and some men, were suspected of being witches and became targets of terrorism.
This centuries-long patriarchal terrorism was enough to relegate witchcraft, spell casting, and feminine power to the fringes of society where it remained hidden and “occult” until the 20th century.

20th Century Witches
As magic went underground, the old folk magic continued to be practiced, often dressed in a thin veneer of the dominant religion or cloaked as cultural activities (these activities were definitely not spiritual. Nope. No way. Uh-uh.) However, buoyed by the expansion of 19th century Spiritualism and new religions like Theosophy, as well as esoteric orders such as The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Ordo Templi Orientis, and the Rosicrucians as well as secret societies such as
the Freemasons, intrigue in witches and witchcraft began to bubble like a delicious witches’ brew.
In the middle of the 20th century, an Englishman named Gerald Gardner developed a new form of the “old religion” that he called Wicca, with its adherents being called “witches.” His choice in calling his religion Wicca, was not happenstance. The word “witch” comes from the Old English word “wicce” (originally pronounced “WITCH-ay”) and is the root of the name of his religion “Wicca” (pronounced “WICK-uh”). These words are believed to stem from “to know” or “to shape,” and it is often pointed out that knowing the workings of the spiritual realm and shaping reality to your desire are the basics of witchcraft. Although not all witches follow Wicca, Gardner’s melange of Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, and ceremonial magic has influenced much of what we consider witchcraft today.
While Gardner and others were reimagining witchcraft, another related set of religions were rising up from the utopian mystical counter-cultures of the 19th century. In the 1960s and ‘70s, wider

freedom of religious beliefs and back-to-the-land movements fed into interest in more earth-based and nature-connected religions of the past. These reconstructed or reimagined polytheistic naturebased religions began to identify as Neopagan or Modern Pagan with many of the adherents practicing magic and identifying as witches.
So what is a modern witch? A witch is a person (female, male or non-binary) who practices magic, whether as part of a formal religion or not. While Wicca and Neopaganism have witchcraft and magical practices at their center, not all witches today are Wiccans or Neopagans. Witches can be of any religion or even no religion at all. Witchcraft, at its heart, is the practice of magic – a practice that can be incorporated into any religion that doesn’t outright forbid it. In fact, I like to say that we all practice magic whether we identify as witches or not. Anytime you throw a coin in a fountain, walk around a ladder to avoid bad luck, say a prayer to a deity to ask for a favor, or speak an affirmation, you are doing a spell.

| Which Witch is Which?
Modern day witches are as varied as music fans. Just as one music fan might love rap and another adore pop music, the umbrella title of “witch” is used to describe anyone from a person who reads their horoscope and casually places crystals on their nightstand, to an initiated thirddegree high priestess. The title of “witch” is not one-size-fits-all. Not all witches are the same or practice the same, so understanding the different practices is helpful for understanding which witch is which. What makes a person a witch is that they call themselves a witch. And for those who call themselves witches, there are so many delightfully different witchy paths to choose from.
|
Hereditary Witch
A hereditary witch comes from a family where magic was practiced and traditions were taught from parent or grandparent to child. Hereditary witchcraft almost always comes from folk magic practices that may or may not have been called “witchcraft” outright. Like practices such as AfricanAmerican Hoodoo, Mexican-American curanderismo, Appalachian granny magic, Ukrainian Baba Szeptucha, Italian Stregheria, Romani magic, North Asian shamanism, hereditary witchcraft is something that is passed down from elders to the young. Each family’s practices have their own flavor, rituals, and belief systems, often co-existing side-by-side with other more mainstream religious practices.
| Traditional Witch
A traditional witch is a designation for someone who looks to the “old ways,” using historical context for their witchcraft and practices. They may research and look for documentation of old practices such as seasonal celebrations or folk magic practices that have been documented by historians and ethnographers to recreate or reinterpret these practices. Just as each culture and time period has had ways of doing magic, there are traditional witches who research and find their own path and those who follow initiated paths such as Cochran’s Craft, Sabbatic Craft or the Feri Tradition. Either way, the traditional witch looks to witchcraft sources that pre-date Gardnerian Wicca.
| Solitary Witch
While many witchcraft paths incorporate group rituals or covens, a solitary is a witch of any path or tradition who practices on his, her or their own. This solitary path can be by choice or because she, he, or they haven’t found other witches to work with. Some witchcraft paths such as the green witch or hedge witch paths lend themselves to solitary witchcraft, while witchcraft traditions that require initiation or group rituals are much more challenging to engage with as a solitary. Solitary practitioners often find books and workshops helpful for building their practice and their witchcraft skills.
| Kitchen Witch
Kitchen witches, or hearth witches, are witches who strive to integrate magic into their daily routine. They look at the mundane aspects of the day that are centered in and around the home, and look for ways to bring magic into them. This mental shift allows them to turn their everyday items into magical tools and their home into their sacred space. Kitchen witch practices include magical cooking, brewing, gardening, and magical and medical herbalism. They see the power of mindfully attending to these daily activities and adding spiritual intentions to these simple acts. Kitchen witches see the magic of decorating and crafting in the home and may make their own ritual tools so that they can imbue them with their energy. Kitchen witch rituals may include homey things like family gatherings, honoring seasonal changes, and blessing the home.
| Hedge Witch
Hedge witches have practices that are closely related to traditional shamanism. In the old days, they would have been the village cunning man or wise woman, living outside of the general community, but providing their neighbors with healing herbs and remedies. They identify closely with the natural world and practice what is known as “hedge jumping,” moving between the familiar and the wild, between this world and the spirit realm. Hedge witches communicate with the natural world of plants and animals, and the world of spirits and the supernatural. Many hedge witches are solitary witches, preferring to learn on their own and not within a coven, and to gain their magical knowledge independently. This makes sense as many of
their practices, such as astral projection, animal communication, and wildcrafting, are best when done alone.
| Ceremonial Witch
Ceremonial witches practice high magic or ritual magic and follow formal magical paths with elaborate and complex rituals. They belong to organizations such as The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Ordo Templi Orientis, and the Builders of the Adytum, which have initiations, degree ceremonies, and a hierarchy similar to organizations such as the Freemasons. Ceremonial witches may be interested in esoteric magical practices such as astrology, kabbalah, Enochian magic, and sex magic.
| Green Witch
Green witches are highly attuned to the earth and harnessing her energy for magical purposes. Similar to hedge witches and kitchen witches, they may garden and grow their own flowers, trees, herbs, fruits and vegetables for magical purposes. Most green witches also have deep ties to the wild and connect with the land where they live and practice magic with indigenous plants. Green witches primarily use plants for their spell work and are spiritually influenced by nature, the seasons, and the interconnectedness of the natural world.
| Eclectic Witch
Eclectic witches are not tied to one particular path. The eclectic witch find truths in many spiritual paths and pulls from these practices what feels true and right
to them. This intuitive selection of many truths from many sources leads to a highly personalized path. No two eclectic witches have the same set of beliefs; each path is unique to the individual. Some eclectics practice as solitary witches while others gather for ritual with other open-minded souls, but all eclectic witches are self-directed individualists who are unafraid to blaze their own trails.
| Secular Witch
Not every witch worships a god and a goddess. Secular witches are witches who do not worship a deity or deities in their spiritual practice. They see the power of their magic as either coming from within themselves or coming from an impersonal identifiable power such as nature or the
“life force.” Sometimes called atheist witches, secular witches can practice other forms of witchcraft that do not depend on the worship of deities, such as Green Magic or Kitchen Witchery.
This “witch list” is by no means complete and is definitely open for interpretation. Even if you don’t identify as a witch, you might see a little bit of yourself in one of these witchy paths. Throughout history, witches have always been interesting and unique individuals: free-spirited, brave, groundbreaking and empowered. There’s no doubt that we will see more interpretations of witches and witchcraft as this spiritual group grows. Hey, maybe you’ll invent the next new witchy flavor! •

Soundings of the Planet www.soundings.com 800-93 PEACE (800-937-3223) wholesale@soundings.com music, books, sound healing, meditation, wellness, yoga, Dean Evenson, Dudley Evenson
Soundings of the Planet celebrates over 40 years of Peace Through Music. In 1979 when Dean Evenson first added the sounds of dawn birdsong to the peaceful music of flute and harp he and his wife Dudley were creating, he had no idea he was starting a new genre of music. People had never heard such relaxing music. Over the years, the Evensons have collaborated with outstanding musicians including d’Rachael, Deobrat Mishra, Peter Ali, Scott Huckabay, Li Xiangting, and Tom Barabas. In addition to their award-winning CDs and DVDs, Dean and Dudley’s book Quieting the Monkey Mind: How to Meditate with Music brings together their four decades of practicing and teaching meditation and making healing music. A Year of Guided Meditations: 52 Weekly Affirmations is their second book. Soundings Podcast won COVR Visionary Awards Electronic Media of the Year and their Healthy Living Dreams Blog won COVR Visionary Awards Best Blog. Visit their two YouTube Channels: Soundings of the Planet and Soundings Mindful Media.
