Retail Design Trends for 2020 By Hilary Daninhirsch Decisions about what merchandise to sell is an important component of gift shop ownership, but perhaps equally crucial is store design, followed by product placement. After all, shop owners are storytellers, and the goal should be to convey that story in an understandable and memorable way. Joanne Rossman is the owner of a gift shop of the same name, with the tagline: purveyor of the unnecessary and irresistible. The Roslindale, Massachusetts business is in a cozy 405-squarefoot Victorian storefront. Rossman is purposeful in the items she carries, such as items that give back and Fair Trade items. “I try hard to have them have some kind of message,” she said. That message is clear from the outset, and she has lots of stories to tell…literally. “I sell a number of books, and the books become part of the story of whatever I’m selling,” she said. And that is the point: incorporating key design elements in a store design will better enable a store owner to relay that story while taking the customer on a specific journey.
Sustainability Trending currently is sustainable design, which seeks to reduce the impact on the environment. It also encompasses utilizing reclaimed materials. Sarah Jo Sautter is director of marketing with JGA Designs, a global design firm based in Southfield, Michigan that does everything from strategic planning of a store, to prototyping, to construction service. To illustrate sustainable design, Sautter said that her firm repurposed reclaimed wood for a gift shop client. “We were doing a new building from the ground up and tore another building down on site, we used some of the wood from that building and reused it to make some of the tables that we built in the gift shop,” she said.

Another retail client was moving into an old space, but wanted to maintain the historic integrity of the building. The client chose to keep an old staircase intact and made it the focal point of the store. Sautter said that while sustainability has been a buzzword in design for a while, the industry is seeing it more and more. “Some clients are trying to figure that out not just with materials, but with how they’re relaying their message; that social responsibility and what they are doing to impact the community. We’re showcasing that in not only the way we’re designing the store, but in the message of the store and the displays,” she said. Brian Weltman, CEO and creative director of Retail Habitats Design headquartered in San Diego said, “On the sustainability front, we’ve been seeing more materials made from reclaimed waste such as ocean plastic, cardboard, and textile fibers. We’ve been kicking it kind of ‘old school’ lately and sticking to simple, raw materials such as plywoods, concrete, and terracottas,” he said.
Smart Technology There is a demand for smart technology in retail spaces, though this can be limited by budget and by space. Weltman said that more and more retailers are turning to in-store analytics and radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology to measure traffic, target customer messaging and track inventory. “LED lighting technology and controls also seem to improve each year which can have a big impact on the overall store environment as well as energy efficiency. Some of our bolder clients have recently asked us to explore AR or VR solutions to further enhance the in-store customer experience as well,” he explained.
Color and Shape Color is a very personalized design element. Depending on the store, color can be utilized in a myriad of ways. Rossman, for example, always merchandises her products in a colorful theme, perhaps putting an indigo scarf on the same table as a book that has an indigo cover. “I don’t always just do color, but I try to do things that you would not necessarily find next to each other. It’s a surprise. So many people shop

online, so when they come in, they like to make a discovery,” said Rossman. “We all know money is tight, and there is a variety of places a shopper can put their funds, but if they get intrigued and charmed by a product, that is often what they’ll buy.” Still, Sautter said that she is seeing neutral tones that are a bit richer, specifically, colors that can work with various other colors. “A lot of what we’re seeing is simplified design.

Sautter reported that she is seeing more shop owners develop signature scents and changing them out with the seasons so that it always feels fresh, though Weltman cautions that this can be risky, as everyone experiences scent different. For a tactile experience, Sautter said

We don’t want a lot of color because we want the products to speak for the color and don’t want to fight with that,” she said. What goes around comes around, and in some retail spaces, it’s the ‘80s and ‘90s all over again. “I’ve been seeing a lot of emerald or hunter green color palettes with brass and gold accents and very dramatic marble patterns. I’ve also seen more pink hues, large floral patterns, terrazzo surfaces, and curved furniture lines lately,” said Weltman.
Engaging the Senses As much as possible, it is important to engage the customers’ senses so that shopping becomes an experience, one that can outcompete the inherently impersonal nature of shopping online. In a retail setting, perhaps sight is most important. “A beautifully designed and well-planned store is proven to cause customers to dwell longer and spend more,” said Weltman. Music also can translate into beautiful

that stores are offering more opportunities to engage, such as having a separate area for the customer to actually work on personalizing a gift item. “One client asked for a separate workspace to host events, where groups could come in and work on a project,” she said. Rossman also encourages the tactile sense, putting out items that beg to be touched, such as cashmere scarves, throws, and soft slippers. Most customers welcome the opportunity to taste free samples. Rossman offers samplers of food that she sells in the store, such as jams from Upstate New York, licorice from Denmark, or honey from the Carolinas.
Wellness There’s a wellness movement afoot, and retailers are capitalizing on this. Sautter said she has put in coffee bars or other hospitality-type features so customers will not only have an experience, but feel comfortable and want to stay even longer.
“We often add a ‘natural touch’ to our designs. No matter if it is a spa, restaurant, or gift shop, a sense of wellness and relaxation always feels like a welcome respite. Living walls make great brand accent walls, and potted plants can spruce up dead corners to provide an added sense of comfort,” said Weltman.

Weltman said that there is no ‘best’ way to lay out a gift shop, but the layout should be guided by two components: the retailer’s goals, and the confines of the space. For example, a higher end gift shop might focus on aesthetics, while an ‘exit through the gift shop’ type place should focus on traffic flow so customers can walk past as many pieces as possible. “Think of this as an investment in your business and hire a professional to design and plan your store – it’ll pay dividends in the end. The single most important thing is how the store functions, and that starts with proper space planning. If the store is not properly laid out, you could be missing out on sales and not even know it,” he said. But even small changes can help, and you don’t have to break the bank. Things like a fresh coat of paint, better lighting and new floors can help refresh a look, said Weltman. “It’s hard to change out the layout, but we certainly change the design frequently. We need to move things around to change the energy in the store. A large percentage of our customers are repeat customers, so we have to make things look different constantly even if the items are not new. We make them look new by changing their position,” said Leslie Gera, owner of Mother Earth Gallery in New Milford, CT, a crystals and minerals shop housed in an 1800s building that also carries candles, sterling silver gemstone jewelry, and more. “The layout of the store is designed to draw customers to particular areas (candles, singing bowls, jewelry, etc.) but keeping the areas as open as possible. We have beautiful glass cube shelves when you first walk into the shop and, for whatever reason, everyone tends to turn right upon entering,” she added. Weltman said that it’s expensive to

This is especially true if your store attracts Gen Z’ers, as they are the ones most likely to use Instagram when they are out shopping, even more than Millennials. To illustrate, Rossman has a wall of cards in her store, and within minutes of someone Instagramming that, she picked up 140 additional followers.

Advice Staying within a budget is critical when designing your store. Your shop does not have to have every bell and whistle to make an impact. Rossman plans to do more workshops in the store just after the holidays, including writers’ workshops, cocktail parties, collage workshops, and journaling. The purpose is mainly “…to generate a different kind of audience who isn’t shopping, but who might want to take a class.” “Everyone is basically competing with Amazon nowadays, so retailers are having to find new ways to engage and compel customers with in-store experiences,” said Weltman. For Sautter, the most important element is the customer journey. She said to ask yourself, “What is it you want the customer to take away, and how can you bring them back? Business&Marketing The ABCs of Marketing to Generations X, Y & Z By Megy Karydes
We’d be hard-pressed to find customers who don’t have their smartphone within arms-reach at any given time, whether they’re part of the Baby Boomer or Gen Z generation. While marketing must embrace digital, how we market to each generation isn’t one size fits all and the reason is a reflection of how each generation grew up with technology. Knowing whom you’re trying to reach and their preferences with using digital devices can help craft a marketing plan that will resonate with each group and drive sales.
Baby Boomers This older generation still appreciates customer service and loyalty. Unlike younger generations that don’t mind hopping around and have the need for constant entertainment among their shopping channels, Baby Boomers tend to prefer well-established shopping experiences, whether that’s in-store or online. Many in this generation were introduced to online shopping experiences through grocery shopping since theirs were among the first families in which both parents worked outside the home and, therefore, home time was a premium. Creating positive shopping experiences and rewarding loyalty will drive sales with this group that values long-term relationships.
Generation X Influencers rarely influence Generation X and while they enjoy using their smartphones, they prefer to do most of their online shopping using a desktop or laptop rather than their phone. While their younger counterparts (and their children) don’t have a problem living in a cashless society and embrace cashier-less checkpoints, this group tends to prefer using their credit cards or other payment tools such as gift cards. Similar to their Baby Boomer parents, Generation X usually knows what they like and also appreciates good service. Retailers would do well to create in-shop and online experiences that feature products this generation loves, but also to not discount the importance that good service can have with this audience. While they don’t care for influencers in the modern sense, word-of-mouth among their peers is particularly influential.
Millennials (also known as Generation Y) Millennials grew up with desktops and then tablets, so digital devices have been part of their daily lives. Interestingly, they’re the first generation to not really see privacy as a concern and are willing to share data, including their location, for example, if it means they’ll score a perk, such as a discount. Price tends to be a factor for this group and it often serves as the greatest influence on their purchasing decision, even over things like

quality or brand. With the ease of online shopping sites, comparison shopping is easier than ever, and they’ll take the time to do it if it means getting a better deal as a result. This group started setting new trends in retail shopping. Like influencers not influencing Gen X, advertisements don’t work as well with Millennials since they just don’t believe them. Authenticity matters, so consider creating content that resonates with them. Using social media to engage and start a conversation can go a long way, rather than pushing Facebook ads. Involve them. Ask them about products and services, what they value and what they’d like to see. Show them that you care about their opinions. They follow in the footsteps of their parents who began demanding transparency. They want to know where things are made and how they’re made so to the extent that you can share that information, the better off you’ll be reaching this group. Also, they want to be more socially responsible, so if your business supports a cause, let them know. Finally, since they’re comfortable sharing their data, go ahead and collect information you feel might strengthen their buying experience, whether it’s their birthday date to offer them a discount or keeping a database of their purchasing history so you can better customize or recommend products or services.
Generation Z Gen Z has grown up “always on” since smartphones and other portable connected devices have been a staple in their lives. As a result, these digital natives are technologically-savvy and expect others, including businesses, to be as well. While Generation Xers may remember having to wake up early to watch cartoons on Saturday mornings because that was the only window they could watch them, Generation Z is accustomed to on-demand entertainment and videos. Therefore, those YouTube and online video ads greatly influence their engagement with brands. They’re also masters at multitasking on their mobile devices, effortlessly moving from socializing with friends to playing games to listening to music. If your business is online, you only have seconds to capture their attention before they tap onto the next activity. This generation heavily relies on emojis and visuals, so consider crafting content that is interactive, fun, and engaging and incorporates a lot of visuals. Body-Mind-Spirit What is in the Name? By Karen Stuth
We all tend at times to employ labels to help identify or categorize various thought systems and ideologies. We use them as a way to sort and classify the enormous amount of information we are presented with each day. That is especially true when talking about the Body-MindSpirit industry, sometimes misdescribed or misnamed as the New Age movement, the New Thought movement, or even the Conscious Living movement. Even those who work primarily in the BMS arena often have difficulty defining or articulating the category industry themselves. Is the ‘body-mind-spirit’ simply the balanced connection between those three things as a way to achieve wholeness and wellness? Is it a substantive path to spirituality? Or the core of non-dualistic spirituality at its best? After all, many types of businesses are using both the term ‘body-mind-spirit’ or ‘mind-body-soul-spirit’ to promote their offerings, including day spas and wellness centers of all types. The BMS industry is considered as a subsegment of the $10.6 billion U.S. personal development industry, loosely described as body-mind-spirit products: CDs, books, tapes, seminars and Yoga, fitness, weight loss, and spiritual products and services. How about the term ‘New Age movement?’ Britannica defines it as a “movement that spread through the occult and metaphysical religious communities in the 1970s and '80s. It looked forward to a ‘New Age’ of love and light and offered a foretaste of the coming era through personal transformation and healing.” According to the same source, the movement united a body of diverse believers with two simple ideas. First, it predicted that a New Age of heightened spiritual consciousness and international peace would arrive and bring an end to racism, poverty, sickness, hunger, and war. This social transformation would result from the massive spiritual awakening of the general population during the next generation. Second, individuals could obtain a foretaste of the New Age through their own spiritual transformation. This movement is perhaps more fundamentally pointed toward spiritual growth than body-mindspirit, but it also seems clear that it is the predecessor, or door opener, for today’s industry-based ideologies.
Another term frequently used in the industry is the Mindfulness movement. Most often attributed to Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD – internationally known for his work as a scientist, writer, and mindfulness meditation teacher, and the originator of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. To convince the mainstream public to meditate, he raised interest in mindfulness practices as an outlet or antidote to the stress of modern life. He did so using common, everyday vocabulary that bore no relationship to the words and terminology often associated with New Age. I have often heard mindfulness described as “the heart of Buddhist meditation” and Kabat-Zinn’s approach is to offer training in mindfulness in ways that were implicitly anchored in Buddhist teachings, but offered in a universal and mainstream Western framework. The Mindfulness movement has caught the attention of many people of all ages and different religious around the world, and it has substantially increased interest in the practice of meditation, and for many, has provided a path to inner calm they did not find through other spiritual or life-enhancing technologies. Some consider it trendy, but it is a movement that has re-packaged the practice of meditation to appeal to those who might be turned off by language that brought forward associations with Eastern philosophy. A few other categories are growing nowadays and merging in the market, opening doors for a broader category – Conscious Living. Like the name itself suggests – a lifestyle and thought system that seeks to balance the three primary aspects (body, mind, spirit) in a lifestyle decision in which one chooses a life imbued with compassion, awareness, mindfulness, and presence. People dedicated to a conscious lifestyle often make a concerted effort to reflect their values through living practices that do not harm themselves, others, or the Earth. They commit to living in awareness of and to actively seek solutions for conscious crises that may include lack of sustainability, racism, bigotry, human trafficking, animal testing, and animal abuse, genetically modified foods, global warming, and many other similar issues. Many use the term ‘conscious living’ interchangeably with the body-mind-spirit.

The movement embraces ways to live in harmony with life around them and according to their values. Members of the movement are often politically active and try to live their values daily. Conscious Living practitioners embrace a strong sense of social responsibility, which is a core distinguishing feature of the Conscious Living philosophy.
What Matters
“
Where are we then? We have these different beliefs, some very closely aligned, few with different labels to describe them. There are no fences around any of these philosophies and we often find a blending of beliefs as many work to craft a lifestyle and philosophy that provides them personal meaning. What does it mean for those engaged in a business that serves the needs of one or more of these philosophies? Does the name or label matter? As the current president of the Coalition of Visionary Resources, the trade association for the BodyMind-Spirit marketplace, I deal with these questions on a daily basis, as both members and prospective members reach out to inquire about what they should name their businesses, how they should describe their core offering, or even if their businesses qualify for membership. These conversations are often quite fascinating and bring me daily awareness of how alive the issues of labeling are in today’s world. First and foremost, titles and products designed for any or all of these thought systems are not the exclusive property of body-mindspirit/conscious living/New Age/mindfulness businesses, and more and more, are mainstreaming into other types of retail businesses. Books on mindfulness may be found in airport bookstores as along with well-known titles such as The Secret and works by well-known BMS authors such as Wayne Dyer. Courses about mindfulness and meditation are prolific and are offered or sponsored by such disparate groups as AARP and Montessori schools. Many spas readily advertise their services using terminology strongly evocative of BMS philosophies. I view this as an incredibly good thing, not only for the individual authors, publishing houses, musicians, jewelry makers or product manufacturers, but also for the growing awareness and health of our industry. This does not detract from the businesses of core BMS, New Age, Conscious Living, or Mindfulness retailers. In fact, it highlights the fact that their retail locations are centers for these types of products and information, providing a fuller, more complete offering of what other mainstream retailers might offer in an abbreviated fashion. Many of our COVR retailermembers report their clientele is changing from what many might describe as ‘hippies’ and ‘New-Agers’ to lawyers, doctors, persons from mainstream religions, older and younger customers, and newly-minted ‘seekers.’
To me, the label doesn’t matter. What is important is for purveyors of products meant for any or all of the four categories above to continue to present and provide the books, art, music, jewelry, information, tools, and technologies that consumers can select from as they navigate their paths. They must market their businesses so that message is well-presented to the buying public. A good friend, years ago, picked up a copy of The Secret at Costco, of all places, and is now a certified Reiki master, yoga, and meditation teacher. Her appetite was whetted by reading The Secret. She immediately sought out stores in her area where the proprietor and staff could point her to ‘what-next’ titles and tools that served her growing awareness and interest. But even if labels truly don’t matter, should our industry overall seek to adapt a common label or nomenclature to help consumers more easily find us? Would a common search term on the internet better serve our industry? Should store owners adapt a particular phrase, such as New Age, Body Mind Spirit, Mindfulness, or Conscious Living as a part of their business name? I believe what is more important is for every retailer, vendor, and product developer to assure they are meeting the needs of the four cornerstone philosophies discussed above. A common terminology or industry name might help us, but might also disinterest those who don’t understand the breadth, depth, and the overlap of those four foundational areas. It is as important that we don’t pigeonhole our customers’ needs and that we don’t also limit our offerings to only serve a narrow portion of the buying public. Because the four philosophies above are so closely aligned, committed retailers should have a relatively easy time in selecting products and services with a wide, but meaningful, appeal. If you are a retailer, vendor, or product developer, take a hard look at your product line or inventory and ask yourself if you have offerings of interest to each of the four schools of thought that underpin our industry as a whole. It is the extent of your offering that will separate you from other stores and businesses. It is the substance of your offering that matters more than how you label it. This, along with the knowledge and expertise you offer your customers, is what truly differentiates your business and serves the needs of your current and future customers.

The Re-Commerce Business By Jacki Smith The cake was cut (one vegan and one traditional), the presents unwrapped, and the 30 women attending the baby shower had segregated into their generational and cultural subgroups. Thirty women laughing and talking where a half-an-hour before, it was polite crickets as we tried to interact with each other during the party games. My brain was filled with marketing statistics, generational studies, and boomer jokes that my Gen Z daughter showed me that morning. I was in the perfect microcosm to watch in real time how the generations consume products. I was the literal fly on the wall, and it fascinated me to no end. I could prove all the theories of generational buying habits just by reviewing the pile of presents and who they came from. Boomers wrapped the presents in boxes because they got the big items needed for a new baby. Most of them had a story about how raising babies is easy and what the salesperson said about the item they purchased. They brought the meatballs, spinach salad, and pinwheel sandwiches to the shower.

Gen-Z had gift bags filled with the staples of what is needed, useful and effective for when the baby comes home. They talked about where to get the best deal online for the highest rated products to save the mom precious shopping time. Each one threw in at least one nostalgic book or toy from their childhood. They brought the cheese and crackers, fruit trays, Costco cake and drinks to the party. Millennials brought the organic, bamboo, environmental items in reusable baskets and boxes. They talked about how each item was ethically sourced and its impact upon the baby’s health. They also brought the vegan offerings; cake, moussaka, vegetable curry and cashew butter. Gen-Z were few to attend, but they brought the upcycled, repurposed and hand painted items. They didn’t bring food, but did a lot of the setup and clean up. There was nothing drastically different or discordant among the generations, just a culmination of different life experiences and influences. These differing needs, generation to generation, showed me that in the end we all want the same thing – to feel connected, appreciated, empowered and comfortable in our own skin. To me this begs the question, why are the generations at odds with each other if we all want the same thing? The answer is because the way we find our comfort can be worlds apart. If, as retailers, we can recognize what each generation is telling us what they need, we can reach more buyers in a way that is comfortable to them. We can appreciate the younger shopper and turn them into an influencer. We can honor the needs of the order generation and still be cutting edge. We can build community right where we are and not have to feel threatened by the lightspeed that markets and technology are changing.
DISRUPTION IN THE MARKET I am now officially the trend watcher at our store. It is a good 25 percent of my job to take notice of what is going on in the many markets we are in. What is selling, what is changing and most importantly, what is disrupting. These big shakeups can change markets in unrecognizable ways in less than a year. Think about the video store rentals when Netflix disrupted their market. Uber and Airbnb are more

disruptors changing the way we live. If you look at each major disruption, it was a product of the incoming generation. Gen-Xers brought the new technology and need for convenience through e-commerce. Millennials took down even more barriers to controlling our own world with the sharing commerce of Uber and Airbnb. I am watching and strategizing how to manage the next disruption I see coming right now from the Gen-Z crowd – recommerce. Recommerce, also known as reverse commerce, is a term coined by George Colony in a 2005 New York Times interview. Colony is the chief executive of Forrester
game that eBay and Amazon started. Yes, Amazon! Don’t forget that they are still the largest clearing house of used books. What these new companies are doing is making it easier for the consumer to sell items and it is giving them thousands of new items daily and even hourly to pick from.
ENVIRONMENTAL FASHION Being sustainably conscious is not just about bamboo clothing and organic cottons. The two younger generations are demanding more than disposable fashion that ends up in the landfill. This is not just a need to be

Research who described recommerce as the business models centered on the purchase and resale of used goods by companies. This initial model was focused on the sale of outdated tech from first world countries to emerging nations. But, recommerce is much more than that. It’s really the baby of e-commerce and sharing commerce! This is where the informal industry of flea markets, secondhand shops and garage sales met up with the power of the mobile phone to make buying used merchandise easy and immediate. The disruption started with eBay when it came onto the scene, yet in 2020, recommerce is much bigger than what eBay ever thought it could be. Today’s recommerce also contains the ideals of environmental sustainability, influence marketing and the freedom to create additional income. Millennials and Gen-Z buyers are growing this market to an expected $51 billion by 2023 and the rest of the generations are jumping into the trend. Sites like Poshmark, ThreadUp, The RealReal, Grailed, Depop, Tradesy along with many other sites are shaking up the
frugal with your fashion, Millennials and Gen-Z are concerned about the impact of fast fashion on global sustainability. From how it is made to how it is recycled is all on their radar. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a U.K. charity that promotes a circular economy and is a leader in recommerce thinking, states that an equivalent of a garbage truck of textiles is sent to a landfill or incinerated every second. After oil, fashion is the most polluting industry. According to ThreadUp, fashion will drain a quarter of the world’s carbon budget by 2050. Do you know 26 billion pounds of textiles are dumped into global landfill each year? A single T-shirt takes 700 gallons of water to produce. ThreadUp has even created a movement called #chooseused to bring awareness to this environmental impact. This environmental values-based need for Millennials is so strong that new leadership in companies like Eileen Fisher, Patagonia, and REI have started their own used or returned goods online resale shops. They realized that people will resell their
brand to each other whether they want them to or not. By creating their own online resale shops, they have some control of the quality that gets recommerced. Along with these big brands, more local-based resale shops specialize in fixing, refreshing and even upcycling clothes into new items. Renewalworkshop.com is one that is big hit locally and nationally, for instance. This is something that can easily be a second income and drive local economy in a new way.
CREATING NEW CASH FLOW LetGo, OfferUp, Gone and Facebook Marketplace are re-commerce apps that let you list what you want to clear out of your life in a snap. Some smart home based entrepreneurs are turning those services into positive cash flow. From fashion to lawnmowers, we are all being more frugal and environmentally conscious while profiting on a quick side hustle. I watch my 22-year-old and her friends trade clothes and sell what they don’t
need in the easiest way possible. One of her enterprising friends scours Goodwill, Value World, and Salvation Army stores for items she knows will sell on Poshmark. Need a new camera? Source your closet
look for finds at flea markets or garage sales to sell online. Even the Boomers are taking advantage of this when they downsize or when their parents pass. There is a new wave of vintage dishes, curios, coats, and

When I tried to sell what was downsized from my parents’ home on eBay, it was a flop until I started using tips and tricks to market this to the millions of people on the site. I had to get noticed and it was a marketing strategy. Just like eBay and Etsy, you have to work your recommerce app to get noticed. Not everything sells and when it sells, it will be at the price the buyer is willing to pay. One person’s trash is often another person’s treasure, just make sure it’s the like new, vintage and/or well cared for stuff.

Boomers I am going to ensure that my customer service is topnotch and that we create a relaxing and rewarding personal experience.
Gen X I am going to make sure my website is easy to use and shows the value of my products. They respond to clear marketing messages that help resolve the pain of the day.
Millennials I know they read the reviews first and I will make sure I have influence marketing in place to give them confidence in my brand. My website must be optimized for mobile devices and have a way to reward brand loyalty.
Gen Z I know that my brand is authenticated by community and rewarded when I am socially and environmentally conscious. Social media and influence marketing is the way they find me and in turn, when loyal, they will promote me to the masses themselves. I must give them value and even a return on investment when they buy my products. In the end, my business goal is to ensure all my customer feel connected, appreciated, empowered and comfortable with my products no matter how they came about them. The store’s business is grounded in its history of custom herbal tea blends that promote healing from within, and it is further committed to raising the vibration of its community through self-care practices, meditation, holistic health, and tools for modern mystics and varied spiritual practices. It places high value on local sourcing and sustainability. However, if a local supplier cannot be sourced, the store tries to find a socially and environmentally responsible alternative. In this little shop on the corner, it is easy to find unique gifts, a candle that makes you laugh, local honey and teas, as well as your next tarot deck or crystal. The philosophy is simple – to inspire, offer learning opportunities and answer questions, while not taking themselves too seriously… “inviting humankind to be both ‘human’ and ‘kind.’” Learn more details in our interview with Kae Apothecary below. Why did you decide the open the store? After beating cancer in her early twenties and living with celiac disease since, Andrea “Kae” Gorsh looked to more natural alternatives in her own self-care routines and health practices. Her back to basics approach lead to countless hours of learning and her own line of Kae Apothecary items – which have since expanded into so much more, including a retail space opened in May 2016. The space was housed in a former artist’s studio that was only about 400 square feet and only accessible from an alley down the hill from the local Main Street. It became tough to fit 25 people among products in that space on Saturday mornings for community meditation! As people found the space and created an incredible community within, Kae quickly realized that it was time for something larger. So, the shop moved to Main Street in January 2019. We just completed a full year in the new space, and it was a true learning experience – filling us with so much gratitude for this growth. The new space’s main level is over 1,700 square feet and has so much history, as the building was the original hotel in town in the late 1800s. It has a second floor that allows the upstairs space to house Reiki and healing practitioners, a quaint yoga and meditation gathering space, and even a small kitchen for employees to use. How would you describe your store type? We’re proud to be a small, woman-owned business in a very supportive town. It intentionally touches on conscious living on multiple levels in order to make it accessible for a broad audience. Our store is a bright addition to the corner of uptown, allowing passersby to often see an encouraging sign in the window and be enveloped by a welcoming atmosphere once they walk in. They find a variety of options for general health and wellness, but also encouraging opportunities to expand their spiritual practices or support their emotional health. How would you describe your group of consumers?
We reside in a pretty rad town! Our “community wall” near the tea bar is always full of posters for upcoming musicians, arts festivals, yoga retreats, fundraisers, and more. How would you best describe your store layout? Do you often move products around the store to create a better flow and encourage purchase behavior? We move things around ALL the time! One of my employees has a background in psychology and loves making things look more aesthetically pleasing, so we have fun moving things on a regular basis to see what customers will gravitate towards. We’re open seven days a week, so we move things around while we’re open. We always wait for quieter days and moments to do so. It never fails! The Universe inevitably sends us a bunch of people walking through the door just as the shop is in the chaos of reorganization. It’s often very inviting for customers, as we all laugh together, and they seem to look at the piles we’ve made everywhere. Otherwise, we’ve intentionally left the space feeling open and airy, with lower shelves in the middle for greater sight lines through to the back of the space. As patrons walk in, they see a long herbal tea creation table with shelves of herbs behind and triangle shelves to the opposite side. Beyond that is our tea bar space, a long farm table for workshops and gatherings, as well as a comfy couch and chairs for tea drinkers to enjoy or customers to review books prior to purchase. Small encouraging notes are found throughout on the walls and shelves, and we’ve kept the general color scheme neutral with bright white walls, black accents (like the self-proclaimed ‘longest chalkboard in Iowa’), warm wood tones, and some hints of sparkle. It is a space we continually feel at home in and that feeling was quite intentional. As a store owner can you share with us a little bit of your weekly routine?

The most consistent part of my weekly routine is change. Between volunteer organization meetings, hours working at the shop, and family obligations, there is never a full week in my planner that isn’t scribbled all over with changes. But, that’s just how I like it. I love being able to make my own schedule, to change it as needed for myself and others. This is such
an important part of work-life balance. Keeping up with commitments, but also knowing where your boundaries lie and when to ask for something in your weekly schedule to move and shift in order for you to be at your best self for each and every task. Over the last year, I have learned to let go of the anxiousness for being “prepared” and trust that I am always prepared and focus on being present for whatever is penciled in for my days. How do you promote your brand awareness and products to grow profit margin? We spend a lot of energy on working within our community and we’re always glad to hear when a friend has told someone to visit us. Andrea has joined the local community development group and volunteers on many boards and organizations in town. We always enjoy hosting groups around the large meeting table space, as well. In addition, our social media platform focus on Facebook (/kaeapothecary) and Instagram (@kaeapothecary) has been incredibly beneficial. We find that sharing behind-the-scenes moments and new products on the ‘stories’ features of both are amusing, engaging, and our customers love responding to them. We’ve also engaged in local news and publications as contributors (which allows us to position ourselves as experts and is often inexpensive or free publicity), in addition to some small advertising. When you own a business, it seems that advertisers come from all angles. So, we try to weigh our options of return on investment in any print publications with information on who the audience is, the size/location of our ad for the money, and then we reevaluate often. Do you work with consignment products? Sometimes, but only on a case-by-case basis and only with local artisans. Do you usually go to trade shows to look for new products for your store or do you frequently search for new products online? Which trade show would you say is a “must go”?
The new shop location has allowed us the opportunity to expand in many areas. We enjoyed a trip to Colorado for INATS last summer for the first time and it was a great experience. This was particularly helpful in selecting crystal providers, publishers, and other unique options because we wanted to connect with the people behind those products as we expanded. However, our most frequented place for sourcing new products is Faire – a platform for connecting retailers with many unique products and other small businesses. We appreciate their wholesale costs, free returns on products that do not sell within a certain timeframe, and zip code protection. We love an excuse to travel, but this allows us a great deal of diversity and flexibility in our product offerings while managing things from the shop.
Do you work exclusively with local artists and made in USA products or do you carry imported products including Fair Trade? We are very aware of who creates the products we carry and especially love supporting local, Fair Trade, and other small business wares. In fact, the local honey we carry has been sourced from a farm less than one mile away from our shop. Our own line of Kae Apothecary self-care products and herbal teas are also created in-house in small batches and we carefully source those ingredients. Our most current concern as we continue stocking new products is to find items that have the least amount of packaging or are packaged in compostable/ recyclable materials.

When choosing new products for the shop, what is your selection criteria? We love finding well-sourced, unique and artisanal items. Packaging of the products is important – as we want the branding to fit well into our space and encourage customers to pick up the products off the shelves. We love when someone finds something that serves their needs. It also must fit the idea that it will improve someone’s life in some way. Another hefty factor is knowing who is behind the new products. When sourcing new items, we seek out the vendor’s websites or reach out to learn who is making the products. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT! I can’t tell you how many times one of our customers has asked, “Do you know anything about where this came from or who made it?” and it is really satisfying to be able to say “yes” and share the story of the maker. Any plans to expand your business to attract a broader audience? Our main goal in the new year is to expand our herbal tea blend wholesale program, as we already have so many great blends that are well-known by return customers – including Immunity Boost, Inf lammation Blend, Bedtime Brew, Energy Boost, Detox, Kids’ Calming, Love Potion, and more…. 30 more to be exact. At the same time, we’ve already begun selling more items through social media and online. This will be expanded as the year continues. An off-shoot of Kae Apot hecar y is our new website www.IowaDoesntSuck.com where we’ll offer some of our more ‘irreverent’ (though geared toward humor) types of products – t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other wares with our Iowa Doesn’t Suck branding, as well as our “Impeach-Tea” (a tea blend that’s super tasty and going to be “HUGE”). It began as a t-shirt inspired by an outof-state customer who boldly exclaimed the sentiment as she entered our store one day and the exclamations of agreement have continued since. This will be an exciting year!
a head cold, a divorce, or a full-on existential crisis. Our advice to other business owners would be to surround yourself with other business owners that you can talk to. If you’re not sure where to start, you can find your town’s Chamber of Commerce and ask, or even ask a neighbor store owner out for a cup of coffee or tea. It may be as simple as committing to shopping more local in your own life – thereby leading by example, getting to know other businesses in your community. While you visit, invite people into your space and get to know them. Eventually, you’ll create a space where you can talk more openly about things that you’re not sure how to tackle. Andrea did this a few years ago and it has turned into an annual summer Shop Hop that is organized between all the metaphysical shops of Eastern Iowa! In addition, do all you can to take care of yourself. You can’t spread love and light without sending yourself some. Andrea schedules regular facial and massage services with a spa and fellow conscious-living store a few doors down from our storefront. She’s able to connect with other local retailers, support their business, and also support her own health.
What advice would you give retailers to help grow their businesses? Running a business is hard and it comes with a rollercoaster of emotions, a neverending list of tasks, work-life balance, and a fair amount of fears. The pay-off is that you get to work for yourself doing something you love and the goal is to work hard, but have it never feel like “work.” We especially love that what we do might help support someone else’s journey through whatever they’re going through too – whether that’s

Also – remember to eat and drink water, delegate tasks to your employees (or consider getting an employee if you’re feeling overwhelmed), outsource whenever possible – like having your accountant help with bookkeeping. When offering health and wellness to others, we must always be sure we are taking our own advice and filling our own cup every day!

Do you ever feel tired, sick and uninspired, or find yourself becoming angry and feeling stressed out without knowing the particular reason for feeling this way? If so, perhaps it is time for a metaphysical cleanse. Much like using soap for cleaning the body, a metaphysical cleanse employs various methods to clean your subtle body and aura of negative energy that may be preventing the free flow of subtle energy that you need to feel vibrant and to be healthy. When you are cleansed in this way, the subtle energy that flows through all of your subtle nerve channels and chakras will become unclogged, and instead, flow freely without any impediment. Simply put, when your subtle energy flows freely along the subtle nerve channels and your chakras are balanced and open, you will soon recover your original vibrancy and joy of living. You can also offer your body, mind, heart and soul, for example, to the Higher Spirit to be cleared of all darkness and instead filled with light. You can use prayer to maintain a constant state of thankfulness so that your focus is only on the good rather than the problems and circumstances that bring pain and negativity. When praying in this way, you will find that no matter what your circumstances, there is always something to be thankful for. A constant state of thankfulness and gratitude will cause all negativity to flee from you and you will constantly feel cleansed and renewed in every single moment. 1. Let Go Christoph Berghorn Capitol Sound Records I www.christoph-berghorn.com/ musician
It is said of Denver, Colorado, “If you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes!” Christoph Berghorn’s album is kind of like that. With 22 tracks in all, there is likely to be something for everyone. The overriding influence is new age music, but other elements can pop up on certain songs, e.g. jazz, world, et al. Guest artists contribute on cello, alto and soprano sax, flugelhorn, and percussion, while Berghorn handles the keyboards. Despite the mix of styles, there is a cohesiveness, which I attribute to the artist’s way with melody, tempo, and rhythm as well his choices for keyboard sounds which are classic new age!
2. While It Lasts Geoff Hall Hall Studios I www.geoffhallcomposer.com
Geoff Hall does not list the instruments featured on While It Lasts, but I hazard a guess it’s acoustic guitar and keyboards (for accompanying textures, e.g. orchestral strings, as well some sampled other instruments, e.g. the flute on “Something on the Wind”). His fingerstyle guitar playing is fantastic, which is immediately apparent on the opening uptempo piece, “Arrival.” The album’s nine songs encompass a wide range of emotional moods and musical styles but no matter which direction a piece heads in, Hall displays uncommon deftness on the guitar and his composing virtuosity is impressive to say the least.

It seems that Peter Kater never runs out of inspiration for new music. With each release over the years, he effortlessly expands his color palette. On Wings, he pares down to just piano with subtle (yet occasionally lush) string orchestrations, deftly applied

to underscore the emotional evocation of the track on which they are featured. What stands out the most though, as one would expect, is Kater’s virtuosity on the ivories. Whether soaring through dramatic melodies or taking a softer, more tender approach, he demonstrates why he has racked up seemingly countless accolades since bursting on the scene in 1982. No doubt Wings will enthrall his legion of followers and, perhaps, increase the “flock” with new-found fans.
4. Woodlands Rudy Adrian Spotted Peccary I www.spottedpeccary.com
New Zealand-based synthesizer artist Rudy Adrian has been crafting superb ambient soundscapes since 1990, with 12 studio and four live albums so far. Woodlands is his 13th studio effort and, like all of his work, it showcases his abundant talent at layering multiple synthesizer tones, effects, and melodic elements in stunning fashion. Per the artist’s liner notes, “Woodlands is a reflection of the pleasures of walking through the leafy glades, sheltered under the spreading boughs of forest trees.” So, you can correctly assume that the 13 tracks are based on flowing melodies, sometimes warm, sometimes haunting, but always sublimely crafted with care and extreme attention to detail.

Flow, the contemporary instrumental supergroup (Fiona Joy on piano and vocals, Lawrence Blatt on guitars/ukulele/bass, Jeff Oster on flugelhorn and trumpet, and Will Ackerman on guitar) return for a second go round and, as impossible as it may seem, they have eclipsed the excellence of their debut album. Promise is chockful of superb musicianship in the service of equally excellent compositions. Flow are a true ensemble with no showboating exhibited by the four principal artists, instead showing a seamless symbiosis of their individual artistry. Tunes vary from sedate and quiet to gently rollicking and the overall vibe is relaxing to the max.

In her own quiet way, pianist Lynn Tredeau is cementing her place with the best solo piano artists recording today. All the Pieces is her sixth album and, to my ears, it is both her best and her most personal/ intimate release so far. Tredeau has always shown an affinity for playing with a subtlety and utmost control of tone and nuance, and this album showcases those talents from beginning to end. Overall, the mood on the album is reflective and introspective, wavering between warm and somber, but not quite delving into melancholy. It would be a perfect soundtrack for daydreaming on grey, rainy days or nights in front of a glowing fire.
7. The Space Between Breaths Sherry Finzer & Will Clipman Heart Dance Records I www.heartdancerecords.com
When you bring together two of the most talented and accomplished artists on their respective instruments, you should rightfully expect something dazzling to come of it. The Space Between Breaths unites
flutist Finzer and drummer/percussionist Clipman and, my goodness, even with the lofty expectations I held, I was still impressed with the end result of their collaboration. Space limitation prevents me from listing the variety of flutes (Finzer) and drums/percussion (Clipman) performing on the album, but it’s a formidable list. By turns primal, sensual, haunting, somber, and even playful, The Space Between Breaths presents two artists at the pinnacle of their talent.
8. Revealed Gina Leneé Self-released I www.ginalenee.com
Revealed is pianist Gina Leneé›s second album helmed by Grammywinner Will Ackerman and ace studio engineer Tom Eaton. It “reveals” that her first effort with them (2017’s Red Diamonds) was a musical precursor of more greatness to come. Revealed’s songs are deeper, more intimate, and richer with nuance. The mood is more introspective than Red Diamonds, showcasing Leneé›s extremely deft touch on the ivories. Supporting her, as one would expect from an album recorded at Imaginary Road Studios, are these talented guest artists: flugelhorn maestro Jeff Oster, cellist Eugene Friesen, violinist Charlie Bisharat, sax player Premik Russell Tubbs, and percussionist Jeff Haynes, as well as Ackerman (guitar) and Eaton (electric bass).

Obviously trying to sum up the music on One World would require a lot more space than I have here, but regardless of either the geographic region Stribling focuses on or the culture he draws inspiration from, the results are impressive. Add in flawless mastering from Tom Eaton (Imaginary Road Studios), and you have the makings of a globehopping musical extravaganza!

Fifteen minutes of barefoot time on the grass or dirt (no concrete) is electric nutrition to the body. It can rebalance the system in such powerful ways that you won’t recognize the value in this until you try it for yourself. My suggestion is two small breaks just to get outside and breathe fresh air and clear your head. Those breaks don’t need to be more than 5-10 minutes. Lunch break is where the 15 minute Earthing can work double duty for your body and your mind. Eat lunch outside, without shoes. You are not taking away any additional time here, you are simply upping the ante on your mental health while nourishing your body. It’s getting cold so barefoot doesn’t seem quite as appealing, but please do at least a little bit and pair it with some hot soup, or tea to help balance.

Stop and take breaks to stretch and breathe to alter the focus. An easy guide is to roll everything five full times. Inhale for one direction and exhale for the opposite direction (that makes one full time for counting). Roll the neck, shoulders, hips, knees and then point and flex the feet. Follow that up with a whole body shake out and get all the heaviness out of your body. Shake your whole body. Finish by lifting the arms up with an inhale, lowering the arms down with an exhale and repeat the movement of the arms and breathe five times. You will sit back down with a clarity in your body and in your mental behavior – guaranteed. Do this every hour or every other hour for best results.

Compartmentalize your to-do list. Start with the things that have to get done today and only focus on those things. Don’t overwhelm yourself unnecessarily by adding too much

pressure on yourself with things that don’t have to be finished right this minute. Then complete each of those tasks. Once you’ve completed all those tasks, then you can tackle the other things that don’t have to be completed today.

Hydrating properly can do so much for your mental health. Being dehydrated is one of the leading causes for the brain fog that we’ve all experienced. Put down the sodas and coffees and choose drinks that are more helpful to the mental requirements of being productive. Water, of course, is the preferred choice. Things like tea: yerba mate tea helps with focus and attention while chamomile helps to calm the mind. Keep a few options close by to change it up according to what you might need at any given time. Be sure to keep healthy snacks nearby and curb the drops in blood sugar by not staying nourished. Keep nuts and seeds and things of that nature nearby so you can grab them and keep the blood sugar stable. Try to minimize the sugars and artificial foods while work snacking. Keep healthy at work and save those cheats for when you’re actually out having fun and able to fully enjoy the more decadent choices.

Lastly, if I’m being true to what I write about body-mind-spirit wellness, I offer this: take stock in yourself and your workplace and do it often. Be sure that you are in the right place, and in the best department within the right place. You might love the company, but wish you could be doing something else within the company. Get clear with what you want and how you can best serve both yourself and the company in a complementary way. Don’t be afraid to have those conversations with the ones who can help you and act accordingly. Don’t talk about it just to talk about it and please do not gripe about any work situations with coworkers. Make an appointment with a therapist if you need to for this. Keep your workspace clean in thoughts and behaviors. Prioritize your goals and do everything you can to keep yourself aligned with those goals.
