ARTICLE APPEARED IN CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER 10/09 Ex-councilman launches all-Spanish radio station Friday, October 09, 2009 Robert Smith Plain Dealer Columnist Nelson Cintron Jr., the first Hispanic member of the Cleveland City Council, may have lost his bid to return to the council, but he's not dwelling on his defeat in the September primary. He's living on the air in Painesville, operating a 24-hour Spanish radio station. Cintron launched WHWN FM/88.3 quietly this summer. The nonprofit station has since captured the attention of the large Mexican-American community in Lake and Ashtabula counties with a Mexican-music mix and some original shows and live broadcasts. "The community has really embraced us," said Cintron, who grew up in a broadcast family. His father, Nelson Cintron, was the first Hispanic radio broadcaster in the Cleveland area.
Also, the city of Cleveland would receive tax revenues in excess of $29.6 million annually. Local school districts would receive about $22.5 million.
Nelson Jr. said he applied for his radio license in 1997 and waited 10 years for approval. He incorporated Hispanic World Network and raised a tower on Johnnycake Ridge Road to launch the region's second all-Spanish radio station, following WNZN FM/89.1 FM in Lorain. In good weather, the 700-watt signal of WHWN reaches Cleveland's eastern suburbs.
Hoyas also noted that Issue 3 “would generate guaranteed tax revenues of 33 percent, or $651 million, to be distributed annually throughout the state to help grow our cities.”
Cintron said his aim is to train young Latinos for broadcast careers and that he's having a grand time doing it. "I had two goals in life: to become the first Hispanic member of City Council and to own a radio station," he said. "I achieved both. The Ohio Hispanic Chambers of Commerce — representing 5,000 Hispanic businesses throughout Ohio — earlier this month announced its support for Issue 3, which would authorize firstclass casinos in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and Toledo. Ohio Hispanic Chambers of Commerce president and chairman Gus A. Hoyas cited the economic impact and job creation Issue 3 would provide. “The casino initiative will create more than 34,000 construction and permanent jobs,” Hoyas said. “When enacted, that will mean that jobs will also be created for Hispanic businesses that can help to reshape the Ohio economy.”
“The initiative will keep our gaming dollars in-state, create thousands of good jobs and generate billions in tax revenues,” he said. The Ohio Hispanic Chambers of Commerce joins a growing list of organizations – including the Greater Cleveland Partnership, local labor unions and business owners — urging passage of State Issue 3. “This is clearly the right plan at the right time,” said Ohio Jobs and Growth Chairman Charlie Luken. “Not only will the proposal provide $651 million a year in tax revenues to be shared by all 88 counties, the eight largest cities and every school district in Ohio,” Luken said, “but it will clearly spark economic revitalization in our largest cities.” Primary backers of the proposal are: Penn National Gaming, Inc., a prominent operator of gaming facilities and horse racing tracks, including Raceway Park in Toledo; and Dan Gilbert, through his Rock Ventures partnership. Gilbert is majority owner of the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers and operator of Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, Cleveland Clinic Courts, the Lake Erie Monsters, Veritix and Fathead, as well as Chairman and Founder of Quicken Loans, which operates a 350-person Internet web center in downtown Cleveland. Gilbert, who began investing in Ohio in 2005, employs more than 2,500 people throughout the state.
