Mayor Frank G. Jackson, a proven leader, captures the major endorsements for re-election CLEVELAND (October 2009) — A who’s who of Cleveland and Cuyahoga leaders and organizations have endorsed Mayor Frank G. Jackson for re-election. They range from nearly all Cleveland’s local, state and federal officeholders to its major labor and political organizations. Heading the list of public officials are Cleveland’s two congressional representatives, Dennis J. Kucinich, D-10, and Marcia Fudge, D-11. ”Frank Jackson has worked hard to improve city services in hard times,” said Kucinich. “He has increased the number of police officers on the streets, making our city safer. “ Fudge similarly praised the mayor’s achievements in a tough economy, and added: “Mayor Jackson remains committed to improving the quality of life in all of Cleveland’s neighborhoods, and that’s why I ask voters to join me in supporting Mayor Jackson for re-election.” Jackson’s widespread support was shown by the variety of endorsements that include large, politically important organizations such as the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party and the North Shore AFL-CIO. Smaller, significant groups that favor Jackson include the Cuyahoga County Young Democrats, Cleveland Stonewall Democrats and CAMEO (Cleveland American Middle East Organization), and a variety of union locals that include the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 8, and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 93. Topping the list of general endorsements was The Plain Dealer, which glowingly praised Jackson for keeping the city’s budget balanced and taking on visionary efforts such as his summit on sustainability: “We endorse Mayor Jackson’s re-election not simply because he has been a surprisingly solid administrator …. Against a backdrop of almost constant economic stress, Jackson has understood that no big bets will succeed if the city doesn’t take care of everyday needs.” Jackson, Cleveland’s 56th mayor, is finishing his first four-year term as he campaigns for re-election. Since taking office, Jackson has maintained a balanced budget without layoffs or service cuts, reduced operating costs and increased strategic investment in Cleveland neighborhoods. He has positioned the city to weather the national economic downturn. Jackson’s most major endorsement was from the voters of Cleveland in the September 8 primary. He received 72% of the vote in a fiveperson field. For more information on his accomplishments and plans for his second term, go to www.mayorfrankjackson.com.
