The Holy Prophet Muhammadsa prophesied that the Promised Messiahas would be raised near a white minaret, east of Damascus. This prophecy was fulfilled with the advent of the Promised Messiahas from Qadian, India, a city directly east of Damascus.

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi was born to a noble family in Qadian, India.

From an early age he had a keen interest in religion and developed a love for the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa. He was also known for his honesty, friendliness and resolve.

Over time his knowledge and understanding of religion and its application to society deepened. Being a Muslim it was his firm belief that all religions were true at their source but with the passage of time had drifted away from their original teachings; he upheld the dignity of religion and demonstrated its relevance to everyone.

Hazrat Ahmadas had established himself as a respected writer and had written over 80 books. His writings have been translated into more than 60 languages and continue to inspire readers to this day. One of his greatest scholarly works was The Philosophy of the Teachings of Islam, prepared as a paper and read out at the Conference of Great Religions in 1896.

His earnest defence of religion was ultimately blessed when he started to receive direct revelation from Allah – a blessing that he continued for the rest of his life.

He also wrote a fascinating treatise in 1899 entitled Jesus in India, a book that uncovered remarkable evidence of Jesus’sas journey to India. In 1902 the Promised Messiahas initiated The Review of Religions which has covered a vast array of topics on religion, philosophy and contemporary issues of the day. It is the longest running English magazine in defence of Islam and the values it teaches.

His mission was to revitalise the truth that all religions held within them and to revive the teachings of Islam. It was through this that he would bring mankind together and establish everlasting peace.

From 1889 until the time of his demise in 1908 tens of thousands of people accepted him. This blessing has continued and will continue through his Khulafa (successors).

In 1889, under Divine Guidance, Hazrat Ahmadas founded the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community – a community that has since grown in its stature and strength and has remained active in conveying the message of Islam to the ends of the earth.

Currently under the fifth successor, we are seeing that the tide of acceptance is worldwide and that the message of Prophet Ahmadas has really reached the ends of the earth.

And I have not created the jinn and the men but that they may worship Me.

Abu Hurairahra narrates that the Holy Prophetsa conveyed that Allah The Almighty says: “Whoever moves towards Me by the span of an open hand, I move towards him by half an arm’s length. And whoever moves towards Me by half an arm’s length, I move towards him by the length of an arm. When he comes walking towards Me, I run to meet him”.

‘No one else is worthy of worship’ means that He is so perfect and His attributes and excellences are so high and exalted that if, out of all existence, a God were to be chosen on account of His perfect attributes or if one’s mind were to imagine the best and highest attributes, that God alone would be the most exalted and none else could be greater than Him. To associate anyone lower with Him and His worship would be utterly wrong.

Can Muslims Integrate Into Western Societies?

“It is a source of great pleasure to me that Ahmadi Muslims do not remain hidden away and isolated, but in fact, they endeavour to form relations with all segments of society and make efforts to integrate and interact with people from all walks of life. Certainly, such an attitude ought to be the hallmark of every true Ahmadi Muslim.”

These are the words of the Fifth Khalifah (Successor) of the Promised Messiahas, who is the worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, established in 202 countries and that has tens of millions of followers. It is similar message the Khalifah has delivered at numerous functions around the world, explaining that it is based on the true teachings of Islam and the example set

by Muhammadsa. More than just delivering a message, the Ahmadis to whom this message refers to, have demonstrated its practical fulfilment, in every country they live in. The Review of Religions has covered numerous events and functions in which non-Muslim guests declare that Ahmadis are model citizens and beacons of integration into Western societies. If, as the Khalifah of the Promised Messiahas has repeatedly expounded, the

above message is based on the true teachings of Islam, why then, is there so much furore in the West regarding the lack of integration of Muslims into their societies ? The above message by the Khalifah may appear to be at odds with certain other Muslim leaders, who often advise the Muslims to remain distant from followers of other religions, or with the general perception of the West regarding Muslim integration. It is entirely correct that even many non-Ahmadi Muslims may successfully integrate into Western societies and are undoubtedly good citizens and good people. However, devoid of the fresh interpretations provided by the Promised Messiahas, their successful integration may not be witnessed on a collective level amongst all Muslims, whereas in the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, practically every single member, on both an individual and collective level, does his or her utmost to ensure they fulfil the message quoted at the outset by the Khalifah of the Promised Messiahas.

Ahmadis are able to do so without sacrificing their religious values. Here, the context is all important: The Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, proclaimed over 100 years ago that he had come in fulfilment of the prophecies of various religions, which foretold that in last days a Messiah would appear. In Islam, the concept of the Messiah

and Imam Mahdi revolved around the moral decline of Muslims. The Qur’an and the Holy Prophetsa prophesised that in the latter days, when the Muslims would largely desist from following the true teachings of Islam, when the Muslims would be divided in a large number of sects, God would at that point send His vicegerent – the Messiah – who having acquired Divine knowledge, would restore the correct teachings of Islam and true belief and faith in the Muslims.

The Messiah would explain the underlying philosophy behind Qur’anic verses and the sayings of Muhammadsa and rectify erroneous interpretations of Islamic teachings and the Qur’an – and would do so through presenting rational arguments and with love. In this edition, the Khalifah of the Promised Messiahas explains the true concept of Muslim integration in the West to an audience in Germany. Further, at the opening of the first Jamiah Ahmadiyya in mainland Europe – an Ahmadiyya Theological institute for training missionaries - His Holiness explains the role of Ahmadi Muslim missionaries who will graduate from the institute. We urge our Western readers to ponder over the message of the Khalifah of the Promised Messiahas.

The task for which God has appointed me is that I should remove the malaise that afflicts the relationship between God and

His creatures and restore the relationship of love and sincerity between them.

Through the proclamation of truth and

by putting an end to religious conflicts, I should bring about peace and manifest the Divine verities that have become hidden from the eyes of the world. I am called upon to demonstrate spirituality which lies buried under egoistic darkness.

It is for me to demonstrate by practice, and not by words alone, the Divine powers which penetrate into a human being and are manifested through prayer or attention. Above all, it is my task to re-establish in people’s hearts the eternal plant of the pure and shining Unity of God which is free from every impurity of polytheism, and which has now completely disappeared. All this will be accomplished, not through my power, but through the power of the Almighty God, Who is the God of heaven and earth.

There is no clearer and easier way to believe in the existence of God than through the understanding that He reveals to His close servants matters of the unseen and prophecies regarding future events. He discloses to those who are close to Him the deep hidden secrets, because there is no way for man to be enlightened about such secrets of the future as are beyond the reach of human faculties. It is indeed true that knowledge of unseen events and hidden matters, especially those which are related to the exercise of Divine power and will, are matters that man can never attain through his own efforts. Therefore, God has bestowed His beneficence upon me and has chosen me out of the whole world so that, through the manifestation of His signs, He may bring back to the MARCH 2013

right path those who have gone astray.

But God has observed from heaven that the helpers and followers of the Christian faith i.e. the Christian clergy, have wandered far from the truth, and have become a people who have not only lost the straight path themselves but they traverse thousands of miles of land and ocean and endeavour to convert others to their own doctrines. They do not know the true God, but their god is their own invention. Therefore, God’s mercy for mankind demanded that He should rescue His creatures from their deception. He has, for this reason, sent this Messiah so that through the right reasoning and argument he should break the cross that had broken and wounded the body of Jesusas.

Spread of the Jama‘at Although our Jama‘at has not yet spread in large numbers in different parts of the world, my followers are to be found in many places, from Peshawar to Bombay, Calcutta, Hyderabad Deccan, and even in Arab countries. This Jama‘at initially spread and increased in the Punjab and now I find that it is progressing in most parts of India. Its membership is composed more of learned people and less of others…..The grace and power of God Almighty have frustrated the plans of Maulawis and has increased our Jama‘at in an extraordinary way and is increasing it continuously. In this Jama‘at will be found largely people who are disposed to virtue, fear God, show compassion for mankind and strive heart and soul for the success of the faith.

Their hearts are filled with the greatness of God Almighty; they are sensible and intelligent; they are men of high resolve, and have true love for God and His Messengersa . I perceive that it is the Divine design to foster this Jama‘at and

that they may realise that he who comes from God is never in a loss.

[8] God has promised me that until the world comes to an end He will continue to manifest my blessings so much so, that kings shall seek blessings from my garments.

[9] Twenty years ago, God gave me the glad tiding that I would be denied and that people would not accept me, but that He will accept me and manifest my truth with powerful assaults.

whom He will breathe the blessings of the Holy Spirit. He will be characterised by inner purity and will have a close holy relationship with God. He will be [English Translation: A manifestation of the True and the High.]

And it will seem as if God has descended from heaven.

It will spread in the East and West, North and South, and Islam will become synonymous with this Jama‘at. These are not the words of man. This is a revelation from God for Whom nothing is impossible. has become weak, and they take life after death no more seriously than a fable. The conduct of every person proclaims that he has not the faith and trust in God and in the hereafter as he has in the world and its ranks and its resources. Tongues profess a lot but the hearts are suffused with the love of the world. It is the same condition in which the Messiahas had found the Jews. As a characteristic of the weakness of their faith, the moral condition of the Jews had deteriorated greatly, and love of God had become cold in their hearts. The same is true in my time. I have been sent so that truth and faith may be revived and righteousness may inspire the hearts. This is the purpose of my advent. I have been told that heaven will once more come near the earth after it had moved far away. These are the reforms that I have to bring about and these are the tasks for which I have been sent.

Almighty and should be delivered from the life which leads to hell and ruin and which is known as the life of sin. In fact, this is the most important objective before them. Now that God Almighty has established a dispensation and has raised me, the same purpose which is common to all Prophetsas is also the purpose of my coming, namely, that I wish not only to tell the world what God is, but I actually want them to see Him, and to show them the way of desisting from sin.

There is jubilation in heaven and people’s good qualities are stimulated through the spread of spirituality and light. So, the one who possesses the capacity of receiving revelation, begins to receive revelation, and the one who has the capacity to gain understanding by reflecting upon matters of faith, his power of reflection and understanding is augmented, and the one inclined towards worship begins to find pleasure in worship and supplication, and the one who engages in discourse with the followers of other faiths, is bestowed

I wish not only to tell the world what God is, but I actually want them to see Him, and to show them the way of desisting from sin.

the power of reasoning and carrying the arguments to a convincing conclusion.

In fact, all this results from the diffusion of spirituality, which descends from heaven with the Imam of the age and finds its way into every eager heart. This is a general phenomenon and a Divine practice to which the Holy Qur’an and the authentic Ahadith guide us and which I have observed through my personal experiences. But the age of the Promised Messiah has a unique characteristic, which is that in the scriptures of earlier Prophetsas and in Ahadith it is recorded that at the time of advent of the Promised Messiah, the spread of spiritual light will reach a degree that women will also receive revelations, children will be able to prophesy and common people will speak with the power of the Holy Spirit. All this will be a reflection of the spirituality of the Promised Messiah.

NE W AND E X CLUSIVE When the light of the sun falls upon a wall, it is illuminated, and if it has been white-washed with lime it shines even more, and if it is studded with mirrors it reflects the light so strongly that the naked eye can hardly bear its reflection.

But the wall cannot claim that the light is its own, for the light vanishes altogether after sunset. In the same manner, all the light of revelation is a reflection of the light of the Imam of the age.

Ghazwah of Banu Qainuqa‘ Late 2 A.H. It has already been mentioned that when the Holy Prophet sa migrated from Makkah and arrived in Madinah, there were three tribes among the Jews, which inhabited Madinah at the time.

Their names were, Banu Qainuqa‘, Banu Nadir and Banu Quraizah. As soon as the Holy Prophetsa came to Madinah, he settled treaties of peace and security with these tribes, and laid the foundation for peaceful and harmonious cohabitation.

By virtue of agreement, all parties were responsible for maintaining peace and security in Madinah, and if a foreign enemy was to attack Madinah, everyone was collectively responsible for its defence.1 In the beginning, the Jews conformed to the treaty, and at least, did not openly create conflict with the Muslims.

It is narrated in a Hadith that after the treaty, which had been settled with the Jews, the Holy Prophetsa would even take special care to protect their sentiments. a mischievous Jew reached this gathering and began to mention the Battle of Bu‘ath. This was the horrific war, which took place between these two tribes a few years prior to the migration, and in which many people from among the Aus and Khazraj were slain at the hands of one another. As soon as this war was mentioned, memories of the past were refreshed and scenes of ancient enmity began to run before the eyes of various emotional people. The result was that from satirical remarks, taunt and slander, the matter escalated to such an extent that both parties found themselves at daggers drawn in the very same gathering. Thank God, however, that the Holy Prophetsa was notified in due time and he immediately arrived at the scene with a community of the Muhajirin and calmed both parties down; and rebuked them as well saying, “Do you follow a way of ignorance while I am amongst you? value the favour of God that through Islam He has made you brothers.” The Ansar were so deeply moved by this admonition that their eyes began to flow with tears, and they began to embrace one another whilst repenting for their action.2 When the Battle of Badr had taken place and Allah the Exalted, in His Grace, granted a convincing victory to the Muslims, despite them being few and without means over a very fierce army of the Quraish, and the prominent leaders of Makkah were mixed to dust, the Jews of Madinah went up in flames of jealousy. They began to openly hurl stinging comments at the Muslims and publicly asserted in gatherings that, “So what if you have defeated the army of the Quraish. Let Muhammadsa fight us and we shall demonstrate how wars are fought.”3 This escalated to such an extent that in one gathering they even uttered such words in the very presence of the Holy Prophetsa. As such, there is a narration that after the Battle of Badr, when the Holy Prophetsa returned to Madinah, one day, he gathered the Jews and admonished them and whilst presenting his claim, invited them to Islam. The chieftains among the Jews responded to this peaceful and sympathetic address of the Holy Prophetsa in the following words,

“O Muhammadsa, it seems that you have guidance of their Master, the Muslims perhaps become arrogant after killing a demonstrated patience in every way and few Quraish. Upon this, the Muslim was showered with swords from all directions and this remarkably indignant Muslim was put to death. When the Muslims were informed of this event in national indignation, their eyes gorged with blood in rage. On the other hand, the Jews who desired to make this incident an excuse to fight, congregated in the form of a crowd and a state of riot 20 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

broke out.9 When the Holy Prophetsa was informed of this, he gathered the chieftains of the Banu Qainuqa‘ and explained that such behaviour was not appropriate and that they should refrain from such mischief and fear God. Instead of expressing disappointment and remorse, they responded with very refractory answers and repeated their earlier threat that, “Do not become arrogant over your victory at Badr. When you are to fight us you shall come to know the real likes of warriors.”10 Left with no other choice, the Holy Prophetsa set out towards the fortresses of the Banu Qainuqa‘ with a force of Companions. Now this was the last opportunity for them to express remorse over their actions, but instead, they stood ready for war.11 Therefore, war was declared and the forces of Islam and Judaism came forth to battle one another.

According to the custom of that era, a method of warfare was that one party would secure themselves within their fortresses and wait. The opposing force would besiege the fortress and whenever an opportunity presented itself, now and then, attacks would be launched against one another. This would continue until the surrounding army would either lose hope in capturing the fortress and lift the siege, and this would be considered a victory to the ones besieged; or being

It is on the basis of these reasons that I have placed the Ghazwah of Banu Qainuqa‘ in late 2 A.H., after the Ghazwah of Sawiq and the Rukhsatanah of Hazrat Fatimahra.20

Then, the irony is that Mr. Margoliouth himself accepts the fact that he has written this on the basis of his own speculation.22

At this occasion, it would also be appropriate to mention that whilst describing the cause leading up to the Ghazwah of Banu Qainuqa‘, Mr. Margoliouth has concocted a most strange and unusual theory of his own accord, which is not even remotely alluded to in a single narration. There is a narration in Bukhari that in a state of intoxication (until then, drinking had not yet been forbidden), Hazrat Hamzahra killed two camels belonging to Hazrat ‘Alira, which he had received from the spoils of Badr.21 Attaching this separate incident to the Ghazwah of Banu Qainuqa‘, without any historical evidence whatsoever, Mr. Margoliouth writes that the Holy Prophetsa invaded the tribe of Banu

Muslim county, it is a significant event for an institution to open for the training of Imams. For such an institution to open in Germany is extraordinary. Only a few years ago Islamic studies was newly introduced in some German Universities.

However, today holds far greater significance. This institution was established by the Ahmadiyya Community and is the first of its kind in Germany. At present in Europe the only similar institution is found in London, but London’s population runs into millions whereas the

Dignitaries, journalists and local residents were all invited to the historic occasion, and they came to learn first-hand of the teachings inculcated

The Mayor later remarked that His Holiness in his address had expressed words from the heart and had imparted a very positive and crucial advice when he said to the students that they should act upon the teachings they learn and present their practical models.

Wolf Walther, Secretary of the German Islam Conference, met with students of the Jamiah and later said that he had been extremely impressed by the Jamiah and the address of the His Holiness. He said that he thought it was an excellent gesture by the Ahmadiyya Community to invite the local mayor and other dignitaries to the opening. Mentioning how impressed he had been by the personality of His Holiness, he remarked that he had appreciated the advice of His Holiness to the students of the Jamiah that they should ensure they always met with local Germans with love and affection and in a friendly manner.

for Integration and Europe in the Hesse Ministry of Justice, said: “In the context of integration and from a general political perspective of the public, it is very appropriate and important that this institution has been established in which Imams will be trained.

Such Imams will be trained here who speak the German language, are familiar with German history and culture and also live here…for this reason they will become excellent means of contact for the Muslims of the country…It is my desire that Jamiah Ahmadiyya successfully achieves its aims.”

The inauguration was widely reported in regional newspapers and TV stations.

After the event a press conference was also held in which various questions were presented to and then answered by His Holiness.

Keynote Address by Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Translated from the Urdu by AbdulQuddus Arif After reciting Tashahhud, Ta’awwuz and Bismillah, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba said: “Today at this present moment in time, sitting amongst us, aside from the students of Jamiah Ahmadiyya and other Ahmadis, are distinguished guests who

have no connection with Islam and belong to other faiths. Thus, first of all, I would like to thank all of them for attending our function and gracing us with their presence. They have expressed the fact that the Ahmadiyya Community presents a peaceful Islam, which is the true Islam. They have expressed that there should be mutual relations between different faiths and that the educated youth of this country have enrolled as students in this Jamiah Ahmadiyya to acquire knowledge, in order that they may present the true image of Islam to the citizens and inform them of the true Islam and to also remove the misconceptions regarding Islam that have arisen owing to some extremists. Nevertheless, all these expressions are such that show that they have certain expectations from the Ahmadiyya Community. God willing, as the past 123/124 years of the history of the Community bears witness, Ahmadiyyat is the true Islam that presents love, affection and brotherhood, and God willing they will see that the graduates from this institution will convey the true picture of this Islam to the citizens of this country.

Here, I would like to add a point further.

been repeatedly mentioned; however, in this Jamiah Ahmadiyya, students from other European countries like Belgium, Holland and other countries [France] are also studying here. So German students are not the only ones studying here, in fact in this small city, as the respected Mayor said, that after London, this small city of Reichstadt is where Jamiah Ahmadiyya has been established to teach Islamic studies. This institution has been established in a city that not only has German students, but students from other European countries also come to acquire knowledge. Thus, from this small city, a light of knowledge is to emerge and disseminate across the whole of Europe. The European Union is working in unison due to social, economic and political reasons; however, the Europeans are not paying attention towards religion. Therefore, it is the Ahmadiyya Community that has united Europe in the city of Reichstadt in another way.

From here, the propagators of the true teachings of Islam will spread across Europe and it is even possible that they will present the true picture of Islam beyond Europe. Thus, accordingly, this city has been granted a great distinction.

my main agenda, which is to address the students today in relation to the inauguration of Jamiah Ahmadiyya.

The students of Jamiah Ahmadiyya and the entire Ahmadiyya Community of Germany should be thankful to Allah the Exalted that He has granted us the opportunity to establish Jamiah Ahmadiyya here. This was a great project. The Ahmadiyya Community does not have oil money neither does it rely upon trade. The Ahmadiyya Community is a small Community – every single project it undertakes, whether it is the building of mosques or missions, or sending missionaries abroad, or preaching programmes, or publishing literature or training the missionaries of Jamiah Ahmadiyya, they are all funded by the Chanda - the financial sacrifices of members of the Ahmadiyya Community. As I have stated, this was a major project and I thought it would take a few more years to complete; however by the sheer grace of Allah the Exalted, the Ahmadiyya Community of Germany were granted the opportunity to complete this complex quickly and today we have a beautiful building wherein consists all the facilities for the students of Jamiah Ahmadiyya.

The students should also be thankful to Allah the Exalted for this, and a way of expressing their gratification is by

completely focusing upon their education and endeavour to attain that objective for which you have entered into Jamiah Ahmadiyya and this objective is to save the world from destruction; and cultivate within yourselves that love and affection for all people of the world, that which cannot be found within a worldly person.

Therefore, understand this responsibility.

Moreover, the ways to fulfil this objective is by acquiring education, and after the completion of this education, make a vow to spread it in the best manner possible.

How is it possible to save the world from destruction? Firstly, there are worldly and political endeavours. We are continuously giving messages of peace, love and affection. Worldly people also warn others about the circumstances of war and I have been voicing this upon various occasions. However, a preacher and missionary, who is being educated in Jamiah Ahmadiyya, has to make the world aware

of the existence of God the Exalted. He has to fulfil his responsibilities in order to bring people closer towards God the Exalted. He has to make the world aware that peace, justice and love cannot be achieved until the hearts realise that our every action and deed is being witnessed

by God the Exalted.

Therefore, whenever you make an effort to make people aware of this; firstly, you will have to realise this and hold yourself responsible for this. You will have to practice this teaching yourself and form a relation with God the Exalted. Only then can you truly tell others Who God is and, what God’s teachings are and the degree of God’s love towards His creation, and due to this love, God the Exalted has sent prophets for the reformation of man in every age, and completed and perfected the faith at the end by sending the Holy Prophetsa. process and for the rejuvenation of this final and complete religion again, to make it practice-able for this age and to present it in its [original] beauty, He sent the Promised Messiahas in this age.

Thus, before you inform others, you would have to make a self-assessment about what you are. What is your relation with God the Exalted? How do you practice the teachings of Islam? How much do you love and adore the creation of God? If you bear these points in mind then, God willing, your work will continuously be blessed. God the Exalted has stated in the Qur’an that those who acquire religious knowledge should be well-versed.

Therefore, to acquire – religious knowledge – is a commandment, that there should be a body of men amongst you who are well-versed in religious matters.

There are many Waqifeen-e-Nau. Their parents dedicated their lives before their 32 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

birth for the acquisition of religious knowledge, and then later you presented yourself; you were neither compelled nor forced to do so. You yourself volunteered and opted for this, and presented yourself to serve the faith. So now that you have learned about your faith or have come towards the learning of religious knowledge, then you should also be mindful of it. Alongside being well-versed in religion, God the Exalted has also specified the objectives that you should attain. You should warn every nation and wherever you are based, as I have already stated, bring them towards God the Exalted.

Make them aware of the existence of God; make them realise the importance of religion and draw their attention towards bringing an end to misconduct and misguidance. Where God the Exalted has mentioned the importance of His dues and the importance of His rights, there He has also mentioned in

detail the rights pertaining to mankind.

The Promised Messiahas has mentioned exactly the same thing; that there are two great objectives which he has come to the world to fulfil. Firstly, to draw man closer towards his Creator, and secondly to draw man’s attention towards fulfilling each other’s rights. From this, another point that comes to light is the ending of all types of religious warfare.

Today, the picture of Islam being portrayed to the world is that Islam is an extremist religion; a religion of extremism and that Islam only promotes terrorism. To remove these misconceptions from the minds of others, you will have to change your attitudes. Your attitudes should be of mutual love and affection. Although you have been commanded ‘To be compassionate towards each other’, but along with this, there is the command that a true Muslim is he from whom every peaceful person is protected and all peaceful and loving people and every person who spreads peace does not merely protect, rather, he is responsible for safe-guarding peace as well.

This is the teaching that you have to impart to the world and this is the goal by means of which you will do justice to the responsibility of Tafaquh fideen

[becoming well-versed in religious matters]. You should pay attention to this all the time. Apart from this, there are other high moral standards concerning the rights of men, which are included therein. The further in-depth you go in to this, they will become more apparent to you. It is your responsibility to acquire these details and act accordingly.

To create this true spirit, God the Exalted has given us an example in the Holy Qur’an of how this can be achieved.

He states to take the example of the honey-bee; you should work in the same pattern as it does. Albeit now, bees are being domesticated and bred in combs on ground level, however even then they have a certain degree of elevation.

Generally the hives of the bee are in lofty places. We observe this on the mountains and trees as God has also stated.

Therefore, your thoughts should also be elevated, the vastness of your knowledge should also be touching peaks; it should not only depend upon worldly things but instead it should be scraping the canopy of the heavens. You should make the being of Allah your objective, as opposed to worldly people. This is also a lesson the honey-bee teaches us that you should keep your objectives high; the greatest height is the Being of God the MARCH 2013

Exalted. By grasping this main objective, no worldly objective can harm you in any way.

God the Exalted has stated that the bee gathers nectar from different fruits to make into honey. Here, different fruits are being presented to you. Now the Qur’an is the fountainhead of all qualities, the source of all teachings and a spring that leads towards Allah the Exalted and contains the most supreme lesson about fulfilling the rights of mankind. It contains the lesson of religious tolerance and respecting the sentiments of every religion. This is the teaching that you are gaining here. In addition there are explanations in the Ahadith which have been stated by the Holy Prophetsa.. You are attaining this knowledge here. The Islamic jurists have done various commentaries on it, and you are studying Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence).

Furthermore, you are studying comparative religions to learn other faiths.

You will study Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and other religions so that you know what their teachings are and what are the teachings of Islam. If any faith falsely accuses Islam, then you will know what your response should be.

religions, instead of expressing the negative aspects of a religion to others, you should explain the excellences of Islam.

This in-depth knowledge is also vital for you. Moreover, there are some special types of honey that are only prepared for the queen-bee. This refers to your specialisation and your unique qualities. After studying and graduating, some of you will specialise in certain subjects, which would serve as a particular honey or a cure for a particular ailment. We continuously learn a strange lesson from this example. However, after attaining all this, what has the honey-bee taught us next? If you keep this example in mind, you will take a subtle lesson from this. But after learning all this, what have you really learnt?

It is stated ‘Modestly follow the ways of thy Lord’, meaning that after attaining knowledge of the Qur’an, Ahadith and different religions, no arrogance or pride should develop in a missionary.

He should show humility and tread the paths that are beneficial to others; the honey-bee is, for it is providing health for the sick. Our missionaries should give spiritual remedies. This should always be your aim in life. If you bear this in mind then you will see how the world will be drawn towards you, how successful you become in your goals, how the world will come to know the beautiful teachings of

Islam. Whether the students who are from Germany, Belgium or have come from France or Holland and are attaining knowledge here they, God willing, will eventually graduate and become missionaries and spread the message of Islam in their countries. Every single person will return to their vicinities and be the source of spiritual remedies and you will become that remedy.

As far as attaining knowledge is concerned, I have cited this example upon many occasions; the non-Ahmadi maulawies are also very scholarly. They remember many long references and they know an array of books of Ahadith by heart. They have memorised the verses of the Holy Qur’an, with the exact reference numbers, however, since they have not been taught and trained by the Imam of the age, that is why firstly they fail to comprehend this knowledge thoroughly, and secondly this knowledge becomes a source of arrogance for them. Instead of

taking them to the heavens, this arrogance makes them fall into the depths of the earth and they become those who are ever inclined to the world; their false ego and false honour does not provide them that spiritual rank that a true and genuine religious scholar and missionary should possess.

So if you bear this example in mind then you will take a lesson from this. Thus, I would like to reiterate this point that if you have presented yourself and opted for this, and if you want to become the true helpers of the Community of the Promised Messiahas then continuously, in this institution, increase the level of your knowledge, and morals, and make every habit of yours such that are only to be found in an extremely good-moral individual so that you may present the beautiful teachings of Islam in this area.

you have studied here and have been educated here, the majority of you are Asian in appearance, with the exception of one or two students who are local Europeans.

So whenever you go out into the city, people should not fear you and be alarmed about where these 100-150 boys have come from in this small city. [That they are perhaps] the Taliban or extremists or terrorists since their beards, hats, clothes, are giving a strange impression.

One becomes well-known fairly quickly in a small city. Thus, by demonstrating your morals, going to the shops and the market, greeting people on the streets, meeting people with kindness and showing gentle and kind expressions on your face, the city will naturally be drawn to you and then in this area this good conduct will become part of your identity.

This will become a means of spreading the beautiful teachings of Islam.

This is a great responsibility. This is not confined to the fact that after passing the seven-year course, only then will you be considered as working in the practical field. Your work in the practical field has now started. This population of 22,000 are looking to you and wondering whether the Ahmadiyya Community practices what it preaches. your actions, your conduct, your behaviour, your speech and by visiting the city and shops. Always remember, regardless of the fact that if a pupil has become a missionary or is studying in the second, third or fifth year, that you have now become a missionary in this city. You are the missionary of this city, you are the ambassadors of Islam in this city and in this country. Thus, always remember these points and understand your responsibilities. In short, pay attention towards your education with the utmost sincerity.

n 5th December 2012 a VIP reception was held at the Bait-urRasheed Mosque in Hamburg, Germany, in which Hazrat Mir z a Masroor Ahmad aba , Khalifatul Masih V, Head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community delivered a keynote address regarding the integration of Muslims in the West.

developed a concern that by visiting an Ahmadi Mosque it could lead to difficulties or even cause you a great deal of harm. However, as I said, the fact that you are attending this event proves you have no fear of Ahmadi Muslims and do not consider them to be a threat. It shows that you value Ahmadis and believe them to be sincere and decent people just like yourselves and the majority of the population.

with our Community or have old ties of friendship with Ahmadi Muslims; and I am sure that those of you who have only recently been introduced to the Ahmadiyya Community will have already developed a keen desire in their hearts to learn more about the Jama’at. The attendance of all of you proves that you believe that no danger or threat lies in meeting and keeping contact with Ahmadis Muslims and going to their mosques.

Whilst saying this, I do not discount the possibility that there may be a small number of you who, in spite of coming today, still continue to harbour reservations or concerns that there could be some negative consequences of attending.

It is possible you may be worried that you will be sat alongside people with extremist tendencies or mind-set. If any of you do hold such fears you should remove them from your hearts immediately. We are extremely vigilant in this regard and so if by chance any such extremist person tries to enter this mosque or our area, we will take firm action to remove them from the building. So be sure you are in safe hands.

Indeed, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at is a Community in which if any member at any time or place displays extremist tendencies, breaks the law or destroys the peace, they are expelled from the Jama’at (Community). We are duty bound to take such firm action because of our absolute respect for the word ‘Islam’ which literally means ‘peace’ and ‘security’. The true representation of the word ‘Islam’ is demonstrated by our Community. The advent of this true depiction of Islam was actually foretold in a grand prophecy made by the Founder of Islam, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, more than 1400 years ago.

In the prophecy, the Holy Prophetsa said that a time would come when the vast majority of Muslims would forget Islam’s real and pure teachings. According to the prophecy, at such a time Allah would send one person as a Reformer, a Messiah and a Mahdi in order to re-establish true Islam in the world.

We, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, believe the Founder of our Community, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as of Qadian to be the very person sent in fulfilment of the great prophecy. With MARCH 2013

the Grace of Allah this Community has flourished and has spread to 202 countries of the world. In each of these countries, local people of all backgrounds and ethnicities have accepted Ahmadiyyat.

Apart from being Ahmadi Muslims, they continue to play their roles as loyal citizens of their respective countries. There lies no contradiction or conflict between their love for Islam and their love for their country. In fact, both of these loyalties are intertwined and linked together.

Ahmadi Muslims, wherever they reside, are the most law-abiding citizens in the entire nation. Certainly, I can say without a shadow of doubt that these qualities exist in a good majority of members of our Jama’at.

It is due to these attributes that whenever Ahmadi Muslims migrate from one country to another, or in the case where local people have converted to Ahmadiyyat, the Ahmadis never have any concerns about integrating into their new societies; nor do they worry about how they will play their role towards furthering the wide scope of the national interests of their adopted nations. Wherever Ahmadis go they will love their countries like all true citizens should and will spend their lives actively seeking the betterment and progress of 42 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

their nation. It is Islam that teaches us to live our lives in this way, and indeed it does not just gently advocate this, but actually commands us to be absolutely loyal and devoted to our country of residence. Indeed, the Holy Prophetsa particularly emphasised that love for one’s nation is a part of faith for any true Muslim. When loving your country is a basic element of Islam, how can any true Muslim exhibit disloyalty or betray his nation and thereby forgo his faith? In terms of Ahmadi Muslims, at our major events all members of the Community, whether they are men, women, children or the elderly, stand up and make a pledge taking God as their witness. In that pledge they promise to give up their lives, wealth, time and honour not just for their religion but also for the sake of their nations and countries. Therefore, who could prove to be more loyal citizens than those people who are constantly reminded to serve their nation and from whom a pledge is repeatedly taken to be ever-ready to make all sacrifices for the sake of their faith, country and nation?

The question may arise in the minds of some people that here in Germany, the majority of Muslims come from Pakistan, Turkey or other Asian countries, and so when the time comes to make sacrifices

for their nations, they will prefer their countries of origin, rather than Germany.

Thus, I should clarify and explain that when a person acquires German nationality or the nationality of any country, then he becomes a full citizen of that nation. I made this very point earlier this year when I delivered an address at the German Military Headquarters, in Koblenz. I explained, according to Islamic teachings, what should happen if a situation arises whereby Germany is engaged in a war with the country of origin of an immigrant who has become a German citizen. If the immigrant feels sympathy towards his original country and thinks there is a risk of him desiring or causing harm to Germany, then such a person should immediately relinquish his citizenship or immigration status and return to his native country. However, if he chooses to remain, then Islam does not permit any form of disloyalty to the country whatsoever. This is an absolute

Islam does not permit any form of rebellious behaviour, or for a citizen to scheme against his nation—whether adopted nation or otherwise—or to harm it any way. If a person does work against his adopted nation or causes it harm then he should be treated as an enemy of the state, a traitor and be punished according to the laws of the land.

That clarifies the situation in terms of a Muslim immigrant. In the case where a local German or a person of any country, who has converted to Islam, it is perfectly clear that for him or her, there can be no other path than to display absolute loyalty to his or her great nation.

the West take when a Western country engages in war with a Muslim nation? To answer this I should first of all mention that the Founder of our Community, the Promised Messiahas, has explained that we are now in an era where religious wars have completely come to an end.

During the course of history there were times when wars and battles took place between Muslims and the people of other religions. During those battles the goal of the non-Muslims was to kill the Muslims and end Islam.

In most of the early wars, the non-Muslims took the first aggressive steps and so the Muslims had no choice but to defend themselves and their religion. However, the Promised Messiahas explained that such circumstances no longer exist, because there are no modern day governments who are declaring or waging war in an effort to end Islam. To the contrary, there is a great deal of religious freedom in the vast majority of Western and non-Muslim countries. Our Jama’at is extremely grateful that such freedoms exist, which allow Ahmadi Muslims to propagate the message of Islam in nonMuslim countries. Therefore we are able to introduce the real and beautiful teachings of Islam, which are of peace and harmony, to the Western world.

Certainly, it is due to religious freedom and tolerance that I am able to stand before you today and present the true Islam. Clearly therefore, today there is no question of religious wars. The only other situation that can arise is where a majority Muslim country and a majority Christian country, or any other country, are engaged in a non-religious war. How should a Muslim citizen living in those countries, whether Christian or any other religion, react to such circumstances? To answer this question, Islam has provided a golden principle, which is that a person should never assist in cruelty or oppression. Therefore, if cruelty or oppression is perpetrated by a Muslim country then it should be stopped. If cruelty is conducted by a Christian country then that too should be stopped.

How can an individual citizen stop his own country from cruelty and injustice?

The answer to this is very simple. In the present day, democracy is prevalent throughout the Western world. If a just minded citizen sees that his government is acting in an oppressive way, then he should raise his voice in opposition and seek to guide his country to the right path – or even a group of people can rise up.

If a citizen sees that his country is violating the sovereignty of another nation,

then he should draw the attention of his government and raise his concerns. To stand up and peacefully lodge your concerns is not an act of rebellion or revolt.

In fact, it is an expression of true love for your country. A just citizen cannot bear to see the reputation of his country being tarnished or even disgraced amongst the international community and so by calling his country to account he is manifesting his love and loyalty towards it.

As far as the international community and its institutions are concerned, Islam teaches that where a country is unjustly attacked, other nations should unite and seek to stop the aggressor. If the aggressive nation comes to its senses and withdraws, then cruel punishments and unjust decisions should not be imposed upon it in revenge or as a means to take advantage of the situation. Therefore, Islam provides the answers and remedies to all possible situations. The essence of Islamic teachings is that you must spread peace, to the extent that the Holy Prophetsa has defined a Muslim as a person from whose hand and tongue all other peaceful people are safe. As I have already said, Islam has taught that you must never assist in cruelty or oppression.

It is this beautiful and wise teaching that leads a true Muslim to hold a position

of honour and dignity within whichever country he lives. There is no doubt that all sincere and decent people would wish to have such peaceful and considerate people within their societies.

The Holy Prophet Muhammadsa has given Muslims another beautiful teaching to live their lives by. He taught that a true believer should always search for anything that is good and pure. He taught that wherever a Muslim comes across a word of wisdom or anything noble, he should treat it as his personal inheritance. Thus, with the same determination that a person seeks to acquire his rightful inheritance, Muslims are taught they should strive to obtain and benefit from wise counsel and goodness wherever it MARCH 2013

of mutual trust and love. Indeed, who can be more peace loving than a true believer, who apart from fulfilling the requirements of his faith, also tries to adopt all of the good aspects of his or any other society? Who can spread peace and security more than him?

Due to the means of communication available today, the world is now known as a global village. may be found. At a time when there are so many concerns about the integration of immigrants, what a beautiful and perfect guiding principle this is.

Muslims have been taught that in order to integrate with their local societies and develop mutual respect, they should seek to learn about all of the good aspects of every society, every region, every city and every country. It is not enough to simply learn about such values, but Muslims must endeavour to adopt them into their own personal lives. This is guidance that truly inculcates togetherness and a spirit 46 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

Due to the means of communication available today, the world is now known as a global village. This was something that the Holy Prophet sa prophesised about 1400 years ago when he said that a time would come when the world would become like one and distances would appear to shorten. He said that due to the fast and modern means of communication, people would be able to see the entire world. In fact, this is a prophecy of the Holy Qur’an, which he explained at length. Regarding this, the Holy Prophetsa taught that when such a time comes, people should seek to learn and embrace the good things of one another, in the same way that they would seek to find their lost property. In other words, it can be said that all positive things should be adopted, whilst all negative things should be shunned. The Holy Qur’an has explained this commandment by saying a true Muslim is he who enjoins good and forbids evil. Bearing all of this in mind, which country or society can say that it

cannot tolerate or accept for such peace loving Muslims or Islam to be amongst them? Last year I had the opportunity to meet the Mayor of Berlin and I explained to him that Islam teaches that you should treat every good aspect of any nation as though it was your own personal property. In response, he said, that if you act upon this teaching then there is no doubt the entire world will join hands and support you.

I am quite astonished and saddened when I hear that in some parts of Germany there are people who claim that neither Muslims nor Islam have the capability to integrate into German society. Certainly, it is true that the Islam presented by extremists or terrorists does not have the ability to integrate with any country or society, let alone just Germany.

Indeed, a time will surely come when voices of opposition to such extremist ideologies will be raised loudly even in Muslim countries. Nonetheless, the true Islam, which was brought by the Holy Prophetsa, will certainly always attract sincere and decent people towards it. In this era, to revive the original teachings, Allah sent the Promised Messiahas in servitude to the Holy Prophetsa and so his Community practices and preaches the true message of Islam.

Let it be clear that no one can justifiably claim that true Islam cannot integrate into any society. True Islam is that which spreads righteousness and goodness and shuns all forms of evil and wrongdoing. True Islam teaches Muslims to stop evil and cruelty wherever it exists.

Thus, rather than any question of it failing to integrate, true Islam naturally pulls society towards it like a magnet.

Islam teaches that a person should not just strive to acquire or desire peace for himself, but should make full efforts to spread peace and harmony to other people with the same longing they hold for themselves. This selfless attitude is the way to establish peace in the world. Is there any society that would not appreciate such teachings and would not approve MARCH 2013

Islam teaches you must respect and care for the sentiments of other people. This includes religious sentiments and the feelings of others in relation to general social issues. of such an approach? Certainly, a good society could never desire immorality and evil to be spread within it, and it would never oppose for goodness and peace to be promoted.

When we come to define ‘goodness,’ it is possible that there may be differences in defining it between a religious person and a non-religious person. Amongst the aspects of goodness and virtue that Islam speaks of, there are two overarching 48 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

virtues, through which all other forms of goodness emanate. One is the right due to Allah the Almighty and the other is the right due to mankind. Whilst there is a difference in definition in terms of one aspect between a religious person and a non-religious person, in terms of the other aspect, that is the right of mankind, there is none. The rights due to Allah relate to worship and all religions guide their followers with regard to this. In terms of the rights due to man, these are something that both religions and societies have educated mankind about. Islam teaches us in great depth and detail about the rights of mankind and so to cover all of its teachings at this time would prove to be impossible. However, I will mention a few of the important rights established

by Islam, which are necessary for peace to develop within society.

Islam teaches you must respect and care for the sentiments of other people. This includes religious sentiments and the feelings of others in relation to general social issues. On one occasion, in order to safeguard the religious sensitivities of a Jewish man, the Holy Prophetsa sided with the Jew after he reported an argument that had taken place between him and a Muslim. To spare the feelings of the Jewish person, the Holy Prophetsa rebuked the Muslim by saying that he should not claim that the Holy Prophetsa was superior to Moses, although he knew that he had brought the final Law-Bearing Book. This is the manner in which the Holy Prophetsa took care of the feelings of others and established peace within society.

Another great teaching of Islam requires for the rights of the poor and deprived people to be fulfilled. In order to do this, it teaches that people should search for opportunities through which the social standing of the deprived segments of society can be improved. We should seek to help the disadvantaged in a selfless manner and should never exploit them in any way. Unfortunately, in today’s society where projects or opportunities are created to apparently ‘help’ the disadvantaged, they are often based on a system of

credit where the repayment is subject to interest. For example, students are often given loans to help them complete their education or people take loans to start businesses, yet it takes them years or even decades to repay them. If after years of struggle, or an economic crisis strikes, then they can end up at the original level of debt or quite possibly in an even worse financial state. We have witnessed or heard about countless examples of this during the past few years, when many parts of the world have been plagued by a financial crisis.

An allegation commonly made against Islam is that it does not treat women in a fair or equal way. However, this allegation is without any foundation or basis. Islam has given women dignity and honour; I give one or two examples. Islam gave a woman the right to divorce her husband due to wrong behaviour, at a time when women were considered merely a possession or chattel. It is only in the past century that in the developed world this right has been properly established for women. Furthermore, Islam gave women the right to inherit at a time when women were deemed to have no status or worth. This right has also only been granted to the women of Europe in relatively recent times. Islam also imparts MARCH 2013

a right to one’s neighbours.

The Qur’an gives detailed guidance about who constitutes your neighbour and what their rights are. Neighbours include those who sit next to you, the houses nearby, including those who you know and even those who you do not know and, in fact, it encompasses the forty houses surrounding you. Also included as your neighbours are those with whom you travel and so we are commanded to take care of them. This right was emphasised so much that the Holy Prophetsa said he thought that perhaps neighbours would be included amongst the prescribed heirs.

In fact, the Holy Prophetsa went as far as to say that a person from whom his neighbour is not safe cannot be classed as a believer or a Muslim.

Another commandment of Islam for the well-being of others requires all parties to help and support one another in fulfilling the duty to help the weak and vulnerable rise and improve their status. Thus, in order to fulfil its role and to implement these teachings, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at is providing primary and higher education in poor and deprived parts of the world. We are building and running schools, providing stipends and funding scholarships for higher education so that 50 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

those who are deprived can get to a position where they are able to stand upon their own two feet.

Another commandment of Islam is that you must fulfil all of your pledges and covenants. This includes all promises that you make with one another and also requires that a Muslim must fulfil the pledge of loyalty that he makes to his country as a citizen. This is something that I spoke about earlier.

These are just a few points I have mentioned to demonstrate to you the extent to which Islam is such a compassionate and loving religion. It is a matter of great sadness that with the same force that Islam teaches and counsels peace in the world, the opponents of Islam or those who are unacquainted with its true teachings, are raising unfounded allegations against it. As I have said, in this era, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at is propagating and displaying the true message of Islam. In light of this I would request those who raise objections against Islam on the basis of the actions of a minority of Muslims, to certainly question and hold to account those individuals, but they should not use such unjust examples to defame and discredit the true teachings of Islam.

You should not consider the teachings of Islam to be dangerous or a threat to Germany or to any other country. You should not be concerned about whether or not a Muslim can integrate into German society. As I have already said, a distinction of Islam is that it teaches Muslims to adopt all good things and so there is no doubt that Muslims can integrate and live within any society. If somebody does something contrary to it, he is a Muslim by name, but not the follower of the true teachings of Islam.

Certainly, if Muslims are asked to do something that is not right or are told to disregard the instructions of the Holy Qur’an relating to the principles of modesty, the sanctity of the religion or to act against righteousness, then they cannot do so. However, such matters are not a question of integration, but are actually about personal religious freedom.

The violation of religious freedom is not only a question for Muslims alone to stand up against, but in fact all sincere and decent people stand up and speak against this and openly declare that no government or society should interfere with personal religious rights. It is my prayer that Germany, and indeed every country that has become a home

to people of different nationalities and cultures, display the highest standards of tolerance and respect for each other’s feelings and sentiments. In this way, may they become standard bearers for those who display mutual love, affection and peace. This will be the means for guaranteeing the world’s permanent peace and security, so the world can be saved from the destruction that it is heading towards as a result of a complete lack of mutual tolerance.

The threat of horrific destruction is looming over us and so to save us from such devastation, every country and every individual, whether religious or not, needs to tread very, very carefully.

May every person throughout the world come to realise this reality. At the end I would like to once again thank all of you for taking the time to come and attend and listen to what I have said today.

In December 2012, when the whole of Germany was facing a bitterly cold spell, the hearts of German Ahmadis were warmed by the sight of their beloved Khalifah. After delivering a momentous address to the European Parliament, Khalifatul Masih Vaba visited Germany where His Holiness inaugurated the 52 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

new building of the Ahmadiyya School of Theology called Jamiah Ahmadiyya, held a class for Waqf-e-Nau youth and presided over many official meetings of internal sub-organisations of the Ahmadiyya Community in Germany to give directions, advice and support.

His Holiness met many dignitaries from German society to raise awareness about the true teachings of Islam. In his busy schedule His Holiness found time for ordinary Ahmadi families by doing

6th December 2012 His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba arrived at the Bait-ur-Rasheed Mosque in Hamburg, Germany at 7:15am and led the Salat-ul-Fajar (formal Prayers at dawn). His Holiness spent the morning carrying out his official duties.

This included responding to the correspondence pertaining to different matters associated with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, amongst other various tasks.

After leading the congregational Prayers of early and late afternoon, His Holiness carried out his official commitments.

In the late afternoon, His Holiness convened family Mulaqaat (private audience) for members of the Ahmadiyya Jama’at Germany. This was a memorable experience for those who were able to benefit from the blessed company of their beloved Khalifah. They requested His Holiness for prayers for the health of the sick and means of good livelihoods, coupled with other difficulties that they were currently enduring. They also sought His Holiness’s advice and guidance with respect to important business and family matters. Students asked for supplications for success in their exams. These precious moments always leave an everlasting impression on those who are fortunate enough to experience them, and it was no MARCH 2013

different for the families who gathered in Hamburg that afternoon. Each family had a picture taken with their beloved Khalifah. Students were rewarded with pens, and chocolates were distributed amongst younger children. Later that evening, His Holiness attended the Ameen ceremonies (a ceremony held after the first complete reading of the Holy Qur’an) of 57 children from all over Germany, following which His Holiness led the early and late evening Prayers before retiring for the night.

7th December 2012 Khalifatul Masih Vaba started the day by leading the early morning prayers (Salatul-Fajr). It had been snowing overnight and the temperature was -5 degrees Celsius – snow and ice painted the entire town of Hamburg. Notwithstanding these adverse weather conditions, a large number of men, women and children braved the cold and arrived at Bait-urRasheed to offer their morning prayers behind their revered Khalifah. Later that morning, His Holiness attended to various official commitments, before setting off to offer Salat-ul-Jummah (Friday

prayers), which had been arranged in Hamburg’s largest sports hall in the neighbourhood of Alsterdorf. A large number of Ahmadis from different parts of Germany travelled up to 650 kilometres to partake in this blessed occasion. The journey to Alsterdorf, which was marred by widespread snow, slippery roads and traffic jams, did not dampen the spirit of these committed worshippers. Their spiritual journey was motivated by a divinely guided inspiration. Nearly three thousand worshippers arrived at this small neighbourhood to attend the Friday Prayers and His Holiness’s sermon was transmitted live across the globe through MTA (Muslim Television Ahmadiyya International).

The remainder of the day was spent in more family meetings with the Khalifatul Masih Vaba and other official commitments and engagements. His Holiness retired to his residence after leading the Salat-ul-Maghrib and Salat-ul-Isha’a (early and late evening prayers).

8th December 2012 The day began as per routine with Khalifatul Masih Vaba leading Salat-ulFajr at 7:15am. Despite temperatures falling to -11 degrees Celsius and heavy snowfall, nearly a thousand men, women and children attended these early morning prayers. Later that morning, His Holiness blessed various families with Mulaqaat.

In the afternoon, His Holiness travelled to Mahdi-Abad, which is located in Nahe, a municipality in the district of Segeberg in Schleswig-Holstein around 30 kilometres from Hamburg. A native of this municipality was blessed with the opportunity of embracing Ahmadiyyat during the lifetime of the Promised Messiahas. from surrounding areas came to welcome His Holiness. His Holiness laid the foundation stones for four houses, following which he joined his followers for lunch and led silent prayers. The early and mid-afternoon prayers were offered in congregation. This was followed by an inspection of the local Langar Khana (kitchen). Later that day, His Holiness returned to Hamburg and presided over a class with local Waqifeen-e-Nau children.

Following presentations from various Waqf-e-Nau youth, His Holiness offered his advice to the young children and outlined certain instructions. His Holiness instructed that the central magazine for Waqf-e-Nau boys; Ishmael, should be translated into German in order to enable these children to understand the significance of their pledge to lead their lives as life-devotees. His Holiness presented a Hadith (saying of The Holy Prophetsa) 56 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

to the class in which the Holy Prophetsa expounded that the life of this world is as transient as the fleeting moments spent by a desert traveller sheltering under a tree during his journey. While the cool respite offered by the shade of the tree against the desert sun is soothing to the traveller, he must not be distracted from his ultimate journey towards God the Exalted. It was by the virtue of this symbolic journey that the Holy Prophetsa led his life. The entire purpose of the life of the Holy Prophetsa was to guide mankind on how to attain nearness to the One God and spread the message of peace, love and harmony amongst all.

His Holiness reminded the Waqf-e-Nau that the Holy Prophetsa strived to spread the word of God far beyond what was required of him. So much so that God the Exalted urged His Messengersa to relieve himself of the undue burden he had taken upon himself worrying over those who did not accept God. God the Almighty has made it abundantly clear that accepting guidance is in His Hands alone. The preacher’s task is to merely propagate the message of Islam to the best of his ability. Thus, today this task must be carried on by individuals who have dedicated their lives to the service of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

over the reduced number of Ahmadi boys joining Jamiah Ahmadiyya (Institute of Theology & Comparative Religions run by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community) at a time when there is a pressing need for a greater number of Waqf-e-Nau boys to be trained as missionaries. Reminding the youth that God had ordained upon man the acquisition of the knowledge of truth and spreading it to the whole world, His Holiness stressed that at least 20% of Waqf-e-Nau boys should join Jamiah Ahmadiyya.

becoming consumed by the luxuries of this world and forget the true purpose of their life. His Holiness reminded these young devotees that loyalty to their faith demands that the blessings of this world – like good schools and education — should enhance their gratitude to God the Exalted and increase their commitment to religion.

While commenting upon a poem

by Mirza Bashir-Ud-Din Mahmud Ahmadra, second Khalifah (Successor) to the Promised Messiahas, His Holiness cautioned that electronic media, television shows, internet, chatting online and Facebook would more likely lead one to commit sins rather than draw one towards piety. Therefore, there is an onus of responsibility on all the Waqf-e-Nau to strive earnestly to guard against all such vanity and remain firmly committed to their pledge of loyalty towards God. Moreover, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba offered the following advice to all Waqfe-Nau children: • Waqf-e-Nau youth should remain resolute in offering the five daily prayers.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba stated that he had outlined several instructions during the National Ijtima (convention) for Waqf-e-Nau in the UK, and those instructions should be translated into German and should be followed. Waqfe-Nau children everywhere must make every effort to act upon these instructions and continuously strive to elevate their standards of faith and commitment towards their cause.

• Waqf-e-Nau children must heed the Promised Messiah’sas call to form a bond of commitment and dedication with him that transcends any other worldly bond. They will be successful in doing so by reading the wealth of literature authored by the Promised Messiahas. Hazrat Mirza Bashir-UdDin Mahmud Ahmad ra gave glad tidings to all those who endeavoured to read the books of the Promised Messiahas with sincerity and dedication, that Angels shall descend on them and guide them towards acts of righteousness.

• His Holiness stated that it was essential for all 15 to 18 year old Waqfe-Nau to complete their formal course.

He noted that it was inconsequential if only 50% of Waqf-e-Nau children had

Ideally, Waqf-e-Nau youth should be able to read these reports in Urdu on their own, however if that is not possible, they should request someone to read it to them.

In response to a question from a new convert to Islam, His Holiness explained that while it was possible that certain Ahmadi individuals do not provide good role models for the Community, it was important to focus on raising awareness about the true teachings of Islam rather than concentrating on individual actions.

His Holiness warned that a third world war with devastating consequences might besiege the world, following which people will be compelled to turn towards religion. Therefore, it is essential that we seek protection from such devastation through earnest prayers, and indeed, the pious and the righteous will not be harmed. The Promised Messiahas, alludes to such an eventuality in one of his writings; he described it as being a “fire upon fire”, but stated that all those who believe and put their trust in their Lord will be protected. Khalifatul Masih Vaba, in light of this warning, reiterated his calls for Ahmadi men and women to incline towards righteousness, be regular in offering the daily prayers, form a deeprooted and personal connection with God so that the righteous may be saved to reform the world. His Holiness said that the Ahmadi men and women carried a huge load of responsibility to guide the

In the first half of the class, Waqfe-Nau girls made presentations, and His Holiness praised the arrangements made for the programme. However, His Holiness stressed that it was very important to pay heed to and act upon what had been said that day. He underscored the fact that it was Ahmadi men and women who must be the archetypes of good values, and that they can only attain this by practicing good deeds and shunning evil. His Holiness noted that this was an essential lesson for all Waqf-e-Nau girls to bear in mind.

His Holiness advised these young girls that the most vital facet of their devotion was to recognise that their lives had been devoted to the service of Islam even before their birth, and thus the essence of

their journey was to appreciate that they were different from others in this unique manner. The purpose of their lives transcended a preoccupation with personal desires and each Waqf-e-Nau girl must strive to lead an exemplary life for others to emulate. Having renewed their pledge of Waqf at the age of 15, each Waqf-eNau girl must be able to appreciate the distinction between right and wrong. His Holiness reiterated that Waqfe-e-Nau girls would be deemed to have discharged their duties towards their pledge only if they conducted themselves with dignity and made earnest attempts to live their lives in a pious and humble manner.

Quoting a Hadith enumerating the virtues of obedience, Khalifatul Masih Vaba mentioned the importance of obedience and faithfulness towards the Community, even under difficult circumstances. He noted that a personal disagreement with officeholders should not become a hindrance in serving the Community.

The spirit of true obedience to the Community entails conformity in the face of adversity, in spite of one’s personal grievances with colleagues or superiors.

His Holiness emphasised that the resolution of all problems lied in forming a strong personal connection with God. He stressed that it is God alone who is

our saviour and that relying on earthly sources for help is futile.

Khalifatul Masih Vaba said that the values and conduct of Waqf-e-Nau girls must be exemplary in every respect. He stated that girls who have attained the age of 13 or 14 years old must dress in a modest and dignified manner. His Holiness advised the Waqf-e-Nau girls that they must not get carried away by fashion; there is no harm in being fashionable, but any fashion trends that impact on modesty should be avoided. Reminding his audience that Purdah (Islamic way of covering modestly) is a Divine commandment, His Holiness stated that it was the obligation of every Ahmadi girl who comes of age to cover herself in an appropriate manner. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba reminded the Waqf-e-Nau girls that they should not let themselves get detracted from Purdah even if they see that the daughters of high officials in the Jama’at do not observe proper Purdah; it is the task of Waqf-e-Nau girls to reform them. Recapping their responsibilities, His Holiness said that Waqf-e-Nau girls need to play a pivotal role in reforming girls of their own age and women older than them. Only then would their pledge of devotion be regarded as true devotion.

In response to a question from one of the girls, His Holiness furnished some guidance with respect to how Waqf-e-Nau girls should conduct themselves in marital relationships. girls should strive to become a true reflection of the teachings of Islam. He stated that articles from Maryam magazine should be translated into German and made available to the girls here. Advising that an earnest and concerted effort must be made in order to gain knowledge of the teachings of Islam, His Holiness furnished the following guidance: • Firstly, the daily Salat must always be offered on time.

• Secondly, the Holy Qur’an should be recited daily, and a genuine effort must be made to emulate the virtues contained therein.

• Thirdly, in order to fully understand the meaning of the teachings of The Holy Qur’an, the books of the Promised Messiahas must be read with care.

• Fourthly, Friday sermons should be followed regularly and acted upon.

Moreover, Waqf-e-Nau girls must try and comprehend His Holiness’s speeches delivered for Lajna.

His Holiness stated that he had issued various instructions regarding the use of Facebook, chatting and other similar online activities. He reiterated his advice about not participating in online chat rooms and refrain from using Facebook.

He stated that while these activities were not sins in themselves, however, they had a potential to corrupt minds. Similarly, he noted that certain television programmes are most inappropriate for an Ahmadi woman to watch, therefore she must guard against them. His Holiness said that a true Waqf-e-Nau’s duty is to reform the world, and this could not be done without reforming oneself.

In response to a question from one of the girls, His Holiness furnished some guidance with respect to how Waqf-eNau girls should conduct themselves in marital relationships. His Holiness stated that they must invest time and energy into cementing their relationships, must never be the initiators of a domestic argument and should never give anyone an opportunity to say that a Waqf-e-Nau

girl did not behave well in her marital life. The Khalifatul Masih Vaba stated that he feels personally distressed when marriages in the Community break down.

Waqf-e-Nau girls should strive in earnest to make their marriages work. His Holiness noted that he had issued clear instructions with respect to sharing a picture of the girl with the boy’s family whilst considering a marriage proposal.

He stressed on the fact that pictures of girls must not be used in a disrespectful manner or displayed on the internet via Facebook and other social media.

In response to another question His Holiness explained that experiencing true dreams is a great privilege and blessing that must not be turned into a source of pride. Instead, should anyone experience a true dream, he or she must engage in Istighfar (Seeking forgiveness) in order to enhance his virtuousness.

One of the girls asked His Holiness why, when a child has done something wrong, the Jama’at places restrictions on the child’s parents as well? His Holiness inquired whether the restrictions being referred to were a prohibition on paying “Chanda” and devoting time to the service of the Jama’at, and she replied in the affirmative. Henceforth, His Holiness

explained that if a child or young adult has committed a serious wrong, relevant officials of the Jama’at in his or her region compile a report regarding the incident and forward the report to the UK for His Holiness’s review. The final verdict on the incidence is decided by the Khalifah of the time. The penalties imposed may range from a ban on making financial contributions, to a ban on attending Jama’at functions or at times expulsion from the Jama’at. His Holiness noted that he did not like placing restrictions on Ahmadis, however when it is necessary, he does so with a very heavy heart.

He explained that the problem is that the children of a person who is serving as a high-office holder in the Jama’at are engaged in wrong practices, it conveys the impression that the officeholder was unable to reform his/her own household. This raises concerns about the credibility of the officeholder. Therefore, in order for parents to understand and fully appreciate their responsibilities towards their children’s upbringing and conduct, such restrictions must regretfully be placed. His Holiness added that these restrictions are not consequential to his own anger. Instead, they are a means for people to understand their responsibilities and reform themselves.

where the parents were not penalised for their children’s engagement in unbecoming activities because these parents had nothing to with it.

A child from the class requested His Holiness for his pen and His Holiness kindly granted her his pen. His Holiness observed that officials of the Jama’at should take responsibility for their respective offices and take them as great opportunities to serve. Officeholders should take on young Ahmadi men and women as their deputies in order to give them the requisite experience and training, and help them to gain confidence that their talents and abilities are being used well. In response to a question regarding martyrdom, His Holiness explained that whosoever makes a genuine effort to serve Islam, and undertakes a journey towards God, and strives to act upon the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and follows the blessed example of the Holy Prophetsa, acquires the status of a martyr. His Holiness noted that while martyrdom was highly desirable, Ahmadi men and women should strive to become veterans in service to the Jama‘at.

Referring to a Hadith that expounds the virtues of studying the human body, His Holiness advised that the health 64 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

sciences should be studied. A child from the audience asked how one should react if someone was continually dishonest and hurtful towards oneself, despite their repeatedly forgiving him or her? His Holiness explained that to tell a lie is a major sin and equates to associating partners with Allah the Exalted. You can only try and reform others; that’s all what you can do. If they refuse to improve themselves then it’s their choice.

One of the Waqf-e-Nau girls asked how one could know if one’s repentance had been accepted? The Khalifatul Masih Vaba explained that developing a strong disdain for and abhorrence towards all wrongful acts and sins is a sign for the acceptance of repentance.

A woman from the audience, explaining her plight, stated that she was a teacher and in Germany headscarves were banned for teachers. His Holiness, furnishing guidance on this matter, stated that if she had to teach to a mixed class, she should dress modestly in Islamic attire, and should wear her headscarf immediately upon leaving the classroom.

His Holiness added that she should raise the point with the school authorities that wearing a headscarf does not compromise one’s intellectual abilities.

This class finished at 8:20 PM. After this, the Khalifatul Masih Vaba led the evening prayers and graciously attended a Nikah ceremony.

His Holiness led the Fajr (early morning Prayer) at Bait-ur-Rasheed Mosque.

Despite the overnight snowfall, a large number of worshippers arrived at the Mosque to offer the morning prayer.

After attending his official duties and daily correspondence, His Holiness left for Kassel, a town located on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, Germany. A large number of devotees gathered in the Mission House compound to bid farewell to their beloved Imam. The sight of men, women and children standing on ice and snow to say goodbye to the Khalifatul Masih Vaba in the early morning hours was heart melting. It captured the curiosity of a number of bystanders, who drove into the Mosque to see why such commitment and dedication was being

Owing to the heavy snowfall, His Holiness’s journey was delayed significantly because of slow traffic on the motorway, and afternoon Prayers were offered inside the motorcade, as it was not possible to arrive at Masjid Mahmood on time. Masjid Mahmood in Kassel was inaugurated in September 2007, and it was His Holiness’s third visit to this Mosque. Upon his arrival, His Holiness led the early and late evening prayers following which he shared an audience with the worshippers. Following this brief stop, His Holiness departed for Frankfurt, where he was greeted by a large crowd of enthusiastic men, women and children who chanted slogans as His Holiness arrived. After this long journey, His Holiness returned the greetings of this warm welcome and proceeded to his residence.

10th December 2012 Khalifatul Masih Vaba spent the morning attending to his official duties after leading the early morning Prayers. His Holiness met with the Majlis Amila (Executive Council) of Khuddam (Men between the ages of 15-40 years) and Ansar (Men of 50 years of age or older) of Germany. His Holiness stressed the importance of offering Salat regularly in congregation and listening to the Friday sermons. He expressed his disappointment at some unfortunate incidents where arguments had developed during Jama’at meetings and inappropriate language was used. His Holiness observed that this was a consequence of lack of appropriate Tarbiyyat (or moral training) and the issue needed to be addressed.

Moreover, His Holiness encouraged officeholders to raise awareness in respect to making financial contributions to the Tahrik-e-Jadid scheme. He mentioned that it was more important to increase the number of contributors as opposed to the amount of the contribution itself.

He advised Ansar to increasingly take part in this blessed scheme. Khalifatul Masih Vaba said that Ahmadi teenagers should be integrated into the system of the Jama’at. He stated that it was essential to help these young men understand 66 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS | MARCH 2013

that they must look towards becoming exemplary leaders for the world to follow, rather than chasing the world themselves.

His Holiness observed that if such matters were explained and inculcated in young Ahmadi boys from an early age, they would receive the moral training needed for them to possess the aforesaid high spiritual aspirations. His Holiness reiterated the significance of investing time and energy in saving the next generation of Ahmadis. Khalifatul Masih Vaba noted that he had issued instructions to Khuddam in Canada and the UK to make badges bearing the following message, “It is not possible to reform a nation without the reformation of its youth.” Wearing such badges will increase their self-worth and broaden their understanding of real issues.

His Holiness outlined many useful ways in which Ahmadis could integrate into German society. Some of these included organising charity walks for elderly men.

His Holiness noted that such charity walks with male participants in their 80s would create a positive image of the Jama’at within the local community.

His Holiness instructed that 80% of the funds raised from these charity walks should be donated to local charities, with only 20% being given to Humanity First

(Humanity First is an international charitable trust). His Holiness encouraged a healthy competition between Ansar and Khuddam for fundraising and publicity for charity walks. His Holiness suggested that during football tournaments, people living in care homes could be invited and transport could be provided for them.

Moreover, His Holiness advised that awareness should be raised with respect to cycling and people should be encouraged to cycle.

His Holiness directed that Ahmadis from every Majlis should arrange to meet with their local Mayor and seek permission to introduce the Jama’at to the local authorities. During such meetings, efforts should be made to remove existing misconceptions about the image of Muslims and Islam. Similarly, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba advised that seminars on the teachings of The Holy Qur’an should be arranged in an effort to raise awareness.

Khalifatul Masih Vaba instructed that comprehensive training programmes should be put in place in order to train new converts from Germany, Tunisia and Serbia. These programmes should enable these converts to effectively integrate into the system of the Jama’at and mainstream Ahmadis within three years.

His Holiness advised that lectures should be arranged in various universities and delivered by young local Ahmadis. He stated that these German Ahmadis, who are perceived as locals by the community, would be able to engage more effectively with local students and thus have a stronger impact. Finally, His Holiness issued instructions for enhancing the Community’s regional leaflet campaign. He stated that this should be conducted in a reasonable and pragmatic manner, whilst remaining sensitive to and considerate of the lifestyle of the local population; the leaflets should not be distributed at a time that will cause inconvenience for people. Khalifatul Masih Vaba stressed that it was essential to establish a friendly collaboration amongst your neighbours and colleagues.

This meeting finished at 12:30 pm. This was followed by a His Holiness’s visit to the local MTA studio and offices.

He then led the afternoon Prayers. His Holiness spent the evening doing family Mulaqaat. After this, His Holiness led the evening Prayers before returning to his residence.
