Philly’s animal-control operation may finally be positioned for success—for the first time anyone can remember.

dollar business that takes operational authority on a set date isn’t an easy thing to do,” Abernathy notes. After conducting a national search, Abernathy offered ACCT Philly’s top job to Cosby, who resigned from the PSPCA in January. While Cosby has her critics—“She’s not warm and fuzzy,” says Abernathy—the principal players are all on board.

advocates are optimistic that all parties have learned from the mistakes. They say Philadelphia’s animal control is in a good place for the first time, in a long time. And they give a lot of credit to Abernathy for that.

“There’s been a lot of really positive progress in the last year, and Brian’s been wonderful to work with,” says Melissa Levy, executive director of the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), the only no-kill animal shelter in the city. “He’s been very forthcoming and open to dialogue and

to any issue we feel has been necessary. It really feels like everyone has had a seat at the table.”

Abernathy agrees that “the animaladvocacy community right now is pretty united. I’m not going to take credit for that, but I will take credit for not dividing it,” he laughs. “I started off rocky with a number of advocates, but both the advocates and I worked very hard to improve those relationships. I wanted to avoid a lot of the pitfalls we’d made … the city’s interests are protected, but at the same time the city doesn’t run over the animal-advocacy community.”

ACCT Philly will be governed by a board that includes members of animal organizations, City Council, the community and the Animal Advisory Committee, a 2-year-old group established to advise the city on animal-welfare issues. Aside from those checks and balances—seemingly a novel idea—the practical benefit of establishing a city-related nonprofit is that it allows the organization to engage in its own charitable fundraising to supplement its city funding. This is a key factor, as, at $3.6 million, Philadelphia’s animal-control budget is the largest it’s ever been—and still well below industry standard for a city of our size.

The PSPCA will retain its shelter on Erie Avenue, just over a mile away from the ACCT Philly shelter, and will continue to function as an adoption center for dogs and cats.

“We’re still focusing on working with the Animal Care & Control Team,” says Marc Peralta, the PSPCA’s COO, who is functioning as interim CEO as the group conducts a national search for a permanent replacement. “I obviously have a great working relationship with Sue, and with PAWS as well.”

PAWS’ Levy agrees. “We certainly have a long way to go in this city, and the population of animals that are in danger hasn’t diminished,” she says. “But the landscape has improved greatly and so there’s a true air of collaboration … we realize that each agency plays a different role, but they are all in this together.”

Even Garrett Elwood, founder of Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia, who has been vocally critical of both the PSPCA and the city, is positive about the new structure.

“We’re almost back to where we were before [2009], before the city screwed up.

We’re in a better place. We have a stronger foundation now,” says Elwood. He pauses, then laughs. “It’s weird.” n

The saga first came to light in 2004 after a Daily News expose revealed that the city-run animal-control agency, the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Association (PACCA), was stacked with nepotism hires who ran the shelter like a grisly sausage factory. The game-changing news story described the shelter as “an Abu Ghraib for animals, where the ones euthanized within minutes of their arrival may be the lucky ones.” Heads rolled, fresh leadership was installed, and by 2008, the PACCA was finally making headway—at which point the city abruptly decided to change course, opened the animal-control contract to bid, and awarded it to the PSPCA, which had previously performed that role in the 1980s and ’90s.

It was an odd move and, frankly, a stupid one. The whole reason the city had created the PACCA in the first place was because the PSPCA walked away from handling Philly’s animal-control duties in 2000, citing insufficient funding. But new people in charge on both sides of the equation thought things would be better this time.

Nope.

Chaos erupted right away. PSPCA CEO Howard Nelson, who had doggedly pursued the city contract, resigned six weeks into the takeover at the beginning of 2009.

He officially cited health concerns as the reason for his departure, even as longtime PSPCA board members resigned in protest of his policies and rumors swirled that he was muscled out. (Nelson remains a presence in the local animal community today as president of the Doggie Style petboutique chain.)

The sudden departure of the man with the plan left a huge, thankless, Sisyphean task of taking in more than 30,000 homeless animals a year to an inexperienced and overwhelmed PSPCA board. In short order, the operation was swamped with vaccination delays, disease outbreaks and unnecessary animal deaths. As reported

by PW in April 2009, the PSPCA lied about its euthanasia rates, killing more dogs and cats than they claimed in official reports (which were later corrected).

With the PSPCA’s mess now having laid waste to the years of slow, painstaking animal-control reform that the PACCA had undertaken since its own disaster five years earlier, the organization turned to a familiar face to help clean up again, hiring the PACCA’s former COO, Sue Cosby, as its new CEO in June 2009.

It didn’t take long for Cosby to ascertain that her big-picture mission regarding animal control wasn’t to fix the PSPCA’s handling of it, but to establish that the PSPCA was the wrong entity to oversee those duties—and to help both the organization and the city negotiate a new infrastructure for moving forward. To put it simply, she says, “Humane societies were created to protect animals, and animal control [agencies] in municipalities were created to protect people from bad animals.

Animal control didn’t fit in with the mission of PSPCA.” That strategizing dominated 2011 after, at the suggestion of former Councilman Jack Kelly, the city’s Managing Director’s Office assumed governmental authority over animal control—previously the jurisdiction of the Dept. of Public Health.

“We checked out a number of different models” for handling animal control, says Brian Abernathy, chief of staff to Managing Director Rich Negrin. “Everything from bringing it into the city directly to what we finally decided on—which was a city-related nonprofit.”

A city-related agency is any authority or quasi-public corporation that either receives appropriations from the city and is in a continuing contractual or cooperative relationship with the city, or operates under legal authority granted by city ordinance.

Examples include the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation and the Redevelopment Authority.

Now, after what has felt to Philadelphia’s animal-welfare community like interminable years of shuffling the deck, ACCT Philly is finally poised to take over. “The complexity of [setting up] a roughly four-million-

This week, the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA)—the venerable nonprofit organization that’s been fighting animal cruelty since 1867 but has been struggling for three years to dig its way out of a scandal-ridden turn in charge of Philadelphia animal control—is finally getting out of the business it had no business being in in the first place.

Since last year, the PSPCA has been working with the city to set up, and transfer those duties to, a new city-related nonprofit called the Animal Care & Control Team (ACCT Philly). ACCT Philly formally takes over the contract and the city-owned animal shelter on April 1.

Advocates hope the changeover will finally give the city a chance to save more animals and turn around Philly’s national reputation as one of the worst cities for animal control.

Conservatives from near and far showed up at the Radisson in Camp Hill, Pa., this past weekend for the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference. It was essentially two days of conservative and Republican speakers/panels on how to be more conservative and/or a better Republican. More than 800 attendees were on hand for the festivities, and all of them had terrible things to say about liberalism, health care, the Environmental Protection Agency, solar panels and Chicago. (The city.) Noted speakers included presidential candidates Rick Santorum (see Nos. 4 and 5) and Newt Gingrich (No. 9), former candidate Herman Cain (No. 7), U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey (No. 1), all GOP candidates for U.S. Senate, state reps, advocates and grassroots Tea Party organizers.

Now in its 23rd year, the PLC is the largest conservative meet-up in the state. It’s been credited in the past for introducing new ideas into the Pennsylvania Republican Party. This year was a bit different. Presidential candidates were in attendance, which means there was infinitely more hype surrounding, well, everything. It was with all that in mind I attended the PLC, and it was a blast.

Toomey was the first featured speaker of the weekend. The former president of the Club for Growth, an anti-tax political action committee, didn’t so much talk policy as he read aloud his love letter to the idea of capitalism.

In that open letter—perhaps sealed with a kiss (or more) backstage—Toomey claimed that when people say, ‘Well, capitalism isn’t perfect, but it’s the best system out there,’ those people are 100 percent wrong. Because, according to Toomey, capitalism is perfect.

It’s the greatest moral system mankind has ever created. In explaining this, he made a series of questionable statements about the president, including one about how Obama thinks capitalism has—“and I quote”—never worked. Then he rhetorically responded: “I believe that capitalism isn’t good because it works, it works because it’s good. And the big government alternatives are not wrong because they fail, they fail because they’re wrong.” Toomey made a teleprompter joke, too—while readng his speech from paper, which is totally different!

Anti-tax lobbyist Grover Norquist—who’s dictated a lot of Pennsylvania policy by having Gov. Corbett sign onto his anti-tax pledge during the 2010 election—gave a metaphor-driven speech in which he compared Democrats to bank robbers; claimed the “dependency movement” (i.e. people on welfare) is held down by liberal bureaucrats “who make 90 thousand a year managing the dependency of others, making sure none of them get jobs and become Republicans”; and said Republicans who break his ‘no new taxes’ pledge tarnish the entire party brand, similar to the way a severed rat head in soda would: “[Coca-Cola] put a lot of effort into quality control and branding, so you go into the store pick up a Coke, put it in the basket, go home.

You don’t have to look at it, read the ingredients, ask your friends what’s inside. But if you get home and you’re two-thirds the way into the Coke bottle and you look inside and there’s a rat head in your Coke bottle … you begin to wonder if you’re going to buy Coke in the future. And you go on TV, you show them the rat head and Coke has a big problem,” he said. “Republican officials who vote for tax increases are rat heads in a Coke bottle.”

3 I The Imperfect Union A panel called “Right-Sizing State Government,” led by the conservative Commonwealth Foundation President and CEO Matthew Brouillette, could have been called: “Why We Need to Drown Union Bosses (and Anyone Who’s Ever Been in a Union or Knows Someone in a Union) in Toilets.” One member of the panel, Pennsbury Township School Board Vice President Simon Campbell, was visibly angry during his speech. A Brit who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2009, Campbell invoked the Founding Fathers on several occasions in explaining his hatred of teachers’ unions and his argument that fighting unionization requires quick, sound-bite-sized arguments, not statistics. “Our side has to stop being so nice about [unions],” he said. “I mean, what we need to be doing is remembering [that we have a] God-given right to liberty.

Presidential candidate and former Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum thanked the audience for voting him out of office on Election Day 2006. “The only thing I feel toward the people of Pennsylvania is overwhelming and

profound gratitude,” he said. “The people of Pennsylvania didn’t always give me what I wanted, but they always gave me what I needed.”

5 I Slick Rick Santorum also claimed that the 2012 election is the most important of our lifetimes. Later, he changed his mind. The 2012 election, he said, is actually the most important in the history of the country.

And that Mitt Romney is “a decent man but uniquely unqualified to take on this race.” He mocked Romney’s claim that Santorum needed an act of God to win: “I don’t know about you, but I believe in acts of God.” Then he stepped off the podium to shake hands and sign autographs.

6 I Pearls Before Swine Speaking of God’s work, a very old man at the Creation Science table exhibit, who did not speak, came up to me with a phony $1,000,000 “Obama bill,” a book and a DVD, the latter of which read “Jesus was involved in politics” in black marker.

7 I Yes We Cain Herman Cain can say anything he wants, now that he’s not running for president and the media isn’t watching his every move for the inevitable gaffe. And boy is he saying some crazy stuff with basically no repercussions—in other words, he’s living the fucking dream. On Saturday, his speech’s thesis was that we are a “nation of crises.” All of which were Obama’s fault (debatable) and could be solved by Cain’s solutions—if they existed. Regarding illegal immigration, Cain said we need to secure the border—somehow. Regarding national security: “Our military is still the greatest in the world but it is now weaker because of this administration”—in some way. Regarding himself: “My wife says sometimes when I’m speaking, I sound like I’m mad. I’m not mad at y’all. I’m just passionate.” We’ll give him that.

8 I Grandma Got Run Over By Affordable (Health) Care (Act)

On Friday night, there was a huge dinner in the ballroom featuring the music of Lehigh Valley acoustic band Angry Mob, led by Nick Sabatine III. The music, he’s told media in the past, is meant to be “humorous and serious at the same time,” and to show “we’re heading down the socialist path.” All the songs were about Obama’s apparent socialistic fascism and/ or how he blames George W. Bush for all his problems and/or how the media calls the Tea Party racist and/or Obama’s overregulation of the financial sector—or something. Hilarious! One of the songs played at dinner for the attendees was called “They’re Pullin’ the Plug on Grandma,” and was a rebuke to the Affordable Care Act, which this week celebrated its two-year anniversary. The lyrics are, uh … let’s say it’s the sort of song only a mother could love: “Grandpa died of cancer/It didn’t take too long/The end of life counselor said to drag it out would be wrong/ The government gave him pain pills and skipped the chemotherapy/Because they were saving the money for me. [Chorus:] That’s why they’re pulling the plug on Grandma/You know they’re doing it for you and for me/ Because health care’s a right/That’s why they’re pulling the plug tonight/So everyone has health care for free.”

9 I Muslim Brotherhood Last week, Gingrich claimed that Obama is trying to hide ties to some of his “Muslim friends” and didn’t correct a supporter who publicly claimed the president was a radical Muslim. The attention Gingrich got from that seems to have resonated because his closing speech of the weekend could have been titled, “Obama’s not a Muslim, but … ” Some arguments included: Obama’s not a Muslim, but he “apologizes to Islamic fanatics while he is attacking the Catholic Church”; he’s not a Muslim, but he believes “that we are worthy of no respect [while] everyone else on the planet is worthy of apology, appeasement and weakness”; he’s not a Muslim, but he “bows to a Saudi King,” who, if you haven’t heard, was one of “the primary funders of, organizers of, and participants in 9/11”; he’s not a Muslim, but he won’t “put crosses back up”; he’s not a Muslim, but he “apologize[s] to people who are killing young Americans.”

10 I So, Here’s What I Learned: Modern conservatism is not based on actual ideas. That’s the most obvious takeaway from the conference, in which not one panel or speaker didn’t base his/ her argument on either dismantling, stopping, destroying or killing some government entity or an idea the president is currently floating and/ or convincing others to do so. Rather, modern conservatism is based on antiideas: specifically, that the only reason to even exist in the political realm is to stop the other side. It wasn’t always that way, by the way. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative public-policy research organization, actually came up with the individual mandate in health care, which they now call unconstitutional. George H.W. Bush was the first president to back cap-and-trade legislation when he decided he wanted to be known as the “environmental president.” But today, even Gingrich, who’s known as the GOP’s “idea man,” spent his PLC speech accusing Obama of every treasonous activity under the sun, including persuading Americans to buy the Chevy Volt—which Gingrich calls ‘un-American’ because it cannot fit a gun rack.

The reason behind all of these antiideas, of course, is that if you say no to everything, then power always stays where it already is: consolidated at the top. That’s great for these politicos, but how does it help their old pal, average Joe? Well, the GOP’s message for him is clear: Joe, without the welfare queens, community organizers and environmentalist bureaucrats in the way, you might just reach the top someday yourself. So—until then, vote Republican. ■

Walnut Street Theatre keeps up its busy schedule with tonight’s opening of playwright John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama. Set in a gritty neighborhood in Shanley’s native Boston (which is so vividly realized in the dialogue, it’s almost a character in the play), the story focuses on a Catholic parish priest (Jeffrey Coon in what may be the most challenging performance of his career) who is accused of having a sexual relationship with an African-American altar boy. The accuser is a strict and unrelenting nun named Sister Aloysius (played by the always wonderful Ellen Tobie). A rigid disciplinarian who prides herself on her moral certitude, the evidence against the priest is circumstantial but troubling. Aloysius is convinced of his guilt, but in the best productions of Doubt we’re not so sure. Savvy theater veteran John Peakes directs, making it a good bet that the Walnut’s production will allow the audience to render its own verdict regarding the priest’s guilt or innocence. J. Head The TV ads for the 1968 film Head were simply 30 seconds of a man’s head in close-up.

Even if viewers had any idea what was being sold—the inevitable Monkees movie—it still would have tanked. Their show was dead; album sales were slowing. And though their movie—a proto-Monty Python flying circus of linked sketches, written in a pot haze with director Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson—was too edgy for their audience, no counterculture type would touch a Monkees film. Too bad, as Head (named so that the producers’ next movie—i.e., Easy Rider—could be advertised as “from the people who gave you Head ”) unleashes the anger and rage roiling under the “Pre-Fab Beatles”’ controlled image, tweaking the show’s loopiness to muse bitterly on free will. SBTRKT What do Slipknot, bank-robbers, your stupid 6-year-old nephew on Halloween night and SBTRKT have in common? They all wear masks. Yeah, for whatever reason, the London musician/producer SBTRKT wears one when he performs. So if this kinda thing freaks you out, stay home tonight. Costumes aside, SBTRKT blessed us with one of the best dancepop tracks of 2011. “Wild Fire” features sci-fi/ fantasy vocals by Yukimi Nagano (the SwedishJapanese front woman of Little Dragon), and the track is built on slippery, quasi-dubstep wobbles and a neck-snapping beat. Secret Cinema’s Jay Schwartz made his bones lugging movie projectors around this burg just to show kids some moving pictures.

Twenty years on, he’s still in the show-biz racket. His latest angle is ensconcing this permanent floating cinema at the Trestle Inn, a high-class joint. This evening’s feature flick is a carny number. A typewriter jockey’s been fingered for a murder job, so he hightails it to the local carnival, a grift run by a meantempered midget. Under the big top, there’s a bunch of floozies with great gams who fleece the marks. Our boy even mixes it up in the ring and he ain’t got no glass chin. Most of the meat-puppets in this low-budget noir are unrecognizable, but squint your peepers real

Van Hunt There’s a slew of sensual and funky R&B crooners these days—Robin Thicke, John Legend and Anthony Hamilton, for example, have all carried the baton passed by Jodeci and R. Kelly. Van Hunt, however, not only covers the requisite Marvin Gaye-esque lovemaking tunes, but combines them with dancefloor hits and jagged punk rhythms. It’s an odd combination, but it works. Temple presents a screening of the awardwinning indiegogo.com-funded doc, Girls in the Band, which chronicles the unsung female jazz and big-band instrumentalists from the ’30s to today. All-girl big bands were a mighty presence in the ’30s and ’40s, yet, by the mid-’50s, women were gradually taken from behind the drums, trumpets and saxophones, leaving those who sang the only females left to be recognized or remembered. Girls traces their struggles through rare footage and concerts, including interviews with jazz bigwigs like Herbie Hancock, Geri Allen and Esperanza Spalding. Outgoing Tide

ne reason Philadelphia is a world-class theater town is that in addition to having an abundance of great actors, directors, designers and companies, it’s also home to some of the nation’s top playwrights.

One of Philly’s best dramatists, Bruce Graham, takes center stage at the Philadelphia Theatre Company with the East Coast premiere of The Outgoing Tide officially opening this week at PTC’s Suzanne Roberts Theatre. Some of My Lives Philadelphia native Rosamond Bernier has been on the planet for 95 years and she’s taken advantage of every second. She flew planes and started a small zoo in Mexico, where she was pals with artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. In 1946, she moved to Paris to be the European features editor for Vogue, and she became buds with Matisse, Picasso and Miró (see her book, Matisse, Picasso, Miró: As I Knew Them). Nine years later, she started art mag L’Oeill, and after returning to the States in the early 1970s, she became a world-renowned lecturer—she gave more than 200 talks on art, literature and life at the MET in New York. Oh, yeah, she’s also a lifetime member of the International Best Dressed List. Eating the fried stuff without ever having tried a bite of me just doesn’t seem right! But I know some folks are put off by my nakedness.

Naked? You’ve got a tasty dressing and salad to boot!

True. I’m served over a baby arugula salad with cannellini beans, capers, five types of olives, grape tomatoes, red onion and a basil lemon vinaigrette. Fresh and simple!

Your salad sounds delightful but let’s dig deeper into your past ...

Well, I was raised at sea ...

Not that deep. Tell us how you’re prepared and what makes you so tender.

I’m a Spanish octopus boiled whole—keep my head attached while cooking, please, for a more natural flavor—in water seasoned with lemon, thyme, salt, pepper, garlic and topped with wine corks. It’s a technique handed down from owner George Anni’s family.

You’re seasoned with cork?

Not exactly. The corks help to tenderize while I soak—kind of like a hot stone massage. Another trick to keep me nice and juicy is to make sure I’m fully submerged in the pot.

Spotting the face of a familiar chef, server or manager at a restaurant on a Monday night is generally a good sign that you’re in for an at-least-decent meal. Finding yourself in a dining room full of them is about as confidence-swelling as it gets.

On a recent Monday, then, as the evening wore on and the bar grew busier, the stream of local restaurant pros first seemed to be a good omen. By the end of the meal, it had become something else: Deserved.

Executive Chef George Sabatino, with his deeply satisfying menu seems populated by a dish you’d love to eat (be careful of over-ordering), is making a justifiably positive name for himself among both restaurant professionals and civilians alike.

It all starts off with a belief that technically proficient food doesn’t have to be precious to be exciting. His rabbit rillettes, for example, borne in their mason-jar chariot, are moist and tender and speak vividly of their toasted brown coriander.

But it’s the velvety lid of pear preserves, all cinnamon-y and warming, that makes it impossible to not wipe the inside of the glass clean with your bread.

Pickles also benefit from whiffs of unexpected spice.

Sabatino plays with sourness, sweetness and perfume with an alchemist’s sense of fine-tuning. Beets are punched up with coriander and bay leaf; cauliflower makes a remarkable partner for raisins and turmeric. If you’re in the mood for a de facto pickle back to wash down your whiskey, this is the

place to do it, especially considering Stateside’s generous whiskey offerings.

It’s with these more comforting dishes that Stateside is at its best. Pork liver terrine is a chunky, funky wonder, the gaminess of the organ both unabashed and primal in the best sense. Bone marrow and truffle sausage is the kind of dish that would give any self-respecting doctor nightmares. Loosely packed and rich enough to be the carnivore’s equivalent of freebasing umami rocks, it’s a great intro to marrow if you’ve never had it before.

Bourbon-brined chicken is feathery and dizzyingly moist beneath its crisp lid of skin.

There are, of course, occasional dings in the armor.

Smoked trout salad was excellent, but only for the first half-dozen bites. After that, it grew a touch too salty; the orange and blood orange segments weren’t quite enough to counter it. Unexpectedly, however, the charred broccolini with chili flakes found itself on the other end of that spectrum. Its generous dusting of citrus breadcrumbs, sneakily bright with lemon and orange zest, was a highlight, but the house-cured bacon wasn’t prominent enough.

Char-streaked and smoky-sweet Marvesta shrimp would have been better had they been removed from the grill a few seconds earlier. Still, they were quite flavorful, built on just a few good ingredients (house-made chili oil, preserved lemons, chives, shallots, a few more), and messy in the best possible way. Popping off the heads and sucking out the slurry of treats inside will leave your chin drippy and your shirt flecked with juice. As the weather warms, this is exactly the sort of dish that should fly out of the kitchen to guests drinking at the bar—I had them with an Evil Genius Good ‘n Evil Kolsch from Indiana; they were perfect together, and will be even better on an 80-degree night.

Desserts follow the same logic as the rest of the meal: Small portions and big flavors are the focal points. Pastry Chef Robert Toland’s smoked chocolate tart, all savory and deep, dances like Fred Astaire with its housemade marshmallow fluff. The ice cream sandwich, with its ginger snaps three ways and heart of frozen butterscotch mousse, begs for a final glass of porter to wash it down.

Don’t fight the temptation. Stateside seems custommade for eating a little too much, drinking a little too much, and regretting none of it. n

Cyrano de Bergerac

Recklessly creative, Tom Stoppard’s rarely produced 1974 farce, Travesties, imagines history as a series of cataclysmic moments. Mixing a few historical facts with a vivid imagination, Stoppard’s play at the McCarter Theatre Center combines the imperfect recollections of Englishman Henry Carr’s life in Zurich during World War I with Oscar Wilde’s brilliant comedy The Importance of Being Earnest . Innovatively directed by Sam Buntrock, the play brings together three of the 20th century’s most influential thinkers: Vladimir Lenin, Tristan Tzara (the founder of Dada) and the Irish writer James Joyce. Not so much a story as a collision of ideas, Buntrock’s production is dazzling to the point of distraction. Stoppard remarked that when it comes to experiencing Travesties, “everyone will have to decide for himself whether the seriousness is doomed or redeemed by the frivolity.” (J.C.R.) n

Critics try not to have expectations about shows, but truth be told I was dreading the idea of having to sit through another telling of Edmond Rostand’s ancient play Cyrano de Bergerac. To my considerable surprise, however, the Arden Theatre Company’s adaptation turns Rostand’s relic into a swashbuckling tale of romance and adventure that is smart, funny and exhilarating theater.

Spryly adapted by director Aaron Posner and local playwright Michael Hollinger (who also translates the play from its native French into very contemporary and witty English), the story follows the exploits of soldier Cyrano (Eric Hissom in his finest performance on an Arden stage) as he fights and loves his way through the streets of Paris and the battlefield at Arras in mid-17th-century France. An accomplished swordsman and eloquent poet who is as skilled with a quill as he is with a blade (the sword fights are expertly choreographed by Dale Anthony Girard), Cyrano is a daring adventurer who would be the object of every woman’s affection if not for his huge nose.

He’s also secretly in love with his distant cousin, Roxanne (Jessica Cummings), who has her heart set on the handsome Christian (the appropriately cute Luigi Sottile). A

soldier under Cyrano’s command, Christian likewise adores Roxanne but can’t find the words to express his devotion. “I’m just not very good with the language thing,” Christian says, explaining his predicament to the sympathetic Cyrano, who then volunteers to help Christian win Roxanne’s heart.

Posner’s and Hollinger’s adaptation is enormously light on its feet. Superbly condensed, they have refreshed the story’s antiquated sections while emphasizing the play’s (and by extension the title character’s) considerable panache (Rostand is often credited with inventing the word panache).

The show’s stylishness extends to every aspect of the production, including Thom Weaver’s gilded lighting design—which bathes Daniel Conway’s scenic design in glorious hues of blue and gold. As is typical with Posner (who is perhaps an even better director than writer), each facet of the production compliments another element of the show’s design. Weaver’s lighting not only enhances Conway’s design (which resembles both a theater and a place of worship) but also Devon Painter’s ravishing costume design, which wonderfully evokes an era when men out-fashioned the women (Roxanne looks lovely but her gowns are no match for the men’s giant black boots that rise to the knee or the jackets that are topped off with feather-sprouting chapeaus that would make a peacock jealous).

A swiftly moving juggernaut of a play that is equal parts adventure and romance, Cyrano is the rare production that will satisfy any theatergoer regardless of age or gender and easily ranks as one of the season’s most welcome surprises. n

You, Me, We, She at Fleisher/Ollman Gallery Featuring the work of 19 contemporary artists and artist groups who use photography, video, sculpture, publication and performance, You, Me, We, She explores how women organize, depict and define themselves.

Julia Sherman’s glass-mounted photographs lyricize a disturbing moment of denied representation. Photographing the tinny, crackled surfaces of acid-doused mirrors in a Manhattan convent, Sherman documents the perversely beautiful visual results of an attempt by nuns to root out their own vanity.

While Sherman’s “Un-Reflective” series of photographs glance off the surface, Fawn Krieger’s “Architectural Organs” burrows deep inside the body. Arranged in a grid on lumber scavenged from a demolished Quaker meeting house, Krieger’s unfired, petal-pink ceramic sculptures suggest an inventory of internal organs.

A number of pieces play with gender and its performative aspects. Francine Spiegle’s large format photograph, “Untitled (3),” documents one of her recent performances— an abject cocktail of squashed food and suggestive gunk that riffs on the vernacular of horror films and porn in the name of subverting feminine stereotypes. Employing a markedly different register, Jennifer Levonian’s “Rebellious Bird” uses paperdoll animation to tell the story of a female Civil War re-enactor who impersonates a transgender soldier. The narrative twists and turns and Levonians’s vivid watercolors lend this quietly revolutionary story of historical drag a dissonant, homespun feel.

On the subject of passing for the gender you hope to be, a prim embroidery in “Rebellious Bird” offers this ingenious advice: “If you cannot convince them, confuse them.”

Levonian’s creed functions as an ad hoc motto for the exhibition. Although Nathan Pankratz works with acrylic paint, his panels have the distinct feel of collages. The tension between the two is arresting. It’s a lovely, cross-media confusion kept afloat by the languid intensity of the colors in Pankratz’s 17 paintings and four collages.

Pankratz intentionally courts such aquatic references: the titular Peruvian river invoked in Over the Urabamba’s title ripples its murky currents through each canvas. In “CMYK,” an uninterrupted tract of squeegeed brown paint snakes its way around the canvas while in “Fold,” elements of collage break in to arrest the lazy downward flow of paint with sharply cut, horizontally painted planes. In both, paint that at first mimics the murky brown of river water churned with sludge thins to reveal mossy greens and luminous pinks.

Aside from “Page,” where strips of tape have been left on the canvas to form a triangle, Pankratz’s process is opaque. Collaged elements might look like paper but are, in fact, carefully lifted strips of paint. Part of the pleasure of looking at the work emerges from this indecipherable but utterly compelling scavenger hunt.

Although Pankratz writes in a statement that he hopes visitors will “glimpse moments of the sublime via landscape as in Caspar David Freidrich” (a 19th-century artist whose paintings are considered the hallmark of German Romanticism), his muddy rivers seem less sublime than phenomenological. They insist on a personal, visual experience. Instead of buffeting us to mass euphoria on the foamy spray, Pankratz’s paintings drag us down into the undertow, where we must each slip and slide in our own way. n Through March 31. Six unusually beautiful comedies.

Nothing Sacred (1937): Because humor thrives on relaxed improvisation and timing, you don’t see too many comedies that fret much over the other elements of filmmaking: lighting, camerawork, etc. But not everyone is so cavalier about technique. There’s sly skill in the “invisible” direction of many classic comedies, although workhorse William A. Wellman went one better with this cynical, largely Ben Hecht-scripted screwball: He shot it in still-nascent Technicolor, an extravagance typically reserved for prestige pictures.

There’s a fascinating war here between technique and material, exacerbated by how no print today, not even the restoration just released on disc by Kino, can duplicate the film’s once-splendorous colors.

Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter (1957): Frank Tashlin was an animator before he turned to live action; he didn’t really change his style. His films with actual human beings are crass, bold and plastic, his stars (including Jerry Lewis) outsized. His highmark remains his second with busty living cartoon Jayne Mansfield (after The Girl Can’t Help It), a satire as visually striking as it is scabrous.

Playtime (1967): A silent comedian who arose well into the talkie era, Jacques Tati remains comedy’s great stylist, every frame meticulously fussed-over with the obsession of a classic painter.

Young Frankenstein (1974): The film positively nails the look and feel of Universal Horror. And this from a director who, with The Producers, couldn’t even direct.

Love and Death (1975): For his last “early, funny” film, and itching to be serio-comic, Woody Allen hired no less than Belgian cinematographer Ghislain Cloquet (Au Hasard Balthazar, The Young Girls of Rochefort ), all so his comedy would look gorgeous. It’s an idea Woody would explore further with Manhattan, although he’s been subsequently known to waste D.P. greats (Vilmos Zsigmond, Melinda and Melinda; Harris Savides, Whatever Works). n Monty Python and the Holy Grail

baby-sat in Shoot ‘Em Up, tried to pass himself off as an ineffectual family man in the altogether regrettable Derailed, and then fumbled with single fatherhood in The Boys Are Back. And even though everybody else has, let us not forget Owen’s turn as the outraged father of a teen girl targeted by an Internet sex-predator in director David Schwimmer’s never-quite-released Trust.

Owen’s lone character trait in Intruders is that he really loves his 12-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell)—who has been given the last name “Farrow” in what I can only assume is some sort of inside joke that doesn’t land. She’s found a child’s half-written short story hidden inside of a tree (the first of about a thousand visual tropes that director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo openly shoplifts from Guillermo Del Toro) that tells the tale of a nocturnal predator known as Hollow Face.

Bearing a possibly actionable similarity to the Dementors from the Harry Potter pictures, Hollow Face lacks a visage of his own, and thus haunts children’s bedrooms late at night looking for a face to rip off and make his own.

Sure enough, as soon as young Mia recites the tale in her English class, this fantasy becomes reality, with this exceedingly slow-moving, not-particularly-frightening creature turning up in closets after bedtime.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975): The rest of Monty Python grumbled when Terrys Gilliam and Jones—who had adopted reins as directors of their first proper narrative film outing—decided to labor as much attention on look as they did on comic material.

Along with being funny, this is a gorgeously realistic look at the Middle Ages—grimy, gloomy, muddy and miserable. And are the bloody armor duel’s a nod to Robert Bresson’s Lancelot du Lac ? Maybe!

Grade: BReview by Matt Prigge The Israeli drama Footnote, which lost to A Separation in this year’s Foreign Language Oscar category, concerns professors engaged in Talmudic research. It’s the smallest department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, infamous for its uncompromising methods and general stubbornness, even within the annals of academia. The film’s real subject, however, is as equally rare in cinema: A rivalry between father and son based not on earth-quaking drama but rather something as small and pissy as ego.

The opening minutes of Joseph Cedar’s latest finds the camera gradually zeroing in on Professor Eliezer Shkolnik (Shlomo Bar’aba), an aging philologist, as his son, Uriel (Lior Ashkenazi, Late Marriage), receives the accolades that have eluded him his entire career. Eliezer is not happy for his spawn’s achievement; you can all but see the fumes emanating from his body. He’s the kind of academic other academics hate; “only four people in the world know what he’s doing,” it’s said of his work, which has never approached a coherent conclusion.

When Eliezer abruptly receives a call informing him he’s the laureate of the coveted Israel Prize—for which he has competed, pointlessly, for 20 years—it seems too good to be true. And it is: A clerical catastrofuck has ensued and the true recipient is, of course, the far more successful Uriel. Suddenly, the task falls to Uriel to either destroy the spirit of the father who offers him nothing but bitter jealousy, or maintain the ruse and destroy his own career.

Cedar pitches Footnote as a comedy with a dramatic foundation, starting with the casting of Bar’aba, a comic actor returning after a 20-year hiatus, whose every fiber screams curmudgeon. There’s something bleakly funny about a father resenting his son for being more successful at the same profession, especially once Eliezer uses his newfound attention primarily to character-assassinate him and his modern methods. At its best, Footnote deserves comparison with, of all filmmakers, Bobcat Goldthwait, whose work treads upon similarly under-explored dark alleys of human relations. On the other side is its finale, which mistakes an open ending for something other than a sudden failure of imagination. n

Crazy Horse

Grade: B+ Review by Matt Prigge

Crazy Horse, a documentary about strippers, is one of the most beautiful films you’ll see this year. Beauty isn’t the word that immediately springs to mind when thinking of nonfiction films, particularly ones made in the wonderfully obdurate method of Frederick Wiseman. With five decades and 39 features under his belt, the nonfiction legend has stayed resolute to an unobtrusive, purely observational shooting style; his subjects uniformly say they never know he’s there.

Yet Wiseman has always been adamant about distinguishing his methods from mere “fly-on-the-wall” filmmaking. He’s against mere objectivity, believing reality exists to be manipulated into art. (A notion that differs from the Mike Daisey style of simply lying.)

His latter-day work has even strived for a pictorial beauty his classic, grittier works (Titicut Follies, High School ) by necessity avoided. With Boxing Gym, he shot in strikingly cramped spaces with B&W video. In La Danse and Crazy Horse, both about Parisian dancers, it’s the element of performance that summons his lurking stylist.

Granted, the majority of Crazy Horse is classic Wiseman: an exposition-free hangout that offers the usual Wiseman-esque view of an institution as a precarious balance, in this case between art and commerce. Set at the Crazy Horse, Paris’ most esteemed nude cabaret, it’s a mix of performances and rehearsals, menial labor and tense meetings.

Every now and then, it stops dead to preserve on record the joint’s elaborate numbers.

Boasting bold colors, these performances fall somewhere between art and kitsch: a space ballet with dancers wearing little beyond helmets; blocks of women in ’60s go-go silhouettes; body parts teasingly reflected in a horizontal mirror; a woman, nude save a pube-shield, caught in a pas de deux with a wandering spotlight.

It’s here that Wiseman is no longer a fly on the wall but intent on capturing the performance from the ideal angle. He even includes a shot, late in, that’s simply a sea of bare asses, gorgeously lit to resemble sand dunes in the moonlight—the people we’ve spent time with now reduced to mere objects.

It’s the kind of moment most would write off as too abstract, but Wiseman knows that documentaries aren’t journalism. They’re cinema. n

He’s Not the Boss of Me A contrary opinion concerning the mythicization of Bruce Springsteen.

ruce Springsteen. The Boss. Blue Collar Rock King. He’s just a Jersey boy done good after years of working on the docks to make ends meet, just a common man breaking his ass to get by, who struck it lucky singing about his girl, his hometown and his Glory Days.

My floppy, white ass.

I’ve been fuming over the popularity of this faux working-class bozo for the better part of the last decade, and now, in what has to be the peak of the mountain of his current resurgence, I bring my unpopular opinion to you.

As someone who has worked in shitty warehouses, print shops and glass factories for the bulk of my life, I can tell you, it’s no fun. In fact, it sucks. Badly. And to paint over the grim reality of that life with a romantic brush is insulting.

The only people, I’ve found, who romanticize the up-at-dawn, back-breaking bluecollar lifestyle are people who’ve never lived it.

at parties I wasn’t invited to who lovvvvve Bruce because he’s “the realest” artist they or any one of their other freelance web designer friends have ever heard.

This Everyman image Springsteen has cultivated over the years—my god, how did he pull it off? His first record came out when he was 23. Twenty-three. Unless he was working in a coal mine at age 7, he knows very little about the kind of broke-down toil of which he croons so sincerely.

Still, I get it: You can’t blame Springsteen for selling goods to a public eager to buy them. There is a market, and someone has to provide for it.

Did I say “market”? I did. Make no mistake, Springsteen’s image, from top down—what he wears, what he sings about—is a marketing choice. Every breath is calculated, every move researched and deployed with precision. He’s no different than Lady Gaga marketing herself to the fashion industry or Coldplay to feminine hygiene products. The

purity you’ve placed upon him is a myth.

He’s been perceived as such an angel for so long, it seems odd even to question it. So people don’t. There’s a whole new generation coming up who blindly bathe in the light of the Cult of Bruce without even questioning whether, for instance, in Ticketmaster’s controversial attempt to cut down on Springsteen scalpers by only selling nontransferable electronic tickets, the man himself actually tried to help his fans escape this lose-lose scenario.

It’s this new generation of Springsteen fans who are the most annoying. They look at the musical landscape and see vapidity. They see Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. They see Chris Brown, Ke$ha and Katy Perry. They want to disassociate with the airheads who call this kind of music their own. So they adopt Springsteen as a signifier of their own validity, their own worth. To listen to Springsteen at an early age is to distance yourself from your bubblegum-listening peers. They see

substance in Springsteen, so they strap him on as if he were a shield against vacuousness.

And so Bruce is now more popular than ever, because he’s playing to two markets.

He’s got the lifers who have grown up with him, who continue to hear him played on a never-ending loop on WMMR and WXPN— plus a new generation of whiners who think listening to him makes them less whiney by association.

Right now, Springsteen is everywhere; he cannot be escaped. He’s got a new (atrocious) album out, Wrecking Ball. He was the keynote speaker at South By Southwest. He’s got a goddamn exhibit at the National Constitution Center. And, this month, there are two Bruce tribute bands playing here—one at Johnny Brenda’s, one at the christening of Xfinity Live!—on top of the man’s own two shows at the Wells Fargo Center on the 28th and 29th.

No small feat for a guy who hasn’t done anything artistically challenging since putting out his best work some 30 years ago.

Look, we all need heroes and people to idolize. I’m no different. I need figures to cling to in these tough times too—to find some solace in grand, larger-than-life escapism. I can’t deny the power of “Born To Run.” I just wish more people were willing to admit “Working on a Dream” is faux-populist horse shit. And don’t even get me started on “We Take Care of Our Own.” Springsteen isn’t terrible enough to demonize, but he isn’t great enough to canonize, either. He’s the Tim Tebow of music: not very good, but different enough from the rest to stand out. He’s a piece of toilet paper clinging to the bottom of American culture’s shoe.

And because he’s remained stuck there so long, we’ve attached undeserved meaning to him.

He’s a rock musician, not The Boss.

And anyway, bosses are assholes. n
