to that true punk life because they didn’t live it is extreme. However, Hoffman had me laughing my ass off with this narrative about his neighbor. “My neighbor has the look, I guess. She’s got monochromatic unfinished-looking tattoos, she wears all black, and does her hair like Debbie Harry. But a week after she moved in, she left a note demanding we respect quiet hours. No dancing late at night, no music at all, and step delicately in the stairs if you can. I didn’t think that was very punk of her.” It’s not. What that is is something I readily refer to as “woke hipster,” another demographic you can find all across this city as well. Oftentimes, sadly, there’s a confusion between the two. I guess what I’m getting at is that people who pay homage to a great time in music history have a look that varies all over the spectrum. In the case of punk, I guarantee you’ll find as many J. Crew button down wearers (myself included) as you would people wearing perfectly distressed leather jackets, with band pins of The Germs, MC5 and NOFX affixed to them. I mean, shit, I’ve never painted my fingernails black and I love all three.

I think living in Philadelphia too and having places like the TLA and Trocadero foster the punk scene even after its heyday as a mecca for the sound made it just as much of the culture as anything else. There’s something about having to “be” or “look” a certain way to be considered a type that I never got down with. Black is burlesque At least it is on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Franky Bradley’s as part of a Black History Month tribute featuring black and brown burlesque dancers and drag artists. We gotta say we’re pretty intrigued by this twist. Anyway, it all goes down at 7:30 p.m. and is $20 for general admission, but if you want to get all fancy and get a VIP table that seats four it’ll run you about $70.
For yet another year, the City is helping residents get the most out of their tax return courtesy of some free tax filing. According to City Hall, there are an estimated 45,000 residents who qualify for but never claim Federal Earned Income Tax Credit, resulting in over $113 million in unclaimed cheddar. With that knowledge, the city has beefed up its assistance, providing 27 free tax filing service locations with IRS-certified preparers, extended hours and multilingual outreach. To see if you qualify for pro bono tax help and even more in your return, residents can text FILE to 99000, visit YouEarnedItPhilly.com, or call 215-686-9200.

As of today: Allan Domb, Derek Green, Helen Gym, Cherelle Parker, Maria Quiñones-Sánchez and Cindy Bass. City Councilman Bobby Henon was even tossed into the mix, but Henon has to beat a federal indictment real quick. If he can beat his corruption case, many believe Henon has a shot.

So this makes little sense to us, but sadly, because it’s Philly, it doesn’t arrive as a shock. A Philadelphia Police detective has been charged with assault and presenting false statements about an arrest he made back in 2018. Officer Keith White claims he was assaulted by an arrestee, busting his mouth up and having lacerations elsewhere, but video surveillance shows that the suspect did none of that, but that while in pursuit, White tripped and hit his face on the sidewalk. Based on White’s statement, they had this guy initially run up on Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, and Reckless Endangerment.

PUNK
OR NAH? Philly’s punk, unlike those who call themselves punk
BY G.D. HOFFMAN
“Anything newer than an iPhone 5 is decidedly not punk. Unless it has a cracked screen, maybe.”
FEBRUARY 6 - 13, 2020 | PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY
P
hiladelphia is one of the great American punk cities. Not because of its history – unless you think convening the Continental Congress to write the Constitution was punk (it sort of was). And not because the emergence of punk rock 200 years later had anything to do with Philly. That story is set elsewhere. No, Philly is punk right fucking now. But let’s back up. Remember that episode of “Freaks and Geeks” where Daniel Desario (played by James Franco) tries to be punk to impress a punk girl? She tells him, “You know what punkers don’t do? Call themselves punkers.” That fit the period it was set in, Michigan around 1980. Don’t remember it? That’s OK, it was broadcast 20 years ago. NBC ran the show in its 1999-2000 season and then canceled it about two-thirds into the 18-episode run. Then it became a cult hit on DVD and almost everyone connected to the show ended up getting famous. Around the time “Freaks and Geeks” was initially failing to attract an audience on analog television, I saw Henry Rollins give a talk on the college lecture circuit. Yes, punk rock’s very own drunk uncle (he’s famously straightedge now, but nevertheless has always been exceedingly chatty) was already telling it like it was to kids born around the time his scene was culturally relevant. The most memora-
ble takeaway was how he spoke of those early shows, saying any three or four people in the room could have been the band. Not because everyone at the show was a musician, but because they were all punks and the music was almost beside the point. Maybe five years later, I was in LA trying to make it in the movie business and my friend said I should make a documentary about the burgeoning punk scene going on there. Burgeoning? Seemed like it was 20 years past done. Joe Strummer was dead and Steve Jones was hosting a local throwback radio program. But I agreed to make a music video for him, and so I went to a few of his shows. Unlike in Rollins’ time, these shows were more or less empty, populated sparsely by dudes in other bands waiting to play that night and maybe a couple of their friends standing around. Sure, there was some slam dancing, but it felt almost retro in an otherwise spacious room. Like a theme party. So now Philly, well over a decade on. Maybe more, but based on some of the people seen walking around our neighborhoods here, you might think there’s a portal at 48th and Baltimore connected to 1977 Manchester. Or maybe it’s at 4th and Bainbridge and connected to the East Village in 1983. Either way, looking at some of Philly’s punks is as if “The Decline of Western Civilization” skipped over the past 40 years. Were these people always punks? Most
of them don’t look old enough to remember the high times. My neighbor has the look, I guess. She’s got monochromatic unfinished-looking tattoos, she wears all black, and does her hair like Debbie Harry. But a week after she moved in, she left a note demanding we respect quiet hours. No dancing late at night, no music at all, and step delicately in the stairs if you can. I didn’t think that was very punk of her. What would Fat Mike do? Then I found out my neighbor also has a white-collar corporate job to go along with her two accessory dogs. Pomeranian and chihuahua are not punk breeds, by the way. If you’re punk and want a small dog, obviously dachshund is the way to go, or poodle if you give it the right haircut (see Elvira’s pooch). Anyway, she also has a subscription to US Weekly, and gets her groceries delivered from Whole Foods by Amazon. She eats vegan and wears leather. I don’t think a true punk can own a car manufactured less than 15 years ago. And forget about a fucking iPhone. At least not a new one. Anything newer than an iPhone 5 is decidedly not punk. Unless it has a cracked screen, maybe. But really, data plans are not punk. Flip phones and knowing where the fuck the show is and how to get there without GPS navigation, now that’s punk. Especially if you do it while smoking real cigarettes. Harsh

And they don’t drink La Croix unless it’s mixed with vodka. They’ve never even heard of Whiteclaw. The neighbor also put out some potted plants, which I’d say is punk neutral, but she stuck little signs into their soil that said YOU HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL. I’m not sure if that was supposed to be a message from the plants to her or from her to the plants. But anyway, no you don’t. If there’s one thing you do not have complete control over, it’s nature. And more to the point, punk is about anarchy and chaos, right? So what the fuck, Philly? You can have all the tattoos and piercings you want, but if you’ve got all your teeth then you’re not very punk. If you work in finance or care about real estate, you’re not punk. That’s the thing though: Philly is punk as fuck. Throwing snowballs at Santa Claus is punk. Gritty is punk. The sports scene in Philly is ridiculously punk, even if the fashions don’t cross over. And all that aside, Philly right now is just punk. The preferred media outlet of punk is the zine, and zine culture is thriving right now in Philly. And maybe more so, sticker art. Vibrant, alive, rebellious, anti-establishment draw-whatever-the-fuck-youwant and stick it wherever the fuck you want. That’s punk. Taking a pic of your slap and then posting it to Instagram, eh, not too punk but we’ll let it slide. Is it punk to use dating apps? I don’t know. I matched with a couple on an app that’s sort of for swingers (Tinder) who said they were into punk rock, tattoos and dogs, but they lived in the burbs. I messaged them asking what’s punk about living in Norristown. No reply, but that’s OK, because I can tell you: nothing. Paying a mortgage on a house in the suburbs, yeah, not punk. But hey, Bam Margera was from West Chester. Yeah, but wasn’t that the joke? He took all his Hollywood money and “Jackass” fame and made his show (MTV’s “Viva La Bam”) about fucking around in his boring as shit, hell-ifit’s-even-hardly-punk hometown. Listen, I know The Misfits are playing together again, but there’s nothing punk about a reunion tour, just ask Darby Crash. That’s sort of the bend, though, because the oldschool punks want to see these bands, but they’re generally not current or relevant in a meaningful way anymore. So is punk mostly a nostalgia thing now? If so, dressing like a roadie for The Ramones these days is kinda silly. However, if punk is about action and inyour-face raw emotion, then it doesn’t make sense to do it for money. Punk shows don’t fit in arenas with surcharged tickets at will
call. There’s always been a DIY quality to punk aesthetics anyway. And if it’s about an attitude that’s between style and spirit – well that’s the question. In a time where authenticity is an illusion, where do we find merit? You know that recent viral video of a punk show trashing a Denny’s? What stands out to me were all the kids just standing back recording video on their phones instead of getting into the moment. I don’t see punk as a spectator sport. Maybe Glen Friedman would disagree, but I believe he’d say taking pictures is not the same as just fucking being there. Punk is people. It does not rely on algorithms to tell you what to watch, what listen to, what to read, how to shop. Punks run out of toilet paper and then scrounge up enough change to buy one roll at a time from a bodega. It’s just not punk to get new shit tickets delivered by drone. SEE PUNK, PAGE 8

As I wandered around December’s Punk Rock Flea Market at The Armory on 23rd Street, I wondered who the punks were: the buyers or the sellers? “What attracts me to the punk aesthetic is that it defies the norm,” said Marissa Santiago, an artisan who takes vintage housewares and gives them new life with a modern touch. “The punk scene welcomes all the misfits!” she continued. “It Image | Wikimedia Commons embodies and embraces the strange, unusual, dark, and macabre. Punk rock is not just about the music or the clothes, it’s about not conforming to society and bringing like-minded and creative people together.” I like that. And I generally agree, except that punks seem to judge others by how punk they look. For a subculture defined by anti-conformist values, there appears to be a fairly strict uniform assigned to its ranks. Unless you get crazy at shows, or make wild videos, or fuck with capitalism in some way, what makes punk punk without the look? Santiago explained her creative process like this, “We take forgotten items, like your grandmother’s china, and give it a new and vulgar twist. It allows me to up-cycle antiques and give them a second life in this generation.” She does this mostly by printing provocative messages on the service, like an ornate glass candy dish with the word COKE burned into it in stylized lettering. Or a delicate tea set emboldened by thick, black titles like QUEEN and BITCH and BOSS. I love this stuff. It’s hilarious and high-quality; beyond kitsch. And I like to imagine hosting a tea party with one of these sets, gathering a mixed group of people who feel marginalized even by their own demographic counterparts and intersectional equivalents. The sort of party where it’s both sincere and ironic, because poor people having high tea is so much more punk than privileged people
PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY slumming around underground, seeking the taste of adrenaline in brief but destitute expressions of immediate joy. OK, so apparently the punk thing to do is ask someone with a mohawk if she/he/they has seen any fliers for cool hardcore shows coming up at Nacho House or something any time soon. But that’s not me. Instead, I sniff around online. And there are few places more punk in Philly or anywhere else than Cousin Danny’s. Built into the side of an old house opposite the El on the north side of Market Street, it’s a cut above a subterranean basement venue and a hair below a classy establishment. However, the first thing I notice when we arrive is a woman at the bar asking to taste the jug wine before committing to a cup of it. But upstairs there’s a chick with a shaggy bleached mullet wearing a transparent crop top and no bra, which gives me a sense we’re in the right place. Then she spends most of the time fidgeting with her phone in that tragically familiar, decidedly not punk pose, with chin to chest and wrists on tits. Right place, but it must have been the wrong time? The scene on this unseasonably warm January night was mostly hip kids, refreshingly geeky dudes and pretty cute laissez faire fashionistas. Local hardcore scream punk quartet Soul Glo gave the hungry pit a reason to circle the fire, with frontman Pierce Jordan down in it most of the time. Before them, Brooklyn-based trio Maneka played a heavy psychedelic punk rock sound, larger than their parts. Whether any or all of these music lovers choose to dress the part full-time, you know, because they work from home for a software conglomerate, hey who cares? Like Ru Paul says, it’s all drag anyway. Pick the wardrobe that works for you. Everything is a costume. Just be yourself. That’s punk.

5 Questions: The Jungle Giants Out of the inferno, onto the stage BY PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY STAFF
A
ustralia has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. Out-of-control fires have ravaged the country. Come Feb. 9, though, Australia will be in the news here for much better reasons. The Jungle Giants, wildly popular in their home country and making big news on their current tour, will be at Johnny Brenda’s. SEE GIANTS, PAGE 10

GIANTS, FROM PAGE 9 The four-piece band has sold out tours across its home country and seen more than 150 million streams to date and counting. Together they’ve released three LPs, “Learn to Exist” (2013), “Speakerzoid” (2015) and “Quiet Ferocity” (2017), with new music to come. “Quiet Ferocity” produced the ARIA-certified Platinum single “Feel The Way I Do,” as well as three ARIA-certified Gold singles: “Used To Be In Love,” “Bad Dream” and “On Your Way Down.” The Jungle Giants are vocalist/guitarist Sam Hales, lead guitarist Cesira Aitken, bassist Andrew Dooris and drummer Keelan Bijker. Produced entirely by Hales, their third album saw The Jungle Giants land at the top of multiple Best of 2017 lists, complete two mammoth sold-out national tours, and deliver electric sets at a raft of festivals, including Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival and many more around the world, including the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Malaysia and Indonesia. PW recently caught up with Dooris to talk about the group and it’s upcoming Philly show. We’ve read that all four of you attended the same high school in Brisbane. Talk a little about how the band came together, and is it a good thing or bad thing you’ve known each other for so long? Yep, that’s right, we were actually in competing bands at school. Sam and Cesira in one, and Keelan and I in another. Every year there was a battle of the bands, and we each took turns winning for a few years, until our band chastised our bass player to the point of leaving (the irony that I would become a bass player is not lost on me). At that point, Sam started playing guitar and writing songs, then left school. Shortly after, he approached Sira to start a band, then me, and I suggested Keelan to play drums (someone I’ve known since I was 7; now 20 years). Doing music professionally is pretty infamously unstable, so the fact we’ve been able to do what we have for nearly 10 years now makes me think that our shared history has been a benefit. We don’t have long memories and we’ve always created a family culture within our band. We’re four of our favourite people on the planet, and we’ve always got our mind firmly on the future. Vogue said that your live show describes the group’s name as it features “rhythmic layering and huge indie pop riffs.” How did the name come about?
Did your music prompt the name, did the name drive your music, or is it all just a coincidence? Coincidence. The name came from a panicked string of text messages when Sam went to the mastering session for the first batch of songs (which ended up being the first EP). We didn’t realize we had to have a name at that point. Luckily, there were a few names going around. Initially, it was going to be Sam Hales and The Jungle Giants, but on the spot, Sam decided he wanted it to be a proper band. The other front runner was The Bears in the Attic, thankful he didn’t choose that and thankful that Sam chose us to stick around. From rather humble beginnings, you’ve gone on to appear on the same stage as legendary acts such as Pearl Jam, your music has had more than 150 million streams, and you’re touring the world. When you were first putting it all together, did you imagine this kind of success? Why do you think you’ve achieved so much? When you’re a dumb kid learning how to play your instrument, you imagine everything. Every musician you know, successful or not, has power-slid down the hallway air-guitaring and screamed songs in the shower. You have to have dreams and imagination to accomplish anything. Just as everyone starting out has dreams, everyone also has doubts, and I guess it’s about consistently making decisions that keep the dream alive and challenge your doubts. I think our band has been able to do that individually and collectively. Also, Sam is talented as heck. The man was just made to make music, so that helps a lot. So what will your fans see when they show up at Johnny Brenda’s on Feb. 9? Four Australians thankful to get out of the blazing inferno and into the cold. For real though, it’s high energy, so hydrate yourself, send a text to your Mum and call in sick to work. What’s next for The Jungle Giants? Where do you want to be in five years? This is just where the dreams start, but it’s bad luck to say. The only thing for certain is all of us together with a Tommy’s margarita listening to the latest thing Sam has created.

he word “romantic,” all images of candles and roses aside, means an idealized view of reality. It means that it’s the most heightened version of something, the way that it should be or never will be or is going to become someday. In Philadelphia, romantic things are scarce. It’s relatively easy to live here, which means that although the risk of failure is low, so is the chance of sweeping success. This city is rarely a setting for grand stories, which means its residents rarely identify as protagonists in their own tale. No tropes, no expectations of transcendence. But at McGlinchey’s at 15th and Locust, the romantic lives. If you’re one of the regulars who shows up on a nightly, weekly, or monthly basis, you can be the protagonist in your own story, the person who is at some point in a journey to something better or worse. Some have been coming for up to 20 years, since before they were of legal drinking age. If they don’t sit in the same seat each time they’re there then they usually sit in the same area, the one that allows them to literally be seen in the light they want to be seen in. From far away, It’s easy to wonder what attracts the regulars each night. This is not a bar to bring someone to if you want to impress them. It’s not made for Instagram, for reasons beyond the notoriously spotty WiFi. As one the few dozen smoking bars remaining in Philly, McGlinchey’s is a beacon for smokers, though a source of complaints about clothes and hair that reek for those who aren’t. But it makes sense when it’s time to pay. It is cheap, suspiciously so, enough for almost anyone to afford to make a frequent habit of patronizing. he Jayplayers come from humble beginnings. Their first rehearsals in 2013 in Central Pennsylvania were in a local park – there was just something about singing outside, in summertime, for no one in particular, that speaks to the natural ease of their collective relationship with music, they said. From there, the group’s popularity grew. Over the past six years, not only has their collection of songs grown into multiple records, but they have also gained great notoriety for their hundreds of live performances. Most recently, they debuted at such nationally recognized festivals as the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Kutztown Folk Festival and MusikFest, as well as receiving the 2018 PHL Live Center Stage Country/Folk music award from the Philadelphia City Council.
MUSIC
PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY The group just released its latest single, “I Still Love You.” Their songwriting is unassumingly authentic, derived from a shared, somewhat unconscious viewpoint. It seems their process was one in the same – to not really have a process; to write without intention, merely recording song ideas as they overcame their minds. The Americana/Roots Rock act, based around the songwriting of Keeley McCue and Chris Weidensaul, has developed from an acoustic duo into a full electric band, which resulted in their debut LP “Glitter & Wine” (2016) and sophomore EP, “The Jayplayers: Little Bit Country,” which was recorded in the renowned MilkBoy Studios in Philadelphia and released worldwide in February 2018 across all digital platforms (iTunes, Spotify etc.). The Jayplayers include Keeley McCue, vocals; Chris Weidensaul, vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica; Tyler Kollinok, drums; and Chris Koehler, bass. PW recently caught up to talk about the group’s success and its latest release. Talk a little about how the band started and has evolved – from its beginning in Central Pennsylvania in 2013 to winning last year’s PHLlive Center Stage Music Award from the Philadelphia City Council in the Country/Folk category. The Jayplayers have been together for over
six years now, but music has been a part of our individual lives long before that. From very young ages, we were drawn to it like an old friend, there to turn to whenever and however we needed it. The passion for making music – great, timeless music – is rooted deeply in each of us. It’s the driving factor that allows our band to grow immensely and hopefully infinitely. We’ve come a long way since those first rehearsals in 2013 – adding members, writing dozens of songs, performing hundreds of times, and throughout it all developing a sound that is uniquely The Jayplayers. And we really had settled into this sound just about the time that we entered Philadelphia City Council’s PHLlive Center Stage Music Awards in 2018. Our sophomore EP, “Little Bit Country,” had been released at the beginning of that year, so winning this award for the Country/Folk category was such welcome validation of the musical path we had taken. You have a new single, “I Still Love You,” coming out this month. Talk a little about how that song came about. How can people get it? As with most of our songs, Keeley and Chris co-wrote the lyrics and melody of “I Still Love You” before bringing it to the rest of the

JAYPLAYERS, FROM PAGE 15 band, who helped create the instrumentation and flesh out the final song structure. Often times, as is the case here, we don’t have a direct inspiration to point to, for it’s rather an intangible collection of experiences that take form lyrically/melodically. After many rehearsals and some time allowing it to grow onstage, we recorded “I Still Love You” (Keeley McCue – vocals; Chris Weidensaul – vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, tambourine; Tyler Kollinok – drums; Chris Koehler – bass; Adam Rabenold – keyboard, organ) at Seventh Wave Studios in Palmyra, Pa. It was then brought to life by Randy Lane, who mixed and mastered this track to perfectly encapsulate our sound. We are so excited to share this new single with everyone, and it is available to download/ stream on all digital platforms (iTunes, Spotify etc). Connect with us at www.thejayplayers. com or @TheJayplayers on all social media for further news about this song and more new music coming soon! Why did the group go from an acoustic duo to a full-on electric band? How has that changed your music? In 2016, in the effort to record our debut LP, “Glitter & Wine,” we added Tyler Kollinok (drums) and Michael Broda (bass) into the mix. After finishing that record, we toured it in the tri-state area and blossomed into the full band format people now know. Over the past four years, a couple rotations of this lineup has occurred, but the core songwriting effort of Keeley and Chris remains. The Jayplayers began around that joint song-writing effort and it remains central to the band’s musical identity to this day. But, as to be expected, in adding more instruments into the mix, our sound has grown significant-
ly since expanding from an acoustic duo into a full-on electric Americana/Roots Rock band format. What can people expect when they see you perform live? Are there any upcoming dates you’d like to tell folks about? Performing live is such a special and energizing experience, fueled by an unfiltered connection with the audience. We bring exactly what we are to the stage – our music and our musicianship in the best form to date. We aim to let our music speak for itself as much as possible, so we pack as many songs into a set as we can so there isn’t much witty banter in between – as that is what the people have come for, isn’t it, to get lost in the music with us. Currently, we are still building our 2020 schedule, so stay up-to-date on when we may be coming to your area at www.thejayplayers.com/shows. What does the future hold for The Jayplayers? Where do you see yourself in a year? In five years? We are rehearsing, writing, recording, and/ or performing consistently as we love the music-making process in its entirety and are wholeheartedly committed to this career. So what’s next is expansion in every direction – traveling to play more legendary stages, performing at renowned festivals near and far, steadily releasing new music, and above all else, continuing to hone our skills and sound. In a year, we hope to be gaining more traction with radio play and placements for our newly released songs. In five, we would love to be performing on more legendary stages and have as many releases as years behind us, sustained by the continued support of our growing number of fans.

If you have both human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, DOVATO can cause serious side effects, including: • Resistant HBV infection. Your healthcare provider will test you for HBV infection before you start treatment with DOVATO. If you have HIV-1 and hepatitis B, the hepatitis B virus can change (mutate) during your treatment with DOVATO and become harder to treat (resistant). It is not known if DOVATO is safe and effective in people who have HIV-1 and HBV infection. • Worsening of HBV infection. If you have HIV-1 and HBV infection, your HBV may get worse (flare-up) if you stop taking DOVATO. A “flare-up” is when your HBV infection suddenly returns in a worse way than before. Worsening liver disease can be serious and may lead to death. ° Do not run out of DOVATO. Refill your prescription or talk to your healthcare provider before your DOVATO is all gone. ° Do not stop DOVATO without first talking to your healthcare provider. If you stop taking DOVATO, your healthcare provider will need to check your health often and do blood tests regularly for several months to check your liver. What is DOVATO? DOVATO is a prescription medicine that is used without other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults who have not received antiretroviral medicines in the past, and without known resistance to the medicines dolutegravir or lamivudine. HIV-1 is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It is not known if DOVATO is safe and effective in children. Who should not take DOVATO? Do Not Take DOVATO if You: • have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine that contains dolutegravir or lamivudine. • take dofetilide. What should I tell my healthcare provider before using DOVATO? Tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you: • have or have had liver problems, including hepatitis B or C infection. • have kidney problems. • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. One of the medicines in DOVATO (dolutegravir) may harm your unborn baby. ° Your healthcare provider may prescribe a different medicine than DOVATO if you are planning to become pregnant or if pregnancy is confirmed in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. ° If you can become pregnant, your healthcare provider will perform a pregnancy test before you start treatment with DOVATO. ° If you can become pregnant, you should consistently use effective birth control (contraception) during treatment with DOVATO. ° Tell your healthcare provider right away if you are planning to become pregnant, you become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant during treatment with DOVATO. • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed if you take DOVATO. ° You should not breastfeed if you have HIV-1 because of the risk of passing HIV-1 to your baby. ° One of the medicines in DOVATO (lamivudine) passes into your breastmilk. ° Talk with your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby.

Millennials and their damn soda
OF OUR
CITY
THE SHOUT OUT
To the Editor,
– Mark Polito | South Philadelphia
FEBRUARY 6 - 13, 2020 | PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY
YOUR THOUGHTS
Praise for the real men
Editor’s note: This letter has been edited for brevity and tone.
The soda tax hurts the people who drink it and need their daily dose of future diabetic problems which will ensure much-needed medical help due to a very poor diet. Again the millennials and wage earners will be expected to pay for their lack of concern for their health. They do not shop at Whole Foods, Sprouts or other quality food stores including Acme and ShopRite, yet the shotgun-proof windows installed in the high-salt processed food emporiums in most “distressed areas” are always packed. Also a big shout out to [City Councilman] Kenyatta Johnson, his wonderful other half, Kenny Gamble and also his other half. They care not for soda drinkers but for the $80,000 a year the millennials make. It’s about money. The Puerto Rican, Indian, Asian and Mexican immigrants rely on strength in numbers, work, marriage, then they have children. Ironically, like the millennials they want their children to go to quality and safer schools like BOK. Mr. Hite is just being “politically correct” to protect himself and collect his pension. Research the problems that South Philly High School had with racial issues brought on by the children that the millennials and immigrants don’t want their children associating with. Kids from homes where grandma is getting older and dying and the future teenage moms are preparing for another child “born in the ghetto” Elvis. Miss Sanchez knows her people and most Latins are hard workers and are economic assets to this city. Send like-minded children who want to learn and have someone at home who cares, feed quality healthy food at lunch! This is an uphill battle which I feel is a losing one. Every Sunday the news is filled with black-onblack crimes, family dysfunction and violence. The only true solution is birth control. Slow down and get less students and less pressure on teachers from the burbs, young Mary Poppins lookalikes who are young and still idealistic, while the young black teachers are in shock due to a patronizing system that allows low academic standards to continue due again to political sensitivity. They too see the obstacles involved. In this age of Trump, learning and knowledge are needed more than ever, for he is ignorance personified.

To the Editor, I just finished reading your from-the-editor piece, “Gregg’s kids” ... Nice job with that, Kerith! You grew up in what was, way back when, my “suburbs.” I’m an original “North Philly Willie” from Fairhill. My brothers, our pals and I would walk over a mile north to climb trees, go swimming, or play touch football – on actual grass – in Hunting Park! We too had it tough as nails during the 1960s and 1970s, but certain teachers, scoutmasters and coaches did for us what Gregg Downer did with you. And we not only survived, but thrived. Thank you for the “shout-out” you just gave to all the real men who formed us otherwise wayward youths into better human beings. – George Shotzbarger, Esquire (Retired Assistant D.A.) | Philadelphia

Your turn: Have you picked a candidate to back? Who do you think will win in November? Send your thoughts to voices@philadelphiaweekly.com
You gotta own it To the Editor, I read Kerith Gabriel’s article on Kobe Bryant’s coach and I gotta say it takes a lot of balls to say you were a fuck up. I was a fuck up too, so mad respect to you my guy, but I don’t think you can blame it on being a black boy in a white world. Take ownership and realize that you were young and dumb but you figured your life out. I went to Murrell Dobbins High School back in the ‘80s and we got into a lot of fights and a lot of them I started, but now I’m here in my 50s with a good job, kids, grandkids and a wife I love. I didn’t think I’d have any of that when I was young, dumb and full of ...you know. Take care of yourself and thanks for sharing your story. Love what y’all are doing with that paper too. I get it at my job and it really looks great. Keep up the work, young brotha. – M.B. Wallace | Germantown

To the Editor,
VOICES OF OUR CITY
Drug ads vital to Americans’ health
Analysts at the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office recently scored Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s drug pricing bill, H.R. 3. The CBO estimates the bill would reduce revenue at America’s pharmaceutical companies between $0.5 trillion and $1 trillion over the next decade, dramatically reducing innovation and preventing the creation of important new medicines. Proponents of Pelosi’s plan appear unfazed. Many have used this news to contend that if drug companies simply scale back spending on television commercials and other direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising, they would make up for losses imposed by Pelosi’s plan. Such suggestions disregard the math and trivialize the importance of drug advertisements. First, consider the math. Drug companies’ DTC advertising spend is on the low side compared to other industries. The industry only spends about $6 billion annually on direct-to-consumer advertising to patients. That’s just 3.2 percent of the $187.5 billion in total U.S. revenue for the top 10 pharmaceutical manufacturers, and only a fraction of the up to $1 trillion in lost revenue over 10 years. By contrast, companies in the consumer-packaged goods industry spend, on average, about 24 percent of revenue on marketing, tech software spends 15 percent, and banking and finance about 8 percent. While drug companies underspend on DTC advertising compared to other industries, they overspend on research and development, about 21 percent of total revenue – more than any other industry. And it’s the revenue from the sale of those drugs that funds that R&D.
Next, consider the importance of DTC drug ads. Commercials serve a vital public health purpose by raising awareness of medical conditions that many patients might not know about. Consider the famous drug ad for the insomnia medication Rozerem. In this spot, a haggard, sleepless man has a late-night chat with Abraham Lincoln, a talking beaver, and other fantastical figures. These characters are from his dreams – and in the commercial, they explain how they’ve missed him since he stopped sleeping. Nearly two out of three American adults suffer from sleep problems, and insomnia costs the economy billions of dollars a year in lost productivity. That commercial – which went viral before we had a term for it – helped raise awareness for a new, effective sleep treatment, which came with much lower addiction risks than existing products. That’s an enormous public health win. Drug ads convey in a concise, compelling way how products may improve health. Indeed, one national survey found that drug advertising prompts about two in three viewers to take concrete action to better manage their health. Defenders of Pelosi’s bill want to lower drug prices and many think eliminating DTC advertising is a way to do that. But advertising is a way companies convey important information to consumers about products that may help them. The return on investment isn’t just to drug companies, it’s to people who act on that important medical information.

at
SAVAGE LOVE
PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY The women who danced at the Lusty Lady were behind Plexiglas walls, men pumped quarters into slots to lift partitions that allowed them to see the women, and there were private booths for solo shows. But while you saw men “at their worst” (men can and have done worse), your daughter doesn’t have to look at the men she’s performing for. Her clients – her fans, if she has a following – aren’t on camera themselves. They may send her messages, and she may interact with them via DM, but she doesn’t have to watch them jack off. And unlike a performer in a peep show, your daughter can block guys who give her the creeps or who are in any way pushy or disrespectful. But while she doesn’t have to see men leering at her or watch come drip down Plexiglass walls, she does have to worry that someone out there might be recording her sessions and posting them online. And unlike the Lusty Lady (R.I.P.), the internet is forever. But the stigma around sex work is decreasing – Elizabeth Warren recently said she’s “open to decriminalizing” sex work (a tiny step in the right direction) – and with people of all ages furiously sexting each other, we’re quickly reaching the stage where everyone has nudes out there somewhere. Pretty soon it won’t be in anyone’s interest to punish or harass people whose pics or videos go big or viral because you could be next. Something else to bear in mind: you worry that doing this kind of sex work – roughly the same kind you did – may make it impossible for your daughter to fall in love, create a family, pursue her professional goals, or even make a decent living. But you fell in love, created a family, and presumably make a good living yourself. And while it’s possible that doing this kind of work delayed achieving those goals, TCGM, you weren’t derailed or destroyed by it and your daughter doesn’t have to be either. (And is less likely to be with her mom in her corner.) Also, your daughter may not want the same things you did. Not everyone wants one committed, long-term partner, and not everyone wants kids. And while you’re understandably distressed that she isn’t doing anything with her degree at the moment, it’s possible your daughter’s ideas about what she wants to do with her life have changed since she picked a major. Working as a cam girl may give her the time and space she needs to figure out a new dream for herself. And as crazy as it sounds to some … there are women and men out there whose dream job is sex work.
Your daughter opened a door when she shared this with you, and there must be a reason she shared it with you. Hell, it’s possible she may want to be talked out of doing it. So don’t hesitate to share your experiences and perspective with her. It’s not shaming to tell her you did this kind of work and found it dehumanizing and corrosive. That’s the truth of your experience. But after you share your perspective, TCGM, listen to hers with an open mind. And as all parents of adult children know or soon learn, TCGM, your kid gets to make their own choices and quite possibly their own mistakes. And sometimes what looks like a mistake to a concerned parent turns out to be the right choice for the adult child. Q: I am a heterosexual male. My wife has been dating other men for the past year. When she started dating her first boyfriend, she told me she wasn’t ready for me to date other people but would process through it and then we could open up the relationship for me, too. After about six months, her first relationship ended and we both started looking for other partners. She found another guy pretty much right away and it took a few months before I started dating. I had a couple dates with this woman and then kissed her at the end of our second date. When I told my wife what happened, she got jealous and angry. A day later, my wife stole my phone and sent a message to the woman I’d been dating ending our relationship, and then she blocked the woman from my social media accounts and deleted her number from my phone. She broke up with her boyfriend and is insisting that our relationship is closed now. I love my wife, but I feel violated in so many different ways and I’m unsure what to do. – Married A Dictator Your wife should’ve married a cuckold – a man who wants to remain faithful to a woman who fucks around on him and dates other men – and you should’ve married a woman who isn’t a controlling, manipulative, unhinged hypocrite. Luckily for you both, MAD, a divorce that would allow each of you to find a new partner – a cuck for her, a sane person for you – is still an option.
“Your wife should’ve married a cuckold – a man who wants to remain faithful to a woman who fucks around on him and dates other men – and you should’ve married a woman who isn’t a controlling, manipulative, unhinged hypocrite.”
