TALKING PHILLY FILMS

Actor Leo Rossi discusses ‘Deep Cover’ podcast, Joe Pistone and more
I
n my last column, I interviewed legendary FBI agent Joe Pistone, who went undercover with the New York Cosa Nostra Bonanno crime family for six years and helped takedown more than a hundred mobsters in the late 1970s. In the column, Pistone spoke of his Philadelphia connections, which includes his long friendship with Leo Rossi, the TV and film actor/writer/producer who is from Northeast Philadelphia. Rossi is also the host and Joe Pistone’s partner in a podcast called “Deep Cover – The Real Donnie Brasco.” When I told Pistone that I would be interviewing Rossi, he said that I wouldn’t get in more than one question with Rossi, as he was quite a talker. Rossi, like me, I admit, is a person Italians call a “chiacchierone” – a chatterbox. I asked Rossi about the podcast. “Joe made a living out of keeping his mouth shut, and he doesn’t give it up too easy, so a trust factor came in as we started,” Rossi said. “Joe got looser, and we have laughs, and I think we hit on some pretty big topics. We have one podcast coming up about when Joe quit the FBI. It is compelling. He is the real deal. When he starts talking, everybody leans in.

How about ‘10th & Wolf,’ I asked, down and have some fun with this, even though it is serious material. He told me, ‘You and they said yeah, that would be alright. “I’ve had some luck getting movies made know how long you’d last undercover? ture is a bitch.” Rossi spoke of his current screenplay for an upcoming crime and boxing film based on the life of the late South Philly middleweight boxing champ Joey Giardello (who was my 9th street neighbor years ago). The film is called “Canvas Dancer.” “I met with Joey’s son Stevie, and we sat down, and he started telling me this story. His father’s real name was Carmine Tileili. He bought someone’s birth certificate when he was getting in trouble in Brooklyn. “Before Mike Tyson, Joey Giardello was the bad boy of boxing. He was a rounder, and he was in the slammer before he fell in love with a girl from South Philly.” I look forward to seeing the film. Rossi has portrayed a lot of street guy criminals and street guy cop characters, and he portrays these characters very well. Although he said he was more of an athlete growing up in Philly, he knew street guys. “I retained all that stuff.” You can listen to “Deep Cover – The Real Donnie Brasco” on Spotify, Apple and other outlets, and the podcast is free. PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY Pen & Pencil update I may have forever ribbed the after-hours Pen & Pencil Club in the past; for its catering to journalists who never had their own money for booze or their own bags of coke back in the day; for the old hot dog water. Name it. But our friend Bobbi Booker is its current board president and our other friend, Raphael Tiberino, was made its GM and bar manager in the wake of the near-Christmas 2019 passing of its much-loved barkeep Dan Kenney. Plus, all (well, I bet not ALL) of the old cheapskate rumpled journalists have given up cocaine. (Or at least stopped asking). So, I’ll give the new P & P some love. LOVE! Well, the nation’s oldest private daily operating press club gives Tiberino the gig, then COVID happens for however many months (and you can’t call those hot dogs “food” by any stretch of the imagination) and the private club couldn’t file for pandemic grant monies or offer togo cocktails. Then apparently part of its ceiling collapses – and just when I was ready to fall in Image | Courtesy of Raphael Tiberino love with the space. Well, luckily for the club, a quickly gathered GoFundMe raised $10,000, some insurance kicked in, and the 21st Century Booker/Tiberino-era P & P should be ready to roll, live open and in-person, come June. Which reminds me… Masked Philly: Raphael Tiberino In Icepack’s continuing saga of asking mask-donning local celebrities what they’ve been up to, beyond the pale, during C-19 – from lockdown to the current, slow re-opening and ever-questionable masking – I reached out, this week, to Raphael Tiberino. The visual artist, illustrator, muralist, co-owner with his siblings of the beloved family business, The Ellen Powell Tiberino Memorial Museum (with a hat tip to late great Joseph Tiberino) in Powelton Village and P & P bar manager, as we see above, took a step back from his new gig since COVID’s start. “I had to,” says Tiberino of postponing his Pen & Pencil gig. “Plus, I, and the rest of the family had to close the museum as well, as all museums and galleries shuttered.” Which means, the always exhibiting Tiberino had to draw within so to speak.
What he did do during C-19’s quarantine and closure, though, along with stop drinking after November 2020’s elections, was amplify the output of his illustration and painting work, and get it all onto social media outlets such as Instagram. Raph’s single most involving work – for artist and audience alike – was his dark and deeply etched portrait of George Floyd, drawn the day after his murder. “It was just instinct to get that portrait up, to heal, to inspire.” Considering the fam’s work regarding social justice murals at The Ellen and littered throughout the city, Raph’s Floyd portrait was part of his own history as well as that of Black and White Americas’. “I put it back up when the Chauvin trial started. People are drawn to it. That was my work for the community beyond my usual for the pandemic quarantine.” The mask? Raphael has no problem wearing one (an artist, all those paints, resins and polymers) especially since six of his friends (“Healthy, young guys, too”) died of COVID-19, and that he himself had COVID. “I didn’t even know I had it. I was just run down after being out among too many people, celebrating, last November. It wasn’t that big of a deal, physically, for me; but I know how many other lives it brought down.” Along with getting ready to re-open P & P (“looking at mid-June”), Tiberino, while remaining online and exhibiting, is continuing to place his George Floyd online (check the newest issue of BlackEnterprise.com) as well as planning several new work exhibitions for autumn and winter. “Plus, getting The Ellen up and running – the museum and the garden – is going to happen. After Joe’s passing, the family went their own way,” said Tiberino of muralist Gabe, art director Latif and ceramicist-sculptor Ellen. “My sister, brothers and I did our own thing, our own work – we always did that, and always will. But, that was necessary for each, and all, of us to do our thing. To grow, you know. And I think by autumn, we’ll be ready for the museum and the garden to come together, for everything to come together.”

New Alternative to Adult Diapers and Catheters Sets Men Free
‘Super-comfortable,’ offers 24 hour leak-free security, available to many at little to no out-of-pocket cost! CHICAGO — If you’re one of the four million American men who secretly wear adult diapers, or use a catheter to deal with your urinary incontinence or weak bladder, here’s some lifechanging news. There’s a new non-catheter alternative available that not only helps keep men dry and leak-free for up to 24 consecutive hours, but the best part is, if you’re covered by Medicare, Medicaid, TriCare, and some select insurance plans, you can try this high-tech ‘fluid collection’ breakthrough at little to no out-of-pocket cost.
omy, directing his flow to a discreet collection pouch. It’s comfortable, unnoticeable to others, and secure. It’s this trusted sense of security that assistant registered nurse and caregiver, Mark Nagle, NAR, calls, “wonderful.”

“It doesn’t cause skin irritation, and my patients never have to worry about red spots or sores. My patient doesn’t wear disposable briefs anymore, and I am happy to report that we always have a dry bed and a dry pair of pants.” For John C., Men’s Liberty is a “lifesaver.”
Carefree Comfort
“The most degrading thing that my husband can think of is being in a diaper,” says Tina J. “Men’s Liberty to the rescue. We attended our granddaughter’s graduation in comfort and without the fear. You couldn’t tell he had it on, which was a big concern for him.”
Invisible Under Clothing
Men’s Liberty is made of a gentle, skinfriendly material called hydrocolloid, a medicalgrade adhesive that softly stretches and moves with a man as he changes position. Unlike absorbents that cause diaper rash, yeast infections, and dermatitis, Men’s Liberty attaches to the tip of a man’s anat-
“The feeling of not wanting to associate with others because you fear loss of control, or fear what others might think of you, goes away.” “I think that Liberty is well named in that it liberates the individual to a sense of being able to perform normal tasks in a normal way.”
For years, John dealt with urinary incontinence by wearing an indwelling catheter. When he discovered Men’s Liberty, his life changed. “It’s allowed me to maintain my lifestyle with my work and my family.”
Death of Diapers?
Will this urinary break-through sink the $7 billion adult diaper industry? Many experts think so. Because adult diapers are not covered by Medicare, the estimated four million men who use them daily pay as much as $300 a month in out of pocket costs. Tucson resident, Sam T., wore them for years. “I remember the continued moisture in my crotch would give me a yeast infection, not a good thing,” he says. Sam wore four or five absorbents during the day, and two or
A Grand Experiment
The $7B adult diaper industry is facing a catastrophic drop in revenue thanks to a revolutionary development in men’s urological care.
three at night. “All of that went away when I found Men’s Liberty,” he smiles.
Enjoy Life Again
“I can wear Men’s Liberty for 24 hours with minimal interruption,” says Sam, “even after drinking coffee!” “Movies, meetings and social affairs are all possible now. Our granddaughter graduated with honors from high school last week,” says the beaming grandfather. “I sat beside my wife, applauding!” During the sizzling hot Arizona summers, you’ll always find Sam in a pair of cargo shorts. “I buy my shorts with an 11-inch inseam, which is perfect for Men’s Liberty,” he says.
Discreet and Unnoticed
“The drain nozzle is hidden right above the hemline. So, I can stand at the urinal, like other guys, and discreetly drain the pouch, and no one notices a thing. In ten seconds, I’m good to go!” Managing urinary
incontinence in a medical setting can be challenging. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are frequently caused by catheter use. If untreated, UTIs can cause a secondary infection, often resulting in hospitalization. That’s why Men’s Liberty is recommended by leading healthcare professionals.
Doctor’s Choice
Urologist Alden Cockburn, MD, has personally tried Men’s Liberty and now recommends it to his patients. “I tried it myself during one of the testing phases and it’s very comfortable; certainly, more comfortable than the alternatives,” he says. “It allows men to have freedom of movement.” “I think Liberty is a good name because it does afford men the liberty of a lifestyle that was not afforded to them before.” When you feel in control of your sense of well-being,” adds Dr. Cockburn, “you feel more able to accomplish tasks that you previously wanted to bypass.”
Curious Sam T. in Tucson wanted to see how much liquid Men’s Liberty would hold. “I can’t claim to be an expert research analyst,” laughs Sam, “but here is what I learned.” Sam first filled a fresh Liberty unit with water and learned that it securely held one full cup. On the top of his shelf, Sam found a few pairs of disposable briefs with built-in absorbent pads. To his surprise, these held a whopping two cups of liquid, which may not be helpful, according to Sam. “I saw an ad on the internet,” says Sam, “that showed some guy wearing these briefs, walking around with a big smile on his face.” “I thought to myself, yeah... if I had two cups of urine sloshing around my crotch, I wouldn’t be smiling, and I would sure be walking ‘funny.’” “Also,” says Sam, “the slightest pressure on an absorbent will cause it to leak. Men’s Liberty doesn’t leak and sure won’t cause “funny” walking,” he says.
Four Million Used!
More than 4 million Men’s Liberty units have been used, with ZERO attributable UTIs or seri-
ous skin injuries. That comes as no surprise to the thousands of healthcare professionals who recommend Men’s Liberty everyday. Dr. Fernando Borges. “I recommend Men’s Liberty to patients with urinary incontinence because of the low incidents of trauma, erosion, and infection.”
Covered by Medicare
Men’s Liberty is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, TriCare, and over 3,000 insurance plans. Compared to paying over $300 a month for diapers, you could be getting Men’s Liberty for little or no out-of- pocket cost! The Men’s Liberty Team will take care of contacting your doctor and all the paperwork for your insurance. No overwhelming insurance forms... it’s that easy!

TOUR TO PHILADELPHIA Lesbian feminist Skylar Gwynn will stop in Philadelphia on June 8 as part of her nationwide motorcycle tour to raise awareness of the redefinition of the word “woman” and of medical practices aimed disproportinately at lesbian and gay youth under the banner of “gender affirmation.” Gwynn, a 61-year-old grandmother of four, describes her tour, also known as “The Ride: A Woman’s Rebellion,” as “an act of love for women and children.” She and her fellow traveller, Joy, will visit 20 cities over a period of two months, meeting with activists and holding protests in each city. “One of the main reasons I am doing this is that I have been gender non-conforming from the day I was born. When I was a child, I played with a Johnny Red Eagle rifle. I played with G.I. Joes. What I’ve found is that girls like me are being told that they have to be boys, and frankly, that is disgusting and homophobic.” Of the use of off-label medications to prevent puberty in gender dysphoric children, Gwynn says, “Puberty is not a disease. It is a natural part of the body’s growth, and when
you stop puberty, you destroy these children.” During her stop in Philadelphia, Gwynn will be gathering with feminists and with parents of adolescents who have been “affirmed” by their schools, without parental consent, as members of the opposite sex. Gwynn, a survivor of domestic violence and multiple rapes, came out as a lesbian late in life – at age 58, to be exact. After coming out, she was devastated to find she was shunned and targeted by activists in her own community for her refusal to accept that men can be lesbians. “I realized,” says Gwynn, “that as a dyke on a bike, I was excluded from Dykes on Bikes.” Nevertheless, Gwynn rides. She bought her latest bike, a Kawasaki Vulcan 900, with money she received as damages following a car accident two years ago. She still has a damaged back and screws in her knee and foot. Gwynn, whose ride begins in Orlando, is eager to connect with as many concerned Philadelphia-area feminists, parents, and politicians as possible. She can be contacted through the web form on her site, therideawomansrebellion.weebly.com.

Ephemera, new paintings by Jean Plough
Ephemera comes from the Greek word ephemeros. It means something that exists for a short period of time, or occurs only once. These paintings represent something fleeting and elusive. They refer to momentary experiences that lasted for only a limited time. Plough’s technique was playful, and allowed her to use existing shapes and textures to suggest others. DR. TIMAREE SCHMIT
r en
oject:
PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY and family. My favorite thing about the show was that these were fully fledged characters who cried, and loved one another, and were ambitious, and outspoken, and flawed, but willing to learn at the same time. They were me. And I had never got to see me on television or in the media before. At times I felt like something was wrong with me because I never was never reflected in the media I consumed. Patrick-Ian Polk, Darryl Stephens and “Noah’s Arc” truly changed my life. PW: What do you hope to accomplish with this latest project? KJ: World peace, of course! In all seriousness, I’m hoping this video will spark conversations about addressing homophobia and toxic masculinity. It’s so ingrained in the fabric of our lives that many people often don’t realize they are making comments that can affect their loved ones. I recently read a tweet from Dana White that really touched my heart. Dana wrote “I wanted to do ballet as a kid. My parents refused. I cheered briefly in high school. My parents made me quit. I was a high school theatre geek who had potential to study seriously. My parents didn’t support. I’m still gay. Denying me joy and expression didn’t change that.” So many boys, especially Black boys, are placed in a box and told that if you don’t do [abc] like [xyz] then you aren’t a real man or you’re less than. And we really need to address and get rid of that notion! PW: Is there specific meaning to the timing of this project? I noticed that it’s Pride month and the anniversary of the uprisings for Black lives in America. Is that intentional? KJ: Yes! Absolutely! I wanted to drop this project in June because having Pride in the same month as Juneteenth is a huge celebration for both of my identities. I also felt that since this project speaks to Black and Queer identities simultaneously, it would mean a lot to be having these conversations in June while
SEX WITH TIMAREE they’re most on everyone’s mind. PW: You have done a lot of projects that showcase queer and trans people of color, especially Black performers. Is that representation important to you? KJ: Yes absolutely! When I step into a room, I am unapologetically Black and Queer and I want the art I create to be an extension of that. More importantly, I’m interested in showing the side of Blackness and Queerness that we rarely see: the healing, the joy, the community. There’s too much Black content that focuses on slavery and racism and there’s too much queer content that focuses on sexual assault and HIV/AIDS. Those topics are a part of our history but we are so much more than that. We deserve to see ourselves reflected holistically in the art we consume. Let’s normalize Black Queer joy and love. PW: If you had an unlimited budget for one production, what Image | Courtesy of AaronMichael Sobers would you do with it? KJ: Such a great question! I really want to do a Black Queer series of existing musicals. From “Company and Cinderella,” to “Anything Goes” and “Wicked,” I believe that those stories have such important lessons and iconic moments and I don’t think it’s fair that only cisgender heterosexual White people ever get to experience them. A Black Queer and Trans Broadway is what I’m aiming for! PW: Anything else people should know? KJ: I’m out here doing the work! I self-produce all of my own projects and although it is a struggle financially, I love the art I get to create. Please support Black art, Queer artists, and people who dare to live in a world where they are told their passion isn’t “important.” Artists are the real superheroes.
