That song is agonizing enough during the Christmas window, there is ABSOLUTELY no reason to play it before that. Now that I think about it, it’s probably not Philly radio stations that I’m mad at. Hatin’ on the holidays T
he holiday season in Philadelphia is a festive time. Well, depending on whom you ask. On Thanksgiving, we ventured around Center City and asked people what they felt was the good, bad and ugly of the holiday season in the City of Brotherly Love. Let’s just say, not all the answers were as neighborly as one might’ve expected for a time that’s supposed to bring about the best in all of us. We found in some cases, it brings out the opposite in people. Thankfully, we ran into the following Philadelphians to call some of this behavior out.
‘It’s unrecognizable’ I know this is going to make me sound like a Scrooge, but I hate being around City Hall during the holidays. I take the EL into work and get off at City Hall, and from right around the week before Thanksgiving through New Years it’s so annoying. I have to cut through the courtyard [at City Hall] to get to my office on Market Street and I’m always running into someone not paying attention, kids running around all willy nilly, trying to dodge not photobombing some tourists’ picture with City Hall in the background or some selfie. It’s unrecognizable around here. I know I just have to live with it, but it just irks me, I don’t know why. – Jen’ae Russell | West Philadelphia

No lie, we just came from Macy’s the other day and my mom was looking for these bed sheets for my son’s queen-sized bed. We found some and we noticed this woman was standing kind of close to us. I just figured she was being polite and waited until we were done deciding if those were the ones we wanted. We decided to look for other ones, but before we could even put it back on the shelf, this chick basically grabs it out of my mom’s hand. I said, ‘excuse, you,’ and she was all like ‘you said you didn’t want it,’ grabbed it and just walked away. I was in shock at her level. Now see the old me would’ve set it off on this woman, but the mature mom in me let it go. A peek inside the Love City Satanists, Philadelphia’s rapidly growing lovers of all things Lucifer BY PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY STAFF

t’s not for everyone. In fact, it’s not even for most people. “But if someone has a sense of adventure and a penchant for the blasphemous… and wants to learn something while having fun with good people, this [was] probably the event to attend.” That last part came from “Brother Black,” a South-Philly based organizer for the Love City Satanists in reference to their recent Get Lucifer event, a night of Satanic education, ritual, and of course, partying. The event featured a pair of huge names in the world of Satanism: Lucien Greaves and Shiva Honey, known for their work with The Satanic Temple and for appearing in the 2019
documentary “Hail Satan?” It was one of the biggest events Phillybased Satanists have held, and that’s saying a lot, because contrary to what some may believe – Philly goes pretty hard for Satan. “We seem to be one of the fastest-growing Satanic communities in the country at the moment,” Black says, “It’s actually pretty surprising how much interest we’ve gotten in the five months we’ve been organizing. Our first meeting in July had nearly 40 attendees and since then, we’ve welcomed about 500 people to our private Greater Philadelphia Facebook group.” “It only makes sense, Philadelphia is the grittiest of cities with an obvious tradition of independence and free thought,” says Jack
Mongoose, another organizer of the Love City Satanists and the Friends of the Satanic Temple Philadelphia. Contrary to popular expectations, Satanism is not a literal belief in the devil or the support of evil. Instead, Satanism is largely about organizing in reaction to larger, more powerful institutions that are seen as oppressive. In the end, believers simply feel that Satanism is about free speech, equality and justice, but with a certain dark aesthetic flair. Brother Black says that Satan exists as “a symbol for standing against tyrannical authority and fighting for the oppressed and marginalized.” He says that more conventional religions are often used as weapons

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY against women and LGBTQ people. “The fear of Satanism is completely unfounded and rooted in media sensationalism,” he says. “If one took an honest historical inventory, there’s far more to be worried about [in] what’s going on behind the doors of the average Catholic institution than a Satanic Dance Party.” “The allegory of Adam and Eve is the perfect metaphor for our world,” agrees Mongoose. “People live under control, and are happy as long as they stay ignorant to the world around them. The devil offers them knowledge…Satan is a hero.” Modern Satanism started in 1966 with Anton LeVey and the founding of the Church of Satan. LaVey was inspired by the work of Friedrich Nietzche and Ayn Rand, and he viewed Satan as a symbol of defiance against the way Abrahamic religions (like Christianity, Judaism and Islam) suppressed humanity’s animal instincts. COS’s approach to Satanism involves a rigid doctrine of philosophy and belief in magic, and while the organization still exists, it doesn’t have regular events. Religious scholar Massimo Introvigne suggests it never had more than 2,000 members at its peak. But in 2019, Satan is having something of a moment and this time, it’s hella political. In 2013, The Satanic Temple was founded by Lucien Greaves and Malcolm Jerry. It’s a secular religion that, according to its website, has become “the primary religious Satanic organization in the world, with chapters internationally, and a number of high-profile public campaigns designed to preserve and advance secularism and individual liberties.” Exact membership numbers are not available, but 135,000 people have liked TST on Facebook and over 16,000 people are on the TST Face-

book forum. TST has gained notoriety for its legal battles against restrictive abortion laws, for fighting to put Baphomet statues next to the Ten Commandments stationed on state property, community service actions like after school reading programs and highway cleanups, and for gaining recognition as an official tax-exempt religion by the IRS. “The TST offers more than just charitable action and social change,” says Mongoose. “People need community and a sense of belonging. Being a traditional atheist is a lonely place, TST incorporates ritual and pageantry that is fun, imaginative and adds meaning to the lives of the members.” “To me, Satanism is a path of radical self-acceptance and liberation. It helps me to embrace my own power and desire,” says Shiva Honey, a founding member of The Satanic Temple Detroit and current Director of National Events for TST. “Satanic ritual has become the biggest focus of my practice and has helped me grow tremendously and heal.” She produces events for TST and leads rituals at the Satanic Temple Headquarters in Salem. Bringing Satan to Philly is something she certainly enjoys. “Every time I seem to stir up trouble,” Honey says. Previously Satanic Philadelphia hosted a Black Mass at Philly venue PhilaMoca that featured Greaves and Honey. The 2018 event garnered pushback from protesters, including a petition to the venue and mayor to cancel. “The Catholics tried to shut us down,” she says, “That’s when you know it’s a party.”

When Hale & True, a cidery and taproom, opened across the street, they asked Good King Tavern to make their small plates – spiced nuts, pickled vegetables, marinated olives. And each year around Bastille Day, a celebration of France that happens every July 14, they host a block party that welcomes all ages, especially the ages that enjoy drinking. The Good King Tavern is, after all, named after Roi Renė of Anjou, also known Good King Renė, a lover of the arts and philosophy who opened up his palace gates to have parties for villagers. For Chloe, a career in wine seems to be a part of her terroir. Though she grew up in the Philadelphia area, she spent a lot of time visiting family in France, specifically Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, with her French father, Bernard. “When I was 9 years old,” Chloe remembers, “somebody at the dinner table in France asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I said, ‘Well, I’d like to drink wine.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, great. Cool.’ Needless to say, here I am today.” Working in restaurants was, for Chloe, at first, a way to make money while at-

expand. At a time when almost half of Americans’ lives have been affected by addiction, Saint Joseph’s University has announced the formation of the Center for Addiction and Recovery Education. The center seeks to advance the understanding of issues surrounding substance use disorder and recovery, lessen addiction’s impact on society and reduce stigma on individuals recovering from addiction. Philadelphia Weekly recently caught up with the center’s inaugural director, Stephen J. Forzato, to talk about how it will confront the addiction epidemic.

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY You’ve been in the field for more than three decades and have said this issue is personal for you. Talk a little about what the establishment of CARE and its mission means to you personally. My dream was to be in law enforcement, undercover. But prior to that, I worked for a treatment service in NYC. I spent one summer during college getting people to consider treatment and bringing them physically to treatment. I remember being outside of Wall Street – they were selling everything. We would talk to them. We’d jump on the subway with them. I had a heart for these folks. Then, I got into law enforcement. The first two years of my law enforcement career, I worked at crime scenes. The one case that sits with me, to this day was a 17-year-old who was struggling with substance use disorder. He started selling to support his disease. He was bagging cocaine in his bedroom, and his mom was asleep in the other room. She woke up the next morning and found him dead in his room. This kid, he didn’t deserve to die like this. For 30 years, I met people with substance use disorder and their parents. Hundreds of cases, just like that one. When it was time for me to turn the gun, badge and handcuffs in, I still wanted to spend the rest of my life furthering programs that prevent and address addiction. What makes CARE unique? What will it do to fight the addiction crisis that isn’t being done now? Saint Joseph’s Center of Addiction and Recovery Education is unique because it is created out of the university’s Jesuit mission and philosophy of caring for the whole person and standing with those at the margins. Our Catholic identity calls on us to promote the sanctity of all life. CARE also looks at addiction and recovery holistically. While much of the media attention right now is on opioids, the larger addiction crisis (alcohol, stimulants and other substances) is going underrecognized. Part of that is a data problem. There are many ways to die from substance use disorder – car accidents, asphyxiation, liver disease – making it very difficult to track. Further, the financial burden on our health-care system from alcoholism-related illnesses far exceeds that of any other addiction. How will you measure CARE’s impact or success? How will you know it is making a difference? CARE launched a few weeks ago, so I’m currently working on our strategic plan and accompanying key performance indicators in the coming week. However, I can tell you about how I am looking at it. We want to lead the conversation about addiction and recovery. So, engagement of key stakeholders is critical – first responders; medical providers,
future doctors/prescribers and treatment specialists; human resource professionals; elected officials; universities. First on my agenda is to explore an interdisciplinary minor in addiction and recovery education. We already have a wealth of experience and work going on in this area at Saint Joseph’s. The minor will bring it together; harnessing the university’s existing resources. Saint Joseph’s prepares students for life in a way that other universities do not. We provide a roadmap for success in career, community and life. The minor will prepare students for a potential career in addiction and recovery; but also as parents, friends, managers, colleagues and future leaders. Students who are trained in this will have an exponential effect in the community by addressing issues in a variety of domains.

If you could speak directly with the individuals suffering from addiction and their families, what would you tell them about CARE and your efforts to confront the crisis? Over the course of my career, I’ve given a voice to parents and loved ones who have been affected personally by substance use disorder. I’ve met too many mothers who have lost children from an overdose. They had nowhere to turn to talk about how special their loved one was; and not what others portrayed them to be. They didn’t want the end of their lives to define their value and their life. That’s whole person. I would say to them that CARE is here to confront this issue and continue their work by honoring their voices; honoring their loved ones as whole people. Furthermore, I’ve seen these voices have a substantial impact on public policy.

Talk a little about the projected timeline of CARE. What will it look like and be doing one year from now? Five years? One year from now, Saint Joseph’s will emerge as a model for how a campus community can work together to lead the discussion about addiction and recovery on many levels – including educational programming throughout the city and region. We’re already doing so much, but I know that we’ll build on this. We will also further the academic programming around addiction and recovery. In five years, we’re going to take this model and hopefully share our learning with other universities. We want to incubate ideas and then scale them. We will be leading the discussion around addiction and recovery; addressing the stigma around these issues and have an influence in policy, community and research. We want to serve as a connector for researchers and policy makers. The research needs to be written in such a way that policy makers can benefit and implement this work.

But with this narrative for decades throughout basically every media conglomerate that’s pushing the envelope for black women to behave more masculine while at the same time having black men behaving more effeminate, unfortunately, we’re seemingly accepting this “new” way. I, for one, do not approve of that lifestyle being a heterosexual male – including a Christian. And in my personal opinion, the worst thing to be in this world – especially in this era – is a black male Christian conservative. Dangerous because of the non-conformity. But I digress... I wonder why that brotha emphasized that it’s “not that kind of a party” but wanted other men to perform that “exercise?” He could’ve just had the traditional Q&A forum regarding the $1 million and how we could better this city. But that? I prefer to stare into my woman’s orbits. Not some strange dude’s. Perhaps he’s hiding up in the “down low” closet himself and assumed most of the black men at that event were bisexual or all out gay [because] let’s face facts here … there are a numerous amount all over. Save a life, get your kid vaccinated
To the Editor,
I stand next to the bed of a child who is no longer breathing on his own. Machines are doing the work for him. To allow the machines to do their work, I give medications causing the child to remain still. I do not want him fighting the machine that is keeping him alive. We pray for another chance for this kid to walk, run and hug his parents, to live. The cause of this all? Pertussis (whooping cough). A disease that when I started my job as a registered nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit was rarely seen because most kids were vaccinated against it. Now it is plaguing our community because fewer children are being vaccinated. Children are born with immune systems that are not fully developed, which makes it easier for them to get sick. Many diseases are spread from person to person. One person from your town gets infected, now your space is contaminated. Being vaccinated means even if you are exposed to the illness you will not become sick nor will you be able to spread the germs. Protect yourself, protect others. A bill was presented in the U.S. Senate called the “Vaccine Awareness Campaign to Champion Immunization Nationally and Enhance Safety Act of 2019” (VACCINES Act). The goal of this bill is to provide the public with facts so they can make informed decisions. Community programs will provide science-backed, honest facts regarding vaccines. The hope is to increase vaccination rates before we are faced with a devastating outbreak. I understand people may think the government should not tell them how to make health decisions. As a health-care professional, I believe when an issue becomes a public health safety concern, it is time for
the government to get involved. Did you know your odds of dying in a car accident are 1 in 77? Your odds of developing a serious reaction to a vaccine are one in a million. We still get in our cars every day, there is no excuse not to vaccinate. History has shown us children will die if we stop vaccinating. According to the CDC, in 1974 80 percent of the children in Japan received the pertussis vaccine and there were zero deaths related to this disease. As rumors spread that the disease wasn’t a threat anymore, some stopped getting the vaccine. By 1979, 41 children died due to pertussis. We cannot repeat that history. Efforts to end smallpox were much more successful. This is history that we need to repeat. We destroyed the disease by continuing to vaccinate until it no longer existed. We killed the disease by not allowing it to kill us. We can do this with present diseases like measles and pertussis. Vaccinate now as a way to end the disease so your future grandchildren will never need the vaccine. It is up to us to learn from past mistakes. We need to listen to the facts given to us by the professionals. The safety and effectiveness of vaccines should not be left to social media. That is why we need the VACCINES bill to pass so we can spread the facts. Our Sen. Bob Casey is a member of the committee in which the VACCINES bill currently sits. Turning around the city’s child welfare
Amid all the despair catalogued in “The Kids Are Crying,” Courtenay Harris Bond’s excellent series about what Philadelphia Weekly editor Kerith Gabriel calls “the great mindfuck that is Philadelphia’s child welfare system,” there are the first signs of hope. That hope can’t be found in anything the Philadelphia Department of Human Services said – but in what it did not say. Although still prone to misdirection and evasion, DHS no longer is denying that Philadelphia tears apart families at the highest rate among America’s biggest cities. Instead, the Department of Human Services offers a list of initiatives to provide actual human services so children are not taken away when family poverty is confused with “neglect. If they are functioning as described – and no one should take this agency’s word for anything – they are worthy initiatives. But they have not yet accomplished much. In 2018, the most recent year for which data are available, Philadelphia children were torn from their parents 2,718 times – that’s only 170 fewer removals than the previous year. And none of these initiatives would have helped the children of Yolanda Walker-Jackson. She was forced to jump through all sorts of hoops because she smoked pot to control severe nausea while pregnant – the sort of thing white middle-class mothers can brag about in Facebook groups. When Walker-Jackson couldn’t manage all the hoops, her children were taken. She didn’t need a “parent café” or an “empowerment center” – she needed DHS to get the hell out of her life. Instead, DHS treated her children the way the Trump Administration treated children at the Mexican border – tearing them from their mother and each other and consigning them to multiple foster homes. “Now my children are traumatized for the rest of their lives …” Walker Jackson said. It’s not just common sense that supports her assessment. Study after study has found that, in the typical cases seen by workers for
agencies such as DHS, children left in their own homes fare better even than comparably-maltreated children placed in foster care. And, of course, Walker-Jackson’s children weren’t abused by her at all. That’s before we even get to the high rate of abuse in foster care itself, a rate shown by independent studies to be vastly higher than what agencies self-report. The harm doesn’t end there. All the time wasted persecuting families like Walker-Jackson’s is, in effect, stolen from finding children in real danger. That’s almost always the real reason for headline-grabbing horror stories about child abuse deaths. The DHS take-the-childand-run mentality makes all children less safe. Real change requires more than adding a few services, it requires giving up the near-absolute power DHS wields over the lives of impoverished families. DHS should follow the lead of New York City and fund high-quality family defense, in which families get a lawyer, a social worker and, often, a parent advocate who’s been through the system herself. A massive study found that this approach significantly reduced time spent in foster care – with no compromise of safety. That’s because it’s not a way to get “bad parents” off – it’s a way to craft alternatives to cookie-cutter “service plans” like those that made everything worse for Walker-Jackson’s children – and a way to tell DHS to butt out when it shouldn’t be involved with a family at all. In many cases, the federal government will now reimburse half the cost of this kind of representation. A network of such offices in Philadelphia would be real “Family Empowerment Centers.” And they would show that DHS Commissioner Cynthia Figueroa really wants to be the leader who finally turned the agency around.
