o if you werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lucky enough to score a ticket and a ďŹ&#x201A;ight to freeze your ass off in Minnesota, then you, like most of us, are gearing up for whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be quite the weekend in the Greater Philadelphia Region.

As Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve talked to multiple friends, family and colleagues about the excitement that is Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Super Bowl and the party that coincides for us courtesy of the Eagles, the question that keeps popping up, in addition to where to watch and what to eat while you watch, is who are you watching it with.

Initially, I never gave it much of a thought, but the more I have thought about it, as the game continues to get closer, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s this realization that this is a pretty legit question.

Win or lose, who you watch this game with carries an indelible memory that makes one a bit selďŹ sh. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an easy thought for most of us who have families and friends who are devout Eagles fans as you can just all throw on your kelly or midnight green gear and head out to a bar or whoever has the biggest TV and the best snacks.

But for some of us, the decision isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that easy.

In fact, this directly affects my current situation. I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to freeze my ass off courtesy of a new addition to my family that came home on NFC Championship Sunday, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OK because I want to be in the city for this one, win or lose.

But do I want to watch the Birds win the Super Bowl with the fam, comprised of a newborn, a toddler and a lowkey Patriots fan? She wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t admit it, but as a New England native, I know thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s admiration there and it stings. Or do I forgo the family courtesy of my future mother-in-law who couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care less about football, and do I and the closet Pats fan meet up with my fellow Birds family and hang on every snap and then go watch the town get painted regardless of the result?

In my last column, I told you that a special feeling for me would be to watch this with my young son, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s become quite the Eagles fan after watching the last few seasons with me. Even though he wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite understand, the feeling of sharing that moment with him would be one I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget. Or is the better option, the latter of sharing that moment with people you know have lived on every snap, every losing record, every trade that ďŹ&#x201A;opped, every coach that sped us up to slow us down, way more worth it? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know this sounds dumb, but I literally got into an argument with the wife about that,â&#x20AC;? said Steve Caffernan, whose wife Lauren is a little miffed at the notion her husband is going to leave the conďŹ nes of their Bella Vista home to watch the game at a bar with his buddies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get it and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve tried to explain it to her. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve grown up watching this team and this is as big a deal as ever. She hates football and isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t into going anywhere to watch with me, so I have to do what I have to do â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll deal with the consequences later, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not watching this game at home.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just a guy thing. Ashley Caputto from the Pennsport section of South Philly told me a similar story about why she is ditching the girlfriend this Sunday to hang with her Eagles homies for the game of the year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get it, but she respects that this is a big deal to me,â&#x20AC;? Caputto said of her longtime girlfriend, Star. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She sees this as a sporting event, but the Eagles isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just sports for me. In my family, we treat the Eagles like an extended family. Plus, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve brought her to games and she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really get into it, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just sit there and not cheer. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be around that on [Super Bowl] Sunday, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sorry.â&#x20AC;?

There are still many big questions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for example: when, where, how many, how much money â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but if Philly succeeds, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be the ďŹ rst city in the nation to do so. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re gentrifying it wrong Brandywine Realty Trustâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gargantuan development plans in West Philly (specifically, the 19104 area code, where the poverty rate sits at almost 50 percent) are slated to bring large businesses, higher real estate taxes and virtually no affordable housing. Tracking the homeless How the opioid crisis complicates the already complex effort of counting Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unsheltered population

tanding by a lean-to near Kensington and Allegheny avenues, a 29-year-old man named Alex wiped back tears as he told Megan Abrams about his road to homelessness and addiction.

On Wednesday night, Abrams, a housing co-coordinator with Prevention Point, was one of nearly 400 workers tasked with surveying and counting the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unsheltered population.

While Alex walked through chapters of his life, speaking softly of his mother, Abramsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; colleague, Wilfredo Laboy, quietly slipped some cash into his jacket pocket.

Laboy also handed the man his business card and told him what shelter he would be at in the morning if he was interested in detoxing: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Come to Prevention Point. Tell â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;em Wilfredo sent you.â&#x20AC;?

The team was out for the Point In Time

Count, an national survey effort by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to track the numbers of people living on the streets of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s major cities. While Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeless population rate is lower than its peer cities, workers say the counting effort has gotten more complicated in the epicenters of the opioid crisis such as the River Wards, making an accurate tally hard to achieve.

At midnight, volunteers dispersed from the Congregation Rodeph Shalom on Broad Street and fanned out to every corner of the city to talk to as many unsheltered people as possible about how they landed there. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to know how many people there are â&#x20AC;&#x201C; our best estimate,â&#x20AC;? said Liz Hersh, director of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OfďŹ ce of Homeless Services. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And we want to know something about them and what they need so we can match it with services and we want to know the trends: Are the numbers going up? Down? What are we seeing?â&#x20AC;?

Workers from Prevention Point, an addiction-focused nonproďŹ t contracted by the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Outreach Coordination Center, canvassed Kensington and its outskirts in the River Wards, an area that hosts the largest concentrated homeless population outside of Center City. Working alongside a volunteer who was himself experiencing homelessness, the team had a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of where the homeless population would seek shelter together or alone for the night: this ramp of that school, that corner of this park.

But the winter cold drives many indoors, they said. In a short walk through Harrowgate Park by the Tioga El stop, there was no one in sight. This presents one of the biggest hurdles that outreach coordinators face, week after week, year after year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chilly out here, you have people going into abandoned houses which we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go into for safety reasons,â&#x20AC;? Laboy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t count them.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a notable problem in places such as Kensington, where the post-industrial landscape offers a glut of abandoned buildings for temporary shelter. Moreover, outreach workers said not all who are visible on the streets want to be approached. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People might be reluctant to talk to anyone that rolls up in the middle of the night and wants to talk to them,â&#x20AC;? Abrams said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are sleeping. A lot of times if people are awake, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing what they have to do to stay well, and maybe donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel comfortable having a stranger talking to them while theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing that.â&#x20AC;?

Workers approached makeshift encampments cluttered with mattresses, tents and blankets. Discarded needles and their plastic orange caps littered the ground. Such enclaves have become more visible in Kensington since last summer, when ofďŹ cials closed the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most notorious heroin camp along the Conrail train tracks.

Hersch noted the opioid crisis has caused the surge of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness, meaning those who are living on the streets or sleeping in overnight cafes.

Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Point In Time Count found 956 unsheltered individuals, compared to 705 in 2016.

And public health ofďŹ cials fear the crisis, which has already wrought historic numbers of fatal overdoses, has yet to crest. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re worried because the opioid crisis doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to have peaked yet,â&#x20AC;? Hersh said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And of course, not everyone whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeless is an opioid user and not everyone whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an opioid user becomes homeless, but when the two come together itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really a problem.â&#x20AC;?

When Abrams and Laboy approached, many were dozing or dismissive. With prodding, some unfurled and spoke at length about their stories. But outreach volunteers are experienced in this terrain â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some 40 percent of whom, according to Hersch, have themselves experienced homelessness.

Steven Robnette, 58, was born in Texas and

moved to Philly with his family as an infant.

For more than 30 years, he said, he has been on and off the streets, mostly in the Northeast. Having lived in shelters for the last few months, he decided to volunteer and was assigned to the Kensington team. Quick-witted and donning a black knit cap, Robnette said he likes to keep active. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I came down for a couple reasons. One: I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like sitting in,â&#x20AC;? Robnette said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And two: I felt as though it was my turn to step up to the plate and give back.â&#x20AC;?

The workers in the Kensington group surmise the inďŹ&#x201A;ux of heroin and synthetic fentanyl into the neighborhoods has had a splintering effect. With more people using, capacity became an issue where it was most present. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Years ago it used to be Gurney Street where you had a bunch of people using and you knew where they were at,â&#x20AC;? Laboy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have what you have now, [people] under every bridge.â&#x20AC;?

Abrams spoke of the sensitivity needed to carry out the survey in a meaningful way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you get to a spot, you just kind of learn to read how people are reacting to you being there,â&#x20AC;? Abrams said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the respect comes from like: youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in their house â&#x20AC;Ś if people are willing to engage, great. If not, maybe another time will be better.â&#x20AC;?

Not all of their overnight tally was conducted on foot. Equipped with tablet computers, from midnight to 2:30 a.m., the team spent much of the time cruising the streets by car, counting panhandlers near convenience stores and distinguishing those hanging on corners from those living on them. Often, the workers would point out and identity people by name based on where they were lying down, or where they spotted their bags. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a rough science, counting the unsheltered.

Their total for the night, in their quadrant, was 96. Low, they said. But then again: Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeless population is on the lower end for major cities. In 2016, according to Housing and Urban Development numbers, Philly was ranked 10th in the nation for people living on the streets, with some 6,112 homeless persons, behind even smaller cities such as San Jose and Las Vegas, possibly owing to Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harsher climate.

The city does seasonal counts, too, independent of the national survey, the workers said. Those counts, especially in the warmer months, tend to come in higher.

The ďŹ nal tally wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be available for a number of weeks. But Katie Perch, Abramsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; housing co-coordinator at Prevention Point, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t optimistic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been seeing increasing numbers from already high numbers for the last few years, so I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be surprised [if the number rose],â&#x20AC;? Perch said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Of course Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also be disappointed. Because we always want to see a decrease. s 2018 rolls forward, Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top-tier male hip-hop scions are in a weird place. Meek Mill is behind bars.

Since 2016â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;SelďŹ shâ&#x20AC;? peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, Rock has favorably found his name in the mouth of Rolling Stone magazine, and, near the end of 2017, as part of XXLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Freshman Class.

Last year, he dropped a smash mixtape (â&#x20AC;&#x153;GTTM: Going Thru the Motionsâ&#x20AC;?) as well as several tracks on The Fate of the Furious soundtrack.

Now, not only is he riding high with the recent release of his debut album â&#x20AC;&#x153;Catch These Vibes,â&#x20AC;? the rapper is readying his ďŹ rst nationwide tour for February. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wild success story for a Germantown native who was raised solely by his mother (his father was murdered when Allen was 3). Rock also faced time in detention programs and prison, and spent a very brief period of his life experiencing homelessness. But none of this left a chip on his shoulder when it comes to his life or his music. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no time for any chip,â&#x20AC;? Rock said, on the morning of his homecoming concert at The Fillmore, a precursor to his â&#x20AC;&#x153;Catch These Vibesâ&#x20AC;? tour. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I received the XXL thing in particular, I got that ofďŹ cial rapper stamp,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Which was cool. After that, though, it was, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;now what are you gonna do with it?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I had to prove myself, live up to that.â&#x20AC;?

Thinking back to Germantown and the legend of naming himself an acronym for the Pastorius and Baynton street corner near where he was raised, he laughs when he considers the story behind his moniker. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t supposed to be my name. It was my Instagram name and people just ran with it as I got more followers. The name I had planned so super, super wack â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a mix of my middle name and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sprockets.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Corny.â&#x20AC;?

His ďŹ rst show as PnB Rock was in 2013: a backyard party off of the 1300 block of Front Street, sponsored by a clothing company. He found his sonic niche early on â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a love of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;90s R&B acts such as Jodeci that gives even his roughest tracks a soulful musicality â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and immediately became the local king of the R&B&Rap mixtape. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That was the music of pain,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not in terms of lovey dovey stuff and relationships, but of genuine personal struggle.

Nothing â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;take me backâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I love youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but deep emotions. I knew I could do that, that I had a good voice, and I ran with that. Especially since my material wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just about relationship stuff. It was harder.â&#x20AC;?

Out of his ďŹ ve brothers, Rock says he was the rebellious one, the one his mom had to throw out of the house when he was in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;trying to be cool and act like the old guys around meâ&#x20AC;? phase of his adolescence.

He did stints in youth detention for robberies and school ďŹ ghting. At 19, a judge

gave him 33 months in prison for drug possession, among other crimes. It was serious business, but something that Rock says he learned from â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and eventually triumphed over.

But the desperation of being homeless after his prison sentence â&#x20AC;&#x201C; brief as it was â&#x20AC;&#x201C; has left its scars on the rapper. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Me being homeless did a lot for me,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You gotta be strong and learn how to truly care for yourself. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t depend on anyone. That molded me. And donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get me wrong: a lot of people didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know I was homeless because I kept myself up. But I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where my next meal was coming from. That was me at my lowest point.â&#x20AC;?

Four years since his ďŹ rst mixtape, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bangerz,â&#x20AC;? Rock is now signed with Atlantic, the same label as Mill and Uzi. While some stars distance themselves from their early work, Rock still loves to break out his ďŹ rst limelight tracks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve changed so much and things move so fast â&#x20AC;&#x201C; evolution is a Godgiven talent â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll still do those songs tonight. People loved those songs.â&#x20AC;?

When it came to the next phase of his career, Rock claims that is a mix of method and momentum, a day-by-day fate-ďŹ lled process. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking for the next adventure.â&#x20AC;?

He says he wanted â&#x20AC;&#x153;GTTM: Going Thru the Motionsâ&#x20AC;? to be his true debut album, but that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as fate would have it. Instead, he sat down in the studio and wrote everything out, toyed with the piano and guitar (â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can play by earâ&#x20AC;?), and played with his vocal techniques until a strong and cohesive album materialized â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an unusual feat for a record with multiple producers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I knew what I wanted â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Catch These Vibesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to feel like,â&#x20AC;? he says, talking about the joyous fun of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friendsâ&#x20AC;? and the soulful social hardships of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pressureâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Issues,â&#x20AC;? the latter of which â&#x20AC;&#x153;made me feel like John Legend.â&#x20AC;?

Beyond being his recording hub for his music as well as his personal home, Philly is also where PnB Rock is honing his chops as an entrepreneur. He owns several Galaxy nightlife spaces, including the new Galaxy West on 52nd and Market Street and his Galaxy Lounge on Broad Street. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for Philly I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be here,â&#x20AC;? he says proudly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And I have always wanted to own a place like these to chill and present music.â&#x20AC;?

Is he soul-hopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest hope beyond Mills and Uzi? Can he seize his chance at mainstream stardom and also stay on the underground tip? n paper, the Beastie Boys and Beethoven are worlds apart.

But merging the two together made perfect sense to Jeff McNeil. Consumed by music by age 12, the North Philly native came up with the grand idea of mixing the instrumental of the famed rap groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Paul Revereâ&#x20AC;? with Beethovenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Symphony No. 5.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I heard all of this stuff in my head, and when I mixed it, I was so super excited about it,â&#x20AC;? he told Philly Weekly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I took it to my best friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house and he ejected the tape and he ďŹ&#x201A;ung it across the room and he said it would never work. At

North Philly native Thee Phantom made history as the first hip-hop artist to perform at the Kimmel Center. that moment, I became married to it because I wanted to show that it would work.â&#x20AC;?

Today, known as Thee Phantom, the 43-year-old has traveled with his own ensemble, the Illharmonic Orchestra, across the United States and Japan. He has built an impressive career delivering hard-hitting rhymes over live orchestration.

The group has released two albums and has performed at a list of noteworthy venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Carnegie Hall in New York. His performance at the latter garnered him title as the third hip-hop act in history to headline a show at the venue.

Phantomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion for music started in the home.

His father had an eclectic taste in music and his mother and other family members sang in choirs in Philly.

Naturally, he found himself singing hymns, too. He was encouraged to take up the ďŹ&#x201A;ute and piano.

Hip-hop came to him shortly after, when he wrote his ďŹ rst rhyme at 8 years old.

In high school, he performed with a local rap group named Triple Threat. The groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s musical style was akin to mainstream hip-hop at the time, but Phantom explained that seeing rapper Coolioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance at the 1995 Grammy Awards further sparked his drive to pursue his original vision. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coolio brought out a 30-piece orchestra and I was like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it! Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what I wanted to do,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always had in the back of my mind that this is the direction that I wanted to go.â&#x20AC;?

Phantomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career quickly became deďŹ ned by ďŹ rsts.

After putting together a demo tape, he played it for reps at the Kimmel Center and was invited to perform with accompaniment from members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, where he became the ďŹ rst hip-hop artist to perform at the venue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was truly a groundbreaking moment for us because we were ďŹ&#x201A;edgling,â&#x20AC;?

Phantom said.

But the credit is shared, in Phantomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes. Among the musicians who played with the Philadelphia Orchestra was Renard Edwards, who was among the ďŹ rst African Americans chosen to play with the orchestra in the 1970s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[He] opened doors for me 30-plus years earlier,â&#x20AC;? Phantom added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So me opening the doors for other musicians is something that I feel I need to do.â&#x20AC;?

And â&#x20AC;&#x153;playingâ&#x20AC;? it forward is something Phantom is extremely passionate about. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Looking out in the audience and seeing those faces and seeing the light bulb

come on is truly inspiring,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Today, he often receives post-performance messages from parents whose children really want to follow in his footsteps. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know the impact that seeing musicians on stage had on me,â&#x20AC;? Phantom said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Watching â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Soul Trainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and seeing the Love Unlimited Orchestra. Seeing Prince â&#x20AC;Ś seeing all of these people playing instruments that look like me on stage made it a reality.â&#x20AC;?

Phantom and his wife are also taking a proactive approach to cultivate the next generation of musicians. He explained heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s working on building a college fund and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also lecturing at universities across the country.

Ultimately, he said he would like to put together a tour of Europe and Asia and bring as many young musicians with him as possible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to try to expose them to other cultures and how they receive music,â&#x20AC;?

Phantom said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I went to Japan in 2011 and the way that they love hip-hop over there is like how we loved it back in 1988. It was truly a moving experience for me. I performed with a 10-piece Japanese orchestra and none of them knew English but they were able to play everything that I needed them to play. And that really drove home that music is the universal language.â&#x20AC;?

Looking ahead, 2018 is shaping up to be a busy year.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scheduled to perform at a sold-out show in his native city at The Rotunda on Feb. 11. He also is set to release an album entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Maniac Maestro.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my third album and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really a testament how Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve grown musically,â&#x20AC;? Phantom said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It shows every facet of music thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inspired me. Ninety-ďŹ ve percent of it is live musicianship. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a hint of gospel. hile Minnesota boasts a distinct brand of hospitality, Eagles fans arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t receiving the warmest welcome in the Twin Cities. And understandably so. We can only imagine the salt levels in Philly if we got pillared harder than that guy running on the SEPTA platform and then had to host the winning team.

On Super Bowl opening night Monday, boos abounded toward Eagles players and their fans.

(Granted, Vikings also got their share in Philly.)

Some Minnesotans have been spotted wearing T-shirts that proclaim â&#x20AC;&#x153;Go Patriots! Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a Vikingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s [sic] fan.â&#x20AC;? (Grammar errors included.)

Injured safety Chris Maragos even tweeted some conspiratorial frustration about his teammates not being able to book restaurant reservations. (Wide receiver Torrey Smith suggested Maragos make the reservation under Tom Bradyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name. But seriously, Chris, restaurants arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t snubbing their nose at your potentially

gargantuan bill just to advance a grudge.)

While surely a few Minnesotans would prefer to have a no-ďŹ&#x201A;y zone for the Birds and their fans, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s separate fact from ďŹ ction here.

A Minnesota Star Tribune reporter tweeted a picture of the Eagles sign hanging in the window of the Truth Bar in downtown Minneapolis.

(Plot twist: The Truth Bar, if that is even its real name, is not truthfully a bar at all. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a private conference room, and thus its beer-chucking threats are emptier than the Vikingsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; defensive backďŹ eld, truthfully.)

Other reports have come in of Airbnb hosts shutting down operations for visitors from Philly, expressing concerns about â&#x20AC;&#x153;post-game violence and vandalismâ&#x20AC;? from Eagles fans following the NFC championship. (Fact: The Philly police only made six arrests that night.)

But Airbnb ofďŹ cials said the reported case was an isolated incident, and told Mashable that â&#x20AC;&#x153;anything that resembles discrimination â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even football discrimination â&#x20AC;&#x201C; would not be tolerated.â&#x20AC;? OfďŹ cials added reservations from Philly users were, in fact, way up that weekend, and that any host discriminating against Eagles fans would be kicked off the platform.

The issue fans are more likely facing in the Twin Cities? Price-gouging.

AirbnbWATCH, a consumer watchdog group, released a report detailing extreme rate hikes for rentals in the Super Bowl host city.

Some nightly rates, the report said, have shot up by thousands of dollars per night stay. A normally $75-per-night two-bedroom apartment in downtown Minneapolis is now asking an egregious $5,000 per night.

But things are bitter enough on the ground without focusing on the tensions. Despite frostbite temperatures, Minneapolis has a lot to offer for those who want a break from pregame events and the like.

We spent a few hours in the Twin City listing wormhole, and I have to say itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a mixed bag next weekend. Dave Matthews Band is apparently still touring. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also an unfortunately named local band called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rapedoorâ&#x20AC;? playing at Palmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bar in Minneapolis. But if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for a party, there are a few options.

The catch? Marshals werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t doing this to beneďŹ t the locals. The explicit messaging behind â&#x20AC;&#x153;Operation Frozen Bowlâ&#x20AC;? was to apprehend Minneapolisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Most Wanted before Super Bowl tourists rolled into town â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not for, you know, the locals who have to live there all year round. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We like to minimize potential criminal activity that could go on during such a big event.â&#x20AC;?

As City Pages pointed out, this is passive middle ďŹ nger to the locals. We get that regional law enforcement wants to present themselves in a glamorous light during a national event, but Minnesotans probably wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget their pointed messaging in the long run. nounced she was indeed running as a presidential candidate. I wanted to create a piece that would meld the idea of women, money and power. When I was playing around with some old kiss-lock coin purses in the studio it came to me that they sort of looked like a vulva when I pinched the cloth/leather folds together. I stitched the folds into place and began scouring thrift shops for more purses!

Your sculpture work reminds me of Louise Bourgeois â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you choose such a wide range of materials and shapes. Can you talk to me a bit about your process? How does a sculpture idea come to you â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and how do you see Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s does the process of creating a Coin it through to completion?

Some artists whose work and words have Cunt look like? made an indelible impression on me are Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse and Kiki Smith. My own work shares in the timeless theme of the human body and all its limitations. My early stone sculpture referenced the whole body and/or form of the female torso but over the years has evolved to highlight body parts through a vocabulary of abstracted visual archetypes. The basic forms I elicit throughout my work are the drop (breast), the wound/ slit (vulva) and phallic combinations I refer to as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;shafts and glands.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I am enamored by the folds, curves, creases and textures of the body.

My process most often begins with an idea quickly jotted into my sketchbook for future reference. I try to have at least three works in process at all times so if I get stuck on one, I can turn to another till Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m unstuck. This is a practical way to keep moving forward with my work. When my daughter was a toddler I learned the value of working in small snippets of time. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing the body of work you can build with just 15 or 20 minutes a day.

It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hurt that I thrive on repetition and have developed many of my works based on a series of small works grouped as a larger installation.

Coin Cunts Artist Suzanna Scott returns to Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Paradigm Gallery with an intimate, Instagramworthy art exhibit

aradigm Gallery, located in bustling Fabric Row, is already known for housing some of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most jaw-dropping emerging art.

This week, the gallery will launch â&#x20AC;&#x153;Deemed A Canvas,â&#x20AC;? an exhibit that highlights artists who work off-canvas, resulting in a bevy of sculptures and unexpected materials. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a collaborative effort between Paradigm and HaHa magazine that will make you want to whip out your phone.

Created by ďŹ&#x201A;ipping coin purses inside out and stitching them to look like female anatomy, Scottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s art is evocative, playful, intimate and envelope-pushing all at the same time.

I spoke with Scott about her history with PA, her work as an artist, and of course, those Coin Cunts that keep on going viral on IG. Be sure to catch the exhibit at Paradigm Gallery, running through Feb. 17.

I know your life really changed when you realized you were drawn to sculpture. Can you talk about what drew you to sculpting in the first place â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and what keeps you working?

Your work deals very much with the female body and feminism â&#x20AC;&#x201C; particularly your Coin Cunts, which opened at Paradigm Gallery on Jan. 26. Can you talk to me a bit about why your work tends to go in that direction?

I have a 13-year-old daughter and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m worried about her future. Every day we are bombarded with misogynistic, racist, sexist rhetoric on so many fronts. The poison seeping down from the highest ofďŹ ce in our country is emboldening the lowest forms of humanity among us, and hate speech is rampant. I do not want my daughter to have to live in this new reality. Our lying, pussy-grabbing president has ignited a smoldering ďŹ re among feminist artists and has added many, such as myself, to their numbers. I feel helpless but I keep making art in the hope that by speaking out through my work I can in some small way help inďŹ&#x201A;uence positive change for future generations.

My ďŹ rst love was stone carving. I was drawn to the physical challenge of imposing my will on a solid block of stone. As I built maquettes/ sketches for ideas I wanted to try, I discovered What started the Coin Cunts project? How new materials. The hardest part of the process is ďŹ nding the right purses. The ďŹ rst thing I do is turn the purse inside out and play around with it to see how its material behaves. Each purse is slightly different in the way itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s folded and stitched.

Once Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve decided on the design, I stitch it into place.

The Coin Cunts come in a variety of colors â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some more neutral and flesh-toned, some more bright and popping. Can you talk about what pulled you to those color choices?

When I ďŹ rst began searching for coin purses to use in this project I was surprised at the variety of colors and materials I discovered. Once I realized I could acquire a melanin rainbow I began collecting as many different tones as I could ďŹ nd. Each Coin Cunt is distinct just as every human with a vulva is unique.

You also have a piece called Thumbs Down which seems almost to be a response to Coin Cunts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and are those condoms? What inspired that piece?

Yes, Thumbs Down is deďŹ nitely a yin-yang to the Coin Cunts. I do see how they resemble used condoms but in actuality I cut the thumbs off womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vintage kidskin gloves.

The thumbs were installed as a grouping on the wall using T-pins. Quite simply, the piece is a not-so-subtle statement on the ďŹ&#x201A;accid performance of our pussy-grabber-in-chief.

You were born in PA, so it seems like you have pretty strong ties here. Can you talk a little bit about your relationship to PA and Philadelphia? Which artists are inspiring you right now?

I was born right outside of Philadelphia in Huntingdon Valley. According to my parents, I took my ďŹ rst steps in the Asian Art galleries at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. We moved out of state while I was still a toddler but returned for a year and lived in Olney when I was 12. Incidentally, my period began that year so I ďŹ nd it ďŹ tting to exhibit the Coin Cunts in the city where I became quite aware of my own vulva. Q TWITTER: @SARAHROSEETTER
