It is what it is, but as a Philadelphian and Eagles fan, you had to be quietly rooting for Duce, who spent most of his entire professional football career both as a player and a coach here in Philly.

For now, he will remain the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overseer of the running backs and in the role of the longest-tenured coach in the organization.

Working Philadelphians rally this week in advance of the union-busting Supreme Court case that could cripple their bargaining chip

peaking at Cornell Gheeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s funeral was one of the hardest things Omar Salaam ever did.

Ghee was one of Salaamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early mentors when he came into the world of city sanitation as a young man from West Philly. Ghee was 15 years his senior, but in the years to come, Salaam would come to know him as a friend, a ďŹ tness buff, a semi-pro football player who, even well into his 40s, was showing colleagues half his age how to stay ďŹ t. He never smoked or drank. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was one of the hardest workers I ever knew,â&#x20AC;? Salaam recalls.

Ghee died in 2015, a month after he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. At 53, he left behind two young adult children, including a daughter in her freshman year of college.

While medically inconclusive, Salaam, now 40, believes Gheeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s departure from this world

was hastened by the hazards of their job. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every year itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s somebody else,â&#x20AC;? Salaam says of ailing coworkers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cancer is rampant.

We deal with toxic materials all day long. But when it comes up in discussions about trying to incorporate hazard pay, it often gets pushed to the side.â&#x20AC;?

The U.S. Department of Labor deďŹ nes hazard pay as extra compensation for workers whose duties include physical hardship and hazardous materials. The essence, according to Salaam: We may not live as long because of this job, so pay us more.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not an easy sells to employers, both public and private. But today, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of many beneďŹ ts that Salaam ďŹ ghts for as a Philly union rep with the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees. The unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s local branch, District Council 47, wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see its next contract negotiation until 2020, but on Saturday, Feb. 24, AFSCME

THE SCOTUS CASE, IN BRIEF Mark Janus and two other Illinois state workers are the lead plaintiffs in a unionbusting case against the AFSCME union, which will be heard before the U.S. Supreme Court next week. Their lawsuit looks to reverse a decades-old ruling which affirmed the right of municipal labor groups to collect small â&#x20AC;&#x153;fair shareâ&#x20AC;? fees from nonmembers who still enjoy union perks. The plaintiffs argue that mandatory non-union dues â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even partial ones â&#x20AC;&#x201C; violate their freedom of speech and association.

and other labor groups across the country are taking to the streets with an acute sense of urgency.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the annual Working Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day of Action. And this year, it falls just days before the U.S. Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments in a case that could deal a heavy blow to unionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; staying power across the country.

Janus vs. AFSCME is widely considered one of the most consequential anti-union cases in decades. A ruling in favor of Janus would allow public sector employees to opt out of paying all union dues. The unions, meanwhile, would still be bound to represent non-union members â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but without the ďŹ nancial support provided by fees. Going by national averages, union dues hover around 1 percent of a memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s income. While upperbracket union members like police ofďŹ cers or ďŹ reďŹ ghters may not feel the hit, labor ofďŹ cials predict that many lower-earning members will increasingly opt out of the union and yet still enjoy its collective bargaining beneďŹ ts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A loaf of bread is expensive,â&#x20AC;? says Bonnee Breese Bentum, a board member with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers who has taught in the district for more than 16 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to choose to buy the loaf of bread versus paying the union â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how simple it is.â&#x20AC;?

Advocates say the erosion of dues-paying membership is the desired effect of those pushing the Janus case â&#x20AC;&#x201C; anti-union groups like the National Right to Work Foundation and the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC. The plaintiffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s argument â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that unionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fee systems are a First Amendment afront â&#x20AC;&#x201C; has been heard before. A landmark 1977 case in the Supreme Court ruled public-sector labor peace takes precedence over an individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right to freedom of association. That case did, however, allow union membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; who disagreed with their groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s political messaging to request a partial refund. While dues do not directly ďŹ nance union political operations, Janus-like cases ďŹ led around the country have argued that dues â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even â&#x20AC;&#x153;fair-shareâ&#x20AC;? payments which prevent politically opposed union members from free-riding union perks â&#x20AC;&#x201C; amount to a First Amendment violation. In short, they say, dues mean guilt by association. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the Supreme Court agreeing to hear the Janus case, we are now one step closer to freeing over 5 million public-sector teachers, police ofďŹ cers, ďŹ reďŹ ghters, and other employees from the injustice of being forced to subsidize a union as a condition of working for their own government,â&#x20AC;? Mark Mix, president of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, wrote in September.

The National Right to Work Foundation has backed similar local cases as well, including a lawsuit ďŹ led last year on behalf of teachers in Berks and Chester counties. Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers in Pennsylvania have been pushing right-to-work laws through Harrisburg that would prohibit fees for non-

NEWS union municipal workers, arguing unions would have to better represent membership to retain enrollment.

For Philly teachers, Beese Bentum says the loss of even those fair-share fees would impact the PFTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already storm-battered bargaining chip. The teachersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; union endured four and a half years without a contract and ďŹ ve without a raise. The decline of working conditions during that time were extensively documented. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many teachers like myself who spend our own money to help other peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children all the time,â&#x20AC;? Beese Bentum says.

Now, even organizations like Planned Parenthood are involved in the ďŹ ght against the Janus case, saying that weakened public unions would hurt their own causes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know the role that unions play in closing the pay gap, especially when it comes to women of color,â&#x20AC;? says Danitra Sherman, senior regional ďŹ eld director with Planned Parenthoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regional advocacy arm and a speaker at Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rally.

On the Working Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day of Action, which begins at 10 a.m. at Thomas Paine Plaza, local labor unions will be joined by civil rights groups, faith-based organizations and anti-poverty activists. Fittingly, Salaam notes, the rally falls on the year of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. joining sanitation workers in Memphis, Tenn., in their strike for greater union protections.

Salaam will be ďŹ&#x201A;anked by his wife and two children as he marches with his fellow sanitation workers. He says heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be thinking of his old mentor and friend, the late Cornell Ghee. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We understand that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not engineers from NASA,â&#x20AC;? Salaam says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not gonna make a huge amount of money. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just asking for a decent wage so we can live decent lives, send our kids to good schools and live in good neighborhoods.â&#x20AC;? Q

hether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about bike lanes, street cleaning, or the tragic loss of a cyclistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, mention bicycles in a Philly news outlet and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guaranteed to be a slew of commentary.

While almost all of us are pedestrians at some point, and most walkers and bikers occasionally drive, not all drivers and pedestrians have experienced bike riding in the city.

This leads to misunderstanding cyclist behavior. Combined with the cognitive changes that happen when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re driving, most of the negative attitudes about biking are explainable.

Illogical and based in bad information, but explainable as we sought out to do:

BELIEF: CYCLISTS ARE LAWBREAKERS The most prevalent reason given for disliking cyclists is their alleged criminality. This assumes folks using other forms of transportation are law-abiding â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which, of course, is not supported by research.

A recent study published in the Journal of Transport and Land Use found cyclists and drivers break the law at similar rates, but drivers usually do so for reasons of convenience, while cyclists are often motivated by safety.

The chief complaint about cyclists is failing to stop at intersections, which many bike riders say allows them to both conserve energy and avoid being pinned between moving and parked cars.

Meanwhile, Philadelphians are notorious jaywalkers, though few consider it a crime.

One move that is both illegal and illogical: riding against trafďŹ c ďŹ&#x201A;ow. These so-called â&#x20AC;&#x153;bike salmonâ&#x20AC;? argue that it allows them to see trafďŹ c better, but it reduces reaction time for drivers and endangers other cyclists.

What accounts for this perception of cyclists as scofďŹ&#x201A;aws? Drivers and pedestrians may justify their own rational law-breaking (speeding and jaywalking hardly feel criminal), but apply a different standard to cyclists.

Social identity theory explains this behavior: we judge actions differently depending on whether we identify as part of the group. We might think, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sure, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;someâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pedestrians are jerks, but clearly not all of them.â&#x20AC;?

BELIEF: CYCLISTS ARE DANGEROUS Another common refrain is that cyclists behave recklessly. Comment sections are replete with anecdotes about pedestrians nearly being hit by bikes and drivers spooked by cyclists who â&#x20AC;&#x153;came out of nowhere.â&#x20AC;?

Some of this is due to the principle of memorable effects: weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re more likely to recall rude and scary moments: we simply donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t notice average behavior. Researchers say the current rate of collisions is probably more attributable to distracted drivers and walkers, who are far more likely to be using a smartphone, listening to music, or otherwise occupied, than a cyclist.

The psychological theory of projection might also explain this one. We tend to deny our own unconscious behaviors while shifting blame to others. The ďŹ eld of trafďŹ c psychology, which studies the way our brains operate while driving, ďŹ nds that behind the wheel we tend to underestimate our aggressiveness while we overestimate safety conditions, our skills and our ability to perceive relevant information. Drivers receive less visual and auditory input about surrounding trafďŹ c simply by being inside a car, and they are incredibly bad at assessing their own distractibility, so when a bicycle â&#x20AC;&#x153;suddenlyâ&#x20AC;? appears, they often attribute it to the cyclist not doing enough to be visible.

BELIEF: ROADS ARENâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;T MEANT FOR BIKES Some Philadelphians are under the impression bikes are supposed to ride on the sidewalk, according to what a few random drivers have yelled out their windows. Others insist roads were not designed for cyclists.

Randy LoBasso, communications manager at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, noted the following: â&#x20AC;&#x153;When Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s streets were designed centuries ago, they were not meant for cars because cars did not exist.â&#x20AC;?

He added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bicycles were here before cars, and they will be here after cars.â&#x20AC;?

The idea city streets belong to motor vehicle trafďŹ c is relatively new, the result of a public relations effort of car manufacturers and the American Automobile Association, seeking to challenge the perception that cars are too dangerous for cities. A recent Salon article noted there has been lobbying to outlaw jaywalking and even suggests stories were planted in newspapers that blamed pedestrians for their own deaths.

Sustainable models of city planning will have to prioritize public transit and bicycle trafďŹ c. The climate and economy cannot maintain the current car-centric approach for long. Cars, buses and trucks require constant maintenance of expensive infrastructure and building more roads has only ever proven to increase trafďŹ c.

LoBasso points out cyclists â&#x20AC;&#x153;already pay more than their â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fair shareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for city roads, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motorists who are getting subsidized by everyone else. Tolls, fuel and licensing only actually make up about 50 percent of all road funding, according to the Tax Foundation.â&#x20AC;?

He also cites transportation experts Janette Sadik-Khan and Seth Solomonow who say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bicycles provide little, if any of this wear and tear. When bike lanes get beat up, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because motor vehicles are allowed to illegally park in them freely.â&#x20AC;?

BELIEF: CYCLISTS ARE ARROGANT For some Philadelphians, it comes down to attitude: they say cyclists are entitled, pretentious and their demands are, according to one Facebook commentator: â&#x20AC;&#x153;white privilege at its ďŹ nest.â&#x20AC;?

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not much data on the relative arrogance rates of Philadelphians based on mode of transportation. But legally, cyclists are entitled to the road.

Decades of research show the act of being in a car actually makes us more antisocial.

When two pedestrians nearly collide, they usually apologize, but not so with drivers, who are likely to be experiencing deindividuation: theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re surrounded by others but separate from them. It results in feeling anonymous, with dampening of self-awareness and personal responsibility.

Meanwhile, cyclists are disdained for many of the same reasons as vegans and people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drink at parties: the defense mechanism of a reaction formation. Knowing bikes are good for the environment and physical health, those who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t plan to ditch their cars may feel judged.

So whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the solution?

On both sides, while in transit, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a dick. We can also acknowledge our potential for bias and strive to view others as people, not obstacles. Also, building infrastructure that is conducive to multiple forms of transportation and the creation of laws that acknowledge bikes are neither cars or pedestrians is really just a smart thing to do. Fresh start?

After an embarrassing special election, North Philly politicos turn on their state representative

ess than a year ago, they helped elect him. Today, Democratic politicos in North Philadelphia have withdrawn support for their rookie state representative.

In a meeting last week, ward leaders in the Latino and African-American neighborhoods of the 197th Pa. House district voted to back former City Council aide Danilo Burgos against the incumbent state Rep. Emilio Vazquez in the upcoming May primary.

Vazquez, a former Philadelphia Parking Authority employee and longtime leader of the 43rd ward, was elected last March via an unusual write-in campaign in an equally unusual special election, which began with the original Democratic nominee being removed from the ballot and ended with an illegal electioneering lawsuit.

Vazquez says he still plans to seek reelection. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Endorsements really donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean much.

The only thing is, by not getting the endorsements, you save money,â&#x20AC;? Vazquez said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are just these people that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like me and the way I run the House of Representatives â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but I do what I need to represent the district that I was elected to serve.â&#x20AC;?

The politics of North Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Latino strongholds are convoluted and full of conďŹ&#x201A;icting personalities â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so, a brief history of whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gone down in this particular district: UĂ&#x160;/Â&#x2026;iĂ&#x160;ÂŤĂ&#x20AC;iĂ&#x203A;Â&#x2C6;Â&#x153;Ă&#x2022;Ă&#x192;Ă&#x160;Ă&#x152;Ă&#x153;Â&#x153;Ă&#x160;Â&#x2C6;Â&#x2DC;VĂ&#x2022;Â&#x201C;LiÂ&#x2DC;Ă&#x152;Ă&#x192;Ă&#x160;Â&#x2C6;Â&#x2DC;Ă&#x160;Ă&#x152;Â&#x2026;iĂ&#x160;ÂŁÂ&#x2122;Ă&#x2021;Ă&#x152;Â&#x2026;Ă&#x160; district left ofďŹ ce in disgrace. First was state Rep. Jose "J.P." Miranda, who, in 2014, went down over a ghost employee scam. In 2016, Mirandaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s successor, former state Rep. Leslie Acosta, pleaded guilty to a money laundering conspiracy at a mental health clinic operated by a politically wired family in the neighborhood. (That mental health clinic was at one time run by the now-convicted Renee Tartaglione and her husband Carlos Matos, who remains an inďŹ&#x201A;uential ward leader.)

She stepped down at the beginning of the term, triggering one of the more bizarre special elections Philly has seen in recent years.

UĂ&#x160; Â&#x2DC;Ă&#x160; Â?Â&#x2C6;iĂ&#x2022;Ă&#x160; Â&#x153;vĂ&#x160; >Ă&#x160; VÂ&#x153;Â&#x201C;ÂŤiĂ&#x152;Â&#x2C6;Ă&#x152;Â&#x2C6;Ă&#x203A;iĂ&#x160; ÂŤĂ&#x20AC;Â&#x2C6;Â&#x201C;>Ă&#x20AC;Ă&#x17E;]Ă&#x160; Ă&#x192;ÂŤiVÂ&#x2C6;>Â?Ă&#x160; elections allow committee people and ward leaders from each party to nominate their own candidate. In many Philly districts, this means a shoe-in victory for Democrats, who hold an outsize voter registration advantage.

Dems, but their party-backed candidate, Dr. Freddie Ramirez, was hit with a legal challenge alleging that he lived in Bucks County. The case went to court, and in a surprising move, a judge ordered his name booted from the ballot. Well past ďŹ ling deadlines, the overwhelmingly Democratic district found itself without a Democrat on the ballot.

UĂ&#x160; Â&#x2DC;Ă&#x160;Ă&#x192;Ă&#x152;iÂŤÂŤi`Ă&#x160;6>â¾Ă&#x2022;iâĂ&#x160;Ă&#x152;Â&#x153;Ă&#x160;Ă&#x20AC;Ă&#x2022;Â&#x2DC;Ă&#x160;>Ă&#x160;Ă&#x153;Ă&#x20AC;Â&#x2C6;Ă&#x152;iÂ&#x2021;Â&#x2C6;Â&#x2DC;Ă&#x160;V>Â&#x201C;paign. He ended up trouncing the sole candidate on the ballot, Republican Lucinda Little, as well as fellow write-in Cheri Honkala, a Green Party supporter who failed to ďŹ le her candidacy in time. The two losing candidates alleged foul play.

UĂ&#x160; Â&#x2DC;Ă&#x160; "VĂ&#x152;Â&#x153;LiĂ&#x20AC;]Ă&#x160; iÂ?iVĂ&#x152;Â&#x2C6;Â&#x153;Â&#x2DC;Ă&#x160; vĂ&#x20AC;>Ă&#x2022;`Ă&#x160; VÂ&#x2026;>Ă&#x20AC;}iĂ&#x192;Ă&#x160; Ă&#x153;iĂ&#x20AC;iĂ&#x160; ďŹ led against four Democrats who were working polling stations that day.

Needless to say, the ongoing drama has left a mark on the local party leaders.

The newly backed candidate, Burgos, a former aide to Councilwoman Maria QuiĂąonesSĂĄnchez and Councilman Allan Domb, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t new to the neighborhoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s political arena. He ran for the same seat in 2014, ďŹ nishing in second place behind the now-convicted Acosta.

The incumbent maintains that he has managed the district ofďŹ ce well, servicing thousands of families since he was sworn in last April; Burgos believes itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for the district to put the recent scandals behind them and move in another direction. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe the party is identifying good talent,â&#x20AC;? Burgos said via a phone interview. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The party decided to go a different way with a candidate who is recognized by the community.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the party,â&#x20AC;? Vazquez countered, in a separate interview. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what Carlos [Matos] wants. But it is what it is. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not here to badmouth anyone...Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about the people of el barrio.â&#x20AC;?

Burgos won by a slim margin of committee votes. Two of the seven wards in the district â&#x20AC;&#x201C; lead by Vazquez and Matos â&#x20AC;&#x201C; carry the lionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ă&#x192;Â&#x2026;>Ă&#x20AC;iĂ&#x160;Â&#x153;vĂ&#x160;Ă&#x152;Â&#x2026;Â&#x153;Ă&#x192;iĂ&#x160;Ă&#x203A;Â&#x153;Ă&#x152;iĂ&#x192;°Ă&#x160;"Â&#x2DC;Â?Ă&#x17E;Ă&#x160;6>â¾Ă&#x2022;iâ½Ă&#x192;Ă&#x160;Ă&#x153;>Ă&#x20AC;`Ă&#x160;>Â&#x2DC;`Ă&#x160; one other voted to back him; the remainder went to Burgos, both candidates conďŹ rmed.

Also of note, Fred Ramirez, the candidate who was removed from the ballot last year, has been rumored to be running as well.

Reached at the Pan-American Mental Health Clinic where he serves as president, Ramirez conďŹ rmed that he may run again, but declined to comment on speciďŹ cs.

hen I ďŹ rst heard about Rob Lawless and his goal of sitting down and meeting 10,000 strangers in his lifetime, the ďŹ rst thing I thought was, â&#x20AC;&#x153;this dude probably drinks a shit ton of coffee.â&#x20AC;?

But Lawless says itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s less the coffee and more the conversation that fuels his @Robs10kFriends Instagram handle when he made me a subject of his personal experiment earlier this year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in a coffee shop of all places. At the time of this report, the Philly native, who started his experiment in early November 2015, had amassed an eclectic mix of 1,614 people with

whom heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d sparked a conversation with on dual coasts.

I was number 1,515. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think all of us, especially as adults, feel like thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no good way to connect with people,â&#x20AC;? said Lawless, 27, over a glass of water during our meet at the ďŹ&#x201A;agship coffee house of Philly staple La Colombe. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people have their group of friends set already or we just connect when thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a [business or relationship] agenda attached to it. I think for me, I pose no threat because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any agenda that people openly come up ask to meet or pass me along to their friends â&#x20AC;Ś itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not about meeting celebrities or getting to know anyone on whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perceived as a higher level of humanity.

I want to meet people that want to meet me and get to know their story.â&#x20AC;?

The story of Lawless and his desire to kickstart a widely popular social handle came from a ďŹ ve-year glance at his own life. A Penn State grad, he picked a with a good job working in ďŹ nance as a consultant, but where some would see it as a foot in the door, Lawless saw it as a prison sentence.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just realized that I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to sit behind a computer for the next 30 years of my life,â&#x20AC;? he said ďŹ rmly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was always looking for ways to escape the corporate life path and I think that this was the one idea I always felt strongly about and that I could make into something bigger.â&#x20AC;?

Quitting his job in ďŹ nance, Lawless took baby steps in the project, knowing he would still need to eat. He worked brieďŹ&#x201A;y for a tech startup in the city, but after it was purchased during the summer of 2016, Lawless found the decision to take his 10kFriends project next level was done for him after the company that bought out his ďŹ rm laid him off.

The project does receive some corporate sponsorship to keep it going, but for Lawless itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spending the money that does come in wisely on his goal of proving that just because we roam as strangers among each other, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no reason to be strange. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I view Philadelphia as a campus now, the same way I viewed Penn State as a campus when I went there,â&#x20AC;? Lawless said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every week, I run into people that were a part of the project and it just makes sense. We are all geographically occupying the same area, for me through this project, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just turning the light switch on to the people and the lives that are all around us. They are invisible until you know their background. Once you meet them, then I feel like you see them or extensions of them everywhere.â&#x20AC;?

His goal is to branch out as heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already begun meeting people in Los Angeles, courtesy of a six-month stay at the home of his friend and former roommate. But a goal to meet people in other cities and countries is not out of the question, though he notes that Philly will always remain his base camp.

I walked away from our hour-long discussion, the same amount of time Lawless gives every person heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s met compelled to help spread his message.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve given him residency here at PW, where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll feature some great Philadelphians he encounters on a daily basis. Each month, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll feature a pair of notable meetups and use our channels as an extension of Lawlessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; own efforts on a path to 10,000 people.

And just how long is that going to take? â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be honest, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no timeline,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not like Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m trying to meet 10,000 in 10 years or ďŹ ve years or anything like that. This is a great way for me to get to know just a handful of the personalities that make up a much larger picture. To me, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m happy that in the end, this is what I chose to do.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be a painter that made pretty pictures.â&#x20AC;? When it comes to her artwork (which can be found at @nataliemariesaez), Natalie Saez operates in the niche of surreal portraits, attempting to visually capture the psyches of her subjects.

She began drawing at a young age (she remembers attempting to sketch her cat when she was 4 years old) and sharpened her skills as she grew older by majoring in painting at @ arizonastateuniversity. Originally from Orange County, CA, she then moved out to Philly to attend graduate school at @drexeluniv and now works as a painter and art therapist out here.

Through her interactions with her clients, she draws inspiration for visuals such as a portrait set in the background of a dust cloud like the ones she experienced in Arizona. However, with all of her work Natalie includes autobiographical themes based on qualities she learns about herself, such as the fact that she experiences â&#x20AC;&#x153;creative withdrawalsâ&#x20AC;? if she goes without painting for too long. FILM You just saw the movie a few hours ago.

What are your immediate thoughts on it?

I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect to feel the way I felt about it. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a number of movies with Black leads and casts over the last several years, but I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect the sort of spiritual connection to ancestral Africa I had in this ďŹ lm. To see Africa be portrayed in that way is something we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ever get the opportunity to see.

Wakanda is obviously a fictional country, but how did you feel about the filmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s portrayal of African culture?

The movie really makes you think about the reality of Africa as a [continent] that does and did have so many great resources that, to be quite honest, people wanted to exploit and use. It makes you think, what if these countries werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t colonized? How does that change the narrative in world history? All those thoughts are going through my head.

or many, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the hero theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve waited their whole lives to see.

With the recent release of superhero ďŹ&#x201A;ick Black Panther, Disney and Marvel Studios expanded their already extensive roster of powered-up crime ďŹ ghters to introduce its titular hero. Tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, is the king of Wakanda, a ďŹ ctional country that uses advanced technology to hide its Afrofuturistic beauty from the rest of the world.

The movie transcends normal comic book fare by contextualizing Wakanda into the modern political climate, while giving a stage to African characters and culture.

Sheena C. Howard has a lot to say about it. She extensively studies Black representation in comic books and ďŹ lms. In fact, the Rider University scholar wrote an entire book on the topic, called Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what she had to say.

The current Marvel Cinematic Universe took 10 years to tell this story. What are your thoughts on that?

I would like for this moment to be normalized. I want it to just be normal to have movies like this with a cast of Black people, brown people and women where itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a socially acceptable thing, and not cast aside as just another Black movie. This movie didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get typecast in that way.

The movie is already setting box office records since it released Friday. It saw massive global results of $404 million over the long weekend. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the fifth-biggest domestic opening, ever.

I feel like major production companies and people in Hollywood consider superheroes that are women or Black as movies that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sell tickets. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s frustrating weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve disproven that myth time and time and time again, yet those notions persist. From this moment on, that sort of thing wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hold back production of ďŹ lms like this.

We saw a similar story with Wonder Woman last year.

Marvelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Black Panther is more than just another superhero movie, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s changing the way we look at diversity in film.

And I hope it continues. Wonder Woman broke the box ofďŹ ce and it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be one of those times where we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see another ďŹ lm like it until 10 years down the line. Hopefully we see more of these diverse stories and diverse characters in ďŹ lm. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not just talking about race and gender, but able-bodiedness, disabilities, and other identities and ethnicities.

The thing about Black Panther is it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Black people being depicted positively, but in a multi-dimensional way. There are good guys and bad guys and variations of Blackness, not just single-dimension iconography we often get depicted in.

People have been waiting for this characterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s appearance. We also had celebrities buying out

theaters for youth to see the ďŹ lm. People waited for this moment for a very long time.

How do you feel about the filmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s portrayal of women?

The movie did a great job showing the complex multi-dimensionality of women. How often do we see a brother-sister bond depicted this way in movies, especially between Black siblings? How often do we see the developing relationship between Tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Yongo) and Black love displayed in the way Black Panther depicted? How often do we get to see an all-Black female warrior squad? There are so many dimensions in the movie that speak to what we should have been seeing all along.

Michael B. Jordanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s villainous role, Killmonger, is getting a lot of attention for coming from a very real place for many disadvantaged youths. Without spoilers, how did you feel about his role?

I am still unpacking Michael B. Jordanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role in the ďŹ lm because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actually really deep.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re talking about two different perspectives (Tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Challa and Killmonger) who are dealing with the aftermath of Black people being violently disconnected from their history and what that means. Killmonger represents that kid who was pissed off because his connection to his hometown was violently taken away. In the movie this led to internal conďŹ&#x201A;ict, inďŹ ghting in Wakanda, and very real political connections to Africa.

One point that was interesting that Tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Challa makes is that power ultimately doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have anything to do with race. Even on a continent with all Black people, there would still be someone who wants to be more powerful than the king. People are still driven by power, regardless of race. You have the disaffected inner city Black youth ďŹ nding Wakanda, and the king who comes from a privileged background who knows his roots. At the end of the day, who will win? For Black Americans and Africans in America, there is very real tension in perspective in those communities.

The real-world parallels in the movie were very well done.

Those are very real concerns.

That the movie exists in this moment of time speaks to the ďŹ ght of Black creative in the comics and ďŹ lm industry. We have been ďŹ ghting for these moments for awhile. he word about East Passyunk Restaurant Week typically starts spreading in January, right after the Center City version wraps.

However, the buzz was slightly delayed this year as a result of the Philadelphia Eagles winning Super Bowl LII. Now that the celebration, Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day and Presidents Day Weekend have all passed, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to start talking about food â&#x20AC;&#x201C; speciďŹ cally where to eat during the sixth annual installment of East Passyunk Restaurant Week.

The event kicks off Feb. 26, and runs through March 9. There are 26 restaurants participating â&#x20AC;&#x201C; four of which are ďŹ rst-timers.

Participating restaurants are rolling out threecourse menus for $15, $25 or $35 per person, not including tax and gratuity.

Pam Zenzola, executive director of the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District, has been busy uploading the menus to the East Passyunk Restaurant Week website and getting the word out.

It has included getting 2017 newcomers Barcelona Wine Bar, 1709 E. Passyunk Ave., and Pistolaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s del Sur, 1934 E. Passyunk Ave., both opened in 2017. Chef Nicholas Elmi, a former â&#x20AC;&#x153;Top Chefâ&#x20AC;? winner, is rolling out EPRW special menus at ITV, 1615 E. Passyunk Ave., for the ďŹ rst time. Chhaya Cafe, 1819 E. Passyunk Ave, chef/owner V. Beuria is the other ďŹ rst-time participant. Zenzola said it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hard getting restaurants, including new ones, on board. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hard at all,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are like a big family down here.â&#x20AC;?

Zenzola added that generally when there is inquiry, phrases like â&#x20AC;&#x153;How can I be involved?â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;What can I do?â&#x20AC;? are generally the common responses.

Restaurants along what many consider South Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foodie row have earned national acclaim, including being named one of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Top 10 Foodie Streets in Americaâ&#x20AC;? by Food and Wine Magazine.

With a wide range of options that include Italian, Mexican, Spanish tapas, Northern European, French and others, deciding where to go is not such an easy decision. The userfriendly EPRW website (eastpassyunkrestaurantweek.com) provides links to each of the participating establishments, what the special menu choices are and what nights it will be available.

By rolling out the special menus on nights that may typically be slower, those nights suddenly are not. February and March also tend to be colder months in which residents may prefer eating at home. Zenzola said the Tuesday/Wednesday crowd over the next two weeks may be more like a Friday or Saturday night. Some people will look at one of the menus and say â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have to try thatâ&#x20AC;? while others will decide this is the perfect time to try a place for the ďŹ rst time. â&#x20AC;&#x2122;m an 18-year-old female. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m cisgender and bisexual. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been in a monogamous relationship with my cisgender bisexual boyfriend for about a year. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m currently struggling with a lot of internalized biphobia and other hang-ups about my boyfriendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sexuality. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m projecting my own issues onto him or if Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just being bigoted towards bi men, but either way, I feel truly awful about it. But when I think about the fact that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bi and is attracted to men, I become jealous and fearful that he will leave me for a man or that he would rather be with a man.

(Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been with men and women in the past; heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never been with a man.) I know it is unfair of me to feel this way and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never given me any real reason to fear this. We have a very engaged, kinky, and rewarding sex life! But I worry Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not what he really wants.

This situation is complicated by the near certainty that my boyfriend has some sort of hormonal disorder. He has a very young face for an 18 year old, a feminine ďŹ gure, and not a lot of body hair. He orgasms but he does not ejaculate; and although he has a sizable penis, his testicles are more like the size of grapes than eggs. He struggles a lot with feeling abnormal and un-masculine. I try to be as supportive as possible and tell him how attracted to him I am and how heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get through whatever this is. But he can tell his bi-ness makes me nervous and uncomfortable. I think that because he appears more feminine than most men and is more often hit on by men than women, I worry that he would feel more comfortable or â&#x20AC;&#x153;normalâ&#x20AC;? with a man.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to contribute to him feeling abnormal or bad about himself. How do I stop worrying that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gay or would be happier with a man? I feel horrible about myself for these anxieties considering that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m bi too, and should know better. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Anonymous Nervous Girlfriend Seeks Tranquility

So if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been on the receiving end of biphobiaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;as almost all bisexual people haveâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;why are you doing it to your bisexual boyfriend? â&#x20AC;&#x153;This hypothetical so-and-so-is-going-toleave-me-for-someone-hotter scenario could happen to anyone of any orientation,â&#x20AC;? said Aguiar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But maybe because the potential â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pool of applicantsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is over twice as big for us Bi+ folk, we get stuck with twice as much of this irrational fear? I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know. But hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what I do know: most biphobia (and jealousy for that matter) is projected insecurity. Built into the fear that someone will leave you because they â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;like x or y betterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is the assumption that you yourself arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t good enough.â&#x20AC;?

And while feelings of insecurity and jealousy can undermine a relationship, ANGST, they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to. It all depends on how you address them when they arise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We all have our moments!â&#x20AC;? said Aguiar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But we can turn these moments into opportunities for open communication and intimacy rather than moments of isolation and shame.

That way they end up bringing you closer, rather than drive this invisible wedge between you. The key is to understand that feelings arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always rational. But if we can share those feelings with the person we love without fear of judgment or reprisal, it can help create a space of comfort and intimacy that no piece of ass will ever be able to compete withâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;no matter how hot they are or what they may or may not have between their legs.â&#x20AC;?

As for the reasons youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re feeling insecureâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; your boyfriend might be gay and/or happier with a manâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to lie to you, ANGST. Your boyfriend could be gay (some people who arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bisexual identify as bi before coming out as gay or lesbian), and/or he could one day realize that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be happier with a man (just as you could one day realize that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be happier with a woman). But your wonderful sex lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;your engaging, kinky, rewarding sex lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;is pretty good evidence that your boyfriend isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t gay. (I was one of those guys who identiďŹ ed as bi before coming out as gay, ANGST, and I had girlfriends and the sex we had was far from wonderful.)

And now, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m gonna tell you something you no doubt already know: Very few people wind up spending their lives with the person they were dating at 18. You and your boyfriend are both in the process of ďŹ guring out who you are and what you want. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possible heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll realize youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not the person he wants to be with, ANGST, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also possible youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll realize heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the person you want to be with. Stop worrying about the next six or seven decades of your lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;stop worrying about foreverâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and enjoy this time and this boy and this relationship for however long it lasts.
