Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s out KERITH GABRIEL

T

his summer, while kids are enjoying a break from school here in Philadelphia, the work of Mayor Jim Kenneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nine appointees to the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school board will ofďŹ cially begin.

The new board â&#x20AC;&#x201C; comprised of six women and three men, all with diverse backgrounds and formidable resumes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; will kick off on July 1, following the dissolution of the School Reform Commission. The group will have the reins on a proposed $3.2 million budget to a district that still hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ďŹ gured out a signiďŹ cant way to generate revenue.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an extremely daunting assignment and I wish them all well.

The group is getting an early start on the assignment via a series of planned meetings across the city, asking parents and fellow educators what they need to improve the conditions across many schools. As a new parent to a child who Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m seriously considering putting into the school district, I have a question on my mind that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure other parents would like to ask as well.

How do you plan to make attending a Philadelphia public school an experience worth considering?

Rapid development is leading to a notable change â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in many cases, ďŹ nancially â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to many neighborhoods across the city.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been some time since the city has seen so many families deciding to raise families here. You have people making six ďŹ gures living next to people on public assistance, but both have children and want them to attend schools that are safe and will actually offer an education that will help their child succeed, to go to a good high school and eventually a good college. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You would think that with the way this area is changing that this school would be better,â&#x20AC;? said Mina Talese, who recently moved to Kensington but has trepidation of sending her daughter, Vanessa, to the area elementary school. Instead, Talese told me she spends upward of $20,000 and drives

30 minutes out of her way for her child to attend a private school at the edge of the city limits, just because she knows itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a safer environment. Talese said she took a tour of the elementary school three blocks from her house and, in her eyes, it was not up to par. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t picture her going to school there,â&#x20AC;? Talese continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They had a lot of technology and the teachers were very nice, but it was loud, so loud. Maybe I came at lunch time or something but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how you could learn in an environment like that. There were kids outside and I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t prove it, but I think one of them was smoking weed out of a [vape] pen. How is that any kind of experience?â&#x20AC;?

One of the questions the school board needs to ask itself is what programs and policies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; if any â&#x20AC;&#x201C; can convince parents that it is indeed worth investing their kids into their neighborhood public schools, that a rising tide will indeed ďŹ&#x201A;oat all boats.

I have friends who Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d describe as yuppies. They think city life is alluring, but have already said that, as soon as the kids are kindergarten age, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re taking the familiar exodus to the burbs. Not because they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford to send their kid to a private school, but as one put it, â&#x20AC;&#x153;there are so many great public schools just outside the city limits, I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t justify paying for private to live in the city.â&#x20AC;?

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get me wrong, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m aware that a good school takes a community. Take a look at some of the best public schools in the city and one of the things youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll readily see is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a concerted effort between parents and educators to provide a safe, enriching environment. But at the same time, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d also like to know if the board has a handle on the schools that need the attention and what resources will be afforded to those schools that need a little jumpstart.

So I implore all of you that have young children in the district to attend these meetings and ask a ton of questions. Get to know the faces of the people who will be the decision makers on the future of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s students. Also, get to know the people who the mayor feels strongly enough to ask Council to approve a tax increase on all of us that could net the district $1 billion over the next ďŹ ve years if it goes through.

Wawa is in hot water (pun intended) after a man claims that a faulty coffee cup made him spill hot coffee on his crotch and is suing the convenience chain for more than $50,000 alleging permanent scarring and disďŹ gurement, according to court docs. The suit compounds another in which an employee of Wawaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ridley Township location claims that after being instructed to stick his arm into a trash compactor in 2015 found the machine malfunction, crushing his arm. To be Martha Stuckey, is to be a wearer of many hats under the sphere of music and theater. Stuckey is arguably best known as provocative songstress Red 40, the front woman of Philly-based band Red 40 and the Last Groovement. As Red, Stuckey is a literal ďŹ recracker on stage, telling stories â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some autobiographical â&#x20AC;&#x201C; of relationships, sex and other vagina monologues that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; man or woman â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you actually want to listen to in the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s album Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Keen to Feed.

Stuckeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest act is taking off the red wig for pearls and body paint in what she hopes is an equally insightful, captivating and sexy look at the female form in her theatrical creation, Due to the Sensitive Nature, playing for three nights inside the Kimmel Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s SEI Innovation Studio.

The show, a representation of her as a female, has Red 40 roots, as this show came by way of being seen as Red 40 and offered a residency at the Kimmel.

Due to the Sensitive Nature is a near-year grind and labor of love to create something that correlates to the force of Stuckeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s womanhood, but differs from the idea that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a continuation of the red-haired sex pistol that takes the stage with her bandmates.

We caught up with Stuckey before the start of her ďŹ rst theatrical appearance since appearing in Close Music for Bodies, as part of last Septemberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fringe Festival. Stuckey talked musical inspirations, sex and relationships and life wearing multiple hats.

How much is Due to the Sensitive Nature an offspring of the type of work youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re already displaying whether it be through your music as Red 40 or other theatrical endeavors?

The Kimmel has a theater residency every year and I was invited to be a part of it last June. The theme of the residency was to â&#x20AC;&#x153;invade our own privacy.â&#x20AC;? The person in charge of the residency had seen my work as [theatrical singer] Red 40, which is a whole persona where I dress up in costume and wear a big red wig and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a band and the songs are written in Red 40â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s point of view. So, the interest was having me write work from an autobiographical standpoint or whatever standpoint to me felt like it was invading my own privacy.

It was a pretty foreign experience because it felt a lot safer and less invasive to write from a characterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s standpoint. But once I opened the ďŹ&#x201A;oodgates, so to speak, I found the process really fruitful and a fertile ground to write from...itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really a piece about experiences that I have had as a woman and that includes the painful ones and the pleasurable ones and sometimes both at the same time.

So youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a little bit of Red 40 in this one, but as played by Martha?

I think as an artist, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really obsessed with womanhood. The way itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been sold to me in the past but the way it actually feels, too.

Sometimes, womanhood is a mystifying experience; where I bleed with the moon and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m wearing the biggest pair of sweatpants I have and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s looking like this is when I get some construction worker catcalling and telling me he wants to fuck me. I just think [being a woman] is a really rich place to get material from and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a part of my artistic process.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deďŹ nitely colors of Red 40 in this show, but through a couple of ďŹ lters. Red 40 comes from some place in me, so it does make sense that this piece has some relationship to it as well.

So what would you say is a major difference?

ally privilege down time. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something that I even had to do while creating Due to the Sensitive Nature, I needed to turn my brain off in order for the piece to progress. Sure, I couldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve kept at it, but I think I was getting less done actually by trying to grind it out than by taking breaks when I needed to. Life is hectic, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so important to take that time. I truly believe it now. Sometimes Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m actually bored now and it feels great.

The [musical] genre is really different.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m from Minnesota, so I grew up in a house that really liked to listen to folk music and Aerosmith, that classic rock which also â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really hope that [Due sounded very melodic to me [laughs] but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not to the Sensitive Nature] going to defend my love conveys is that life is really of Aerosmith. The writing funk and soul was a complex, for everyone. We real departure when Red have inner drive and outer 40 started up and was a huge learning curve. So forces and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re constantly writing this music which trying to make sense of is more folk melodies and rock songs and voboth of them at the same cal arrangements is sort time and make sense of of a return to music I listened to when I was our feelings about both at growing up.

In addition to Aerosmith, as a singer and songwriter, who are some other major influences on you?

What do you hope people coming to see Due to the Sensitive Nature take away from you as Martha the artist?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good question for me really to have an answer to. When I was writing this show at the very beginning back in June [2017], I was writing the show around a thing that I knew and I realized that with the help of the advisors there that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the most important thing to watch...at a certain point I realized itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot more interesting for me to ask a question [to the audience] on stage to dwell the complexity a little more. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s things about the piece that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not super interested in conveying â&#x20AC;&#x153;thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why this is trueâ&#x20AC;? itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more so a presentation of all of the layers of existing. Writing this show stemmed a lot from my from being a woman, but the takeaways I really hope that this conveys is that life is really complex, for everyone. But we have inner drive and outer forces and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re constantly trying to make sense of both of them at the same time and make sense of our feelings about both at the same time and that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really fucking hard. Most of all I feel compelled as an artist to recycle my feelings into an evocative piece that I hope people feel connected to me and the menusha of my life and that there are things within that they can take and apply to their life in whatever way feels right for them. For Red 40, I have to say, and this is gonna sound really tongue and cheek, but [laughs] I love the movie Sister Act II: Back in the Habit. Which featured amazing music! Lauryn Hill, an amazing artist. I know it sounds cheesy, but the [music from that movie] really served as my gateway drug. Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Brandy, I loved Brandy, Destinyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Child, when they were Destinyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Child before it got all weird with Beyonce stealing the outďŹ t. But I also liked Amy Winehouse, those inďŹ&#x201A;uences donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really correlate to the type of music in this show, but they were who I listened to and really served as my musical inspiration.

Between music and now theater, when does Martha find time to do stuff for Martha?

Damn, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a really good question. To be honest, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been worse. Working really for yourself and having the life of essentially a freelancer, for a performing artist you have to patch together if you need to get a day job â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or a couple of day jobs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you have to patch together various projects and for me Red 40 has been a passion of mine. So in the past, I really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have anytime for myself, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been better in recent years to re-

For eight years, the Pennsylvania Burlesque Festival was a celebration, but backlash from a decision to disallow diverse sexual orientations in its male revue forced producers to shut the whole thing down.

Producer who moved annual event out of Philly shuts it down completely amid controversy

fter eight years of sparkles, the Pennsylvania Burlesque Festival is cancelled â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and it seems no one is happy about the outcome, including those who had been protesting it.

The ninth iteration of the event had been scheduled to take place in Jim Thorpe, Pa., in August, and include, for the second time in the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history, a Friday night all-male â&#x20AC;&#x153;Renaissance Manâ&#x20AC;? show. When casting calls speciďŹ ed that applications for the male revue night were only open to cisgender men, some burlesque community members took to social media to object.

In an online performer forum, Washington, D.C.-area performer Adora Butch replied directly to the casting announcement saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I'm not comfortable applying to something that excludes trans performers.â&#x20AC;?

Incensed performers took to social media to convey their displeasure for the cancellation of the Pennsylvania Burlesque Festival.

In response to the objections, festival founder and organizer Brooke Burke posted a notice on Facebook that included: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The feedback I am receiving at this time of transition shows that my efforts are not being perceived as a means for lasting change. Out of respect to these voices, all tickets for the 9th Annual PA Burlesque Festival have been fully refunded, and this event is now a thing of the past. Thanks for an incredible eight seasons."

Burke spoke to PW in an exclusive interview about her decision to cancel the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All good things have to end eventually,â&#x20AC;? she said, adding, â&#x20AC;&#x153;this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t how I envisioned it.â&#x20AC;?

Burke explained she intended to feature trans performers in future editions of the Renaissance Man revue and pointed out artists of all genders were welcome to apply for the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s larger Saturday night event, dubbed the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Big Reveal.â&#x20AC;? She attributes her reticence to more inclusive casting the Friday show this year to the location of the festival in the Lehigh Valley, some parts close to two hours outside Philadelphia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a blue-collar area, not as liberal.

Part of the job of a producer is to take the temperature of the populace,â&#x20AC;? she says, adding she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t â&#x20AC;&#x153;want to alienate the fan baseâ&#x20AC;? but instead â&#x20AC;&#x153;gradually shift their expectations and cultivate new fans.â&#x20AC;?

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d encountered pushback from the local community before. Recalling the ďŹ rst year of the festival, held in 2010, and originally dubbed the Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival, Burke said she was picketed by feminist protesters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The second year there was a total local media blackout, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even buy advertising.â&#x20AC;? She added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in a newer market, you have to mind your Ps and Qs, make the show attractive to the local audience. For the third and fourth years of the festival, Burke tried moving the event to Philly.

She says she had male performers on stage at the TLA in 2012 and Plays & Players in 2013. The men were met with booing from the audience. She then took the festival back to Jim Thorpe, â&#x20AC;&#x153;to regroup and try to grow it. I realized I needed to take a slow, steady approach.â&#x20AC;?

In a 2015 interview with A&E website, The 570, Burke said of the brief stint with the show in Philadelphia: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philly has its good points, but they just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get it. Their concept of burlesque is really raunchy. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just not what we do...actually in this little town of Jim Thorpe, our audience is much more reďŹ ned. And theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re more polite, too.â&#x20AC;?

Burke, who works as a custom corset maker and has many queer clients, emphasized her support for LGBT rights. As an ordained clergy, she had waited to perform weddings until 2015 when same-sex mar-

riage was legalized.

So why did she take the route of cancelling the festival?

This was, Burke explained, the ďŹ rst time she had gotten critique from inside the community, and also the ďŹ rst time she had received what she called, â&#x20AC;&#x153;ďŹ&#x201A;at out hate mail.â&#x20AC;?

Burke says she wanted to end the conďŹ&#x201A;ict. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to create further friction.

I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want people to feel like they had to pick sides,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I still had concerns. There were artists Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to choose but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if the fan base is ready for them. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to upset the apple cart.â&#x20AC;?

Burke paused and added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It would have been wrong to just ignore it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but if I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bring the changes they deserve today, maybe Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not the right person to bring forward the cause.â&#x20AC;?

Online, reactions to the cancellation were largely disappointed. Some commentators found Burkeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision an inadequate response to critique.

Others were supportive of Burke, but reticent to share those views openly, citing fear of negative attention. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one performer who had participated in the festival previously said of the situation, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Should she have worded things differently just for social media because, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face it, these days you get called out for everything. And most of the time itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all a huge misunderstanding.â&#x20AC;?

Anja Keister, a performer who grew up in the region and who says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;This Jim Thorpe Burlesque [Festival] is very much rooted in my history as a burlesque performer,â&#x20AC;? disagrees about how conservative the area is. In an interview with PW she said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a queer woman, the actions of this festival both sadden and frustrate me. I fear this whole controversy will make Pennsylvanian burlesque, and Pennsylvania in general, look bad within the performer community."

Many performers and fans bemoaned the loss of the event, which had drawn artists from around the world â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and was one of very few burlesque festivals that did not require an application fee, compensated performers for their acts, provided professional video, photography and even room and board for the weekend. The event also served as a fundraiser for the preservation of its venue, the Mauch Chunk Opera House.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next for Burke? She plans to do one more iteration of her annual Halloween show, Boolesque, which, she notes, had always been gender inclusive. After that, she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My presence will continue to fuel this argument, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be a part of that,â&#x20AC;? she said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to contribute to divisiveness, so this might be my last show completely.â&#x20AC;? BOOKS math of these shootings â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this way of trying to deďŹ&#x201A;ect from the very badness of it but trying to spin it as this positive thing. Before I ďŹ nished writing this book they were marketing Kevlar backpacks to children.

I really enjoyed the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Victimsâ&#x20AC;? sections of the book â&#x20AC;&#x201C; little vignettes of all the shooting victims as the protagonist remembered them. Anna paints these poignant but measured stories of the dead. She even recalls how shitty or unremarkable some of them were, without dismissing the horror of their deaths to bullets. Why did you take this approach?

In case you survive a mass shooting A Temple professorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new novel explores the aftermath of an all-too-familiar school massacre in a small-town Pennsylvania

us van Santâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dark 2004 ďŹ lm â&#x20AC;&#x153;Elephantâ&#x20AC;? presents its mass shooting as the climax of the story. All events build up toward the bloodbath. We are conditioned to process stories of American violence in a similar way, to sleuth through the killerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, to connect the dots from A to B to the gun store, and then, ultimately, to tell ourselves that nothing can be done to prevent this.

Tom McAllister â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Philly-bred author, Temple University English professor (full disclosure: I took a class with him many years ago), occasional Twitter person â&#x20AC;&#x201C; expends less ink on the

violence itself and more on the senseless illogic that follows. The massacre at the heart of his new novel, â&#x20AC;&#x153;How To Be Safe,â&#x20AC;? is over before the book begins. What happens afterward, it turns out, is where the darkness really settles in.

We get the story from Anna Crawford, a high school English teacher who, after getting suspended days prior to the shooting, becomes a person of interest to the police. Once her name is cleared, she begins processing the psychic trauma of what has happened to her life, her town and, most enormously, her country.

Philly Weekly caught up with McAllister to talk it out.

I wanted to reďŹ&#x201A;ect the sorts of things you really know about people in a small town or a neighborhood. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that guy that I see at the deli every week, or the woman who works out next to me at the gym twice a week. You create little stories about them. But it was also important for me to make some of them shitty. I get it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but I kind of hate it, too â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that we have to pretend everyone was an angel.

Everyday gun violence â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially urban gun violence â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is often mentioned in the book. Anna Crawford remarks early on that her family moved to small-town PA where there werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t any people of color, and as she internalizes the events that unfold she mulls over how many bullets go unnoticed in America every day.

Not much of this book was inďŹ&#x201A;uenced by the Trump administration, but this part was.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playing on a pretty classic fear: Annaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family moved to get away from â&#x20AC;&#x153;the gangs.â&#x20AC;?

There are these 400-person towns in central PA that think MS-13 is coming for them, and yet theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably never met a Latino person in their life.

But there was another component. I follow [Temple University gun violence educator] Scott Charles on Twitter. I think heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an important ďŹ gure. He combats a lot of those ideas in a unique way. On the one hand, we should take gun violence in cities more seriously, but taking it seriously doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean treating it like a caricature. The Trump version is turning it into this cartoon where there are drive-bys all the time, which is just another way of ignoring it.

Lots of folks have already pointed out the timely, seemingly prescient stuff in your novel. Student activists start their own type of #NeverAgain movement in the wake of the tragedy. Officials call for trained school guardians with tactical shooting experience. Politicians bloviate. You were writing this book over the span of several years. The book isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so much a call to disarmament How much did reality steal from fiction in as much as it is a diagnosis of the alienating, that time? illogical disease that is gun culture. Were I started taking notes after Sandy Hook, but I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t start actively working on the book until you tempted to take a more forceful stance? a year or two later. A lot of the reviews have said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;prescient,â&#x20AC;? but I feel like a lot of it is repeating shit that has happened. Columbine happened before most of my freshman students were born. This is a generational problem â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and Columbine wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the ďŹ rst, either. Some of the language of the grandstanding politicians is pulled directly from Rubio and others. The language about arming teachers has been done before. The sloganeering they do in the after-

My focus ended up being very much what you just described: the insane cultural choice that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never ďŹ x gun violence so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just deal with it, the bizarre toxic culture around the way we try to approach gun violence, and the issue of masculinity and how it leads to that kind of violence.Q This Q&A has been edited for length and clarity.

Top staffers at the District Attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office continue to depart in the Krasner era â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and plenty of new faces have come on board.

full quarter of the prosecutors and other senior staff at the Philadelphia District Attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce have departed since Larry Krasner took ofďŹ ce with a plan for sweeping reforms.

An analysis of city payroll records shows that out of 335 prosecutorial staff, investigators and senior administrators employed at the end of 2017, 84 staffers have either quit or been asked to leave. The DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce employs more than 500 staffers.

On the campaign trail, Krasner promised that his pledges to bring radical, progressive

reforms to top prosecutors ofďŹ ce would attract new talent. To some degree this has held true: at least 61 new staffers have joined the ofďŹ ce since Krasnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s January inauguration, most at either the very top or bottom of the ofďŹ ce food chain.

The new hires have done little to dissuade many of Krasnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s critics, who have long warned that his efforts to bring a softer touch to an ofďŹ ce dominated for decades by an unwavering â&#x20AC;&#x153;law & orderâ&#x20AC;? philosophy would eventually drive experienced prosecutors away from the ofďŹ ce. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The ofďŹ ce has lost a lot of experience and institutional knowledge in the last three months,â&#x20AC;? said former ADA Mark Gilson,

who was let go by Krasner in January. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From what I see and what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard, that has not been replaced. Victims of crime and citizens of the city will suffer for it.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true that virtually every senior deputy under interim DA Kelley Hodge has since left the ofďŹ ce â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with the sole exception of ofďŹ ce vet Sybil Murphy, whom Krasner appointed as interim supervisor of special investigations. However, the majority of assistant unit chiefs held on to their positions. Out of 103 veteran ADAs, only 34 have left the ofďŹ ce since last year.

None of the ofďŹ ceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s investigative staff detectives or police appear to have left the ofďŹ ce.

But criminal justice advocates familiar with the transition have praise for the new dynamic in Krasnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce.

Dr. Toorjo Ghose, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice, and CEO of The Center for Carceral Communities, attends newly implemented meetings between top DA staffers and criminal justice experts like himself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are some amazing new faces and some amazing old faces on Krasnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

staff,â&#x20AC;? Ghose says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not like everybody is on the same page. But everybody is there because they are dedicated to the bigger cause. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re bringing in the old regime strategies and the new regime strategies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and from a practitionerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s standpoint, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how change is made.â&#x20AC;?

Ghose noted that turnover is common between administrations, and commended new hires like Robert Listenbee, Jr., a former Obama ofďŹ cial who now serves as Krasnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst deputy DA, among others.

It was not immediately clear how many employees were asked to resign, how many departed the ofďŹ ce in protest of Krasnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision, and how many simply moved on to other opportunities. For example, Tanner Rouse, an experienced homicide prosecutor, left that position to run for ofďŹ ce.

The Philadelphia DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce also employs approximately 200 additional support employees â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including clerks, paralegals ofďŹ ce assistants, interns and IT professionals. Those positions were not included in this analysis. The DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce did not return a request by press time to conďŹ rm the roster of former employees and new hires.

Krasner made headlines for aggressively pursuing the resignation of a string of top staffers at the end of his ďŹ rst week in ofďŹ ce, leading to the sudden departure of nearly 30 employees.

The mass layoffs echoed a pattern established by other district attorneys whose political campaigns were backed by criminal justice reform organizations linked to billionaire George Soros. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The only way to change the culture in the DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce is to remove folks who foster that culture and who are the descendants of the Lynne Abraham and Ron Castille and Seth Williams style of prosecution,â&#x20AC;? says Jondhi Harrell, executive director of the Center for Returning Citizens, a nonproďŹ t that helps with the reentry process into society for those returning from incarceration. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Krasner started that process with the ďŹ ring of top prosecutorial staff in his ďŹ rst week and, since then, other folks have left once they realized that agenda was gone.â&#x20AC;?

Indeed, Krasner had said openly during his campaign that he would seek to dump staff who were opposed to his platform of seeking sentencing and bail reform, and greater police witness integrity. However, the DA has since been cagey about disclosing details surrounding the shakeup.

Gilson added that additional staff have resigned since the compilation of payroll records for the ďŹ rst quarter of the year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including veteran staffers like Michael Bonner and Ali Borgatti. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot more people have left just in the last few weeks,â&#x20AC;? he said. Destinyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dynamic duo LA rockers FRENSHIP head to Philly in a continued pursuit of a dream

Both aspired to make it big in the music industry, and working a dead end retail gig as sales associates at Lululemon was far from the dream. Total strangers prior to their stint at the athletic clothing store, the two became fast friends as they bonded over mutual interests and life struggles.

For Sunderland and Hite, who hail from small towns in Colorado and Washington respectively, embarking on their ďŹ rst-ever cross country headlining tour is the culmination of years of blood, sweat and tears. Before moving to L.A., both were chasing seemingly unachievable dreams.

Sunderland longed to be a DJ, while singer-songwriter Hiteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s audiences were often limited to local coffee shop goers.

The two were 1,000 miles apart, but a major uproot and chance hiring at lululemon brought them together in what can only be described as serendipity. Outside of work, they hung out regularly, quickly realizing how well their personalities complemented each other. Since neither was making much progress in his individual endeavors, they decided it would be worthwhile to make music together. What did they have to lose? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were at our wits end trying to rethink our whole music careers,â&#x20AC;? Sunderland reďŹ&#x201A;ected.

Going into the experience, the duo was open to anything when it came to its sound. Hite still remembers his ďŹ rst suggestion like it was yesterday â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s try to be Mumford & Sons meets Skrillex.â&#x20AC;? As interesting as that wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been (maybe the next EP?), what they unintentionally landed on was something rarely found in the industry â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an honest and raw yet catchy mixture of genres. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We both had such drastically different tastes,â&#x20AC;? Sunderland said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You round us together and you get something unique, and FRENSHIP was born.â&#x20AC;?

The duo started off strong, crafting their ďŹ rst song â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kids,â&#x20AC;? followed by numerous singles including â&#x20AC;&#x153;Morrison,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nowhereâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Knives.â&#x20AC;?

But things werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t taking off as quickly as theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d hoped. In a last-ditch attempt to get FRENSHIP off the ground, Sunderland and Hite put some PR money behind their songs â&#x20AC;&#x153;Carpetâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Capsize,â&#x20AC;? both of which were released in 2016. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were running out of money, things werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really going that well,â&#x20AC;? Sunderland reďŹ&#x201A;ected. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was kind of our last effort before we had to ďŹ gure out what we were going to do again.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Carpetâ&#x20AC;? had a fair amount of success. But it was nothing compared to that of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Capsize,â&#x20AC;? which went absolutely viral after its appearance on Spotifyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s New Music Friday. The rhythmic jam featuring Emily Warren racked up nearly 410 million streams, landed a spot on Top 40 radio and, most importantly, got FRENSHIP on peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s radar.

The following year was a whirlwind. FRENSHIP earned the No. 2 Breakout Artist nod for 2016 on Spotify and a Shazam 2017 Emerging Artist award, recognitions that made it an in-demand breakthrough act at concerts and festivals around the globe. In addition to playing Lollapalooza Chicago and Outside Lands Music Festival, the duo opened for indie band Bastille on their European and U.S. treks.

After months on the road, Sunderland and Hite craved a serene space to clear their heads and re-acquaint themselves with the songwrit-

ing process. Leaving its monster streaming, radio and touring success behind, FRENSHIP ventured to Ojai, Calif., where it let the creative juices ďŹ&#x201A;ow. The result was the duoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s single â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love Somebody,â&#x20AC;? which received 3.5 million streams in its ďŹ rst month.

The song began as an ode to Sunderlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ex-lover whom he wanted to send off with a heartfelt song. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kind of saying it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work out but I hope you ďŹ nd happiness with somebody else,â&#x20AC;? he explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like the goodbye song I never wrote.â&#x20AC;?

For Hite, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love Somebodyâ&#x20AC;? conjured up an outlook on life and love he wishes for people even at their very youngest. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My nephew was 1 year old at the time we wrote it, and I remember thinking the song could be ascribed for what I hope for him â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to feel joy, to feel pain, to experience all that life has to offer and, at the end of the day, to love and be loved by somebody,â&#x20AC;? he said.

FRENSHIP ďŹ nds beauty in that the track holds separate meaning for both members, which is something they hope listeners experience as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like the fact that it invites different interpretations,â&#x20AC;? Hite said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The best songs are always perceived one way by one person and a completely different way by somebody else. When we write, the binding thing in the end is that it means something to both of us.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love Somebodyâ&#x20AC;? will surely be a fan favorite during FRENSHIPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tour, which kicked off April 3 in Kansas City, Mo. Attendees can also expect to hear hits off the duoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s EP Truce such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;1,000 Nights,â&#x20AC;? and of course its latest single â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good Morning, Goodbye,â&#x20AC;? which dropped two weeks ago.

Despite FRENSHIPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s somewhat mellow vibe, Sunderland and Hite promise a concert chock full of energy and...choreography? â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a couple of steps we hit every night,â&#x20AC;? Hite laughed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun overall the show,â&#x20AC;? Sunderland added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think it helps make a lot of the music make a bit more sense. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where people will start to fully understand us, when they see us live.â&#x20AC;? Q

The Cactus Blossoms

Two brothers, who started blazing their trail as a cover band, have blossomed, so to speak, into a full-fledged band with a host of original songs with a sound that pays homage to music of yesteryear. Hand to Hand festival plans to focus on the art not the pomp of the circus

orget the red noses, oversized shoes and colorful suspenders, because these clowns are coming in cool.

Stepping away from traditional circus beliefs which are generally (and oft-times negatively) associated with pandering and animal exploitation, Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s upcoming â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hand to Handâ&#x20AC;? festival plans to take another step toward the legitimization of contemporary circus arts.

Powered by the Circadium School of Contemporary Circus, FringeArts will catapultlaunch the festival debut of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hand to Handâ&#x20AC;? on May 29-June 3. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the ďŹ rst pairing between FringeArts, the organization that provides a plat-

form for contemporary artists, and the Circadium School, Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst institution for higher education in contemporary circus arts. They are teaming up for a topsy-turvy, high-ďŹ&#x201A;ying celebration of contemporary circus arts on the FringeArts stage and in the adjacent, outdoor Haas Biergarten.

The festival includes performances by Circadium students, Barcode Circus Company and local artists, as well as an outdoor Circus Midway. Not for walking the straight-and-narrow tightrope â&#x20AC;&#x201C; metaphorically speaking, of course â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the festival highlights the artistry of circus and dismantles any three-ring-circus stereotypes of red-and-white tents, lion tamers and the classic pie-throwing.

FringeArts communications coordinator Hugh Wilkofsky even described the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headlining act, award-winning Barcode Circus Company, as â&#x20AC;&#x153;very edgyâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;very modernâ&#x20AC;? in the world of contemporary circus.

As traditional American circuses are on the decline â&#x20AC;&#x201C; highlighted by the close of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus after 146 years inside the Big Top last May â&#x20AC;&#x201C; contemporary circus seems to be gaining traction in the United States. According to Wilkofsky, contemporary circus art already has a long-established, vibrant culture abroad, particularly in Canada and Europe. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Traditional American circuses] are packing it up, and some people think that signals an end to circus in the U.S., but really it's just a turning of the corner to a more contemporary work, which is actually sort of behind the curve,â&#x20AC;? explained Wilkofsky, whose Philly-based FringeArts has long been an organization that provides a platform for contemporary artists of different

mediums.

Kicking off the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hand to Handâ&#x20AC;? festival is the Mt. Airy circus pioneers of Circadium with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Circadium Innovations.â&#x20AC;? During the show, the inaugural class of the school, which opened its doors just last year, will essentially perform its capstone projects at Fringe. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There really is no comparable festival like this in the U.S.,â&#x20AC;? said Wilkofsky.

While both Barcode Circus Company and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Circadium: Innovationsâ&#x20AC;? are $10 tickets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Barcode tickets will go up to $15 sometime mid-April â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Test Flights and Midway are free.

Test Flights, which Wilkofsky likens to FringeArts monthly â&#x20AC;&#x153;Scratch Night,â&#x20AC;? will highlight the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s circus artists. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think we have a really strong circus artist community in Philadelphia, and I think in recent years we have been seeing it build as Philadelphia's School Circus Arts and [its degree program] Circadium have been growing,â&#x20AC;? Wilkofsky relayed of the talent that will be showcased at Test Flights on Monday, June 3.

Wilkofsky warned that Test Flights may not be age appropriate for the little ones, since, as he described it, the cross-collaborative content is â&#x20AC;&#x153;edgy, theatrical, experimental.â&#x20AC;? Despite the claim, Wilkofsky rated everything else as familyfriendly. He went on to explain that while FringeArts usually generates a young professional crowd, they are trying to expand its age-demographic.

For an interactive experience and gateway into the world of contemporary circus arts, the outdoor Circus Midway will commandeer the Haas Biergarten on Saturday, June 2. The afternoon will sport juggling, aerials, wirewalking and acrobatics workshops and demonstrations. Children and adults are welcome to try various equipment and circus practices. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It's a chance for audiences to really try circus arts for themselves, because it is such a captivating, but a little bit daunting discipline,â&#x20AC;? explained Wilkofsky. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But contemporary art [really] is super accessible, and you don't need any prior understanding to enjoy a lot of the stuff.â&#x20AC;?

Starting at 11am, the timing of Circus Midway aligns with Barcode Circus Companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last performance at 2pm. The Barcode Circus Company will also have 8pm performances from May 31-June 1. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ideally, people can come and hang out, try their hands at the circus work, and then see these world class artists, showing how far you can take it,â&#x20AC;? said Wilkofsky, who is most excited to watch Barcodeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s acclaimed Russian bar routine, where a performer does gravity-defying tricks on a polevault stick held up by two people.

While the performances will dazzle and delight, Wilkofsky praises the artistry of contemporary circus for its ability to support the showmanship with substance: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rather than just a focus on spectacle, it is also a work that is creating something that is relevant and speaks to something beyond just the general awe of seeing somebody ďŹ&#x201A;ying through the air.â&#x20AC;? I started dating this past year, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not really clicking with anyone. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a lot of ďŹ rst dates, but nothing beyond that. My problem is that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d really love to get laid. The idea of casual sex and one-night stands sounds greatâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but in reality, moving that quickly with someone I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know or trust freaks me out, causes me to shut down, and prevents me from enjoying anything. Even thinking about going home with someone causes me to panic.

When I was in a relationship, the sex was great. But now that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m single, it seems like this big, scary thing. Is it possible to get laid without feeling freaked out? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Sexual Comfort And Reassurance Eludes Dame It is possible for you to get laid without feeling freaked out.

The answerâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;how you go home with someone without panickingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;is so obvious, SCARED, that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m guessing your therapist has already suggested it: Have sex with someone you know and trust. You didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any issues having sex with your ex because you knew and trusted him. For your own emotional safety, and to avoid recovery setbacks, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to have to ďŹ nd someone willing to get to know youâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;someone willing to make an emotional investment in youâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;before you can have sex again.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably thought to yourself, â&#x20AC;&#x153;But everyone else is just jumping into bed with strangers and having amazing sexual experiences!â&#x20AC;? And while it is true that many people are capable of doing just that, at least as many or more are incapable of having impulsive one-night stands because they too have a history of trauma, or because they have other psychological, physical, or logistical issues that make one-night stands impossible.

(Some folks, of course, have no interest in

one-night stands.) Your trauma left you with this added burden, SCARED, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to minimize your legitimate frustration or your anger. It sucks, and I fucking hate the people who victimized you. But it may help you feel a little better about having to make an investment in someone before becoming intimateâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which really isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the worst thing in the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;if you can remind yourself that you arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t alone. Demisexuals, other victims of trauma, people with body-image issues, people whose sexual interests are so stigmatized they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel comfortable disclosing them to people theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve just metâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;lots of people face the same challenge you do.

Something else to bear in mind: Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not unheard of for someone reentering the dating scene to have some difďŹ culty making new connections at ďŹ rst. The trick is to keep going on dates until you ďŹ nally click with someone.

In other words, SCARED, give yourself a break and take your time. Also, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hesitate to tell the men you date that you need to get to know a person before jumping into bed with him. That will scare some guys off, but only those guys who werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t willing to get to know youâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and those arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t guys you would have felt safe fucking anyway, right?

So be open and honest, keep going on those ďŹ rst dates, and eventually youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ďŹ nd yourself on a ďŹ fth date with a guy you can think about taking home without feeling panicked. Good luck.

Through the generosity of the Foundation, the Methodist Hospital Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit purchased telemetry equipment that allows it to broaden patient care to include those requiring cardiac monitoring. The Augustinian Defenders of the Rights of the Poor (ADROP) Unity Clinic is a place where the uninsured and underinsured can find primary care at no cost. It could not have happened without early support from the Foundation. Several days a week, Methodist/Jefferson Parish Nurse Alicia Parker, RN, brings on-site resources to the congregation of Tindley Temple United Methodist Church and its community through the Parish Nursing Program. It has been a place for consultations, screenings, immunizations, health fairs, health education and referrals since 2001, when a Foundation grant initiated the program at this location. $35,/
