S

ince becoming a dad, my weekends have irrevocably changed.

Weekends once ďŹ lled with late-night social gatherings and much-needed downtime have been replaced with playdates, birthday parties and watching the same Pixar movie over and over â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and over â&#x20AC;&#x201C; again.

However, this past weekend, while at yet another birthday party, I had a really insightful, albeit all-too-short conversation with another dad on race, racism â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and how the topic has seemed to saturate everything from the dinner table to social media feeds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; putting people at their wits end. As weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all aware, with this current political climate, hell, I say it, this current Administration has busted closet doors wide open on almost everything â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and it appears most of the explosive charge has been attached to race relations both domestically and abroad.

There are people calling the cops on others for the sake of feeling threatened by a person of color, there are people of color making names for themselves exacerbating the topic across any and all mediums to the point of nauseam.

But on the ďŹ&#x201A;ip, the conversation â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at least in the lifetime of a large number of us â&#x20AC;&#x201C; has never seen the topic this polarized.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gone from the days where the works of Dr. Martin Luther King, and the Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were almost at a romanticized pitch to seeing much of what they preached regarding bias, bigotry and segregation thrust back into practice, all seemingly highlighted by a media collective that canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get enough.

So with all that said, the question this dad posed as we watched our toddlers from two different racial backgrounds at play was a fair one: is all of this heightened awareness on racism in America making the situation worse â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or ultimately better â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for future generations, like, you know, our kids?

I think for me, personally, the jury is still out.

The cliche is that things get worse before they get better, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know, short of another Charlottesville, if they can get any worse. The fact that as a black person, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fall asleep in a common area of a university youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re paying thousands of dollars without someone think-

ing youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a homeless vagrant or be forced to smile and wave or have the cops called on you for being â&#x20AC;&#x153;suspiciousâ&#x20AC;? is arguably one of the more egregious forms of closet racism one can ever imagine.

Conversely, this hyperfocus on race has also made for a profoundly large number of white people go over the top to prove that they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t part of the problem. Regardless of color, one should never have to feel uncomfortable in their own skin, and I think for the ďŹ rst time in a long time, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing examples of it happening repeatedly â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on both sides.

But is that good? Will that evoke change? I believe in some small way itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s allowed for the question to be raised. I think the sheer ridiculous heights people have gone to be a racist asshole have really made some people â&#x20AC;&#x201C; again on both sides â&#x20AC;&#x201C; really take a look at how they view the outside world and people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look like them. But at the same time, we live in a world where bias is ingrained and passed down through generations. Think about it, as you read this, there is some white parent pissed off that his son got passed up for some sport over a person of color and is spewing familiar stereotypes that due to the black kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s superior genetic makeup, he got passed over and planting that seed.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much easier than realizing that despite all the two-a-days or dollars spent on personal training, maybe his son just isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t very good.

On the ďŹ&#x201A;ip, that black kid picked for the team? Probably hearing from his parent that white people are always gonna get picked over you and that you have to work extra hard to prove yourself, that off the bat youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always going to be second place unless you prove without a doubt that you deserve to be in ďŹ rst. Seed.

Planted.

Frankly, both arguments are fucking exhausting.

People are never going to look past someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race or socioeconomic status and see them simply as another member of the human race. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wonderful thought and a world Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d love to live in and have my family live in, but I live in reality. I think regardless of whether you side as more logical or emotional, we can agree on that.

But the question of whether thinking that these arguments will start to bring us closer to utopia is a good one. If not in my lifetime, my utmost wish is for the lifetime of those two boys playing with abandon, and due to childlike innocence, both completely in the dark of what their fathers were talking about. But now Pennsylvania is seeing a notable spike in babies named â&#x20AC;&#x153;Carsonâ&#x20AC;? across the commonwealth, according to an NBC Sports analysis of Social Security data. There were 301 newborn Carsons in 2017 (the 37th most popular boyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name in the state), up from 181 Carsons in 2015, the year before the QB was drafted. The name has actually surpassed â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chaseâ&#x20AC;? in popularity for the ďŹ rst time since 2008.

Dillahunty is one of 327,320 Philadelphians (about 20 percent of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population) who are defined as â&#x20AC;&#x153;food insecure,â&#x20AC;? meaning they lack the proper amount of food to lead healthy lives.

Funeral for a tragedy Compassionate Philadelphians have emptied their pockets to help pay for the funeral costs of Julian Angelucci, the 11-year-old boy who was fatally struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle on May 18 in South Philadelphia, near 10th and Shunk streets.

Last we checked, the GoFundMe page set up by the victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister raised nearly $19,000, far above its $15,000 goal. Police and the District Attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce say charges are likely forthcoming in the incident.

Like many neighborhoods throughout the city, Brewerytown is seeing the merger of old meets new but like many neighborhoods, the integration is slow.

he noise of construction starts as early as 5 a.m. even though itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not supposed to.

Post-it notes on the doors of abandoned homes and signs tacked on telephone pole read: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cash for your home. Please call.â&#x20AC;?

Cars hustling for morning commutes or evening rush hours are forced to wait for cranes, supply trucks and double-parked utility trucks to haul supplies down almost every street, perhaps none more than a mile-long section of Girard Avenue, Brewerytownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main strip.

Longtime Brewerytown resident Alia Williams says that while she welcomes the change coming into her neighborhood, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit of trepidation in whether or not her family will be able to remain due to rising taxes.

Brewerytown is changing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it has been for years.

However, some things seem like long-standing traditions. The same group of men laughs together outside the Blue Jay Diner each evening. They appear to be old friends. Neighbors chit-chat in the street, a duo of charming women goes door-to-door reading verses from the Bible to anyone willing to listen.

However like many of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emerging neighborhoods, long-time residents and businesses are witnessing pricey, new condos, restaurants, craft beer bars, coffeehouses and a ton of new faces cozying up in an effort to share the same blanket.

With all of the new development, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to not say that gentriďŹ cation of a large swath of a multi-cultural section of North Philadelphia is imminent, if not already apparent.

Brewerytown got its name from the number of breweries that operated here in the late 19th and early 20th century. Located close to the river, this area ďŹ&#x201A;ourished, attracting architects, businesses, and residents. At one point, when the city hosted over 700 breweries, Brewerytown was the home to many of them. However, like many neighborhoods fueled by the factory boom and washed out when many of them closed, Brewerytown suffered from economic loss and subsequent depression.

Alia Williams, 42, grew up in Brewerytown.

As a child, she spent most of her time playing in Fairmount Park with her neighbors. However, as more drug dealers moved in, many of those neighbors moved out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At one time, I remember that there were 15 abandoned houses just on my street,â&#x20AC;? Williams recalled.

Williams moved out in her 20s, but her mother still lives in the house where she grew up. She said her mom is worried about property taxes going up, and is ready to move because she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know her neighbors anymore. But today, looking fondly at her old street, Williams mentioned how different it looked lined with trees and with almost no abandoned houses.

Nancy Flynn and her husband moved to Brewerytown Square in 2006 from Roxborough in their ďŹ fties. Their housing complex was newly developed, taking up residence in a formerly abandoned Acme parking lot.

According to Flynn, at the time, the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s announcement of its 10-year tax abatement program was a huge draw, much as it still is, in addition to Brewerytownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proximity to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Kelly Drive.

Nancy knew she may not be welcomed by long-term residents at ďŹ rst. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In 2006, it was not unusual to see homes and stores with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;NO GENTRIFICATIONâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; signs in the windows,â&#x20AC;? said Flynn. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We made a concerted effort to say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hello,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;good morningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;how are you?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; to every person we passed. I am happy to report that now at least nine out of 10 people say hello back. I think it is a success story.â&#x20AC;?

FEATURE Much-needed necessities Flynn says they are happy with all the new businesses around the neighborhood, but say the Aldi supermarket at 30th and Girard is a gift from above. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brewerytown went far too long without a supermarket,â&#x20AC;? Flynn said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was sad to see elderly people getting off buses with bags of groceries from their shopping trips to surrounding neighborhoods.â&#x20AC;?

This would be great for the future of Brewerytown so that we all can better understand one another, and truly operate as one community and not just appear to be [living that way] on the surface.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; QUENTIN ODRICK, BREWERYTOWN RESIDENT

The commercial strip on Brewerytownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s section of Girard has long been lined with abandoned shops, trash and liquor stores.

But over the last several years, diverse and community-based businesses have been opening their doors.

The Monkey and The Elephant Cafe has become a staple for coffee-lovers in the area.

They serve fresh baked goods and quality coffee and its nonproďŹ t approach is staffed with former foster youth who have aged out of the system.

The local yoga studio, Yoga & Movement Sanctuary, offers low-cost community classes, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;pay-what-you-wishâ&#x20AC;? classes every week.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a newly-opened Dollar Store, cycling studio and a gym. Pam Hetherington, the owner of Brewerytownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dance studio, Soundspace, says she is quite happy with her location. She hopes to keep growing her community outreach program, The Philadelphia Community Tap Project, which offers low-cost and free tap dancing for kids and adults.

Girard is also home to Le Cat Cafe, an organization that houses homeless cats until they can be adopted. Rybrew, a restaurant with a large selection of various craft, domestic and international beers, hosts free open mic nights on Thursdays. Pizza Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offers free PBR with the purchase of

A host of new shops and restaurants are sprouting up along Brewerytownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s section of Girard Avenue. a pizza on Tuesdays, and Crime and Punishment Brewery often holds fundraisers for local charities.

Tim McAdams, the owner of Best In Show Dog Grooming, has been in Brewerytown since 2004. He believes the new businesses have been assets to the community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my opinion, all people like better quality merchandise, more nutritious food, and a higher level of service,â&#x20AC;? said McAdams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting that with the newer businesses, and the community is responding very positively.â&#x20AC;?

Replaced, not revitalized Quentin Odrick, 32, has lived in Brewerytown his entire life. While he has always enjoyed his neighborhood, he says that, like many longtime residents, people have no choice but to as McAdams called it, â&#x20AC;&#x153;respond positivelyâ&#x20AC;? and embrace the gentriďŹ cation of the neighborhood.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I 110 percent believe that Brewerytown is currently undergoing gentriďŹ cation. It is inevitable at this point,â&#x20AC;? Odrick said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sad for those that were already having a challenging time managing their homes. These are the people who usually are the ďŹ rst to sell [their homes] for $70-80k, and must ďŹ nd somewhere else to live due to rising property taxes.â&#x20AC;?

While he still maintains close relationships with his long-term neighbors, Odrick says he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t formed relationships with any of the new residents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve noticed that nobody hangs on their steps or seems to have a desire to get to know their neighbors,â&#x20AC;? he noted.

A Brewerytown resident who wished to remain anonymous, says he and his wife are preparing to move out. The young couple lived in Brewerytown for a few years but said it has been difďŹ cult to get to know the neighbors.

He wants to go somewhere and start a family

where he can have the same neighbors for 20 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing is just a neighborhood getting replaced, not revitalized,â&#x20AC;? he said.

According to Odrick, the new stores on Girard seem positive for the neighborhood, although he knows many of his long-term neighbors donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel that way. He would like to see more neighborhood integration, block clean-up days, and communication between new homeowners and long-term residents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe that integration and communication can break racial barriers and the two cultures within the neighborhood,â&#x20AC;? Feminista Jones is back for the second year in a row to host a night of sex friendly conversation, discussions and performances at SeXx Interactiveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Sextopia on May 23.

Sex is good, people The fifth installment of SeXx Interactiveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sextopia kicks off this month

In regard to the state of sexual freedom, this is the sentiment from one of its foremost advocates, Elicia Gonzales, the co-founder of sex-positive Philly based collective SeXx Interactive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have to do all we can to imagine, envision, create, heal if we are going to survive... and ideally thrive.â&#x20AC;?

In that regard however, Gonzales has been doing her part, as one of the organizers of SeXx Interactiveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual rundown of events, now heading into its ďŹ fth year in Philadelphia.

On May 23, the group will again host Sextopia at Franky Bradleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, an evening of lightning talks and live performances by community members who are interested in sharing ideas and experiences about sexuality.

The lightning talks will take place from 7-9 p.m. and will be hosted for the second year by writer and activist Feminista Jones. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got involved with SEXx because I believe in working collaboratively to change the way we think about sex,â&#x20AC;? she says.

What does she anticipate with this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theme of Sextopia? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are imagining the future of sex â&#x20AC;&#x201C; what it could be if sexual liberation was the rule and people were free to be who they are and make pleasurable decisions for themselves.â&#x20AC;?

Full disclosure: This author is also on the organizing committee. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We live in such a sex-negative, shamebased society â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where access to accurate, healing, pleasure-based sexuality information is virtually non-existent,â&#x20AC;? Gonzales says about the original concept behind the collective and its events. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought that it would be important to collectively create a space where

sexuality can be discussed and explored. I also wanted to make sure that anyone would have access to this information â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not just folks with the privilege to pay to attend college or a workshop.â&#x20AC;?

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event features quick discussions on everything from the future of fetishes to a world without proms, and sexuality education for people with cognitive disabilities.

There is a special emphasis on the impact of FOSTA-SESTA, recent legislation that purports to combat sex trafďŹ cking but has proven to make it harder to rescue trafďŹ cked people and more dangerous to be a sex worker, in addition to curtailing online free speech rights.

Dr. Alex Bove will be presenting on some of the ďŹ ndings of his dissertation on the future of masculinity and presenters range from artists to academics, activists and everyday people â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all sharing their experiences.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have been a presenter at every SEXx event so far. It's one of my favorite nights of the year. I love the mix of topics and the diversity of the presenters,â&#x20AC;? said Bove. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we consider things too taboo to say in public...we limit people's freedom to express themselves fully. This is not good for democracy. And sexuality is one of the most important aspects of our lives. We need to be able to discuss important things candidly and openly. That's what grown-ups do.â&#x20AC;?

Dr. Zelaika Hepworth Clarke, a renowned professor and clinical sexologist at Goddard College who focused on African-American sexuality, is also scheduled to present. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to be involved to highlight a perspective that hasn't been presented yet,â&#x20AC;? said Clarke. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oftentimes, I am subjugated to politics of respectability as well as overcompensating for hyper-sexualization of my multiethnic body by asexualizing myselfâ&#x20AC;ŚI felt that this platform would allow me to bring my whole authentic self to a performance/presentation I am passionate about.â&#x20AC;?

Not all of the topics are scholarly.

For example, the hosts of the comedy show Porn Stash will be talking about what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like to watch porn in a room full of people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is so much shame attached to sex in America, and sexuality is often used as a weapon to hurt others rather than a bridge to connect us,â&#x20AC;? says comedian Ralph Andracchio. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Any opportunity we have to gather together and talk about sex in a non-judgmental space and help people learn a little more about themselves is a step toward making sex a little less shameful and a whole lot more fun.â&#x20AC;?

Infamously racist lawyer Aaron Schlossberg attended prestigious Main Line institution

lthough the latest story of blatant racism making national headlines hails from New York, roots can be traced back to the Greater Philadelphia Region.

Aaron Schlossberg, the attorney receiving backlash from all sides following his tirade inside a Midtown Manhattan eatery, is actually a Philadelphia native who attended prestigious all-boys Main Line preparatory, the Haverford School.

According to Schlossbergâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s LinkedIn page, he attended the institution from 1983-94 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; essentially kindergarten to 12th grade â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and was a part of the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cum laude society.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a dark spot on a school that is proactively working to create a more diverse and inclusive environment, as reported in Haverford Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own student newspaper, The Index.

A report in the publication dated March 8, highlighted an assembly that was held in the aftermath of what the administration referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;increasing concerns over the use of racially insensitive language both on and off [campus] and some reports of some social situations in which there were exclusionary practices, perhaps attributed to race,â&#x20AC;? according to the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dean of students, Mark Fifer.

It was also noted that in the months leading up to the assembly, led by Fifer, Matt Green, head of Haverfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Upper School, which serves students from grades 8-12, and English school teacher Luqman Kolade, the administration noted an â&#x20AC;&#x153;uptick of complaints about racial slurs and racially insensitive language.â&#x20AC;?

The school itself can run upward of $38,000 annually to attend grades pre-K to 12.

Schlossberg is the antithesis of what the school is trying to represent, but arguably its most extreme case of an alumnus tied to the ongoing saga of racism, bigotry and antiequality sentiment empowered by the election of Donald Trump as president. Schlossbergâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most recent tirade is just among a slew that have been uncovered since the story broke.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attended white nationalist rallies, allegedly assaulted people on the streets of Manhattan, spewing insensitive comments, and has routinely berated Hispanics, his latest inside that Fresh Kitchen, upset over employees talking to a customer in Spanish.

But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably the story of Willie Morris, that arrives as one of the more shocking runins with Schlossberg. Morris took to YouTube to recall an encounter heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d had with Schlossberg in 2016, where the attorney threatens to call the police on Morris â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a recurrence weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re now ďŹ nding a theme among racists in America â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in addition to hurling insults at Morris, most notably calling the Massachusetts-born man an â&#x20AC;&#x153;ugly fucking foreigner.â&#x20AC;?

Morris took it in stride, saying after the video was posted about Schlossbergâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ugly fucking foreigner comment: â&#x20AC;&#x153;the ďŹ rst part is debatable, but the second part is not.â&#x20AC;?â&#x20AC;&#x2DC; In the aftermath of the Starbucks incident in which two African-American males were taken into custody by police after a manager called the cops on them for using the bathroom without purchasing anything, there was a hope that Philly wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have another tie to a incident of racism and insensitivity on a national scale.

Sourced ingredients from the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s urban gardens for its fine dining establishments is happening more than you might think

f the kitchen staff of the SoďŹ tel, the posh Center City hotel in the heart of Rittenhouse, run out of ingredients to make one of their signature salads or entrees, they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to go far to replenish ingredients.

They only need to take the service elevator about 15 ďŹ&#x201A;oors up.

Courtesy of a partnership with Philadelphia preparatory school, Girard College, earlier this month the hotel unveiled its brand new rooftop garden complete with 3,000 pounds of soil ripe with recycled rainwater producing many of the vegetables and herbs found in the hotelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pair of French-inspired eateries, Chez Colette and LibertĂŠ Lounge.

The completely sustainable garden features radishes, jalapenos, grape tomatoes, basil, beets and is complete with eight bee hives that, according to the SoďŹ tel, are home to more than a half million bees exclusively producing fresh honey for the hotel. The partnership is

fueled by executive chef Edward Hancock, who oversees the menu in both establishments, and powered by freshman students from Girardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health and sciences classes.

In addition to working alongside the students to produce the garden, Hancock took it a step further to show them the fruits of their labor (pun intended). He gave the students a ďŹ rsthand look in inside the kitchen, making many of the hotelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s signature dishes with the ingredients planted on the roof â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in addition to dinner. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a pleasure working with the students from Girard College and exchanging gardening knowledge with them,â&#x20AC;? Hancock said.

Angela Bauer, SoďŹ telâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general manager added: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The garden is an example of how we use sustainable resources to provide food for our restaurants. It was a wonderful opportunity to invite this neighborhood school to participate in our gardening initiative.â&#x20AC;?

The beet salad ($12) on the Liberteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lunch and dinner menu? Planted with care by Girard students. The carrots and watermelon radish in the braised short

ribs ($24) or the fennel in the seared salmon ($24)? Yep, Girard.

But it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t only extend to the plate. Many of the herbs are used to create signature cocktails, using locally sourced spirits. The aptly titled Rooftop Garden cocktail, which consists of Bluecoat Gin, uses basil and honey from the roof. The Lavender Martini? Vodka from Philadelphia Distilling paired with homemade lavender syrup. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This has been an amazing experience to expose our ninth-grade health students to the sustainable urban gardening program of SoďŹ telâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rooftop, said Monet Anderson, a science teacher at Girard College. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now, through this partnership, they have learned how gardening supplies a hotelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food and beverage operations.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work Girard College already does within the towering walls of its sprawling campus, as the school is home to one of the largest urban gardens on a school campus in the city. With 25 in-ground plots and four fruit trees, Girardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s community garden produces about 1,500 pounds of produce a year, creating many of the meals for the campus, in addition to selling much of the produce at a weekly farm stand in the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fairmount-based neighborhood.

This is perhaps the latest in a growing trend of area restaurants pairing with community gardens and greenhouses to serve up dishes provided by sustainable urban gardens. Earlier this month, Rocco Cima, owner of fresh food eateries, FUEL announced a pairing with celebrity chef Brian Duffy (DIY Networkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Date Plate, Spike TVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bar Rescue) to create 17 new menu additions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; many of which are priced at $10 or less â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sourced from a community greenhouse in North Philadelphia. Another city chain of restaurants, Marathon, has been one of the pioneers in this trend, sourcing much of its produce from an organic farm in the city that serves all six of its locations.

In June, Center City is scheduled to have its own urban food garden.

Farm for the City, an initiative by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, will create an interactive food awareness installation on Thomas Paine Plaza. Slated to run through the summer and into the fall months, Farm for the City plans to shed a light on food security, and show that urban agriculture can sustain many of the city neighborhoods.

It has a level of optimism, of collective spirituality around what we can all achieve. For me, you want to ďŹ nd ways to encourage that kind of joy.

As the countdown begins to the start of the new season, how was the first festival?

A conversation with PIFAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artistic director, and why this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event plans to bring exactly that

rt lovers of all disciplines: the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts has returned.

Taking the stage that is Philly, artists from around the globe will gift our fair city with a multitude of performances, a handful of which are completely free of charge. For 11 days beginning May 31, city-dwellers and out-of-towners can pop open their regimented bubbles and gain exposure to the world beyond via comedy, music, dance, theater and acrobatics.

Expect to once again witness the unusual, the bewildering and the awe-inspiring pieces that range from contemporary to experimental â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to very experimental. With 50-

plus performances, packed with gut-wrenching heights, profound narratives and sheep â&#x20AC;&#x201D; yep, you read that right â&#x20AC;&#x201C; PW caught up with Jay Wahl, the artistic director of both PIFA and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, to gain insight on the upcoming festival in all its eccentric awesomeness.

How did you get the idea for the festival?

Wahl: It happened gradually. I think that we often, as people who live in the city or the region, think that magical things happen elsewhere, like we have traveled somewhere to a beach or to Disney World or to something. I always thought you could transform your own city and ignite the magic potential inside you, if you could get people to experience places they are in every day in a

Wahl: In 2011, when we launched the festival, we did a ďŹ nale on Broad Street and with a company called Transe Express for 200,000 people. It was one of those unbelievable and most memorable experiences of my life. I had planned that a chandelier would lift into the air above the crowd for a long time, a lot of logistics went into that as you can imagine, and to see them ďŹ nally go up in the air and the whole crowd just gasp, it was as special a moment as I could imagine. It felt like the whole city was there. For this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s festival, I wanted to bring them back, and try to do something equally special. So, we created a new show with them called "Cristal Palace,â&#x20AC;? a world premiere on the riverfront, on the Schuylkill River. Instead of doing one performance, we're going to do nine and really hope that everybody in the city gets a chance to see it.

In your eighth year, it seems like PIFA keeps getting bigger and better. How does the festival keep topping itself, and are you nervous about being able to sustain that trajectory for future PIFA events?

Wahl: I don't think about it that way. I think about it as when I meet people when I travel or when people send me ideas â&#x20AC;Ś I just look for stuff that makes me say, "Oh, this speaks to me about where we are right now. This is a new way to tell a story. This is a new way that the public could intersect with art.â&#x20AC;? It's not about topping myself, it's more about how do we surprise people, how do we engage people in new

ways?

To continue on this idea of innovative performances, what do you look for when scouting new events?

Wahl: I really just think about [the festival] as a belief that when you're surprised, you open yourself maybe a little bit to some emotion or to some place in your heart to create a memory. I look for things that give you that experience â&#x20AC;Ś This year we're doing a project with sheep, I've got German dancers going down the street with masking tape to create an unusual experience and we're doing a 24-hour telling of the whole history of the United States in America. These are all about ways that we come together and share space.

Would you say that's how you keep it new and exciting for people who've gone to the festival before?

Wahl: I think it's new and exciting whether you've been before or not â&#x20AC;Ś In many cases you won't have heard of the artists. I always think of PIFA as an opportunity for us to bring or produce art that wouldn't normally happen or that hasn't happened in Philadelphia.

I think of the projects always being difďŹ cult to categorize. They're not easy to talk about, and so they have the opportunity to provide a lot of perspective on a lot of ways to think about what they're about or how they work. Whether you're coming back, and you've seen everything we've done before â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and of course that's amazing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or whether you're just hearing about this for the ďŹ rst time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I still feel that we are relatively young as a festival â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I hope that when projects are crossing your path â&#x20AC;Ś you just say, "all right, well I want to try something.

I want to open myself up to the experience and I'm going to do that with my grandmother or my date or my ďŹ ancĂŠ or my best friend or, or maybe just the neighborhoodâ&#x20AC;? if the work happens to be in your neighborhood. [On a side note], if we just happen to be in your neighborhood, I hope you just come outside and try it.

Your events are priced free-andup and are designed for various age groups. What is your thought process behind increasing the demographics?

Wahl: We really work hard to make sure that there are different

ARTS/CULTURE shows that bring together different groups of people. The whole festival is about how we build community as a city, how we come together and ďŹ nd common ground and recognize each other as our neighbor, as our friends, our fellow citizens that all share Philadelphia. The festival always wants to try to bring people of different ages of different backgrounds to share the space with the artists. With PIFA, there's no fourth wall. There is no distance between the art form and the audience. We're in it together. We're part of telling the story, part of creating the experience, part of creating a memory together.

Wahl: Well, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cristal Palace.â&#x20AC;? I have been planning that since 2012, so that's going to be spectacular. Taylor Mac, the idea that we're going to tell a 24-hour story about the history of our nation in the history of music and our nation, and we're going to do that from point of views of people who haven't always been part of the storytelling theme seems so empowering to me. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Fever,â&#x20AC;? that's a very special show with a small group of people. You sit in a circle and as the story happens, almost the way a story happens around a campďŹ re, someone starts talking to you and all of a sudden you are all wrapped up in it.

PIFA has over 50 events that all are very difLess intimate, one of the larger events is the ferent in nature. What advice would you give to annual street fair. Why was it important to have navigating the festival when it comes to choos- this type of event in the festival?

Wahl: When we started the festival, we ing events?

Wahl: I always say you want to try to see at least three different projects. When you do that, you start to draw connections between them for yourself. You start to say, "Huh, I think these ďŹ t together in this way," "this made me experience these three different emotions" or "these made me spend time with these three different people in my life" or "these made me think about the same person in my life three different ways." You start to draw connecting points. I really see this particular festival as really about what does it mean to build community. What does it mean to be both an individual, who has all sorts of hopes and desires and dreams and fears, trying to trying to ďŹ gure out how to express that and the tension between being that individual and being a member of a society where we are collectively responsible for each other. We all have to vote, we all have to pay taxes, we all have to make the city a thriving thing. So there is a natural dialogue I think between being an individual and being a member of the society. I think that's what the festival really tries to get you to consider differently by opening new doors and drawing back the curtain.

The inevitable follow-up question is whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your three? What are you personally most excited to see this year?

We have had in the past a Ferris wheel right in the middle of the street, we've covered entire blocks in graph, had a dinosaur petting zoo and a 25-foot waterfall. We've brought in performers from around the world to surprise people on the street.

So clearly your typical street fair.

Wahl: Oh yeah, just typical. This year, one of the surprises is a paper boat river where we can encourage kids to make paper boats and put them into the street, which will ďŹ&#x201A;ow down Broad. We'll see how that works. That's going to be magical. I think when you're a 5-yearold and you fold your paper boat and place it into the water in the middle of the street with the whole city, watch it go down and collect it later, that is pure magic. like watersports, and I heard about a guy in a rural area who holds piss parties in his backyard. I found a mailing list for those interested in piss play, and it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t long before he posted about one of these parties. People on the list talk a big game, but no one else has stepped up to host something, including me. (I would, but four neighbors look into my backyard.) The host has very simple rules for who can attend: You have to identify as a guy and wear masculine attire. I get to the party, and there were about four guys and the host. I had a good time.

The host had plenty of drinks out, towels, chairs, canopies, and candles to ward off the mosquitos. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been back a couple times.

Everyone is friendly enough and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the right amount of perversion. So whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the problem? The host. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s loud and annoying.

He insists on putting classical music on (it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t set the mood very well). He tells the same lame jokes every time heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pissing on someone. He will complain that people say theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re coming and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show. If you are having a moment with someone, he will invariably horn in on the action. Without being rude, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve tried to make it clear that we are not looking for company, but he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take the hint. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his party, and props to him for hosting it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but it takes the fun out of it when the host doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know when to back off. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gotten to the point where itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not worth the effort to go. Do I just get over it, or say something privately? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Person Exasperates Enthusiast The advice I gave a different reader about dealing with a guest horning in on the action at an orgy applies in your case: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even kind and decent people can be terrible about taking hints â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially when doing so means getting cut out of a drunken fuckfest. So donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hint, tell. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no rule of etiquette that can paper over the discomfort and awkwardness of that moment, so youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just have to power through it.â&#x20AC;?

Swap out â&#x20AC;&#x153;drunken fuckfestâ&#x20AC;? for â&#x20AC;&#x153;drenchinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; piss scene,â&#x20AC;? and the advice works â&#x20AC;&#x201C; up to a point, PEE, because the person in your case who needs telling, not hinting, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t one of the guests, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the host. (And he sounds like a gracious host. I mean, drinks, towels, and canapĂŠs* at a piss party? Swank.)

But your hostâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behavior sounds genuinely annoying. Hosting a sex party doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give someone the right to insert himself into someone elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scene, and stupid jokes have the power to kill the mood and murder the boners.

So what do you do?

Well, you could send your host an e-mail or give him a call. Thank him for the invite, let him know you appreciate the effort he goes to (such delicious canapĂŠs!), and then tell him why some people say theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re coming and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show: Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re too loud, your music is awful, you have a bad habit of horning in on the action, and you need to learn some new jokes to tell when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re pissing on someone (or, better yet, not tell any jokes at all). But I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think ticking off a list of his shortcomings is going to get you anywhere other than crossed off the invite list to future parties.

So why not make your own piss party?

You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need a big backyard â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I mean, presumably your place has a tub. Supplement your tub with a couple of kiddie pools on top of some plastic tarp laid down on the living room or basement ďŹ&#x201A;oor. Ask your guests to keep it in the tub, pool, or on the tarp.

You get to choose the guys, you get to select the music, and, as host, you can lay down the law about making jokes and horning in on the action: Both are forbidden, and joketelling horner-inners will be asked to pull up their pants and leave.
