I

truly donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe Michael White went looking for trouble the night he encountered Sean Schellenger. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe he meant to take Schellengerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. But the fact remains in this tragedy of epic proportion is that we have a young man who could spend signiďŹ cant years of his young life behind bars and another man in the prime of his life ďŹ nding it come to an end.

But talking to some in the gig industry this week, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surprising that these types of incidents donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen more. I made a point over the past week or so to intentionally take multiple rideshares in an attempt to understand what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like working for yourself with no safety precautions. Additionally, when I sparked the White-Schellenger conversation with a former colleague of mine who has a side hustle as a courier for Uber Eats, he took it all in and with a blank stare simply said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It sucks, but it sounded like the kid [White] was forced to protect himself,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I gotta be honest, I go into some pretty sketchy situations in this job and I carry [mace and a pocket knife] to protect myself.

I hope Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d never have to use it, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m prepared to if need be. If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your life or mine, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to do all I can to make sure itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s yours.â&#x20AC;?

Of the ďŹ ve Uber rides I took, two drivers admitted they had a ďŹ rearm in the car. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I drive at night so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty much a given,â&#x20AC;? said NaďŹ se, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last name was omitted for safety. People get in your car and ask you to take them back to some pretty scary parts of town. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know you, I only know the face thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on the screen. You have to protect yourself out here, man. These people are crazy.â&#x20AC;?

NaďŹ se said he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t up to speed on the White case, but said that if his life was in danger he wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve considered the same. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It sounds like this boy didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a choice,â&#x20AC;? he continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the heat of an argument youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not backing down and if someone puts their hands on you, what are you supposed to do? People always say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;oh, just walk away,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never that easy. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

sad to hear of a manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, but it sounds like this couldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been avoided on both sides.â&#x20AC;?

At ďŹ rst the knowledge that there was a gun in NaďŹ seâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s car while we spoke was a bit disconcerting. But after realizing what these drivers encounter on a daily and how open and accepting they were of explaining why (but not without questioning why Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d want to know) I quickly realized that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s less of a issue of needing to fear for my life, but of my driver fearing for theirs on a nightly basis â&#x20AC;&#x201C; simply for trying to make a few extra bucks.

When it comes to rideshare deaths in particular, the cases are few but the stories are harrowing. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the Uber driver in Illinois who picked up a 16-year-old passenger, who pulled out a machete and starting hacking away at her driver from the back seat, killing him. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also the Uber driver in Denver in June, who shot a passenger 10 times after he alleged the man started attacking him from the back seat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s getting in my car,â&#x20AC;? said Angela Harriman, 31, a West Philly native who now resides in West Oak Lane and drives for both Uber and Lyft roughly ďŹ ve days a week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had people curse me out, one guy kick my car when he got out because he was in a hurry and said I was driving to slow. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scary on the weekends too because youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re picking up a lot of drunk people and you just never know what their mood is like.â&#x20AC;?

Harriman claims that while driving for rideshares can be lucrative, the fear is always there. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m [5-feet, 4-inches tall and] 130 pounds,â&#x20AC;? Harriman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If shit really goes down and someone wants to try me, I can only do so much. Plus, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re sitting behind me so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m already at a disadvantage. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ever have to think about that stuff because for the majority of the time, you have intelligent people getting in your car, but you just never know the one time the wrong person comes in and that could be the end.â&#x20AC;?

The fact that White is in prison and Schellengerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family has to mourn his loss is unfortunate, but not as unfortunate as having to defend yourself for simply trying to make a few extra bucks. I think about these stories while I keep a close eye on what will ultimately happen to Michael White, now the posterboy for what doing many in the gig economy claim at the end of the day was his only option. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been an interesting week in the ďŹ ght for immigration reform.

A decision from Mayor Jim Kenney electing to not renew an agreement for U.S. Immigration and Customs ofďŹ cials to use the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s PARS database in an effort to seek out illegal immigrants seemed a short-lived victory in a ďŹ ght that has lasted close to 30 days since protesters set up shop outside ICEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Philadelphia ofďŹ ces last month. Kenney ďŹ nally had enough of the move to an occupation turned encampment outside City Hall and forced everyone out last week.

However, that hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stopped protesters, many of whom are comprised less of true activists and more of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeless population to set up shop in an attempt for a third encampment on Arch Street. Our writer, Andrea Cantor, spent several days over the course of three week at the encampment and has a good breakdown of the protest to date on page 6. For now, here are a few snapshots of a protest built to last in Philadelphia and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t appear to be letting up anytime soon. Q

NEWS quickly formed outside City Hall. The subsequent protest, aptly named Occupy City Hall, captured some initial attention, but soon many of the protest-regulars dispersed. What remained consisted mainly of those without a home to return to.

In â&#x20AC;&#x153;This Movement is Not Ours, Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Everybodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s,â&#x20AC;? published on the anarchist website Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Going Down, an anonymous writer and social justice organizer admitted: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Luckily for all of us, the unhoused community has held it down and kept this movement alive.â&#x20AC;?

ith a decided victory in the battle for immigration reform, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to give credit where credit is due. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not activists one can entirely tout as the usual suspects in this ďŹ ght, but instead itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s many within the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expansive homeless population. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There's more homeless here than there are activists,â&#x20AC;? self-called â&#x20AC;&#x153;nomadâ&#x20AC;? Richie Scheerer said during a conversation with Philly Weekly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are standing up, like renegade style.â&#x20AC;?

Scheerer, 31, and his girlfriend joined the protest at City Hall just two days in, leaving the streets for the outdoor shelter of activism. The

camp has since been removed after Mayor Kenney ordered the protesters to leave by 2 p.m. on July 28 after subsequently electing to not renew an agreement for U.S. Immigration ofďŹ cers to utilize the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Preliminary Arrangement Reporting System (PARS).

The protesters brieďŹ&#x201A;y reassembled across from Arch Street Methodist Church on July 31 with a third camp, but it was shut down by 50 police ofďŹ cers. One protester was arrested for failing to disperse.

HOW IT STARTED

It was after the mayor ordered the shutdown of the ďŹ rst encampment Occupy ICE on 8th and Cherry streets that the second camp

Despite the lack of organized support, the transient activists kept up the vocal and visible pressures on Kenney. But the unsheltered protesters didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just help the immigration movement â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the movement helped them too.

According to the anonymous source in the Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Going Down piece, one â&#x20AC;&#x153;unhoused manâ&#x20AC;? was extremely violent at the beginning of the protest. After several physical and verbal confrontations, the protest was going to sanction him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m so glad they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, because now he holds down the kitchen and is one of the people most concerned with keeping the camp tidy,â&#x20AC;? wrote the author.

The camp included many essential services and resources the homeless protesters and passersby would normally be without, such as plenty of donated food and clean water, a form of shelter, a medical tent, and child care â&#x20AC;&#x201C; although children were reportedly not allowed to stay overnight. Participants used yoga mats, pillows and other makeshift items to sleep on in the camp.

Braving all the weather elements, the volunteers put up tarps to combat last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s constant downpour and kept hydrated during the high temps. Over the course of the campâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three weeks, an ambulance had to be called a few times for health concerns, such as respiratory issues and diabetic shocks, according to Scheerer.

When asked how it feels to be providing the services that should be handled on the city and state level, Scheerer said he felt empowered. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It feels even better because we can do it ourselves and create structure with so many diverse people with so many different paths and lifestyles. We can come together and create a foundation where we can treat each other better than the city treats us,â&#x20AC;? said Scheerer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That's so much more powerful, because we're not sitting around, waiting for the city to give their handouts, because their handouts are slim to none.â&#x20AC;?

For Brian, last name omitted for privacy, the greatest resource he has received from the protest is friends. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a getaway spot. Where I was at wasn't really a good spot, but I came out here and made friends and everything,â&#x20AC;? said Brian, who recently lost his job as a landscaper and

NEWS has been unable to afford housing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of my spare time has been here, just volunteering, just so I can stay busy.â&#x20AC;?

DRUGS, FIGHTS AND THEFT

The homeless activists stepped up to plate in the ďŹ ght for immigration reform, but many issues that plague the demographic were also brought into the conďŹ ned space. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some people smoke weed, at worse K2,â&#x20AC;?

K2 or Spice is making headlines for the rising death toll among users. In Washington, D.C., it is reported that more than 300 people have died in a two-week span from K2. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a statement on July 19, stating that it has â&#x20AC;&#x153;become aware of reports of severe illnesses and deaths resulting from the use of synthetic cannabinoid (marijuana) products that have been contaminated with brodifacoum, a very long-acting anticoagulant commonly used in rat poison.â&#x20AC;?

When these problems came about, as well as other incidences of drug use, there was a spoken agreement to keep the police out of it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We ask people politely to take it somewhere else, because anything like that invites police presence here and threatens the occupation,â&#x20AC;? said Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member Jameson Rush on his ďŹ rst day at the site on July 9, three days after it formed. Rush had been heavily involved in the ICE Occupation.

The camp showcased a number of rules on a lilac poster board the participants devised on the ďŹ rst night to help mitigate issues and protect the campâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longevity, including â&#x20AC;&#x153;no drugs and no booze,â&#x20AC;? said Rush. But as the camp tried to handle situations internally, Scheerer said tensions reached highs that caused many organizers to leave. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There's been a ton of ďŹ ghts here. We had to sanction it and get rid of a lot of people.

There's a lot of original activists who aren't here anymore, who were here the ďŹ rst week or two but left [because of] the mayhem that was erupting over time. They got fed with what was going on, because [the camp] had a lot more structure at the start.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true. A lot of us occupiers have serious addictions, as well as physical and mental health problems,â&#x20AC;? wrote the anonymous writer in the Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Going Down piece. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Often times there are moments of anger and conďŹ&#x201A;ict that can erupt in camp, which can feel scary to people, especially those of us who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come from working class/street/hood backgrounds, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to understand and know that these moments of conďŹ&#x201A;ict often lead to resolution, even if it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look the same as it would in a more middle class or activist space.â&#x20AC;?

When the male went off to search other parts of the camp, Scheerer explained that theft was rampant within the encampment.

He mainly attributed the theft to the home-

less, many with mental illnesses, who passed through for a meal.

Even with all of contentions, Scheerer said he still felt a rare sense of safety and camaraderie at the camp. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The shelters are a joke,â&#x20AC;? said Scheerer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are getting into ďŹ ghts, people are catching bed bugs, people are getting stabbed in shelters, people are getting their things stolen from them.â&#x20AC;?

Protesters from Occupy ICE, which had more established organizations at the fourday camp, posted a photo of a release from the City of Philadelphia. The statement called for cleanup and homeless assistance services at the location of the third camp. While the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Service Dayâ&#x20AC;? announcement was dated from March 20, the protesters believe that this was a target for their camp.

Occupy Ice wrote: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hey the city of philadelphia is targeting camp as a homeless encampment instead of what it actually is: a political movement and gathering space! Come help support us tonight and tomorrow morning against this infringement on our constitutional rights to

It became clear over the span of the camp, which lasted three full weeks, that the established group members came on rotation, stayed a couple hours or spent a night or two, or even in some cases were altogether absent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over the last two weeks activists of all ideological stripes â&#x20AC;Ś have almost entirely stepped back from living at the camp, and those that do come down rotate in and out for brief periods while the unhoused people keep it going,â&#x20AC;? the unidentiďŹ ed author wrote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;Ś many in the Philly activist networks, tired from weeks of hard work, inďŹ ghting, and social agitation, and having heard the news that Kenney is likely to give in, have stepped back and become demobilized (ourselves included).â&#x20AC;?

Organizations also held separate demonstrations, such as leftist network Refuse Fascism, which recently held its second of two â&#x20AC;&#x153;Protest Pence in PHLâ&#x20AC;? events, the latest on July 23. The demonstration gained a lot of media attention, most notably for the 100 women who dressed in red cloaks in homage of Margaret Atwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s classic â&#x20AC;&#x153;Handmaidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tale.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can speak to what we are doing. I won't speak to what we're not doing, and that would be how I can answer,â&#x20AC;? said Refuse Fascism organizer Samantha Goldman when asked by PW why the organization did not remain on site at the camp.

Occupy City Hall has had three demands, including ending the PARS agreement in the city, shutting down Berks Family Detention Center in Leesport, Pa., and abolishing ICE on the federal level. Recently, the group announced it is also ďŹ ghting against stop-andfrisk. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Occupy City Hall is] organizing, because they want ICE to stop tearing families apart.

PARS is one of many demands,â&#x20AC;? Goldman later said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wouldn't reduce it all to PARS, and I think that's a lot of what has happened.â&#x20AC;?

Refuse Fascism was in the crowd at the â&#x20AC;&#x153;End Family Detentionâ&#x20AC;? rally, part of the nationwide â&#x20AC;&#x153;Keep Families Togetherâ&#x20AC;? demonstrations, on June 30. After the speeches made by various organizations and community members, Refuse Fascism led a subsequent march to the ICE building. Some participants were unaware the march was unplanned and unafďŹ liated with the main rally.

The group remains ďŹ rm that ICE will not be abolished and reform will not be upheld until the Trump-Pence regime is driven out.

But before jumping to conclusions, the group is not a fan of the Democratic Party either.

The group provided a written statement following the interview, which read in part:

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe the Democratic Party leadership will NOT lead us out of this. They are about maintaining order for their whole set up. For them, order is more important than justice, even if that means the order of fascism. After Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s election, President Obama said of Trump, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;We are all on the same team â&#x20AC;ŚWe are now all rooting for his success.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; NO! If Trump succeeds, it will be catastrophic!â&#x20AC;?

One of the organizers of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;End Family Detentionâ&#x20AC;? rally at Logan Circle, Juntos was also not in attendance at the Occupy City Hall camp. But the the Latinx immigrant organization in South Philly had a clear reason for the absence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We would never want to expose any of our [undocumented immigrant] members to any potential dangers,â&#x20AC;? explained Miguel Andrade, communications manager of Juntos. Andrade explained the high visibility of the camp would have left immigrants susceptible to ICE interaction, arrest and deportation. Unable to protest on the streets, however, Juntos went to work behind the scenes. The group held a number of meetings with Mayor Kenney and his administration, where they used their most effective tool â&#x20AC;&#x201C; personal accounts and stories. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mayor Kenney has come to our ofďŹ ce and directly heard from community members,â&#x20AC;? said Andrade. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was physically moved to tears a couple of time, not from only hearing the stories of people in Philly, but also the fear of ICE ... this rogue agency that has been going essentially wild in our city.â&#x20AC;?

As for the homeless protesters, Andrade has nothing but respect for the people who put themselves on the front lines for Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immigrant community. Both the immigrant community and the unsheltered homeless population, not to be confused with homeless overall, are growing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is something really beautiful around one marginalized group ďŹ ghting for and supporting another,â&#x20AC;? Andrade said.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

It is up in the air on how people like Brian will stay â&#x20AC;&#x153;busyâ&#x20AC;? and those like Scheerer will ďŹ nd a relatively â&#x20AC;&#x153;safeâ&#x20AC;? place to sleep, since the homeless protesters have decamped for the third time as per Mayor Kenneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s orders.

The protest released a statement on their Facebook page after leaving the second, saying they are â&#x20AC;&#x153;not going home.â&#x20AC;? Instead, they will reorganize to continue the ďŹ ght for immigration reform. That ďŹ ghting mentality doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to be changing anytime soon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This protest brought together a lot of beautiful people from so many different walks of life,â&#x20AC;? said Scheerer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There's so much to that, and it's so serene that something like this would bring together people who would never get along in any other circumstance. â&#x20AC;Ś This is a family here.â&#x20AC;? One would have to go back to the 19th Century to debate the origins of how, when and where the term â&#x20AC;&#x153;Phillyâ&#x20AC;? derived as a nickname for our fair city.

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Philly:â&#x20AC;&#x2122; An etymology When it comes to the City of Brotherly Love, whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in a nickname?

How about a theater troupe, sports teams and even some blackface

hen a stage play called â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Fall of Philly Babylonâ&#x20AC;? ďŹ rst premiered in the City of Brotherly Love, Grover Cleveland was the American President and Pemberton Medicine â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which would later become The Coca-Cola Company â&#x20AC;&#x201C; had just incorporated in Atlanta.

The year was 1889 and the city was a very different place, evidenced in part by the fact that this particular farce was staged by the Carncross Minstrels, a theater troupe that often performed in blackface.

There are few records of the play today, but the gist was that actors dressed in 1880s renditions of Babylonian fash-

ion to lampoon local society. An unassuming capsule description of the show is tucked into the theater section of the Philadelphia Inquirer, claiming the â&#x20AC;&#x153;pertinence of the fun in the local hits of this satire delights the minstrel audience.â&#x20AC;?

Delightful.

Clunky praise aside, whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interesting about this theater notice is that it is possibly the ďŹ rst time the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;Phillyâ&#x20AC;? had appeared in the Inquirer. In fact, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably one of the few times the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diminutive nickname appeared in print anywhere before 1900. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because, contrary to common belief, use of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seemingly immortal shorthand has ďŹ&#x201A;uctuated over time. In fact, news archives show the moniker didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really

catch on until nearly a century after the curtains closed on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Babylon.â&#x20AC;?

We do know the term was commonly used in spoken language well before the 1890s. There are a handful of news articles that include passing mentions prior to 1889, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nearly in quoted speech or, like an 1859 reference in the Philadelphia Daily News editorial spotted by reader John Titzel, jokingly used in quotations to underscore the origins of the term as spoken slang. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The West â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; boys are ďŹ rst class goodfellows,â&#x20AC;? exclaimed the ed board, referring to local ďŹ reďŹ ghters taking a gleaming new steam-powered ďŹ re engine out on a tour of other Pennsylvania cities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have no doubt their brother ďŹ reman in Reading will â&#x20AC;Ś give them

such a reception as they so justly deserve.â&#x20AC;?

But just a few sentences later, the same long-deceased editor switched back to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philadelphia.â&#x20AC;? So why did space-conscious newspapers go out of their way to avoid a publicly popular and spacesaving shorthand?

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no one deďŹ nitive answer, but David Sullivan, the Inquirerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current assistant managing editor for editing and standards, has a few theories. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty sure that it came from sports and leached its way into the general language,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I come from probably the only city that has more syllables in its name â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Indianapolis â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the same thing happened there. My mother never would have just called it â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Indy.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; But then the race started being called the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Indy 500.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; It caught on.â&#x20AC;?

Indeed, the ďŹ rst time the Inquirer appears to have used the term in a headline was in 1896. For decades after that, its use was relegated to the sports page. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Splendid Day for Philly Cricket,â&#x20AC;? one headline reads, from a lost era in which cricket matches got as much ink as baseball games.

The pull of informality for cities with tongue-twisting names is strong. In 1884, the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s baseball franchise changed its name from the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Quakersâ&#x20AC;? to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.â&#x20AC;? But some fans and, ironically, sports section editors hated it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; several just continued calling the team the Quakers to save ink and space for headlines.

But others just logically shortened the name to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philliesâ&#x20AC;? we know today.

In 1890, the team ofďŹ cially adopted the moniker â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not so long before the citywide nickname started to see an uptick in common usage.

Hard news editors still kept a ban on using â&#x20AC;&#x153;Phillyâ&#x20AC;? and, remarkably, Sullivan says the paperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ cial style policy is little changed today â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at least in print. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve pretty much held to that in the print editions,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You see â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in editorials, or sports. You

could say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;North Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;South Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; but not just â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Philly.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

For some reason, the term really exploded in the 1970s and has stayed popular since. Sullivan thinks that had something to do with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rockyâ&#x20AC;? becoming a hit movie and he could be on to something.

Throughout the 1960s, the shorthand appeared 2,000 times in print, in the Inquirer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s counting ads, letters to the editor, anything. In the 1970s, it appeared 5,000 times. In the 1980s, 11,000 times. By the 1990s, 28,000 times. The term â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;? also increased in frequency over the same period of time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; perhaps merely owing to the growing size of the newspaper during its heyday â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but not exponentially.

The trend is more noticable for its neighborhood renderings, like â&#x20AC;&#x153;South Philly,â&#x20AC;? most of which seem to have come into fashion around the 1840s as the city began to grow far beyond the downtown. But â&#x20AC;&#x153;South Philly,â&#x20AC;? for example, appeared in the Inquirer just 53 times in the 1960s, before Rocky took his famous run through the 9th Street Market. In the 1980s, it appeared more than 1,300 times.

Decades ago, the paper actually surveyed its readers on the term. The Inquirerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s audience expressed a clear preference for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Phila.â&#x20AC;? over â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philly,â&#x20AC;? Sullivan recalls. But despite the standing editorial ban on using the word in print editions, throughout the 20th century up to now, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Phillyâ&#x20AC;? has only become more common, according to usage totals in the Inquirer archives and Google Books.

Yet the realities of the internet age truly cemented the termâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s staying power. As local newspapers have digitized their operations, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also adapted to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s widely used hypocorism. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In web analytics, people almost always search for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Philly,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? artin Speithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother is always saying her son was born on the wrong continent.

The 28-year-old butcher lives and works in a small town in western Germany. But since the age of 6, his heart has been somewhere else.

It was at that age, in 1996, when Speith stumbled upon his ďŹ rst Philadelphia Eagles game, broadcast on a cable news channel one evening in his family home. Things havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been the same since.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was Eagles-Cowboys,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How could I forget?â&#x20AC;?

Leaned over the barstool in Paddyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pub in Old City on a Saturday afternoon in June, Speith crushes a few citywide specials, sparking up a Marlboro Red with a cheap 7-11 lighter in between rounds. His right hand is heavily bandaged â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an accident at the butcher shop just hours before his most recent ďŹ&#x201A;ight to Philly. He wears a Flyers T-shirt.

Tattoos snake down both of his arms, showcasing two generations of Birds logos: the descending Eagle clutching a football in its talons (the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primary logo from 1987

ryn Santamoor has a simple explanation for why she declared for one of Philadelphia City Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seven at-large seats, which are elected by voters citywide, in October of last year: to get a jump on fundraising, an area where incumbents historically trounce their less-connected challengers.

Today, after eight months of campaigning, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already raised close to $50,000 in support of her bid, still 10 months out from the May 2019 Democratic Primary. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started raising money after Thanksgiving of last year.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked really hard to raise money and awareness before the end of that year, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve already raised more money than some of the incumbents,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Of course, any of them could have a fundraiser tomorrow and double that.â&#x20AC;?

A former deputy managing director under Michael Nutter, Santamoor left late in that administration to work at Public Financial Management, a government consultancy that counsels ďŹ scally distressed cities, like Reading. She quit that job last year to run for ofďŹ ce full-time.

She says she hopes that if elected, her experience in the executive branch would make her a unique commodity in the chamber, which is dominated by lawyers and former political staffers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think we need folks with a different skill set on council,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one in council has worked as a city manager â&#x20AC;Ś if the city was a bank and no one on the board of supervisors had worked in a bank, that would be a problem.â&#x20AC;?

She said her top priority is increasing â&#x20AC;&#x153;resourcesâ&#x20AC;? for schools. But much of her pitch for elected ofďŹ ce centers on disrupting the sometimes-dysfunctional work culture of City Hall, where simple permits and licensing applications must still be submitted in person. Basic services in comparable cit-

ies, like regular street sweeping, count as pie-in-the-sky aspirations.

Santamoor said nuts-and-bolts issues can get written off as too wonkish to campaign on, but that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a winning formula in speaking to the issues that affect people every day.

There are so many things to ďŹ x in City Hall,â&#x20AC;? Santamoor said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know a lot about trash collection. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not sexy, but trash talks. People are sick and tired of dirty streets.â&#x20AC;?

Notably, Santamoor elided speciďŹ c questions about her political alignment, even as centrist and progressive Democrats battle over what, exactly, the local party stands for. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a Democrat,â&#x20AC;? she said, after a pause. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Given the political climate right now, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very easy for us to divide up what a Democrat is and does. I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dangerous. The only folks interested in Democrats dividing each other up are Republicans.â&#x20AC;?

To her progressive credentials, she notes that she is the daughter of a school teacher and a labor leader for a New York state manufacturing union. She also underscored her support for at least one initiative that many on council wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t touch: immediately opening safe injection sites to stanch the opioid overdose crisis.

Even self-described progressives like Mayor Jim Kenney only support the idea in theory. Santamoor wants to take the idea a step further and have treatment be a broader doorway to anti-poverty efforts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been through recovery with several loved ones and I know what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing now isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t working,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an opioid crisis that is killing people every day. We need a safe place for them to go. But we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just stop there. â&#x20AC;Ś People who are dealing with substance abuse disorder, people that are in poverty, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just have one problem. We need to be dealing with this issue holistically.â&#x20AC;?

But in broad ways, the former Hillary Clinton campaigner

tacks more toward a businessfriendly version of progressivism that echoes her former bossâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tenure in City Hall. Santamoor added she had sometimes clashed with her father over the future of labor unions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the end of the day, all unions need to transition to 21st-century models that keep themselves sustained,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you look at the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resources, for example, we need to be talking about pension reform. The union workers that earned their pensions should not lose out â&#x20AC;Ś but we need to be looking at getting out of deďŹ ned beneďŹ t plans.â&#x20AC;?

She added that Nutter was â&#x20AC;&#x153;involvedâ&#x20AC;? in her campaign and â&#x20AC;&#x153;was always there for me to call.â&#x20AC;? It could be a mixed blessing: While some hailed Nutterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts to clean up the City Hall bureaucracy, he also frequently clashed with council and was known for pitching sometimes unpopular budget cuts.

Santamoor acknowledged that many of her proposals fall more under the purview of the mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce. Despite her background, she said she was keenly aware that she isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t running to take over City Hall, but to serve as a colleague to the same people who once declared war on her former boss.

To her, those experiences are one of her biggest selling points. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think he governed during a really tough time,â&#x20AC;? she said, of Nutter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I learned a lot from him about how, sometimes, we have to make tough decisions during tough times.â&#x20AC;?

And then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Democrat Beth Finn, instrumental in organizing the Philadelphia Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s March, Finn has announced that she will run for one of the seven at-large seats on Philadelphia City Council in 2019.

Finn works as a senior project manager at an information technology analytics ďŹ rm that specializes in the health and science sectors. But she is perhaps better known as the colead organizer of Philly Women Rally, a local group that helped coordinate downtown street marches in protest of President

Donald Trump as part of a national day of activism in 2017.

Finn said she got involved in politics in the lead-up to the 2016 Presidential election. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m Jewish and when thencandidate Trump started talking about registering Muslims, that was a big warning sign for me. So, I started volunteering for the Hillary campaign,â&#x20AC;? she recalled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After the election, I knew our work wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t done, so I became one of the organizers for the Women's March.â&#x20AC;?

She announced her candidacy online in mid-June, launching a podcast to chronicle her run for ofďŹ ce. Finnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaign website says sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s running to â&#x20AC;&#x153;bring equality to (Philadelphia) through social and economic justice.â&#x20AC;?

The resident of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Washington Square neighborhood said she was compelled to run for ofďŹ ce because of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extreme economic inequality. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is so much disparity in the city of Philadelphia between the rich and poor,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe everyone should have access to basic dignities like clean air, water, safe public schools or public transit that runs on time and gets you to good jobs.â&#x20AC;?

She said that if elected, she would particularly focus on resolving the issue of deferred maintenance in public schools and other crumbling city infrastructure. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gov. Wolf recently sent us millions of dollars for school repairs, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still just a drop in the bucket. There are schools with ceilings falling off,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And we have just as much lead in our schoolchildren's blood as Flint, but it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the same attention because our water doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look funny. But these are serious problems. â&#x20AC;Ś We need to start setting aside more money for this now.â&#x20AC;?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m gay and have been dating a guy for 10 months. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great overall, and I would say for the most part we both want it to work out.

But I am having a problem with his friends and other lifestyle choices. All of his friends are straight, and almost all of them are women.

All of my friends have always been gay men, like me, so I ďŹ nd this strange. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any problem with women, but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hang out with any women, and neither do most of my friends.

He makes dinner plans for us with his straight friends almost every week, and I grin and bear it. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always old coworkers, so the whole conversation is them talking about old times or straight talk about their children. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredibly boring. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s met my friends, and he likes some of them but dislikes others. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s obvious that he is not comfortable relating to gay men, generally speaking. He does not seem knowledgeable about gay history or culture. For example, he strongly dislikes drag queens and never goes to gay bars. There is one woman in particular he makes dinner for every Friday night.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a standing date that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only occasionally been ďŹ&#x201A;exible about changing to accommodate plans for the two of us. Now heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s planning a weeklong vacation with her. When he ďŹ rst mentioned this trip, he asked if I would want to spend a week camping. I said no, because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like camping. He immediately went forward with planning it with her. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty sure the two of them had already hatched this plan, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think he ever really wanted me to go. I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s WEIRD to want to go camping for an entire week with some old lady. He does other weird things, too, like belonging to a strange new-age church, which is deďŹ nitely at odds with my strongly held anti-religious views.

He has asked me to attend; I went once, and it made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable. The fact that I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like it just turned into a seemingly unsolvable problem between us. He says Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not being â&#x20AC;&#x153;supportive.â&#x20AC;? I need some advice on how to get past my intense feelings of aversion to the weirdness. How can I not let our differences completely destroy the relationship? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Hopelessly Odd Man Out

Differences donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to destroy a relationship. Differences can actually enhance and help sustain a relationship. But for differences to have that effect, HOMO, both partners have to appreciate each other for their differences. You

donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sound appreciative â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you sound contemptuous. And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a problem.

According to Dr. John Gottman of the Gottman Institute (a research institution dedicated to studying and strengthening marriages and other interpersonal relationships) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who says he can accurately predict divorce in 90 percent of cases â&#x20AC;&#x201C; contempt is the leading predictor of divorce. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When contempt begins to overwhelm your relationship, you tend to forget entirely your partnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s positive qualities,â&#x20AC;? he writes in Why Marriages Succeed or Fail. Contempt, Gottman argues, destroys whatever bonds hold a couple together.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been together only 10 months, HOMO, and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not married, but it sounds like contempt has already overwhelmed your relationship. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just that you dislike his friends, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re contemptuous of them; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t share his spiritual beliefs, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re contemptuous of them; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just that his gayness is expressed in a different-thanyours-but-still-perfectly-valid way, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re contemptuous of him as a gay man. Because he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t watch Drag Race or hang out in gay bars. Because heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got a lot of female friends. Because heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happy to sit and talk with his friends about their kids.

This relationship might work if you were capable of appreciating the areas where you two overlap â&#x20AC;&#x201C; your shared interests (including your shared interest in each other) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and content to let him go off and enjoy his friends, his new-age church, and his standing Friday-night dinner date. A growing body of research shows that divergent interests + some time away from each other + mutual respect = long-term relationship success. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re missing the â&#x20AC;&#x153;mutual respectâ&#x20AC;? part â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and where this formula is concerned, HOMO, two out of three ainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how it might look if you could appreciate your differences: Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d do the things you enjoy doing together â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like, say, each other â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but on Friday nights, he makes dinner for his bestie and you hit the gay bars with your gay friends and catch a drag show. You would go on vacations together, but once in a while heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go on vacation with one of his â&#x20AC;&#x153;straightyâ&#x20AC;? friends, and once in a while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go on vacation with your gay friends. On Sundays, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go to woowoo church and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d sleep in or binge-watch Pose. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be happy to let him be him, and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be happy to let you be you â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and together the two of you would add up to an interesting, harmonious, compelling â&#x20AC;&#x153;we.â&#x20AC;?

But I honestly donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think you have it in you.
