p until the blockbuster report of 301 priests linked to a child abuse scandal of statewide proportion right here in Pennsylvania, the news of the moment for me was watching former reality TV star, turned White House aide, turned Trump detractor and now author Omarosa Manigault-Newman make a complete mockery of the Trump Administration.

Once a esteemed conďŹ dant to Donald Trump, the man who made her a name during the bizarre reign NBCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reality series The Apprentice had on the American psyche, Manigault Newman has now joined the list who claim the President is nothing more than a racist liar with virtually no compassion or loyalty to the people heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s supposed to serve.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bizarre twist for a woman who during the election would have climbed a mountain for Trump, once lauding his ability to lead and conquer in all facets of business. Today, her claims have Trump lashing out against his former pal, the latest a tweet that has caused a ďŹ restorm not just in the media, but within the walls of our national government referring to Manigault Newman as â&#x20AC;&#x153;that dog.â&#x20AC;?

What has Trump scathing is Manigault Newmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shocking recordings and accusations she has both on the President and other members of his cabinet, taken from inside the White House. The most popular recording, one that been heard countless times is actually the one of White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly, ďŹ ring Manigault Newman from inside whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s supposed to be a secure room of the White House, putting into question the safety of our national security if a former reality television star can sell copies

of a recording from inside that room to any member of the media willing to purchase it.

If you think about it, this is pretty terrifying shit.

Whether or not Trump cares is deďŹ nitely up for debate, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been said that this recent turn of soap opera drama has actually weakened his popularity among female African-American voters. Mind you all of this is on the heels of Trump going after NBA star LeBron James just two weeks earlier. This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t to suggest Trump only goes after black people, just follow is pervasive Twitter account for proof of that, but Manigault Newmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also claims that sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heard Trump use the N-word on numerous occasions and knows of a recording of him saying the word isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t helping matters much.

Makes me feel especially sorry for the cowboy hat wearing African-Americans conveniently placed in the front row of his rallies in middle America.

But this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t about Trump â&#x20AC;&#x201C; OK, well it is â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but looking at him and what heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been tasked to do through the lens of what Manigault Newman is doing to him. All of these recordings and secret phone conversations is in part to protect herself, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also perfect timing when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to sell a blockbuster tell-all novel, detailing your time in the looney bin, er, White House.

Call this drama essentially a marketing tour for said book, getting paid to tell her story over and over and over again on top of drumming up excitement for said book. In addition to being â&#x20AC;&#x153;that dog,â&#x20AC;? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard her referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;stupid,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;an idiot,â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;chasing her 15 minutes of fame.â&#x20AC;?

But I actually think Manigault Newman is pretty smart.

She played the entire Trump Administration for chumps, exposed leaks in White House security, made herself the topic of multiple conversations, all leading to sales of a book that will probably make her a millionaire â&#x20AC;&#x201C; assuming she isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t one already.

In Philly terms, I wonder if that qualiďŹ es her as the winner â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or weasel of the week.

On Tuesday, Aug. 14, a bombshell report from the OfďŹ ce of Attorney General Josh Shapiro revealed ďŹ ndings of rampant statewide sexual abuse at the hands of many within the Catholic Church and a disgusting attempt at a cover-up that spanned decades across various Dioceses and to the Vatican.

According to the report, no one across levels of the Catholic Church were innocent as priests, monsignors, bishops and more knew but chose not to become the whistleblower on heinous acts of sexual abuse against children.

NEWS The Hub of Hope has been a temporary service station during the winter months since 2012, but the plan to create it as a permanent feature of Suburban Station is fairly recent, a project that had a â&#x20AC;&#x153;quick turnaround,â&#x20AC;? as Andrew Busch, SEPTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chief press ofďŹ cer, described.The SEPTA Key Card has been in the works for ďŹ ve or so years, according to Busch. But this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turnstiles are one of the most visible headways in the project.Given the short timeline between the construction of the Hub of Hope and then the turnstiles, it puts into question if SEPTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s investment in the service station was in an effort to save face for the negative ramiďŹ cations the turnstiles may have on the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeless community.

Many of the benches have also been removed from the unpaid areas, including the bench that Dixon sat on when talking to PW. Now, it is just an empty space with a SEPTA Key advertisement in the background.

n October, Philadelphia Weekly reported the lead up to the grand opening of Suburban Stationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest underground daytime service station for the homeless, the Hub of Hope.

With reports clouded by excitement for the ďŹ rst-ever project of its kind, at the time of that report, PW spoke with a transient named

Glen Dixon, who delivered eerie intuition: â&#x20AC;&#x153;[The Hub of Hope is] all well and good.

But are they doing it to help people, or just to keep [homeless] people from being seen in the public eye?â&#x20AC;?

Now it appears there could be some truth to Dixonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premonition.

Soon after the Hub of Hope opened on Jan. 30, turnstiles started popping up at Suburban Station as well as at other regional rail

The Hub of Hope is a partnership between SEPTA, the City of Philadelphia and homeless activist organization Project HOME. Spokespeople from both SEPTA and the City of Philadelphia cited the good works of the Hub of Hope when asked only about the turnstilesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; impact on the homeless populations.

In email correspondence, PW posed the following question to Communications Director of the City of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Health and Human Services Alicia Taylor: â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the turnstiles now being enforced at the train stations, does this hurt homeless access to shared space? One homeless man also said some of the bathrooms are cut off from the turnstiles, do you know if this is true?â&#x20AC;?

On behalf of the City, Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response read: â&#x20AC;&#x153;In 2017, in anticipation of the installation of the new Key system, SEPTA invested nearly $1M in the Hub of Hope, a new daytime engagement center for people experiencing homelessness, who would otherwise likely have been in the Concourse. In our view, this was both pragmatic and compassionate â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not to mention forward thinking â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on the part of SEPTA. They are the ďŹ rst transit authority in the country to try to address homelessness by providing a place for people to go to get food, services and medical care.â&#x20AC;?

On behalf of SEPTA, Busch did not directly conďŹ rm or deny the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response of SEPTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s investment in the Hub of Hope being â&#x20AC;&#x153;in anticipationâ&#x20AC;? of the SEPTA Key. He did later say, however, the two projects were not in direct connection. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was mainly driven by the inďŹ&#x201A;ux, [and] the additional numbers of homeless individuals we had been seeing,â&#x20AC;? said Busch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We're seeing more numbers in Suburban, through the concourse, and in Jefferson Station, so the Hub of Hope was done to address that.â&#x20AC;?

Busch went onto to clarify, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It really was independent of the Key, it was an issue that had to be addressed, regardless of where we were with the Key â&#x20AC;Ś so it wasn't an effort to link it speciďŹ cally with the Key, it was more to deal with the issue of providing a resource [for the homeless].â&#x20AC;?

Jeffrey admitted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The city has been so supportive of the Hub â&#x20AC;Ś if it wasn't for the City and SEPTA, [the Hub] wouldn't exist, so I'll certainly stand by whatever they say.â&#x20AC;?

As for the possible ramiďŹ cations of the turnstiles on the homeless, Jeffrey said Project HOMEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission is â&#x20AC;&#x153;to meet them wherever they are.â&#x20AC;? Jeffrey noted the homeless also had to move around after the construction of Love Park and Parkway 100.

WHAT IS THE HOMELESS REACTION? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It feels like we got smacked in the face,â&#x20AC;? said Adam, a homeless man whose last name was omitted for privacy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel like I got smacked in the face, like pow!â&#x20AC;?

Homeless visibility has increased in the City, largely attributed to the opioid epidemic, according to the OfďŹ ce of Homeless Services. The annual Point In Time count reported a 10 percent increase from 2017 (956 unsheltered people) to 2018 (1,020 unsheltered people). In a positive light, the growth has slowed down from 2016 to 2017, which was at 32 percent.

Barred from the paid areas, Adam feels as though they were given a resource with the Hub of Hope, only to have the concourses taken away. While Adam has past criminal

convictions, he more so fears for the homeless individuals who suffer from mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities and raises the issue of public bathroom usage in the train station. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Their mental capacities are not strong enough, their physical appearance, their clothing. You have to be professionally dressed for an interview, why can't I take care of my hygiene â&#x20AC;Ś in these public transportation places?â&#x20AC;? explained Adam. â&#x20AC;&#x153;SEPTA put in those SEPTA Key Cards now, so to get behind the bathrooms, you have to swipe your Key Card. So, they are taking away public restrooms and spots where I can keep my body clean, so if I wanted to go chase a job, how can I do it?â&#x20AC;?

As of now, two of the three bathrooms in the concourse of Jefferson and Suburban Station are sectioned off by paid areas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tommy,â&#x20AC;? last name also omitted for privacy, noted the non-paid public restroom is sometimes closed earlier than the others or customarily tagged as â&#x20AC;&#x153;temporarily out of service.â&#x20AC;?

SEPTA is primarily funded by the State, as per SEPTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fiscal Year 2018 Operating Budget. SEPTA stations constitute a privatepublic space, in which the space is privately owned, even with the large State and Federal funding, but is legally open to the public.

When ask about the ofďŹ cial operation hours for the bathrooms, Busch did not have an answer during two separate interviews.

SEPTA was not able to comment about hours of the restrooms in time for the publication of

this article.

Busch explained the placement of the turnstiles in the concourse, which has created problems for riders and non-riders, was decided on after careful consideration. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where they've ended up is a result of really extensive design work on how to best accommodate customers and making sure that we are doing it in a safe way. It's a transition to be sure, but a lot of factors went into that,â&#x20AC;?

Busch said.

Even with the designâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s logic and planning, the homeless seem to be one â&#x20AC;&#x153;factorâ&#x20AC;? not taken into account. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They used to have benches all over, but people were sleeping on them,â&#x20AC;? said Raleigh Coward, a homeless man eating a sandwich in Suburban Station. During his conversation with PW, a police ofďŹ cer came over and instructed him not to fall asleep. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Happens all the time. They said go up, go outside and get some air. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really want anyone sleeping down here. I just took my medicine, so I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to start,â&#x20AC;? continued Coward, 66, who is a diabetic, of this encounter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be back again, down here, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really sleep when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re homeless. You sleep, but you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sleep good. You can get hurt down here, there was just a ďŹ ght here the other day.â&#x20AC;?

THE HUB OF HOPE The services provided by the Hub of Hope are not a free-for-all. People are able to sign up for individual slot times for various services at the site, located in Suburban Station which is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some weekend hours.

According to Jeffrey, The Hub of Hope has had more than 26,000 visits from approximately 2,000 individuals since opening at the end of January. Thus far, the largest number of people the Hub of Hope has cared for in a single day is 412. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everyone comes in and they sign up for showers, laundry and medical visits. They are brought back one at a time. It's not just wide open because it's our medical facility and these people need privacy when they are showering,â&#x20AC;? said Jeffrey, who hopes the Hub of Hope can expand to other stations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one should have to live in the train station. We know that the Hub of Hope is a piece in the solution,â&#x20AC;? Jeffrey continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The solution for folks taking refuge in places that are not meant for habitation is for all of us to get together to build affordable housing and provide enough services for folks. So that is what we are focusing on.â&#x20AC;?

SEMBLANCE OF SOME SECURITY While the train station shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a ďŹ rst choice for a good nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rest, for many in the homeless community, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s their safest bet.

A homeless woman, who remains anonymous for safety reasons, spoke to PW just after being woken up by police. Even with the routine check-ins by police, she still prefers to

stay in the Suburban Station concourse because of the added security. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been raped, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had my stuff stolen,â&#x20AC;? the woman alleged. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really hard to ďŹ nd somewhere safe and comfortable to sleep.

You have to carry everything with you at all times, and you never know if you can trust someone or if you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

When asked about violence in the train stations, Jeffrey spoke with her outreach coordinators who stay at the stations and at the Hub of Hope on a continual basis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They haven't seen a change in terms of people not being welcome or increased incidences of violence or anything like that [so] they just don't have [those] concerns at the moment.â&#x20AC;?

A day after Jeffreyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comment, Jefferson Station topped news cycles after a violent stabbing of a homeless man. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The homeless people hurt the other [homeless] people â&#x20AC;Ś rarely, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the riders.

Down here, they got cameras. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see them, but they see you,â&#x20AC;? said Coward, who has seen a number of ďŹ ghts in the train stations, including at the Hub of Hope, a place where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actually been medically advised to not go to. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I go to Hub, but the Hub is not good to go to. There is a lot of germs in the Hub. My doctor told me to stay out of the Hub. People are coughing all the time, it smells,â&#x20AC;? explained Coward.

Constantly by Cowardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mad Max,â&#x20AC;? a makeshift cane topped with large gold and red beads that he uses as a safety precaution against attacks. But even with the violence and hard drug use in the train stations, he still afďŹ rmed the concourse is safer than the streets and shelters, many of which have to turn people away due to a lack of space.

Coward has a SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID Card, a new service funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery that provides free transportation for senior citizens. Jeffrey said SEPTA has been working on making a similar free service for people with disabilities, who currently have reduced fair, which would help a wide base of the homeless population.

Jeffrey said SEPTA has been very receptive to the issues Project HOME has raised about SEPTA Key, including its lack of single rides. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We've given out a lot of tokens over the years to help people get where they need to go,â&#x20AC;? said Jeffrey. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The lack of a single ride option is a challenge for us.â&#x20AC;?

Jeffrey also relayed that she has been in talks with SEPTA about the issues raised from this article, including bathroom accessibility.

As for future programs directly for the homeless in the train stations, Busch replied, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It's always a struggle when we talk about ďŹ nding new funding sources, but if someone were to come up with a new approach those are always things we consider.â&#x20AC;? Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

ytan Shander started out as one of us.

Shander, who hosts shows on The Fanatic (97.5-FM), is now on the radio at all times. If Mike Missanelli is out, Shander takes over his show during the afternoon. If Anthony Gargano is on vacation, Shander calls the shots on the morning show. He also hosts an extremely popular show on weekends.

Now, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the guy running the show on the popular

sports talk station, but growing up, Shander was one of the guys in the 700 level at Veterans Stadium. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m from New York, but my uncle was a huge Eagles fan and he would take me to games,â&#x20AC;? Shander said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love the Eagles. My uncle is from South Philly and he is the one who got me to become a fan, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really inďŹ&#x201A;uenced a lot of what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m doing.â&#x20AC;?

Now heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the most trusted and popular voices in Philly sports radio, but Shander certainly worked his way into this position.

After graduating with a philosophy degree from

Gettysburg College, he went on to study at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. Ever since graduating there in 2004, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been working in radio. But it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always the glamorous life of talking sports with Philly sports fans.

He did whatever it took to get his foot in the door. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I worked at a small station in Atlantic City and got to learn so much there,â&#x20AC;? Shander said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not all on the air, I was doing everything they needed. When I ďŹ rst got in, I was working in the promotions department. I would do a lot of data entry, typing in names of people who would enter contests at remotes. I would go to remotes, going to places like a car dealership and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have to set up huge inďŹ&#x201A;atable cats. People would come up and ask for them. It was nuts.â&#x20AC;?

He also took a job in Princeton at an ESPN Radio afďŹ liate, and then he headed to Nashville, where he got his ďŹ rst break in big market radio.

In a return to Philly, he landed at WIP (94.1-FM) where he would mostly work as a producer and an update guy, but eventually got an overnight shift. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was very lucky because in my career,â&#x20AC;? Shander said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had two legends help me, Angelo Cataldi and Michael Smerconish. Both helped me. They would encourage me and give me advice. Jason Myrtetus, who hosts the midday show now, but he helped get me on the air and (former WIP program director) Andy Bloom helped me. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been very lucky to have so many great people helping me. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it alone.â&#x20AC;?

On Aug. 25, Shander alongside many of his colleagues now at The Fanatic will host Fan Fest, an all-day party where the station takes over XďŹ nity Live celebrating all things Philadelphia. An unofďŹ cial kickoff to football season, Fan Fest gives fans a chance to hang out with people they listen to on the radio every day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great day, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be hanging at the bar, buying drinks for people,â&#x20AC;?

Shander said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re giving away a trip to London for the Eagles game and Ben Simmons will be there, hanging out for a little bit. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bands there, we rent out XďŹ nity Live and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our chance to say thank you to all the people who listen.â&#x20AC;?

Shander added that being a man of the people is quite possibly the best aspect of the job. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the biggest thing Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned is when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in this line of work, you want to be with the

people,â&#x20AC;? Shander continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some guys will go to a remote, smile and then do their show. I go early. I want to talk to the people. I love talking to people. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great to talk to people who agree with you, but I love talking to people who disagree with you.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what makes sports talk fun.â&#x20AC;?

Another thing that makes Shanderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job fun is the current state of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sports scene. Right now, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge hot streak. The Flyers are competitive, the Phillies and Sixers look like theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re starting to head to the top of their sports after long rebuilds and the Eagles are the world champions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think Philadelphia has ever had what they have now,â&#x20AC;?

Shander said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the Sixers, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t remember this, even when we had [Allen] Iverson. That was a great time, we knew we had a great player, but this is different. The Phillies, look, [2008] was great, but now we have every team. And the Eagles are coming off the Super Bowl. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never experienced.

Fan Fest will be celebrating all of that.â&#x20AC;?

Fan Fest will be one day for the fans to get together and talk sports.

But Shander will be doing that for the foreseeable future. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still focused on doing his best at the Fanatic. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also now doing a segment on Fox 29â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Good Day Philadelphia and does some work for SB Nation, a national sports website that hosts blogs and podcasts.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s come a long way from when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s started, but heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still doing his best to pick up tricks of the trade.

He wants to continue to do what he loves most â&#x20AC;&#x201C; discuss sports and pop culture in the place he loves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to keep getting better,â&#x20AC;?

Shander said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I will watch other guys. I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do what they do, or use their bits, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll learn another way to talk to someone. You have to keep learning. You have to run a show that people like. Sometimes when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not talking sports, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll talk about TV shows, so you have to stay up and watch TV or NetďŹ&#x201A;ix.â&#x20AC;?

Another motivating factor? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a reďŹ&#x201A;ection of opportunity and work. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a family, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m 39 years old, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m able to be ďŹ&#x201A;exible because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not married, I can do whatever they need. CLIMATE HERO NOMINEE: SARAH WU Deputy Director of the City of Philadelphia's OfďŹ ce of Sustainability Sarah Wu certainly has a number of environmental wins under her belt. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe that transparent and accountable local governments hold great power to improve the lives of their residents, and that without preparation, climate change will dramatically decrease quality of life, particularly for historically marginalized communities,â&#x20AC;? said Wu to Green Philly.

After writing the 2016 report â&#x20AC;&#x153;Growing Stronger: Toward a Climate Ready Philadelphia,â&#x20AC;? Wu kept up the momentum by overseeing Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s institutionalized changes to better protect the earth against climate change. An advocate for local climate initiatives, Wu has helped with Drexelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 80 x 50 report, Pennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Data Refuge Project and the Franklin Instituteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Climate Urban Systems Partnership (CUSP).

Wu also chairs Sustainability Directors Networkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Equity Working Group as well as founded and co-chairs the Philadelphia Food Policy Advisory Council.

SOCIAL IMPACT NOMINEE: JILL FINK Jill Fink as got a lot of Moxieâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; Food Moxie that is! The executive director has helped serve 3,500 low-income and underserved individuals. Teaching individuals how to grow and prepare their own food, Food Moxieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission is give agency, in the form of healthy and affordable food options, to marginalized communities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe that adding value to the lives of others enriches my own life, and have chosen a career path that allows me to live my life in a way that beneďŹ ts others,â&#x20AC;? In 2014, Frink founded the triple bottom line Mugshots Coffeehouse, which she sold to High Point Cafe in 2017. The coffee shop which used fairly-traded and locally-sourced products and uses 100 percent wind power, won the Triple Bottom Line Award from the Sustainable Business Network in 2005.

Sustainable Communities Nominee: Riverbend Environmental Education Center When textbooks just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cut it, leave it to Riverbend Environmental Education Center to make the grade for teaching STEM and environmental education to Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth. Driving the conversation Valet workers join as band of brothers against parent company that fired them

n June, six Impark parking attendants that work outside of Penn Medicine were ďŹ red, for a variety of given reasons. But they all had one thing in common: they were leading a unionization effort among their coworkers.

On Aug. 9 they were reinstated to their positions.

And on Monday, Aug. 11, all six returned to work.

The workers, most of them African immigrants, had gathered with union organizers from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 32BJ in protest when they received word of their reinstatement.

The rally turned into a celebration of sorts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am happy to have my job back so I can better support my familyâ&#x20AC;? said Surafel Fisiha, an Ethiopian immigrant and one of the ďŹ red parking attendants. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My co-workers will see that when we ďŹ ght back, we can win. This is just the beginning; we will continue to ďŹ ght for good jobs for all parking attendants in the city"

Impark, a Canadian company headquartered in Vancouver, operates around 3,400 lots across North America and employs close to 9,000 people. Fisiha and his coworkers told the Inquirer that Impark intervened in their drive out of fear of losing their contract with Penn Medicine. A spokesman for the company called the claim â&#x20AC;&#x153;unfounded.â&#x20AC;? And when asked for comment by Philly Weekly, Patrick Norton, Penn Medicineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vice president of Public Affairs, distanced the hospital from the parking attendantsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ďŹ rings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While they are not directly employed by Penn Medicine, we value the contributions these individuals make each day to help fulďŹ ll our mission to care for patients and their families,â&#x20AC;? Norton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We respect employeesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; right to organize and have never indicated that any efforts to do so would impact our current contract with Impark/DLC.â&#x20AC;?

The valets began circulating a petition among their peers days before they were let go. One of the workers, Fatoman Traore, a Malian immigrant, claims over 90 people signed. It is illegal to terminate workers for attempting to unionize; Fisiha was called in to speak with management and told that he was being ďŹ red for leaving work early one day in May to play soccer.

He disputes those claims.

Similarly, Traore recalled that he took his scheduled break, walked to a nearby CVS to pick up medicine and a newspaper, and then went to the bank, before returning to work.

When he returned, a supervisor approached, Traore says, and accused him of going missing for two hours.

Other workers received similar dismissals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Four, ďŹ ve guys got ďŹ red for nothing, for the same reason, they just came up with some phony reason and [handed us] a statement,â&#x20AC;?

Traore said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They wanted people to sign it. I said â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not gonna sign this.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Shortly after the six valets circulated their petition, Impark posted a workplace memo that accused SEIU of spreading misinformation and taking aim at Fisiha himself: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The important thing is that Surafel knows what he did and hopefully he will encourage others not to make the same mistake,â&#x20AC;? the memo read.

Impark did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

In the interim, the union ďŹ led an unfair labor labor relations complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. Follow-ups for complaints of that kind often take months to materialize. Daisy Cruz, the Mid-Atlantic director for SEIU told PW, the organization is focused on making sure the workers can â&#x20AC;&#x153;work, and have the right to organize without being intimidated and just talk about the working conditions and wages, and other things. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been in talks with these workers, even through today,â&#x20AC;? Cruz told PW during the protest, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and a lot of them are saying â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;our number one priority is to make sure we get

The unionization drive will continue, Cruz said. The union says parking attendants from around the city have joined in their push to organize. Most pay for their health insurance out of pocket, and make less than $10 an hour, according to a press release from Local 32BJ. Many work second jobs.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the amount of workers represented by unions in the state fell by 3 percent between 2007 and 2017. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a drop of around 165,000 workers. Union membership peaked in 1974, when over 37 percent of workers in the state were represented by a union. That number was a hair over 12 percent last year.

State lawmakers again last year introduced a series of bills, part of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Open Workforce Initiative,â&#x20AC;? to make Pennsylvania a Right To Work state, which would end compulsory membership for workers in a unionized shop. Proponents say it gives individuals freedom to choose; union organizers say it severely undercuts their ability to collectively bargain on their behalf.

As for service workers generally, with the Pennsylvania minimum wage stalled at $7.25-an-hour, many make less than their counterparts in 32 other states. Every state that shares a border with the Pennsylvania sets their minimum wage at least a dollar above ours.

After years on the job, a recent 17-centsan-hour raise bumped one of the ďŹ red workers, Thomas Frezgi, up to an hourly pay rate of $10.08. His coworker, Traore, had worked for the company for six years longer than Frezgi and was pulling in $9.48 an hour, the two told the Inquirer.
