Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be stupid, people KERITH GABRIEL

W

ith all the news and urging for folks to get to drier land if they live in the path of Hurricane Florence and for us here in Philadelphia, who still plan to receive residuals in the form of a lot of rainfall, I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but think about Hurricane Katrina.

I know there have been a lot since Katrina to pound the area, perhaps none greater felt for those in the tri-state area like us after what Hurricane Sandy did to our coastlines and the rain, ďŹ&#x201A;ooding and damage that Category 2 storm did to parts of the city and surrounding areas.

But my thoughts arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t about the damage, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about the people Florence, a Category 4 storm pulling 130 mile an hour winds, will ultimately effect. Katrina, a Category 5, decimated many parts of Louisiana and Texas, some parts that 15 years later still look as if the storm happened yesterday. The relief efforts were slow, the cleanup and rebuild efforts even slower as many decided to succumb to the fact and play life out elsewhere.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a reality in part by a slow federal response to alleviate the burden on American citizens, many, if you recall, were from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and who strongly felt their slow relief came as a result.

All week, the Trump Administration and President himself have been adamant the feds are up to the task and are ready with relief efforts to rescue, restore and rebuild what assuredly will a level event similar to what we saw in the aftermath of Katrina.

However, during a recent interview with MSNBC, Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, the Army commander former President George W. Bush sent in six days after the storm hit New Orleans, said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not sure why the Administration is also boasting preparedness and that alone should scare the hell out of residents in the path of the storm.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand the government giving a whole lot of assurance that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready because weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re never ready for a Category 4,â&#x20AC;? Honore told MSNBC. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to be ready for is the response â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to be able to bring assets beyond what the states have and bring that massive military force, those [Navy] ships that have left [the Carolina coastline], and bring them back in to help save lives.â&#x20AC;?

According to USA Today, the Federal Emergency Management Team notes it has 80,000 liters of water, 402,000 meals, 1,200 cots and 34 generators ready for activation at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Numbers Honore scoffed at. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We measure water a gallon a day for people. We evacuated over a million [during Hurricane Katrina],â&#x20AC;? Honore said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those [current FEMA] numbers donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work.â&#x20AC;?

You hear this from a former general and you ask yourself, whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to happen to those people? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m worried about basement ďŹ&#x201A;ooding as a result of residual rain, while many folks are going to come home to nothing and a response you know will be as bureaucratic as ever.

For those in Florenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s path, ďŹ ngers and toes are crossed that things arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as bad as they predict. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hoping folks werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t silly who had the means to evacuate to stay and â&#x20AC;&#x153;ride it out.â&#x20AC;?

Also, take a minute or so to think about those who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the meansâ&#x20AC;Ś For us in Philadelphia, unless these models change after the time you read this, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re expecting nothing more than a wet weekend. Keep an eye on your fellow citizens and how this all plays out since thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no telling if one day we could be the ones seeking drier land.

I end this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s column with this quote from that Honore interview, and his words regarding government preparedness that really provided perspective into how these events are handled.

Remember, these are the words of a decorated former Army general. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a magniďŹ cent storm. People need to listen; they need to evacuate, because I will not bet any money that we are prepared.â&#x20AC;? Q

Philly based artist-photographer Kara Khan says she consulted for months with a local company for the creation of an art installation. Five days before the event, they cancelled the contract and displayed what she felt was her work anyway.

sk any starving artist and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll agree that the old cliche of imitation being the ďŹ nest form of ďŹ&#x201A;attery only applies if your getting paid for your inspiration.

This is Kara Khanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mantra. However the Philly-based photographer found herself among a growing list of artists incensed over corporate companies and organizations mimicking their work without attribution.

Khan, 29, is the creator of Polaroid PopUp, a display that asks a poignant question and then through using a Polaroid camera crowdsources people for answers. Their responses are then written as quotes on the Polaroid picture and placed on the wall. Her work was prominently displayed during this summerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Photo Pop Philly exhibit where she asked the question, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Freedom is likeâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;?

The responses were many from all walks of life, a true collaboration of people sharing

very similar mindsets of what freedom looked like in their eyes. An inspiring piece that found Khan receiving a phone call in June from AYS Sports Marketing, an Old Citybased ďŹ rm that works with tennis players.

Khan claims the company explained it was hosting an event called Taste of Tennis and wanted to use Khan as a consultant to create a experiential piece for the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They saw my installation and reached out to me and thought it would work pretty well with an event they were planning,â&#x20AC;? Khan recalled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I said sure, and they said â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;great, send us a quote.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; [Polaroid Pop-Up] had been a new concept I had been working on so I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really have pricing at the ready for them. I sent them a quote, and it was like months of back and forth to try and make the quote work for them.â&#x20AC;?

Khan claims she and AYS reached an agreement on a price, but just ďŹ ve days before the event, the organization informed her the agreed asking price simply was not in the budget. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We ďŹ nally came to an agreement, but like ďŹ ve days before their event, they backed out saying [they] didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the budget for this,â&#x20AC;?

said Khan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were like â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re so sorry, we really wanted to work with you, we just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the budget.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; This is after I had spoken with them back and forth over the phone over email, after I had spoken with their design team. Five days before.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;My jaw just droppedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Khan says she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know why she did it, it was just a weird curiosity.

The day after the event, she was perusing stories on Instagram when she landed on AYSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Instastory. In the background of the picture was a picture of a very similar photo wall with the words â&#x20AC;&#x153;Winning Feels Likeâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;? followed by Polaroid responses from attendees at the event. She then clicked AYSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; main page to ďŹ nd another image of organizers and attendees in front of the wall that even more clearly looked unmistakable to her design. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My jaw dropped on the ďŹ&#x201A;oor,â&#x20AC;? Khan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They literally did my same exact concept and design without paying me. I was searching hashtags and had ďŹ rst seen [the display] on [AYSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;] Instagram story, something that was really very similar to my work. They even had a line [in the Instastory] that read something

That may or may not be your thing, but what should be your thing is a little thing Aretha Franklin wrote a song about â&#x20AC;&#x201C; something called respect.

If you boil down both the #metoo alongside other feminist movements of recent years to their simplest form, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about just that. Respect towar women. Respect toward transgender people. Respect toward gay people. Respect toward everybody, really. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a concept thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much simpler on paper than in practice, but Shawna Potter, lead singer of War on Women, is here to help with that.

Potter authored her very ďŹ rst book, Making Spaces Safer: A Pocket Guide as an attempt to help the music venues her band plays work to make their music-

listening environments more conducive to combating sexual assault and harassment. On Sept. 13, Potter will discuss her new book and more at the Wooden Shoe bookstore on the 700 block of South Street.

Later that night, War on Women headlines the First Unitarian Church in Center City. Before all of that, she caught up with PW to provide insight on the creation of her ďŹ rst book, and what she hopes itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ultimately accomplish in the music landscape.

First off, can you tell me a little bit about why you decided to write your book, Making Spaces Safer: A Pocket Guide?

Well, one reason was just that it seemed efďŹ cient. I do training locally and on the road with my band War on Women and I realized I was having the same conversations with people everywhere I went so it made sense to kind of all put it in one book, in one place, so

Don Gardnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impact on jazz and soul is immeasurable and one that many say will be felt in the music community for a lifetime.

Music community mourns loss of Philly R&B and jazz legend Donald Gardner

usic lost another unmistakable pioneer with the death of acclaimed R&B artist Donald Gardner, who passed away Sept. 4 in his hometown of Philadelphia.

He was 87.

The singer, songwriter and drummer departs gifting a repertoire of beloved songs, including the chart-topping 1962 hit â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Need Your Loving,â&#x20AC;? also referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Need Your Lovin.â&#x20AC;? The song was later covered by many artists, most notably Otis Redding, Tom Jones and Jackie Wilson.

Born on May 9, 1931, to Raymond and Naomi Gardner, Gardner showed a quick afďŹ nity for music at a young age. Picking up the guitar and vocals on his own, the self-taught teenager entered the professional music circuit in 1947.

An artist before his time, Gardner was praised at home and abroad for his blend of R&B and jazz. This genre combo would soon gain the title of soul.

In 1953, the solo performer opted for a band dynamic, creating the Sonotones. After bringing Dee Dee Ford on board as keyboardist, the group was in full swing, releasing a number of hit singles. The Sonotones made waves in the early 1960s with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Glory of Love,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t You Worryâ&#x20AC;? and of course, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Need Your Lovin.â&#x20AC;?

Eventually, Gardner and Ford parted ways. Gardner returned to a solo career but routinely collaborated with other artists, such as Jeanette "Baby" Washington in the 1970s to record â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lay A Little Lovinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; On Me.â&#x20AC;? Over the span of his career, Gardner would also work with Dinah Washington, Billy Eckstine and Count Basie.

In 2015, Gardner spoke with Auction Finds about his performing heydays. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Honey, you have to live it, you have to be there,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was amazing people. On stage, they were one way. When they came off stage, they were like me and you, but if they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be bothered theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d let you know. Especially Dinah. If she liked you, you knew it because sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d cuss you out. Give you the shirt off her back. I think I came up at the right time and I always told my mother, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Boy, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad you and daddy got together.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; This was really the time to be out here.â&#x20AC;?

Gardner also discussed in the 2015 interview about the changing tides in the music scene and the crumbling bonds between artists. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We shared with each other.

I could go see Sonny Stitt and ask him for anything, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d give me an answer. I could go see Lionel [Hampton], heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d do the same thing. [Count] Basie, any of them,â&#x20AC;? Gardner explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You go see people now, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re so busy with all these people around them you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even get to talk to them.â&#x20AC;?

A true vocation, Gardner never retreated from the world of music. Gardner held several hats in the industry, including an artist and repertoire (A&R) manager and nightclub owner into the 1980s. In the 1990s, Gardner would enter a new role as the board president of the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts. Defending the legacy of jazz, Gardner would become a mentor and advocate for young jazz musicians.

In the wake of Gardnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, industry artists have spoke of his inďŹ&#x201A;uence on their careers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He encouraged me to try out as a guitar player for Jack McDuffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s organ quartet,â&#x20AC;? said jazz guitarist, singer and songwriter George Benson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believed I had no chance of getting that gig, but Don was conďŹ dent that I could achieve my goal. I tried out and I got the gig. I was 19 years old and that was the beginning of a career I could never had imagined.â&#x20AC;?

Gardner is survived by his son Darryl Baynes (Linda), daughter Trina Reaves (Edmund), seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Q In celebration of Gardnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, a memorial service will be held Oct. 11-12 at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts, located at 738 S. linded by the headliners at the recent Made in America Festival, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to overlook the smaller local artists. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to sideline Armani White.

Spitting lyrics at the Skate Stage, festivalgoers started coming in droves to the West Philly performerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s set. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Who is that?â&#x20AC;? one attendee asked.

Even with having lost his voice earlier that morning, the 22-year-old â&#x20AC;&#x153;killed backâ&#x20AC;? ginger shots and maintained a high-energy and well-executed performance throughout the set. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a local and as a performer in general

After his performance, White hopped onto other MIA stages to help out fellow homegrown artists, like Louis Futon. This was the ďŹ rst MIA the artist attended as a performer, but not as a fan. In 2011, White was on the Parkway to hear music mogul and rapper JayZ announce the inception of the annual festival and has since gone to many of the annual Labor Day Parkway weekends since. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Me] being from the city of Philadelphia, being an attendee of Made in America since it started â&#x20AC;Ś [and now] being on the stage, it is really exciting and powerful for me,â&#x20AC;? said White.

Jim Kenney had a change of heart on relocating the festival from the Parkway in the future. White believes having the musical festival at the Parkway, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the nucleus of the city, other than City Hall,â&#x20AC;? gives the city a real leg to stand on when being held up to other major cities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[The festival and its location] is powerful for the city in an optimistic way. I think it is powerful for the city in a monetary way,â&#x20AC;? White explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It's just a powerful thing to keep driving the city of Philadelphia to be the premier city that it is.â&#x20AC;?

Passionate about his hometown, White explained his sound tries to â&#x20AC;&#x153;carry the weightâ&#x20AC;? of Philly hip-hop and rap music, from Kenny Gamble to fellow 2018 MIA performer Meek Mill.

White admired Mill for coming back to the music scene after leaving prison and taking on criminal justice reform. According to White, his own brother has been locked up for four years on a wrongful conviction. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a great thing to become a more humble person in a very humbling situation,â&#x20AC;? said White of Mill. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think having someone championing that is really important for Philly.â&#x20AC;?

Mill also represents the â&#x20AC;&#x153;passing of the batonâ&#x20AC;? for White, a â&#x20AC;&#x153;hungryâ&#x20AC;? artist, ready to claim his spot as Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next music legend.

But by no means is White a new up-and-comer on the Philly music scene.

In 2015, White was making headway and newslines as the next big rapper. As life would have it, things took a spiral when Whiteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father, Lee Tolbert, died of prostate cancer the following year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a setback â&#x20AC;Ś I was on a really dark path and those were dark days of my life,â&#x20AC;? White recalled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Who would have told me then that you would go through that, reach the bottom, have your own deďŹ nition of what rock bottom is and bounce back from that rock bottom?â&#x20AC;?

Bounce back, he has. Back at the mic and with his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;spiritâ&#x20AC;? guiding him, White is more determined than ever to make it as an artist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I'm not grateful to have experienced it, but I'm grateful to have come out on the other side of that experience and be able to keep driving to bigger and better opportunities and to create another momentum that is even more unbreakable than 2015,â&#x20AC;? White.

Having a number of singles under his belt, including the most recent title â&#x20AC;&#x153;Public School,â&#x20AC;? White divulged he will be announcing the release of his ďŹ rst album in the next couple of weeks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We did a lot of sessions, just me and a bunch of singers from the city, a lot of different instrumentalists ... and we just get together in the studio and we just banged out all of these records,â&#x20AC;? said White of the upcoming album, mentioning the not-yet-released â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wonderfulâ&#x20AC;? is his new favorite song. In regard to the meaning or message of his work, White does not pigeonhole himself to one platform. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As long as I'm preaching positivity in some form or [another] â&#x20AC;Ś producing something thought-provoking, then I could have various messages,â&#x20AC;? said White. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[The songs] could portray for you to do something or for you to be something or for you to learn something or for you to take something away whenever you press play.â&#x20AC;? A

s a child, Jeremy Gable kept a secret in his ultraconservative hometown up in northern Idaho: tap dance.

Mustering up the courage and imbuing as much â&#x20AC;&#x153;masculinityâ&#x20AC;? into tap as possible, Gable ďŹ nally showcased his skills at a talent show. After his performance, one classmate congratulated him on not looking â&#x20AC;&#x153;gayâ&#x20AC;? during his routine.

Now the 36-year-old will be tapping into his past in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fringe Festival show â&#x20AC;&#x153;4Solo.â&#x20AC;?

Presented by Simpatico Theatre, the performance is comprised of four one-man acts. From a plot to kill singer Bjork to a Kate Winslet obsession, each section ruminates on the ideas of masculinity in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world. The acts include: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Best of Me,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thomas is Titanic,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;LUVR writtenâ&#x20AC;? and

Gable said of the impetus for the show. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think it's important that we take a look at what that means and how how one can be a man in America without having to succumb to masculinity.â&#x20AC;?

Directed by Gableâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife Brey Ann Barrett, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Idaho ShufďŹ&#x201A;eâ&#x20AC;? combines narrative and tap into a contemplation of the stigma associated with male dance through the lens of his own experiences. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was difďŹ cult for me to ďŹ nd a place there, just because I wasn't a boy that ďŹ t in the way

A Northern Plains upbringing and a love of tap was not the easiest of combinations for tap dancer/playwright Jeremy Gable, creator of the upcoming Fringe production of 4Solo.

that other boys do,â&#x20AC;? said Gable. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didn't really seem to talk like other boys or get interested in outdoorsy activities.â&#x20AC;?

Gable eventually left Idaho for California where he did some acting and the occasional musical, but rarely did he get to dance. Since moving to Philly, Gable has hung up his tap shoes for a life as a playwright. As the narrative developer of the feminist theater company Ninth Planet, Gable has written several plays, including â&#x20AC;&#x153;901 Nowhere Streetâ&#x20AC;? (2015) and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Strange Tenantsâ&#x20AC;? (2017) for past Fringe Festivals.

But now, going into â&#x20AC;&#x153;4Solo,â&#x20AC;?

Gable is breaking the old shoes out of retirement to tell his story and how tap was not only a source of enjoyment for him, but also a representation of how societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s views on masculinity and where they â&#x20AC;&#x153;frowned upon things that could be seen as ďŹ&#x201A;amboyant.â&#x20AC;?

When asked about the time and place of a male-centered story in what is being referred to as the second â&#x20AC;&#x153;Year of the Woman,â&#x20AC;? Gable responded with the cyclical and systemic issues of the patriarchy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Men] have to be able to take a look at ourselves and see what we've been doing and how we can continue to do better and be better,â&#x20AC;? explained Gable.

Gable noted his excitement to ďŹ nally show Philadelphia his talent, a skill he hid as a child and placed on the back-burner as an adult. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hopefully [it will be] a nice surprise for people to see that I have this thing in my back pocket but I never really revealed,â&#x20AC;? said Gable.

But with excitement, comes the difďŹ culty of getting back into the swing of tap and having old memories of ostracization resurface. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I'm certainly not the spring chicken that I used to be, so doing the physical aspect of reconnecting to tap dance has been a good kind of struggle,â&#x20AC;? said Gable. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It's deďŹ nitely fun, but it's also not easy. In Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone, sociologist Eric Klinenberg unpacked this remarkable statistic: More than 50 percent of adult Americans are single and live alone, up from 22 percent in 1950. Some are unhappy about living alone, but it seemed that most â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at least according to Klinenbergâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are content. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Maybe there is something wrong with AAF, but maybe heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just on the unlucky side of the statistics,â&#x20AC;? said Hobbes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Finding a soul mate is largely out of our control.

I just believe in being honest. And if Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m honest, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m ugly. The face, even behind a big-ass beard, is just not acceptable. I have tried therapy, and it does nothing. Maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 95 percent or maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 5 percent, but they are out there. When you ďŹ nd them, do two things: First, believe them. Second, shut up about it.â&#x20AC;?

In other words: Just because you wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to sleep with you, UGLY, that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean no one wants to sleep with you. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I remember reading an interview with Stephen Fry, where he said that when he ďŹ rst started out as an actor, people would come up to him and say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You were so great in that play!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and his ďŹ rst response would be, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;No, I was terrible,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? said Hobbes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He thought he was being modest, but what he was really doing, he realized later, was being argumentative. Eventually, he started to just say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Thank you.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?
