A

bout a month ago, I had to go into the dentistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce for a what I thought was a routine check-up. I later learned that it was a cavity so bad I was going to need a root canal and a sizable ďŹ lling.

The pain during and after was rough, but manageable with a few ibuprofen as long as I stayed on top of it. That didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop my dentist in readily prescribing a 30-day supply of Oxycodone. It took nothing of her to prescribe 60 opiates for a cavity. Sixty.

I never ďŹ lled it, because I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need it, but it shed light on just how easy it is to get opiates from a prescription. If I could down a monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s supply for a decayed tooth, I can only imagine what a hospital doc might readily sign on a pad for a broken arm or major surgery.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard time and time again stories of people who down these pills, get hooked, realize heroin is a cheaper and many times more potent option, and become addicts before they even know it. You then realize big pharma is just as guilty in the opioid crisis as the cartels bringing in brown bricks of lethal heroin.

But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not that lethal. As long as an emergency medical technician can get to someone thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overdosed in time with a drug almost equally as popular â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Narcan â&#x20AC;&#x201C; then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good chance of survival and in many cases a chance to start the vicious cycle all over again.

end? Hell no, not when they can boast big portfolios at annual stockholder meetings and appear as the shining white knight in a dark crisis.

So whereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the solve? You can go after big pharma, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re untouchable with their lobbyists and other friends on Capitol Hill. Plus, we as a society will happily take a monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s supply of Oxy for a toothache so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not like thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enough people saying no to shut down the shop. You can go after the low-lying dealer selling the shit under EL stops to eager addicts with no way out, but that dealer is getting it from a bigger dealer, getting it from a cartel and that river is never going to stop.

So we go after the addict. We try criminalizing, de-criminalizing, calling national emergencies, but in sections of our fair city you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go a block without seeing a syringe, a baggy or a spaced-out addict doing whatever they can to get that next hit. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a story that every time you think it gets old there is another unfortunate wrinkle that keeps sucking you back.

In Kensington, the answer was clearing out a large swath of space where addicts hung out and got high. Except the solve for where theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go or what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d do next was never considered. So like bugs scattering from underneath an unearthed stone theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve taken over library lawns, front stoops of churches and have built tent cities under bridges.

The do-gooders do what they can, the city says itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a top priority but seeing the familiar face of an addict walking around rapidly gentrifying sections of Philadelphia is ever-present.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a situation that has no end, yet has become exhausting. To the addict, to residents to the EMTs, police and ďŹ re responders, who at times go out to revive once more the same person they revived earlier that day.

Maybe Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m being a bit of a cynic here, but I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a sad reality that right now the answer to the rampant opioid epidemic is that there is no answer. Q

Life savers

Riding along with Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paramedics on the front line of overdose crisis

A

s the paramedics minister to the patient, Philadelphia Fire Department Lt. Steve McCloskey reassures another man, a fellow heroin user, that he did the right thing by calling for help. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only two things that save lives out here,â&#x20AC;? McCloskey says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jesus and Narcan.â&#x20AC;?

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the popular brand name for naloxone, the opioid-reversing drug that paramedics in Philadelphia administered nearly 4,000 times last year. Medics have just shot a two-milligram dose through the nose of the victim, a middle-aged African-American man, who was found unconscious on a pair of cellar doors under Kensington Avenue. The naloxone in his system, his chest begins to steadily rise and fall.

Eventually, his eyes open.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 4pm on a brisk, late-October afternoon. McCloskey has been following these dispatches in his ďŹ re red SUV since shortly after dawn.

He insists that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a remarkably slow day for a ride along. After all, there have been â&#x20AC;&#x153;onlyâ&#x20AC;? six calls for ODs since midnight.

A supply of naxolone like this can be gone in a matter of days, according to Lt. Steve McCloskey, who routinely transports large supplies of the life-saving drug to needy EMTs.

Last year, the Fire Department dispatched 260,000 ambulances across the city, of which just 14,000 were related to overdoses. A small fraction; nevertheless the practice has become so routine that, in mid-June, the Fire Department implemented a new response code for opioid-related overdose calls. When a â&#x20AC;&#x153;3018â&#x20AC;? chirps across the radio, paramedics ready the naloxone.

It is difďŹ cult to imagine the body count without EMSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; line of defense. Spurred by ultra-potent synthetic opioids like fentanyl, overdoses claimed 906 lives citywide in 2016, and this year is on track to see more than 1,200 such fatalities.

City agencies from behavioral health to the coronerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce are all bearing the burden.

But Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paramedics and EMTs stand on the frontlines of the crisis every day â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and at every step of the way, they see where the system fails. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The easy part is responding and giving people Narcan,â&#x20AC;? Jeremiah Laster, EMSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; deputy commissioner, tells Philly Weekly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The tie-in for us is, how do we get these people to treatment?â&#x20AC;?

Medic 8, whose service area covers the heart of Kensington, sees the same scene play out every day with increasing frequency. In 2008, there were 33 fatal overdoses in the zip that covers this part of the neighborhood. In 2016, the body count climbed to 140.

But even when Medic 8 successfully reverses an overdose, the battle is only half won.

After using naloxone, state law requires medical personnel transport overdose victims to the nearest hospital for evaluation. From their current dispatch on Kensington Avenue, the gothic spires of Temple Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Episcopal Hospital are visible less than a block away.

The emergency room is packed. Medics wheel the victim into triage on a gurney. A weary-eyed supervisor approaches and asks him â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do you want to see a doctor?â&#x20AC;?

The patient shakes his head, and the doctor walks away.

At that, the patient gets up and returns to the Avenue. The entire affair, from naloxone to the emergency room, took about 20 minutes. It still may have cost taxpayers thousands.

On average, an ambulance transport gets billed for $1,200, according to a Fire Department spokesperson. Transports for overdose patients alone cost more than $4.5 million last year, and many of those suffering from addiction remain underinsured. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re paying for it either way.â&#x20AC;? Laster says of the cost to the city. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re paying for it in a jail cell, a hospital bed, or a 911 emergency response.â&#x20AC;?

Then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s naloxone. The cost of a single dose of the life-saving drug has unmercifully tripled in recent years. Between dispatches, McCloskey stops by the Fire Departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s storage warehouse in the Hunting Park neighborhood, where he stocks up on more of the

ast month found Chef Ange Branca, the owner and head chef of Sate Kampar in the kitchen preparing for the second annual Muhibbah Dinner Series. The goal of these dinners which Branca spearheaded was to celebrate diversity and support local organizations that deal with issues that affect a diverse cross-section of people who live in our region.

Feeling the inspiration, Branca stopped her prep work and said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The kind of culture that I grew up with, Muhibbah, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when people of multiple cultures come together to celebrate, and to have an event together, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what this dinner is all about; to bring that diversity together all in one spot, to really experience each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s culture and how else to be better experience it than through food?â&#x20AC;?

Close to 80 people agreed with Branca as they came to dine during what was actually an intimate night at Fishtownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Front & Palmer restaurant.

The ďŹ rst dinner, held earlier this summer, sold out in 10 days, saw 54 guests including Mayor Jim Kenney and raised more than

$6,000, 80 percent of which went to a nonproďŹ t called HIAS Pennsylvania, an organization that provides legal support for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

This particular dinner was raising funds for Nationalities Service Center, an organization that helps resettle refugees, immigrants, victims of human trafďŹ cking, among others. This beneďŹ t dinner was especially important, as according to NPR, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Trump administration plans to cap the number of refugees the United States will accept next year at 45,000. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That is a dramatic drop from the level set by the Obama administration (110,000) and would be the lowest number in years. Refugee resettlement agencies are disappointed with the 45,000 cap, which they say falls far short of what is necessary to meet growing humanitarian needs around the world. They had recommended a limit of at least 75,000.â&#x20AC;?

Resettlement organizations get their funding in part based on how many people they manage to resettle so the quotas have directly impacted them.

The energy at the event was warm and inviting, it started off with a cocktail hour, dim sum and small bites. Branca described the impetus behind the cuisine:

uburban Station is Joyceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s go-to spot.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s well-lit, relatively safe with its police monitoring and as she afďŹ rms is safer than most city shelters.

Sitting on the ďŹ&#x201A;oor near the subway lines with a homeless sign propped up against her hip, Joyce, a transient whose full name is held at her request writes a short story about a dysfunctional family on a notebook as well as the looks she gets from people who pass by her on a daily. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People see the homeless as just a waste, but for many of us, we arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t doing it on purpose,â&#x20AC;? Joyce tells PW eyes afďŹ xed on the words sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scribbled into her notebook. But what [those same people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand is that] we need help now. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s getting cold, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really cold. If we have nowhere to go at night, we could die out here.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a situation, SEPTA, which has found a

number of its station stops become a hub for homeless hangouts has taken diligent notice of. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a record number of people, about 350 people, who were in the [Suburban Station] concourse at peak last year. So I think SEPTA and the City were like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;oh my goodness,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? said Liz Hersh, SEPTA director of homeless services.

It was this harsh reality check over the summer, that fueled partnership between the City of Philadelphia, SEPTA and Project HOME, working with the homeless advocacy center on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hub of Hope,â&#x20AC;? a homeless service center in Suburban Station. For the past six years the original Hub of Hope â&#x20AC;&#x201C; located in another part of the station â&#x20AC;&#x201C; has only been available during the winter season, but SEPTA and the City have co-wrote the check on a $1.4 million bill to make the service spot a permanent feature of the train station.

ter the New Year. An inaugural beneďŹ t for the Hub of Hope is scheduled for Nov. 6 at Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The proceeds from the event will be directly donated to the construction costs of the Hub of Hope and other homeless organizations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know that the location is what makes it a really valuable resource in the city,â&#x20AC;? afďŹ rmed Annette Jeffrey, vice president of development and communications of Project HOME. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are going to have showers and laundry, and that is super important for just basic wellness. People living on the streets, it decreases their life expectancy radically, and health concerns are so dire.â&#x20AC;?

FINDING HELP IN A HOPELESS PLACE The Hub of Hope will have case management services and act as a satellite of Project HOMEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s student-run Klein Wellness Center, which will allow for medical examinations on site. Meals will be served at the center from

Friday through Sunday, and the location will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays as well as weekend hours. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[SEPTA] started talking to everyone. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How can we help the homeless? What do we do?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; said SEPTA general manager Jeff Knueppel, who has been one of the primary cheerleaders in the creation of this 11,400 square-foot underground haven. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our customers werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t concerned, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t affecting our business, but we wanted to deal with an issue that would give the homeless dignity and respect.

We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to just push them somewhere, and make it somebody elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s problem.â&#x20AC;?

Knueppel, who remembers routinely studying in Cooper Unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lobby with a water jug to collect money for the homeless admitted he was â&#x20AC;&#x153;a little concerned raising this as something that is [not the standard] for a transit agency to take such a leadership and a push on.â&#x20AC;?

But he was delighted to ďŹ nd that the whole team was on board. As to whether this could attract more homeless people to the station once the Hub of Hope closes for the day, Knueppel responded, â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are already here.â&#x20AC;?

On the other side of the spectrum is transient Glen Dixon, who can often be found nose-deep in a newspaper or book. But while all of this sounds like a gift, Dixon remains cautiously optimistic about the project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anything like that will help as long as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not an in and out, in and out, in and out thing,â&#x20AC;? argued Dixon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all well and good. But are they doing it to help people, or just to keep people from being seen in the public eye?â&#x20AC;?

Philadelphia has made great strides towards the decriminalization of homelessness.

Currently, transients can stay in Philadelphia train stations as long as they do not lie down on the benches, take up too much space, or participate in illegal activity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have had to deal with increased police work on drugs, primarily by Suburban Station,â&#x20AC;? relayed Knueppel, who believes the Hub of Hope will mitigate the drug problem and get people in contact with needed resources.

The police and homeless population have a long, embattled history. So it comes with some symbolism â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and a whole lot of irony â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that the Hub of Hope is being constructed in the SEPTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former transit police headquarters, an unoccupied space for the past 15 years. A stairwell and elevator connect the concourse to the lower level of the soon-to-be hub, where police signage is still visible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of my fears is that everybody thinks that the Hub of Hope, which is a wonderful, wonderful project, and we are so excited about it, is the answer,â&#x20AC;? voiced Hersh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But it is not enough. It is not going to solve the problem. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be a big step forward.

But we still are going to have a lot of work to do. We still need to provide the housing for people.â&#x20AC;?

Washington was perfect for the role. How did you find him?

I read about 150 kids for the role, looking for a kid who was believable as a boxer and a drag queen. But most of all I needed an actor. Martin found me on Facebook. He sent me a message saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to cast me, this is my whole life, I grew up in Philly, my dad was tough on me, my mom was missing,â&#x20AC;? all these parallels to his personal story. I loved him a lot and tried to cast other roles against him. Going through the whole process made Martin and I super close, and made the character really grounded.

The film presents many different characters in different stages of coming to terms with their sexuality.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the lesson learned by Leo, the protagonist of Shaz Bennettâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fantastic feature length directorial debut Alaska is a Drag, which screened Saturday during the Philadelphia Film Festival.

Leo, played by Philadelphia native Martin L. Washington Jr., is a drag queen who boxes on the side. Or, a boxer who performs in drag on the side. Whichever way you look at it, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stuck in a small

town in Alaska where his lifestyle is looked down upon and often leads to him being tormented. He and his sister are stuck there trying to raise money to pay for her chemotherapy, but they both dream of one day trading in the Northern Lights for the city lights of Los Angeles.

The ďŹ lmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gooey center is encased in a tasty crunchy shell. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bite to it that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t shy away from the struggles its main characters undergo, but Bennett and the cast make it impossible to look away from with their infectious charm.

We caught up with Bennett the day of the screening hours after she ďŹ&#x201A;ew into

I in general am very interested in gender. Something I wonder a lot is, why is it a bad quality for a young boy to have a lot of feminine qualities? Femininity is not a bad thing. A lot of the movie was coming from that. I wanted to explore the time in someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life where they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know what their sexuality is, but people are deďŹ ning them for how they present themselves on the outside.

I grew up with four brothers, played basketball, and was more of a tomboy. I remember being told I was in the wrong bathroom when I was a kid. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m married to a man in real life who I adore, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve deďŹ nitely gone through the gamut of sexuality in my personal life. My experience in small towns is, people just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t talk about stuff like that. I wanted to play around with whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spoken and unspoken.

Why did you choose Alaska as the filmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s setting?

One summer years ago, I went up there to raise money to move to New York City. I fell for an ad that said youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll make $50,000 in a summer. What I ended up doing was slicing and processing ďŹ sh in a cannery, being paid minimum wage for a really horrible job. I think I responded to being in a small town thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so gorgeous and beautiful and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s such incredible ethereal beauty in landscape, but the people there can be unforgiving, and if you stand out in the crowd you can kind of be â&#x20AC;&#x153;other-ized.â&#x20AC;? The additional funds will be used to build 100 new housing units, since as Hersh explained, â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;our philosophy is housing ďŹ rst.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our system runs from 90-to-120 percent of capacity pretty much year round,â&#x20AC;? continued Hersh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The kind of old thinking in the 1980s and 90s when homelessness ďŹ rst emerged on the scene as mass homelessness like we have today, the thinking was shelter, shelter, shelter. Now weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve moved away from shelter, shelter, shelter. What weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve tried to do over the last 20 years is to increase housing, actual places where people can live.â&#x20AC;?

Housing would be a dream for James Polk, but right now, his attention is on ďŹ nding his wife, Joella, who is also homeless in the streets of Philadelphia, but whom he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been able to locate as several mental disorders has displaced her from family and husband, still searching. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the system. The way the system is designed is for people to fail and to become homeless,â&#x20AC;? claims Polk, who allegedly tried to ďŹ le multiple missing person reports, but has been denied, since his wife is an adult.â&#x20AC;? Once you fall into that system, it is hard, really hard to get out.â&#x20AC;?

Although not an answer to the epidemic, the hub will provide people with a safe space to get needed services and to pass the time, which would be at least some relief for those like Yakia Green. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is hard for a female to be homeless, because for females it is easier to get robbed by people, and some women cannot defend themselves,â&#x20AC;? Green said, a cart with all of ther earthly possessions next to her.

For numbers, the statistics on homelessness in Philadelphia do not necessarily align with the problemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s urgency. While Philadelphia has the highest poverty rate amongst major cities, it also claims to have the lowest rate of

homeless.

According to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Point-In-Time count survey in January, where volunteers surveyed sheltered and unsheltered transients, homelessness dropped 7 percent from last year with a current total of 5,693 people. While that may seem like good news, youth homelessness, particularly in the LGBT+ community, is on the rise.

To complicate the matter even further, although the number of homelessness has gone down, the number of unsheltered people who are on the street has gone up to 956 people, a statistic that Hersh largely attributes to the opioid crisis.

Another major factor in the increased visibility of homelessness is the construction of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and Love Park â&#x20AC;&#x201D; two previous hot spots for the homeless. With the closures of these locations, transients have concentrated in areas such as the Convention Center, Suburban Station, and Jefferson Station. The numbers play on perception versus reality, especially for those on the streets. When asked about Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s record low homeless rate, Daymin Miley, a transient, did not believe it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philly has got to be in the top ďŹ ve. I saw this even before I was homeless, but now that I am, I see it even more. That canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be right.

It just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be right,â&#x20AC;? said Miles, a singersongwriter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[There are just] so many homeless people here, it breaks my heart, it really does.â&#x20AC;?

Echoing a collective sentiment, Miley wants people to know the constant struggles of homelessness: â&#x20AC;&#x153;People donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a ďŹ ght to keep your things. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a ďŹ ght every day to keep a roof over your head, utilities, just to keep your life going. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a ďŹ ght, every day itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a ďŹ ght. FILM The movie has already screened at festivals across the country. Does it feel different to screen it in your hometown?

Yeah. There are so many people from the neighborhood, from the badlands, showing up.

People who wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t normally come to 16th and Chestnut and see an art house ďŹ lm, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also in the ďŹ lm. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a beautiful thing to be able to have people who are in the movie be there in their town to be able to celebrate themselves and their work.

You wrote, directed and acted in the movie.

Which would you say was the hardest of the three?

Directing my mom. She just wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t listen to anything I said. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s used to directing me, so suddenly the tables have turned. That was seriously the hardest thing. Even just trying to manage her here tonight continues to be the hardest thing about it [laughs]. But sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredible in the movie, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge gift to me that my mom and my brother were willing to participate in making this piece of art with me.

Philly activist turned potential So, what was your favorite of your three presidential candidate Cheri roles?

I just love making stuff, man. I love making Honkala is the ďŹ lms. I work with the same team; the same DP, star of her sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, the camera operators, the same editor, the same who are friends, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really cool to native director producers make this collaborative piece of art together.

ome families like to watch TV, eat dinner or take vacations together. Mark Webberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family likes to make semiautobiographical movies together.

Webber appeared at the Prince Theater recently for the Philadelphia premiere of his ďŹ lm Flesh and Blood. In the ďŹ lm, he, his mother Cheri Honkala (yes, that Cheri Honkala, who ran for vice president with Jill Stein and is currently petitioning to run as an independent candidate in 2020) and his little brother Guillermo Santos play versions of themselves reenacting various made-up or actual events in their lives.

What may sound like an indulgent vanity project on paper, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. The family has many

stories to tell, including their past struggle with homelessness, both Webberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Guillermoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fathers struggling with health issues, Honkalaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activism and Guillermoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diagnosis with Asperger syndrome, to name just a few.

Webber talked about his movie on the red carpet moments before the screening began.

You grew up in Philadelphia, so what does it mean to you to come back and direct a film in it?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great, man. Philly has informed so much of my work as an artist. I love this city, and I always feel so happy to come back. To make a movie in North Philadelphia where I grew up, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredible.

The movie is still pretty much happening in real life. The things we explore in this movie are steeped in reality and real-life relationships. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty trippy to sit and watch and know the story is continuing. My father actually is in the ďŹ nal stages of his life, and my brotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a beautiful, reďŹ&#x201A;ective process when I sit and watch it. I think my mother and my brother have the same experience. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re able to reďŹ&#x201A;ect on our lives, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I make movies. So people can relate to them and in turn feel a little more connected to the world.

Way harder. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been an actor for awhile, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot easier to work as an actor in a traditional ďŹ lm setup. Using elements from your real life and real family members and people who arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actors is incredibly challenging on every level. But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ultimately the most fulďŹ lling and rewarding about the process, too. When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing something different and unique and it works out, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even that much more fulďŹ lling.

A

s American politics take a decidedly regressive turn, is it ironic or understandable that an openly gay Asian comedian ďŹ nds himself catapulting to fame?

I ask this of Joel-Kim Booster, a stand up who has appeared on multiple late night television shows like Conan, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, @midnight, and recently had his Comedy Central half hour special drop in October.

Now, Philly can check out his skills at Good Good Comedy on Nov. 4, where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll appear on stage with one of his closest friends, Bowen Yang. Yang himself has appeared on Comedy Centralâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Broad City and the hilarious YouTube gay comic series, Lake Homo High. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think ďŹ nding success in this industry has always ďŹ rst and foremost been about being funny. In the past there have been barriers to entry for even funny queer people of color to make it, but over the past decade or so those [barriers] have slowly been knocked down by the sheer force of will of some of my forefathers/mothers in comedy,â&#x20AC;? Booster says noting Guy Branum and Margaret Cho as examples.

As media companies realize the market is much larger and more diverse than straight white audiences, more funny people get to showcase their skills and more people get to see themselves represented. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Suddenly all the little queer kids like me

who werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly spoken to by Dane Cook in high school, the internet has introduced them to me and the industry has changed as a result,â&#x20AC;? said Booster. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the whole idea of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;if you build it they will come.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; In this case, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;if you give a gay Asian dude a comedy special, gay and Asian people will come out to support it.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Asked how much his queerness is a part of his performance, Booster says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;My queerness informs a lot of what I do because I was never able to hide it very well, even when I was actively told to.â&#x20AC;? He added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Part of it is intentional, a ďŹ nger in the face of everyone who ever called me â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fagâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; as an insult, now I sort of own it.â&#x20AC;?

Considering most comedians talk about sex and dating, it would be unusual for him to avoid that kind of content. Plus, he is just obviously hella gay and has joked, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I literally knew I was gay before I knew I was Asian.â&#x20AC;?

Booster explains his story and upbringing as a South Korean child adopted by a white Evan-

gelical couple, raised in an Illinois suburb and homeschooled.

The result? Booster â&#x20AC;&#x153;has read the bible literally dozens of times, and has no idea where the state of Oregon is on a map.â&#x20AC;?

And if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re wondering what was it like being raised in the Midwest for a kid like him, Booster says the Midwest spares no punches with this notable line in his stand-up act: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can tell you with full authority that the Midwest is just as racist as the south, it just has none of the personality. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all the hatred and violence but no sweet tea.â&#x20AC;?

As a fellow queer reared in small town middle America, I had some experience with this. A common issue among Midwesterners is confusing willingness to be polite with not being racist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how I think about the Midwest,â&#x20AC;? he says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;just sweet kids who would never dream of saying a slur or anything to my face, but who all used the same jokes based on broad assumptions because of, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know, the shape of my eyes?â&#x20AC;?

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s managed to channel these experiences into a hilarious, innovative perspective that is resonating with audiences across the country. After only six and a half years in comedy, Booster is ďŹ nding his career ďŹ nally on the map. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got a network TV show in the works and his debut comedy album, Model Minority, will drop soon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wild because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve already met so many of the long-term professional goals I set for myself as a stand-up,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Television has always been a bigger goal. I want to be a showrunner. I look at people like Mindy Kaling and Aziz Ansari â&#x20AC;&#x201D; their careers were big inspirations for me.â&#x20AC;?

As for his upcoming act with his good friend, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an experience that serves a dual purpose â&#x20AC;&#x201C; literally and ďŹ guratively. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bowen and I are both gay Asian men, and rarely get to perform together because I think most people would probably think our perspectives would be too, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know, redundant? But not to shock anybody, but our experiences have been wildly different, as is our comedy,â&#x20AC;? Talk dirty to me TouchTones, a sex farce musical, is the latest at the Arden Theater

or their ďŹ rst show at the Arden Theater as a team â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the initial fruit of a working relationship over 13-years old â&#x20AC;&#x201D; playwright Michael Hollinger and Pennsylvania Ballet/The Crossing composer Robert Maggio talk about sex, baby: the provocative phone sex of TouchTones with its reach toward fantasy and hunt for intimacy.

The arch, 1999-based musical, directed by Emmanuelle Delpech (last seen at the Arden directing 2016â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s The Legend of Georgia McBride) runs from Oct. 26 to its newly-extended runâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end date, Dec. 3, and is yet another chapter in the Ardenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now 30-year-old history. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to separate my working relationship with Terry [Nolen, Ardenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s producing artistic director) with that of him as a producer, let alone as an old friend as all aspects of that overlap,â&#x20AC;? says Hollinger. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Arden, Nolen and I have a shared aesthetic â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we act as storytellers, following characters through their journeys â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that narratively takes care of an audience. The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;90s pop and rock had a sound. We allowed the era to inďŹ&#x201A;uence what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve written â&#x20AC;&#x201C; though the songs feel more about the characters singing them, and the world weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve dropped into â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not THE 90s MUSICAL,â&#x20AC;? laughs the composer.

As Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best representative of punk rock and New Wave turned into adventurous musical theater, TouchTones is right in Jess Condaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wheelhouse.

As the artistic director of the rock-n-rolling Brat Productions, Conda is known for a machine gun-like vocal attack with a gorgeous sense of nuance (check out her YouTube rendition of Pink Floydâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Motherâ&#x20AC;? for proof) and an ever-loving passion for kitsch. But TouchTones and the Arden is different, and this ďŹ rst show for what Conda calls â&#x20AC;&#x153;an institution,â&#x20AC;? is special. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Working at the Arden sets a marker in my career: me diversifying my artist portfolio,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have never done a long run of a regional theater musical, and it requires a different kind of rigor â&#x20AC;&#x201C; hitting technical marks with precision and doing a run of 50 plus shows while keeping the energy feeling fresh. Doing a big regional theater contract means I am literally working â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this is 10 weeks of well paid, concentrated focus on being an actor. It tightens my artistic practice big time. Huge for me as a freelance artist.â&#x20AC;?

Recently trained as part of the Pig Iron Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Le Coq pedagogy, this freelancer is always willing to push her limits.

The Pig Iron training then was super helpful in TouchTones, because the Hollinger-Maggio script had to feel like the everyday world while still being alive and buoyant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our director, Emmanuelle Delpeche, was a teacher of mine at Pig Iron, and is constantly energizing the room with these principles. She has kept us honest and invigorated throughout the process.â&#x20AC;?

When it comes to Condaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s character of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Holly,â&#x20AC;? the actress sees common denominators of eccentric and grounded energy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If this show is an episode of Friends, Holly is like the rock n roll Phoebe,â&#x20AC;? states Conda. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Holly is the character who brings webcams to the ofďŹ ce and preps the staff for new technology.

We sing this funky song, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Sex Ainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t What It Used to Beâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; about this new tech, important because it hits on a moment in time when technology drastically shortened the gap between fantasy and reality. The ability to see real people doing real things in real time was a watershed moment for the way people could interact with their desires. It brought reality ever closer.â&#x20AC;?

As for the topic phone sex and perceived (or deceived) intimacy in the age of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;90s and relationship politics, Conda points out that TouchTones is very much about the heteronormative Christian worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s encounter with the world of sexual freedom and fantasy â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a romantic comedy about a man and a woman trying to ďŹ nd each other and their unexpressed sexual desires. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primary lens isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the world of phone sex workers and callers; rather, it is mainstreamers trying to understand outliers. Its form is a comedic musical romp, a good way to break the ice about this stuff with Arden audiences.

Laughter is always a good way into having real talk. Normalizing stories that are away from the mainstream is important.

My boyfriend supports me, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to talk about the topic, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his father. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Fucking Annoyed That He Engrosses Rightfulness Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m curious what your boyfriendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;supportâ&#x20AC;? looks like, FATHER.
