ven in the age of technology, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be surprised at the number of handwritten and typed letters we receive (daily) from readers.

From prisoners who just want their story to be heard in a quest for appeal, to irate readers who want to comment on a recent story, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d say PW gets almost as much snail mail as we do electronically. Which is insane.

I try to read all that comes to my attention, although I gotta say there are a LOT of innocent people in prison, so sometimes those get read on delay. But I read one the other day that really disturbed me.

It was from a concerned parent at a South Philly-based Catholic school who claims that her childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school is actually teaching that slavery wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t all bad, because not all slave owners are horrible white people like movies, books and history would like to depict.

The writer claims that in this class, students read two narratives, one written from the perspective of a former slave and the other a widow of a slave owner. But it was the latter that this parent took issue with. In the letter, she writes: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The essay written from the slave owner perspective was about a widowed woman whose husband had owned the slaves of their plantation. Upon his death she became the owner and her narrative centered on how hard it was for her as a widow and how she needed her slaves for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;survival.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;...Furthermore the essay emphasized how â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;kindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; she was to her slaves. I was ďŹ&#x201A;oored!! I was beyond shocked this is what they were teaching my child.â&#x20AC;?

She added that in her mind this lesson does nothing more than â&#x20AC;&#x153;uphold white supremacy and plants the seeds of racism in the next generationâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;?

She claimed that the letter I received was also headed to ofďŹ cials at the school, the

Archdiocese, and that PW is just one of many media outlets across the city this â&#x20AC;&#x153;Very sorry white mother who shouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done moreâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sent the one-page explainer-rant-mea culpa too.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even need to get into explaining why justifying one of the most evil events in human history is shocking. This mom did it for me and adds that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a shock that has stuck with her for a few years as her child has since moved on from the school â&#x20AC;&#x201C; however, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not convinced that the school and that speciďŹ c teacher arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just regurgitating the same imprudent curriculum.

I agree with this parent. The minimization of an event where humans used to own other humans is not only bad curriculum, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s morally wrong. For any teacher to use a lesson plan aimed to show the bright side of slavery and have said lesson plan receive approval needs to seriously have their own morals â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and frankly job security â&#x20AC;&#x201C; examined.

However, this mother never left her name, a contact at the school or any other parents who may share in her same disdain for what her child was taught. While we have the name of the school, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a waste to follow as the school will direct the issue to the Archdiocese and the Archdiocese will deny or provide a lame statement about tolerance, inclusion and compassion for our fellow man.

Blah, blah, blah...

So if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to send a letter, help us help you. I encourage this mom to email us at mail@phillyweekly.com and give us additional info so we can actually stoke this ďŹ re in order to extinguish it. See, unfortunately without all the facts, this just becomes opinion on the basis of whether or not this claim is factual or even substantial. So if you read this and want something done, we need more and we hope to hear from you.

Perhaps at minimum however, know that your letter didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fall on blind eyes. I read it.

I also hope it makes for a reminder for all of us over the holiday dinner table to suspend the screens, bring shit back to analog status and ask our kids about what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re learning in school.

ayor Kenney and City Council President Darrell Clarke have promised to take ďŹ scal responsibility for the post-SRC school district. However, the government has yet to commit to a speciďŹ c funding model. To be sure, there are lots of valid concerns about the new boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to manage the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deďŹ cit â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not to mention navigating Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inglorious local politics. But for now, after 16 years in the SRCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vice-grip, education advocates are breathing a sigh of relief. Q

A BRIEF

HISTORY OF THE SRC 1998:

Act 46 is signed into law, giving the state authority to install the SRC in place of the local school board. This law also took away teachersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ability to strike.

2001:

The state takeover of the local school board becomes reality. The SRC is born.

2002:

The SRC votes to convert 45 public schools into privately managed charter schools. The public-to-charter conversions would continue under the SRC for years to come.

2007:

Arlene Ackerman takes over as superintendent of the Philadelphia School District.

2011:

O

n the three occasions Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve caught up with Osteria chef-owner Jeff Michaud he was dressed in all white.

Twice dressed in his familiar uniform as he oversees the kitchen at one of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most awardwinning dining establishments but it was only after the second time would I see Michaud in his other uniform a white Gi as I volunteered for the jiu-jitsu brown belt to show me what he does most mornings before he hits the kitchen at Osteria and on occasion, Vetriâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest eatery, Terrain in West Chester where Michaud also serves as a keen eye on the production of that kitchen.

Every occasion brought out a different side of the

chef that most donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to see, or see momentarily when he emerges from the kitchen to chat with patrons. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not your typical brash, abrasive chef shouting at sous chefs and cook in his kitchen â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not that he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t before as both he and his pastry chef Danielle Seipp will attest â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what he gets of our third meet that sets the tone for his day and allows for a much clearer head.

Because as he explained straight-faced, with an eerily calm voice that when he does get frustrated in the kitchen, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unfortunate for whomever his mat partner is the next day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I get to the gym and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m all frustrated or whatever, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just apply my chokes a little harder,â&#x20AC;? Michaud, 40, joked.

Except, after knowing him like I do now, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think he was joking.

Emerging from the darkness and into the light of a private wooden table in Osteriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kitchen was Michaud, hands clasped, giant smile from ear-to-ear. It was a face of genuine happiness as he overlooked at a full table of inďŹ&#x201A;uencers invited to try the fall menu, with fare inspired from the kitchen of Michaudâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Italian mother-in-law. It was in Italy where Michaud honed his craft, buying a round trip ticket and settling in the town of Bergamo, where he learned to cook authentic Italian meals inside the tiny kitchen of an intimate restaurant, overlooking the Alps.

An intriguing story that wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ended there Michaud would later tell the table that it was inside that restaurant heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d not only learn to cook wild boar or prepare Orecchiette but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d later meet Claudia, who was sitting inside Michaudâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tiny restaurant having dinner. Claudia, would later become his wife, an inheritance of not just a life partner, but a recipe book from the cucina of his mother-in-law.

All of this good fortune came at the expense Michaud would later tell me arrived at the risk of being deported as he arrived as a guest, with no work visa in 2003. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a visa at all, I just knew it was where I wanted to cook so I bought a round trip plane ticket,â&#x20AC;? Michaud laughed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I ended up throwing [the return ticket] out. I had the idea of one restaurant I wanted to start at and I had friends who lived there, so I stayed with them, worked in that kitchen for about 4-5 months and just like here everyone in the restaurant business gets to know everyone and from there things kind of fell into place.â&#x20AC;?

Michaud only had enough money to live in Italy for about a year, but would spend three learning how to craft the ďŹ nest dishes, growing a name for himself and falling in love with Bergamo, Northern Italy and Claudia.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not often you meet someone and realize you want to know their life story, but it was after that night, I knew I wanted to follow up with Michaud.

Deciding to go rounds with Michaud wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even my idea.

On a scheduled follow-up visit, where I planned to pick his brain about his personal life, did I discover through another Philly-based writer, Swabreen Bakr that Michaud is an

mixed martial arts aďŹ cionado. Bakr, there to interview Seipp, the 24-year-old pastry chef appointed by Michaud to oversee and create Osteriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s robust and delectable dessert menu, sized me up and stated: â&#x20AC;&#x153;You know Michaud is like real big into MMA right? You know what would make your story even better? If you tried it. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be down.â&#x20AC;?

So during a mix of discussing a return to Philadelphia, his passion to bring Bergamo to Philly, his family and where he spends his time when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s away from the kitchen did he bring up that his other passion is jiu-jitsu. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s certainly a passion as most mornings ďŹ nd Michaud, getting into his black Audi crossover, tumbler of coffee in hand making a 25-minute jaunt up to King of Prussia to train at Precision Jiu-Jitsu, with owner-operator and multidegree black belt, Rob Scheier.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a 25-minute trip up, but many times an hour (or more) back to the city as I-76, the eternal clogged artery of the Greater Philadelphia Region, always seems to back up right when Michaud looks to resume his day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is what it is, though. I use that time to prepare for the day and get relaxed,â&#x20AC;? Michaud said. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a rat race but when I leave that gym, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m so focused, man. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my drug.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how I stay even.â&#x20AC;?

And Claudiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thoughts on Michaudâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other obsession that generally ďŹ nds him out of the house by 5am most mornings, leaving her to care for their 6-year-old daughter, Gaia? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s given up, man,â&#x20AC;? Michaud joked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At ďŹ rst, yeah she was not too pleased and I get it, but she sees how important it his for me and sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really supportive. She knows I appreciate the time and I always pay it forward, plus Gaia does it too, so sometimes when she does have school, she comes with me.

It was then and there I realized that if a 6-year-old, who Michaud says has been watching him train since she was in an infant seat on the mat in the gym can do it, then Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ask. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve tried jiu-jitsu in the past, but due to life, I never could commit. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a dedication, the ďŹ rst thing Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d learn when Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d later throw on a white Gi and try it out with Michaud. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hey, do you think I could come up to the gym sometime and watch you train? I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d make for a really good story.â&#x20AC;?

Michaud once again looked at me stone faced with a slight smile calmly said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you come try it out?â&#x20AC;?

Even better.

THE THIRD TIME. It started off where I thought I was in charge. Then the grip got tighter.

Then I had no control of my arm because it was in between his legs, his ankles serpentined around my head.

Time from start to ďŹ nish: 21 seconds.

It was the armbar submission Michaud leveled me in, one of a handful of submissions I became a crash test dummy on. Like a proud parent, Scheier looked on as time after time,

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d put up a ďŹ ght, tire and Michaud, calm and collected would close things out. Scheier is the perfect instructor, teacher and friend to Michaud. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been in the MMA game since UFC 1 and has been in the corner for some of the ďŹ ght gameâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most lethal ďŹ ghters.

But on this day, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t chat former glory but the duo wanted to chat how jiu-jitsu offers an outlet, an escape. Even though I unfortunately was unable to ďŹ nd many in my goes with Michaud.

For Michaud, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s this AM session that sets the tone for the entire day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In here, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all problem solving, right?â&#x20AC;? adds Michaud. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re constantly put in situations where you have to ďŹ nd the solution. Here itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about being relaxed, calm as I try to overcome these issues. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what I take and put into my work in the kitchen, because like here itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very dynamic, problems are constantly changing so I see [jiu-jitsu] really as the solution to how I should approach most situations.â&#x20AC;?

On this day, with both of us clad in white, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think I offered much for Michaud to to problem solve. However, he and Scheier both noted that I ďŹ ght with â&#x20AC;&#x153;a lot of aggression,â&#x20AC;? so I guess thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something.

But in the case of his MMA chef? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can tell heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dedicated, you can see

that for him this is a passion,â&#x20AC;? said Scheier. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most guys sit around and wait for me to tell them what to do next, but this guy is trying out new moves and wanting to get in early to perfect moves. Some people would say itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an obsession, but where they see obsession, I see dedication. The same thing applies in the

kitchen, right? Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re constantly trying out new things, new spices, new dishes and you want to get it right, so you work on it. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a noble thing and I really respect him for being that type of person.â&#x20AC;? Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

t started with a series of questions.

In the ďŹ rst chapter of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Learning to be Hungry: Holdinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on Together,â&#x20AC;? author Ntozake Shange wondered: â&#x20AC;&#x153;What sated the appetites of slaves no longer slaves, Africans now Haitians, ordinary men made mystical by wont of their taste for freedom? How do we consecrate newfound liberty?...I need to know how we celebrate our victories, our

very survival. What did we want for dinner?â&#x20AC;?

It was these wonderings that launched and has sustained the mission of the PHL Assembled Kitchen project. The food-based project, an extension of the Philadelphia Museum of Art â&#x20AC;&#x153;PHL Assembledâ&#x20AC;? initiative, developed rotating menus since the beginning of September, presenting dishes around three key themes: Survival, Resistance and Victory.

Until Dec. 7, patrons of the Philadelphia Museum of Art can get a taste of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Victoryâ&#x20AC;? menu in the cafe of the Perelman Building.

The project offers recipes and dishes that have been curated and prepared by a group of 12 culinary artists, cooks and storytellers. While planning menus, the artists wanted to make sure museum patrons could understand that this wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just a dining experience but also part of the PHL Assembled art project. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also very personal for each artist as the dishes reďŹ&#x201A;ect personal stories and histories.

Three of the women involved in the project spoke with PW on the meaning and inspiration behind their dishes.

Catzie Vilayphonh is a multimedia artist; khaliah d. pitts is a writer and food educator; and Nia Danielle Minard is a curious cook who left her 9-to-5 to pursue her culinary dreams.

In the case of Vilayphonh, born in a refugee camp, she was immediately drawn to the theme of Survival. The dish she chose to showcase in this project is called, â&#x20AC;&#x153;mieng,â&#x20AC;? a sticky rice ďŹ lled lettuce wrap, a very traditional dish thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not even routinely served in Laotian restaurants. Vilayphonh explained that the process of making it exempliďŹ es survival as the rice goes through many stages and transformations before reaching its ďŹ nal form as â&#x20AC;&#x153;mieng.â&#x20AC;?

The ďŹ lling is made from pre-cooked rice that is then dried and fried, after it is mixed

with a broth to make a savory spread. For Laotians this snack is a way for them to preserve rice, and prevent food waste, as sticky rice doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t carry a long shelf life. When she was the featured artist of the week, Vilayphonh did a live presentation of the dish to show all the different stages that the rice goes through before ending up as the savory sticky rice dish on the menu.

The meals are prepared offsite by the prep staff and served on premise by the operation staff of the museum. The prep staff arrives Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and prepare meals for about 120 people. The cafe not only feeds museum patrons but also most of the museum staff. This type of service, where warm, fresh food prepared with intention in a communal workplace setting isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t something you see often in Western working culture.

Each artist taught the operating kitchen staff how to properly recreate their dish, which ended up being an interesting culture exchange and learning experience. Sourcing ingredients in bulk was at times tricky given seasonality and perishability. Minard recalls visiting as many ďŹ shmongers in Chinatown as she could, to ďŹ nd the best ďŹ sh; shopping for the ingredients for Vilayphonhâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sticky rice dish, having to go hunting in tiny Laotian markets and having the business owners show her their own versions of the dish. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To me, just even the humbleness of going into this part of town that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d never really been into, and to be accepted and well received, the patience of folks when I had my lists, and to be connected and working it out...I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know any other way to describe it,â&#x20AC;? said Vilayphonh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be invited into their homes to talk about how people come together over food, it was just magic really, it was just food magic.â&#x20AC;?

Also contributing to the Survival menu, was pitts. She made turmeric grits over wilted greens, a recipe inspired by her memory of enjoying grits with her family every Sunday morning, and from a modiďŹ ed recipe that she crafted herself while fasting for Ramadan. pitts remarks, â&#x20AC;&#x153;You cannot be victorious or survive unless you resist in some way.â&#x20AC;?

Regarding selecting their dishes, Minard added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nightmare to just pick one as someone who eats everything! To me survival, resistance and victory, are themes that are salient across food. One of the things that I picked that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it on the menu was a black-eyed pea fritter.â&#x20AC;?

One of the caveats in creating the menus was that they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t prepare anything fried. Black-eyed peas are considered symbols of luck, blessings, survival and hope, so for Minard the idea was that you gotta eat your good luck at the end of the year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as is tradition in the Mississippi Delta region where she grew up. Black-eyed peas did end up on the Survival menu in â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Peasâ&#x20AC;? which was prepared by fellow artist Shivon Love.

How did this come to be? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know that Mexicans came to pick cotton after the Civil War, and I think that conďŹ&#x201A;uence of culture, just being able to bring something portable, because most folks brought leftovers from breakfast, people were working together and living together and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re sharing food,â&#x20AC;?

added Minard. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our tamales are wetter and more savory, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really like street food, and they can be like super duper spicy, and traditionally made with pork. I chose it because this is [a substantial] piece of Southern culture thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quirky and people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know about.â&#x20AC;?

Although food is the focus, this menu is an art project and the space in which it is served was also designed with intention. Curated by Shanti Mayers (owner of The Sable Collective boutique), the usually sterile cafe area was repainted with the warm branded colors of the Assembled project, shelves were lined with artifactsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;records, art, family heirlooms, kitchen artifactsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;donated by each artist.

A quote from NShange adorns a terracotta red wall; and custom music playlists were created for ambience. Even the ceramics that house sauces on tables were custom made for the space and are symbolic of the three themes with imagery of plants, seeds and blooming ďŹ&#x201A;owers. Communal tables were also designed and replaced the usual furniture of the cafe.

The overall goal? Make the

space feel like home while fostering discussion. Trust, there is much to talk about once you get through the PHL Assembled exhibit and sit down to have a meal. The museum hopes that projects and exhibits like this encourages more people to come and explore the Perelman Building.

These menus give Philadelphians the opportunity to try cuisines from around the world and the African diaspora in one sitting, to taste how these dishes riff off and compliment each other in unexpected ways, as well as to experience and learn about how food traveled across the world, what staples and seeds came with those who were transported by force and planted in the New World.

In an era where weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re constantly in a rush itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not often that we take a breath before a meal, and use all our ďŹ ve senses to take it in; these meals give you an opportunity to be thoughtful about what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re eating while also remarking on what different cultures eat in times of strife and joy. On the inspiration for his murals all over the world, mural artist eL Seed says it comes from the location and is rarely planned out.

tribute to Aliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work, students with Al-Bustan will ensure her work lives on, with plans to set up her installation in January via virtual communication with the artist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open to people of all backgrounds, not just Arab communities. We very much encourage and want to have a cross-cultural exchange,â&#x20AC;&#x153; said Hazami Sayed, executive director and founder of Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture. Sayed as well as Seed afďŹ rm their work is neither political nor religious, but rather cultural and social.

Seed colors the walls predominantly with magenta, a color contrast to the sparse and litter-ridden greenery below. As is his signature touch, the mural is complete with swirls of stylized Arabic calligraphy. In English the words reďŹ&#x201A;ect a famous W.E.B. DuBois quote from 1920: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe that all men, black and brown and white, are brothers, varying through time and opportunity, in form and gift and feature, but differing in no essential particular, and alike in soul and the possibility of inďŹ nite development.â&#x20AC;?

The line is from DuBoisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil.â&#x20AC;? One of DuBoisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; renowned works is â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Philadelphia Negro,â&#x20AC;? an 1899 sociological study of the African-American community in Philadelphia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The quote is about bringing people together, not causing conďŹ&#x201A;ict. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m trying to do with my work,â&#x20AC;? explained Seed, who noted that this piece follows a recently ďŹ nished piece on the border of North and South Korea. The artist, who has created masterpieces around the world, does not sketch

Renowned Arab mural artist eL Seed creates latest gem in Philadelphia urging for peace

igh atop a boom lift in West Philadelphia, the theme song for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fresh Prince of Bel-Airâ&#x20AC;? can be heard from 40th at Preston and Market streets. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In West Philadelphia, born and raised...â&#x20AC;?

On the lift is world renowned international artist eL Seed, who hails from nowhere near the wall he stands in front of.

But the French-Tunisian artist who currently resides in Dubai was commissioned by AlBustan Seeds of Culture to host his art as part of the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 18-month-long (DIS) PLACED: Philadelphia initiative. The West Philly based Al-Bustan organization does so much more than promote Arab culture and

arts, but over ďŹ ve days earlier this month it was the focus as Seed and a team of assistants have worked from morning until night, painting on two adjacent University City walls. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is not about the wall, it is about the experience,â&#x20AC;? said Seed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking for the unique experience, the unique emotion, the emotion that I am feeling here in Philadelphia that I would never feel somewhere else.â&#x20AC;?

The work of eL Seed, is just one part of (DIS)PLACED: Philadelphia. In total, AlBustan commissioned four artists of Arab heritage, including a poet, cellist, and another artist, to create projects around the subject of displacement in Philly. One of the artists, Buthayna Ali, was unable to leave Damascus to come to the United States as a result of President Donald Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s travel ban. In

out his designs. His artistic process is about letting the space and community inspire his work â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on the spot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know I was going to do this [quote] until I was here,â&#x20AC;? said Seed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like the human message in it. There is a universal call for peace in it. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what I like about this quote, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a togetherness quote,â&#x20AC;? afďŹ rmed Seed who is proudest of his extensive art piece in Manshiyat Naser, better known as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;garbage cityâ&#x20AC;? in Egyptâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital city of Cairo. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[DuBois] talks about brotherhood between everybody, between black and white, and everyone.â&#x20AC;?

Seed has a three-fold plan for his work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You ďŹ rst look at it as an abstract piece, then you think well what does it say, and then why is this here,â&#x20AC;? said the artist. Through this active viewership, Seed hopes the piece ignites â&#x20AC;&#x153;dialogue,â&#x20AC;? but more importantly, â&#x20AC;&#x153;connections.â&#x20AC;?

According to Jane Golden, the executive director of Mural Arts Philadelphia, while local artists make up 90 percent of the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 4,000 commissioned murals, an international artist can â&#x20AC;&#x153;stretchâ&#x20AC;? locals to think globally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This project on displacement is important and timely as gentriďŹ cation is a topic that we are talking about now, because it is happening in so many communities,â&#x20AC;? afďŹ rmed Golden. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How do we work with communities, and tap into the resilience thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s there. So people can put a stake in the ground and say that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;this is my home, this is my community.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

But it seems as though Philly already has its stakes ďŹ rmly in the ground. Before putting spray paint to brick, Seed did research about Philly, toured the city, and spoke with people of the community. Unlike other places Seed

has worked, the artist said that Philly is very protective of its local scene. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel like Philadelphia is such a complex city. There is a struggle that I have not felt anywhere else,â&#x20AC;? said Seed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were super concerned with the mural, and what it would represent, if it was going to represent them, and be relevant to them. I think thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a sense of belonging, a sense of ownership, because they have a sense of ownership of the space, and they still want to own the place.â&#x20AC;?

Considering the piece is about the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s problem with displacement and gentriďŹ cation â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it did raise concerns that the artist was not a local. But Sayed argued that the pairing will create more empathy and understanding. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Having that comparative basis just opens up doors for all kinds of possibilities. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what this will spark, but for us as an organization [who works in West Philly] we want this mural to be a way to build relationships with the community,â&#x20AC;? said Sayed.

Seed is no stranger to displacement. His art is infused with his experiences of identity crisis. Caught between his French and Arab identity, Seed learned an informal style of Arabic calligraphy later in life, a skill he implements through quotes from religion, poetry, and prose into his street art. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Displacement is something that was part of my life, not in Philadelphia, more than France. I think this is a global issue, but dealt with locally,â&#x20AC;? challenged Seed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I come back to my neighborhood, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t recognize anything. Black Friday blues Philly retail workers from national chains are speaking out against crazy scheduling this holiday season

or most of the year, David Delgado doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get steady hours as a sales associate at Old Navy near Rittenhouse Square. The 20-year-old North Philly resident has to hold down another job as a temp security guard to scrape by, and overall, when he requests to be given at least 32 hours a week, his experience has been negative.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll badmouth you, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ignore you, and when they do actually feel like giving you the hours, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll give you hell [for it]â&#x20AC;? Delgado says.

But come Thanksgiving Day, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expected that all hands are on deck. Old Navy is among a dozen or so retailers opening their doors in the mid- to late-afternoon to prepare for the Black Friday rush.

Some retail workers see incentives for working on days like Thanksgiving, like time

and half pay. But despite being part of the holiday weekend, companies like Old Navy donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t consider Black Friday a holiday, Delgado says, and the hours are â&#x20AC;&#x153;crazy.â&#x20AC;? (A representative for the apparel company did not return calls by press time.)

According to a report by the nonpartisan Economic Policy Institute, about 17 percent of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s labor force works under the strain of inconsistent scheduling, week in and week out. And the holiday season spells an even more stressful workload for part-time corporate employees like Delgado.

While local data for Philadelphia were not available, retail workersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; stories of this holiday time madness and exploitative labor practices are a dime a dozen. Wal-Mart, the single largest employer in Pennsylvania, has one of the least sterling reputations in this department. But employees interviewed by PW say that the ďŹ&#x201A;uctuating hours and unsteady paychecks are the biggest problem.

Seasonal workers, which large retailers bring on in droves to help ease the holiday workload, make scheduling all the more unpredictable.

Madison Nardy, a full-time student at the Community College of Philadelphia who supports her disabled mother, works part-time at Target. The South Philadelphia native says the MifďŹ&#x201A;in Street branch near the waterfront has hired 50 new seasonal workers since September.

Now, she says that she will have to ďŹ ght for her guaranteed 20 hours per week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ridiculous,â&#x20AC;? Nardy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They should give the current employees the hours we need before they hire seasonal.â&#x20AC;?

Nardy acknowledges that Target is one of the more well-reputed retailers. But thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still work to be done to improve conditions.

Earlier this month, the Minneapolis-based big box store announced that it would close its doors for six hours on Black Friday. In previous years, it has followed the sad all-nighter tradition between Thanksgiving and Black Friday. (Target has also topped numerous lists as the highest paying retailer in the country. The corporation recently agreed to implement a $15 minimum wage by 2020. But Nardy worries that the wage increase will bring more cuts in each employeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hours.)

But Nardy says itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still a grind. Some Target workers in Philly will ďŹ nish a shift at midnight on Thanksgiving, commute home, and then return for the opening shift in a few hours. Like many companies, Target is also extending its daily hours until midnight through the end of December.

Nationwide, some 75 popular retail stores will be closed on Thanksgiving. A number of these stores â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Best Buy, Cabelaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, JCPenney, Target and Wal-Mart â&#x20AC;&#x201D; will be open for at least part of the day. Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

A PHILLY ETYMOLOGY The phrase â&#x20AC;&#x153;Black Friday,â&#x20AC;? originally used to describe a late-19th century gold market crash, was reappropriated by Philadelphia newspapers a century later to refer to the post-Thanksgiving retail rush. As early as 1959, according to archived news reports, Philly police officers began using the two-word phrase to describe the horrible traffic conditions around the once-booming retail outlets in Center City.

Public Players Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a twentysomething straight woman.

About a month ago, I had a really vivid dream in which I was at a party and engaging with a guy I had just met. We were seriously ďŹ&#x201A;irting. Then my ďŹ ancĂŠ showed upâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;my real, ďŹ&#x201A;esh-and-blood, sleeping-next-to-me ďŹ ancĂŠâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; who weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll call G. In the dream, I proceeded to shower G with attention and PDA; I was all over him in a way we typically arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t in public. I was clearly doing it to get a reaction from the guy Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d just spent the last dream-hour seducing. It was as if it had been my plan all along.

Last night, I had a similar dream. This time, the guy was an old high-school boyfriend, but otherwise it was the same: ďŹ&#x201A;irty baiting, followed by the use of G to reject and humiliate the other guy. I was really turned on by these dreams. In real life, whenever another woman has ďŹ&#x201A;irted with G, I get arousedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;conscious of some feelings of jealousy but drawing pleasure from them. And when other men have ďŹ&#x201A;irted with me, I get similarly aroused for G. There is deďŹ nitely a component in that arousal that wants to tease and mock these other men with what they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have, even though the teasing is just in my head.

I would NEVER use another person like I do in these dreams/fantasies, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cruel.

But could this become a healthy role-playing outlet for me and G? Are there ethical implications to hurting strangers (albeit imaginary ones) for sexual pleasure? From what little I know of degradation/humiliation kinks, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important that the person being degraded is experiencing pleasure and satisfaction. Is it healthy to make someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (again, an imaginary someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s) unwilling pain a part of our pleasure? If G is into it, this would be our ďŹ rst foray into fantasy/role-playing/whatever. But I worry that I might be poisoning the well by pursuing something so mean-spirited. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; My Extra-Arousing Meanness We watch imaginary people being harmedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;much more grievously harmedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;in movies and on television and read about imaginary people being harmed in novels.
