rePeatedly reVised Flowers, warm temps and sunny days are becoming more frequent with the season change and I couldn’t be happier. I love feeling the sunshine on my skin and the time of day when the temperature has increased and I can peel off my light sweater to uncover my short-sleeved top. With the change in the weather my clan is gearing up to launch the boat into the lake, dust off our fishing rods, break out the camping gear and enjoy the great outdoors? What’s your spring and summer plans? Maybe you intend to travel—vacation on the beach or hit up a new hot spot? Perhaps you are itching to get those green thumbs in the dirt for your vegetables and flowers. What about those home improvement or honey-do lists? The warm weather is perfect for tackling those landscaping projects! And we must not forget, the joys of summer breezes drying the laundry and the windows open bringing fresh air into our homes. No matter what we choose to do during this change of season, let’s remember to look for new ways to encourage, empower and inspire other women in our paths. Yes, we have a list of things to do and enjoy, but what makes life rich and warm is our attention to the heart of another. Take time to notice those around you and offer a smile, a kind word, a sincere compliment… all of which would bring a warmth like the summer sun to a woman’s day! Can you imagine what our days would be like if we all became more aware of those around us? I propose we choose to slow down a bit, open our eyes and our hearts to pour into others.

Flea Market Finds

Bargains are springing up!! Courtesy of The Antiques Diva & Co (http://antiquesdiva.com)

F

lea marketing is a European past-time that locals and tourists indulge in alike. At The Antiques Diva & Co we are constantly tak-

ing clients to flea markets in all of our 8 tour countries, which means we see a lot of inventory! Flea markets can be overwhelming, but if you know what to look for – and what to do with those things you find – bargains can abound. Today I want to share with you some of my favorite ways you can repurpose items found at the flea market. Hmmm… now that I think about it, I should have titled this blog“Flea Market Finds and How They Get Their Groove Back”. 1. I think one of the biggest bargains at a flea market is on lighting. Whether you’re buying traditional crystal laden chandeliers, funky vintage fixtures from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s or table top lamps, prices at the puce in Paris can be up to 10x cheaper than in a retail shop. But you don’t just have to buy ready-made lamps – the flea market is a virtual lamp supply store for people with an eye for repurposing. All you need to do is go to your local hardware store, pick up a lamp kit and then scan the market for something you can use for a base. It needs to be sturdy enough to stand on its own after you add the lamp apparatus and shade on top. Bottles and vases make obvious choices, but think outside the box. You can make a lamp base out of anything: a stack of antique books, an old type writer, a vintage camera, a teapot, a stack of mixing bowls or even stacked pasta strainers. Any old bucket will do. What about a tripod or a mannequin, statues or even old dolls? Ideas for repurposed lighting are endless. And we haven’t even started talking about what you could do with the shades! Rip the fabric off a lamp shade and string the frame with vintage crystal for a shabby chateau look. Drill holes through the end of vintage cutlery and string them on

6

a lamp frame to put in on a dining room lamp. Sconces are a breeze to make

from old plates or hand held mirrors. 2. Vintage scarves are not only chic but also cheap. And while they can update your wardrobe in a flash, they are positively perfect for home décor. Frame brightly colored scarves for instant artwork. Sew on backing – et voila – you’ve got throw pil-

lows. Patchwork scarves together for Bohemian draperies or for a no-sewsolution simply tie or drape a scarf across a window for a burst of color. Hint: if you’re a hopeless seamstress you can buy iron-on tape to use in lieu of a needle and threat. When shopping for scarves look for

quality. And while silk is always gorgeous don’t turn your nose up at a vintage rayon blend – this artificial fabric actually adds to their durability. The stiffer the scarf the easier it can be converted into purses and bags, slinky summer tops or even skirts. And the next time you need to give a gift, why buy wrapping paper when you can

wrap the present with – what else? – a vintage scarf!

3. You would never believe it – but the flea market is the perfect place to purchase presents. Forget going to a registry next time someone is getting married – go to the flea market and buy crystal wine glasses and a decanter. Add a bottle of wine and an antique cork screw and you’ve got a perfect present for honeymooners (or any oenophile for that matter). Put together a Mad Men basket for a university graduate – source martini shakers and vintage cocktail napkins, cocktail forks and little hors d’oeuvre plates. You can often find leather boxes or small

7

trunks – pack it all away and tie the box with an old tie to make your bow. Know someone having a baby? What about an antique

silver baby rattle? Buy antique linens and sew up gorgeous burp clothes. Tuck into the package a bottle of The Laundress All Purpose Bleach Alternative so the young mum can safely whiten, brighten and disinfect. Frame antique children’s clothes – bonnets, christening gowns and shoes to decorate a baby’s room. For the teenage girl, glue old jewelry onto a headband or a picture frame. Bridal magazines are filled with images of antique broaches being used in lieu of flowers in wedding floral arrangements. Keep

your eyes out for unique cutlery and serving platters – and stock up. Next time you’re invited to attend a party pull out a vintage platter and tell the hostess “Keep the Edwardian serving tray! I bought it just for you!” Go a step further and stock up on antique silver accessories and get them monogrammed with your hosts initials or seeking out silver already monogrammed with your friends initials!

4. Using architectural salvage in home renovations is all the rage at the moment – but even if you’re not doing a home renovation these items can be great used as decoration. The impromptu headboard is perhaps the most classic use for architectural salvage – doors, shutters, garden gates all make gorgeous backdrops. If you’re not handy find a good upholsterer and ask them to help you convert fireplace mantle into a padded headboard.

5. China and Porcelain are available by the car load at the markets. Whether buying one offs that you mix and match or entire sets, get out your hammer and start breaking these plates and saucers into teeny tiny bits and bobs. Voila – you have mosaic material. Now find something you want to mosaic. You can mosaic anything from the side table to a tea pot to a broken violin and create your own unique art (and get rid of a lot of pent up aggression). If a full-on craft project is more than

you bargained for, add magnets to the back – et voila – refrigerator art. Mix and match various patterns of plates and

saucers. Put the biggest plate on bottom, glue a wine glass to the center of the plate then stack another plate, creating your own multi-tier serving tray. Pretty floral chi-

na tea cup can be converted into clusters of tea cup hanging lights – wouldn’t that

United

be adorable in a little girl’s room for throwing tea parties? Or glue a tea cup to a garden stake and fill it with bird seed.

for the joy of

giving

Florals are Fun! By Kennedy Slavicek "Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” -Devils Wears Prada This quote is so funny, but also so true. No matter what year it is, when spring comes around, it’s florals florals florals! It may be the same pattern, but you can wear it in so many different ways! Whether it’s on pants, skirts, jackets, or blouses you can do whatever you want with it.

Another newer trend that I have been seeing is white on white. It looks classy and is super fun at the same time, so why not mix white on white and floral for an all new spring look!

Wear some white pants and a classic white button up, then take a floral blazer, jacket, or blouse and wear it over. And just to add some extra spice, grab a funky pair of pattered booties and a fedora and you’re ready for work or a casual dinner.

Wearing: American Eagle jeans | Garage button up | Jennifer Lopez blazer | Forever 21 hat | Target booties

A

woman’s closet can be filled with fashion wonder or greet here with horror as she looks through her clothing choices. However, for fashion-expert Kennedy Slavicek, wardrobes are full of unique expression and creativity! “Ever since I was young, I have always had a love for clothing and setting my own trends, but I would say I started to dress

out of the box or different from others in seventh grade,” says Kennedy. “My mom always dressed my brother and I in really nice and cute outfits from the time we were infants. Fashion inspires me because it is so influential, even when people don't realize it. I'm just amazed that the way I dress myself shows who I am without even speaking. I can chose how I want to be perceived, and I think that's pretty cool.” Currently attending college for fashion merchandising, Kennedy is also studying entrepreneurship and has recently launched an online clothing store (kennedynoellescloset.com) and blog (kennedynoelle.com) focusing on fashion. As trends fluctuate, depending on what’s hot and what’s not, Kennedy has some tips for making your clothes work no matter what the fashion magazines highlight:

Invest in staple pieces “A few staples can include a really good pair of jeans, a black blazer, and a well-tailored trench coat. They are pieces that everyone needs to have in their wardrobe,” Kennedy says. “They are versatile, classic, and you can wear them with so many different styles of outfits.”

Be a bargain shopper “As for cheap, I am a thrift store junkie. Spend a whole day searching for thrift stores, and spend an hour or so in each one. It takes time to find a piece that you like in a thrift store. My favorite thrift store is in Muncie, Ind., so if you ever find yourself there go to Attic Window. I once got an authentic Ralph Lauren dress for $6! It's a great place.”

Keep it classic Kennedy advises shoppers to choose classic silhouettes and avoid those patterns that are “too-loud.” These timeless choices never fail.

“I will never be a fan of the denim shorts with the pockets hanging out. For one, it makes the shorts look way too short (and sometimes they are),” Kennedy cautions. “The way the pockets lay is unflattering and I don’t think they look good no matter what top you choose.” She also warns against rhinestone. “Those shirts can make you seem less mature than you really are. Just remember to choose classic silhouettes and nothing too loud.”

Be true to you When it comes to style, what you like counts most. “Remember, your opinion is the only one that matters. If you try something on and you feel beautiful, confident, and you genuinely like the way you look, then buy it,” Kennedy says.

Colors count too When you know what colors look best on you, you can find different shades of those colors and wear them confidently. “I look good in blue, so I am always looking for different colors of blue shirts, pants, and dresses -- and I know never to buy red.” Magazines and other online resources are great when you want to catch up on new trends. Kennedy has a few she personally favs this season. “There are so many trends I'm loving this summer. For me, my favorite looks are the utilitarian style jumpsuits and denim-on-denim. I love both! Wearing a well-tailored jumpsuit with a great pair of shoes is fun and comfortable. Denim-on-denim is a different way to wear a casual outfit. They are both really fun and functional.” Her go-to outfit might surprise you – a great T-shirt and some shorts. “You will almost always see me in an old concert t-shirt, distressed shorts, some kind of hat, and my Converse. I am the most comfortable in this outfit and it always looks cute without looking like I'm trying too hard. I get compliments on my vintage concert tees. I will never stop wearing them.” In the future Kennedy hopes to own a vintage store. “I want to share my love of timeless pieces from years ago with people. I also plan on being extremely committed to my blog. I would absolutely love to be a representative for brands and stores. It's always been a dream of mine.” Kennedy labels herself as “just a small-town girl with big-city style," but don’t let her casual approach to fashion fool you. She is trendy, fun and flirty without putting her body on display. Her final piece of advice when hitting the racks: “Don't be afraid to ask for help from people at the stores and you can always ask me!” You can learn more about Kennedy by visiting her at her online clothing store, kennedynoellescloset.com and her blog, kennedynoelle.com .

Faith

For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this? Esther 4:14 Have you ever thought you were on a path, had a plan and direction, only to discover God had a totally different direction and new plan in mind? I know, silly question. Direction changes in life are natural. Sometimes they are planned, happy, changes, while other times direction change, not of our own making, can be stressful and make us fearful of the future.

I think I’m more accustom to direction change than most. I’ve moved across the country three times. Once while married with three children, once as a single Mother and once with just me and my dog. I’ve been employed in several very different fields and self employed for over 17 years with change galore in the insurance industry. Certain changes have given me the feeling of ad-

15

venture, while others have been a bit more challenging and stressful. I’ve been a writer for most of my adult life and even during my teenage years. I’ve always loved the written word. It’s one of many ways to express oneself. Words, when spoken or written well, have the ability to bring great joy to the reader. About four years ago, I felt the Lord calling me to begin sharing what I write with others. Until then, I was content to simply write my thoughts and keep them to myself. Very few people had seen anything I had written. The website, In His Embrace, was born out of that calling.

Though I have not had the time to write as often as I’d like, I have a plethora of notes and material to write myself silly should the opportunity present itself. Thankfully, God chose to give this girl a healthy dose of patience and ability to wait on His timing. His plan is always best regardless of the time involved.

Another new direction for yours truly… My husband and his childhood friend, Jeff, were song writers when they were in their late teens and early 20’s. They were quite good and very serious about it, even to the extent of recording many of their songs on cassette tape in hopes of selling them. But, as life happens, they both got busy as adults and lost sight of each other and their song writing ambitions.

Fast forward about 30 years Last Fall, my husband received a call from Jeff out of the blue. Other than the long catching up chats, you’d never know they had not seen or spoken to one another in such a long time. It’s been fun watching my husband relive old memories with his friend. It’s as if they’ve picked up where they left off in their early 20s. Love it! As they began the catching up process, talking about the old days of writing songs together, they started to get the writing bug again.

Enter God’s new direction for me A few months ago, my husband asked me to help him with a few lyrics on one of their new songs. This, my friends, is why I have been so spotty in writing for you. What started out as just helping with a line or two, has become a full scale song writing operation. These guys have kept me so busy with their writing

17

projects that I haven’t had much time for my own. Sigh. At first, I was a little resentful of the time my husband was expecting of me in helping with, and listening to, the songs. I can hear each new song in my sleep! I kid you not! During my prayer time one morning, I had to confess some misgivings I was experiencing. I was trying so hard not to disappoint my husband, or dash his hopes of really becoming a genuine song writer, but becoming a little resentful at the same time. After all, I had so many writing projects on hold already, how was I going to do more? One of the many lessons the Lord is teaching me, in this season of my life, is to stop expecting what He had me doing in the past is also what He wants of me in the future. But instead, to look at my experiences from the past as stepping stones to the future. In the book of Esther, Mordecai tells Esther that her position as Queen just may have been given to her “for such a time as this”. This is one of my favorite quotes from the bible. One never knows when their “such a time as this” moment will occur. Side note…. If you haven’t read the book of Esther, do yourself a favor and do so. I promise, you wont be sorry. Though I have not a clue what God is up to, I do know my obedience in following His lead is impera-

tive. It always is. If I truly believe His plan is always best, then second guessing Him is never a good idea.

Toni Ryan is a wife, mom, a Christian, and business woman with a heart to write and speak about the love of God. Insurance agent by day, speaker and writer by night, Toni has a deep connection to her faith and shares her writing online at In His Embrace

Was God preparing me as a writer all these years to also become a song writer? Only time will tell. But for now, He has given me a sense of peace about this new direction, which is why I’m sharing it with you. This song, Fight The Good Fight, is one of four we have had professionally recorded by studio musicians and vocalists in Nashville. All four are on Godtube.com. I hope you like it. I think it’s our best yet.

Faith

by Christie Browning I recently wrote in my journal... "I am so far beyond being stressed. I feel lost... without focus or a plan. I don't like that feeling. I feel like I'm suffocating and about to run out of air, but there's no room to breathe. I feel attacked on all fronts. I feel like someone has set off a stun bomb and I am left dazed, confused and blind. All the while, everything is being thrown at me, but I can't grab anything or respond fast enough to catch what's been thrown. I feel like I just have to stand here and take the beating." It's been a rough couple of months. Recently my father-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer and it's been a brutal downhill slide. That has been a weight on our family in ways I never anticipated. But...the "suffocating" comes from feeling like it's the cancer diagnosis coupled with major changes in my business, income shifts and changes, dealing with uncertainty, job stresses, financial pressures, and just "life" stuff. The last straw... my cellphone quit working and I didn't have insurance on it. YIKES! One of these on its own is doable...but all together, I feel crushed under the weight. Have you ever felt that way? Ever felt like you were loosing ground, out of options, no where to go? As I wrote the above statements in my journal, I felt God's promises start to flood my heart and mind. I began reading the story of Joshua. In the first chapter, we see God putting Joshua in a leadership role of epic proportions. Moses led the Israelite nation through some of its most miraculous circumstances... the plagues in Egypt, crossing the Red Sea and surviving four decades in the wilderness. Moses had died and God looked to Joshua to pick up and take over. Can you imagine the pressure, the stress? Talk about uncertainty! I think about being in Joshua's shoes. As a natural people pleaser, my first response would have been, "They won't like me/trust me/ follow

18

me like they did Moses." And then I would have ran through a mile-long list of "what ifs." But as I continued reading the chapter, and as I reflected on my own situation, I discovered three HUGE truths that put breathe back in my lungs. 1: God promises Joshua "you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them." God didn't give this colossal assignment to Joshua without having an end result in mind. That end result was more than amazing, and God promised to use Joshua to get it done. There was no wavering in God's choice or his decision to use Joshua.

2: God promises to be with Joshua wherever he goes. In verse 9, God tells Joshua...don't become overwhelmed or uncertain. I am with you wherever you go. That means God is sticking beside Joshua, not just physically being present no matter where Joshua goes, but that God is on his side, cheering him on, wanting to see Joshua blow the doors off this plan God has set in motion.

3: God gives Joshua the formula for his success (and ours) -- Meditate on the Word day and night. God said to Joshua, if he does this he will be able to do what is written in the Word, his ways and efforts will be prosperous and he will be able to deal wisely, make good decisions and have good success. So what does all this have to do with my "can't breathe" feeling? Well... for starters, going to the Word for understanding and peace is always the right move. But Joshua's story and the promises God gives him is spot on! God doesn't have a mediocre plan for us. He has a reason for creating us, a plan to see it through and it's all good! Just like Joshua who was told he would get the Israelites to the Promised Land, God is looking at you and I -- past our limitations, circumstances, situations and HE whole-heartedly has a plan for us to do something great for Him!! My situation is not ideal. Joshua's wasn't either. He was handed a whole nation and they were standing in the wilderness with a ginormous city and army to overtake in order to claim the land promised to them. But.... The same promise of God's presence no matter what is true for us. As we walk out our God-given plan and press forward to the end result, God is with us... He's for us, cheering us on, encouraging us, strengthening us. He didn't give Joshua the role of leader and then leave him to figure it all out on his own. In the same way, God has given us an assignment and He is there to work it out with us. Life may be tough, but God is tougher. Cancer might take my father-in-law and there might be a thousand ripples that shake us up a bit, but God PROMISES to be there through it all and....

I can make clear decisions, act accordingly and have good success... just like Joshua. The same formula works for me and it works for you! It starts with the Word. When I was feeling overwhelmed yesterday, taking time to open the Bible was the first part of the equation. Reading God's promises over-wrote the lies and fears I was buying into. The rest of my day, I went about praying for God's insight, his favor, his presence in all that I did. The results were much like Joshua's... no, I didn't get a promised land full of milk and honey... but I did get a free cellphone! More on that miracle later :) Editor’s note: Since the writing of this article, my cellphone has broke...again! Oh well, you gotta shrug your shoulders, smile and move on.
