One of my favorite jazz songs is a rendition of this Broadway classic, “Summertime.” The song goes on to describe fish jumping and fields full of tall cotton. When composed, this song was written to tell the story of the summer season through the eyes of slaves in the south. I’m sure ‘”easy” isn’t the word they would really use for the long, hot days spent in the cotton fields, and even now… in my climate-controlled lifestyle, I don’t think I’d choose “easy” to describe my summer.
For most of us, summer is busy — full of vacations, barbecues, camping trips, entertaining kids on school break, day-trips to the park or zoo, baseball games, holidays, family reunions, graduations, weddings and the list goes on and on. Yes, “easy” doesn’t describe my summer.
However, as the days grow longer, I am challenging myself to slow down just a bit and enjoy the site, sounds and smells that come with the season. I’ve already logged one camping trip for the season and I can’t wait for the next one. As hard as it may be to find time in my schedule to pitch the tent, camping rejuvenates me and gives me clarity. There’s just something about being surrounded by nature, God’s beauty and handiwork and being unplugged from technology.
So how can you make summer a bit more “easy?” Do you need to make room in your schedule to slow down and enjoy the season? Maybe you need to take a vacation from social media. Perhaps what your heart is longing for is to be fed something encouraging, empowering and inspirational.
Whatever you might need this season, be determined to make the most of the summer. Don’t let the months slip by without getting what you need most! With any luck, we can change the tide for summer from “busy” to “easy.”

A
patriotic windsock can be a fun kids craft idea that is perfect for summer. Our version uses up your fabric scraps so it is the perfect solution to the “bored” dilemma of summer. Grab a few supplies that you probably already have on hand and turn the kids loose to make their own patriotic windsock. It will make a great decoration on your front porch this summer!
Materials needed to make your own patriotic windsock: Material (cut into approx. 1 inch strips) (perfect for scrap material!) Ribbon (any you have on hand) Trim (any you have on hand) Yarn (any you have on hand) Basically ANY scraps that are in red, white, and blue Styrofoam disc (3 7/8” diameter) Serrated knife Mason jar lid or other round object Marker Glue Scissors Baker’s twine or some other twine to hang your creation
6
Step 1: Trace around mason jar lid or other round object in the center of the Styrofoam disc. PARENTS ONLY: Use serrated knife to cut out center of disc as shown below.
Step 2: Wrap 1 inch strips of material around cut disc. Use glue to adhere end. This is just to cover up the Styrofoam disc.
Step 3: Start tying on various material strips, ribbon, yarn, trim and more. Get creative and find items in red, white, and blue in your stash and scrap bin. Let the kids pick any materials that they like. Tie on the inside and drape material over to the outside to hide the knots. Trim any excess length with your scissors.
After you have all of the materials on the wind sock, use the baker’s twine to make a way to hang. Hang your patriotic windsock outdoors to allow the wind to blow around the various strips of fabric and trim. 7

It’s Father’s Day soon and my dad taught me a lot of lessons...including how to fish. When I was a kid, our family vacations weren’t glamorous trips to Disney or exotic sea-side trips to the coast. No, we spent time camping or at my grandparents house in Arkansas. No matter if we were spending time on the floor of a tent or on the floor of my grandmother’s living room, fishing always worked its way into the
equation. My dad taught me how to fish. He showed me how to spot the perfect spot to drop my worm and how to patiently wait for the fish to bite. Between my siblings and I, Dad probably spent hundreds of hours putting crickets and worms on hooks, detangling fishing lines and pulling tiny fish off hooks for us kids. It may not have been all fun and games for Dad, but it was a blast for us kids. Most of the time we spent fishing from the lakeshore or off piers, but one particular summer, I remember going out on Dad’s fishing boat at night. Earlier in the day, my dad had dropped baited lines to catch catfish, which meant at night he had to check the lines. Somehow I got the privilege to go out with Dad on that memorable night. Sitting in the boat, I watched Dad reach into the dark water searching for the lines which were marked by a bottle on the water’s surface. I was scared of what I imagined was lurking just below the water’s surface...a big fish or river monster poised and ready to drag us under. At age 10 or 11, I

90’s to Now By Kennedy Slavicek Lately, I have seen lots of trends from the 90’s start to come back. Some good, but there are definitely some bad. In this outfit we see the good trends from that decade that are now back in style: scrunchies, slip dresses, and platform shoes. Scrunchies are a fun way to make a ponytail or in my case, a half up hairstyle, cute and fun! Slip dresses are just amazing. They are comfy, cute, and SO versatile; I am very surprised that they even went out of style in the first place. Platforms are for someone who isn’t afraid of a little risk. But if they are worn right, they just add playfullness to any outfit. This trend is so easy to find and such a great way to pay homage to that time without looking out of place!

Get within three feet of Toni Ryan and you’ll realize there is something different about her. With an infectious smile and warm demeanor, Toni quickly makes everyone feel like a friend. If you are lucky enough to be drawn in by this sweet soul, you will soon learn the source of this “special-ness.” - her huge love of Jesus Christ. As a writer, Toni is on a mission to share her heart, faith and love for her Savior with others through an online presence, In His Embrace (www.inhisembrace.com). Recently, reVision magazine captured the passion this writer and speaker has for introducing others to Jesus. RM: How did you get started writing? Toni: "I started writing poems and thoughts when I was a young teen. I've always enjoyed reading either biographies or encouraging stories of many differing perspective's. Beth Moore is one of my favorite speakers and writers. Over the years of leading women's small group studies I've been told I need to write what I speak. That's when In His Embrace was born." "I feel led by God to share my thoughts with those He brings my way. He made it clear many years ago. If only one is helped in some way, I've done my job. Which is simply to follow His lead. It's terrifying at Toni Ryan is pictured speaking to a group of women at a recent event where she spoke on “The 5 Love Lantimes, but so rewarding when guages,” a favorite topic. someone says they needed to hear my message. I'm so honored and humbled that God would choose me for anything, let alone, writing and speaking to inspire." RM: Who do you like to write for? Toni: "I'd have to say those who call themselves 'Christian' and those not quite sure about this Jesus guy. Helping to lead people closer to the foot of the cross is what inspires me." RM: Tell us about your speaking experience and what you share most. Toni: "I've been a speaker sporadically for about 10 years in various church settings. Most recently I began being a featured speaker about once per month at a senior apartment complex for their Sunday evening Vespers meeting. It's a small gathering, but a joy to share my thoughts with some lovely people. They keep asking me back so I must be doing something right."
12
"One of my favorite topics to speak on is 'Love Languages.' If people knew and intentionally loved others according to their love language need, marriages and families would thrive far more than they do. It's a thrill to hear someone tell me how much learning about their mate or child's love language helped them." RM: What do you think is the biggest misconception people have when it comes their faith? Toni: "Oh goodness, there are many. First is seeing God as a magic genie just waiting to hear their three wishes. Then when those wishes do not come true it's all His fault and He's just a worthless myth. Secondly, believing that being a Christian is a boring, fun-less, existence. Nothing could be further from the truth! My walk with the Lord has been amazingly beautiful and full of more fun than a girl should be allowed to have. Third, thinking that God expects perfection from us. I just gave a talk last week about the difference in the perfection people expect and think God expects verses the excellence He asks us to strive for. Perfection is never attainable, but excellence, when strived for intentionally to please God and others, is. And, it's hugely rewarding." RM: How do you find time to juggle a career and writing? Toni: "I'm thankful to be self employed. Since my boss likes me, I can make time (during slow periods) to write. I take a lot of notes when inspiration hits, then try to make the time to get the notes to make sense in a longer piece. Sometimes that takes a while, but it's worth it in the long run." RM: What obstacles do you have to overcome when it comes to writing and how do you do it? Toni: "I went through a slump where I didn't feel like writing for a while. I just wasn't sure if I had actually heard God the way I thought I had before. It took much prayer and talking with a couple of trusted friends to help me realize I was just discouraged because of having so little time due to job issues. Unfortunately I let that get in the way of even writing a little at a time. Now I am just taking it one project at a time as time permits." RM: What special slant or expertise to you bring to your writing? Toni: "I wasn't raised in a Christian home. I tell people I was raised a heathen and they laugh, but I actually was. The

Faith
the
of By Toni Ryan We practice many things in order to get better and better at them. We practice playing an instrument, exercise, cooking, knitting. painting and so much more. Our practice is intentional. We intentionally want to do, and be better at, something important to us.
As I tell Him how thankful I am for the good medical news of someone I love dearly, I can sense Him saying, “it’s all under control”. As I thank Him for watching over my son while he’s half a world away, I feel, not only His presence, but also, a sense of peace as He acknowledges my gratitude. I feel Him say, “I love them too.”
Of all the things I’d like to be better at, experiencing the peacefulness of the presence of God is at the top of my list.
My heart overflows
I’m reminded of my need for more time to experience the presence of God as I sit in our backyard this morning. I’m so thankful to be able to enjoy the beautiful nature God has provided.
The presence of the Holy Spirit is surrounding me. I can feel Him. It’s a feeling like none other. Why don’t I sit alone with Him more often? Why don’t I practice this type of loving solitude again and again?
As I tell God of my gratitude for all He has done, and continues to do, I sense Him wrapping his arms around me like a warm, soft blanket. As I thank Him for the simplicity of a song bird singing good morning, a woodpecker swooping in for breakfast, the soft cool breeze blowing through the leaves of the trees and the intermingling of sun and clouds, I can feel His presence.
15
I am convicted I need to make more time for abiding in the presence of my heavenly Father. “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not
see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you”. John 14:16-17 NASB We experience the presence of God in many ways; reading scripture, singing a song of praise, prayer in desperation for answers and hope, prayer in gratitude for help when help felt far away, gratitude for the beauty He has created and other ways too. Today, it’s simply sitting in silence while focusing on how much God loves us and how much I love Him too. He’s with us always. We need only, intentionally, be with Him. Father, Thank You for the reminder that no matter how busy life gets, You are always with us. Thank You for speaking love to us in so many wonderful ways. Please help me to make more time just for just us to spend alone together. I love You. Amen.

Studying Scripture By Christie Browning
Beauty found
in the Broken We've all been faced with difficult circumstances, hardships and trials. In those times, it's natural to ask "why?" And even more so, our second question, even if we didn't get an answer to the first is, "What do I do?" In the Bible, we can read of a story where circumstances were not ideal (Luke 9:12-17). The account of Jesus feeding 5,000 people with a few loaves and fish is nothing short of miraculous. Jesus was in a tough spot. He had been speaking to a group of about 5,000 men and now it was late in the day. The people were hungry. The first obstacle: Jesus needed food for these folks who had listened to him all day. Jesus' disciples come to him to make him aware the people are hungry... and there are no options for food nearby. The second obstacle - All that was available was a boy's lunch, comprised of five loaves of bread and two fish. How Jesus' chooses to handle this tough situation can give us a great example of how to encounter our own hardships or trials.
Denial comes first The disciples, those that were closest to Jesus, first wanted to dismiss the problem by sending the crowd home hungry. Isn't that how we choose to face our problems? Bury our heads in the sand. Or... better yet, keep so busy that we can't face the problem right before us.
Money isn't always the answer After trying to deny the problem, the disciples then try to throw money at it. Verse 13 says "we only have five loaves of bread and two fishes -- unless we go and buy food for all this crowd." How many times have we looked to our checkbook or credit cards to solve the problem or fix the circumstances? We naturally go into "fix-it" mode when problems or obstacles come up. And how many times do we think money is the answer... only to be left broke. But Jesus brings a new approach to the problem
Work with whatcha got Jesus takes the five loaves and two fishes. Here's this little boy who happens to offer his lunch and
Jesus graciously accepts it. He didn't look at it What are you lookin' at? and say, "No, thanks. It's not enough to make a difference." No, Jesus treasures the small lunch as Once Jesus embraced the fact that yes, he had if it was a five course meal. only this small lunch to work with, he looked up to Heaven. We discount the little we have to offer. Many times we don't value what God gives us even in the face of trouble and obstacles. We can't wait for the next exit. We look for the immediate relief. We want to run in the opposite direction, discarding the little we do have. However, when we stand in the midst of trouble, of hardships, that's when God wants to work miracles. That's when He is asking us to accept the little we see and trust Him to turn it into something we can't imagine. We already know that Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes, but he wouldn't have done that had he not accepted the lunch in the first place. Yes, there was a hurdle, an obstacle. But Jesus didn't gasp at the little he had to work with. He knew and trusted that God's power was bigger than the trial he faced. He knew God could use anything to show His glory... even five loaves and two fishes.
In Luke 9:12-17 we can read the full account of this miracle. In the NIV version, the scriptures say, "...and looking up to Heaven...." Jesus took time to look up. In the midst of our obstacles, our troubles, our bad days... do we look up? David writes in the book of Psalms... "I lift my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord." Over and over in the Old Testament we read through Psalms using this phrase-ology... "lift my eyes," "look up," "lift up your face." In our hardship, facing our obstacles, we need to take a page out of Jesus' book and ....look up to Heaven.
Attitude of gratitude As the story unfolds, we read that Jesus took time to give thanks. Look at the score here -- People 5,000 vs. Jesus - five loaves and two fish. To an onlooker, the odds were stacked against Jesus, but he still gave thanks even for the little he had to work with. Do we find an attitude of gratitude in the middle of our trials and tough spots? Do we offer up a prayer of thanksgiving? I know in my track record, my attitude is more like "woe is me" not 18
"Whoa! God!" We know the typical, Biblical responses... "Rejoice in the Lord always," "Count it all joy." But do we really embrace those sentiments? Wow, Jesus chose to do three remarkable things in the midst of his circumstances:
He took the five loaves and two fishes -even when it wasn't enough to take care of the problem, he accepted that which God provided.
He looked up to Heaven -- focusing
on Heaven, looking up to his Father, Jesus knew where his gaze needed to fall. He gave thanks -- Jesus kept an attitude of gratitude. What was seen was nothing compared to the faith that Jesus had for what God would do. After Jesus had given thanks, he "broke them." The NIV version of the Bible says that Jesus broke the bread and the fish... as if breaking the five loaves into 10 pieces would help, but that is exactly what he did... he "broke them." I find it interesting that the writer Luke chose to include these two little words, "broke them." It is rather significant because it wasn't until Jesus broke them that the five loaves and two fish multiplied enough to feed 5,000 men. It wasn't until that little lunch was broken that it became a feast... that too little became more than enough.
It wasn't until Jesus broke them that something miraculous happened. In our troubles, we are, no doubt, broken. Sometimes we are broken by the loving hand of God. But it is in our broken state God begins to use us. In our brokenness God multiplies our insignificant talents and too little offerings to do miraculous work. However, all too often, in the middle of our hardships, we want to run, hide and get away. We want anything but broken. Yet there is beauty in the broken....you'll see it next…
Satisfaction after brokenness In Luke 9:17, the writer says "they all ate and were satisfied." After brokenness comes satisfaction! Once the food was broken and multiplied and then used, the people were satisfied. If we would surrender ourselves to God and be willing to be broken and multiplied, we would find a divine satisfaction and joy. Being used, having purpose, becoming fulfilled is all available after being broken. First there's brokenness... then there's satisfaction.
Leftovers anyone? After the bulk of Jesus' miraculous work, Luke continues to depict the scene by saying "...and the disciples picked up 12 baskets of broken pieces that were left over." LEFT OVER!! From five loaves and two fish Jesus got leftovers! I like to say, "and then
some!" In our hardships, our obstacles, if we would learn to view these as a chance for God to come in, a chance for Him to break us, use us in a huge way, fulfill us and fill our purpose tank, we'll find that there are leftovers! God can take the littlest, tiniest offering we have to give and do a miracle ... deliver leftovers. He can turn it into an abundance, overflowing, more than enough... and then some. The key is to first take our circumstances for what they are, knowing God is still in control. Second we keep our eyes upward, looking and expecting God to be present. Then we stay in a worshipful manner, thanking Him for it all and for what we trust He will do. After that, we allow ourselves to be broken and used in a way God wants, so we can be multiplied for His purposes. All the time we know, this is a beautiful process because to the world it
might not make sense, but we know and trust that we are being filled up, satisfied and used even when it may seem like we have little to offer. In the hands of God, He creates leftovers. I love this example Jesus gives us. It is a beautiful display of surrender, trust and willingness. It teaches us to look at our circumstances, however meager or tragic, and knowing that God is a God of leftovers!
