Foreign delegations visit Calasanz to know their entrepreneurship model Two foreign delegations of teachers and experts in education visited our School by the hand of TKNIKA (Basque Government’s Centre for Vocational Training Innovation). A delegation from Namibia had the opportunity to put into practice the active methodologies applied to Tknika’s entrepreneurship programmes such as Urratsbat and Ikasenpresa. Precisely, San José de Calasanz is a model School in
the field of the practice of active methodologies in all academic levels. These African teachers had the chance to visit some of the projects which are carried out by students and the learning results achieved thanks to these methodologies. On the other hand, in November we were also visited by a delegation of international experts who are developing the INCUVET Project whose aim is to promote the role of Vocational
Training schools as entrepreneurships nests on a local and regional level. In this way they could know first-hand the school’s strategic projects regarding the development of enterprising competences. Experts from Estonia, Finland, Greece, Belgium and Italy coordinated by TKNIKA’s international team took part in the event. Further information about INCUVET Project: www.incuvet.eu/ es/
Ikasenpresa programme: 2 congresses and 16 students cooperatives As every year, Ikasenpresa, TKNIKA’s entrepreneurship training star programme (Centre of Innovation for Vocational Training) has started in our School. Five second year Higher Technician Courses are taking part in the programme setting up 16 student cooperatives. By means of Ikasenpresa Programme students are offered the necessary knowledge they need to set up and manage a Company as well

as the opportunity to put into actual practice and to develop a number of entrepreneurship competences which will be very useful for them if they set up a company or if they are employed. During this first quarter, almost 150 Calasanz students who are taking part in this programme, had to make up a team, assign roles and charges, choose and develop their business
idea, carry out or produce the chosen services or items and even start small business and marketing actions to sell them. We hope them to have the same good level and enthusiasm their mates showed in previous years, when excellent evaluations and awards were got. We encourage all of them to go on with their successful task and… let’s meet at the Charity Street Market.

Official event: Trainees, Erasmus students and Dual VT students received their diplomas As CONFEBASK usually does at this time of the year, last week they organized, together with schools and the Vocational Training Deputy Ministry, an official event in Euskalduna Palace of Congress were students received their 2014-2015 Training Courses Diplomas by local educational and labour authority. These certificates are given to a Calasanz’s students selection who trained in companies during last academic year and also to those students who trained in European companies by means of Erasmus programme as well as to the lucky
students who were hired by a company thanks to the increasingly important Dual Vocational Training System. It was a very emotional ceremony in the Euskalduna Palace Auditorium presided by over by Jorge Arévalo, the Vocational Training Deputy Ministry and by Confebask’s president and several education and labour authorities. Young V.T. graduates were encouraged to be proud of their educational option as an extraordinary investment towards a high-quality job. One of the height of the event occurred when Antxon Arza, a thrill seeker who, after a very serious accident
while he was filming the T.V. programme ‘Al filo de lo impossible’ (‘At the heart of what is impossible’), became a wheelchair user, told the audience his experience. This did not stop him to go on with his motivating business and sport projects and his talk: ‘If you are an enterprising person you can go on flying even if your wings are cut off’ passed his will to live and to fight against adversity on to the audience. He is a clear instance of fighting spirit, desire to improve and passion. At the end of the event he posed that happy for the photo with the school large group of students.

Javier Ruiz, to the Spain Chess Championship Javier Ruiz, a 4th year secondary school student of San José de Calasanz seized the long weekend we enjoyed in December to attend the Spain Chess Championship which was held in Benidorm from 5th to 8th December in the Gran Hotel de Bali in that Mediterranean town. They played in under the age of 16 teams and they played six rounds. Each chess game lasted one hour and thirty seconds. As always, our student set a very high standard. Thanks, Javi!
First year secondary students take interest in the world of opera Last week first year secondary students signed up for an educational programme given by ABAO-OLBE, organisation that came to our school and showed students, in a very friendly an nice environment, what an opera staging is like. the curtain too. On Friday 30th October we visited Euskalduna Palace of Congress and Concerts and there, we could see in situ all we were told in the talk when they visited us in our school. It is a wonderful place to see all these things closely. The last stage of the programme for our 4th year secondary students will consist in watching and enjoying an opera performance live.
Primary school students programme video games using Scratch This year we started with an innovative adventure with 2nd and 3rd year primary school students: to programme video games with Scratch. Together with Ayuda en Acción and Jóvenes Inventores from Deusto University we have started practicing with a programme developed by Google whose aim is to approach students to the world of programming with the help of a simple and intuitive programme called Scratch. So, the ultimate purpose of this wonderful initiative is to get students to programme a simple video game by means of easy commands and the aforementioned programme. Here we have the future programmers making their way in the computing world. Thank you Noemi! You are a very patient girl.

The school has increased its facilities with a new and modern building
The school has started the new academic year with a new building which is connected with the previous one and increases its facilities and services. By means of this extension the School gains more than 1,000 square metres distributed among four floors. Construction works began in June and ended in September and they have allowed for having new classrooms for pre-school, primary school and vocational training students as well as
creativity classrooms and offices. Other classrooms on the ground has also been modernised in order to be adapted to high-performance vocational training formative courses, Ethazi. Digital classrooms have been built. These new rooms are spacious, lit up and with some glass walls which promote connectivity and the necessary use of technological means in order to enable a new way of teaching and learning.
‘Intervention between blind-deaf people and the community’ academic training in our school. The Department of Training for the Employment in San José de Calasanz, in our commitment to the search of new employment niches, has bet on training professionals, ‘intermediaries between the blinddeaf people and the community’ in order to respond to the needs this collective may need. These problems are basically, mobility, access to academic training and, above all, communication.
Communication with the rest of the people and with their surroundings: how to know what is happening around them. The new professionals, therefore, would be the first graduates to fulfill the general competence of the aforesaid certificate, keeping in mind that, in the field of Community Service Professionalism Certificates, they have a rate of 90% insertion in the labour world.
Edmundo retired, His active labour life finished and from now on he will have spare time for himself and to take care of his granddaughter, to go for a walk with his wife along Serantes foothills and to meet his friends…and to visit old friends from the School. Students appreciated him because of his good deeds, kindness and discretion. And his colleagues will remember him for having made us life easier every day. He was our lifesaver in many occasions. Last month we said goodbye to him during a lively, moving and soulful dinner. We will miss you. And we welcome Raúl and Jose the new caretakers who joined us.

The Frutoteka in Calasanz On 26th November we enjoyed an innovative activity by the hand of “Asociación 5 al día” (‘5 a day Association’) who came from Madrid to promote fruit and vegetables consumption. Some kind of inflatable giant tent was set up in the fronton where images were projected. We could learn about fruit and vegetables and about how to take them every day in order to follow a healthy diet. It was amazing!
A business brainstorm arrives at DEMA from our classrooms ‘Pictogram Room’ ICT applied to Special Educational Needs. Primary School teachers recently could know about ‘Pictogram Room’, the computing programme which intends to work using magnified reality with children suffering from special educational needs and, in particular, with children with ASD (autism spectrum disorder). Magnified reality is a research field in ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Using a camera-projector system and by movement recognition we can reproduce in real time the child’s image together with graphical and musical elements which will assist his/her learning while he/she carries out some playful activities guided by an adult in such a way that if the child raises his/her arm, the pictogram will also raise it. In conclusion, to learn by playing!
More than 90 business ideas were submitted by our students in DEMA’s ENPRESARY initiative. 60 of them were selected to be defended before an Entrepreneurship Consultants selection board. It is the result of a task carried out by our students within the framework of their awareness about entrepreneurship
which we habitually perform in the School. Congratulations for that huge success! We are very proud of your effort. Now we have to wait. You are all winners for us. Throughout this week our students have gone to DEMA in Barakaldo to defend their business ideas with passion and illusion. Good luck!
Some Calasanz students speak at Nicolás Larburu vocational training school In December 2nd sophomores of Analysis and Quality Control Laboratory went to Nicolás Larburu high school in Barakaldo and there they

Pre-school children carry their learning projects out in contact with the real world In an effort to bring Santurtzi, our town, closer to our classrooms, our 3,4 and 5 year old pupils left school in different occasions to find information about the interdisciplinary projects we study in
our classrooms. Three year old children went window shopping; four year old children visited the Town –Hall to fetch a street map to find and study the street where each of them lives; and five year
old ones visited the local police station to know how municipal police work. We are going to show all we learnt to the rest of pupils in our monthly Meeting.
Our youngest pupils celebrate Halloween Once again this year, we enjoyed H a l l o w e e n celebrations. We had a morning full of great surprises and some ‘good’ scares too, of course.

San José de Calasanz participates in the 1st Week of Employment Promotion in Santurtzi Santurtzi City Council held during the first week of December the 1st Employment Promotion Week, an initiative that the municipality aims to stimulate and facilitate employment of people in Santurtzi who are currently unemployed. Conscious of the need that our town has of such initiatives to improve the competitiveness of our business, Behargintza has opted for promoting employment through this week of workshops, talks and spaces in which to share experiences first hand , with the collaboration of more than a dozen agents such as companies or entities. San José de Calasanz, as a V.T. school of reference in the town contributed to the activities that were planned there. The school had at its disposal its own space among the various institutions and companies which throughout the week provided useful information to the neighbours who were interested in getting a job or improving it. The stand with labour and academic information
was located in the ‘Casa Torre’ every morning of the week. In addition, to top it all, on Friday the school gave a talk about innovative entrepreneurship to people who were interested in new models of active entrepreneurship. The 1st Employment Promotion

World AIDS Day Last December 1st The World AIDS Day was celebrated and in San José de Calasanz we did not stay back. Analysis and Quality Control Laboratory students arranged a small awareness project with reminder messages and red ribbons. They also set a box where everybody could leave his/her anonymous questions and messages. Later, they put into practice their acquired knowledge and they solved all the doubts other students had. They also proposed that everyone come dressed in red to show their commitment to the fight against this major global problem. In addition, taking the advantage of a visit of a delegation of teachers from Namibia who were working with us in the school that very same day, they also took part in the awareness day and gave us their support because their country is one of the hardest hit by this disease.
OECD acknowledges San José de Calasanz worth The project was selected by OCDE as ‘A Good Practice of Innovative Entrepreneurship’. For this reason our school is one of the fifteen selected schools for the entrepreneurship promotion within OECD’s ‘Entrepreneurship 360’ programme which seeks to promote an entrepreneurial mind-set through education. Taking into account the size and speed of technological and organizational changes experienced in the business world over the last decade, San José de Calasanz worked on identifying key skills for adoption by the students through active learning methods. School is introducing their students in vocational training learning environments that promote not only
technical skills but also transversal and entrepreneurial skills that can increase options for these students later to create their own businesses. The methodological program used has required a great capacity for networking and active cooperation of various organizations. San José de Calasanz works with more than 400 companies and institutions such as TKNIKA, DEMA, INGURALDE, BEHARGINTZA, NOVIA SALCEDO FOUNDATION, Provincial Council of Biscay, The Basque Government, Santurtzi’s Town Council. All of our students participate in this programme; they are supervised by four teachers and they have conceived 150 business ideas and 20 companies.

The inclusion as an educational and professional commitment They are the first intellectually disabled people who will get a Lanbide official professional certification San José de Calasanz has given a further step in their educational innovation. In this case, it is not, as at other times, a bet for innovative methodologies, classrooms or learning technologies. This time the revolution is the group of recipients, under a nice project of social, educational and labour inclusion. In November a training course has just began in cooperation with the Down Syndrome Association and Lanbide. A group of intellectually disabled people will acquire in our school the social and professional
competence certificate: ’Auxiliary Operations for Administrative and General Services’. This training will last from November to June and will allow these young students to share rooms, experiences and activities with the rest of the students in a vocational training school. It is a very interesting and motivating pioneering experience as it is the first time that this group is trained in a vocational training school in order to achieve the technical skills of the course as well
as the transversal competences which are currently so demanded by companies. It will be a wonderful opportunity of showing that in our society there is room for everybody and in the labour field. The formative programme designed for this project covers administrative management, computing and communication systems knowledge. Then they will train in companies .We hope that this chance of getting a professional certificate allows them to have more employability opportunities.
Visit to the vocational training system in Estonia As a part of other educational systems watch and learning which is carried out in San José de Calasanz, every year our teachers take part in teacher delegations who visit foreign countries in order to know and learn good teaching practices and innovations. This is also an extraordinary chance to show everywhere Basque Vocational Training’s strengths and specially the good job made by San José de Calasanz’s teachers dealing with entrepreneurship support methodologies. Likewise, during the month of October, our teacher Luisa Pardo went to Estonia with a group of teachers who take part in Ikasenpresa, the entrepreneurship educational programme coordinated by TKNIKA (Centre for Investigation and Applied Innovation in Vocational Training). Over there, and for a whole week full of visits, conferences and different activities they had the opportunity to know the main features of Estonian entrepreneurship support models. It was a very productive visit, during which there was a very friendly working and learning environment, as it can be seen in the picture.
