Calasanz story-carnival Last February 24th, we had our San José de Calasanz school carnival and classic stories were the main characters in the celebration. Thanks to this we have more desire of reading every day. To work the stories in class, to pre-

pare the costumes, to dress up as the characters we like, to decorate the stage, to put the music and do a pretty dance ... all these have been incomparable experiences. In addition, at the end of every dance,

the applause of our schoolmates and families kindled the joy in our faces. As a help, families brought precious books that will travel with us throughout the school year. Thanks to you all with all our hearts.

Teresa Monge y Belén Mejuto en el auditorio del centro coruñés

San Jose de Calasanz gives training on Emotional Intelligence to a school in A Coruña Belén Mejuto and Tere Monge, coordinators of Primary and Secondary School, were the speakers of Calasanz who travelled to A Coruña to give a training course to more than 70 teachers of Fogar Santa Margarida School and to transmit the experience carried out in our school on “Emotional management, coexistence and assessment of transversal competences in the classrooms of

early, primary and secondary education” On a very intense Saturday, our colleagues presented methodological strategies for the management of coexistence in an educational center, especially in spaces such as playgrounds, canteens, aisles... and tools that can be used in the classroom for the development of emotional and social skills.

They also explained the procedure for the assessment of the transversal competences and their importance in the curriculum. This training day arose because the schools principals of this Galician school attended the conference that our school offered in the Congress of the CECE where they were impressed and wanted to know more in depth about our experience.

Teachers of Sant Josep de Calassanç from Tarrasa visit the school A group of teachers of Sant Josep de Calassanç school from Tarrasa visited our school because they were interested in knowing San José de Calasanz’s experience on emotional education and management of coexistence. For this reason we were visited by four teachers who shared with us a whole day in early and primary education classrooms where they could verify how we deal with the management of emotions and coexistence in our school. They could know tools of emotional control as the panel of feelings, the space to be with me, the place

where the children go to repair their emotional “wounds” and the tuning in or mindfulness that is practised in all the classrooms in the early morning, after the playtime and on having entered class in the afternoon. They could also see the functioning of the Txikimedias, the mediators who regulate and manage the coexistence among their school mates during the playtime, in the canteen, on entering and leaving school. On having finished the day, they transmitted their gratefulness and were very impressed for what they had seen.

Open classrooms in early childhood education This 2nd quarter of the year, the school leadership team has stimulated the project OPENED CLASSROOMS, which is an invitation to the families in order that they could share half a school day in the classrooms. The aim that they can know the daily activity of the classroom, what happens in that space that families

usually do not have access to. The experience has been carried out in the classrooms of 4 and 5-year-old children where families have been invited. The initiative has been very well received by families and 65% of 4 and 5- year-old children will visit us. They will have the opportunity, on March 30th, April 3rd and 6th,

to share the classroom with their children and to know how the daily routine of the classroom is, as well as the way of teaching and learning, the development of projects, the learning activities that are developed, sessions of psychomotricity, tuning, emotions management and leisure time, which is also a space to play and educate.

San Jose de Calasanz with the food bank One more year during the week from March 20th to March 24th we have taken part in the food collection for the Food bank of Biscay. Congratulations to all: students and families. We got twice as much as last year! The strength with which the green patrol explained it has paid off. Thanks to the high school volunteer students who every day helped to pick up the bags from the youngest students’ classrooms. This has certainly been a team effort! Thank you!

PROJECTS

Experiencing with nature

In the first cycle of early childhood education we are getting to know the world of plants. We are working with animals from different habitats and we are learning about their characteristics, way and places of life through a project. And not only that, we have also entered the world of plants.

Where do we buy food? On 3rd March three-year-old children have gone out to know our town. In the street we have found many elements: traffic lights, litter bins, lampposts, etc. But what we liked most are the stores. We have been able to see the fishmongers, the butchers, the greengrocers and the bakery and we have even been able to enter. We have brought from home photos of the foods that are sold in those stores and with them we have made our stores. Some coins and ... to play!!!... In this way we have also learnt numbers.

PROJECTS

In Santurtzi’s Town Hall We are working on a project about Santurtzi and because of it we have gone to the town hall to know how

they work there. We took the opportunity to clarify some doubts that had raised in class, too. And, with regard

to our project on Santurtzi, we paid a visit to the municipal police to find out how they work in our town.

San José de Calasanz celebrates its first Pet Show Students of 3rd grade of Primary worked very hard to organize a Pet Show this last term. Their families brought their pets into class for this Science Project. For a few afternoons, our class had a few more members such as dogs, hamsters, fishes, rabbits and even a falcon. Students talked about their pets, what they eat and what they can do. It was an amazing experience for our children. Dear families, thank you very much for helping us to make our kids’ learning so meaningful.

My green friend The students of 4th grade have been involved into a very interesting science project: Plants are our green friends. To put into practice everything we have learned we have planted lettuce, leeks and onions. After putting soil and seeds

in a milk tetra brick container we have been taking care of our green friends for the last month. We have also learned that our green friends do not grow up in the supermarket. Besides

VISITS AND TRIPS

Wonderful days at Arotz Enea The last week of January has been special for 1st and 2nd year secondary students because we were in Etxarri Larraun the Refuge of Navarre. We spent 4 days there and we carried out various activities. Besides having the opportunity to know nature and the environment we had an incomparable choice to enjoy in Basque. Arotz Enea is an environmental

8

education center. There, our students carried out various activities to raise awareness about the environment and its care. During 4 days they lived in Basque and carried out activities that included: pleasant outings to the nearby mountains, visits to the surrounding villages, pellet and ointments workshops, shadow-play. But what they liked most, without any doubt, was the disco party they had

at the last night. The party was incredibly successful and besides we had the chance to dance non-sexist songs. Relations among students were strengthened after spending that week together. In the evenings they also had a great time, although surely teachers will not think the same. The memory of Arotz Enea will always remain alive in our hearts.

4th grade secondary students present 5 business ideas to the entrepreneurship contest Egin eta Ekin

This year all 4th grade secondary students will participate in the Egin eta Ekin Project promoted by the Provincial Council of Biscay to promote the entrepreneurial culture among young people. Entrepreneurship is a hallmark of the school and has been included within the curriculum of the area of Economics in 4th year secondary school. This year 2017 we will participate with 5 innovative business ideas

ranging from the preparation of natural soap, a company devoted to help, a home for refugees built with recyclable material… Our school has already won the prizes to the ideas of business presented by secondary students in two occasions. Good luck one more year! In order to boost the entrepreneurial spirit, 4th grade secondary students were also invited on 22nd February to visit the facilities of the Peñascal

Cooperative, an example of creating a company with real social initiative. There they visited the facilities of the company, devoted, among other things, to the making of clothing, and then took a tour around their facilities. Previously they were informed about the origin of the initiative, about the problems that arose and how they got ahead thanks to a true entrepreneurial spirit.

The school signs a collaboration agreement with the City Council of Santurtzi The agreement between San Jose de Calasanz and the City Council will enable our students to put their knowledge into practice through the methodology called “Learning for Service”, an educational proposal through which students learn and, at the same time, offer a service to the community, in this case, to our municipality. The Learning and Service will allow the design and development of projects in different municipal areas that are related to the subjects and specialties that are taught in Calasanz such as Social Action and Equality, Tourism and Commerce of the City Council. As an example, soon our Vocational Training students of the higher degree of Administration and Fi-

Visit of the Consortium of Emotional Intelligence On March 1st, we had the privilege of receiving the visit of two leaders of the Consortium of Emotional Intelligence, a non-profit organization whose objective is the development of socio-emotional competences, in order to evaluate possible collaborations between the Consortium and San Jose de Calasanz. As it is well known, our school has for years favored the development of emotional competences among its students. As Aristotle said, “educating the mind without educating the heart, is not educating at all.” The result of this visit was the possibility of taking part in Radio Popular Herri Irratia where Noemí Fernández, teacher of the Higher Level Training Cycle of Social Integration and of the Intermediate Level Training Cycle of Attention to People in Situation of Dependency, presented

how the Emotional Intelligence is implemented in the classrooms of Vocational Training of the school. San José de Calasanz also participated in the TEC Conference (Emotion and Cooperation Technologies)

in a session held in our school with the title of “Do we bear in mind emotions in learning?” where the emotional education developed in the school, from childhood education, to vocational training was explained.

Calasanz gives a presentation at the center Lea Artibai of the Mondragón group Last Thursday, Rafa Balparda, the school’s counselor, gave a presentation at Lea Artibai on the transformation of Education to a large group of teachers and educational technicians from the area of Lea Artibai. It was an excellent opportunity to share experiences and mutual learning. A real pleasure.

ADMINISTRATION AND MARKETING STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN GAZTEUP Marketing and Administration of 1st grade students participated in the GazteUp day of promotion of the employment arranged by the University of Deusto. Throughout the morning our students had the opportunity to meet in person the new jobs that will be offered in the coming years and the type of professional profile that companies will value for their selection. In the event various entrepreneurs showed their projects and shared with the audience the main difficulties they had to overcome and how, with passion, talent and motivation, they have succeeded in getting ahead. The students were especially interested in the talk of the blogger Inge Sáez that shared with the attendees all the secrets to find a job in the social network LinkedIn. It was a luxury for these young people who will soon be looking for a job. It was a day of strategic importance for young people and the Basque Government’s Employment

“Aim: talent” finalist in IREKIN, good practices in V.T. (vocational training) of TKNIKA The assessment methodology based on transversal competences is a hallmark in Calasanz. One of the tools that has proved to be very powerful when evidencing these competences for further assessment is the use of DIGITAL PORTFOLIOS in which students can manage everything they want to show, in the development of their projects in the school. It has also been successfully included in ETHAZI highperformance cycles. It is precisely this practice that has been chosen this year among the ten best practices of Vocational Training in the Basque Country among more than 60 projects. It is a source of actual satisfaction for their authors, Rafael Balparda and Luis Mª Cardeñoso. An example of the excellent practices performed in the school. Congratulations and good luck in the final.

Record of Erasmus+ students for this academic year The Erasmus+ international mobility program is already a classic in Calasanz at this time. The experience of 30 years in Europe is in excellent health and more and more students are encouraged to apply for a scholarship to do their internships in an EU company. This year we have broken the record and there are already 16 students from three different international projects, who are already enjoying an Erasmus+ scholarship in Italy, England, Portugal and Scotland. Both the levels of satisfaction and skills developed in this experience make it very interesting for the training of students, in fact, more and more companies are asking us for these experiential profiles as an indicator of a young person with initiative, open, communicative, adaptable, flexible and responsible. To all

of them we congratulate for their scholarships and we encourage them to take advantage of these three

months to the maximum, - Photos from various places in Europe are beginning to arrive. We feel so jealous!

San Jose de Calasanz travels to Finland to learn about its innovative educational system From March 20th to 24th we had the opportunity to participate in the mobility program for teachers promoted by Tknika, the Center for Research and Applied Innovation in Vocational Training. During this week we have been in Finland and visited the Finnish Education Agency, where we have been told about the importance of international mobility and teacher training. In addition, we have had the chance to get to know a program promoted by Team Academy, called Pop Up College. This program is developed voluntarily outside the curriculum for two months, with the goal that the participating students can develop their entrepreneurial skills generating services for the different stores that are in the shopping center where the program is located. We have also been able to visit different vocational training centers where intermediate training cycles

are developed, such as Mercuria and Point College and, universities where Higher Level Training Cycles are developed, such as Haaga-Helia and the University of Helsinki. In all of them, we have been able to enjoy an educational model where the focus of learning is on the students and the ultimate goal is learning

and developing the professional skills that make them employable; not the qualification. A model where spaces are adapted to learning and where the education-company link becomes evident throughout the learning process. A flexible educational model that adapts to the individual needs of each person.
