- Olá, eu sou o Albi. O meu nome é a abreviatura de albicastrense. Sabes o que significa? Albicastrense é a palavra que designa as pessoas que são naturais de Castelo Branco. Vem do latim Albicastrum, que significa: album, branco e castro, castelo.
- Hi, I’m Albi. My name is short for “Albicastrense”. Do you know what this word means? Albicastrense is the word for the people who come from Castelo Branco. It comes from the Latin word Albicastrum, which means: “album”, white; and “castro”, castle.
- E eu sou a Leuca. O meu nome vem do antigo nome da cidade: Castraleuca. Eu e o Albi vamos passear por esta bonita cidade da Beira Baixa e mostrar-te lugares únicos, históricos e divertidos. Vamos lá!!
- And I´m Leuca. My name comes from the city’s ancient name: Castraleuca. Albi and I are going to take a walk around this beautiful city in the Beira Baixa and show you unique, historical and fun places. Let’s go!
Estamos no centro da cidade. Aqui atrás é a Câmara Municipal e esta estátua é de uma pessoa muito importante que nasceu aqui há muitos, muitos anos, o Dr. João Rodrigues, mais conhecido por Amato Lusitano. Amato, era médico! Viajou por toda a Europa e até chegou a ser médico do Papa, quando esteve em Roma!! Em Dezembro, esta praça veste-se de branco para receber uma das festas mais bonitas e divertidas do ano: O Natal Branco! Há música, teatro, animação, muitas outras atividades e muita magia no ar. Adoramos!
This is the town centre. Behind us is the City Hall and this statue celebrates a very important person who was born here many, many years ago, Dr. João Rodrigues, better known as Amato Lusitano. Amato, was a doctor! He travelled throughout Europe and even became the Pope’s doctor, when he was in Rome!! In December, this square dresses in white to host one of the most beautiful and exciting festivals of the year: The White Christmas! There is magic in the air, with music, theatre, entertainment and lots of other activities. We love it!
Aqui ao lado fica o Centro Cívico, é onde se juntam dois edifícios bem diferentes: o Cine-Teatro Avenida e o moderno Centro de Cultura Contemporânea de Castelo Branco. Na Primavera fazem aqui uma feira muito saborosa. Não é, Albi? - Sim! Chama-se Sabores de Perdição. É uma deliciosa experiência gastronómica e cultural.
Right next is the Civic Centre, where two very different buildings come together: the Cine-Teatro Avenida (a cinema and theatre) and the modern Centro de Cultura Contemporânea de Castelo Branco (“an exhibitions place). In the Spring a very tasty fair takes place. Isn’t it Albi? - Yes! It’s called “Sabores de Perdição”, which actually means The Weakness for Flavours. It’s a delicious experience of food and culture.
- A Sé Catedral de Castelo Branco é um dos monumentos mais antigos da cidade. Estava em ruínas! Até que, há alguns séculos, foi reconstruída graças aos donativos de muitas pessoas bondosas que por cá moravam. - Inicialmente era uma igreja mais pequena e simples, mas foi aumentando o seu tamanho com as obras de requalificação que iam sendo feitas. - Logo ali adiante fica o Largo de S. João, com seu bonito cruzeiro. É a dois passos daquele jardim giríssimo…Olha! Aquela ponte une o Jardim com o Parque da Cidade. - Vamos Albi, mexe-te!
- The Sé Catedral de Castelo Branco is one of the most ancient monuments of this city. It was in ruins! Until, a few centuries ago, it was rebuilt thanks to the donations of many kind people who lived here. - It started as a smaller and simpler church, but it grew in size with all the restorations that were made. - Over there is the S. João Square, with its beautiful stone cross. It’s right next to that beautiful garden…Look! That bridge joins the Garden with the City Park. - Come on Albi, hurry!
- Este é um dos jardins mais bonitos da cidade. O verde dos arbustos salpicado pelo vermelho que jorra dos vasos e dos canteiros, recortado pelo azul translúcido da água e abraçado pelo tom dourado das esculturas! É o Jardim do Paço Episcopal. No Palácio funciona agora o Museu Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior.
- This is one of the most beautiful gardens in the city. Green bushes spotted with red pouring out of the flowerpots and flowerbeds, lined by the clear blue colours of the water and framed by the golden tone of the sculptures! It’s the Paço Episcopal Garden. The palace is now the Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior Museum.
- O Parque da Cidade, fica no espaço da antiga horta do Paço, aquele palácio enorme, que tem as portas abertas para o jardim donde viemos. Havia um famoso escritor albicastrense que dizia que a horta era um “quasi jardim”. E mais, sabes que logo a seguir à horta, existe um bosque? - Ora vamos lá ver se percebi! O palácio tinha um jardim, uma horta e um bosque. A horta e o bosque foram transformados no é hoje o Parque da Cidade. - Exatamente, Albi!
- The City Park is located on the old vegetable garden belonging to the bishop’s palace, that huge building with those doors opened to the garden we came from. There was a famous writer from the city who said that the vegetable garden was an “almost veritable garden”. And did you know that there is a grove past the vegetable garden? - Let me set this straight! The palace had a garden, a vegetable garden and a grove. The vegetable garden and the grove are now the City Park. - That’s right, Albi!
- Estamos no centro histórico da cidade. Parece que viajámos no tempo. As ruas são estreitas e calcetadas. Os Portados Quinhentistas emolduram o casario. E olha a Torre do Relógio lá no alto! - Já ali, na Praça principal, temos o Centro de Interpretação do Bordado de Castelo Branco. Lá dentro há um museu, uma loja e uma oficina dedicada ao bordado, com senhoras a trabalhar esta maravilhosa arte.
- This is the historical town centre. It looks like we travelled through time. The streets are narrow and cobbled. The houses are framed by façades from the 15th Century. Wow, look at the Clock Tower up there! - Over there, on the Main Square, there’s the Centro de Interpretação do Bordado de Castelo Branco. Inside, you can find a museum, a store and a workshop, all dedicated to the traditional embroidery of the city, with actual embroideresses working there.
- Manuel Cargaleiro é um importante pintor e ceramista, natural da Beira Baixa. Aqui no Museu, que tem o seu nome, podemos ver peças, não só da sua autoria, mas também de vários amigos seus. - As suas pinturas são cheias de cor! Adoro! - Que coincidência! A nossa caminhada pela História da cidade termina exatamente no local onde esta terá sido edificada há muitos, muitos anos atrás: dentro das antigas muralhas do castelo. - A construção do castelo e das muralhas remontam à Idade Média e são obra dos Templários.
- Manuel Cargaleiro is an important painter and ceramist from the Beira Baixa. Here in the museum named after him we can see works of art, not only some he authored, but also from several of his friends. - His paintings are full of colour! I love it! - Funny! Our walk through the town history ends exactly where, many years ago, the old castle walls once stood. - The castle and its walls were built during the Middle Ages by the Knights Templar.
- Olha Leuca! Sabias que estes aviões são os que ajudam no combate aos incêndios, durante o Verão? Finalmente chegámos ao Aeródromo! Gosto tanto de pregar os olhos ao céu e de ver os aviões a voar à velocidade da luz. - Velocidade da luz? - Sim. Muito, muito depressa, Albi. - Preferia pegar num Kart e dar umas voltinhas no Kartódromo ali ao lado!
- Leuca, look! Did you know these planes are used to fight all those forest fires during the summer? Finally, we arrived at the Airfield! I love watching the sky above and see the planes go by at light speed. - Light speed? - Yes! Very, very fast, Albi. - I’d rather sit behind the wheel of a go-kart and make some laps around the track over there!
- Chegámos às hortas sociais da Quinta do Chinco. Estes terrenos estavam abandonados, há muito tempo, mas agora cada um destes pedacinhos de terra tem um dono. Até o meu avô aqui tem uma horta, queres ver? Na semana passada ele disse-me que as aboboreiras estão em flor. Além disso desenvolvem, aqui, atividades pedagógicas que nos chamam a atenção para a importância de preservarmos o meio ambiente e os seus recursos e de consumirmos frutas e vegetais.
And here we are, the Quinta do Chinco social vegetable gardens. These lands were abandoned for a long time, but now each of these bits of land has an owner. Even my grandfather owns a vegetable garden here, do you want to go see it? Last week he told me the pumpkins were blooming. There are also educational activities here, where children are reminded of how important it is to protect the environment and it resources and also to eat fruit and vegetables.
- A mãe natureza é incrível não é Albi? Aliás, não sei se sabes! As peças que estão em exposição aqui no Museu da Seda são feitas a partir de fios muitos fininhos, quase invisíveis, que saem das mãos dos bichinhos da seda. A seda é aquele tecido muito delicado e quase transparente que se usa para fazer as blusas das senhoras.
- Mother Nature’s amazing , isn’t she, Albi? Actually, I don’t know if you’re aware... The art works on display here at the Museu da Seda, which means Silk Museum, are made of incredibly fine and almost invisible strands of thread that come out of the silkworm. Silk is that very delicate and almost transparent fabric used to make blouses.
- O Parque do Barrocal é um verdadeiro mergulho na natureza dentro da cidade! Podemos percorrer os passadiços, ver as vistas nos miradouros suspensos e observar aves. - E brincar no parque infantil, Leuca! - Sim Albi, podemos brincar. Mas sabias que o parque do Barrocal integra os territórios classificados do Geopark Naturtejo Mundial da UNESCO e da Reserva da Biosfera Transfronteiriça Tejo/Tajo? - Somos uns privilegiados!
- The Barrocal Park is like diving into nature in the middle of the city! We can walk the pathways and see the view or do some bird watching from the viewpoint. - And also have fun in the playground, Leuca! - Yes Albi, we can also play. But did you know that the Barrocal Park is part of the Naturtejo, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and also part of the Tejo/Tajo/ Transboundary Biosphere Reserve? - We’re very lucky, aren’t we?
Aqui ao lado está a nascer o Parque Urbano da Cruz de Montalvão. Assemelha-se a um enorme manto verde com pedaços de nuvens refletidos na água das lagoas. É rasgado pelo cinza da ciclovia e das áreas de circulação e, também, pelo branco da bancada do anfiteatro. De bicicleta, skate, trotineta, a correr ou simplesmente a andar, vai ser um espaço para todos. Olha, Leuca, no anfiteatro iremos passar momentos bem agradáveis e relaxantes.
Next to us is the Cruz de Montalvão Urban Park. It looks like a big green mantle with bits of cloud reflecting on the lagoon waters. The grey colour of the cycle paths and walkways that run through it and the white from the amphitheatre make a great effect! Everybody can enjoy and ride their bicycle, their scooter, run or simply walk. We can also enjoy pleasant and relaxing moments in the amphitheatre, Leuca.
Agora é tempo de nos divertirmos! Temos muitas coisas para fazer aqui no Parque Urbano da cidade: podemos ir à piscina, brincar no skate park, andar de bicicleta e até fazer um piquenique, ... - Albi, eu já escolhi, vou dar um mergulho! As piscinas são enormes e a água está ótima. E tu? - Acorda, Leuca! Vou andar de skate, como é óbvio! Foi um dia em cheio Albi!! Estou ansiosa para chegar à escola e contar tudo o que vi e aprendi sobre esta maravilhosa Cidade!
And now let’s have fun! There’s lots to do here at the Urban Park: we can go swimming in the pool, play in the skate park, and even have a picnic,... - I’ve already decided Albi, I’ll go for a swim! These pools are huge and the water’s great. What about you? - Leuca...Helloooo?! I’ll go skateboarding in the park, obviously! This was an excellent day, Albi! I can’t wait to go back to school and talk about everything I saw and learned about this wonderful city!
