ecord attendances at MIPJunior and MIPCOM, more World Premiere TV and International Screenings than ever, a remarkable Japan Country of Honour programme, a Personality of the Year, Shonda Rhimes, who packed delegates into her keynote interview and a tour de force opening keynote from Sony Corporation’s President and CEO Kazuo Hirai, combined to make for a highly successful and memorable MIPCOM 2016. MIPJunior set the tone for the week with a record 1,600 participants including more than 630 buyers (+10%), 1,200 programmes in the screening library and 260 new development projects presented to potential partners. Delegates were treated to a double helping of World Premiere TV Screenings with “Splash and Bubbles” (produced by the Jim Henson Company and Herschend Enterprises) and “Grizzy and the Lemmings” from Studio Hari Production. At the main MIPCOM event, which drew delegations from 108 countries, attendance reached some 14,000 with 4,900

buyers registered including 1,500 acquisition executives working for digital platforms and SVOD. 2,000 exhibiting companies packed the Palais des Festivals with new national pavilions from Chile, New Zealand, Morocco, the Philippines, Russia and Japan. With Japan as MIPCOM’s Country of Honour, 500 Japanese executives from 104 companies attended MIPCOM.

Sony premiered a new hit: “The Halcyon” S ony Pictures Television hosted the World Premiere of Left Bank’s “The Halcyon”. The series debuted at Mipcom in the Grand Auditorium at the Palais des Festivals on Sunday 16th October. Ahead of the premiere, there was a roundtable event in which Keith Le Goy, President of International Distribution, SPT; Andy Harries, Chief Executive of Left Bank Pictures; Executive Producer, Sharon Hughff and actors Olivia Williams and Steven Mackintosh discussed the show and answered questions. Commissioned by ITV in the UK, the eight-part drama is set in 1940, and tells the

story of a bustling and glamorous five-star hotel at the centre of London society at the start of World War Two. the 8 x 1 hour thriller series has been secured ahead of its premiere by ZDF in Germany, SBS in Australia, HOT in Israel, NRK in Norway, DR in Denmark, RUV in Iceland, MTV3 in Finland, VRT in Belgium, and Lumière in Benelux. Starring Leïla Bekhti (The Prophet) and Gustaf Hammarsten (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), “Midnight Sun” first aired on 23 October on SVT and later this year on CANAL+ under the Création Originale brand. Mega Chile closed output deal with Eccho Rights C hile’s leading broadcaster Mega has entered into a four series output deal for new series from Ay Yapim in Turkey represented by Eccho Rights. The first series is Turkey’s success of the season, “Insider”, which premiered mid-September on Show TV, and is currently scoring the highest ratings seen in Turkey for many years. The second series is “Brave and Beautiful”, starring Tuba Büyüküstün and Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ. In addition, Mega is also acquiring the brand new series “Bu Sehir Arkandan Gelecek” and “Fi Pi Ci”.

MIPCOM HOSTED FIFTH ANNUAL WOMEN LUNCH

T

he MIPCOM “Women in Global Entertainment Power Lunch” once again featured some of the industry’s heavy-hitters discussing the role of women, both on and off screen. The fifth edition of MIPCOM’s annual thought leadership and networking event for the most influential women shaping the future of TV and entertainment was run in partnership with A+E Networks and Lifetime, along with The Hollywood Reporter. The meeting took place on Monday 17 at the Hotel Majestic; introduced by Amanda Hill , Chief Marketing Officer, A+E Networks, who took a deep dive into the female experience, uncovering and highlighting the important issues facing women today via a recent Lifetime study. In addition, Hill discussed Lifetime’s launch of a new multiplatform initiative called THE FEMPIRE, which targets fourth-wave feminists. This was followed by a presentation from Emmy Award-nominated Constance Zimmer and fellow actress Shiri Appleby , who both star in Lifetime’s “UnREAL”. They talked about their respective roles in the series, and how it ties into Lifetime’s ethos and what female empowerment means today.

WORLDWIDE PREMIERE FOR RED ARROW’S “MATA HARI”

T

he brand-new series “Mata Hari” was featured as the Sunday Night MIPCOM 2016 World Premiere TV Screening. Based on a true story, “Mata Hari” is an epic new English-language drama that charts the extraordinary life of exotic dancer, courtesan and infamous spy, Mata Hari. The series stars French actress Vahina Giocante (“The Libertine”) in the title role, and features an acclaimed international cast including Christopher Lambert (“Highlander”), and John Corbett (“Sex and the City”). All three attended MIPCOM, together with other cast members Svetlana Khodchenkova (“Wolverine”) and Maxim Matveïev (“Weekend”), and took part in numerous high-profile events including a Q&A session directly following the Screening. ITV AND SECUOYA CLOSED DISTRIBUTION DEAL m Ahmet Ziyalar, José Miguel Barrera, Jaime Guerra and Can Okan

At Mipcom Grupo Secuoya, through its international distributor Secuoya Content Distribution, closed a deal with Turkish distribution company ITV Inter Medya. The agreement will see ITV distributing SCD’s wide catalogue in various territories, and also producing some of them in Turkey and nearby countries. The deal was signed in Cannes by ITV Inter Medya and Secuoya Content Distribution’ main executives: ITV’s founder Can Okan and José Miguel Barrera, director of the international department at Grupo Secuoya.

TELEFE strengthens its positioning in Asia and the A Middle East

t Mipcom, Telefe closed new deals that strengthen its positioning in Asia and the Middle East: Super Series “El regreso de Lucas” was acquired in Israel by channel Yes and in Vietnam by PhuThai Media; while the format was bought by the production company Beelink for Middle East and

North Africa. Those deals are added to the ones closed with UniMas in the US, Mega in Chile, Ecuavisa in Ecuador, Medcom in Panama, Televicentro in Honduras, Teletica in Costa Rica and Unitel in Bolivia. “El regreso de Lucas” is a coproduction between Telefe from Argentina and América TV from Perú. Additionally, Telefe sold “Dulce Amor” to the production company Juita Viden from Malasia. The telenovela is a co-production between Telefe and Enrique Estevanez’s LCA Producciones which has been already sold to El Salvador, Bosnia, Panama, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Turkey, Angola and Mozambique on its original version, whereas the format has been adapted in Mexico, Colombia and Chile.

Comarex sold a Mediaset format

M

ediaset Distribution and the Asian broadcaster Astro signed a deal for the production and distribution of Mediaset’s series in Malasya. The arregement was made by three parts: Mediaset, Astro and Global Station, a Malasian production company which has created some of the most succesful drama series of the country. Thanks to this negotiation, Astro and Global Station will adapt Mediaset’s series “Tuscan Passion” for the Malasian audiences, considering also the viewers in Southeast Asia.

YouTube bets on originals I

n the Media Mastermind section of Mipcom, Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Content for YouTube, delivered a keynote about the Original series and movies being featured on YouTube Red. She was joined on stage by Kevin Beggs, Chairman of Lionsgate TV and Burnie Burns, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Rooster Teeth. Daniels said: “YouTube is a place where individualism thrives, diversity flourishes and where new genres and content formats are launched every single day. It’s where a new generation of entertainers share their personal stories to a world that is eager to listen and talk back. I truly believe this is the evolution of television - a platform where distribution is democratized, and where global communities drive what’s popular.” The executive explained that their goal is to be uniquely YouTube: “Our thesis is simple: Identify YouTube’s most engaging stars and top genres, and invest in the content that fans tell us they want. In other words, let our community drive our content. Over the last year, we’ve seen our original series become one of the leading drivers of YouTube Red subscriptions, with viewership that rivals cable shows in the US”, she said. Over half the time people spend watching Originals is on their mobile phones. And in the living room, Red members are watching over 75% percent more YouTube on their TV’s than the average YouTube viewer.· “We’re also seeing a virtuous cycle between

Mondo TV expanded its footprint in the China M

ondo TV announced that it has signed a production agreement for the production of three new animation projects in 3D CGI with the group Henan York Animation, already partner on the project connected with the animated TV series titled Invention Story. Under the contract the three projects are to be completed by November 2020. Global budget for the transaction

will be USD 24 million which Mondo TV will pay along the production. The first 3D production project will be based on a new property currently under development, targeted to a pre-scholar age group, and provisionally titled “The Rowly Powlys”, whose production will start beginning of November 2016. This contract marks a new important step in the expansion strategy of Mondo TV

Played by the young Argentinian actress Chiara Francia — previously seen in series like Patito Feo, Consentidos and Chica Vampiro — Heidi will experience her exciting adventures in the big city alongside many larger-than- life characters, played by Mercedes Lambre and Flor Benitez from teen drama Violetta, Victorio D’Alessandro, Minerva Casero and Pancho.

FREMANTLEMEDIA EXTENDED DIGITAL DEAL WITH YOUKU CHINA F remantleMedia International (FMI) announced that it has extended its multi-year digital deal with the China headquartered portal, Youku. The agreement was originally signed in 2013 and has now been extended for another three years. The deal ensures a variety of FMI’s premium entertainment and drama content continues to be available to Chinese online audiences

averaging 130 million unique users a day. Second only to Youtube in terms of worldwide viewership, Youku also has an incredible 240 million mobile users. FMI was one of the first independent distributors to strike such a deal of this scale with the enormously popular platform and continues to be a major contributor to Youku’s lineup. Ganesh Rajaram, FMI Executive Vice President Asia, said, “We have been working with Youku for three years now and are thrilled to extend our agreement with this fantastic partner. BBC and B Endemol will coproduce in Brazil

BC Worldwide and Endemol Shine Brazil closed a production deal for scripted and entertainment formats from the British company for the Brazilian market. t Mipcom FOX Networks Group Latin America confirmed the acquisition of the best-selling book “Santa Evita”, from Argentinian author Tomás Eloy Martínez,. The Group will develop the first series based on the novel, with wide international impact. Published on 1995 “Santa Evita” became a best seller in many different languages. elemundo and Netflix announced that the new and anticipated Súper Series “El Chema“, “Sin Senos Sí Hay Paraíso” and “Guerra de Ídolos“ will premiere exclusively on the SVOD service for Latin America (including Mexico and Brazil), as well as Spain and the US. The extension of the agreement between both companies includes on-demand rights for series such as “La Reina del Sur” and telenovelas like “Pa-

sión de Gavilanes” in multiple territories. ori Media Group announced that its popular reality show “Power Couple“, created by Abot Hameiri, was sold to RTL Croacia. The first season will have 20 episodes and will air in 2017. ALL3MEDIA SECURED NEW COMMISSIONS FOR “WORLD OF WEIRD”

ll3media International has secured two commissions in Europe for brand new factual entertainment format “World of Weird”, as broadcasters in Poland and Norway sign local versions. Originally produced by Lion Television for the UK’s Channel 4, World of Weird, which is currently airing in the UK, has now been picked up for adaptation in Poland by Discovery and in Norway by NRK. he interactive TV-event The Verdict, which celebrated its world premiere at MIPCOM in Cannes, has scored sensational ratings at its simultaneous broadcast in several European territories. The feature length legal thriller was watched by 6.9 million viewers with a 20 % market share in Germany. Austrian Television celebrated a 28% market share with an audience of about one million viewers. In Slovakia and the Czech Republic the viewer number lay far above the channel’s average with high responses on social media platforms. Similar to ARD and ORF viewers, the audience at the Cote D’Azur also approved.

Imagina US and Argos will co-develop two new series

magina US and Argos signed a co-development and production agreement to make two series, which were presented on MIPCOM. The first one, named “Habeas Corpus”, is about two coroners who travel to Mexico from different countries to investigate repeated disappearances of people. The second one, “Lord Of Money”, is based on the life of Ramón Milián Rodríguez, a former CIA agent involved in the money laundering in Pablo Escobar’s businesses. “We are evolving in new ways in the production of content and the search for stories, as well as strategic partnerships,” said Oscar Lopez, Executive Vice President of Imagina US. “We have found a great ally in Argos, a production company with a proven track record in the market who shares our vision of quality, impact and incredible stories.”
