“TELETUBBIES” HEADS TO THE US MARKET WITH NICK JR.
NETFLIX TO LAUNCH IN SPAIN IN OCTOBER 2015 The subscription video-on-demand platform expects to achieve a good business in Spain when it launches in the country in October. According to El Mundo’s interview with Reed Hastings, the platform’s creator and president, the SVOD service will premiere in Spain with a wide offer including national films and series, but without “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black”, due to a pay-TV rights contract with Canal+. Hastings sees piracy as a sign that the population likes to consume online content. “We offer an alternative which is easier and faster than looking for a torrent file,” he added. “We had similar situations in the Netherlands and Canada, where there are high levels of piracy, but in both we’re a successful service”. Regarding content and pricing, not many clues were given during the interview, but Hastings confirmed an initial situation similar to France and Germany, a reduced catalogue and around €8 per month.
DHX Media has signed a significant deal for “Teletubbies” with Nickelodeon picking up US broadcast and on-demand rights to the much-anticipated brand new 60 x 12’ series for its Nick Jr. channel. The series has been commissioned by CBeebies in the UK. Nickelodeon has also taken all 365 classic “Teletubbies” episodes from the original series for Noggin, its new mobile subscription service for preschoolers. The show was re-imagined for a new generation in 60 brand new episodes for 2016. “Teletubbies” first launched in 1997 and became one of the most successful global children’s brands of all time. It has reached over one billion children to date and the original episodes have aired in over 120 territories in 45 different languages. It was the very first western pre-school property to air on China’s CCTV reaching an audience of 300 million children.

INTERVIEW ENTREVISTA
“CEE is a robust region that encompasses different economic situations” Robyn Hurd, Senior Director International Content Sales, EMEA from A+E Networks; describes the main goals of the company throughout a region with a large number of countries, programming needs and business trends.
B
y the end of last year, A+E Networks expanded its London-based international content distribution team, and one of these new members is Robyn Hurd, Senior Director International Content Sales for the EMEA region. The executive has reinforced the catalogue with the launch of A+E Studios in late 2014, where the company is focused to position itself within the scripted series arena, making a lot of noise with the promotion of ´UnREAL´. Señal Internacional interviewed Robyn Hurd to describe this particular context. Which are your main goals in this new position in A+E Networks? “As our business continues to grow and flourish in CEE, it was important to bring in another seasoned sales rep to support the region. We’ve recently hired Marica Giessen in that role. We have great relationships with the leading broadcasters across the territory and we’re always looking to expand our client base across the region. A+E Networks has been a leading producer and supplier of acclaimed factual content for decades with globally successful factual franchises. Our focus now is to repeat that success in the scripted space, not just across CEE, but worldwide”. How would you describe the CEE region in terms of programming needs and trends? “CEE is a robust region that encompasses a large number of countries in different economic situations, which makes it a great region to work in. Local productions along with big US series are the heart of many CEE schedules at this point in time. The appetite for factual content

is strong and there seems to be a real divide between channels wanting ´safe´ content and those wanting something a little more edgy. Poland has been a big territory for us this year, we’ve seen huge demand for our TV movies, scripted, long running factual franchises, lifestyle and core history across premium, pay, free and basic”. Which type of programming or business model is more accurate now in the region? “Many of the big players out there have historically been tied into large Studio output deals. This type of business model is shrinking somewhat which is creating room in the acquisitions budget for content from other distributors. While big

US series and features still rate well across the region, the opportunities for buyers to diversify their schedule by acquiring from other sources, is resulting in a broader range of product hitting the screens”. Which will be your next sales and expansion goals? How will NATPE contribute to that? “I think there’s great potential for us to grow our business in the CEE region. NATPE is a great opportunity to meet a large number of our clients face to face very quickly. A+E Networks has attended NATPE Europe for many years. It’s an important market for us, and a great opportunity to follow up with CEE clients since meeting at MIPTV. Since launching A+E Studios International last October, our biggest sales priority has been generating buzz around new scripted series, mini-series and movies to clients around the world. We are looking forward to showcasing our new content to our longstanding CEE clients and growing our partnerships within the region”. Will you be focused on developing the business potential in some particular country or market? “We are planning to target Russia and CIS as they are currently facing significant challenges, but they are territories where we’re looking to build our client base. We are also targeting Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, the Balkans and the Baltics, as it’s really important to continue growing the relationship we already have with these territories and expand our client base”.

“Our content is good because we produce to program” Turkish content is at its peak, and it’s very appealing because it has a very good rhythm and color”.
FOX International Channels’ VP Regional Sales analyzes the main strengths and news regarding the brand, which is now offering a versatile catalogue with Turkish telenovelas and renowned original productions.
I
n 2015 FOX International Channels Content Sales has strengthen its brand with a diverse and versatile catalogue which includes Turkish telenovelas and renowned original productions. Señal Internacional talked to VP Regional Sales Sebastian Snaider, who analyzed this new environment. How do you evaluate the current positioning of the company? “We had a very good beginning of the year because we’ve met some clients’ needs with our own strategy. At LA Screenings we offered very good content and we increased the amount of titles. Many of our clients are seeking for Turkish telenovelas, and through our global area, we have four titles that are leaders in Turkey’s primetime: ‘That’s My Life’, ‘Cherry Season’, ‘In Love Again’ and ‘My Husband’s Family’. And it’s not that common to have a need on one side and, from our side, to have such a good content like that. Undoubtedly,

How do international contents strengthen the catalogue? “‘The Walking Dead’ has always helped us. It is breaking records year after year and it works so well that it’s still a hit on our catalogue. We’ve also added ‘Wayward Pines’, which we premiered in May and, so far, many clients are interested in it. We’ve also presented ‘Outcast’, which has generated a lot of expectation to see how it’s going to work out. We have many friends in the industry and the clients trust our contents. ‘Outcast’ is a series by ‘The Walking Dead’ creator Robert Kirkman, so it’s a guaranteed success”. Why do series have such a great performance in Latin America? “Series in all genres are very appealing right now. This year we have also added ‘Sitiados’, which is a 9 episodes series played by Benjamín Vicuña, Andrés Parra and Marimar Vega, three amazing stars. It’s a Premium show, strong and dynamic, and everyone will be talking about it because of its format, quality and unique production. We’ve never done something like that before”.
not only for free-to-air but also for OTT platforms. And, of course, documentaries with the signature of Nat Geo. We are lucky to have the unique production of ‘Killing Jesus’, which is working very well for us; we sold it to our main regional clients and the results were fantastic”. Why is still important to bet on local productions? “It’s important because they give the local flavor and idiosyncrasy. ‘Cumbia Ninja’ is the perfect example: it’s an out of the ordinary show that represents the audience’s need for watching a different and localized product. We have premiered the second season and the third one will be launched in October. People like to watch international series but also local productions”. Does the FOX brand work as a quality guarantee? “FIC’s brand is the key. It makes sense for us to say that our content is good because we produce to program. So, if we want the best content to be in FOX, then what we sell is actually the best”.

Which other genres are highlights in FIC’s catalogue? “Besides the series, we’ve also included telenovelas, which is something that Latin America and US Hispanic seek a lot, n Wayward Pines
