UNO / DE VISITA EN PARANAL

Si anda un sábado en Antofagasta, este puede ser un notable paseo. Ese día, el Observatorio Paranal, ubicado 130 kilómetros al sur de la ciudad, se abre a visitas guiadas gratuitas para turistas y público general, a las 9:45AM y 13:45PM. Eso sí, se debe llegar en auto por cuenta propia y, como los cupos son limitados, es necesario inscribirse previamente, con la mayor antelación posible, a través del Formulario del Visitante que se encuentra en su sitio web. El recorrido comienza en el Centro de Visitas, con la presentación de un video de bienvenida. Luego se va a la plataforma del VLT, donde se puede ingresar al edificio de uno de los telescopios de 8,2 8

metros. Si las condiciones lo permiten, se puede visitar la sala de control, donde trabajan los astrónomos. Finalmente, se puede apreciar la residencia de Paranal. Más información en eso.org/public/chile

ONE / A visit to Paranal If you’re in Antofagasta on a Saturday, this is a great day out. Head to the Paranal Observatory, located about 130km to the south of the city, where they run free guided visits for the general public at 9:45 a.m. and at 1:45 p.m. You’ll have to get there on your own and, as there are limited spots, you also need to reserve beforehand with as much notice as possible. You can do so with the Visitor Form on the observatory website. The tour begins at the Visitors’ Centre with a video welcoming you to the site. Ventosa y solitaria, la playa La Rinconada se encuentra 65 kilómetros al norte de Antofagasta, antes de llegar a Mejillones. En 1997, en este lugar se creó la Reserva Marina de Chile, que protege una superficie de 330 hectáreas donde vive una colonia de tortugas verdes y otras especies como cangrejos, gaviotas y lobos de mar. CINCO / NAVEGAR POR LA BAHÍA DE MEJILLONES

Después de la visita a la playa Rinconada, una buena opción es continuar camino hacia el norte, subiendo por la ruta B-440. Atención con las vistas hacia la costa, que van apareciendo hacia atrás. Creado por Conaf en 2010, el Parque Nacional Morro Moreno, al sur de la península de Mejillones, es uno de los últimos oasis de niebla del país, que permite la vida de cactus y flores en pleno desierto costero. Tiene 8 mil hectáreas de superficie, es hábitat de lobos marinos, 12

A large stretch of soft sands lined by summer homes and cliff faces where, especially during the summer months, holidaymakers go to ride their quad bikes. The trip to Hornitos can be complemented with a stop off at the Tropic of Capricorn marker, just off the Ruta 1, 28km from Antofagasta, near Cerro Moreno Airport.

FOUR / See the first marine reserve Windswept and lonely, the La Rinconada beach can be found 65km north of Antofagasta, before you hit Mejillones. In 1997, this stretch of coast became the first marine reserve in Chile, protecting an area of 330ha of ocean that’s home to green turtles and other species such as crabs, seagulls and sea lions. FIVE / Sailing over the Bay of Mejillones After a visit to La Rinconada, a great option is to continue north along the B-440. Look out for the views of the coast that will appear behind you as you drive. Then, take the B-432 to Isla Santa María, where you can organise a boat trip with local fishermen. Finally, you’ll hit the historical Bahía de Mejillones, where companies such as JM Turismo have been running whale and seabird spotting trips for several seasons. It’s a historical place too, as it was the site of the famous Battle of Angamos during the War of the Pacific: a naval encounter in which the Peruvian warship Huáscar was captured by Chilean forces. SIX / Explore a new national park Created by CONAF in 2010, the Morro Moreno National Park, to the south of the Mejillones peninsula, is one of the last sea-fog oases left in Chile, populated by cacti and flowers fed by the thick morning dew of the desert coastline. The park covers 8,000ha, and is home to sea lions and sea otters or “chungungos”; it also contains a range of archaeologically important sites dating back to the time of the Chango culture. The area is protected mainly for academic reasons, but the Budeo Tour company does run treks along the slopes of the Morro Moreno hill, in a climb that takes around an hour and a half before reaching the Cactus Forest, which is filled with towering examples of this plant species. For more information, call +56/99882 2788; budeo.cl SEVEN / Ghost hunting in “little Humberstone” Around Antofagasta there are still a few remnants of the glory days of saltpetre to be found. One of these –perhaps the least well known- is around 98km to the north east of the city, in the area of Sierra Gorda. This is the Chacabuco nitrate settlement, built in 1922 by the Anglo

gloriosa del salitre. Uno de ellos –quizá uno de los más desconocidos– está a 98 kilómetros al noreste de Antofagasta, en la comuna de Sierra Gorda. Se trata de la oficina salitrera de Chacabuco, construida en 1922 por la empresa Anglo Nitrate Company Limited y declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1971. Llamada por algunos como “el pequeño Humberstone”, por su parecido con esa oficina en las afueras de Iquique, entre las ruinas que siguen en pie destaca el antiguo cine, un lujo para la época, que da cuenta del pasado esplendor que tuvo este lugar. Hay un cuidador al que se le debe pagar una entrada para visitarla, pero lo ideal es ir con guías que conozcan bien la 16

OCHO / APRENDER SOBRE LOS CHANGOS EN TALTAL

Ubicada 246 kilómetros al sur de Antofagasta, Taltal es una de las ciudades más bonitas y ordenadas del norte chileno. Aunque implica un viaje largo, resulta un gran lugar de paseo, donde hay restoranes imperdibles como el de la Hostería Taltal, con muy buenos mariscos y pescados y cocina de inspiración peruana. Pero 75 kilómetros antes de llegar al pueblo se encuentra uno

de los sitios arqueológicos más sorprendentes y desconocidos de la región: la Quebrada El Médano. Para llegar hasta aquí hay que bajar por un acantilado –es casi imprescindible ir con guía–, y tras cerca de una hora llegar a unas cuevas donde se encuentra una gran cantidad de pinturas rupestres elaboradas por los pueblos changos, antiguos habitantes de esta costa. Hay escenas de caza, dibujos de ballenas y dibujos de embarcaciones muy bien conservados –son alrededor de mil pinturas–, que según los estudios fueron confeccionados entre los años 500 y 1.500 después de Cristo. Nitrate Company Limited and declared a National Heritage Site in 1971. It’s known by some as “little Humberstone”, thanks to the likeness it shares with the much more famous ghost town just outside Iquique. Among the ruins here you can still find a cinema –a luxury in its daythat is testament to the splendid past enjoyed by this area of the north. You have to pay the guard for the visit, but the best option is to go with a guide who knows the local history well. Rutas del Desierto organise a range of cultural tours throughout northern Chile. Tel. +56/99316 7915; rutasdeldesierto.cl EIGHT / Learn about the Chango culture in Taltal Some 246km south of Antofagasta, Taltal is one of the prettiest and tidiest cities in the north of Chile. Although this is a long trip, the town is a wonderful place for a day out, as there are some fantastic restaurants such as Hostería Taltal, with excellent shellfish, fish, and Peruvian-style cooking. Some 75km before you hit Taltal, you’ll drive past one of the most amazing and little-known archaeological sites in the region: Quebrada El Médano. To reach the canyon, you have to descend the cliffs above it -meaning going with a guide is important-, and after an hour’s walk you’ll reach a cave network filled with paintings made by the Chango culture who inhabited this region centuries ago. There are hunting scenes, whales and boats all represented in the paintings –around 1000 in total, all in good condition–, and experts say they were made between 500 and 1500 AD. Con una larga tradición que data desde el siglo XIX con la llegada de los primeros colonos alemanes, Valdivia es la capital cervecera de Chile. Con más de una decena de cervecerías en la ciudad hoy –como Cuello Negro, Selva Fría o Calle-Calle–, buen dato es El Growler (Saelzer 41, +56/63222 9545), un local para comer sándwiches y otras preparaciones contundentes, acompañadas de algunas de las mejores cervezas elaboradas en Valdivia y los alrededores. BEER / With a tradition that stretches back to the 19th century and the arrival of the first Germans to the area, Valdivia is certainly the beer capital of Chile. There are over a dozen breweries in the city today –including Cuello Negro, Selva Fría and Calle-Calle-, but perhaps the best tip is to head to El Growler (Saelzer 41, +56/63222 9545), a bar that serves burgers and other hearty pub food alongside the best beers made in Valdivia and the surrounding area. 18

Antes del boom, Máncora era un pequeño pueblo de pescadores que contaba con apenas un par de posadas y cebicherías. Y, como gran parte de los balnearios del norte peruano, la calle principal era la carretera Panamericana. Hoy, el camino más importante sigue siendo el mismo, aunque ahora está rodeada de hoteles, restoranes, ferias de artesanía y bares donde el reggaetón está a la orden del día. Es, sin dudas, un lugar para la fiesta.

Huge sea turtles gliding through the pristine waters. That’s the sight that’ll greet you as you walk out over the small pier surrounded by colourful fishing boats. Alongside these majestic animals, a dozen or so tourists will be splashing around in the water. It’s an almost daily scene here at El Ñuro, a tiny and almost forgotten fishing village on the northern Peruvian coast that has become somewhat famous as a shelter for sea turtles. El Ñuro is in the Department of Piura, and is one of the newest attractions near Máncora: the surfing beach that’s been a magnet for young holidaymakers since the end of the 90s, and that today receives more than a million visitors per year.

But among the dozen or so bustling restaurants in the centre, there is a little culinary gem that’s well worth a visit. La Sirena de Juan sits on the main drag: a wonderful indie restaurant with just over ten tables that serves up scrumptious seafood dishes based around the catch of the day. There are cebiches and delicate Nikkei “tiraditos”, made with fresh fish such as tuna, grouper and swordfish –which are abundant in the area-, as well as Asian-style stews and, of course, some great cocktails. A Break for the Family Some 20 minutes from Máncora, you’ll find Vichayito, a family-oriented beach town that has garnered a lot of fame in recent years, thanks mainly for its calmer vibes. But, of course, the accommodation on offer here is also excellent, running from comfortable hotels overlooking the ocean to huge family mansions coming with cooking and cleaning services included. One of the more original options is Hotel Vichayito Bungalows (aranwahotels.com), which has 22 comfortable and fully equipped Bedouin tents that allow visitors to sleep within earshot of the softly breaking waves. It’s perfect for couples, and just steps from the beach; each tent even has its own private terrace with hammocks included. Just 4km further on is the beach of Pocitas that, as its name suggests (“pocitas” means “pools”), has a series of naturally formed pools that are uncovered at low tide. This is a holiday spot for Lima’s elite, and is home to some of the most exclusive hotels in the region. One of the newest options is the Hotel Arennas Máncora (arennasmancora.com) that, besides comfortable rooms and five-star infrastructure, has one of the region’s top restaurants. Located right opposite the beach, with a sea view and a dozen or so enormous palm trees, the restaurant has a menu stocked with locally sourced produce such as cebiches, pastas and fish, with two dishes that keep the punters coming back for more: the “patacones” (stuffed fried plantain) filled with langoustines, and the stunning sautéed tuna. Ocean Paradise Close by, Los Órganos is a small fishing town that is still yet to succumb –totally- to the burgeoning tourist trade. “CREO EN LA MÚSICA CON MENSAJE” “I believe in music with a message” Con 21 años, una de las protagonistas del programa “The Voice Chile” es la gran promesa del pop local, y su álbum grabado en Los Ángeles ha sido uno de los más esperados de la temporada. Camila Gallardo no es la típica aspirante a estrella dispuesta a mostrarse insinuante, como tampoco comparte ciertas actitudes de su generación. Es su voz la que manda. / At 21, one of the emerging stars from TV’s “The Voice Chile” is swiftly becoming the new golden girl on the local music scene. Indeed, her album, recorded in Los Angeles, has been one of the most hotly awaited in recent times. Camila Gallardo isn’t your typical pop star who’s ready to cash in by being suggestive; in fact, there are quite a few things she doesn’t share with her generational peers. It’s all about the voice. uedó vibrando. Camila Gallardo tenía 6 años y estaba sentada al piano en medio de una lección cuando un acorde, dice, invadió su cuerpo. La sensación se archivó de inmediato como una epifanía sobre la importancia vital de la música en su vida. Camila recuerda la posición exacta del teclado, la cercanía de un televisor, el rostro de su profesora. “La música marca tu historia”, dice con inusitada solemnidad para sus 21 años. La artista pop que más expectativa ha despertado en Chile después de Mon Laferte, parece algo mayor cuando habla, muy segura del trazo de una carrera meteórica. Nacida en Viña del Mar, Camila irrumpió en el programa de talentos “The Voice Chile” en 2015 y terminó segunda. Llamó la atención por su voz prodigiosa y una emotividad impresionante deudora del soul, el R&B y el folclor chileno. Eligió a Luis Fonsi como coach, quien junto a la compositora argentina Claudia Brant escribieron el single “Más de la mitad”, que supera las 15 millones de reproducciones en YouTube. Es el primer avance del álbum debut junto al sello Universal, que fichó a Camila con solo 19 años. Desde entonces la estrategia ha sido adelantar el disco con cuatro sencillos, creando una expectativa creciente sostenida en constantes presentaciones en vivo, incluyendo la Cumbre del Rock Chileno y el Festival del Huaso de Olmué. Su nombre se rumoreó para Viña 2018, pero Camila dijo públicamente que el

She could feel it in her bones. Camila Gallardo was 6 years old, sitting at the piano in the middle of a lesson when, as she tells it, a chord invaded her body. The feeling was ingrained in her forever, an epiphany regarding the importance of music in her life. Camila can remember the exact position of the keys, the proximity of a television, her teacher’s face. “Music marks your life”, she affirms, with a seriousness that’s beyond her 21 years. Perhaps Chile’s most talked about pop singer after Mon Laferte, she seems older when she speaks, sure of herself and of where her career is heading. Camila was born in Viña del Mar, and first burst into the Chilean mainstream in 2015 on the TV show “The Voice Chile”, where she came second. She was noticed for her prodigious voice and emotional performances that were reminiscent of soul, R&B, and even Chilean folk music. She chose Luis Fonsi as her coach, who later wrote her single “Más de la mitad” alongside Argentine composer Claudia Brant. The song has, to date, received more than 15 million views on YouTube. It’s the first taste we’ve had of her debut album from Universal, who signed Camila when she was just 19. Since then, the strategy has been to precede the album with a series of four single releases, to create a buzz that’s maintained with a busy touring schedule including big events such as the Cumbre del Rock Chileno Festival and the Festival del Huaso in Olmué. Her name was even in the mix for the Viña 2018 Festival (Chile’s most prestigious musical event), but Camila publicly stated that she didn’t feel prepared for such a big step.

Camila no se guarda adjetivos –“es un pedazo de productor, un capo, un genio”–, y se muestra absolutamente confiada en el material que compuso junto a otros músicos. —No estoy asustada. No tengo miedo a que no vaya a gustar el disco –dice–. Es un álbum con hartos relatos e historias. Tiene muchas variaciones musicalmente hablando, pero al mismo tiempo un hilo conductor que es muy bonito que genera todo un viaje al escuchar. Camila tampoco se hace problema con ser catalogada como una cantante pop, a pesar de los recelos que el género despierta entre ciertos públicos y especialistas por su condición comercial. —Sé que muchas veces se le considera como una música sin sentido y no, no es así –dice–. Claramente soy pop pero tengo un par de pincelazos de otros estilos musicales. Prefiero una visión más amplia de la música y no engañarnos en clasificar algo que no tiene la necesidad. La música se siente, te hace vibrar y ya está. —¿Te gusta el pop que domina en los rankings? —Hay distintos tipos de pop. Existe Coldplay, una de mis bandas favoritas, pero también está el reggaetón, el trap,

I’m not scared that people won’t like it -she says-. It’s an album full of stories. There’s a lot of musical variation, but at the same time there is a unifying thread that’s really special, and that will take the listener on a journey. Camila doesn’t seem to have a problem with the “pop” label, despite the way the genre is perceived by certain audiences and specialists given its commercial nature. —I know that a lot of people think pop is music without meaning but it really isn’t –she says–.Of course, I am a pop singer, but there are influences from other musical styles in there, too. I prefer a broader vision of music, and not to get caught up in the need to categorise things. Music should be felt. It should move you, nothing more. —Do you like the fact that pop music is so popular? —Well, there are different kinds of pop. There’s Coldplay, one of my favourite bands, but then you have reggaeton, trap, urban music. As artists, it’s our responsibility to make good music. I respect all kinds of artistic expression.

la música urbana. Los artistas tenemos la responsabilidad de hacer buena música. Yo respeto todo tipo de expresión artística. Cada uno sabe cuál es su arte y cómo lo está manejando, pero no hay que confundirnos. Creo en la música con mensaje. Entiendo que existan diferentes estilos, la música para bailar, para llorar, para reír, para cantar a todo pulmón. No le pondría un prejuicio innecesario a la música urbana que está sonando en los rankings. La imagen de Camila Gallardo no responde a los cánones habituales del pop femenino juvenil, donde el cuerpo y las curvas son parte de la propuesta. Aunque en el video del single “Ven” aparece semidesnuda, el tratamiento es otro, explica:

Everyone knows what their art is all about, but we shouldn’t get caught up in all that. I believe in music with a message. I know that there are different styles, music to dance to, to cry to, to laugh to, to scream your head off to. There’s no need to start with prejudices, especially with the urban music that is dominating at the moment. Camila Gallardo’s image isn’t what you’d expect from a young female pop star, where the body and the curves are part and parcel of the look. Although she does show some skin in the video for “Ven”, it’s shown in a different way, she explains: —When you see my body, there is no insinuation there. There are certain things I won’t do. I was in an advert for a festival and they asked me to wear a bikini. I said no, not because it doesn’t fit my “aesthetic”, but because of a moral concern. I didn’t feel comfortable. I want the attention to be on my voice, not my body. Perhaps one day I’ll do a video where I show more skin, but it will never be suggestive. Camila’s voice shines, and her ability to express emotions is palpable. She works with a coach and takes vices seriously.

—Cuando se muestra, no hay ningún tipo de insinuación. Hay cosas que no voy a hacer. Estuve en un comercial de un festival y me pidieron que me pusiera bikini. Dije que no, no por cuidar una línea estética, tampoco por responsabilidad moral, sino porque no me siento cómoda. Quiero atención en mi canto y en mi voz, no en el cuerpo. Quizá en algún momento haga un video donde muestre más piel pero nunca va a ser insinuante. La voz de Camila brilla, su expresividad resalta. La artista trabaja con un coach y además se cuida de excesos: —No tomo, no fumo, soy mala para carretear. Yo soy súper vieja chica para todo, es algo que me representa muy bien. —¿Eres buena para reclamar? —No, para nada. —Dijiste en una entrevista: “Somos una generación muy conformista, al borde de ser mediocres”. ¿Por qué tienes esa impresión? —Siento que se nos dan algunas cosas de manera muy fácil. Nacimos y crecimos con internet y nos estamos acostumbrando a una rutina conformista. Hablo con amigos de mi edad y gente que me rodea, y aplaudo por los que luchan y están ahí pegados a sus sueños y no los sueltan. Yo soy igual. Pero también hay un grupo donde están esperando que las cosas pasen nomás, se quedan y no avanzan. No hay sueños ni algo por lo cual despertar en la mañana. Ahí está la vida al final, preocuparte de cómo estás viviendo hoy, y potenciar al máximo para lo que quiero más adelante. Y esas aspiraciones, esa hambre, se dan cada vez menos.

—You once said in an interview: “We are a very conformist generation. Almost mediocre”. What gives you that impression? —I think a lot of things are too easy for us. We were born and raised with the internet, and we are falling into a conformist routine. I talk to friends my age and the people around me, and I really admire the ones who are out there fighting for their dreams. I’m like that. But there are also people who are just waiting for things to happen. They stay where they are and don’t move on. They have no dreams and nothing really to get up for. And that’s life in the end. Taking care of how you are living, and trying as hard as you can to get to a better place. It’s about those aspirations, that hunger. And we see less and less of that these days.

Justo frente al futuro metro había una que desde hace tiempo estaba en arriendo. Llevaba dos años vacía. La fuimos a ver y nos pareció que tenía potencial”, cuenta. La transformaron casi por completo. Revistieron algunas paredes con planchas de zinc, diseñaron una terraza en el segundo piso con una escalera de caracol –para que tenga acceso directo desde

El amontillado quizá sea uno de los vinos más literarios del mundo – recordemos, por ejemplo, el cuento de Edgard Allan Poe “El barril de amontillado”– y una de las joyas enológicas más importantes de las tierras andaluzas y del universo del vino. Valdespino, en tanto, es de las bodegas más antiguas y prestigiosas del Marco de Jerez, poseedora del codiciado y mítico “Pago de Macharnudo Alto” (viñedos con propia Denominación de Origen), donde se elaboran vinos mordientes y que saben a las blancas tierras albarizas. Son uvas cien por ciento Palomino Fino, procedentes de una sola parcela –o Single Vineyard– de 25 años de edad, relacionada con el asentamiento de la familia Valdespino desde el siglo XV. The wine combines “biological” maturation, which is carried out for ten years in Botas (American oak barrels), with a later “oxidising” maturation (where the wine interacts with oxygen in the air) for a further five years. FUTANGUE DESTACA POR CONTAR CON ALREDEDOR DE UN 70 POR CIENTO DE LA FLORA DE LOS BOSQUES TEMPLADOS DE SUDAMÉRICA, LA MAYOR PARTE DE LAS CUALES CORRESPONDE A SELVA VALDIVIANA. zonas altas del parque, la vegetación destaca por especies como la lenga, el ñirre, el notro y el canelo andino, mientras que en las zonas bajas predominan robles, laureles y ulmo, entre otras especies en riesgo de conservación. Mención aparte merece el llamado reino fungi, sobre todo durante otoño y la primavera, estaciones que gracias a sus condiciones de humedad y temperatura propician la aparición de hongos de variadas formas, tamaños y colores. Por su parte, los amantes de la fauna deben saber que el parque es hogar de especies como el puma, el pudú y el monito del monte: el diminuto marsupial endémico de estos bosques, considerado un “fósil viviente”, pues se trata del marsupial más antiguo del mundo y único representante de un orden extinto hace

millones de años. En esos mismos bosques, además, se refugia una gran variedad de anfibios, como la emblemática y en peligro Ranita de Darwin. En el orden de las aves, en tanto, el parque es hogar de especies representativas del sur del país, como el hued-hued, el chucao, el fío-fio y el carpintero negro –el pájaro carpintero más grande de Sudamérica–, además de cóndores fáciles de observar durante el día en los sectores altos del parque. Abierto durante todo el año, cada estación tiene sus particularidades en el parque y así, por ejemplo, en invierno es posible realizar una caminata con raquetas entre bosques nevados, mientras que la primavera es ideal para la pesca, el verano para el trekking y el otoño para excursiones fotográficas enfocadas en el particular colorido que adquieren estos bosques.

Of course, special mention has to go to the fungi, especially in autumn and spring, when the humidity and temperature are just right for fungi of all shapes, colours and sizes to bloom. The forests also house myriad amphibians including the iconic and highly endangered Darwin's frog. In terms of birdlife, the park boasts many of southern Chile's most iconic birds, such as the hued-hued, the chucao, the fío-fio and the black woodpecker –the largest woodpecker in South America–, as well as the condors that are easily spotted soaring overhead in the upland areas of the park. Parque Futangue is open all year round, and each season has its own charms. abrió hace poco más de un año en esta localidad de la Isla Grande, famosa por sus cocinerías. Un proyecto que en rigor partió hace unos quince años. “Con Carla siempre veníamos y mirábamos la casa. Nos gustaba mucho. Hasta que un día, cuando tuvimos la posibilidad de comprarla, no lo pensamos más y lo hicimos”, cuenta Yerko, al teléfono desde Dalcahue. Su idea fue siempre hacer algo abierto al público, por lo que tras varios años de

espera, finalmente pudieron abrir una cafetería, hoy convertida en la mejor del pueblo: tienen café de especialidad, que llega tostado semanalmente; además, ofrecen alrededor de 180 variedades de té, pastelería casera –con especialidades como la torta de ciruelas nuevas, que hacen apenas comienza la temporada– y otros platos como quiches y wraps de verduras, en una carta que va cambiando todos los días. Y luego abrieron el hotel, en enero del año pasado, siempre con la idea

de mantener la identidad cultural de la zona. Resulta que esta casa antigua, de la que ellos se enamoraron, es histórica además porque fue traída hace más de cien años en una minga por mar, desde el sector rural de Teguel. Por eso mismo, el diseño del hotel se hizo pensando en conservar la arquitectura original: en la obra participaron dos reconocidos constructores chilotes, Juan Sergio y Juan Carlos Montaña, quienes revistieron la casa con tejuelas de alerce. from Castro, is joint owner of this quaint hotel that opened its doors a year ago in this small town –famed for its restaurants- on Chiloé’s Isla Grande. Strictly speaking, however, the project started fifteen years ago. “Carla and I always came by and looked at the house. We loved it. Until one day, when we had enough money to buy it, we didn’t even blink and just went for it”, says Yerko, speaking over the phone from Dalcahue. The idea was always to do something for the public, and after several years of waiting they were finally able to open a café. These days, it’s the best in town, with speciality coffees that come in roasted on a weekly basis. What’s more, they serve around 180 different varieties of tea, homemade cakes –with specialities such as the early plum tart that’s made at the start of each harvest season-, and other dishes including vegetable quiches and wraps – although the menu changes every day. Then they opened the hotel, last January, with one eye always on conserving the area’s cultural identity. In fact, the old house that became the hotel, the one they fell in love with, is of historical importance as it was brought the island oversea as part of a “minga” (a communal activity where a house is moved without being dismantled) from the rural area of Teguel. This is why the hotel was designed to retain the original architecture as much as possible: two renowned local builders, Juan Sergio and Juan Carlos Montaña, worked on the project and covered the building with alerce wood wall tiles. Moreover, the interior was decorated using mostly locally sourced wood, the headboards are covered in wood tiles, and antique wardrobes have been used to preserve the right kind of atmosphere. Refugio de Navegantes has five rooms: two on the ground floor, each with two queen-size beds; two on the first floor, with a queen-size bed and a balcony overlooking the church of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores; and a suite on the second floor, with a super king-size bed, a sauna and two balconies: one overlooking the church and the Dalcahue canal, and the other overlooking the island’s interior. Although the hotel is in an old country house, it has a few modern touches: the doors have electronic locks, and there’s central heating, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a minibar in each room. The suite has satellite TV, and the other rooms have cable. Breakfast is served whenever the guests want, and includes cereals, fruit, cottage cheese and other local products such as honey, cheese, butter, eggs, homemade marmalades, milk and other seasonal produce.

With one eye on creating the first “Smart Tourist Destination in the Country”, the “Patagonia Termal” app –available for Android and iOS– and website bring users information on 52 hot spring complexes form Chile's La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos Regions. The system was launched this January, and was born out of the need for hot spring administrators to have access to a unified, modern platform that could provide all the practical information their thousands of annual visitors might need. Under guidance from the Undersecretary of Tourism and Sernatur (Chile's tourism authority), the project was financed by startup funding project Corfo and executed by the Pucón Campus of the Universidad de La Frontera (Ufro), as part of the larger meso-regional project “The National Parks, Lakes and Volcanoes Trail”. The information at PatagoniaTermal.cl and on the eponymous app is available in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese and allows users to discover hot spring complexes throughout the so-called “Mesoregion of Lakes and Volcanoes”, which extends out from the Andes of La Araucanía, north to Todos Los Santos and south to Patagonia Verde, including the lakes of La Araucanía, Siete Lagos, the Lake Ranco basin, Osorno Puyehue and Lake Llanquihue. In practice, the platform is perfect, for example, for discovering a new hot spring destination, such as the wild Termas Cañón del Blanco (canondelblanco.cl) –in the heart of La Araucanía's Andes, which has tubs and pools surrounded by outstanding natural landscapes–; and also for accessing all the updated information on the classic spots, such as the famous Termas de Malalcahuello (malalcahuello.cl) –which has a heated pool and over 1,300 square metres of spas– or the remote Termas Malleco (termasmalleco.cl), which are near the entrance to the Tolhuaca National Park and have sulphurous pools shaded by mighty monkey-puzzle trees. There is everything from small rustic hot springs hidden deep in the forest to much more sophisticated and luxurious thermal spas, and the idea is that the users can organise their own tour comfortably, with all the information they need, up to date and at the click of a button. The platform also includes complementary information –such as services and attractions in the area– and maps

Así, en el momento previo o de planificación, se puede conocer la oferta de una manera profunda y variada, mientras que durante el recorrido se puede interactuar en tiempo real por medio de la App. Una vez finalizado el viaje, en tanto, los usuarios pueden intercambiar experiencias y opiniones. ¿Y cómo se ordenan las termas? De acuerdo al tipo de experiencia que estas ofrecen, pensando en las preferencias y modalidades de viaje de cada turista. And the incorporation of cutting-edge technology will help each centre connect with their visitors and provide them all the information they need at each stage of their journey; even when they have no reception on their phones”. Likewise, the system also generates information on the market and user profiles to help the centres improve their administration.

Based on different search criteria, the platform puts the hot spring complexes in order and allows for interaction between centres and visitors for the duration of their trip. During the planning stage, for instance, there is in-depth information on the variety of centres in the region. Once underway, meanwhile, the app serves as a direct link to the centres and allows for quick communication. After they have finished their trip, users can exchange opinions on their experiences at the centres they visited. So how are the centres ordered? Based on the type of experience they offer and the preferences and requirements of each tourist. So you can search for information on the best hot springs to visit if you're looking for adventure, wellbeing, family, relaxation –such as the

welcoming Termas Llifén (termasllifen.cl), in the Lake Ranco basin– or spa treatments, such as the sophisticated and luxurious Termas Puyehue (puyehue.cl) that, as well as three pools, restaurants and even a bowling alley, run under a convenient all-inclusive system. Eugenio Benavente, President of the Lakes and Volcanoes Mesoregion, recalls that this project began back in 2001, given the region's potential for tourism, “thanks to our amazing volcanoes, lakes and rivers, our ski centres and the large number of hot springs; we have so many attractions to choose from”, and says that they hope that this innovative project will be a stepping stone to further development of the region's tourism industry and, of course, be highly valued by fans of the hot springs.

Ese es el objetivo de Ranopla (ranopla.cl), una plataforma que surgió hace diez años en España y que hace dos llegó a Chile, combinando de forma amigable la lectura con la tecnología. Cuentan con un catálogo de más de tres mil reseñas de libros con pruebas para que los niños respondan preguntas y ganen puntos por medio de un juego. “Tanto adultos como niños definen la lectura como algo aburrido, se hace porque se debe, pero no como un medio de entretención. Nosotros aportamos un componente lúdico: se ganan puntos por

leer, se avanzan etapas y se reciben incentivos, tal como en los videojuegos”, explica Lorena Leiva, directora del equipo de Ranopla Chile. Para utilizar la plataforma se debe tener la autorización de uso de la licencia, que puede ser particular, para colegios o grupos. A la fecha ya la han puesto en marcha en 59 colegios del país, permitiendo que los profesores pueden hacer un seguimiento del rendimiento de sus alumnos. “Lo que más destacan es el interés que genera en los niños. No se van dando cuenta cómo crece la cantidad de libros leídos y cómo mejoran sus rendimientos en habilidades de comprensión lectora”, dice Leiva.

READ AND PLAY To encourage children to love reading, and not to make them read. That’s the final goal of Ranopla (ranopla.cl), a platform that’s been around in Spain for ten years and first arrived in Chile two years ago, and which blends technology and reading in an innovative and fun way. The system has a catalogue of over three thousand book summaries and allows children to answer questions on them to earn points as part of a game. “Both adults and children see reading as a boring activity, something you do because you have to, but not as something fun. We’ve tried to gamify it: you earn points by reading, you pass different levels and there are incentives, just like in a videogame”, explains Lorena Leiva, head of the Ranopla Chile team.

ATRÁS DE LOS LIBROS Desde 2009, Ediciones Mis Raíces (misraices.cl/ediciones) busca ampliar la oferta editorial nacional para un público infantil y juvenil, basado en temas relacionados con el patrimonio cultural de Chile y América Latina. Así, su primera colección, “Niños artesanos”, se relacionó con la artesanía de los pueblos originarios en Chile, luego llegó la colección “Mujeres chilenas”, con capítulos históricos de figuras femeninas emblemáticas del país, y desde el año pasado trabajan en una nueva colección denominada “Relatos migrantes”. Con el fin de acercar a los niños a esta práctica, constantemente realizan instancias de lectura de las historias de “Mujeres Chilenas”, principalmente en colegios, bibliotecas, centros culturales y ferias del libro. CUENTACUENTOS Casi todas las regiones de Chile y 11 países ha recorrido la compañía de cuentacuentos La Matrioska (lamatrioska.cl), creada en 2012 por la periodista Nicole Castillo y el escritor Andrés Montero. El objetivo es fomentar la imaginación y la construcción de la identidad, y utilizar el poder de la palabra como una herramienta fundamental que permite, entre otras cosas, preservar la memoria e identidad y fomentar la lectura. “Nuestras narraciones no contemplan disfraces, ni ilustraciones, ni escenografía. Todo debe estar sugerido en la narración y ser imaginado por quien escucha. La protagonista siempre es la palabra”, cuenta Montero. En relación a la identidad, se

“Es olvido” de Nicanor Parra, “El árbol” de María Luisa Bombal o “Naturalezas muertas” de Alejandra Costamagna son algunas de las 45 obras literarias chilenas que incluye hasta hoy el catálogo de Sinopsis de Libros (sinopsisdelibros.cl). El proyecto –premiado por el Fondo del Libro y la Lectura en cuatro oportunidades– propone crear a través de las sinopsis nuevos puentes para acercar los libros al público en general y, en especial, a los más jóvenes. Pablo Herrera, director de la iniciativa, cuenta: “Creemos que existe una enorme necesidad de difusión de la literatura chilena y apuntamos a promover la lectura (…). Por eso nos interesa la sinopsis, un formato breve que nos vincula con el cine y sus códigos. Esta recodificación nos acerca a las generaciones nacidas en la era digital, habituadas a una interacción inmediata con los contenidos”. Las sinopsis –que están disponibles en su sitio web– reúnen obras de escritores chilenos de distintas generaciones, de diversos géneros y de alta calidad literaria. “En resumen, intentamos combinar estos criterios, rescatando obras clásicas y apostando por autores emergentes, para ofrecer una muestra atractiva y representativa de nuestra literatura”, dice Herrera.

Un número de RUT o de pasaporte chileno es lo único que se necesita para acceder a los más de 25.000 libros que tiene disponibles la Biblioteca Pública Digital o BPDigital (bpdigital.cl), iniciativa desarrollada desde 2013 por el Sistema Nacional de Bibliotecas Públicas de Chile de la DIBAM. “La biblioteca resuelve el problema de distanciamiento geográfico entre el usuario y la biblioteca física, y aumenta la cantidad de copias para los ejemplares más solicitados. Además, sirve de plataforma de difusión y barómetro para el mercado editorial. Pero, sobre todo, promueve la lectura y permite la difusión del libro a un costo más bajo”, explica Florencia García, directora de BPDigital. Para acceder desde el computador se debe tener instalado un lector de libros digitales (Adobe Digital Editions) y desde hace dos años también está disponible para dispositivos con sistema Android e IOS a través de una aplicación, que permitió aumentar los préstamos de 13.330 en 2015 a 113.575 en 2016. Los préstamos de libros tienen una duración de 14 días renovables a 21 y están disponibles en distintos formatos: Epub, PDF, MP3 (Audiolibros) y MP4 (Videocuentos).

Their first collection “Niños artesanos”, was all about the arts and crafts of Chile’s indigenous communities. That was followed by the “Mujeres chilenas” collection, which relates the life and times of Chile’s iconic women. And since last year the team has been working on a new collection “Relatos migrantes” (migrant stories). With the aim of getting children reading, they have organised a constant stream of public reading sessions of “Mujeres Chilenas”, mainly in schools, libraries, cultural centres and book fairs. For Isabel Ossa, who wrote the collection, “visiting schools and talking to the children is the best way to get them to fall in love with reading. When they meet people, like me, who make a living writing, children can really get to grips with the world of literature and see it from a completely new perspective”. She adds: “Discovering what’s behind a book, what makes a person want to write and the details of the creative process, is fascinating for kids and, without doubt, makes them more interested in reading”. This Book Month will see a new chapter added to the collection: “Margot Loyola, the voice of the people”, dedicated to the first Chilean folklorist in the year of her centenary. STORYTELLING The storytelling company La Matrioska (lamatrioska.cl), created in 2012 by journalist Nicole Castillo and writer Andrés Montero,

Everything should be suggested by the narration, and be imagined by the listener. The protagonist is the word”, says Montero. In terms of identity, the team has specialised in the recovery of collective memory through stories, especially in disadvantaged neighbourhoods or regions. They have a wide range of stories in their repertoire for children, young people and even adults; in fact, they say that some of the most successful sessions have been for grownups. “People usually think that storytelling is for kids, which is a big mistake. We tell adults stories that are appropriate for their age, from recognised authors or from oral tradition, and it’s incredible to see how much they enjoy it”. READING ONLINE A Chilean national ID or passport number is all you need to get access to the more than 25,000 books available on the Biblioteca Pública Digital or BPDigital (bpdigital.cl) website, which as an initiative was rolled out in 2013 by the Chilean National Public Libraries System run by DIBAM. “This library solves the problem of geographical distance between the user and the physical library, and increases the number of copies of our most-requested books. Of course, it also helps provide information and serves as a barometer for the publishing industry. But, above all, it encourages reading and allows for books to be shared at a much lower cost", explains Florencia García, director of BPDigital. To gain access from your home PC, you must have an ebook reader installed (Adobe Digital Editions), although for the past two years readers have been able to access the books on Android and iOS systems with an app. This raised lending numbers from 13,330 in 2015 to 113,575 in 2016. Tomar precaución de todas estas recomendaciones puede evitar un gran dolor de cabeza a la hora de presentarte en el aeropuerto, ya que no te permitirán subir al avión si no estás con la documentación vigente y reglamentaria, según las indicaciones de las autoridades correspondientes.

Is this your first time flying? Are your nerves getting the better of you? Are you starting to forget important things? The myths that you can travel with an out-of-date ID card or passport, with an ID card request certificate or with a driver's license are just that: myths. And they can ruin a holiday before it's even started. Among other documents that you'll need as you board your plane for a domestic flight is an indate ID card that's in good condition. For a flight overseas, depending on your destination, you can travel with your ID card or a passport, as long as these documents are not out-of-date. If you are abroad and you lose your passport or ID document, you can contact your country's consulate. They will help you with a travel permit or “safe conduct” that can get you back to your country of origin only in this kind of exceptional situation. Remember that if you are travelling abroad with minors, if they are not travelling with their parents, you must have a power of attorney from the mother or father detailing their express authorisation for their child to temporarily leave their own country to visit a specified foreign country. Being aware of all this advice can help save you a big headache when it comes to boarding your plane. You won’t even be able to pass security without having all of your documents up-to-date and in line with the corresponding aeronautical authority's guidelines.

I have learned to love the south because my partner has family there, so I’m there more often. But, if I had to choose, it’s the north. —Cities or nature? —A bit of both. When I travel I really like to get out of the city to get in touch with nature. But I also love a good urban tour.

—¿Museos o parques? —Tengo bastante experiencia en ambos: en los museos puedo pasarme el día entero y me pierdo. Por otro lado, encuentro que recorrer los parques sola es bacán. Ahora, si me hacen elegir, prefiero los museos.

—Museums or parks? —I have plenty of experience with both: I can get lost for a whole day in a museum. On the other hand, I think it’s awesome to walk around a park alone. Now, if I really have to choose, I think I prefer museums.

—¿Mantel largo o comida callejera? — Soy bien exigente, y aunque la comida callejera me gusta, en algunos casos y países me asusta porque no me ha hecho bien. Por mí, haría un tour por todos los restoranes de mantel largo del mundo. Me encantaría.

—Fine dining or street food? —I’m quite demanding. And although I do like the odd bit of street food, sometimes, and in certain countries, it scares me because I’ve had bad experiences before. If it were up to me, I’d do a world tour of fancy restaurants. I’d love that.

—¿Qué lugar de Chile te gustaría conocer? —Las Torres del Paine. Me gustaría, en realidad, conocer Chile de punta a cabo.

—What’s your first memory of travelling? —When I left Chile for the first time with my parents. We went to Venezuela to see my aunt and uncle. It’s a really happy memory.

—¿Qué es lo primero que echas a tu maleta? —Viajo bastante por trabajo, así que siempre tengo una maleta semiarmada con artículos personales, ropa, cortaviento, zapatillas.

—Where in Chile would you like to visit? —The Torres del Paine National Park. Actually, I’d like to get to know all of Chile, from top to bottom. —What’s the first thing you pack in your suitcase? —I travel a lot for work, so I always have a suitcase half-ready to go, with personal things, clothes, a windbreaker, trainers.
