Estimados amigos,

Dear Friends,

Ya estamos en la recta final de hacer realidad el modelo low cost y revolucionar la industria aérea en Chile y el Cono Sur, democratizando la forma de viajar y entregando la posibilidad a miles de pasajeros de volar junto a nosotros, incluso por primera vez.

We are now entering the final stages of making our low-cost air travel dream a reality and revolutionising the aviation industry in Chile and the Southern Cone by bringing air travel to the masses and helping more and more people fly, some for the very first time.

Sin embargo, vemos con gran preocupación los altos costos que impone el concesionario del terminal aéreo, Nuevo Pudahuel, a los operadores aéreos, llegando a subir sus tarifas en un 200 por ciento para vuelos domésticos, cobros que alcanzan el máximo permitido según el contrato de concesión diseñado por el Ministerio de Obras Públicas. Estos cobros son adicionales a las tasas de embarque que paga el pasajero, un tema que ya hemos abordado anteriormente. Lamentablemente, este modelo de concesiones no apunta a democratizar el viaje en Chile, todo lo contrario: busca recaudar más recursos para el Estado, pues el 77 por ciento de los ingresos que genera la empresa concesionaria de Arturo Merino Benítez (Aeropuerto de Santiago) van directamente a las arcas fiscales y tan solo el 23 por ciento va a la empresa ganadora de licitación que debe, con este mínimo porcentaje, financiar las obras de infraestructura y administrar el aeropuerto. Creemos que este modelo de concesiones no es el más adecuado y nos preocupa que se extienda a otros aeropuertos, encareciendo así los costos para las aerolíneas y por consiguiente para los pasajeros. Como industria hemos hecho grandes esfuerzos por bajar cada vez más los costos y transferir esos ahorros a las personas, sin embargo, vemos que desde la administración central no se está haciendo el mismo trabajo y, por el contrario, se están creando barreras para el desarrollo del turismo y la interconexión: un punto crítico para un país como Chile y un continente como Sudamérica, con distancias enormes que pocas veces se pueden recorrer con otros medios de transporte. Tengan la seguridad de que como compañía seguiremos trabajando para que más personas tengan la opción de volar.

Nevertheless, we are very concerned about the high costs being imposed by the owners of the Nuevo Pudahuel Air Terminal on air travel operators, in some cases pushing tickets prices up by 200% for domestic flights. These charges are at the top end of the permitted maximum established in the contract written up by the Ministry of Public Works. Airport fees are added on to the boarding fees paid by passengers, which is something I have spoken about in previous letters.

Unfortunately, this model is set up to impede our goal of bringing air travel to the people in Chile, in fact: it is designed specifically to gather more money for the State, as 77% of the income generated by the Arturo Merino Benítez Airport (Santiago) goes straight to the taxman, and the current airport administrator has to make do with just 23%. We believe that this model is out of date and we are worried that it will spread to other airports and push up air travel prices for passengers across the board. As an industry, we have made great efforts to reduce costs and pass those savings on to travellers. However, we see no signs from the industry regulators that they are willing to help us in this task; in fact, it appears that barriers are being imposed on the development of tourism and connectivity. This is a critical area for a country like Chile and a continent like South America, where distances are vast and often cannot be covered by other forms of transport. Ésta es una selección para sumergirse en este desconocido y sorprendente trozo del Norte Chico chileno. / Taking Copiapó, in Chile’s Atacama Region, as a base of operations, there are a host of historical sites, geographical wonders, solitary beaches and otherworldly landscapes for visitors to discover. Here is a selection of the best places to immerse yourself in one of Chile’s most fascinating areas: the “Norte Chico”.

MUSEO REGIONAL DE ATACAMA

La ruta de la minería

Cualquier visita a Copiapó debiera partir por uno de sus mayores hitos histórico-culturales: el Museo Regional (Atacama 98; MuseodeAtacama.cl). Ubicado a pasos de la Alameda de la ciudad, este lugar repasa la historia de la Región de Atacama, con objetos recolectados de las culturas Huentelauquén, Molle y Diaguita, algunas reliquias de la Guerra del Pacífico y, una de sus principales atracciones, la Cápsula Fénix: con la que se rescató a los 33 mineros de la mina San José. Para seguir con esta temática, otro lugar que vale la visita es el Museo Mineralógico de Copiapó (Museo Mineralógico: Colipí esq. Rodríguez s/n; tel. +56/96589 5566), que inició el explorador Polaco Ignacio Domeyko y que contiene alrededor de 14 mil piezas, incluidos restos de meteoritos caídos en el desierto de Atacama.

ATACAMA REGIONAL MUSEUM The Mining Trail No visit to Copiapó would be complete without seeing its most important cultural and historical landmark: the Regional Museum (Atacama 98; MuseodeAtacama.cl). Located just a few steps from the city’s main drag, this institution covers the Atacama Region’s history in full, exhibiting artefacts from the Huentelauquén, Molle and Diaguita cultures, relics from the War of the Pacific and, one of the main attractions, the Phoenix Capsule: Used to rescue the 33 trapped miners from the depths of the San José mine. Following along the same theme, another place that’s worth a visit is the Copiapó Mineralogical Museum (Museo Mineralógico: on the corner of Colipí and Rodríguez; tel. +56/96589 5566), which was founded by Polish explorer Ignacio Domeyko and houses around 14 thousand pieces, including the remains of meteorites fallen in the Atacama Desert.

La historia de Copiapó Copiapó tuvo un glorioso pasado cuando se descubrió el mineral de plata de Chañarcillo, en 1832. Ese esplendor explica que hoy existan lugares como la Plaza Prat, donde se reúnen varios restoranes, tiendas de artesanía y edificios históricos como la Catedral, que fue construida entre 1840 y 1851 por el arquitecto inglés William Rogers en estilo neoclásico. En el centro también hay que conocer la Locomotora Copiapó, que encabezó el primer ferrocarril que circuló en Chile, aunque solo funcionó entre 1851 y 1858. Este Monumento Nacional se puede ver en la Universidad de Atacama (Copayapu 485). Finalmente, esencial es caminar por la Alameda Manuel Antonio Matta, avenida flanqueada por añosos árboles que conduce a sitios históricos como la Cripta de los Héroes del Batallón de los Héroes, el monumento a Juan Godoy –descubridor del mineral de plata de Chañarcillo–, la antigua casa de Empleados de Ferrocarriles y la iglesia de San Francisco, construida en 1872.

OLD TOWN The history of Copiapó Copiapó had a glorious past thanks to the discovery of a seam of silver in Chañarcillo in 1832. This opulence explains why today there are places such as Plaza Prat and the Cathedral, where there are several restaurants, handicraft stalls and historical buildings such as the cathedral itself: a neo-classical temple that was built between 1840 and 1851 by English architect William Rogers. The city centre is also home to the locomotive “Copiapó”, which was the first engine used on a railway in Chile (although it only ran from 1851 to 1858). It is now a National Monument and can be visited at the Universidad de Atacama (Copayapu 485). Finally, you can’t leave without walking down Alameda Manuel Antonio Matta, the main street lined by ancient trees that links up historical sites such as the Tomb of the Heroes of the Battalion of Heroes, the monument to Juan Godoy -who discovered the silver at Chañarcillo-, the old Rail Workers’ Lodgings and the church of San Francisco, built in 1872.

These are the largest sand dunes in Chile, towering out of the desert to an amazing 1,660m.a.s.l. This makes it an ideal area for driving jeeps and sandboarding; indeed, the area has been selected several times as a Dakar Rally stage. The dunes are not far from Copiapó, along the road out to the Galleguillos Mine, although finding them can be tricky so it’s best to go with someone who knows the area and has a good GPS, especially if you want to tackle the dunes in a vehicle. One of the best ideas is to wait until sundown when the low light plays across the sand and makes for some spectacular photographs. Ercio Mettifogo, from the Puna de Atacama company (tel. +56/99051 3202; punadeatacama.com), is an expert guide for Copiapó and the rest of the region.

Las Dunas del Medanoso fueron escenario habitual de rally Dakar en Chile. The Medanoso dunes have hosted stages on the Dakar Rally in Chile on several occasions.

Éstas son las dunas más altas de Chile, tanto que en su punto más alto se alcanzan 1.660 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Por ese atractivo, el lugar fue varias veces escenario del rally Dakar, porque es ideal para jeepear (también se hace sandboard). La duna está cerca de Copiapó, por el camino que va hacia la mina Galleguillos, aunque para encontrarla se recomienda ir con alguien que conozca y que tenga buen manejo de navegación con GPS, sobre todo si se pretende desafiar las dunas en vehículo. Lo ideal, además, es ir al atardecer, cuando por la luz del sol se logran las mejores fotografías. You don’t have to look very far: the coasts of the Atacama Region are home to the most photogenic beaches in mainland Chile. They are all situated around an hour or so from Copiapó. Caldera cultural

El puerto de Caldera es otra parada esencial. Aquí también se respira historia: en la zona hay importantes restos paleontológicos y sitios como el Museo Casa Tornini (Paseo Gana 210, Caldera; casatornini.cl). Esta antigua casa de veraneo de la familia Tornini hoy es un museo y centro cultural donde se realizan visitas guiadas que permiten conocer la historia de la ciudad y de los inmigrantes italianos que se establecieron aquí durante la época del mineral de plata de Chañarcillo, a fines del siglo 19. La casa en sí es un espectáculo, con muebles y decoración de época, todo muy bien conservado por los propios familiares. Desde aquí también se organizan distintos recorridos turísticos y culturales, que llevan a ver pinturas rupestres o los vestigios del antiguo Camino del Inca que pasaba por la zona. 16

The port of Caldera is another must-see for visitors to the region. You can feel the history here: there are significant paleontological sites in the area, and also places such as the Casa Tornini Museum (Paseo Gana 210, Caldera; casatornini.cl). The Tornini family’s old summerhouse is today a museum and cultural centre where visitors can take guided tours to understand the city’s history, as well as that of the Italian immigrants who arrived here at the end of the 19th century. The house itself is a sight to behold, with furniture and decor of the period that’s been perfectly preserved by the family. From here, you can also take a number of different cultural tours, taking in rock art or the remains of the ancient Inca trail that traversed the region.

MINA SAN JOSÉ

El refugio de los 33 En las afueras de Copiapó, la famosa Mina San José – donde estuvieron atrapados los mineros– se ha convertido en un hito turístico de la zona. Actualmente, este lugar está convertido en un parque manejado por Sernatur y lo atiende uno de los 33 mineros, Jorge Galleguillos (conviene contactarlo previamente para una visita guiada por él, al mail jhgalleguillos@live.cl o tel. +56/98990 0593). El lugar se llama “Centro Interpretativo” y se trata de una construcción de contenedores blancos con paneles solares, donde hay fotos y videos que muestran la jornada de rescate y la repercusión mediática del suceso. Como está en altura, desde aquí se puede conocer – imaginariamente, porque no queda nada– el lugar donde estuvieron las 33 banderas chilenas, el Campamento Esperanza, la zona por donde salieron los mineros, el hospital y el helipuerto (que ya no existen).

SAN JOSÉ MINE The Shelter of the 33 On the outskirts of Copiapó, the famous San José –where the 33 miners were trapped for weeks- has become a big tourist draw. Currently, the site works as a park run by Sernatur (a government body), and visitors are met by one of the 33, Jorge Galleguillos (it’s worth getting in touch personally if you want to guarantee a tour given by the man himself, jhgalleguillos@live.cl or call +56/98990 0593). The visitors’ centre is built out of white shipping containers with solar panels, where there are photographs of the rescue and videos showing the day the men were pulled up from the shelter and the media circus surrounding the events. As the site is above the area where everything took place, you can look out over -and imagine, because there is nothing there anymore- the place where the 33 Chilean flags flew, Camp Hope where family members waited for news, the site of extraction, the hospital and heliport (which are no longer there).

“Quiero tener vida más allá de la pega y siento que ese descanso también hace bien creativamente (…) Necesito empezar a darme espacios”

ste ha sido un año de cerrar ciclos y abrir otros nuevos para Francisco Melo: en febrero cumplió 50 años y, al mismo tiempo, rechazó renovar su contrato con TVN, donde llevaba más de dos décadas trabajando. A cambio, decidió firmar con Mega y volver a estar bajo las órdenes de la directora María Eugenia Recoret, además de reencontrarse con actores que ya conocía. Así, hoy se le ve como uno de los tres protagonistas de “Sres. Papis”, la teleserie nocturna en la que interpreta a un hombre separado que rehace su vida sentimental y es nuevamente padre, que ha logrado buenas cifras de audiencia. Melo, egresado de Teatro de la Universidad de Chile, el cuarto de cinco hermanos, que partió como protegido de los directores Fernando González y Alfredo Castro y que viene haciendo teleseries desde 1994, es el actor más conocido de Chile –según la encuesta Adimark de comienzos de año– y su salida de la estación estatal fue un temblor en la industria televisiva: –Tuve muchas reuniones y acuerdos con ejecutivos que luego se fueron del canal (TVN), y todo volvía foja cero, o me sacaban de proyectos que me habían ofrecido. Era tal el caos en TVN que llegó un punto en el que dije: “Muchas gracias, lo intenté, pero ya no puedo más”. Estaba demasiado incómodo para seguir, no sabía por dónde podía aportar, entonces lo mejor era un cambio. –¿El canal te ofreció quedarte? ¿Cómo ves el futuro de su área dramática? –Me ofreció, pero ya no era el momento, necesitaba moverme. Hoy están con un nuevo proyecto dramático,

For Francisco Melo, this has been a year of tying up loose ends and striking out on new paths: he turned 50 in February and, at the same time, decided not to renew his contract with TVN, where he had worked for more than a decade. Instead, he moved to Mega to team up once again with director María Eugenia Rencoret and a host of other actors he had worked with previously. Today he is among the leading actors in “Sres. Papis”, a late-night soap where he plays a character going through a separation and rebuilding his love life after becoming a father again. So far the viewing figures are impressive. Melo, a Theatre graduate from Universidad de Chile, is the fourth of five siblings, and began his career as the protégé of directors Fernando González and Alfredo Castro. His work in soaps began back in 1994, and has led him to become the most famous actor in Chile according to an Adimark survey taken at the start of the year. Indeed, his decision to leave TVN sent shockwaves through the industry: –I had a load of meetings and came to agreements with executives who then left the channel (TVN), and so I kept going back to square one, or they took me off projects I had been offered. It was such a mess that I got to the point of saying: “Thanks a lot; I tried, but I can’t do this anymore”. It was so uncomfortable there, and I didn’t know what more I could do, so the best thing was a change. –Did they offer you the chance to stay? How do you see the future for soaps at TVN? –They made me an offer, but it didn’t feel right, I had to leave. They have started out on a new

Y ahora que estoy fuera no me corresponde hablar de su área dramática, trabajé muchos años ahí y espero que se recupere, porque además le hace muy bien a la industria que haya áreas de ficción con capacidad para competir y desarrollar propuestas. –“Sres. Papis” explora el género dramedy, que mezcla drama y comedia. ¿Cómo te has sentido tocando esas dos teclas? –Las tres historias están bien marcadas y la de Julián (Simón Pesutic) es una tragedia, realmente; la de Ignacio (Jorge Zabaleta) es una mixtura y la mía se mueve más en la comedia, pero con toques de drama. project with their soaps, and have screened a few. But I am out of there now so I don’t want to comment. I spent a long time there and I hope they can get back to where they were, because it is good for the industry that there is a level of competition in dramatic series and that new ideas come forward. –“Sres. Papis” delves into the genre of dramedy, mixing drama and comedy. What has it been like to blend the two? –The three storylines are well defined and Julián’s (Simón Pesutic) is truly tragic; Ignacio’s (Jorge Zabaleta) is more of a mix and mine is certainly more comedic, but there is a little drama there. It’s nice to move between the two, kind of channel surfing between your emotions. It’s also great that the comedy comes from scenes that are realistic. It isn’t

estado a otro, el placer del zapping, que acá es a nivel de las emociones. Me gusta, también, que la comedia sea con escenas que podrían ser reales. No es farsesca, algo a lo que le tenía miedo: acá eso se ataja y aunque lleva las cosas a una situación límite, no llegan a ser absurdas. Además, es interesante cómo estas tres historias podrían funcionar muy bien de manera independiente. Eso la hace bastante atractiva y diferente a lo habitual. –Se bromea mucho con que siempre haces escenas sexuales en las teleseries. ¿Sientes que te habías quedado estancado en un personaje así de reconocible? –Fue una coincidencia graciosa, anecdótica. Pero es más bien un mito, porque en la última teleserie que había hecho, “La poseída”, no hice ninguna escena sexual. Coincidió que en “Sitiados”, “Vuelve temprano” y en “Los 30” sí pasó, pero no son más que tres o cuatro veces; no es que sea parte de mi contrato (risas). Sí creo que me habían tocado personajes más dramáticos, y ahora he vuelto a la comedia, que echaba de menos. –En el último tiempo en TVN tuviste la oportunidad de incursionar como conductor en programas como “Algo habrán hecho” y “La ruta”. ¿Es una veta en la que quieres insistir? –Si aparece un proyecto en Mega que culturalmente me parezca atractivo, bienvenido sea. Pero se trata de proyectos puntuales, yo no siento que sea conductor, es una participación especial, más bien. Pero si puedo aportar en algún programa en la línea de lo que fue “Algo habrán hecho”, donde había una búsqueda de identidad local, de todas maneras me gustaría.

It’s a break from the norm. –There’s a running joke out there that you always do sex scenes in soaps. Do you think that you might have become typecast in that kind of role? –It was a funny coincidence, really. But it’s a myth, because in the last soap I did, “La Poseída”, there were no sex scenes. It just so happened that in “Sitiados”, “Vuelve Temprano” and “Los 30” I had sex scenes. But three or four times in total. It isn’t as if it’s in my contract (laughs)! I suppose I had worked a lot on the more dramatic side of things, but now I am back with comedy, and I missed it. –Towards the end of your run on TVN you had the chance to work on programmes such as “Algo habrán hecho” and “La ruta”. Would you like to do more work in those areas? –If a project comes up on Mega that is interesting and culturally oriented, then great. But these are one offs. I don’t think I am much of a presenter, more like a special guest. But if I can contribute again with a programme such as “Algo habrán hecho”, where we were looking to identify what it means to be Chilean, I would love to. –After filming the soap, you have no other projects scheduled for the rest of the year, is that something you did to give yourself a rest?

–Tras grabar la telenovela, en el último trimestre no tiene proyectos agendados, ¿ha sido una decisión pensada la de descansar? –Ya a mis 50 quiero ser menos trabajólico. Partí el año con un par de obras de teatro, pero como actor quiero empezar a tener ocio. Esta obligación de estar en un proyecto y ya estar pensando en el siguiente es agotador. Es algo sin parar, agobiante, y soy bien agradecido de las propuestas y de lo que me toca, pero debo reconocer que mis tiempos de ocio y proyectos personales le hacen bien a mi cabeza. –¿Algún proyecto personal en específico? –Quiero tener vida más allá de la pega y siento que ese descanso también hace bien creativamente. Quienes me conocen no me creen, me dicen “ver para creer”, pero necesito empezar a darme espacios. No tengo ningún plan en específico y de eso se trata: de no tenerlo y solo disfrutar.

The obligation to always be involved in something and to be thinking about what is coming next is tiring. You never stop, and it overwhelms you, but I am thankful for the chances I have had. However, right now, I have to recognise that free time and personal projects will be good for me. –Do you have a specific personal project in mind? –I want to have a life beyond work, and I think that a rest will be good for my creativity. People who know me don’t believe it. They say “seeing is believing”, but I need some time and space. I don’t have anything specific in the pipeline, and that’s what it’s about: just going with the flow and enjoying life.

or muchos años Chile y Perú han mantenido una disputa por la denominación sobre el nombre, origen e identidad del pisco. Es más, una reciente investigación, realizada por el historiador Pablo Lacoste, determinó que el nombre “pisco” tiene sus orígenes en nuestro país, como queda demostrado en el libro “El Pisco nació en Chile”: un trabajo que da cuenta de que el nombre de este aguardiente de uva fue registrado formalmente por primera vez en 1733 en Chile. Pero, más allá de la polémica, el controvertido destilado de uva hoy está protegido con una denominación de origen exclusiva para las regiones de Atacama y Coquimbo. En la práctica, las variedades de uvas permitidas para su producción pertenecen al grupo de cepas blancas y rosadas aromáticas como la Pastilla, la Torontel, la Moscatel de Alejandría o Italia, y las menos aromáticas y austeras, como la Pedro Jiménez y Moscatel de Austria. Desde sus comienzos, el proceso de elaboración del pisco consiste en un vino base que se destila en alambiques de cobre. Durante este proceso se define el estilo del alcohol y, posteriormente, pasa a un período de reposo en tanques de acero o en fudres de raulí –decisión que queda al parecer de cada productor– para afinarlo en sabor y aromas, definiendo su categoría. Por último, antes de elegir y beber un buen pisco, hay que agregar que existen tres estilos en Chile: el “transparente”, que es un alcohol joven e ideal para la coctelería; el “de guarda”, que establece un período inferior a 180 días en barricas de roble –lo que le aporta complejidad y versatilidad– y el “envejecido”: un pisco criado en barricas de roble americano o francés, que resulta en un alcohol para beber por sí solo.

For many years, Chile and Peru have been embroiled in a dispute over the rights to the name, designated origin and even identity of pisco. To add more fuel to the fire, a recent investigation carried out by historian Pablo Lacoste found that the name “pisco” has its roots on our side of the border, a claim he makes in his book “El Pisco nació en Chile”: his research shows that the name of this grape spirit was first formally registered in Chile in 1733. But this is all mostly academic now, as in practice the spirit has a designated denomination of origin for the Chilean regions of Atacama and Coquimbo. The varieties of grape permitted for the production of pisco come from the family of aromatic white and pink grapes and include Pastilla, Torontés, Muscat of Alexandria or Italia, and the less aromatic and more austere Pedro Jiménez and Muscat of Austria. Ever since its beginnings, the pisco-making process has consisted of distilling wine in copper stills. The style of the spirit is defined by the techniques used and, later on, when it is passed into steel vats or oak barrels -a decision left up to the discretion of each producer- the flavour and nose of the pisco are refined, finally placing it in a particular category. Now, before choosing and drinking a good pisco, it is worth noting that there are three styles in Chile: the “transparent”, which is a young spirit, perfect for cocktails; the “reserve”, which is kept in oak barrels for a maximum of 180 days -providing complexity and versatility-; and the “aged”: piscos matured in American and French oak casks, resulting in a spirit that can be drunk on its own.

Reservado / Valle del Limarí (40%) Elaborado por Viña Miguel Torres con especial colaboración del equipo de Villafranca del Penedés (Cataluña), que elabora el Brandy Torres, tiene su raíz en los suelos calcáreos únicos del norte de Chile. Trae consigo el espíritu de aventura bajo una botella confeccionada especialmente para este pisco, con un cierre de corcho tipo Bartop –de fácil apertura– y una etiqueta verde lima, que presenta la historia del Gobernador de Ovalle Felipe Margutt Donaire, rindiendo honor a la Independencia de Chile. Su mezcla es en un 50 por ciento Moscatel de Alejandría y 50 por ciento Moscatel Rosada, que han pasado por una destilación en alambiques de cobre. A product of the Miguel Torres winery in partnership with the team from Villafranca del Penedés (Catalonia), who produce Brandy Torres, this pisco is born out of the unique limestone soils of northern Chile. El Gobernador invokes the spirit of adventure, and is sold in a specially made bottle with a bartop cork stopper (for easy opening). Its lime green label tells the story of Felipe Margutt Donaire, Governor of Ovalle, and pays homage to Chile’s independence struggle. This pisco is a 50-50 blend of Muscat of Alexandria and Pink Muscat grape wines that have been distilled in copper stills. The result is a delicate spirit with floral and citrus aromas. It’s easy to drink and is perfect for cocktails or to spice up a flambéed pudding. Available at supermarkets for CLP 7,500.

Es un destilado artesanal hecho con las nobles cepas Moscatel de Austria, Rosada, Alejandría y Amarilla, que crecen y maduran bajo el sol de Atacama. Su singular elaboración sigue guardando el riguroso proceso de elaboración traído por su maestro destilador, el mallorquín Bartolomé Mulet. La vinificación de este pisco se produce en contacto con el hollejo y pulpa del grano, sin ningún tipo de intervención, en lagares de cemento. Luego, se destila en un alambique del año 1800 que cuenta con doble rectificación. Para condensar los vapores del alcohol pisquero, se utiliza el mismo vino que posteriormente será destilado, lo que lo hace único en su género. Su crianza pasa por barricas de roble americano por dos años, aportándole diversas capas aromáticas con un final largo y salino. Ideal para acompañar con unos camarones de río a la parrilla. Unique and evergreen, Tagua Tagua Park is the perfect refuge for those looking to enjoy nature in its purest form, away from the mainstream tourist spots. In fact, visitors will be lucky enough to walk in solitude through some of the lushest forests Chile has to offer: Around 3,000 hectares of Protected Private Parkland –ceded to Universidad Mayor by Chile’s Ministry for National Property to encourage special-interest tourism the conservation of the area’s biodiversity- located on the southern shores of Lake Tagua Tagua in the Puelo River basin. There are ecosystems here that can only be found in the south of Chile, with ancient trees like the millennia-old alerces and centuries-old mañíos and coihues. The park is also home to crystalline lagoons, rivers, waterfalls and a network of wetlands hosting a rich diversity of flora and fauna –many of which are endemic-, including many species of fungi, moss, lichen and bracken. All this and more awaits the visitor who braves the parks network of hiking trails. There are 18km of trails in total, and they were especially designed to reduce the impact of human visitors to an absolute minimum. For the same reason, the route includes three bridges -one a 40m suspension bridge- and over a kilometre of walkways passing through waterways and other delicate areas. Before heading out on the trails, hikers must register at the information centre, which provides all the details necessary to be able to properly enjoy the park within the timeframe and physical ability of each visitor. Although hikers can go it alone in the park, the option of a guided tour comes highly recommended for those looking to understand more about the flora and fauna of the area, the dynamics of forest life and all its hidden secrets.

Aunque se puede recorrer de manera independiente, la opción de caminar con guías del parque es muy recomendable para quienes busquen conocer los detalles de la flora y la fauna, las dinámicas del bosque y los rincones secretos de la zona. Ahora, si bien las caminatas por el día permiten dar una buena mirada a la diversidad local, dormir en el parque es una excelente alternativa para quienes busquen una desconexión total de la ciudad. Una primera alternativa es dormir en el refugio Alerces (cuesta 12.000 pesos por persona por noche). A 535 metros sobre el nivel del mar, se encuentra a unos 6,5 kilómetros del centro de informaciones ubicado sobe la ribera del lago Tagua Tagua; en un trayecto que toma aproximadamente 4 horas. Con capacidad para 20 personas y cocina a leña, se trata de un lugar que suele estar sin más pasajeros y, por lo mismo, es perfecto para disfrutar de la naturaleza. Más adentro en el bosque, otra opción es el remoto refugio Quetrus (cuesta 60.000 pesos por noche para dos

It is located some 535m.a.s.l, around 6.5km from the information centre on the banks of the River Tagua Tagua, and can be reached in approximately 4 hours. There’s enough space for 20 people and a wood burning stove, although there is rarely anyone to be found here, making it the perfect place to get back in touch with nature. Deeper into the forest, another option for sleeping over is the Quetrus shelter (CLP 60,000 per night for two people, CLP 20,000 for each additional person). It stands by a picturesque lagoon and can hold up to eight people – rented privately. Rondando los 3.000 metros de altitud, la caminata desde el sector de los petroglifos de Yerbas Buenas hasta el Valle del Arcoíris es –por la aclimatación progresiva que se debe hacer a la altura– una de las mejores alternativas para agendar al día siguiente de la llegada a San Pedro de Atacama. Después de unos 45 minutos en auto con rumbo hacia Calama, el viaje sigue por el camino asfaltado que conduce al poblado de Río Grande. En plena Cordillera de Domeyko, la caminata de poco más de 8 kilómetros –que, en promedio, toma 3 horas y 30 minutos– comienza en el sorprendente Yerbas Buenas (la entrada cuesta 3.000 pesos por persona): un sitio arqueológico cada 100

vez más famoso por sus paredes de piedra grabadas con decenas de manifestaciones de arte rupestre. Uno de los conjuntos de petroglifos más importantes de toda la región, el recorrido por el lugar –que toma algo más de 30 minutos observando dibujos de animales, astros y seres humanos– es un viaje a los tiempos en que los indígenas reinaban en la zona. Sin mucha información sobre los dibujos desplegada en el lugar, es esencial un guía que sepa del tema para trasladarse a la época en que el sitio era ocupado como refugio por los atacameños en sus travesías por el desierto. Luego, la caminata prosigue por el curso seco de un río con destino al Valle del Arcoíris y, desde los 3.095 metros de altitud, en 4 kilómetros hay que subir hasta los 3.311 metros. Más allá del esfuerzo, ésta es la etapa más entretenida

VALLE DEL ARCOIRIS / The Colour of the Desert As this trail will take you through a site located around 3000m.a.s.l, passing rock paintings at Yerbas Buenas and up to the Valle del Arcoiris (Rainbow Valley), where the altitude can be a factor, it's best to rest for a day in San Pedro before heading out. After a 45-minute drive towards Calama, the trip continues on to a paved road and reaches a town called Río Grande. At the heart of the Domeyko Mountains, this trail of little more than 8km –which on average takes around 3 and a half hours to complete- begins at the stunning Yerbas Buenas (entry fee costs CLP 3,000 per person): an archaeological site that is becoming more and more famous thanks to the dozens of rock paintings it houses. The site is one of the most important examples of rock art in the region, and a walk around Yerbas Buenas will last approximately 30 minutes. During that time, you’ll see drawings of animals, celestial bodies and humans -it’s a trip back in time and a glimpse of an ancestral culture. As there is little information

de la excursión, pues se camina –idealmente con la ayuda de bastones– por huellas marcadas por burros o simplemente por la ladera de cerros hasta comenzar a ver el colorido final. Con tonos rojizos, verdes, blancos y amarillos combinados en curiosas formas, los últimos 2 kilómetros de excursión son un verdadero espectáculo, pues se desciende con la vista sobre el Valle del Arcoíris, siempre enmarcado por el azul profundo del cielo de San Pedro.

SALAR CAPUR

Dimensión desconocida Después de al menos un día acostumbrándose a la altura en el pueblo, esta caminata que va desde el salar de Capur hasta el salar de Talar (conocido también como salar Aguas Calientes II) es un excelente ejercicio para aclimatarse un poco más a la altura –en promedio, se camina a los 4.100 metros de altitud–, sobre todo cuando se está 102

pensando en subir a una cumbre por sobre los 5.000 metros en los días siguientes como el cerro Toco o el volcán Láscar por ejemplo. Luego, más allá de los aspectos técnicos, se trata de unos de los trekkings más sorprendentes –y solitarios– que se pueden hacer en los alrededores San Pedro. Con nieve en invierno y la posibilidad cierta de tormentas en verano, la primavera es la mejor época para caminar los 10 kilómetros de ruta, que con calma toman alrededor de cuatro horas. Todo comienza a un par de kilómetros del camino que conduce al paso internacional Sico, después de casi dos horas de automóvil –pasando por Toconao y Socaire– desde San Pedro. Entonces, la caminata empieza con un suave descenso con vista al hipnótico salar de Capur. En el sendero se puede apreciar la vegetación propia del altiplano, como el coirón o la chachacoma, y también la fauna, con vizcachas y vicuñas. Tras 45 minutos ya se está junto

al salar, habitado en primavera por aves como gaviotas andinas y flamencos. Después de bordear el salar por casi una hora, queda la parte más exigente: de 3.950 metros de altitud hay que subir a 4.175 en menos de 4 kilómetros de dura caminata, sobre todo por el viento que drásticamente hace descender la sensación térmica y que suele soplar fuerte en ese sector del trayecto. De todos modos, hay que destacar que el esfuerzo vale la pena, porque el final del paseo regala una de las vistas más espectacular de la zona, con el color turquesa del salar Aguas Calientes al fondo y –con algo de suerte– con vicuñas y suris como protagonistas de la postal.

CERRO TOCO

Rumbo a la cumbre Los 5.604 metros del Cerro Toco –un antiguo volcán hoy dormido– son el mejor desafío para poner a prueba a los aficionados al trekking. Porque, aunque no

It’s a tough stretch, but it’s also the best part of the trail as you walk -ideally with the aid of hiking poles- along an old donkey trail or up the slope of the hill until you get your first glimpse of the colourful prize that awaits you. The red, green, white and yellow tones combine in fascinating ways to create shapes on the hillsides, and the final 2km of the trek are breathtaking: you are rewarded with a full view over the Valle del Arcoiris, which is offset perfectly by the deep blue of the Atacama sky. SALAR CAPUR / The Twilight Zone After at least a day of altitude acclimatisation in San Pedro, this trail that will take you from the Capur Salt Flats to the Talar Salt Flats (also known as the Aguas Calientes II salt flats) is a great way to acclimatise further –on average, you will be trekking at 4,100m.a.s.l-, especially if you are looking to climb a peak of more than 5,000m in the following days (such as Cerro Toco, or the Lascar Volcano, for example). After that stretch, besides the technical aspects, this becomes one of the most stunning –and loneliest- trails you can do near San Pedro. As it often snows in winter and storms are almost guaranteed in summer, spring is the best season to tackle these 10km that, walking steadily, will take you around 4 hours to complete. It all begins a couple of kilometres from the road out to the Sico border crossing, after around a two-hour drive from San Pedro via Toconao and Socaire. From there, the trail begins to drop slowly down towards the hypnotic Capur salt flat. The path is a great place for visitors to properly appreciate the plant life on the high plain, such as “coiron” or “chachacoma”, and fauna including vizcachas and vicuñas. After 45 minutes you’ll reach the salt flat, which is inhabited by Andean gulls and flamingos. An hour’s walk around the rim of the salt flat leads you to the most demanding section of the trail: from 3,950m of altitude, the path climbs to 4,175 in under 4km of tough terrain and high winds that produce a marked windchill effect along this stretch of the trail. se trata de una alta montaña ni nada parecido, no cualquiera debiese tomar esta expedición menos sin un par de días de aclimatación previa en el pueblo. Antes, lo ideal es hacer una caminata por sobre los 4.000 metros –como la del salar de Capur al salar Talar, por ejemplo– y, de no presentar complicaciones, largarse a conquistar la cumbre del Toco. A 60 kilómetros de San Pedro, el viaje hasta el punto donde habitualmente comienzan las excursiones dura poco más de una hora por el camino internacional que conduce al paso Jama. Ya en la partida, se observan los vestigios de una antigua minera que hasta hace un par de décadas se dedicaba a la extracción de azufre, material que luego era utilizado en las tareas de extracción de cobre de la mina Chuquicamata. Desde el mismo punto, además, pero mirando hacia el sur, se ven las decenas de antenas del proyecto radioastronómico Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). Ideal para hacer en primavera –en invierno se aconseja el uso de crampones, piolet y equipo técnico para bajas temperaturas–, la ascensión desde los 5.280 metros hasta los 5.604 se cubre en poco más de 1.600 metros de distancia y toma alrededor de dos horas a paso seguro, dependiendo siempre de la solidez del grupo. Técnicamente, quienes saben de la materia aseguran que se trata de una montaña sencilla, y que además del uso de botas de trekking y ropa adecuada – primera capa, polar, cortaviento y, ojalá, una parca de pluma en la mochila en caso de que sople mucho viento en la cumbre–, solo hace falta la aclimatación previa para aventurarse. Y, desde luego, el esfuerzo vale la pena: cuando la cumbre está a pocos metros, la satisfacción de haber superado el desafío es aún más reconfortante con la maravillosa panorámica que regala la cumbre del cerro Toco. ¡Click!

any case, it’s worth pointing out that the arduous trekking is worth it, because waiting for intrepid hikers at the end of the trail is one of the most spectacular views in the Atacama Desert: the turquoise hue of the Aguas Calientes salt flat and, if you’re lucky, vicuñas and suris stalking the plains. CERRO TOCO / Up to the Peak The dormant Volcano Cerro Toco’s 5604m are one of the most demanding challenges for trekking enthusiasts in Chile. Although this isn’t anywhere close to being considered a big mountain, it’s not for the feint hearted and requires at least a couple of days for acclimatisation. Before you attempt the summit, it’s best to head out on some trails above 4000m, such as the Capur salt flats, for example, and see if they bring up any complications. The spot from which expeditions usually begin is around 60km from San Pedro, or an hour’s drive along the international highway to the Jama border crossing. Along the first section of the trail, you can see the vestiges of an old mining settlement that was, until a few decades back, extracting sulphur in the region, a material that was used in copper mining at Chuquicamata. Likewise, if you turn your gaze south, you can see the dozens of antennae belonging to the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observatory. The trail is best tackled during spring -in winter you’ll have to use crampons, an ice axe and low-temperature clothing- and climbs from 5,280 to 5,604m in little over 1.6km, taking around two hours to complete at a steady pace - depending on the fitness of the group. Technically, this is by all accounts a simple mountain to summit and, besides walking boots and clothing –first layer, fleece, windbreaker and, ideally, feather-lined jacket if the peak is particularly windy-, the only real complication is the altitude. And, of course, the effort is worth it: When you’re just a few paces from the summit, the satisfaction of having overcome the challenge is even more of a comfort than the glorious view from the peak of Cerro Toco. l próximo 4 de octubre de 2017 marcará los cien años del natalicio de Violeta Parra, una de las artistas chilenas más importantes de la historia, nacida en la precordillera de la Región del Biobío. Y, para conmemorarlo, se han programado decenas de actividades en su memoria, que comienzan este mes. La idea, como dice el ministro de Cultura Ernesto Ottone, es convertir el centenario de su nacimiento en una gran fiesta nacional: –Queremos celebrar a Violeta, uno de los pilares fundamentales de la cultura popular chilena, queremos difundir su vasta y diversa obra y esparcir su legado en toda la ciudadanía, pero especialmente entre las nuevas generaciones. Así, música, danza, exposiciones y ciclos audiovisuales, entre otras expresiones artísticas, serán algunas de las actividades programadas. 4 de octubre de 2016 / Plaza de la Constitución / Santiago “Canto para una Semilla” del Ballet Folclórico Nacional (Bafona) –montaje basado en las décimas de Violeta Parra–, marcará el inicio de las celebraciones. DANCE FOR VIOLETA 4th October, 2016 / Plaza de la Constitución / Santiago “Canto para una Semilla”, from the National Folk Ballet (Bafona) –based on Violeta Parra’s ten-line poems-, will mark the start of the year’s celebrations. SKY EN LA RECTA FINAL AL LOW COST SKY moves into the final stages of rolling out low-cost air travel Durante un año SKY se ha preparado para desplegar el modelo low cost por primera vez en Chile y el Cono Sur. La compañía ha dividido el proceso en tres etapas que han significado un cambio importante en la forma de viajar, y que ahora se apresta a llegar a su fase final. Bajar en más de un 35 por ciento las tarifas de un año para otro fue la primera etapa de esta transformación que remeció el mercado aéreo, haciendo caer sustancialmente los precios para volar en los destinos donde operamos. Gracias a este anuncio el valor de los tickets aéreos experimentó una baja nunca antes vista para vuelos domésticos e internacionales, obligando a toda la industria a reevaluar sus estrategias comerciales. A mediados de año dimos otro paso significativo el cual denominamos la etapa de “flexibilidad”, que consistió en eliminar todas las restricciones tarifas propias de las aerolíneas tradicionales y comenzar a vender tickets One Way o por tramo, lo que le permitió a miles de personas poder combinar los medios de transporte, salir por un aeropuerto y volver con otro, o decidir en el destino la fecha de retorno; entre otras características. En los próximos días daremos el último paso de esta implementación agregando todo lo relacionado con la elección y la libertad que tendrán las personas para volar con un servicio adaptado a las necesidades de cada cliente, donde los propios pasajeros serán quienes decidirán qué elementos agregar a su vuelo por primera vez en la historia de la aviación comercial chilena. Esta revolución tiene como objetivo lograr que más personas puedan volar. Es por eso que a contar de noviembre “desvestiremos” nuestras tarifas para darles el poder a los clientes de elegir cómo viajar, ahorrando dinero con la amabilidad que nos caracteriza.

For the past year, SKY has been making the necessary preparations for rolling out the low-cost model for the first time in the Southern Cone. The company has divided the process into three distinct stages that have each meant a significant change to the way people fly, and is now moving into the final phase of the plan. Lowering tariffs by 35% from one year to the next was the first step, and the effects shook the commercial aviation industry to its foundations as prices fell substantially on flights to destinations where our airline operates. Indeed, it was thanks to this announcement that ticket prices underwent an unprecedented fall both domestically and internationally, and the industry as a whole was forced to re-evaluate its commercial model. Around half-way through the year we took another great leap forward as we introduced our "flexibility" plan, which eliminated traditional fare and ticket restrictions, and began to sell One Way tickets, meaning thousands of people would be able to travel on combined means of transport, fly to one airport and return from another, or decide on the return date once they had arrived at their destination, among many other benefits. In the coming days we will take the final step on our journey as we add even more choice and freedom to our tickets, allowing travellers the chance to adapt their journey to their specific needs and add or remove services from their fare as they wish – another unprecedented move for the Chilean commercial aviation industry. The final goal of our revolution is to get more people up in the air. For that reason, as of November, we will be "dressing down" our tickets and allowing our customers to choose exactly how they want to fly and saving them money in our trademark friendly style.

Íbamos a la casa de mi bisabuela en vacaciones de verano. El viaje era hermoso, el ritmo del tren y su sonido. La canción Tren al sur (de Los Prisioneros) es un retrato fiel a la sensación que me producía ese viaje. —¿Norte o sur de Chile? —Soy del sur, me gusta la calidez de los braseros, de la gente, las comidas para quitarse el frío y las chimeneas para secar la ropa. —¿Ciudades o naturaleza? —Me gustan los pueblos, se puede conocer más a la gente. Mientras más grande es la ciudad, más se quiere parecer a otra ciudad más grande. —¿Museos o parques? —Cuando estaba en la universidad era un adicto a los museos y siempre me tomaba al menos un día para visitar alguno. Pero ahora siento que es mucho más rico estar en un parque. —¿Mantel largo o comida callejera? —Picadas y comida callejera. El mantel largo me hace quedar siempre con mal genio y hambre. —¿Viajar solo o acompañado? —Uf, difícil. Amo la aventura y el espacio de reflexión del viaje solo, pero viajar acompañado también es toda una experiencia, sobre todo si viajas con tu compañero(a).

—What is your first travel memory? —The trip I took with my grandmother Inés and my aunt Pati on the train to Yumbel. I was 5. We were going to my great-grandmother’s house for the summer. It was a beautiful journey, with the rhythm and sound of the train. The song “Tren al Sur” (by Los Prisioneros) is a faithful reflection of the feelings I had on that trip. —Do you prefer the north or south of Chile? —I am from the south. I like the warmth of the stoves and of the people. I like the food that keeps the cold out and the chimneys for drying clothes. —Cities or countryside? —I love small towns, as you can get to know people better. The bigger the city, the more it seems to want to be just another big city. —Museums or parks? —While I was at university, I was addicted to museums. And I always set aside a day to visit one. But these days it’s much nicer to be in a park. —Fine dining or a cheap eat? —Cheap eats and street food. Fine dining has always left me in a bad mood and hungry. —Travelling alone or with friends? —That’s a tough one. I love the adventure and the time for reflection that come with travelling alone, but travelling with friends is an experience, especially if you travel with your partner. —Where in Chile would you like to discover next? —I’ve never been to San Pedro de Atacama, so I have to go. And I would love to see Antarctica. —What’s the first thing you put in your suitcase? —A pair of comfortable walking shoes and the book I am reading.
