“ It has been wonderful to come into your college where the environment has impacted so positively upon learning. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex KG KCVO

As parents we wish our children to grow up and live full lives as happy and successful people. At Budmouth we want nothing less. More than a place of learning but a way of living, Budmouth seeks to equip young people morally, physically and academically, to make their contribution to the wider world. Officially listed as an ‘Outstanding School’ by Ofsted, Budmouth recognises that a good education is not just about examination results, but a thorough preparation for life; it is about developing character and confidence through outstanding teaching and abundant opportunities. Based on academic rigour, excellent pastoral care and an enviable activity programme we insist on hard work, exemplary behaviour and courtesy, at all times. As a very successful College we have a proud record of commitment to the highest standards and put great store in the widest possible recognition and celebration of achievement to nurture individual talents. However, the real measure of Budmouth is our students. All who visit are struck by the friendly, purposeful calm that pervades the College. This is no accident and is borne from self-disciplined, focused and appreciative young people.

Young people who are ambitious to be the best they can be, able to think for themselves, with a firmly-held moral code based on personal responsibility, respect for others and the desire to serve the wider community. I want Budmouth to become one of the most successful state schools in Britain, not just for academic achievement but for the young people we develop and the difference they make to the lives of others. Choosing the school that best suits your child and which offers them the best opportunities for development and achievement is a vital decision and we believe that here, at Budmouth College, we offer those opportunities. We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you to the College so that you can see us in action and appreciate the difference a Budmouth education makes.

JOINING BUDMOUTH

...the best for your child

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most crucial decisions you will ever have to make. The right decision will be profoundly rewarding for your child’s future. Children join us from all over the South Dorset area and annually we accept young people from up to twenty primary schools. Budmouth seeks to provide parents with as much information as possible. All receive a brochure and are encouraged to visit us and view our website. There are two Open Evenings in October when parents and children are welcome to meet staff and students.

“ The students are very proud of their College and spoke eloquently and with great respect and affection for their teachers, who they believe work very hard on their behalf. As a result, the quality of relationships is superb, behaviour is excellent.” Ofsted

Parents recognise that Budmouth provides a secure and happy learning environment. Ofsted Inspectors highlight http://bit.ly/xIwEes that our College has successfully created a supportive and caring atmosphere in which students grow and flourish. We are firmly committed to traditional values and high standards.

To ensure that children feel secure and happy in making the move we provide: Our Primary Liaison Teacher who meets with students and teachers in their primary schools. College Open Days for new students in July when they visit us, tour the campus, sample some lessons and meet their new Tutors. A special ‘Welcome Aboard Day’ in early September when new students have the campus to themselves. An introductory meeting for all parents and children with a senior member of staff where questions can be answered. FROG, our virtual learning platform which supports students in their studies and allows parents to monitor work and progress. Budm@il, a parental email service answering your questions and providing essential information throughout your child’s secondary career. A dedicated team of Peer Mentors who work with the children, helping them to settle in. Freshers’ Camp which provides a residential adventure in their first days at college allowing students to make new friends and meet many of their teachers. CARE FOR STUDENTS

...the best for your child

How a child settles into school, feels happy and secure and is encouraged will determine their success. With this in mind, the College has established a holistic approach to pastoral care which supports every student right through their secondary career. We seek to empower students to make a life for themselves that is fulfilling, enjoyable and responsible. Every youngster will meet with their Tutor before they join the College, and that Tutor will stay with them right through their secondary career. This relationship is vital as it allows the Tutor to get to know the student and establishes continuity of care. As well as their personal Tutor, every student has an Academic Tutor with whom they meet on a regular basis throughout the year to

discuss progress and review achievements. Any problem can be discussed and targets set and these are then highlighted to the relevant teaching staff. http://bit.ly/ySVDXo This process aims to enable the student to reflect and develop strong independent learning skills. The College also has teams of trained Student Mentors and Student Mediators who work with students to make them feel secure and to resolve any issues they may have. We aim to develop confident individuals and successful learners who are able to lead fulfilling lives and make a positive contribution to society. We look to extend horizons and raise aspirations by helping our students to discover their talents and interests.

BUDMOUTH WILL EQUIP ITS STUDENTS TO: Enjoy learning and achieve the highest standards in College and in life. Live a safe, healthy life by developing mental and emotional wellbeing and fostering effective and fulfilling relationships. Make decisions based on the values that underpin our society. To be active and informed citizens who make a positive contribution. To be enterprising and achieve financial security.

“ The importance of pupils’ personal development is central to the work of the school, which has successfully created a supportive and caring atmosphere in which pupils grow and flourish. Pupils are valued for their contribution to school life and there is a feeling of harmony throughout... Students receive exceptional levels of pastoral care and support for their personal development, which is outstanding. Their behaviour is excellent. Ofsted

RESULTS

...the best for your child

Academic results at Budmouth have maintained sustained improvement for over a decade. This trend continues, as staff and students work to achieve their very best. We consistently achieve results well above the county and national averages and we are very proud of our ‘value added scores’ which so clearly demonstrate our commitment to every student. Academic excellence is one of our major priorities as we want every child to achieve the best possible results; children who join

us do tend to share in the success of the college. Our results at GCSE and A level speak for themselves and the increasing number of students going on to http://bbc.in/zsTHSX Oxbridge or to study Medicine is a reflection of this success. Students are placed in the academic set which best suits their ability in different subjects. All students have academic targets which their subject teachers and progress leader review constantly. Parents, students and staff are able to monitor academic progress against individual targets. At the end of each year, the College celebrates the work of its students with Achievement Assemblies and a Prize Giving Ceremony.

RESULTS: GCSE five A*-C are currently 80% plus and consistently above the national average. ‘A’ level success rate is currently running at 99%. Post 16 Vocational course success rates are currently running at 100%. Annually over 130 students go on to university with many gaining places at Russell Group universities including Oxford and Cambridge.

Budmouth selects some of its students on ability and all children are tested on arrival to identify those with special gifts or talents. These students are taught from the beginning of Year 7 in several high ability groups. They are set ambitious targets and receive a faster pace and depth of teaching. They also have access to three sciences, three modern languages and a Gifted and Talented programme which runs across the College.

“ Standards are well above average and students make very good progress. This reflects very effective teaching and learning and excellent leadership and management.” Ofsted

FACILITIES

...the best for your child

To get the best from students it is essential that they are provided with a facility that is well equipped, functional and fit for a 21st Century education. At Budmouth we have achieved this by designing and building a campus around the needs of our students.

Our college overlooks the Fleet on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site and is undoubtedly one of the most attractive locations for a school in the country. http://bit.ly/AaG4fR Our campus comprises six specialist buildings set around a landscaped courtyard adjoining eleven acres of playing fields with ample hard standing play areas. In June 2012 an £18m state of the art teaching facility ‘The Hub’ was opened by HRH Prince Edward The Earl of Wessex. The futuristic building, based around a central high atrium, has already been nominated for several design awards and provides a fantastic learning environment for all our students. To complement The Hub, there are specialist buildings for Performing and Visual Arts, Design and Technology, Sport, Student Support and our Sixth Form. Across the campus there are abundant informal work areas, all offering WiFi access to students.

Our facilities include: 700 computers and fourteen computer suites. High speed open WiFi across the campus. Centre of Excellence for Business & Industrial Liaison. Fourteen fully equipped science laboratories. Ten D & T workshops and design studios. A sports centre, fitness suite, two gymnasia, a badminton hall, six floodlit netball courts, seven tennis courts, an Astroturf, a climbing wall and extensive playing fields. A Dance Studio, Drama Studio, Music Studio, Recording Studio and Practice Rooms. A central Resources Centre open from 7.30am until 5pm each day. A CCF headquarters building.
