Greetings from REVOLT

BLAH BLAH BLAH

PUBLISHER’S NOTE Well, looks like we made it. Wow. That was one tough Winter. Just getting thru those winter months in ‘sub-sixty’ San Diego is tough enough. Then throw in a crippling recession and a deadly Swine Flu pandemic to really test us. Some of you guys got pretty grumpy. I thought that flu thing was over, but they’re still dropping like flies in places. I sure do miss hugging, shaking hands and kissing babies. For now, I guess I’ll settle for smakin’ backs, knuckle bumps and shaking babies. Ah, you know I only kid. But, I honestly feel the worst is behind us. I think I see the economy turning around a bit. Summer is creeping up on us (a little slower for some of us living down here at the beach) But, it’s gonna get toasty warm, soon enough. Then we’ll all be back to our same ‘ol sunny San Diego dispositions. The summer is shaping up to be pretty friggin’ cool over here at Revolt. We have concerts. We have surf comps. We have road trips & travel lined up. So, where do we start? How about some bikinis? That always seems to cheer people up. This year we have definitely out done ourselves. Our crack team of professionals have put together the finest annual swimwear issue...EVER! Aaron, Kyle, Ennis, Billy & all the beautiful models have stepped up and performed a small miracle. With small budgets, crappy ‘May grey’ weather and impossible looming deadlines we all rallied together, to not only put out the RIS 2009 Swimwear Issue, but a RIS 2009 Swimwear Issue DVD (collectors edition) as well. Check it out on line at www.revoltinstyle.com Before I go, I have to invite you all down to our show at Anthology in Little Italy. 3rd Borough is having their CD release. Members of G Love & Special Sauce, Slightly Stoopid, Wu Tang & Jurrasic 5 all performed on their CD and are rumored to show. We flew in Josiah from Texas to complete the Diego Roots’ lineup. They’ll be performing for the first time in months in San Diego. Soul Eye is coming down from San Fran, and, did I mention the Fashion Show? Oh, yeah, The beautiful women of the 2009 Swimwear Issue will be on hand to model some of the amazing swimwear featured in this Issue as well as sign a few copies of the Swimwear Issue and DVDs. It’s coming up fast.. Friday May 29 at Anthology in Little Italy. (check back cover) Peace -B & L

ADVENTURE

(left) Jimmy Pouchert of Desert Highlights Canyoneering rappellin inside of the Fiery Furnace.

(right) Skull Arch inside of the “Fiery Furnace.”

The Outdoor Life Style Mecca by Lee Sammartino | Photos by Megan Gates Talking about San Diego? Nope! I am talking Moab, Utah, a community of 5,000 people that is built on a foundation of adventure, action sports, and outdoor lifestyles. With an estimated one million visitors each year, people from around the world visit this majestic place to experience what Moab has to offer. From site seeing and camping to white water rafting and canyoneering, world-class mountain biking to 4 X 4 excursions, Jeeping and rock-crawling to skydiving and rock climbing, whatever your adventure fix may be Moab has it … except surfing (sorry guys, it is in Utah). My reason for frequenting Moab? BASE jumping. Those same beautiful cliffs that are conquered by the climbers and visited by tenacious hikers are epic exit points that host BASE jumpers from every corner of the earth. This trip however, although I did get in a couple of BASE jumps, was meant to be an experience outside my normal Moab routine: wake up, hike, jump, pack, hike, jump, pack, Party… (repeat). It always baffles me when I mention Moab and people ask, “Where’s Moab? And what do you do there?” I always reply, “You’ve seen pictures of the beautiful red-rock arches, right? Well, that’s Moab!” It also baffles me that Moab is only an 11-hour drive away from San Diego, or a short flight through Salt Lake City, yet many San Diegan’s don’t know about it, and of those that have at least heard of it most have never been there. We left on Tuesday at noon and arrived 13 hours later (I know I said it’s 11 hours, but it took more time stopping for pictures and trying to find food for our

12  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

vegetarian photographer, Megan Gates). After getting in at 2 AM Mountain Time I had to pack one of my rigs for an early morning jump off of a popular BASE exit point called, “Tombstone.” The next morning the jump went off without a hitch and we were off to the best coffee house with the best name: Wake & Bake Café. This became our daily opener -- great coffee, awesome food, and free wireless Internet makes this place a hands-down must if you are in Moab. After checking into Slickrock Campground, owned by a friend and fellow BASE jumper, we set up camp and cracked a couple of beers that we smuggled in from San Diego. The beers from San Diego are an important part of this story because it is illegal to bring beer in from out of state. Beer in Moab, unless purchased directly from the state owned liquor store, is only 3.2% alcohol. None of us drink 3.2% beer. The beer that you purchase from the state owned liquor store cannot be sold cold. There are some other quirky laws that apply to alcohol: You need to purchase a permit to drink in a bar (usually $3) unless a Local sponsors you, and if you are having a drink at the bar waiting for your table you cannot carry your drink from the bar to your table. Somehow, the government thinks this will deter people from drinking. Anyway, after we set up camp, we headed out to the Moab Brewery to grab a bite to eat. The beer cheese soup and the burgers are awesome. Again, the beer was good, but at only 3.2%, you might as well be drinking water. The funny thing is that they have a full bar with every type of alcohol, yet they cannot serve beer over 3.2%. I don’t mean to give the Mormons shit, but that is the most ridiculous law I have ever heard.

The sunsets are unbelievable in Moab. The red-rock glows and the solemn cliffs and valleys leave you wondering why you are ever going to leave this place to go back to the crowded highways, daily grind, and the life you left behind a day earlier. As we sat atop “Mineral Bottom,” Megan snapped shot after shot capturing the tranquility exuded by this indescribable habitat. I looked around, and even though I had jumped many exit points at “Mineral Bottom” before, I had never just sat there and absorbed the beauty that was always right in front of me. When Megan was done shooting, we cracked another round of beers from San Diego to celebrate the end of our first day. Mineral Bottom at Sunset

Two weeks earlier, I had been sitting at Bub’s Dive Bar in PB with my buddy, Mike, one member of our Moab crew. He mentioned that he had been everywhere in Moab, except “The Fiery Furnace” in Arches National Park. One call to my BASE Jumping mentor, Jimmy Pouchert, owner of Apex BASE, and the excursion was set up with Desert Highlights Canyoneering, for which Jimmy is a guide. Guided tours are highly recommended due to the fact that many people get lost inside of the “Furnace.” At 8 AM the next day, we entered the “Furnace” and were taken back by the massive rock faces and fins that immediately engulfed us. A typical national park ranger lead tour is around 2 ½ - 3 hours. With Desert Highlights’ tour, we had over 5 hours of exhaustive hiking, scrambling, bouldering, climbing, and rappelling, seeing parts of the furnace that have been seen by very few. Permits are required and Desert Highlights is the only private company that is authorized to lead tours into the “Furnace.” Exhausted and in need of some food and beer, we returned to the Moab Brewery for killer burgers and some “Near Beer,” finishing off the day with a B-B-Q at Jimmy’s. Day 3 and the winds were picking up a little so we hit “Tombstone” again to be sure we got at least one jump in. There are infinite exit points for BASE jumping in Moab, but all are susceptible to high winds making them unsafe to jump. “Tombstone,” however, is shielded. We hooked up with a crew out of Denver and again made our way to the top with a 40-minute hike. The visuals on the hike are unbelievable: caves, massive walls, petro-glyphs, red-rock sands, blooming cacti and desert flowers. While Megan and I were on “Tombstone,” Mike was reliving his glory days as he took to one of the more technical mountain bike trails called “Slickrock,” arguably the most popular mountain bike trail in the world catering to over 100,000 visitors per year. Easier, but still difficult trails exist, such as “Amasa” over near “Tombstone,” and for those out for a leisurely ride, trails like “Klondike” will be more suitable. I left San Diego to get away from work but as usual a client called and needed a quote “immediately,” which screwed my plans to make a couple skydives. Skydive Moab is one of the most scenic drop zones in the world. Having jumped there previously, I can say that the only thing more beautiful than hiking the redrock canyons and climbing the rocks is viewing all of Moab from 13,000 feet. But … back to being screwed by my client. I went back to the Wake & Bake Cafe to finish the quote. Afterward and in need of some rest, we started a campfire at Slickrock Campground, roasted some hotdogs, drank the rest of our San Diego beers while sitting in awe looking at the night sky full of stars, and red-rock cliff outlines lit by the brightest moon. The next morning we packed up and headed out, but not before stopping at “Jimmy Hendrix,” an exit point that looks like a Hendrix¬¬ album cover showing only his eyes, nose, and afro (BASE jumpers are a creative bunch with their naming mechanisms). After 45 minutes of climbing, bouldering and scrambling, we arrived at the exit point only to be met by gusting winds, i.e. not jumpable winds. It didn’t matter though, hanging with your friends, experiencing what few will ever experience, forgetting about all of life’s daily worries in the middle of one of life’s true treasures, Moab, Utah, made it all worth while. The ride home was fairly silent, other than some reminiscing of the epic four days that we left behind to return to our daily lives. ENVIRONMENT

MOTHER EARTH NEWS

JUNKride

Spotlights Environmental, Human Health Impact of Plastic Marine Debris Dr. Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins, who have brought world attention to the “plastic soup” fouling our oceans, on April 4 set out on a 2,000-mile bicycle ride/speaking tour from Vancouver to Tijuana in a quest to end the age of disposable plastics. Eriksen, director of research and education with the Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF), and Cummins, AMRF’s education advisor, will pedal to 15 cities in 10 weeks for JUNKride 2009. Delivering dozens of presentations to educators, policymakers and the public, they’ll show wrenching photographs from a decade of research at sea: a dead turtle trapped in a plastic lawn chair, an albatross carcass bulging with tooth brushes and bottle tops, the plastic stomach-contents of fish commonly served in restaurants. “In ten years, the amount of trash floating out to sea has doubled,” Eriksen says. “We’ve got to find a better way soon. We’re already finding plastic waste in the food we eat.” The Algalita Marine Research Foundation, a Long Beachbased nonprofit organization, was founded by Captain Charles Moore, who first put the plastic soup problem on the map and spoke at this year’s TED Conference. “Moore’s work made it clear that plastic pollution is having a major impact on our marine environment,” says world renowned biologist Daniel Pauly, former director of the Fisheries Centre at the University of British Columbia. “I commend Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins for raising broader awareness of this grave problem with JUNKride.” Santa Monica residents, the couple will launch JUNKride 2009 at the Vancouver Aquarium, then head south for lectures on the environmental and human health impacts of plastic marine pollution. They’ll stop at universities, schools, other aquariums and the like in Seattle, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego and other big cities.

16  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

Their Los Angeles lecture, a collaboration with Surfrider Foundation, is slated for June 19. AMRF has focused its research on the North Pacific Gyre, a swirling vortex of ocean currents twice the size of the United States, in which a vast plastic buildup, or soup, is rapidly growing. “We haven’t seen the worst of it and have yet to fully delineate the area,” says Moore. “This summer’s research voyage seeks to validate models that show the highest levels of marine debris are northwest of Hawaii near the International Date Line.”

and maritime plastics. This will be documented for “Synthetic Me,” a new outreach project.

Eriksen, a Gulf War vet, sailed through the gyre from Long Beach to Hawaii last summer aboard Algalita’s JUNKraft made of 15,000 plastic bottles. For JUNKride, he and Cummins will hand out 100 jars of debrisfilled ocean water collected on the trip.

“It makes no sense that we take a material designed to last forever, then turn around and make products from it that are designed to be thrown away,” Eriksen says. “That’s the opposite of sustainable living.”

Says Cummins: “We hope to educate a new generation by going to schools and encouraging students to think about where exactly “away is” in our throwaway society. We must start seeing the link between consumerism and long-term environmental impact.” Scientists estimate that nearly half of all seabird and many marine mammal species are impacted by plastic waste, either from ingestion, entanglement or strangulation. The human health risk of the plastic ocean plague is growing. Aboard JUNKraft, Eriksen collected rainbow runner fish, commonly served in restaurants, and found plastic particles in their stomachs. “Plastics at sea are possible carriers for chemicals like DDT, PCBs and other pollutants, such as oil from our cars,” Eriksen says. “These are known human carcinogens and endocrine disrupters. Our research is examining whether they are released into fish that ingest plastic and wind up on our dinner plates.” In fact, Cummins is testing her blood for the dangerous chemicals to determine if a correlation can be made between meal time

Eriksen and Cummins say there is no way to clean up the North Pacific Gyre’s plastic soup. So, their manifesto is “do no more harm.” All along their route, they will work with legislators, educators and conservation organizations to promote ways to keep disposable plastics out of the ocean. They will urge everyone they meet to use stainless steel water bottles instead of singleuse plastic containers and carry groceries in canvas, not plastic bags.

Global warming activist Laurie David also commends JUNKride. “Individuals can make an enormous difference in the battle against environmental destruction,” says David, a producer of “An Inconvenient Truth.” “Marcus and Anna are doing the work of an army’s worth. I applaud their tireless effort and devotion to the cause.” JUNKride is a project of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, and sponsored by Ecousable, Horizon Lines, Xtracycle, Kashi, Revolution Fitness, BringYourOwn.org, Color Service Inc., Close the Loop and Patagonia. About Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF): AMRF is a Long Beach-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of the marine environment through research, education and restoration. Our primary work is to establish a baseline data set of the level of plastic debris found in our oceans and inform the public about its existence through public education. RSSS PRO AM GOES GREEN Raising Environmental Awareness While Showcasing Great Local Surfers

Revolt In Style will host their third year of great surfing competition at Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach this summer. Four Pro Am surfing contests will be held the fourth Saturday of each month, starting in June. The biggest change from season’s past? The event has turned green. Global Warming is our reality folks. This year the RSSS Pro Am event will encourage action and awareness of recycling, pollution, the hazardous plastics building up in our oceans and the unnecessary use of fossil fuels. This is accomplished by beach cleanups, the use of biodegradable & Recycled banners and products, the absence of plastic bottles and the use of bio fuels in vehicles. RIS has teamed up with The Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Coast Keepers, Green Leaf Bio Fuels, Junk Ride and The San Diego Lifeguard Association to provide a great positive Pro Am Surf comp that embraces the eco movement without giving up a fun festival atmosphere. This year’s presenting Sponsor is startup web company Maui Lu. They bring more great exposure to the events as well as the possibility of surfing Icons TBA. The event is shaping up to be the biggest surf comp of the summer In San Diego. We will be awarding 5 Aviso Carbon Fiber Surfboards as well as great swag from all our sponsors. Top surfers will receive cash prizes and trophies. Pros and amateur surfers are all invited.

Key Points 858 Graphics solves the problem of the huge vinyl banners used and discarded by most surf competitions. They found a biodegradable banner material and use of soy based Inks for the banners and the sponsors banners. Aviso Surfboards will provide surfboard demos at each event. Aviso surfboards are produced using carbon fibre instead of polystyrene foam used by most surfboard manufactures thus creating a smaller carbon footprint. Biodradable surf wax will be provided to the riders. This is one small element of the sport that is often overlooked, but is very important. Most surf wax contains petroleum products and is harmful to the environment. Another big problem at outdoor summer events is plastic water bottles. A thirsty kid can drink half a dozen bottles of water on a hot day. Multiply that by a few hundred athletes and spectators and you have a mess of plastic that eventually winds up in our landfills. The use of reusable drinking bottles, cornstarch containers and easily recyclable aluminum will all be used to curb the waste. Each event will begin and end with a beach cleanup. Bags, gloves and those gripper picker-uppers will be provided by The Surfrider Foundation. Prizes for the most trash picked up will make this another fun element at the events. What kid wouldn’t want to score a new board in return for running around on the beach getting dirty? The first event will start at 7 a.m. Saturday June 27th on the North Side of Crystal Pier. Don’t miss out. Some sponsorship packages are still available. What comps have you been doing lately?

Been doing a lot of tag team comps, the alumni contest for San Deguito and a sorority event for UCSD. I just did the Lowers WQS and got back from Australia and Tasmania for some WQS comps too. I have the annual K5 comp this weekend at my home break at Dst in Encinitas.

What’s the most exciting thing that has happened to you with surfing lately? I surfed Kirra in Australia.. 5 day swell.. Surfed all day long .. 30 second barrels.. So fun!

Who do you like to surf with and why?

Darrel, Sean and Scotty.. They all rip. Darrel rips, Shaun has the best style.. It helps me to surf with guys like that.

Do have any tricks or are you working on innovating any new moves? I like to do grab rail reverses and I like to do big stock airs.. I’ve been just working on riding the wave. When I was young I did all the tricks and airs, now I’m just working on doing turns but I’m actually gonna go back to work on some more big airs like gorkin flips. I want to get airs down, to do them in heats.

Whats something about you that nobody really knows?

I was a full vegetarian, I’d eat eggs and fish.. I went to Brazil.. I ended up eating lamb and Argentinian steak.. Pork and sausages.. I went off.. I ate lamb so much.. I eat ‘In And Out’ now.. Any time I can get a lamb shank..I will

What’s new? What’s coming up for you?

How has the economic crisis affected you?

Who do you want to give a shout out to?

Its givin me a headache... I hate hearing that word, I just live my life the way I always did. So sick of hearing about the economy.

INTERVIEW

I WANT MY BELT BACK! An Interview With Urijah Faber By Brian Terhorst

There was a huge upset in the WEC order last November. WEC 36... 2 1/2 minutes into the first round Urijah Faber was caught off guard with a devastating right from his opponent Mike Brown. Many fans and members of the MMA community refer to it as, ‘The Shot Heard Round The World’. The seemingly unstoppable ‘California Kid’ humbly accepted his second career loss. Since then, Urijah hasn’t slowed for a minute or missed a beat. He had a re-match with Jens Pulver and stomped him soundly here in San Diego. He has traveled with his Team to multiple fights, opened a new gym & even filmed a pilot for a new Reality TV show. No rest for this kid. He’s been constantly training himself for his rematch with Mike Brown. The re-match is on June 7, in front of his hometown crowd in Sacramento. Urijah is just a cool, energetic, positive guy. He’s entertaining as hell to see in the Octagon (or on TV) He’s easy to talk to and generally a blast to be around. It’s no wonder he’s the face of the WEC and one of the most popular and exciting fighters in the sport of MMA. We luckily had the opportunity to catch up with Urijah the other day. Here’s what went down: Watching that fight I have to say that it was definitely anyone’s fight up till the point Mike got you with that right. I’ve heard more than one person say that “Urijah knocked himself out.”What do you think about that? “Yeah, I made a small mistake and he capitalized on it” he explained “I don’t think it was a lucky punch necessarily, I think it was unlucky on my part. I bounced off the cage and just missed his head with an elbow, he ducked out and landed a big right. I wasn’t unconscious by any means, but he definitely rocked me. Had that not have happened who knows how the fight would have gone. I think I would have been victorious.”

Mike Brown takes ‘The Shot Heard Round The World’

What are you doing different, if anything, to train for this much anticipated rematch? “I’m training the same as always, really hard. A lot of the same stuff... working on my stand up and my ground game. Getting in great shape & just getting ready for battle. I tried to put on a little weight before the fight and now I’m just shedding back down. I think in the

first fight (with Brown) I made a small mistake and it was capitalized on. Up to that point I was doing a pretty good job of doing what I wanted to do. This time I’m going in a bit stronger and less wild and I’m gonna beat him.” I know that Mike Brown was seriously injured during the first fight, do you plan on attacking him the same way? “Yeah, I’m not sure how he injured his ribs exactly, I know I did knee him once in the ribs, but he said he did it throwing a punch and ripped it. I don’t really know, but yeah he was in pretty bad shape after the fight. But to his credit he went hard and um...did his part.” Who’s in your corner this time around? “My Jiu Jitsu instructor Fabio Prado. Master Thong my Muay Thai Instructor. I actually got a new boxing instructor I’ll probably have in there, his name is Juan Lazcano (he fought Ricky Hatton in one of his last fights). Dustin Akbari will be there too.” When you come down to San Diego where do you train? “When I go down to San Diego I usually go to City Boxing” What about the guys down at the Arena? “Saulo Ribeiro? I did go down there & work out with those guys. I Like Saulo, he’s a cool cat, man. He’s a World Champion.” What else keeps you busy besides your training? “I’ve actually been working with a couple of guys developing a new clothing line ‘Alpha Male Clothing’. Hopefully we’ll have that up and going pretty soon. www.livealphamale. com. That’s the name of my team. These guys really know what they’re doing on the clothing side of things. I’m pretty excited about that. Then we’re workin’ on a reality show. It’s about the whole team up here & stuff like that. We already shot a pilot & I should learn more about what’s gonna happen in the following weeks. Nothing concrete yet but something to keep an eye out for. I also opened a second Ultimate Fitness Gym here in Sacramento. It’s in Rancho Cordova, that’s going pretty well. So I’ve been pretty busy besides the training.” You also did a shirt with Luke up at SilverStar? “Yep, we have an unexclusive signature shirt deal with those guys. That looks like it’s gonna be a cool deal. I like that shirt quite a bit. Yeah everything’s goin’ good. I’m just plugging away.”

30  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

How are the guys on the team doing? “Joseph Benavidez is fighting again soon. He just beat Jeff Curran pretty decisively. I got Justin Buchholz who is fighting in the UFC in Germany. I’m actually leaving to that fight the day after my fight to corner him. Tito Jones just fought on the Strike Force. He actually lost on decision that I thought he won. Danny Castillo who is a WEC fighter also. He’s coming off his second win in the WEC. We got a whole team of guys that are starting to make shit happen.” It’s interesting watching Joseph Benavidez fight. He reminds me of you. You have a very distinct stance & decisive style when you enter the octagon, I can see some of that in him. Is that from working with you or working with your trainers? “Yeah we have the same trainers and we train together all the time. But he’s his own fighter, he’s a wild man. He’s got some crazy stuff that he does. He does all sorts of crazy kicks & stuff. A lot of his own stuff & some of mine. Using the same trainers, the styles get mixed in there. He’s a badass.” So are you. Sounds like you got yer head screwed on straight for this fight & it sounds like you’re busy as hell. I’m sure this is your #1 priority to get that belt back. “Yep, that’s it man. That’s what I’m trying to do. Put it on this guy, kick his ass & take back that belt.” We’re trying to come up with a title for this article. I saw you at a Joseph Benavidez fight doing an interview and you kinda shouted, “I want my belt back” What do you think? (He laughs) “Yeah, well that’s pretty much the general theme here. I just want to get that thing back and uh.... ya know I’m willing to fight for it. “

Urijah makes sure Jens Pulver is having a very bad day.

INTERVIEW

DIEGO ROOTS

above: (from left to right) Brandon, Josiah, Ryan & Chris sequence: Sold out Canes Show

Keepin it Real By Leslie Krouse

Diego Roots is one of those bands that it doesn’t matter how much time they take off, they are still just as incredible as when they left. I’ve been a big fan of these guys ever since I moved to the beach. Not only do they put on one of the best live shows, with the greatest vibe, but, they are probably one of the nicest group of guys you will ever meet. It always impressed me on just how real they are. Diego Roots is a true-to-heart grass-roots band that captures that unique, timeless, melodic surf sound, mixed in with a little rock, add traditional and alternative rhythms of reggae, and you have one truly great sound. The message of DR is clear “Good Times, that’s what we want, is to have good times, that’s why we named our first album Good Times” states Chris. Diego Roots is made up of Chris Mcconnaughey (vocals), Ryan Kelley (guitar,Vocals), Josiah Panella (drums), and Brandon Jensen (bass). But, there is a series side to DR, they are very passionate about their music, it’s what drives them to keep going, it’s in their hearts, and their souls. I sat down with Chris and got a little more in-depth on what their plans are for the future, and what we can expect from this iconic San Diego band.

RIS: It seemed the momentum had just starting picking up for Diego Roots, with national radio play, national and international touring, appearances on TV, and then all the sudden you just to stop. What happened? Chris: Well for the most part we did the hustle and bustle for about 9 years. Everyone in the band has a child now, I recently got married and had my son, who actually turns one tomorrow (May 22nd). It was kind of a little step back, responsibility wise, maturity wise, and where we were within our lives. I just wanted to take a year and regroup, and be the family man. I wanted to put a little more time and effort into that side of my life. As well as, really evaluating what we are doing as a band, rather than just aimlessly doing the local shows, I really wanted to take some time, and put some thought into what we were doing musically, creatively, and personally. We never really decided to just stop, it kind of went its own course, we all just did our own thing, and regrouped our lives. I think everybody is a little more comfortable where they are personally, and individually, so it makes for an easier combination as a group. RIS: Starting almost a decade ago, and taking time off. Where do you go from here? Chris: From here forward, I think our main goal, as always, is just to put out quality music. I know it’s sounds kind of a cliche’, but, quality vs quantity. We really want to set ourselves aside from just being one of those bands just pumping out discs, pumping out discs, pumping out discs, without any thought or value, to what they are really doing. It’s one thing from a marketing aspect, to get everything out, as much as you can, and just try to get as much exposure that way. I think being where we are in our lives, and from hear forward, it really is just about pleasing ourselves, and what we’re doing as far as the music, and why we do it. It’s more, or less than the whole ambiance of having the Rock Star lifestyle, or the center of attention spotlight,

34  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

it’s more about putting out music that is what I like to think, timeless. When I think of Bob, and Peter Tosh, Desmond Howard, and some of the greats, you listen to their music, and it’s so far ahead of their time, and yet at the same time, timeless. We’re listing to songs that were written in the 60’s and 70’s as if it could have been written yesterday, it really has that timeless’esque feel to it. I think that’s kind of our goal here forward, is to put out good quality music and albums. Rather than being this band that comes and slams out a million albums, but yet there’s no quality, You’re lucky if you get 1 or 2 songs out of 15 on the record that are good. I really want you to be able to put in a disc of ours, and not want to skip a song, and when it’s over, just have it on repeat, because that’s how it should be. RIS: Now you guys have always been and independent band, are you going to keep it that way? Chris: Not necessarily, we’re looking for the right thing, and I think that’s what put us in the position we are in. We’ve been approached to do different things, and we’ve passed on the different opportunities. You see those overnight success stories, and most people’s mentalities are “oh you guys are so good, I can’t believe you haven’t made it.” The music industry in general, is such a cut throat industry, you can sell yourself to the devil per-say, or you can do what you do, and do what you believe in, and hope you find that magical person that can exploit you for what you are, and not what they want you to be. RIS: Do you think it’s easier for bands now to promote more with internet, and all these avenues you just didn’t have when you started? Chris: Oh yeah, when we first started getting going, of coarse we had the internet, but MySpace wasn’t a big deal, Facebook wasn’t a big deal, and the concept of e-mail blasts, that’s all new. As far as when we first basically got started, pounding the pavement, and getting out there and playing shows with who-ever, when-ever, for what-ever, was just the way we did it. Shoot, I can remember the 1st show we ever did, we printed up 5000 fliers, and stood on the corners of Garnet Ave, and Felspar, and passed them out until 2 & 3 o’clock in the morning, then getting up the next day and walking the beaches for hours from Crystal Pier to the Jetty just handing out fliers. That was the way you did it, It was a lot of legwork. Bands have it a lot easier now, you record a 3 song demo, then you upload it to your MySpace page, then you put together a little electronic bio, and send it out to all the venues, or other managers, or other bands, and just try to piggy pack and network that way, as much as you can. It’s definitely a blessing, but I think with that being said, it also floods not necessarily the market, but it floods the scene, with I wouldn’t say amateur, but just to the point where everybody, and anybody can do it, anybody can put together a record now, anybody can get on Myspace, and anybody can put their stuff up. Instead of being 1 out of 40 bands that are playing local, and pounding the pavement, now you’re 1 and 500 bands on the internet in your little area. Which can be a great thing, it does make it easier to network your stuff across the states, and build your fan base outside of your hometown, but I think is does make it a more competitive industry. So yeah, it has its pros and cons, it has definitely helped us with our fan base in general, outside of San Diego, and outside of California. That’s one thing about the record companies, they aren’t selling records anymore, it’s about the downloading itunes and MP3’s.

RIS: I heard that vinyl sales are on the rise, what are your thoughts on how the industry, and consumers have changed? Chris: I prefer vinyl, I wish they still pressed vinyl. There is something to be said about hearing the crackle of the needle skipping vinyl grooves, it’s just authentic to me. If I go into a store and buy a record, I feel as a fan that I have supported that band, because I’ve taken not only just the music, but I’ve gotten into the whole identity, or the whole project, as far as what the band it doing, and it goes all the way from the artwork, to the CD, to the style. I think when you look at the internet and downloads, ok you pay your 9 bucks and you download your 20 MP3’s, that to me, I feel all I’m doing is supporting corporate America, I don’t feel like I’m supporting the sweat and tears that the band has put into the record. Overall, by downloading, sure it’s helping their cause, but being a fan, to tangibly hold a disc, and to be able to look through the CD, at the cover, and see some pictures and photo’s, and read the stories, it gives you more, and I think it makes it more personal. I think society in general has gotten to distant from each other, you can send me 25 e-mails in a day, but you can’t call me on the phone and give me 5 minutes of your time. I think it makes everything impersonal. I think we all need to step back and remember what is real. RIS: You guys had an incredible experience on one of your tours, what happened? Chris: We were on the Miller Lite Live Taste of Music Tour, they took us over to Guam with a company called Phaki, which is a mixed martial arts company that was based in San DIego, they’re Chamorro which are the people of Guam. They took us over there for 9 days. While we were there, there was this catholic school, ironically enough that my mom used to teach at when I was a kid, it was in danger of closing. So we did a spur of the moment thing, and booked another two shows, where the proceeds from those shows, and some of the proceeds from the main show that we were there for, went back to the school to keep it open. They just didn’t have enough kids that were enrolling, so they didn’t have enough money to keep the school going. Lucky for us that we could do, what we were able to do. It was a very humbling and eye opening experience, I think we all came back different people. I think humbled by what we thought was important, and eyes opened to the world, and we think is essential, which is caring and giving, and not taking. There is so much to giving, give, give, give, I try to do that with every aspect of my life. Sometimes in giving you get taken advantage of, and sometimes you get run over, but it’s better than feeling like a douche bag because you took, and didn’t give anything back. There are people out there that are starving, and I see someone buy a $50. meal and just through it away, it blows my mind. If everyone just did one thing for someone else, I don’t think there would be as many people that are needy. Just do what you can, and as much as you can. RIS: Who has influenced you both in the past and present? Chris: I think just listing to everything, from the Beatles to the Clash, to the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin, to Metallica, to the local bands that have pushed us to do what we are doing, definitely Unwritten Law, Sprung Monkey, and Sublime, then going into the iconic bands like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Beres Hammond. It’s one thing to say you’re influenced, I think what it does, it sparks a fire in you, if you can have an appreciation for any kind of music, you can be influenced from everything, from church music to country. It doesn’t really matter what you listen to, it’s just the fact that you have a common liking, or a common appreciation for music in general. I mean you love music, you eat, sleep, breath, sing music. Just in city life, you’re standing on the corner, you hear a bus go by, or the dude is shuffling through the trash for cans, life is music, it’s just whether or not you can stop and really hear it. I have an appreciation and love for any kind of music RIS: Anyone you would like to thank? Chris: Our families. I can only imagine one day your son comes home and says “Hey look dad, I don’t want to go to school anymore, I just want to play music” and knowing that’s not what they want for you, but will stand behind you on any decision you might make. Without the support of your friends and family it would make it hard to accomplish any goal you may have. So the biggest THANKS has to go to our friends and family. Grant it we’re not making million dollar paychecks, or traveling all over the world 8 months out of the year, but for me to be able to do what I have done, and see what I’ve seen, and the experiences in life I have had in the last 10 years, I owe to everybody else who was there for me when I was doing what I wanted to do. Helping me with my rent, helping me with my recording time, helping me with life in general so I could go out and try, try to be successful in music.

Roots is a band that is more in touch with what it is to be a musician, and put out good music, than it is to be just the musician, does that make any sense, it’s like, any guy can be a father, but it takes a real man to be a dad. That’s the way we approach the band, and that’s how we want people to see the band. It’s just a matter of quality over quantity. It’s not to often you get to see Diego Roots live, and we’re not sure when the next time will be, so make sure you catch them May 29th at Anthology in Little Italy, the only disappointment you will have, is that you missed this show. below: chillin’ on The Boardwalk

RIS: So when your son comes to you in about 17 years and says he doesn’t want to go to college, he wants to play music, are you ready for that? Chris: So for me as a musician, I think I would understand, and I would do everything I could to make that a possibility for him. I think that’s the biggest thing is family support. I can honestly say the biggest fans I have, are my mom and dad, they were my fans before we even played a first show, because they allowed me, and supported me to be able to do it from the start. If you don’t have people who believe in you, and will back you, it makes it 10X harder to be successful. Leslie, you asked me who I want to thank, I also want to thank people like yourself who give us the opportunity, and the support in what we are doing, without that we are nothing. RIS: So what’s next? Chris: What’s next, you know just to gear up, write some music, and get some more albums out, to put out quality music. I want to look at it, that when my time comes, or when I’m gone, the way I view it, that what I’ve put out there now, is out there forever. If Diego Roots doesn’t play for another 10 years, or doesn’t play for another 2 years, what we’ve done so far, you can’t take it away. In the future, I know it sounds cliche’, but, I just take things one day at a time. I look forward to setting realistic goals, in reality, shit, I would love to tell you that in two years we’ll be touring, and in two years we’ll be on a major label, and in two years we’ll be living the dream. But, reality is I’m going to continue doing music, the band is going to continue doing music, whether together or not, to please ourselves, to please that inner desire to be a musician. The reality is, I want people to understand that Diego

3RD BOROUGH ‘Truth, Peace, and Love’ by Leslie Krouse

Every once in a while, a project will mesh together in a way that even the artist never expected. It starts with a group of friends just hanging out in Ocean Beach, and escalates into an eclectic montage of some of the finest So Cal sounds to hit our little town of San Diego. 3rd Borough is that group. Friends Apoulo 8 and Justin Werner started this project with the hope of capturing the essence of truth, peace, and love in their music. They were shortly joined by Mark Boyce from G-Love & Special Sauce, who brought knowledge, experience, and a lot of big names to the projects. Along with these amazing artists; Bass: Chris Mcgriel - Superunloader Drums & Percusion: Chad Farran – Superunloader Lead Guitar :Gabriel Feenberg - Old Man Hands and Jalopy Street Orchestra Wind Instuments: Nachman Wajcman - Old Man Hands and Jalopy Street Orchestra Vocals Violin :Raquel Emmons - Mas Grande Mpc: Lucid1 - Lucid One Ableton: Knowa KnowOne - Knowsleep 3rd Borough was born. 3rd Borough grooves in a great variety of genres, with a focus in the contemporary sounds of electro-acoustic, hip-hop, indie folk-rock, funk, R&B, etc. This creative and original manifestation unites sub-cultures through sounds. 3rd Borough promotes and contributes to an environmentally conscious movement. This group blends right into the elements of the soul through a musical production and spiritual evolution that mends and activates the chakras. The fabric of virtue that is ingrained in humanity is the driving force behind this project; in the nature of people, is the need to benefit and make progress in their area of the world. We do this in many ways, for instance, by supporting, sharing and becoming involved with the community, emphasizing the power of creativity, and the importance of diversity...no doubt, there is strength within their differences. This is a taste of the philos of 3rd Borough. RIS: So tell us about 3rd Borough? Apaulo 8: We have a folk rock urban sound with a clash of hip hop and electronic music in there. Justin and I started the band. We’ve been playing music together for 10 years. We got Mark Boyce from G-Love to join us, and he started promoting us and got us some big names to join us on the album

36  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

Justin: We wanted to put a good positive message of love, truth and peace, and just trying to unite people. Hopefully we can represent through the music, and all the genres coming together a symbol of unity and music, and also through the combination of the hip-hop and Urban folk rock, to show and to symbolize unity, and walk the talk. Ultimately this is what 3rd Borough represents, and 3rd Borough is an old European term with means ‘peace officer’ or ‘peace maker’, and that’s ultimately what we are trying to bring out in the world through our songs. Mark: You try to use things as a platform, and try not to be overtly preachy, because people lose interest, and through what we’re doing musically, it definitely shows some anti-establishment values that we’ve had for a long time. It definitely show a non violent stance for sure, and just how we can do things without resorting to the actions that we’ve seen so much of lately. But in a positive, party atmosphere. Our attitudes are, come join us and celebrate this. It’s a good balance of our political, our esthetics, and our attitudes, they all seem to co-exist pretty well together. RIS: Lets talk about the new Album. Mark: It’s funny about a year ago I met Paul through a mutual friend of mine here in Ocean Beach, SD. He asked me to come over and play on some songs that they recorded. The record sounded really good, I could hear the songs were there, but it needed a bit of development. The product was at a really basic level. I really became interested in it. I had some experience in production, and was living in San Diego and had some time off, I would be able to really get in there and help it out. Now a year later we have this really great record. It’s a combination of a lot of talents, and a lot of different people’s help. Ultimately the end result was what we were looking for in the record. I feel we have achieved success already in just getting it done. Now to put it out, it’s really exciting for us to take this statement that we made and spread it around to different people. It’s an eclectic sound for a band, I don’t think there is anybody else that sounds like 3rd Borough. We’re really excited to see how people are going to react to this record. People that have been buying the record, and giving us feedback, it really helps. Apaulo 8: We’ve got a good live feel with instrumentation, we also brought in producers who do a lot of hip-hop and electronic style music, and crossed those genres into it as well. Like Mark said, every song on this album is totally different, it is def-

initely a new sound. We have Killa Priest from Wu Tang on this album as well, we got him through Main Flow who has been a big part of the production with this album as well. We’ve got some new videos with Vidal Films working with MTV. We are just trying to get it all out there right now. RIS: I love the video for Singing in the Wood rocks, great scenery, great song. Was that all shot here in San Diego? Mark: You can shoot anywhere here. You walk out your front door and you get a taste of it. Some of the locations were poignant to the message in the song. Fortunately that’s the back drop. You can just go out into the streets. Everybody is from here, we all met here, and that’s why we are sitting here with you. This town has brought all of us together. RIS: Tell us about the show at Anthology, what and who can we expect to see? Apaulo 8: We’ve got some acts from San Francisco coming down, Souleye & DC, and Nakila is gonna be a featured secret appearance from Goddess Alchemy Project, they are all blowing up on the festival circuit. Slightly Stoopid’s DeLa, and possibly C-Money. Mark: We’ve been putting the word out to some of our friends, who have been noncommittally committing, what-ever that means. We will definitely put out some heavy hitters, so expect a great show.

HEAR THIS By David Pond

Editor’s Pick - 3rd BOROUGH - Self Titled Genre - folk/rock/hip hop 3rd Borough’s self titled album is a folk/rock/hip hop experiment with ground breaking results. Combining everything from a harmonica to a drum machine, every track is another well executed experiment in genre blending. That’s not to mention that the album also brings together Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, Killah Priest of the Wu-Tang, SD’s own Main Flow, Slightly Stupid’s horn section (C Money and De La) and G Love the front man of the ever so popular G Love and Special Sauce. The album is fun, positive, conscious , well produced and filled with the likes of hip hop and rock icons, what more could you ask for? 3rd Boroughs album is more like a open jam than an album, each track smoothly connecting to the next, its an easy album to put on from track one and listen straight through without skipping a track. Bringing together the sounds of folk music, hip hop, and rock and roll, 3rd Borough doesn’t miss touching upon any genre of music, even classical music snobs can find harmony in the soothing violin that’s so wonderfully presents itself throughout the album. The song “Roller Coaster” has a harmonica as its main focus, that even John Popper of Blues Traveler would be jealous of. Then the next track features the gritty rapper Killah Priest, the unexpected transition is easily digested and your ear moves right along as if the blues and hip hop were one in the same. My east coast roots make me a Wu-Tang fanatic, so obviously I was going to be a sucker for the next track on the album featuring Killah Priest. The song “Heart of God”, sounds so amazingly Wu-Tang as if 3rd Borough grew up in Staten Island themselves, it has the same raw gritty feeling of a any RZA production but with a 3rd borough twist that makes it fit right in with the acoustic guitars, harmonicas and violins throughout the rest of the album. If this sounds crazy to you I am not surprised , I recommend the best way to make sense of all of this is to go pick it up the album yourself. 3rd Borough plays a CD release party May 29th at Anthology.

THE EVEN KEEL - Coming Up

Genre - Hip Hop Whenever I hear a hip hop album makes me want to raise my fist in anger against the man I get so pissed the mainstream has killed all that is good in hip hop. The Even Keel however reminds me that even though the mainstream may not understand the roots of hip hop the underground still does. Coming Up is a perfect example that hip hop still lives on in the underground and that creativity will continue to grow the art form. The Even Keel’s album pays tribute to old school hip hop while progressing the sound to the next level, an MC spitting clever elevating rhymes over dope beats, that’s the future of hip hop. Two tracks stand out; “Wake Up” has a sinister beat that’s reminiscent of Definitive Jux’s own EL-P and “The Natural” is a classic hip hop song with swaying violins that make you want to wave your arms left to right like your listening to an old Tribe Called Quest song from the early nineties . If your a true hip hop head (you don’t consider Soulja Boy hip hop) than don’t waist anytime, go out and support your local hip hop scene and buy this album or go see these guys live, you won’t regret it. The Even Keel play at Brick by Brick May 31st.

AIMEE ALLEN - A Little Happiness

Genre - Folk/Rock/Reggae Take Bob Marleys laid back reggae rhythms, mix them with the powerful country voice of Neko Case and the end result is Aimee Allen’s album “A Little Happiness”. Its not surprising Allen is a Montana girl relocated to L.A., the albums indicative of this, blending the mountains with the beaches and folk with reggae, like peanut butter mixes with jelly, “A Little Happiness” is an excellent pairing of genres. Soothing to your ears while at the same time making your feet and hips shake uncontrollably. Composed of eleven tracks, ten of which are originals and one that is a cover, the albums standout is “Santeria” by Sublime. It’s not that she covered a great song (I mean she did) but its the originality that Aimee Allen brings to the song that makes it so good. Pairing her tranquilizing voice with the simplistic sound of a ukulele, Aimee Allen reinvents Sublime’s classic and yeah sure, a cute brunette singing, “Daddies got a new 45...” will win my vote any day, but the bottom line is she does an excellent job of reinvented a ska/punk song with just a ukulele. The rest of the album doesn’t disappoint either, ten solid songs about love, life, heartbreak and happiness all iced over with folk and reggae, so weather your a rasta or a cowboy I recommend you take a listen to this one. Aimee Allens “A Little Happiness” is due for release June 9th on Side Tracked Records.

NEVER SHOUT NEVER - The Summer EP

Genre - Punk/Rock/Indie One trip to Never Shout Never’s Myspace and you can’t help but notice the big bold letters that spell out peace, love, spirituality, harmony, truth, happiness and faith and “The Summer EP” radiates with those same messages through fun loving pop rock. If you rushed out of the house to buy Phantom Planet’s “The Guest” the minute you heard the song “California”, on the OC, than Never Shout Never is surely a band for you. This six song EP has the alternative pop rock sound that Jason Schwartzman made popular with Phantom Planet, but its also keeps it’s own quirky originality. This is especially prevalent on the love song “Happy”, which makes you want to smile as you sway your head, forward and back to the fun sound of the ukulele as if your twelve again sitting around the campfire singing “Kumba Yah”. The album does have its share of break up songs, but they aren’t depressing tracks, for example the song “I Just Laugh” tells the story of a love that is gone but what else can you do but laugh. Its the fun songs like these that help give Never Shout Never their own fun quirky originality, distinct to that of other alternative pop bands. “The Summer EP” is all about the goodness under the sun, looking on the bright side of life and putting breakups aside for better days. Never Shout Never are all about feeling good and they are not afraid to let you know.

DRIVE A -Loss Of Desire

Genre - Punk/Rock Heavy guitar rifts, spine tingling drums, and vocals that remind you of the Kinks on speed... wow these dudes know how to rock. If I ever see these guys in a bar I am going to buy them a drink just for rocking so hard, only problem is I will have to wait a few years to do so because the entire band is under the age of twenty. They may be young but they have the last fifty years of rock and roll all summed up on this album, everything from the brit pop invasion to punk is expressed in the albums twelve songs. Thats not to say that these guys haven’t created an original sound, it’s more like they have taken rock and roll history, learned from it, and then progressed it to a new level. “Coming For You” emphasizes this the best, it’s a song that could have been given to birth by the Beatles and Slayer makin’ whoopee, the thrashing guitar and catchy harmony in the lyrics make it hard not to reminisce of rock and roll history while you listen. The track, “Can’t Sleep it Off”, shows the bands punk roots are just as prevalent, in classic punk fashion, the lead vocalist explains his problems while the rest off the band yells “Fuck You!!!!”. Now if thats not rock and roll, I guess I just don’t know what is. Drive A’s Loss of Desire was released on May 19th. Thanks to all of you that sent in CDs! The response has been ridiculously overwhelming. I have so many CD’s to choose from each month and only space enough for 5 or 6

each issue. If your CD didn’t get reviewed yet don’t think that your music sucks. It just means I haven’t gotten to it yet. If you got talent,

we’ll showcase it. Send your CD and Bio C/O Leslie Krouse, Revolt In Style Magazine, P.O Box 9771, San Diego, CA 92169 and you just might end up in the next issue of Revolt In Style Magazine. Keep sending in your music and we’ll keep promoting it.

SUMMER 2009 MOVIES

CD REVIEWS

Summer Preview By Beth Accomando

Ever since Star Wars scored an unexpected hit with a May release back in 1977, Hollywood has been looking to start the summer blockbuster season earlier and earlier each year. So this May finds us already in the midst of the summer blockbuster season with Wolverine, Star Trek and now Terminator Salvation in theaters. The studios have staked out each of the valuable weekends with Terminator Salvation nabbing the highly prized and often lucrative Memorial Weekend on May 21. You might notice something similar about all these films -- they are all new additions to existing franchises and there’s not a fresh idea in the bunch. The summer films of 2009 may offer some new takes on the familiar but they are mostly add-ons to well-established franchises, and are best described as Hollywood products rather than films since that’s how the studios view them. The content of this summer’s films seems almost inconsequential so long as there’s merchandising (check out all the new toy tie-ins at the store for Wolverine and Star Trek) and advertising tie-ins (Star Trek has partnered with eInsurance). 40  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

So in addition to the trio of origin tales (Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation) there are a few other new films that have a vaguely or not so vaguely familiar feel. Denzel Washington and John Travolta star in not the first but the second remake of John Godey’s novel Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 (opening June 12). Previously this tale of a New York City subway hijacking was made in 1974 and then in 1998 for TV. The remakes take us through a progression of ethnicities for the character of Lt. Garber who was first played by the white Walter Matthau, then by Latino Edward James Olmos, and now African American Washington. If this story hits the screen again maybe we’ll have an Asian lesbian. Next up on June 24 is the sequel Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen. Nothing new here. It may be a sequel but you can expect everything you got in the first film but turned up to eleven. And that doesn’t mean better, just louder. Also from Paramount is G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra with Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Byung Hun Lee, Sienna Miller, Jonathan Pryce, Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans and Dennis Quaid. Prepare for more noisy destruction.

UP

Interview with Peter Docter By Beth Accomando

3D ain’t what it used to be. Gone are those funky glasses with one red lens and one blue one. Gone are gimmicky titles like Comin’ at Ya. Gone too (or at least almost gone) are people on the screen pointing at the viewer and throwing things into the audience. Instead, films such as Coraline and the new Disney/Pixar animation Up employ 3D asa means of enhancing their stories and delivering a visually dazzling big screen experience. “I wanted to make sure that Up wasn’t a 3D movie about a man who sails his house to South America. It’s a movie about an old man who sails his house to South America that also happens to be in 3D,” says director Peter Docter, “So the first thing is always the story.” “We didn’t want characters poking at you,” adds producer Jonas Rivera, “Our job is to make people forget they are watching a movie. If something breaks the screen and points at you, you are reminded you are watching a movie so we decided we’d treat the screen like a window that we look into this world.” And an amazing world it turns out to be. Up challenges expectations about what American animation can be about. As with Pixar’s Wall-E, Up has a large chuck of its opening play without dialogue.

On July 1 there’s the 3D animated sequel Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Public Enemies, a new film returning to familiar real life gangster John Dillinger. The attraction of Public Enemies is the casting of hunky Christian Bale as Fed Melvin Purvis and yummy Johnny Depp as America’s most wanted criminal John Dillinger. Michael Mann’s at the helm of this one so even though the material may be familiar there’s hope that he will deliver it with some flair.

“The opening shows Carl and Ellie’s life together,” says Docter, “that came out of the theme of the film about Carl [voiced by Ed Asner] redefining what adventure really is, what life is about. He and his wife promised each other that they’d some day go to this exotic place in South America and they never make it. Life got in the way and Carl worries that he has failed his wife but then comes to learn that they had had the best adventure in the world, which was this relationship together.”

Much of the film deals with Carl as an old man – not the typical main character in a Hollywood animated film. In that respect Up recalls the anime Howl’s Moving Castle by Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki. Docter is a fan of both anime and Miyazaki, and admires what Miyazaki can do in Japan.

INTERVIEW

Originality is not really evident in these summer films because the studios want a sure thing -- or at least what they see as a sure thing -- when they are investing mega-budgets of 100 to 200 million dollars. With that much at stake, the studios don’t want to gamble on a fresh idea. They want something tried and true with a built in audience. That’s why all of these films follow up previous films that were box office winners, or bank on popular stars. When the studios invest this kind of money they want insurance on their investment and remaking films or making sequels and prequels are their way of getting that insurance.

“I think in Japan animation isn’t relegated to being a genre unto itself,” says Docter, “it’s just a medium by which you can tell any number of stories be it horror or action or adventure or drama or whatever, and we’re trying to do that as well. Every film that you go see from Pixar, we’re hoping is a little bit of a surprise. You don’t quite know what you’re going to get. We hope to keep kind of pushing the boundaries of what defines us.” Docter participated in the directing of the English language version of Howl’s Moving Castle as he was in the process of making Up. “So it was an interesting time to be able to observe how Miyazaki-san handled some similar material,” says Docter, “We’re sort of trained [here in the U.S.] that the way to keep an audience is to keep dangling the carrot ‘What’s going to happen next?’ It’s all about plot and keeping things moving forward and what [Miyazaki] does is to take these real observed truthful moments. A lot of time nothing’s happening next, it’s just right now how does this little kid behave, look at the way the water just ripples down and drops, just beautifully observed little moments of truth that you just recognize and respond to and we just try to put some moments like that into this film.” Rivera agrees: “Not a day goes by that a Miyazaki film doesn’t come up in conversation. What we love about those films is that they just breathe. So many films, especially animated films don’t. It’s just boom-boom-boom-boom. But we wanted this to breath a little bit. To somehow channel that charm that grace that those films have.” Up opens May 29 and offers yet another stellar animated work from Disney/Pixar Studios.

If you want something fresh, new and original, you may have to seek out smaller films at the art house. But if you want something comfortably familiar, then Hollywood has just what you want.

MINI REVIEWS

WATCH THIS IN THEATRES By Beth Accomando

Drag Me To Hell

(Universal Pictures) Sam Raimi rose to fame with the low-budget horror films of The Evil Dead Trilogy. Then he found mega-mainstream success with the Spider-Man franchise. Now he makes his long awaited return to horror with Drag Me to Hell. (Is that a great title or what?) Alison Lohman plays a loan officer ordered to evict an old woman from her home only to end up cursed. The question is, if life’s a living hell is it better to die? Now if this film only had Bruce Campbell in it. Opens May 29 Rated RRRR

The Girlfriend Experience

(Magnolia Pictures) Porn star Sasha Grey makes her mainstream film debut in Steve Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience. Grey plays a high-priced call girl on the eve of the 2008 elections. The film follows 2005’s Bubble as Soderbergh’s second for 2929 Entertainment to be shot on HD and to receive simultaneous release across theatrical, DVD, and TV platforms. But will Soderbergh’s chilly portrait of modern urban depersonalization be warmly embraced by audiences? Opens May 22 at Landmark’s Hillcrest Cinemas Rated RR

Land of the Lost

(Universal Pictures) The 1970s Sid and Marty Kroft TV series Land of the Lost provides the basis for this big screen adaptation. Dr. Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell) is sucked into a space-time (or is it a time-space?) vortex and meets up with dinosaurs. Director Brad Silberling has a lousy track record with past adaptations of Casper and A Series of Unfortunate Events, so this may be quickly relegated to the land of the lost remakes. Opens June 5 Rated R

Departures

(Regent Releasing) Departures surprised everyone by nabbing this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, thus assuring it an actual theatrical release. The story has delicious potential: A failed cellist answers an ad about “working with departures” and is shocked to discover it’s not a travel industry job but rather one preparing the dead for funerals. The film’s inspired by Japanese author Shinmon Aoki’s mortician memoir, Coffinman. Prepare yourself for a meticulous portrait of the process of casketing bodies for cremation -- among other things. Opens June 5 at Landmark’s La Jolla Village Theaters Rated RRRR

Valkyrie

I Don’t know how someone can be such a tool and continue to put out one great movie after another. Hate to say it...but I loved Valkyrie. Tom Cruise pulls off the one handed, one eyed, one thumb German officer well. Unfortunately I paid attention in History class and knew how Hitler actually died, and felt quite bad that all these guys were gonna DIE IN THE END. Obviously based on true events, this drama co-stars Stephen Fry, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard. Deffo rent this one!

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Kevin James (“King of Queens”) stars in this job training video for the graduating class of 2009. A group of action sport goons try to rob a mall? Probably funny for the under 12 crowd. Almost no laughs, except when Pro Skateboarder Mike Vallely & BMX legend Rick Thorne both get taken out by the chubby Mall Cop. eh...skip this one.

AchTWINSes Heel

Good For What SCALES Ya

You’re the only sign of the zodiac who can hold the attention of everyone from insecure Taurus, to slutty Sagittarius. I used to blame this on your finelycrafted aloofness but now I realize it’s all about the hair. That’s why I tricked you into letting me cut yours and convincing you it looks wonderful. I’ve become so popular with the masses of your exparamours that my hand is worn out from all the high fives. In these lonely, hairless times, I’ll bet your hand is worn out too, huh?

If I had a nickle for each time you got drunk and told me your big plans for the future, I’d be able to afford the anti-fungal cream your rotten toes so desperately need. But who are we kidding? Even if you acquired that cream you’d end up losing or eating it.

CRABsolutely Stupid I could sell you back your own human waste and tell you it cures cancer, Cancer! Sometimes when you tell me stories about the unicorns and waterfalls I just wanna punch you in the face. Sometimes I do punch you in the face and when you regain consciousness I tell you that Jesus had just given you a hug and you passed out from the luv-overload. And because you believe that, I have to punch you in the face again. My advice: Get new friends. LIONions and Sauerkraut All of you fire signs have got to stop experimenting with deodorant. There is no experiment to conduct! Just WEAR it! I can also smell the rotting food between your teeth each time you laugh at your own knock-knock jokes. I wish you’d lock yourself in the basement like the old days when you were convinced a UFO was waiting outside of your home. How VIRy GINerous Of You Oh Virgo, you’re so cute when you get all needy and sleep with deadbeats. But there are better ways to help homeless people. 44  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

Knock, Knock, Knockin’ On Heaven’s SCORPIDOOR For such an aggressive know-it-all, you’re one seriously dumb fuck, Scorpio. It’s people like you, Hitler, and Ann Coulter that convince me there can be no God. Unless He’s as big of a fuck-up as you. Quit trying to teach yourself grammar and politics - you’re a lost cause. I’d like to knock your illiterate head against a brick wall until it deflates. CENTAURgh! You may as well join a band of pirates cos according to your dentist, you’ll fit right in. Good gawd, Sag, when are you gonna realize that we feel pain for a reason?! You could’ve saved those teeth but now you won’t even get a job in a drivethru window with that face. You could get a parrot though and teach it to pick the bits of food from the few teeth that remain in your head. ARGH! Ye be disgustin’, ya scallywag! Rhythm Is GOATchya

It’s been a while for you and partying, Capricorn, but thanks to the combination of summer and your latest bonus check, you’re really in the mood to let the good times roll. My advice to you is to actually enjoy it and resist the urge to mix business with pleasure. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a party where you haven’t walked around selling shots of Goldschlager for a dollar.

Nobody Likes an AQUARIUSnitch Your back-stabbing has come full circle and now the only one who will hang out with you is your chinless Dr. Frankenstein boss to whom you’ve been playing Igor. May your love continue to blossom, though your sex lives are dead in the water. (Seriously - are you both virgins? We’ve got an office pool riding on it.) I’m a FISH, I’m a Lover, I’m a Child, I’m a Mother None of us were surprised by LOST’s Season Finale in which Ben revealed he’s a Pisces. No one is crazier, yet so easily manipulated as you. But I bet you’re getting really tired of everyone leaving you, huh? Maybe if you weren’t such a whiny, schizo bitch you wouldn’t be so lonesome. You really put the “BYE” in bipolar, Pisces! Pro-ARIEStive You wouldn’t have such bad skin if you’d just start washing your damn face. Soap + water = you no longer resembling the mole people. This is a fantastic routine for you to master. We’ll move onto your hair and wardrobe next month. DelectaBULL I’m impressed that your STDs don’t deter more people from climbing aboard, but I guess that’s a real testament to how much action low standards can get a person. Still, I encourage you to Google “genital warts” and realize at last that getting them burnt off does not mean you’re cured. As usual, you’re being unrealistically optimistic.
