If British colonists celebrated the removal of the French from North America following the French and Indian War, their celebration was short-lived. Almost immediately, the British government attempted to confront an ongoing problem-the large debt that had accumulated during almost half a century of constant warfare. The government believed its victory in war had been especially beneficial to the colonists. In return, the British reasoned it was fair for the colonists to assume some of the costs of the war and continued protection through increased taxation. New taxes and more rigorous enforcement of existing taxes generated intense resentment and resistance among many colonists.
