Regemrei Bernardo, Head of Mass Communication and Performing Arts Department (MCPAD) stated the importance of aspiring media practitioners to be aware about the spread of false information. “Malaki kasi ang magagawa natin na tayo ay maging malay sa mga ganitong bagay kasi baka sa sari-sarili nating buhay

To bring the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) students together, annual contests, Media Olympics and Tintagisan transformed into group-based competitions in this year’s college awareness week, May 2 and May 3.

A total of eight groups composed of CAL students were formed together to collaborate in competitions for Media Olympics and Tintagisan which was held separately in the past CAL week celebrations.

For Media Olympics, members of each group comprised of third year Broadcasting students, third and fourth year Journalism and Malikhaing Pagsulat students had to produce a feature show, a news program and a pelikula-tula while some third year Theater Arts students joined the pep rally during the college’s awareness week opening.

Kim Nicole Samson, the head of the committee which led this year’s Media Olympics explained the purpose and goal of changing the competition’s format.

“Ito po ay naging proposal ng MCPAD Head [Regemrei Bernardo] dahil nakita na ‘yong dating format ay wala namang pinagkaiba sa kung ano ang ginagawa sa classroom. Nais na isapraktika talaga ang tunay na siste ng production at nais na magkaroon din ng collaboration ang lahat ng kurso at hindi lang ito ikulong sa broad,” Samson said.

“Paparo” became an entry for Cine Republica 2017, Sine Gitnang Luzon, Cinema Rehiyon IX, North Luzon Film Festival, and Viddsee Juree, which is a competition for Asian short films.

“Krusanto” also bagged the Viewer’s Choice Award, Best Sound Design and Best Cinematography.

Magsakay, comparing “Krusanto” with his previous film, “Paparo”, shared that both films fall under the same genre which he admitted as his style. “‘Yong favorite genre ko kasi na ginagawa sa mga pelikula ko ay may touch of Filipino culture lagi at mga stories na unknown pero nag-e-exist. Isa pang common characteristic ng “Krusanto” at “Paparo” ay pareho silang mabibigat na films,” Magsakay said. The film “Evadere” under the direction of Trisha Shaina Gatchalian of BAB 4D took home the Best Screenplay and Best Actress award while “Sa Katapusan”, a film by Reena Casamayor from BAB 3B won the Best Actor award.

ing a theme, displayed diversity. However, comparisons with the past SiBul film festivals were still present.

Since SiBul VIII has shown fewer films compared to SiBul VII, which screened twice the number of this year’s SiBul, viewers expressed their desire to witness more films.

Despite the decrease in the number of entries, students like Ciara Marcelo, from BAB 3D, believes that SiBul film festival must continue since it has become an avenue for learning to benefit the college’s future filmmakers. “Dapat siyang ipagpatuloy kasi ito ‘yong nagiging stepping stone ng bawat aspiring directors, actors and anything under production team para maimprove ‘yong skills nila, ma-explore ‘yong kakayahan nila… at maka-gain rin ng experience,” Marcelo said. SiBul is an annual film festival exhibiting short films produced by CAL students. The festival, spearheaded by BulSU Cinephilia, happens during the CAL awareness week celebration.
