The greater Blue Hill Peninsula region encompasses the towns of Blue Hill, Brooklin, Brooksville, Castine, Deer Isle, Penobscot, Sedgwick, Stonington, and Surry. The landscape here is marked by sweeping views, blueberry fields, farmland, and the beautiful Maine coast. Tucked in among the ridges, valleys and the jagged coastline, you’ll find adventure of all kinds, from a day on the water or hiking on our many public conservation lands, an afternoon of gallery tour and shopping, to an evening dining out or of live music at a local brewery. You’ll find our communities to be diverse, independent yet interconnected. Anywhere on the Peninsula, you may strike up a conversation with a lobsterman, boatbuilder or sailor who knows these waters like the back of their hand. You will find locally sourced food and highly skilled craftspeople and artists in every town and village in our region. And anywhere you go from Stonington to Penobscot, you’ll find evidence of the resourcefulness, dry wit and creativity that has defined our region’s culture for centuries. This region was home to the Wabanaki People before the arrival of Captain Joseph Wood and John Roundy in 1762. The early economy centered around ship building and quarrying. Lumbering, lobstering, fishing and farming have played an important role in our economy and culture since the earliest days. By the late 1800’s the region had become a summer destination. Today, many of these industries coexist with a thriving art, music and food scene to create this unique place called The Blue Hill Peninsula. Welcome. We’re so glad you came!

Continue on US-3/US-1 to Bucksport. Follow US-3/US-1 for about 4.5 miles and turn right onto ME-15 to Blue Hill. Or: Follow I-95 to Exit 28 in Brunswick. HISTORY
The Blue Hill Peninsula is home to a wealth of historical societies and museums whose treasures tell many rich and varied stories. What better way to learn what makes a town special then a visit to the historical society or town museum? Each is lovingly cared for and presented by members of the community who are eager to share with you, so why not take the time to visit, learn and be inspired. And with everyone’s new interest in “finding our roots,” a visit to a historical society or museum may be just what you need to discover that long lost relative!
BLUE HILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY AT THE HOLT HOUSE ON WATER ST. The Holt House (1815), and the carriage house, contain collections of antiques and artifacts, as well as archives, that tell the stories of Blue Hill families. A tour includes working tools and toys, costumes and carriages, glimpses of life during two centuries. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 1 - 4 p.m.from July 5 – Labor Day.
BROOKSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY, RTE. 176 ON BROOKSVILLE CORNER The collection at this historical society includes marine artifacts, blacksmithing and farming tools, along with genealogical information. Additional geneology resources, such as cemetery and vital records compilations are also housed on site. Hours: Wednesday and Sunday 1-4pm, July and August.
CASTINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY AT 17 SCHOOL ST., IN CASTINE Located in the 1859 Abbott School and 1850 Samuel P. Grindle House on Castine’s historic and picturesque town common, the Society serves as a window into Castine’s extraordinary past. Through its seasonal, permanent and changing exhibitions, lectures, town walking tours, and historic reenactments, the Historical Society reveals the historic treasures and stories still present throughout the town. The Castine Historical Society serves as a window into Castine’s extraordinary past. Our permanent and temporary exhibitions on the history of Castine, lectures, house and garden tours and historic reenactments occur from early June through Columbus Day.
WILSON MUSEUM AT 120 PERKINS ST., IN CASTINE Be prepared for a tour through time and cultures as you enter the Wilson Museum Campus, a series of buildings begun in 1921 by geologist Dr. John Howard Wilson to house collections gathered around the world and close to home. Here you will see rocks and fossils from the earliest geologic times and will follow humankind’s advances in tool-making from pre-history through Castine’s rich local history.

You can wend your way across continents and among indigenous cultures through displays from Africa, the Americas and Bali, to name just a few.
WOODLAWN MUSEUM, GARDENS & PARK, RTE. 172, IN ELLSWORTH Woodlawn is a 180-acre historic estate located a quarter mile from downtown Ellsworth, Maine. Once home to three generations of the Black family, it is now treasured for the Black House, its historic house museum, community and formal gardens, and its public park with walking trails. Visitors can explore a superb historic house, stroll through beautiful gardens, play croquet, hike on pristine trails, and much more.
FORT KNOX HISTORIC SITE, 740 FORT KNOX RD, PROSPECT, MAINE Located on the west bank of the Penobscot River in Prospect, Maine, in an area known as the Penobscot Narrows, Fort Knox is one of the best-preserved military fortifications on the New England seacoast. The fort has many unique architectural features, as well as a rich history behind its walls. During the country’s infancy, Maine was repeatedly involved in northeast border disputes with British Canada. In fact, the area between Castine and the rich lumber city of Bangor was invaded and occupied by the British during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Fort Knox was established in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River Valley against a possible future British naval incursion.

FARM TO TABLE The state of Maine has over 1.4 million acres in farmland (about 8,200 farms), 60% of which are held in small farms of less than 100 acres. Maine now ranks first in agricultural sales, in no small part due to the thriving network of farmers markets, farm stands, and to farm-to-table restaurants. Agricultural production on the Peninsula embodies the interdependence of culture, food and a healthy economy. This Peninsula is home to roughly 40 farms. They are all small family-run farms, committed to the land and to producing high quality produce, dairy and meat products. Farmers here produce year-round, despite our notorious winters. With a farmers market in every town, you’ll find farm stands all around the peninsula and you can even buy from the on-line farmers market FarmDrop, or can have a care package of locally produced goods delivered to you from Peninsula Provisions. Farm-to-table dining offers the finest collaboration between the regions talented chefs and its dedicated farmers. Across the Peninsula, chefs work with local food producers to deliver the finest dining experience - they can tell you where your steak or oyster was raised, what type of heirloom tomato you’ve been served and why the local cream makes the best flan. The peninsula’s farmers markets are homegrown, community driven markets offering a changing mix of farm products, including produce, meat, dairy and eggs. Local coffee roasters, tea producers, the local saltworks, beekeepers, bakers, fishermen & women, and craftspeople are also well-represented. BLUE HILL
Nestled between Blue Hill Mountain and the protective arm of Blue Hill Bay lies the town of Blue Hill. In 1762, the town’s founders sailed up the bay, disembarked at Mill Island near the reversing falls and built their homes there. Incorporated in 1789, Blue Hill first made a name for itself as a shipbuilding and lumber center, it’s sawmills and craftspeople turning out brigs and schooners, masts, cordwood, and shingles. Granite from Blue Hill was prized for its high quality and made its way to such notable buildings as the US Stock Exchange and the Brooklyn Bridge. By the mid-1800s, the town became a summer destination. Today, Blue Hill is rich with artists and craftspeople, excellent food, gracious lodging, art galleries and small shops. Blue Hill welcomes visitors and residents alike to hike its forests and to canoe, kayak and sail its waters. As a service center, the community offers excellent public and private schools, a library that has been the cornerstone of intellectual and social activity in town since its founding in 1796, and a full-service hospital. Blue Hill offers community events such as the traditional blueberry festival at the Congo Church, a summer concert series featuring the steel drum band Flash! in The Pans, classical music at Kneisel Hall and Blue Hill Bach, and theatrical productions by New Surry Theatre. The Memorial Day Parade, the well-known Blue Hill Fair, and both a winter and summer farmers market are just some of the social, recreational, and musical events Blue Hill has to offer.

BROOKLIN
A small, lively town at the southern end of the Peninsula, Brooklin was initially settled as part of the town of Sedgwick. Brooklin was incorporated independently in 1849. With miles of beautiful shoreline come the town’s chief industries of fishing and boatbuilding. The town is world-famous for its boatbuilding history and is home The Brooklin Boat Yard, The Wooden Boat School, and Wooden Boat Magazine, along with many smaller builders and design shops as well as artists, writers, musicians, and potters. Brooklin offers a charming town center with a beautiful library, small shops, galleries, groceries, and provisions. Along its winding roads, travelers will catch stunning glimpses of the Benjamin River and the Eggemoggin Reach. Brooklin hosts several well-known events each year, including the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta and a magnificent 4th of July parade.
BROOKSVILLE
The town of Brooksville dates back to the early 1800’s. It encompasses the villages of Harborside on Cape Rosier (also known simply as “the Cape”), South Brooksville, home to Buck’s Harbor Market and the white steepled church made famous by Robert McCloskey’s illustrations, North and South Brooksville, and Brooksville Corner. Brooksville’s rolling fields and woodlands, its coves and harbors and its seat at the mouth of the Bagaduce River make it a popular destination for boating, kayaking, hiking and for simply getting away from it all. Shell fishing, aquaculture and farming are staples of the town’s economy. In addition to several Blue Hill Heritage Trust shoreline and scenic trails, the area is home to Holbrook Island Sanctuary State Park on Cape Rosier which offers 7.5 miles of oceanfront and woodland hiking, diverse ecosystems, and beach access.

CASTINE
Settled in 1604, the historic town of Castine is one of the oldest in the nation and the only town on the Peninsula to have been occupied at various times by the French, the Dutch and the English. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Penobscot River estuary, along with such colorful figures as Paul Revere and the Baron de St. Castin, made the town a notable trading and maritime center, and a prominent player in the fight for American independence. Today, Castine offers walking tours of its historic buildings, including three forts and Dyce’s Head Lighthouse. Its downtown offers a wonderful mix of architectural gems, gracious hospitality and fine dining. Shops and galleries dot the hilly streets leading down to the waterfront. Summer season in Castine offers something for everyone. 4th of July celebrations includes a parade, firetruck rides, hot dogs, watermelon, and a variety of children events on Town Common- a real “slice of Americana!” The day ends with an amazing firework display over our historic harbor. Also in July, we celebrate our French heritage with Bastille Day lectures, cooking demonstrations, kid-friendly events on Town Common and our Picnic en Blanc with hundreds, dressed in white, seated at a common table. And all summer long, the Castine Yacht Club hosts races on Penobscot Bay, in a variety of classes, including the Camden to Castine Classic Yacht Race. Throughout the summer, events and lectures are hosted by the Wilson Museum, Castine Historical Society, and our Witherle Library where parents and children alike learn of our rich and storied history from events like Revolutionary and Civil War encampments/reenactments.

Reachable by bridge, Deer Isle still retains some of the flavor of New England life in the 1950’s. A cluster of small communities, with about 3,000 residents, comprise the year round population.The schools, churches and community organizations are central in bringing the community together throughout the year. Public suppers, festivals, craft fairs, boat races, basketball games and other sports events, all contribute to a strong sense of community and Island pride. Lobstering is the mainstay of the economy although the diversity of the Island’s businesses draw many visitors from off Island. Internationally renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts has brought a wealth of artists and artisans to the Island, many of whom have chosen to live here permanently. Galleries and studios dot the island, and some are open year around by appointment.A wide variety of accommodations are available from inns, motels, rental cottages and campgrounds. Restaurants, coffee bars, antique shops, libraries, gift shops, bookstores and galleries/studios all offer a rich selection of places to visit, to browse and to Buy Local. Deer Isle is a paradise for photographers, birders, boaters/kayakers, artists, naturalists, and anyone who loves the outdoors. The area is home to Island Heritage Trust hiking trails, and several other conservancies are located on neighboring islands, including Acadia National Park land on Isle au Haut, accessible via Isle au Haut Boat Service. The mixture of sprucecovered islands, quiet coves, granite outcroppings, fields of lupine and wildflowers, lobster boats, windjammers, glistening waters and pristine winter snow make a visit to Deer Isle, at any time of year, an enriching experience.

PENOBSCOT
The small, quiet town of Penobscot was one of the earliest settlements on the Peninsula. The town encompasses 46.5 square miles that include two small mountains, two large ponds, a ridge of fertile farmland, several blueberry fields, a peat bog, a large freshwater pond, and more than 18 miles of shoreland on Northern Bay and the Bagaduce River, and is a popular destination for birding, leisure fishing, kayaking, and boating. Incorporated in 1787, the town remains a treasure trove of the region’s history. The Penobscot Historical Society and the town host an annual celebration of the town during Penobscot Days in mid-summer.

The town of Sedgwick was incorporated in 1798 and named after Major General Robert Sedgwick who ousted the French from neighboring Castine. Early settlers found the land more suitable to grazing, quarrying and logging, due to the long, rocky ridge that runs between the Bagaduce river and Salt Pond. Today, blueberry barrens dot the landscape, offering scenic views. Sedgwick is home to what is arguably one of the most photographed views in the state of Maine. Caterpillar Hill affords a sweeping vista across blueberry fields to Penobscot Bay and Camden in the west, south to Isle au Haut, and east to Jericho Bay. The town’s coastline stretches along the shores of the Eggemoggin Reach, separating the Peninsula from Deer Isle. The mouth of the Benjamin River offers sailors and boaters a quiet cove. Sargentville, the unincorporated village in Sedgwick, is the gateway to Deer Isle. Sedgwick and Sargentville are home to several Blue Hill Heritage Trust Trails along the scenic Bagaduce River, artist studios, and local businesses like dining favorites El El Frijoles Mexican Restaurant.

SURRY
Surry is situated on the west bank of the Union River Bay, in Hancock County. On the north-east it is bounded by Ellsworth, on the south-west, by Blue Hill, on the west by Orland and Penobscot. Toddy Pond forms part of the boundary between Surry and Penobscot, and on the line between Surry and Ellsworth are the two Patten ponds whose outlet is Patten Stream. Fishways were constructed to connect these ponds in 1872 and have since been stocked with alewives and salmon. Every spring, alewives return to Patten Bay and can be seen from the town landing making their way up a manmade fish passage to Patten Stream to reach their freshwater spawning grounds from the sea. Surry is home to several Blue Hill Heritage Trust hiking trails, scenic peninsula drives, and rocky beaches. Seasonal eatery, Perry’s Lobster Shack, offers oceanfront dining, while yearround Pugnuts Ice Cream Shop is open for year-round treats.
