SYNOPSIS

Three directors travel along the Trans Siberian Railway from Moscow To Beijing. A personal experience, a journey in a virtual society, the train, in continuous movement and transformation like the lands that it crosses. A travel through memories and dreams, through reality and imagination. The Russian director, Darya Zhuk, will imagine the train as a time machine in which past and future – tradition and innovation, coexist. A travel in space and time, a journey through past memories (Bolshevik Revolution, Second World War, end of communism, opening towards the west) and events of the present (the influence of consumerism). Through the personal stories of its travelers, she will shed light upon small fragments of a mosaic shattered to pieces with the fall of the socialist dream. The Chinese director, Yan Yan Mak, will imagine the journey as a metaphor for life: «Life is a long trip; a trip, a short life». She will follow the travel of EG, a famous Chinese hip hop dancer from Hong Kong who will dance aboard the train the Cossack Dance he discovered on YouTube. EG’s passion for this astounding dance represents for the Chinese director the perfect synthesis between past and future, between the preservation of our own cultural identity and the attraction towards new frontiers of the future. EG will consider this trip a kind of creative meditation. A getaway from Hong Kong norms and rules of the daily routine in search for The Balance between «traditional & modern». «physical & mental». «visual & sensible». «passion & calm». «loneliness and happiness». The Italian director, Elisa Fuksas will take the train not as a journey, nor as a mere means of transportation, but as an experiment. Her intent is to display, by the most neutral observation, the space of the journey as an «oneirical scene» where the consciousness and subconsciousness of the passengers may eventually meet. It is indeed a documentary about people’s dreams and imagination.

SYNOPSIS

Another unbearably hot day begins in Rio de Janeiro. ANDREA rich, spoiled and to her chagrin, a little chubby and still a virgin is just getting back from a night out with RICARDO, but the casual encounter isn’t going well. To sustain her date’s waning interest, she calls on GRILO, her novice drug dealer, to keep the party going. But when he delivers and she fails to pay him, Grilo and his partner TONHO brother to the drug lord TORORO, Grilo’s employer – walk into an unsuspecting bakery to try to make up for the lost cash. JOSE, a desk cop who has never had to draw his weapon let alone use it, is having his routine morning coffee inside when TONHO loses it and shoots his friend, the bakery clerk, forcing a reluctant Jose into lethal action. To make matters worse, little did Jose know that his first kill had been the drug lord’s brother, and that according to Rio’s tough street laws, he had just signed his own death sentence. A few blocks over, SILVIA, has just gotten the news that she is pregnant but the father isn’t her husband JOE, but her boss, GABRIEL, who also happens to be the lawyer running TORORO’s legit empire. This sequence of events produces a ripple effect and sets off a chain reaction that unfolds over a 24-hour period, showing how the lives of these interconnected characters become increasingly intertwined, commenting on issues of social class, race, poverty and above all responsibility, leading these characters’ destinies hurling towards one, final climax. Logline In a small mountain village in Uzbekistan, Bibicha, a young woman, suddenly refuses to speak. The reason of her vow of silence remains mysterious; does she desire the return of her disappeared beloved or is she scared of an illicit pregnancy? an arresting portrait of four women trying to find their place within the still archaic social order of an Uzbek village. Synopsis In a small mountain village in Uzbekistan, Bibicha, a young woman, suddenly refuses to speak. The reason of her vow of silence remains mysterious; does she desire the return of her disappeared beloved or is she scared of an illicit pregnancy? Scared of the neighbours’ gossip, her mother hides Bibicha in the grandmother’s house. There Bibicha shares a room with Khamida, a woman who returned to the village after year’s of absence. During Bibicha’s forty days of silence, this family of women whose destinies seem to repeat from generation to generation confront their past and future and will come to terms with their destinies. 40 days of silence is an arresting portrait of four women trying to find their place within the still archaic social order of an Uzbek village. It opens up a space for a feminist, differentiated and poetic view on women in a rural Muslim society with its traditions of strong family ties and ancient role models without ever falling back onto ostentatious accusations typical of Western readings. The story also affords us an insight into a very contemporary conflict of a Central Asian, post Soviet country that’s struggling with its sense of culture and to get to grips with its various contradicting layers and histories. SYNOPSIS

One Jacket. Ten Owners. A dialogue between body and soul. The film story follows the life of a men’s black leather Jacket size 46. The Jacket has the faculty of observing and analyzing the actions and the thoughts of its owners. It starts the story from the designers’ studio of an Italian artist, who creates its form – cut, colour, size, seams, pockets, zippers. The designer hands over the Jacket to the owner of a boutique for leather clothing. A fashion art directress decides to use the Jacket in a photo session – the owner of the Jacket becomes a model with luxury perfume, long fingers and several love affairs. The directress returns the jacket to the boutique, where a rich, 50-year old lady buys it. She decides to give it as a present to her husband for his birthday jubilee. The husband banker likes the Jacket and takes it with him on a business trip to Bulgaria, where he meets his mistress. Having been followed by the jealous husband of the mistress, the lovers are attacked and both the Jacket and the banker are stabbed with a knife. Trying to hide the evidence of his deeds, the husband throws the Jacket into a garbage container. An old totter discovers the Jacket. Two young men attack him and take away the Jacket. They decide to sell it in the nearest second-hand shop. The owner of the second-hand shop buys the Jacket and takes it to the dry cleaner’s. One day, a Russian rock musician, vocalist, falls in love with the Jacket, buys it from the second-hand shop and demonstrates it to his group. The musicians are getting ready for an important concert. On the day of the performance, the vocalist takes off his Jacket and throws it in the audience. The Jacket gets into the hands of a teenage boy, who, unbelieving his good luck, runs home with the valuable object. The parallel structure of the action – the story of the Jacket and the story of its owners – becomes the starting point of a dialogue between body and soul.

SYNOPSIS

1930s. Leningrad, Russia. The focus of this film is an image of the poet, writer and dramatist Daniil Kharms (Daniil Ivanovich Yuvachyov) seen from the present day. The film is not biographical but an attempt to create a reasoned and accurate image of a man whose life is devoted exclusively to his art and consists of a never-ending game ‘in all seriousness’, a game that absorbs him as intently as a child in play. Running throughout the film is the theme of a union of friends joined by common positions in their understanding of life and art. A basic approach to the construction of the film should be a combination of different degrees of reality and conditionality in artistic representation. Facts from the life of Kharms are glimpsed through a fabric woven from his fantasy. Storytelling is built on the basis of real-life occurrences known to us from various sources and ‘incidents’ in his prose, on the interlacing of several dramatic lines important for our comprehension: relations with his father and with friends in his literary circle, his love-life, his conflict with the realities that surrounded him. The world portrayed at the beginning of the film maintains a certain equilibrium and life seems feasible in this context, but gradually this world grows more and more threatening. Increasingly it invades Kharms’ life so that writing becomes impossible and genuine human connections are broken off. The accumulating general motif is revealed in his fate – the tragic destruction of individual human identity. Through his specific surroundings – objects, everyday life, characters, reverberations from certain events – the world in the film is seen through the eyes of Kharms the artist. This should be shown by means of a gradual confusion in the actual correlation of space and man. Kharms becomes a kind of Gulliver and the city diminishes and loses its real-life proportions – through the windows of Kharms’ apartment we see ‘all St Petersburg’ at once. In this way the total environment participates in the creative act and Kharms is absolute, the natural primacy of creation over life.

Art Title – Побег в небо. Девятаев. Genre – Historical thriller Country (s) – Russia Shooting dates – April – August 2011 Locations – Russia, Germany Total Budget – 6 500 000 $ Financiers/Partners – Gorvernment

of Mordovia, Karo Premier Confirmed Financing – 1 500 000 $ (23%) Producers – Denis Filyukov Director – Nikolay Lebedev Photography – Yuri Nevskiy Scriptwriter – Aleksnadr Sokolov

SYNOPSIS

Film «Escape to the sky. Devyataev» is an exciting adventure based on fact story. On 8 February 1945 a group of Soviet army prisoners consisted of 10 persons captured the German bomber Heinkel He 111 H-22 and escaped on it from the island. Devyataev piloted it. The Germans sent the fighter plane in pursuit of the bomber, but it couldn’t find them. The plane was detected by the fighter plane of Luftwaffe pilot Helmut Berngardt returning after the mission, but he didn’t execute the order of the German command to «shoot down the lonely Heinkel». Question: «Why didn’t Helmut Berngardt down the bomber piloted by the prisoners?» – remained without an answer… And maybe, finally the authors of the film will be able to reveal what happened between Mikhail Devyataev and Helmut Berngardt in the sky in February, 1945. The main hero – Devyataev – goes through three German concentration camps. It’s a terrible ordeal for a one man. In the camps Devyataev, as well as his fellow inmates see and experience terrible things. Here, like in the purgatory, everyone has to know oneself: either to find point of support, become stronger and survive, or to give up and die. Devyataev tried to escape for the first time in August 1944, but it was unsuccessful attempt. The escapee was caught, declared a prisoner sentenced to death. But soon he was sent to the island of Usedom where engineering of the Third Reich’s new weapon – V-1 cruise missiles and V-2 ballistic missiles – was carried out in the Peenemünde missile center. Antiwar theme sets the tone of the whole narration in the film. All wars unleashed by every «Hitlers» in the name of their own goals are in fact anti-humane. «Hitlers» send armies to fight, seeing only murder machines in them. We show through the images of Helmut Berngardt and Devyataev that ordinary alive people, with hearts and souls, whether the Germans or the Russians, are sent to fight. And at a certain moment they understand that nothing justifies the war between them. COMPANY

Script is addressing experience of intellectual elite, which was forcefully removed from Latvian society, through arrests, imprisonment and extermination during Stalin’s regime. The main character is Irma, university professor in her 30-ies sent to Siberia for nonessential crime. Despite of surrounding brutality she is able to maintain humanity herself and to find it in other people. What is different in this story – specifics of every day existence in un-human conditions. It is reminder of simple things, which are substantial, simple behavior, which is heroic. It is about reliance on humanity, it is about finding humanity in un-expected places: young solder opens door of prison truck, to get fresh air, poems, which women read to each other on the way to Siberia, mute prisoner, who defends woman from rape, prison officers learning literature from released prisoner. Life in complexity is concern of «Siberian Triangle». COMPANY

SYNOPSIS

The story is set in the post-war Kaliningrad, in the late autumn of 1947. Once the former German city of Königsberg becomes part of the Soviet Union, the new area gets populated by Soviet settlers, according to Joseph Stalin’s decree. By that time, some 130,000 German civilians were registered and lived in the city and surrounding area. A young couple, Masha and Kolya, come as recruited settlers and move into a building, not suspecting that its former owners, a German family including Martha, her old father and her daughter Hannah, are now living in the basement of the same house. Russian settlers, who come from the areas recently liberated from German occupation and who were also instructed by Soviet agitators, fear Germans. Along with the main problem – the language barrier, – they feel distrust, hatred and suspicion to all things German, beginning with failure to understand the German lifestyle and ending with a completely different landscape. In turn, Germans fear Russians as winners. Overcoming their distrust and the language barrier, the two families come into contact with each other, little by little. COMPANY
