Everywhere in Cuba, you encounter places where time seems to have stood still. At the same time, the island is modern and is developing a vaccine that will also be offered to tourists. Cuba can be discovered very directly on a bicycle. Whoever approaches this too doggedly, however, has not understood the island. It is better to surrender to the Caribbean way of life and to experience the island intensively off the road. Meet the rhythm of its people and take time for a good coffee, Cuba Libre, Mojito or Piña Colada. "This island is probably the most beautiful island that man's eyes have ever seen", wrote Christopher Columbus more than 500 years ago in his shipboard diary. Many cyclists who conquer the island certainly write the same in their logbook. The lively capital Havana with its Fords and Chevis of the 50ies, endless sandy beaches with crystal blue sea and the mountains of the Sierra Maestra at the southern tip of the island. Especially for bikers the Caribbean island has a lot to offer.
Current situation & entry
Cuba has been relatively little affected by the Corona pandemic. Upon entry, a negative PCR test
in paper form must be carried, which must be no more than 72 hours old upon arrival and issued by a certified laboratory.
Upon arrival at the airport, entrants must undergo another PCR test. A health declaration must be made at the airport.
Biking in Cuba
If you travel to Cuba individually and expect to find a spotless bike complete with signposted touring tips, you will be disappointed. It is better to turn to an experienced bike tour operator like Bike Adventure Tours from Switzerland.
Tours
Those who take on the adventure of Trans-Cuba (the crossing of the island from east to west) on "La Ruta Mala" will cover about 1,384 kilometers and conquer about 32,000 meters of altitude from Santiago de Cuba via Havana to the La Guire National Park and should plan 20-30 days for this sporting highlight.
