RGS CRICKET SIXES TOURNAMENT
Welcome to the 2024 Reigate Grammar School Cricket 6s. This event is now in its fourteenth year at RGS’s Hartswood Sports Ground.
I am always pleased and proud to invite visitors to school to show the vast array of talent we have, not only in traditional areas such as sport, music, art and drama but also in the many informative and enrichment events held each term for RGS students, their parents and other guests. There is so much more to a great education than merely lessons and exam results.
At RGS we never forget that and this event gives the students a chance to test their performance instincts, stretch their aspirations just a little further and, I hope, be able to leave the pitch just a little more secure in their confidence and self-esteem. The experiences and character development that can take place beyond the classroom are so important. Whether on local or exotic school trips, on the sports field, in the art studio, in concerts, matches, house events or other opportunities – that is where character is both revealed and developed.
Thank you to all who have made this event possible and of course to you, our parents and visitors, for your continued support.
With best wishes
Shaun Fenton HeadmasterWelcome to the 2024 Reigate Grammar School Cricket 6s.
We are extremely grateful to the RGS groundstaff, for their continued support and their hard work leading up to and on the day of the event. Also, our thanks go to our Head of Cricket, James Leck, whose support has been excellent. Each year we organise Junior Cricket 6s tournaments for many schools, both local and from further afield. This year the number of age groups includes tournaments for U10, U12 and U13.
This festival of Cricket 6s tournaments will see more than 450 children take part from primary schools, preparatory schools and secondary schools in the state and independent sector, across London, the South East, the South and East Anglia.
The action-packed timetables add to the festival atmosphere, where some of the finest junior cricketers in the region can enjoy a fun tournament, in the company of their mates whilst testing their skills.
Good luck to all schools and competitors - enjoy the day!

PLAYERS
1. Players must be:
a. U10 Competition: All players must be in Year 5 or below.
b. U13 Competitions: All players must be in Year 8 or below.
c. U12 Competition: All players must be in Year 7 or below.
2. A maximum of seven players is allowed per squad.
3. Within each match, no substitutions are allowed, including changing the wicket-keeper, except in the circumstances when a player is unable to continue – in this situation the opposition coach must be consulted, and the organiser has the final say in any dispute.
THE MATCH
4. Normal cricket laws apply, except:
a. Each match will be a 1 innings per side, 5 overs per innings, 6-a-side contest. Each outfielder bowls one 6-ball over.
b. Wides and no-balls will count for 2 runs plus any further runs (e.g. a wide that goes for 4 will count as 6 wides), an extra ball will not be bowled on the first occasion in each over, but an extra ball will be bowled on any subsequent occasions. There are no free-hits.
c. Any ball bowled down the leg-side, given the batsman’s original stance, which is not touched by the batsman, is a wide.
d. Any ball which bounces twice before reaching the wicket is a no-ball.
e. A batter reaching 13 (or more) runs must retire unless there are no other batsmen to come in, but can return on the dismissal or retirement of four other players. If two or more batsmen have retired, the retired batsmen may return in any order.
f. Each innings must not last more than 20 minutes (both teams’ responsibility), with 3 minutes for the change of innings. A new batsman must be at the crease within 1 minute of a dismissal or retirement.
g. The team listed first in each group fixture will bat first. There will be no toss for group matches. There will be a toss for semi-finals and finals.
5. Players are expected and required to adhere to the spirit of cricket; sharp practices may be punished at the discretion of the tournament organiser. In particular, no player should:
• intentionally lose his wicket
• intentionally avoid dismissing an opposition batter
• intentionally concede runs
RESULTS
6. Scorecards will be filled in by the third umpire who must be supplied with names of the six players prior to the start of the match by each contesting team’s manager. At the end of the game, scorecards will be submitted to control by a representative of the winning team immediately after the completion of the match.
7. In group matches, points will be awarded as follows:
• 5 points: Victory by 10 or more runs or with an over or more to spare.
• 4 points: Victory by 9 or fewer runs or with less than an over to spare.
• 3 points: Tie in which fewer wickets were lost.
• 2 points: Tie in which equal or more wickets were lost.
• 1 point: Loss by 5 or fewer runs or with 3 or fewer balls remaining.
• 0 points: Loss by 6 or more runs or with 4 or more balls remaining.
8. Positions in each group are decided according to the following hierarchy of criteria:
• Points won
• Calculated net run difference
• Most wickets taken
• Fewest wickets lost
• Toss of a coin
• n.b. Calculated net run difference is simple if the team batting first wins or ties, or if the chasing team wins off the last ball. Should the chasing team win earlier, a calculation based on the balls faced and wickets lost will be made to predict what they would have totalled.
9. U13 Boys’ competition
• The winners in all groups will progress to the Cup.
• The runners-up in all groups will progress to the Plate.
• The third placed in all groups will progress to the Bowl.
• Cup, Plate and Bowl are then a knock-out competition; the 4th and 5th ranked qualifiers will contest a quarter-final, whereas the 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranked qualifiers will get a bye to the semi-final, in each competition.
10. U12 Boys
• The winners of groups A, B and C will progress to the group C 1.
• The winners of groups D, E and F will progress to the group C 2.
• The runners-up of groups A, B and C will progress to the group P 1.
• The runners-up of groups D, E and F will progress to the group P 2.
• The thirds of groups A, B and C will progress to the group B 2.
• The thirds of groups D, E and F will progress to the group B 1.
• The winners of groups C 1 and C 2 will contest the final of the Cup.
• The winners of groups P 1 and P 2 will contest the final of the Plate.
• The winners of groups B 1 and B 2 will contest the final of the Bowl.
11. U10 Boys & U13 Girls
• The winners of groups A, B and C will progress to the Cup group.
• The runners-up of groups A, B and C will progress to the Plate group.
• The thirds of groups A, B and C will progress to the Bowl group
10. In the event of a tie in a final, wickets will be taken into account. If teams are still level, a super over will decide the contest, with the chasers in the original match batting first. Should this be a tie, the team losing fewer wickets will win; if still tied, the team batting first in the super over will be the winner.
