Remembrance Service Armistice Day is on 11 November and is also known as Remembrance Day. It marks the day WWI ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918. It is an opportunity to remember all the people who have died in wars – not just WWI. At RGS the whole school gathered to remember everyone who has died or been affected by conflicts around the World.

Two thought provoking poems, written by RGS students, were read. We were also fortunate that a former RGS student currently serving in the Army, spoke to us about the importance of Remembrance Day. The CCF sounded The Last Post and at 11am the whole school observed a two minute silence. We will remember them.

Macmillan Coffee Morning On Friday the 25th of October, 1st and 2nd form had a cake sale for the Macmillan. Charity. They two years made hundreds of cakes to be sold to raise money for this fantastic charity. In particular, Tyra L who made an astounding 50 cakes! Macmillan do supportive work for the families and victims of cancer, which is an amazing cause. We are proud to say we raised an amazing £457.67

Children in Need Children in Need provide money for projects in the UK which focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged. They support both large and small charities and organizations across the UK. Children in need are currently supporting 2,400 projects all across the UK. The projects funded assist children facing a range of disadvantages such as poverty and deprivation; children who have been the victims of abuse or neglect as well as disabled young people. The programs are open all year round for applications. They give small sums of money four times a year and then larger amounts three times a year. In 2019 alone, the donations from the BBC live show equated to £47,886,382. RGS were proud to support with a mufti day; for which everyone had to bring in a pound for charity and they also had people kicking balls at our head teacher, Mr Fenton, and all the money raised will be donated to Children in Need Charity. Read-a-thon in Aid of St. Catherine’s Hospice Last term the 2nd form took part in a read-a-thon where they were challenged to read as many books as they could in a term and to raise money for St. Catherine’s Hospice. Felicity from St Catherine’s Hospice came into assembly to let the year group know how their fundraising efforts help support the local charity. She told the pupils the St. Catherine’s Hospice was established in 1983 and they are experts in end of life care. They are the leading provider of hospice care in Sussex and East Surrey, helping around 2,100 terminally ill people, their family members, friends, and carers each year. They provide expert hospice care, when and where they are needed most. Their skilled teams are on hand to support people living with terminal illness in their homes, in their Day Hospice and on their wards. Their care is only possible, thanks to the generosity of the local community who donate to and volunteer with them. Each year around £7.5 million is donated by their supporters and more than 1,000 people volunteer to help give their tailored care when people need them most. Community support means they are there when life comes full circle. Josh W in the 1st form and his dad set up ‘The Big Pants Campaign’ in aid of St. Catherine’s Hospice and they are aiming to raise £100,000. The 2nd form raised an amazing £1447.35 in

House Singing Congratulations to Cranston who won House Singing this year!

Sports Round Up Girls' A Team Hockey This term the Girls' Hockey A team have had many successes. They have taken part in a National Competition and reached the third round. They are also competing in the UKSA tournament and are going to take part in the semi -finals soon. The girls have achieved many wins, such as a 4-1 win against Kent College Pembury, but unfortunately lost 0-10 against Alleyn's school. They have also amazingly won all their matches on their hockey tour in Taunton. Good luck to the girls next term! By Martha C

Rugby We have fielded A-D teams and had many successes over the term. The Highlight for the A team was winning against Colfes and St. John’s. The B Team have been very successful winning 11 of their 14 fixtures with outstanding results against Hurst Pierpoint 70-0 and Tiffin School 505 . The C team have had a tough season but learnt much throughout to finish with a win against KCS. The D team also won against KCS playing some great rugby.

Girls’ B Team Hockey Our hockey this season has been a combination of ups and downs but we have progressed as a team and as individuals. Defending tips that we have learnt include, protecting the house, making sure to keep between the ball and the goal, and keeping wide whilst in attack. All of these are very important and shape the way we play. Our most prominent goal scorers have been, Sophia S and Alleke A who have both contributed significantly, scoring some beautiful shots. During the season we have scored 30 goals between us, and our largest win was 10-1 against Queens’ college. Many of the B team went on the Taunton Hockey Tour last month, on which we won 3 out of 4 matches. The experience really helped us to evolve our game, play against different opponents and have lots of fun with our team. Everyone this season has enjoyed their hockey and we can’t wait to play full pitch next year! By Amika S and Issie G

Table Tennis We entered a team in the District competition and played against RAAS, De Stafford and Reigate School. Finlay, Eddie and Byron played some great matches. They won and lost some but overall learnt lots and had a great time.

Sports Round Up

Football The second year boys took part in two football matches this term. With fourteen boys on the team each time, the boys unfortunately lost against Ryde School with Upper Chine, but luckily managed to scrape a 1-0 win against St Bede's. The girls were also trialed for a girls football team as part of a cup tournament, however they were sadly defeated by Ardingly College in the first round. By Leila B

Taunton Hockey Tour On Friday 15th – Sunday 17th, a group of First and Second Form players went on tour to Taunton. We headed straight to our first match against All Hallow’s school. The scores were: A team 5-0 , B team 4–2 to Reigate! We then set off to Wellington School, and again won, with scores of A 2-0 and B 1-0. Once we’d finished our dinner, provided by Wellington, we journeyed to the hotel we were staying in. We checked into the rooms, and were allocated some downtime. On the Saturday, after a hearty buffet-style breakfast, we played Queen’s College. Another full win for RGS, 4-1 for the A Team, 10-1 for the B Team. After match teas, we went back to the hotel for a bit of downtime, before departing to Hollywood Bowl. We played in the arcade while it was growing dark (though it was only about 4!), then went back to the hotel for even more downtime, and some swimming! After all that was over, we went to Pizza Express for the evening, finishing off a very fun day with some pizza! On our last day, we played Taunton Vale Hockey Club, and our scores were 1-0 for the U13a 0-3 for the U13b Team, 7-2 for the U12a Team and 4-2 for the U12b Team. Not as good as our previous matches, but still very impressive, considering how tired we were from two days of hockey, bowling and swimming! We then stocked up on sweets, cakes, crisps, popcorn, and other treats provided by the Taunton Vale Hockey Club parents, and waved goodbye to Taunton. The trip was immensely enjoyable, and if I could, I would definitely go again! Elizabeth S

Music, Music, Music The Cabaret Night On the 8th of November the cabaret night was placed, and it was a huge success, many parents, grandparents, and friends came to watch this amazing evening. Many students participated in this evening concert and I think they would all agree with me saying that it was a fun and amazing experience ! All of the songs that were performed were outstanding but I would have to point out the song ‘Speechless’ performed by Nithya S which sent shivers down the audiences spine and tears in their eyes and the hilarious song ‘Mr Cellophane’ performed by Adam L which sent everyone into uncontrollable laughter! But everyone performed with so much confidence that I think everyone did great and none of the audience could tear their eyes away. Tyra L Tenors Unlimited On Saturday 9th of November Tenors Unlimited and junior and senior voices sung at Harlequin with Chinthurst. It was an fantastic evening from 7pm-10pm and both senior and junior voices sang with confidence and got lots of applause from the crowd. The tenors all sung amazingly and adding the RGS children just added the finishing touch. It was a great night and everyone really enjoyed it! Tyra L Dorking Halls At Dorking Halls many instrumental bands performed many beautiful songs. It was a grand night and the audience much enjoyed the music judging by the round of applause the crowd gave. I think every band member quite enjoyed performing that night and it was a great experience. Tyra L

Trips The Science Museum Trip Back before the half term, the second form set out on a trip to…. London’s Science Museum. Activity day was a great success, and a day which everyone enjoyed. When we got to the museum, we were given out booklets, which we definitely filled in… maybe. We walked around in our groups, doing different activities, looking at all the fascinating objects in the maths room, playing around in Wonderlab, and finally, shopping! We went into a room dedicated to engineering the future, where some of us played the interactive games. In the same area, was a section with driverless cars, where many people played the game ‘Rugged Rovers’. Another section of the museum we explored, was the Cipher exhibition, where we learnt about the birth of cryptography, and some of us tried to crack the code machines in there…before giving up! One of the sections we all most enjoyed, was the amazing ’WONDERLAB’, where we got to take a look at some of the wacky and weird elements of science! We all loved the funny mirrors, and the slides, which we obviously enjoyed for their scientific value (?). Finally, we went into an amazing room, full of things to look at…the shop! After a long day of being amazed, we had a quick look around the shop, and some of us bought souvenirs, before heading back to the coach! Jasmine W

Berlin Christmas Market DAY 1: Once we got to the hostel, we dumped our bags in the only room which was ready and then went out to the Kino museum. Then we went to the Christmas market where we started buying gifts. We then went bowling. Then we finally managed to get back to the hotel and I'm pretty sure that everyone was relieved to sit down. We also enjoyed table football which was in the reception. DAY 2: We went to Checkpoint Charlie and another Christmas market. We enjoyed another day of long walks. We managed to go to the same Christmas market and roamed around it and the mall, where we could get our lunch and then we watched Frozen 2. DAY 3: After we had breakfast and checked out of the hotel, we went to the Jewish museum and the German parliament, after which we retrieved our luggage, went to the airport and flew home. Charity The Children’s Trust,Tadworth 2 pupils of 2nd form got the pleasure of going to the Children’s Trust in Tadworth on the 28th of November. When I and Piers went we were first talked through a little bit of what they do there, after we learned a bit about it we were shown some of the older children’s games lesson. We saw 4 children all doing different activities, one doing some bowling, one doing some tennis, one playing with a ball and one sleeping. You see this games lesson is very different to how our games lesson would be, as most of their lessons are to help them get back their senses, like touch and see. Many of the children would have been in an accident and been diagnosed with mental damage and some born with a mental illness. Even though most of them are in a really hard condition helpers and workers at the Children’s Trust always keep there spirits up and try to help them get back their main senses, so that they can be better. It was a great experience and it really showed that you should be grateful for what you have and try to love your life. Tyra L

Opportunities Never Second Best (NSB) is a club for 2nd Form students only. It gives us the chance to discuss what we have been doing as a year group and raise aware-ness of what the year group has been doing for the whole school. We produce a detailed newsletter every term, describing events such as house competitions, book reviews and music concerts. It will help you develop the necessary life skills of leadership, teamwork, IT, design, reporting and writing. NSB is a great club that combines a range of talents as well as the opportunity to get to know more people in the year group. If you are thinking of joining or have anything at all to say, please come along to one of our meetings, which are held every week on a Thursday from 1:30 in HC11 or get In touch with one of the team!
