TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR
HEADMASTER
A big welcome to RGS Hartswood today for our annual Reigate Charity 7s.
I am thrilled that Reigate Grammar School is able to host another Charity 7s event here at our Hartswood Playing Fields.
I want to start by giving my sincere thanks to our dedicated grounds team (led by Nick Hobbs), who have done a great job preparing the venue today. I am thrilled that we are able to support the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity and have Harlequins and England player, Karl Dickson with us today. Karl will be refereeing the final and presenting trophies and awards at the conclusion of today’s tournament. We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors who share our passion for philanthropy through sport. In particular, I would like to thank David Meldrum of Meldrum Construction and everyone at Sports Arabia, Kukri Sports UK and Harrisons Catering for their continued partnership with this event. Indeed, all our commercial partners deserve our special thanks for their sporting generosity.

Tournament Director
After last year’s challenging weather, I’m hoping that the elements are kinder to us today. I am excited with the prospect of a great day of rugby with our friends and partner schools and to raise funds for charity. I am grateful to everyone who supports this important event and in particular to the sponsors who have worked in close collaboration with our own RGS Foundation. Today will bring together so many of the best features of today’s young people and we celebrate their talent, team work and personal dedication. Whilst winning is important, I welcome the traditional sporting values attributed to this great game and these cultural ingredients that make it so special. Today is also a crunch game for England against Ireland in this year’s Six Nations Championship. As an Englishman my best wishes go out to our young team on a very special journey – they are role models. Some of them, as well as many others who represent clubs in the Aviva Premiership, have played in this tournament. I’m quite sure there will be stars of the future on display here today at RGS Hartswood. Thank you to all who have worked so hard to make this event happen – staff, parents and pupils. Have a great day and you have my hearty welcome! Shaun Fenton

Karl was born in 1982 in Salisbury and attended Barnard Castle School. He was a product of the Bedford Blues Academy and made his debut for the senior team in 2004, making 100 appearances until 2009 when he joined Harlequins. Karl was named in the England Saxons squad of 2012 but was promoted to the England Squad for their tour of South Africa where he played. Interestingly, he replaced younger brother Lee (Northampton Saints) in the game against South African Barbarians.
He is considered as one of the best scrumhalves in the country and has appeared on 127 occasions, scoring three tries so far this season, for Harlequins. He is highly rated by Director of Rugby, Conor O’Shea. Karl was an integral part to the success of Harlequins winning the 2011/12 Aviva Premiership and is committed to the club until June 2015. Away from the field, Karl is pursuing a career in refereeing under the tutorage of former Test Referee, Chris White. He will referee the Tournament final today and is on the road to becoming the first professional rugby player to be a professional referee in England!

REIGATE CHARITY 7s 2014 TONBRIDGE SCHOOL 24-19 EPSOM COLLEGE Tonbridge School edge Epsom College 24-19 in an epic final. After several months of rain and miserable weather it was a welcome change and relief to be able to enjoy a festival of sevens rugby, held at the Reigate Grammar School’s Hartswood Sports ground on Sunday 02 March. The Reigate Charity 7s, regarded as one of the top school tournaments in the country, welcomed 32 boys and 10 girls U18 sevens teams on the day. In the Cup, Tonbridge School faced Epsom College in an epic final holding on in the final seconds to take a narrow victory 24-19. This was a thrilling match and refereed by Chris White RFU, a veteran of over 50 iRB Tests. Meanwhile, in the Plate Competition, Hampton School were more convincing winners over Portsmouth GS 26-5.

2014 winners Tonbridge School
In the Girls’ competition there was a highly competitive encounter between Worthing College and Filton College. Having a particularly strong start Worthing finished impressive winners 26-5. In the Girls’ Plate competition there was delight for the home crowd as Reigate Grammar School snatched victory 5-0 in a very tense final against a determined Epsom College team. Presentations were made by Wasps and England star Joe Launchbury who played in this tournament several years earlier. An established charity event, funds were raised for the Aplastic Anaemia Trust and the RGS Foundation’s Changing Lives campaign. As Joe remarked, “This is a wonderful event. It is wonderful to see so many young players working so hard for their teams but also having fun. It has been a great day and very enjoyable.” 2014 winners Worthing College

CHARITY INFORMATION The RGS Foundation’s Changing Lives campaign Reigate Grammar School was founded through the generosity and philanthropic support of Henry Smith in 1675. Throughout its long history the School has faced many challenges, particularly financial, yet shown formidable strength of character and resilience throughout. The 1675 Bursary Fund aims to transform lives by giving an opportunity to those whose potential is far greater than their financial means. Inspired by the philosophy of our founders, we recognise that such generosity enriches our School, enhances academic standards, social mobility, and widens educational opportunity.
