Reigate Charity 7s 2014 Sunday 2nd March 2014 10.00am – 4.00pm Reigate Grammar School Playing Fields, Hartswood
Scrumpix-Images
A message from the Headmaster I am delighted that RGS is able to host another Charity 7s tournament here at our Hartswood Playing Fields and given the terrible weather we have all experienced over recent months. We can all enjoy a great day of Rugby with friends and partner schools and also raise money for very good causes. I am grateful to all our sponsors who in partnership with the RGS Foundation have made the event possible. A day like today brings together so many of the best features of today’s young people – we celebrate their talent, team work and personal dedication. It is important to win, but not at all costs and today we will see that determination to succeed alongside traditional sporting values more important than ever in the 21st century For an English man, this tournament comes at a time when our national team is performing with such remarkable passion and endeavour. I was lucky enough to be witness to this on Saturday, at Twickenham, where youthful ambition , honesty and teamwork ensured a welldeserved victory. An individual who was marked out for special praise was Joe Launchbury. I am truly thrilled that he is able to support this event today and provide inspiration to us all. Thank you to all the parents, staff and students from so many schools who have worked hard to make this 7s tournament a success. Shaun Fenton – Headmaster, Reigate Grammar School
Thank you for your support! Welcome to Hartswood today for our charity sevens. Although for some weeks in doubt due to the weather, we are lucky to have received some calmer days and to have a dedicated grounds team led by Nick Hobbs – my sincere thanks go to them. I am thrilled that we are able to support the Aplastic Anaemia Trust. We are most fortunate to have Wasps & England star, Joe Launchbury, as our ▲ Sean Davey, Tournament Director special guest. Joe will be presenting trophies and awards at the conclusion of today’s tournament. We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors who share our passion for philanthropy through sport. In particular, I would like to thank everyone at Kukri Sports UK, Harrisons Catering and Lookers Mercedes-Benz for their continued support and encouragement with this event. Indeed, all our commercial partners deserve our special thanks for their sporting generosity and affiliation. Thank you to our dedicated team of staff and volunteers who are giving their time and energies to help make today a success. I am most grateful to Bob Ockenden (RFU) for organising the referees for today and to Wayne Barnes for leading the talent show - now a veteran of over 50 tests. Let’s hope the weather is kind! Sean Davey – Tournament Director

Charity Information The Aplastic Anaemia Trust is the only charity in the UK dedicated solely to research into aplastic anaemia and the support of patients and their families. Few people know about this disease despite the fact that it is as common as some types of leukaemia and just as devastating. Aplastic anaemia (AA) is a rare but serious acquired blood disorder, where the bone marrow fails to produce essential blood cells. Approximately 100-150 new patients are diagnosed with aplastic anaemia in the UK each year. Patient support provides free emotional support as well as expert, up-todate information about aplastic anaemia and the treatments available.
The RGS Foundation’s Changing Lives campaign - Reigate Grammar School was founded through the generosity and philanthropic support of Henry Smith in 1675. Throughout its long history the School has faced many challenges, particularly financial, yet shown formidable strength of character and resilience throughout. The 1675 Bursary Fund aims to transform lives by giving an opportunity to those whose potential is far greater than their financial means. Inspired by the philosophy of our founders, we recognise that such generosity enriches our School, enhances academic standards, social mobility, and widens educational opportunity. Aplastic Anaemia Trust
Special Guest: Joe Launchbury
The Aplastic Anaemia Trust was formed in 1999 from two organisations - the Marrow Environment Fund (MEF), originally set up in 1985, and the Aplastic Anaemia Support Group.
We are thrilled to welcome Joe Launchbury as our very special guest to the 2014 Reigate Charity Sevens. Born in Exeter, Joe Launchbury started playing rugby at Exmouth and began his professional career at Wasps in 2009/10. Joe joined Wasps on the advice of former Wasps player Will Green who had spotted the teenager playing for Worthing RFC at National 2 level. Joe had already shown his promise as a young rugby player but it wasn't until his arrival at Wasps that his real talent began to shine through. An 80-minute appearance on his Aviva Premiership debut against Leicester Tigers in February 2011 alongside six more matches earned Joe a call up to the England U20s. Joe played in the final game of the Six ▲ Joe Launchbury Nations Grand Slam winning campaign and played a vital role at the Junior World Cup, helping England to the final and later being named the England Players Player of the Tournament. Joe put in an impressive first full season at Wasps (2011/12), the result of which saw him called up to Stuart Lancaster's England senior squad for the summer tour to South Africa. He made his debut in an uncapped game for England against the Barbarians at Twickenham but was forced to return home before the first training session after a knee injury ended his summer. Last season was a huge breakthrough season for the 22 year old. He made 19 appearances for the Club, scored a try against Mogliano and won Man of the Match against Worcester Warriors at the beginning of the season. His early form in the beginning of the season earned him an England call-up for the Autumn Internationals and later the Six Nations of which he started all five fixtures and received rave reviews. Joe rounded off last season by picking up the Aviva Premiership ‘Best Young Player’ award and was selected for England duty during the summer. Joe has been a regular in this year’s 6 Nations team and has just enjoyed a win over Ireland at Twickenham last weekend. We are honoured to have Joe with us here today.
The MEF was originally created by relatives and friends of victims of aplastic anaemia (AA) and allied disorders. AA is a potentially life threatening form of bone marrow failure which can strike at any age but is particularly severe in children. It is as common as some types of leukaemia, and just as devastating, but very few people have heard of it. Many charities for research into leukaemia and its treatment were well established in 1985, but there was no organisation devoted to those rare diseases so like leukaemia in their outcome but not included in the cancer group. With money raised, The AAT has established and supported focussed research groups and provided specialist clinical facilities to improve the treatment of AA. Thanks in large part to the work of the trust, guidelines for AA care have improved throughout the UK and the disease is now well recognised by the haematology community. Additionally, the prognoses of those patients with the disease are no longer so bleak; twenty five years ago, no more than 3 in 10 AA patients survived for a year, but today as many as 8 in 10 will be restored to a good quality of life. For over 25 years, we have helped to save many people’s lives and improve the quality of so many others. We want to be able to continue our work and strive to understand and find a cure for this disease. This is why we need YOUR help in raising much needed funds.
