WELCOME

The autumn term has been another busy and successful period for RGS and we look forward to welcoming back the students for the spring term as we start 2025.

We welcomed new colleagues to the department: Mrs Kate Harris joined us as Assistant Director of Sport and Head of Netball, Mr Quentin Hoad as our Head of Football, and Mr Jake Maxwell took over as our new Head of Swimming.

Sport at RGS continues to evolve with an increased football programme in place and more than 150 students playing in extra-curricular sport every week. Our partnership with Dorking Wanderers FC means that their 1st XI Men now use RGS Hartswood as their main training base as we turn North Field into a football centre during the winter. The addition of a climbing wall has added another option to our co-curricular and games programme and the explosion of touch rugby has been a huge success with silverware won and large numbers participating in competition. We pledge to continue developing Great People Through Sport as our vision at RGS and our participation numbers are high, with more than 600 students taking part in extra-curricular sport each week. There are now more than 100 hours of sport played each week at RGS through at least 12 weekly before-school sports clubs, 20 weekly lunchtime sports clubs and 30 after-school sports clubs each term. If you multiply these hours by the number of children playing them, the number runs into the thousands of playing hours.

AUTUMN 2024 SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS

• International Exhibition Hockey Match at RGS Hartswood

• Girls U13 and U15 Football Festival at Dorking Wanderers FC, Meadowbank Stadium

• District Champions in all age groups and both genders for Cross Country with several teams represented at the Regionals and the U13 Girls through to the National Finals

• U16A Rugby team enjoyed an unbeaten season of block fixtures with only one loss in the National Competition

• Boys Touch Rugby success at District level at U12, U13, and U14

• England Rugby Player, Lizzie Hanlon, joining us to coach Girls’ Rugby

• Swimming galas galore and Surrey Relays success for boys’ and girls’ teams

• RGS Hockey Coach, Mr Sam Taylor, selected for Great Britain Men against Argentina

• Many individual honours across sports including Golf, Taekwondo, and more

We are increasingly focusing on Performance Sport development now that the base of opportunity and participation is well established. This starts with our core sports and we have been fortunate to bring in top swim and strength and conditioning specialists while maintaining our core group of experts in all fields. We will look to strengthening this further by appointing a Director of Cricket in the coming months.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS

Keep up to date with RGS Sport via the Weekly Sports Bulletin, published each Friday in the Headmaster’s bulletin.

We would love to hear about and celebrate your child’s sporting achievements. If you have a story you wish to share with us, please get in touch via: bulletin@reigategrammar.org or gjb@reigategrammar.org

Purpose: Sport will have a meaningful and memorable effect on the life of every student

Engagement : To ignite a passion for sport or physical activity in everyone that lasts a lifetime

Opportunity : Opportunities to sample and then to stretch all students in sport

Performance: Being the best you can beperformance is always what matters, not the result

Learner-Centred : Being learner-centred means putting the student first

Enjoyment : An unrelenting focus on positive experiences for all children and young people

HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORT

Supporting students to aspire for the best they can be irrespective of their starting point and with a longterm view of success is fundamental to our vision for sport. As part of this experience and to supplement coaching during games and after school sessions, the High-Performance Hub (HPH) provides access to experiences and performance habits that are designed to support and challenge in equal measure.

This term’s HPH included lunchtime sessions exploring topics such as habit building, controlling arousal and training methods. These subjects have prompted conversation and intervention across students and staff and we look forward to further opportunities throughout the spring and summer terms. A focus on holistic development and Great People Through Sport has underpinned the approach throughout. Students interested in academic enrichment can come along to a talk on “ Why do people perform better academically and show higher happiness if they play sport?” on Wednesday 30 April.

Our video analysis provision continues to provide feedback and learning opportunities for many. Mr Maxwell

is looking forward to introducing an activation programme for all sporting pupils, focussed on reducing lower limb injury and increasing physical robustness.

All Sport Scholars in Third Form and above as well as some in the younger years now have an assigned mentor from the wider Sports department and have met to discuss how they can best use the mentoring support. This service is available to any pupil who feels they would benefit.

For our senior scholars there have been regular strength and conditioning sessions throughout the term to enable them to prepare for the upcoming competitive phases of their respective programmes. These have been well attended and allowed coaches to provide an individualised and bespoke programme. Our Athletic Development programme has enabled boys and girls to access sessions pre, during and post school. It has been great to see so many First and Second Form pupils attending these, laying the foundations for great movement and engagement in sport.

ENGAGEMENT SPORT

We understand that students join RGS with different sporting experiences, abilities and strengths. Embracing our vision for sports, our promise to Team Reigate is to always offer a diverse

range of sports and activities, making it enjoyable and accessible for everyone.

Engagement at RGS has four main pillars within sport and PE:

Fixtures and Competitions

School Sports Clubs

We have enhanced student engagement in activities across all year groups. Initiatives have been implemented to increase participation and provide diverse sporting opportunities which have been met with enthusiasm from students and staff alike.

Mobile Climbing Wall

A state-of-the-art climbing wall has been introduced as part of Sixth Form games. This will feature prominently in the cocurricular programme offering a challenging new activity that promotes teamwork, problem-solving and fitness.

Touch Rugby Festivals

We have partnered with local schools to create a competitive framework for our touch-rugby teams. This term we are proud to field two teams each in the U12-U14 boys’ age groups, fostering teamwork, increased competitive opportunities and skill development. Touch-rugby will remain a feature in the summer as we continue our involvement

in the Touch to Twickenham programme. These initiatives provide students with opportunities to compete at a high level while promoting teamwork and inclusivity.

Senior House Sports Success

The Senior House Sports competition was moved to the start of term to help new Sixth Form students integrate into their Houses and experience the breadth of our Sports programme from the outset. The initiative proved highly successful, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie early on. It also encouraged some who had previously stepped away from Saturday team sports to re-engage resulting in increased participation and more teams representing the school. This shift highlights the impact of RGS’ community-focused initiatives on student involvement in sports.

Mr Craig Burgess

PE and Games Lessons PE and Games lessons are the foundational blocks and the cornerstone of our engagement approach, they serve as the entry point for all students to connect with sports at RGS. We have embedded a pupil-driven pathway in PE, allowing students from the Third to Fifth Form to choose their intensity level using a chilli heat scale. This innovation has resulted in increased focus, elevated activity levels, and empowered students to have greater control over their PE experience.

While our games programme follows a traditional model offering team sports to all, our commitment to diversity extends the programme to include individual and contemporary sports. As students progress to the Sixth Form, the programme becomes entirely student-driven, enabling them to select their preferred sport or activity. The Spring 2024 Sixth Form games options include both traditional team sports like hockey, netball, football, and rugby 7s, as well as individual sports such as golf, squash, and mountain biking. We actively collaborate with our students to ensure their preferences are met, proudly incorporating activities like yoga, dance, open fitness sessions, and spin bike classes based on valuable feedback gathered from student voice sessions.

After School Clubs and Fixtures/ Competitions

Our after-school clubs and activities programme continue from where our games programme stops, we now offer over 60 weekly sports clubs where students can further develop their passion in sport and physical activities. We acknowledge that many students want to participate in competitive sport and we encourage all our students to represent RGS in their time here. We arrange fixtures and competitions within our house community as well as with local schools to allow our students to showcase their skills.

HOCKEY

The emphasis on Saturday sport for boys now turns its attention to Hockey. There are block fixtures in place for every Saturday of the term in addition to wider engagement fixtures during the week ranging across 18 teams, from A-E across U12 and U13 age-groups, through the Upper School at A-C for U14 and U15 with an U16A, 1st and 2nd XIs for senior students.

As the programme continues to grow and develop, we are looking forward to the challenges of our own fixture circuit against the likes of KCS Wimbledon, RGS Guildford, Eltham College, Alleyns and Caterham. We are also excited to see how our performance teams progress through the numerous National Cup and County Tournaments on offer to the boys.

All students at RGS are lucky to gain from the experience of current international players - Sam Taylor (Great Britain), Alex Pendle (England), Tom Russell (England U23) and Rob Field (Scotland International and Scotland Captain), as well as many experienced coaches on the staff.

Already, we have seen a successful pre-season Senior tour for the girls to Exeter University, and planning is in place for a large overseas long-haul trip tour in the Summer of 2026.

In addition to each year group’s games session, each of the boys’ age-groups has their own dedicated training session after school at Hartswood, which are detailed in the schedule below. With our emphasis on games-based training, we are very excited by what the spring term holds for boys’ hockey at RGS. As the year starts, we have a an opportunity for each team to have some pre-season practice time on the pitch.

Girls Hockey

Whilst the emphasis of Saturday sport now turns to Netball, the teams that are still involved in National Cup runs who will continue to receive high-quality coaching from our staff and use of the fantastic facilities at Hartswood during the spring term.

Envelope Envelope

NETBALL

The spring term marks the exciting beginning of our Netball season. Training sessions take place at lunch time during games afternoons and after school. Sessions focus on developing ball skills, fitness levels, tactical knowledge of the game as well as the implementation of set plays. Training is open to all pupils as well as focus on performance squads during certain sessions. The players also have access to strength and conditioning sessions and lunchtime and after school.

Reflecting on the successful cup runs of the 2023-2024 season, we recognise the significant benefits these competitions bring to our athletes. We are eager to build on last year’s achievements and look forward to another successful season. Additionally, we offer recreational training sessions open to all netballers, regardless of their previous experience, ensuring everyone has the chance to enjoy and improve their skills.

We are thrilled to start this term with a blend of competitive and recreational netball, ensuring all our players have the opportunity to grow, compete, and enjoy the sport.

Mrs Kate Harris Head of Netball Envelope

RUGBY SEVENS

The RGS Rugby Sevens and Touch Rugby programmes continue to thrive offering students exciting opportunities to engage with the sport in its dynamic formats. Last season, all three girls’ teams (U14, U16, and U18) advanced to the knock-out stages of the Rosslyn Park National School Sevens, showcasing their talent and determination. The boys’ U14 team also impressed, topping their group and advancing through the first-stage knock-out pool before meeting strong opposition in Warwick and Sedbergh. These performances highlight the growing strength of the programme and the commitment of our players.

The popularity of Touch Rugby remains a key element of the summer term, with increased numbers of students taking part. The format has allowed many to access the game for the first time, building confidence and developing a love for rugby. Notably, several students have progressed to contact rugby after enjoying their initial experience with touch, demonstrating the success of this inclusive approach. The girls’ rugby programme continues to grow, with more students joining club rugby and some advancing to county-level representation.

Looking ahead, we are excited to build towards another strong showing at the Touch to Twickenham festival in the summer term. The Lent term will also feature the much-anticipated RGS Junior Sevens Tournament and the Girls’ Development Day, providing further opportunities for players to hone their skills and enjoy the game.

Rugby Sevens has long been a cornerstone of the school’s spring term sporting calendar and continues to thrive.

FOOTBALL

Boys

Boys’ Football continues to grow with more and more fixtures each term. Last term we saw a significant increase in participation towards training and I hope to see this continue throughout the spring term. U18 fixtures will continue to take place primarily on Wednesday afternoons and there is an exciting triple-header against RGS Guildford for our 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI, whilst U15, U14, U13 and U12 fixtures will take place after school (strong consideration has been given so as not to clash with hockey or Rugby 7s). The only change to the training evenings as from last term will be that U15/U14s training will not go ahead until after half term due to a clash with Hockey, after half term it will resume on a Friday. Lots of exciting events to come in the spring term such as a and a Senior tour to Cardiff and a football festival at Meadowbank Stadium which a wide range of age groups will be able to get involved in.

Girls

The passion for girls’ football at the school continues to shine through more and more. Having our highest number of girls fixtures ever in the lent term. Training will continue to take place after school on Mondays for First - Third Form and Thursday evenings for Fourth - Sixth Form. Over 70 girls represented the school for football last term across U12, U13, U15 and 1st XI . Fixtures will continue to take place during the training slots for each age group alongside various tournaments that will take place after school on differing days. Lots more exciting opportunities for girls to take part in football such as an exciting match up against Dorking Wanderers Academy for the 1st XI and a football festival at Meadowbank Stadium which a wide range of age groups will be able to get involved in.

Envelope

CRICKET

The cricket programme transitions into the phase of technical preparation, following an increased focus on physical preparation in the autumn term during dedicated strength and conditioning sessions that will hopefully help enormously with learning and development in the future months.

The spring term represents a great opportunity to prepare students for the busy summer cricket season. The summer term is short, leaving less time for practice and coaching to allow competitive opportunities. Therefore, it is paramount that the winter sessions that are available to students are hugely valuable and fun. We are lucky to have exceptional coaches with top regional and ex-professional players, including ex-Middlesex player Ollie Raynor, and Kent player Amy Gordon.

Girls

The girls look forward to an exciting summer ahead with County Cups entered, and the U14s still have their County Final to play at the start of the season. Their indoor season was very successful with impressive performance on a regional level.

Boys

Both the boys’ and girls’ 1st XI travel away at the end of the summer term for their cricket festival which is set to be an excellent end to the season and a great farewell for our leavers. The summer Saturday fixture programme is all in place and live on SOCS. We were also delighted to see the Surrey Schools Cricket Associations decision to have a County Cup at every age group level this summer for the first time ever. In addition to the National Cups at U18 & U15 level, we are looking forward to seeing the impact that this enhanced level of access to training over the winter will have come the summer term.

SWIMMING

RGS students embrace swimming as an integral part of their weekly routines, with a significant number participating in early morning and after school squad training sessions. This unwavering commitment to excellence has played a pivotal role in our swimming programme’s continued ascent.

This term has been a fantastic one for swimming. At the Surrey Relays our teams placed in the top five for eight out of fifteen races, highlighting the competitive strength of our squad, and more than 80 students represented the school this term.

The RGS Swimming Club offers opportunities for everyone, whether aiming for top regional and national honours or simply swimming for fitness. Training sessions cater to a wide range of abilities and goals. Current training times are:

• Early Morning: Tuesday, Thursday | 7:15am-8:00am

• Lunchtime: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday | 1:15pm-2:00pm

• After School: Wednesday, Friday | 4:00pm-5:00pm

Looking ahead we have exciting events including the Bath Cup, Surrey Individuals, Charity Swim, Biathlon, and more. Competitions such as the National Finals at the Olympic Pool in London provide unforgettable experiences for our swimmers while opportunities in biathlon and triathlon add variety.

Our swimming club is inclusive and offers something for everyone “Swimming has helped us stay fit, make friends, and compete at amazing venues. We encourage younger students to join—whether for fun or competition!” Student captains Noah, Emi, and Lauren

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME (SPRING 2025)

CORE SPORTS

Our Co-Curricular programme is extensive. It is not an expectation for students to attend all sessions! Indeed, we emphasise the importance of balance and rest. Students should be doing no more per week than their age in years as hours of participation (11 hours total for an 11-year-old - including all sport, not just school). They should also all have at least one day off completely. If the student is in doubt about what their sport loading should look like they should consult a member of the PE department for advice. Please also note that non-attendance for a good, pre-agreed reason will not affect selection for teams.

CURRICULUM GAMES

GAMES

Games sessions are on weekday afternoons during Periods 6 and 7. The sports played during the winter term are highlighted below. It is important to note that if you wish to play a different sport you can do so during our extensive extracurricular programme. In curriculum games time, we ensure that the students experience a range of sports, with more choice evolving as the students get older and begin to select their preferred sports. CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME (SPRING 2025)

Form

HIGH PERFORMANCE HUB

The High-Performance Hub (HPH) is a programme of talks, seminars, workshops and events that aim to engage students, inspire them and support their learning and performance.

“High Performance is simply being the best you can be.”

The hub will focus on developing an awareness of skills in specific areas that link to High Performance. These will all be designed to support our key aims as a department. For us, sport is the vehicle we use to help develop great PEOPLE.

How does the High-Performance Hub link to the Scholarship programme?

The High-Performance Hub (HPH) is fully inclusive and is open to all. The Hub supports anyone to achieve their potential, including Sport Scholars.

The Sport Scholarship programme is designed to support students who have been identified as having high sporting potential. These students are likely to attend many of the events and activities in the Hub. However, being a scholar includes a more managed process where students will be mentored and supported on an individual basis to meet their sporting targets. It would be an expectation of scholars to attend certain HPH activities and events.

High Performance Hub talks currently take place each Monday at 1.30pm in HC11- full list of topics is listed on the Sports Scholars Team.

What kind of events would the Hub feature?

We hope to use the Hub to develop: personal skills, such as reflection, organisation and time planning; psychological skills, such as grit and resilience, stress management techniques and visualisation; physical and health, such as, athletic development, strength and conditioning and the importance of sleep and recovery, and many more.

Can parents be involved?

Yes! We would like to invite parents to some of our talks and activities. These may be at school or on a digital platform like Microsoft Teams. You will be specifically invited to join your son or daughter for special events and so there is no need to contact school about these prior to the invitation.

How can I help?

If you know anyone who may be interested in speaking to our Reigatian community, please do pass on my details. We would be very pleased to hear from anyone who can offer an insight into any aspects of a High-Performance life. For more information, please contact Mr Browning at gjb@reigategrammar.org.

RGS FIXTURES

Playing sport for the school and wearing the RGS badge is a huge part of the school’s ethos and a privilege which we hope students both honour and respect. We play fixtures during the week and large block fixtures on Saturdays. On rare occasions, there may also be competitions on Sundays. The majority of fixtures will take place in the mornings, but with travel time included, these often take a large part of the day. If selected, students are required to attend the fixture, and it is our aim to make it one of the highlights of their week. We pledge to select all students who wish to play as often as we can and thus have as many teams per year group as staffing and facility availability allow. Should any student be unavailable for a fixture, they must give as much notice as possible, preferably more than a week in advance. This request for absence should be directed to the team coach so that they can keep track of who is available to play. Whilst we understand there can be exceptional circumstances, we recognise four key reasons for requesting an absence from a fixture:

1. Regional or national representation (or equivalent)

2. Illness or injury

3. Serious family matter (for example a wedding or a funeral)

4. Required attendance at another school event or detention.

Match days

Information regarding match days can be found on the sports website . Students are expected to attend match day teas both home and away unless they have informed their coach this is not possible well in advance. Students should also consider the meet time to be the latest time of arrival. As a general rule, students should arrive for home games in playing kit with school tracksuit and hooded sweatshirt over the top. They should also attend match tea in their tracksuit and avoid attending in muddy/wet kit. Often when travelling away, we will travel in school uniform, but again it is important to check the fixture details well in advance. We warmly welcome visitors to school fixtures; in fact, we believe it enhances the experience of the students. Please support the students, helping us to set a great example for them to follow.

Behavioural Expectations

We encourage the highest standards of behaviour from staff, students, and supporters based on our desire to develop great people through sport. We would like all involved in RGS sport to have only positive interactions with match officials, opposition staff, and opposition players, and that our conduct in and around the sports field reflects the values we hold dear as both a school and sports department.

Health and Safety

First aid trained staff are present at fixtures and on games sessions. Additionally, a medical team or physiotherapists will be present at weekend fixtures. We have a reciprocal relationship with most of the schools we play, where the home team provides trained medical cover for all. We use Return 2 Play to support our medical provision focusing on concussion management.

Mouthguards are essential for hockey and contact rugby. Shin pads should also be used for all hockey and football training as well as fixtures.

Sporting Achievements

We would love to hear about and celebrate, any sporting achievements your child has had recently. If you do have a story you wish to share, please let your child’s form tutor know and they will pass the information on to the PE department.

FURTHER INFORMATION

COMMUNICATING WITH PE AND SPORT STAFF

We encourage face-to-face discussions where possible and ask students to find the relevant member of staff in school. If this is not possible, a Microsoft Teams message to the appropriate member of staff is preferred. During term time, you can find all information regarding the fixture programme and team selection on our sports website and we endeavour to get the information up as early as possible to allow for forward planning, recognising that weekends and evenings can get very congested. On some platforms, you may be required to sign in using the password: TeamReigate7.

If parents need to get in touch with a member of staff to discuss a matter, we ask that an email be sent directly to the relevant team coach or the head of that specific sport as far in advance as possible. For unforeseen events such as illness, an email to the head of sport is greatly appreciated.

CONTACTS

If parents need to get in touch with a member of staff to discuss a matter, we ask that an email be sent directly to the relevant team coach or the head of that specific sport as far in advance as possible. You may want to save the address in your favourites and send it to your family and friends. The team password is: TeamReigate7.

To see what’s on, where, and when you have a number of choices:

• You can navigate to our sports calendar via the main menu, then select the day you are interested in and click the ‘details’. This shows the venue and, if we're playing away, will have a link to the location map of our opponent's school. You can also see the team selected for the fixture wherever you see this blue image. Normally we announce team selections at least the day before and in some cases 48 hours before.

• From the sports calendar, you can also click directly through to a team's fixtures and results listing by clicking the team's name, e.g., click on the ‘Girls-U16A’.

• If you are following a particular team or teams you can also select ‘Sports & Teams Fixtures & Results’ from the main menu. Then select a particular sport and your team to see past results and upcoming fixtures.

• From any team's fixture list, you can ‘spy’ on the opponent's recent results by clicking on the spyglass button, or see the playing record, or find their location by clicking on the map point button.

• From any team’s fixtures and results listings, you can download the entire fixture list to your personal calendar on your PC or mobile device. Any changes we make to our fixtures will be synchronised with your personal calendar whenever you connect your PC or mobile device to the Internet.

• If you need to quickly find an away venue for one of our opponents you can either choose the map link directly from a fixture, available via the ‘details’ button as described above, or you can select ‘Opponent Maps & Links’ from the main menu.

• If you are visiting our sports website on your mobile phone you will notice it loads up as a mobile web app. Full instructions for how to get the most out of the web app can be found online via SOCS Help. The mobile web app will allow you to access fixture and team sheet information on the go!

Thank you again for your support of sport and physical activity at RGS and for your encouragement to all students to be fully involved in the development of their own health and fitness. We believe it is a truly unique part of school life where the emphasis is so clearly on developing positive life-long habits.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues for their time and effort in supporting the co-curricular sport opportunities available at RGS. In addition to the plethora of weekly clubs, sport staff have led sports tours to Spain, France, Somerset and Jersey in the last 12 months.

I look forward to seeing you on the touchlines soon.
