As a keen rugby fan I am thrilled by the chance to support the next generation of rugby players. In my role working at John Laing Group I know that the world of business needs team players, and I know that playing rugby is an outstanding way to learn how to play in a team. From children just starting out in the sport through to the accomplished young sportsmen and sportswomen playing in today’s tournament there is a wealth of talent in our young people. We must never forget that, and coming to see the great work going on at our schools is a good way of being reminded. The Changing Lives campaign that this Tournament is supporting is doing impressive work to help children from less advantaged backgrounds realise their potential. I think this is something we can all support. Please enjoy the Tournament and try to spot some of the stars of the next rugby world cup! Olivier Brousse Chief Executive, John Laing Group plc

HEADMASTER
A big welcome to RGS Hartswood today for what appears to be the strongest annual Reigate Charity 7s to date.
The Charity 7’s Event is a highlight of the year for me.
Taking over from Sean Davey in organising this year’s event, I hope the day runs as smoothly as previous years! Today would not be possible without the help of a number of people, not least our dedicated grounds team (led by Nick Hobbs), who have done a great job preparing the pitches for this afternoon. We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors who have committed to supporting this exciting event. Sport and charity have always had a close association with each other and today is no exception, highlighted by the overwhelming support of all our commercial partners. In particular, I would like to thank our principal sponsor John Laing and everyone at Vine of Redhill BMW, Sports Arabia, Kukri Sports UK, Harrisons Catering for their advocacy along with Hiscox for their sponsorship of the RGS 1st VII playing shirts. Indeed, all our commercial partners deserve our special thanks in making this day one to remember. We are delighted to welcome England and Wasps star Joe Simpson, who has taken time out from his busy playing schedule to join us along with International Rugby World Cup and Aviva Premiership referee Wayne Barnes as our special guests for the day. Finally, the day would not run smoothly if it wasn’t for the team of staff and volunteers who selflessly give up their own valuable time to ensure that today is a huge success. Thank you all for your help. An exciting day ahead and one that makes me want to get the boots back on! Jonny Hylton Tournament Director
It brings together old friends and new to enjoy good sport, to have a good time and to raise money for a good cause. RGS Hartswood copes with bad weather, of course, but we will all be pleased if we can have some kind weather on the day of the tournament! I am grateful to everyone who supports this important event and in particular to the sponsors who have worked in close collaboration with the RGS Foundation. I would also like to say a special thank you to our grounds team who have worked hard, despite the weather, to make Hartswood look so good today. The Reigate Charity 7s brings together so many of the best features of today’s young people and we celebrate their talent, team work and personal dedication. Whilst winning is important, I welcome the traditional sporting values attributed to this great game and these cultural ingredients that makes it so special. Today’s event is the first of the annual tournaments where RGS’ new Director of Rugby, Richard Birkett, will be present, alongside Head of Rugby Doug Cooper and other staff. Richard’s arrival, bringing with him considerable expertise and experience of elite Rugby playing for Wasps and winning the Heineken Cup and more, has been another big step forward in the RGS professional coaching programmes. In January, the Independent Schools Inspectorate report was published judging the school to be ‘Exceptional’ – a rare accolade. I was pleased that amongst the praise for academic outcomes, teaching, pastoral care, governance and more the inspectors made specific reference to the strength of extracurricular activity and sport in particular. As all of the schools represented here today know, so much is learned on the sports field that can help prepare a young person for later life. I wish every team the best of luck and much enjoyment for today’s tournament. Shaun Fenton Headmaster

JOE SIMPSON SPECIAL GUEST LONDON WASPS AND ENGLAND
WAYNE BARNES AVIVA PREMIERSHIP AND INTERNATIONAL REFEREE
Born in Sydney, Joe Simpson started playing rugby at St Benedict’s School, Ealing and then became a member of the Wasps Academy. He joined the Academy in the summer of 2006 and developed rapidly, making his senior debut in October 2008. After some eye-catching appearances off the bench and some top tries, he became first choice scrum half by the end of 2008/09 and was promoted to the First XV squad ahead of the 2009/10 season.
English referee Wayne Barnes became a professional referee in 2005. At the time, he was the youngest referee to ever be selected for the Panel of National Referees in 2001 aged just 21. He turned fully professional in April 2005 and made his Test debut in 2006 as he oversaw three matches in the Pacific Five Nations tournament.
He was named the Wasps Supporters’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season for the following season, having made such a huge impression throughout a tough year for the Club. In the 2014/15 season, Simpson played his 150th game for the club in a clash with Bath at the Rec. For his outstanding performances Simpson was named in the BT Sport Team of the year and also scooped the award for the Aviva Premiership try of the season for his effort against Exeter at the Ricoh. Having played for England at Saxons level, he won his first full cap at the 2011 World Cup as a replacement, becoming only the second player to win his first cap for England in a Rugby World Cup tournament. Joe has represented England at U19, Sevens and U20 level and in 2008 he was nominated for the IRB Young Player of the Year award.
Wayne is held in the highest regard amongst players and peers alike and recently was the man in the middle for the 2015 Rugby World Cup Semi Final between Argentina and Australia. He also was in charge for last weekend’s fixture between Wales and France at the Millennium Stadium in the 6 Nations and on Friday night just passed for the Aviva Premiership match between Newcastle Falcons and Worcester Warriors, so go easy on him today!

CHARITY INFORMATION The RGS Foundation’s Changing Lives campaign Reigate Grammar School was founded through the generosity and philanthropic support of Henry Smith in 1675. Throughout its long history the School has faced many challenges, particularly financial, yet shown formidable strength of character and resilience throughout. The 1675 Bursary Fund aims to transform lives by giving an opportunity to those whose potential is far greater than their financial means. Inspired by the philosophy of our founders, we recognise that such generosity enriches our School, enhances academic standards, social mobility, and widens educational opportunity.

Breast Cancer Now Charity Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and 50,000 women are diagnosed with it every year. That’s 137 wives, mothers, daughters and friends every single day. Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer research charity. Together with its supporters, the ambition is to see the last breast cancer death by 2050, and they will do whatever it takes to get there. Wayne and his wife Polly have been supporting the charity since Polly’s mum died of the disease. They set up the Debbie Broderick Pink Ribbon Tribute Fund as part of the charity in 2013 and are active and passionate fundraisers and to date have raised an incredible £49,000. Any money you kindly donate goes to supporting the charity’s important work in four areas - risk and prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and secondary breast cancer – and will be received with heartfelt thanks.

REIGATE CHARITY 7s 2015 WELLINGTON COLLEGE 31-5 BRIGHTON COLLEGE The weather gods were kind last March at Reigate Grammar School’s Hartswood Sports ground for the annual Reigate Charity 7s. Now regarded as one of the most wellestablished and renowned school tournaments in the country, the competition welcomed 40 of the top boys and girls U18 schools’ sevens teams. In the cup, Wellington College faced Brighton College in the main final with the school from West Berkshire proving too strong for their south coast counterparts. Wellington ran out as eventual 31-5 winners in a dominant display of sevens rugby. It was complete performance from the strong Wellington side refereed by the England and Harlequins scrum half special guest Karl Dickson. Karl is on track to become the first professional rugby player to be a professional referee in England. Meanwhile, in the Plate Competition, Whitgift edged a close affair beating Dulwich College 12-0. In the Girls’ competition there was a carbon copy of the 2014 final with Worthing College and Filton College meeting once again. In an extremely close match, Worthing held on to take their second trophy home in successive years recording a 10-7 victory. In the Girls’ Plate competition, Pangbourne College triumphed with a score of 17-5 over Epsom College. Presentations were made by Shaun Fenton, RGS Headmaster on the balcony of the sports pavilion.
