As a keen rugby fan I am thrilled by the chance to support the next generation of rugby players. In my role working at John Laing Group I know that the world of business needs team players, and I know that playing rugby is an outstanding way to learn how to play in a team. From children just starting out in the sport through to the accomplished young sportsmen and sportswomen playing in today’s tournament there is a wealth of talent in our young people. We must never forget that, and coming to see the great work going on at our schools is a good way of being reminded. The Changing Lives campaign that this Tournament is supporting is doing impressive work to help children from less advantaged backgrounds realise their potential. I think this is something we can all support. Please enjoy the Tournament and try to spot some of the stars of the next rugby world cup! Olivier Brousse Chief Executive, John Laing Group plc

JONNY HYLTON

HEADMASTER

Welcome to RGS Hartswood for the annual Reigate Charity 7s. Over recent years, the calibre and standard of 7s on show has been a pleasure to watch, propelling the RC7s to one of the most popular tournaments in the country.

The Reigate Charity 7s is always a highlight in the school calendar: it provides the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, forge new relationships, witness some high quality school 7s and raise money for a superb cause, the RGS Changing Lives campaign.

Today would just not be possible without the help of a number of hard-working and dedicated individuals. In particular, our grounds team (led by Nick Hobbs) who have worked tirelessly in preparing the pitches and the rest of Hartswood for today. We are very fortunate to have forged long term relationships with our sponsors and are delighted to welcome John Laing once again as our principal sponsor. Our thanks also go to everyone at Sporta Group, Kukri Sports UK, Mercedes-Benz of Guildford and Harrisons Catering for their continued advocacy, indeed, our thanks go to all of our commercial partners that have supported the Reigate Charity 7s this year. We also welcome Harlequins star Ross Chisholm today as our special guest. Ross has played over 75 times for Quins and was nominated for ‘Try of the Year’ by the RPA in 2012, scoring a sparkling length of the field try. An ex Brighton College pupil, Ross will be watching his alma mater with keen eyes. I was lucky to play with Ross when he was on loan at Esher (when we both had more hair!) and even back then you could see he was a class above the rest of us! We are delighted to welcome him today. Finally, thank you to all the staff and volunteers who selflessly give up their own valuable time to make today the success that it is, it would not be possible without you all. Jonny Hylton Tournament Director

I am delighted, once more, to welcome John Laing as our Principal sponsor this year for the Charity 7s. The phenomenal support provided by John Laing is one of the key factors in making this day such a huge success. I would like to thank all of the sponsors and volunteers who have committed to supporting us today. RGS Hartswood is looking splendid and I am sure will deal with the 100+ matches that will be played today. My thanks go to the grounds team which has worked so hard in preparing the site. The RGS Rugby programme continues to take great strides forward this season. A large, excited group of First Formers joined the school in September with a very healthy appetite for rugby and this has resulted in the school being able to field A-E sides for the first time in its history. Rugby provides a platform to harness the essential values of sportsmanship, respect and teamwork that are so important to help prepare a young person later life, making days like today so important. Later this year will see the unveiling of the fabulous state of the art Learning Centre at the heart of RGS that will help us to continue to provide first-class education for the children in our care and are we are indebted to Sir Peter Harrison, the Harrison Foundation and the Harrison family trustees who continue to be so supportive of RGS. I wish every team the best of luck and much enjoyment for today’s tournament. Shaun Fenton Headmaster

ROSS CHISHOLM SPECIAL GUEST HARLEQUINS RFC Ross was born in Cuckfield, West Sussex and since 2009 has played over 75 times for Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership. He is a Fullback, also playing on the Wing. Ross started playing rugby at Haywards Heath RFC, went to school at Brighton College and his early rugby talent was evident earning him a place in Harlequins Elite Player Development Group with subsequent promotion to the senior Academy. He was selected to play in two senior pre-season matches in 2009 before making his first team debut later that year against Newcastle Falcons in the LV Cup. He continued developing and in January 2011 signed his first senior contract. The 2011/12 season saw Chisholm make his first Premiership start in the opener against London Irish, playing on the wing. The constant presence of England Full Back, Mike Brown, and stiff competition on the wings limited Chisholm’s first team game time, but he did make 11 senior appearances in the season, scoring 5 tries. Ross has been unlucky with injuries this season, but is getting back into the swing of things after a long spell on the side lines. Ross is joined in the Quins squad by his younger brother and Number 8, James.

RICHARD HAUGHTON SPECIAL GUEST HSBC SEVENS WORLD SERIES REFEREE & FORMER SARACENS, WASPS, ENGLAND 7s & PERPIGNAN PLAYER After 12 years of playing professional rugby and having amassed hundreds of caps with England Sevens, Richard took the decision when he retired at the end of the French Top 14 season in 2014 to forge out a career as a match official. His rise has been dramatic, culminating in promotion to the refereeing panel of HSBC World Sevens this year. We are very fortunate to have Richard refereeing the Boys main final today, labelled as ‘The World’s Fastest Referee’ Richard is also an old boy of one of the teams playing, St Johns Leatherhead, but has assured me that his loyalties lie with the whistle and not his alma mater!

CHARITY INFORMATION The RGS Foundation’s Changing Lives campaign Reigate Grammar School was founded through the generosity and philanthropic support of Henry Smith in 1675. Throughout its long history the School has faced many challenges, particularly financial, yet shown formidable strength of character and resilience throughout. The 1675 Bursary Fund aims to transform lives by giving an opportunity to those whose potential is far greater than their financial means. Inspired by the philosophy of our founders, we recognise that such generosity enriches our School, enhances academic standards, social mobility, and widens educational opportunity.

The Sebastian Adeniran–Olule Charitable Fund The Sebastian Adeniran–Olule Charitable Fund has been set up in memory of Seb, who tragically passed away on May 9th 2016 at the age of 20. Seb was a hugely talented rugby player. Beginning his rugby at Whitgift School at the age of ten, this is where Seb was spotted by Harlequins and joined the Club’s Academy at the age of 12. While playing for Sutton & Epsom RFC at junior levels, Seb received county honours. His rugby continued to go from strength to strength, alongside a move to Wellington College, and he represented England at U16, U18 and U20 age groups. On loan to Richmond FC, he was a regular starting member of the squad that saw the Club promoted from National League 1 into the Championship, and he played three first team games for Harlequins.

The Sebastian Adeniran–Olule Charitable Fund will help provide first-class sporting and academic opportunities for boys who wouldn’t otherwise be fortunate enough to access them. The Fund is supported by Whitgift School, Wellington College, Harlequins Rugby Club, Richmond FC and the RFU.

REIGATE CHARITY 7s 2016 Last March saw over 40 schools descend upon RGS Hartswood for the 2016 Reigate Charity 7s, sponsored by John Laing. Now established as one of the most popular tournaments in the country, schools from the length and breadth of the country arrived bright and early for the exciting day of rugby ahead. Harrow faced Reigate Grammar School in the Boys’ Cup Final and in a powerful display it was Harrow that ran out eventual winners with a 34-14 victory against a young and talented RGS side. This was a thrilling match, refereed by Wayne Barnes who took time out of his busy international and domestic schedule to officiate the proceedings. Whitgift romped home to victory in the Boys’ Plate Final beating Portsmouth Grammar School 40-19. In the Girls’ Cup competition SGS Filton produced a fantastic display of attacking rugby to overcome Christ’s Hospital in a comprehensive 49-5 win. Tournament newcomers Blessed Hugh Faringdon RC School took home the Plate after beating Oundle 29-0. Presentations were made by Wayne Barnes on the pavilion balcony to all the competition winners. Now an established charity event, significant sums were raised for Breast Cancer Now and the RGS Foundation’s Changing Lives Campaign.
