Sport continues to evolve at RGS with increasing emphasis on our vision to develop Great People through Sport. We’ve looked to increase both student and parent voice over the last few months and now have an active Student Sports Committee who are creating a strategy to support a drive towards increasing the number of senior students playing core sports. The Sport Parent Feedback Group met recently and discussed sport at RGS generally before focusing on both the balance of participation and performance sport, and how best we can develop communication with our community. My sincere thanks go to all those who are involved.
•
And so much more...
Some highlights from the Winter term include: •
Hockey Tours to Taunton and the Netherlands
•
A Rugby tour to the Rugby World Cup in France
•
A Sport Science Trip to Surrey University
•
The Junior Girls finishing 5th Nationally in the Cross-Country Championships in Suffolk

Sport continues to evolve at RGS with increasing emphasis on our vision to develop Great People Through Sport. Being part of Team Reigate is about being part of something bigger than yourself and we hope that all students will have the chance to shine. We want all students to experience sport in line with our six missions to create great people, shown here. Much of what we do revolves around creating meaningful and memorable experiences for the students of which there should be many each term. We want to create an environment where all students have a positive experience during fixtures. This means both RGS and opposition teams. Being part of Team Reigate is about being part of something bigger than yourself and we hope that all pupils will have the chance to shine in this environment. Watch our Vision for Sport short film.

HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORT
ENGAGEMENT SPORT
Supporting our pupils to aspire for the best they can be, irrespective of their starting point and with a longterm view of success is fundamental to our vision for sport. As part of this experience, and to supplement the excellent coaching during games and after school sessions, the High-Performance Hub (HPH) provides access to experiences and performance habits that are designed to support and challenge in equal measure. The High-Performance Hub has continued to be a thread that many of our pupils use to support their sporting development. This term the ‘HPH’ has looked like lunchtime sessions every Monday, exploring sleep habits, psychological skills and pupil workload awareness, as well as a nutrition seminar where pupils were able to apply some theory into making their own healthy, energy packed snacks! These varied experiences have prompted conversations and interventions across pupils and staff and we look forward to further opportunities through the spring and summer terms. This focus on holistic development and ‘Great People Through Sport’ has underpinned the approach throughout.
For our senior male and female cricketer scholars and our high-performance indoor hockey squads, there have been weekly (or more often!) sessions throughout the off season to enable them to prepare for the upcoming competitive phases of their respective programmes. These have been well attended and allowed our coaches to provide an individualised and bespoke programme of development. In a similar vein, our Athletic Development programme has enabled boys and girls to access sessions pre, during and post school. It has been great to see so many First and Second Form students in particular attending these, laying the foundations for great movement and engagement in sport as they move through the school.
We understand that students join RGS with different sporting experiences, abilities and strengths. Embracing our vision for sports, our promise to Team Reigate is to always offer a diverse range of sports and activities, making it enjoyable and accessible for everyone. Engagement at RGS has four main pillars within sport and PE:
Fixtures and Competitions
Mr Jack Emmerson Assistant Director of Sport, Performance
PE Lessons
After School Sports Clubs
Games Lessons
PE and Games Lessons PE and Games lessons are the foundational blocks and the cornerstone of our engagement approach, they serve as the entry point for all students to connect with sports at RGS. We’ve embedded a pupil-driven pathway in PE, allowing students from the Third to Fifth Form to choose their intensity level using a chilli heat scale. This innovation has resulted in increased focus, elevated activity levels, and empowered students to have greater control over their PE experience. While our games program follows a traditional model offering team sports to all, our commitment to diversity extends the program to include individual and contemporary sports. As students’ progress to the Sixth Form, the program becomes entirely student-driven, enabling them to select their preferred sport or activity. The Spring 2024 Sixth Form games options include both ‘traditional’ team sports like hockey, netball, football, and Rugby 7s, as well as individual sports such as golf, squash, and mountain biking. We actively collaborate with our students to ensure their preferences are met, proudly incorporating activities like yoga, dance, open fitness sessions, and spin bike classes based on valuable feedback gathered from student voice sessions. After School Clubs and Fixtures/ Competitions Our after-school clubs and activities programme continue from where our games programme stops, we now offer over 60 weekly sports clubs where pupils can further develop their passion in sport and physical activities. We acknowledge that many pupils want to participate in competitive sport and we encourage all our pupils to represent RGS in their time here. We arrange fixtures and competitions within our house community as well as with local schools to allow our pupils to showcase their skills. Mr Craig Burgess Assistant Director of Sport, Engagement

Boys The emphasis on Saturday sport for boys now turns its attention to Hockey. There are block fixtures in place for every Saturday of the term, in addition to wider engagement fixtures during the week ranging across 18 teams, from A-E across U12 & U13 age-groups, through the Upper School at A-C for U14 & U15 with an U16A, 1st & 2nd XIs for senior students. As the programme continues to grow and develop, we are looking forward to the challenges of our own fixture circuit against the likes of KCS Wimbledon, RGS Guildford, Eltham College, Alleyns & Caterham. We are also excited to see how our performance teams progress through the numerous National Cup & County Tournaments on offer to the boys. All students at Reigate Grammar are lucky to gain from the experience of current international players - Sam Taylor (Great Britain Squad), Tom Russell (England U23) & Rob Field (Scotland International), as well as many experienced coaches on the staff. In addition to each year groups games session, each of the boys age-groups has their own dedicated training session after school at Hartswood, which are detailed in the schedule below. With our emphasis on games-based training, we are very excited by what the Spring Term holds for boys hockey at RGS.
5
Girls Whilst the emphasis of Saturday sport now turns to netball, there are still a number of teams that are involved in National Cup runs who will continue to receive high quality coaching from our staff and use of the fantastic facilities at Hartswood during the Spring Term. Touring 2023 has been the first year since covid that the school has run its full hockey touring programme. Already, we have seen a successful preseason Senior tour for the girls to Holland and a first experience for junior girls with a mid-season long weekend in Taunton. The boys can also look forward to the touring programme opening up for them this term, with a replica mid-season tour to Taunton for the junior boys, and the senior boys have an exciting mid-season tour to Barcelona planned in February. Mrs Rebecca Wickham Head of Hockey
The rugby programme transitions into Sevens this term. For the U15 boys there are still National Cup fixtures in the XV-aside format to play, while other year groups will focus both on general skill and physical development, as well as on Sevens competition. As ever, the highlights of the sevens season are both the RGS Junior (U12 and U14) Rugby Sevens tournament on the 17th March, and the National Sevens tournament at Rosslyn Park. The National tournament is the biggest in the world with more than 1000 teams participating throughout the various year groups. The RGS Sevens tournament is a key preparation tournament for the School in the South of England and we regularly host the top rugby schools in this area of the country. For those pupils that enjoy two or more sports, we encourage pupils to balance rugby with those sports. The majority
of the Sevens training is after-school in sessions organised not to clash with other activities, where possible. Sevens tournaments are normally on weekdays or Sundays this term to avoid clashes with our extensive Saturday sport programme. We strive to offer all the pupils the opportunity to play for the school this term. We are proud to enter boys’ and girls’ teams in the Rosslyn Park tournaments and these are often seen as the season ending finale of the Sevens season. It is highly competitive to reach this stage and selection is limited to a maximum of twelve pupils per squad. We also host an RGS Girls Rugby Festival at Hartswood on Friday 6 February for U14, U16 & U18 teams. Mr Doug Cooper Head of Rugby
Mr Rob Field Head of Hockey Development

SWIMMING
NETBALL
RGS students have embraced swimming as an integral part of their weekly routines, with a significant number participating in early morning and after school squad training sessions. This unwavering commitment to excellence has played a pivotal role in our swimming program’s continued ascent.
In addition to our curriculum-based swimming, we continue to offer a robust schedule of six extracurricular sessions each week. These sessions not only serve as a platform for refining swimming techniques but also provide opportunities for students to foster their love for the water and maintain their fitness.
Throughout the autumn term, our U12-U18 boys’ and girls’ teams have consistently demonstrated their prowess, competing in a multitude of events, including regular galas and county-level competitions. Throughout the term, the culture of swimming at RGS has flourished, propelled by the relentless dedication of our students and coaches.
In conclusion, swimming at RGS stands as a testament to our legacy of ongoing triumph and expansion. Our indoor pool, a symbol of our dedication to the sport, continues to be a hub of excellence and achievement. The dedication of our students and coaches has propelled us to new heights, and our story of success continues to be written with every stroke. As we look forward, we anticipate even greater accomplishments and an everexpanding horizon of opportunities in the world of swimming.
Our swimming endeavours have translated into remarkable achievements. We consistently secure top-tier finishes in the highly competitive Surrey Schools Relay Championships. Our U18 Girls team has been successful in qualifying for the National Relay event in Birmingham. Our commitment to swimming extends beyond the competition. Students from the First to Fifth Form continue to enjoy the opportunity to embrace the water as part of their curriculum physical education (PE) lessons. For those in the Fourth to Sixth Form, swimming remains a valued games option, allowing them to refine their skills and passion for the sport.
Miss Jasmine Strudwick Head of Swimming
The commencement of the Spring Term marks the official start of our netball season, featuring Saturday block fixtures against local schools. Our inclusive netball program, rooted in the core values of inclusivity, excellence, growth, and performance focus, accommodates teams from A to E (and, in some instances, ‘F’). Weekly after-school training sessions, along with dedicated performance sessions for teams engaged in National competitions, form the cornerstone of our approach. Building on the triumphs of a highly successful Autumn Term, we currently boast the participation of four year groups in National competitions: •
U13: Progressing to the Last 16 of the Sisters n Sport National Cup competition, they are set to compete for a spot in the quarter-finals in the new year, facing Royal Russell.
•
U14: Achieving victory against RAA, they have secured a spot in the Last 16 of the Sisters n Sport National Plate, eagerly anticipating news of their upcoming opponents.
•
U15: Advancing to the Quarter Finals of the Independent Schools National Competition (ISNC) Plate, they eagerly await the announcement of their next opponents in the New Year.
•
U18: Following an exceptional triumph over Seaford College, the U18s have earned their place in the Sisters n Sport National Plate Quarter Finals, awaiting details about their next opponents.
In addition to these achievements, we are thrilled to share some exciting upcoming events. National Super League Match - A group of 102 girls and 8 staff members will embark on a journey to witness the clash between London Pulse and Leeds Rhinos at Crystal Palace, offering a unique opportunity to witness top-tier netball in action. Seniors vs Alumni - we are delighted to announce the Seniors vs Alumni netball match scheduled for Friday, March 22nd. Former first team players from the past three years will return to RGS to face off against the current Senior netball teams. This promises to be a spectacular event, providing a wonderful chance to reconnect with our Alumni and hear about their latest endeavours. Stay tuned for more details on this event. Mrs Keren Bell

FOOTBALL
CRICKET
Boys Boys’ football at Reigate Grammar School is becoming more established and we continue to look at how we can add more fixtures to the already busy sports schedule. Last term, we witnessed a substantial increase in training participation, and we aim to maintain this momentum throughout the Spring term making use of our relationship with South Park FC as well as growing relationships with local football clubs. During the Autumn Term the 1st XI Boys have had success in the ISFA U18 Bowl defeating Kew House, Eastbourne College and Lord Wandsworth College along the way. A quarter final awaits away at Bedford School in the New Year.
We continue to review and reflect upon our practice of what our winter cricket programme delivery has looked like over recent years, and outline below the structure moving forward this winter. This initially forms the following phases:
Girls Girls’ football at Reigate Grammar School has experienced a remarkable surge in participation, leading to our commitment to various exciting tournaments and cup fixtures this term. Our U18s have advanced to the 2nd Round of the ISFA Smith Construction Cup (facing Bedes), while our U13s are determined to uphold their success on the local circuit following their run of victories last year. Florence S in 2nd Form has gained selection into the Puma’s an independent school representative team. We wish her well and hope she makes selection to play at the Gothia cup. New appointments We are also pleased to announce that this term we have employed Mr Joel Ogilvie new appointment as our Lead Football Coach. A recent student and player for Crawley Town Community Foundation, he has been joined us to build on his professional coaching experience offering his coaching and playing knowledge to our pupils. Miss Sophie Pout, who was introduced earlier, will also be a key new member to the football staff helping to lead the girls programme to new heights. Mr Craig Burgess Head of Football

The Spring Term represents a great opportunity to prepare students for the busy summer cricket season. The Summer Term is short, leaving less time for practice and coaching. Therefore, it is paramount that the winter sessions that are available to students are hugely valuable and fun. The junior and inter girls are looking forward to their respective District rounds in the Lady Taverner’s Indoor Competition next term. They are hopeful of reaching the County Finals later in the term, and going one better that last year by going past the Regional stage that will take place at the start of the Summer Term. Whilst a different concept to playing cricket on grass in the summer, the skills that can be developed in this environment are particularly transferable and an important part of any winter cricket programme. The summer Saturday fixture programme is all in place and live on SOCS. We have again entered every age-group into the Surrey Schools Cricket Association’s, County Cups. In addition to the National Cups at U18 & U15 level, we are looking forward to seeing the impact that this enhanced level of access to training over the winter will have come the Summer Term. Boys Each boys’ year group has their own dedicated session led by our Level 2 & 3 coaches, led by James Leck with Jack Bellars (Captain at South Nutfield CC) & Sam Taylor. Having reached the latter stages of a number of County Cups last year, we are looking forward to seeing how our boys take on the challenges they are presented with this summer. All fixtures, both midweek and Saturday blocks have been scheduled and updated on the SOCS website. Mr James Leck Assistant Director of Sport, Operations & Head of Cricket
With all of this, we fully understand and appreciate that you already have very busy schedules and agree that balance is of the utmost importance with everything that you are doing. Ensuring an appropriate load of activity is of the upmost importance, and we are fully aware that your priorities may be placed in other areas of sport throughout this time. We are also aware that the sessions on offer may clash. Please just stay in touch and communicate accordingly, face-to-face via the student would be preferable please. It is important to us to develop a programme which provides opportunity to as many students as possible, we will continue to reflect on our provision with the aim of developing the best sporting programme for our pupils. However, we do face capacity challenges, which will impact upon sessions at various points & times. Whatever your level of involvement this coming year, we hope that you continue to enjoy and get the most out of your sporting programme here at RGS. Girls As outlined above, we are delighted to welcome Sophie Pout to the staff, who will take a leading role for girls cricket alongside Vicki Howard & Amy Gordon.

CORE SPORTS
SWIMMING / STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
Our Co-Curricular programme is extensive. It is not an expectation for pupils to attend all sessions! Indeed, we emphasise the importance of balance and rest. Pupils should be doing no more per week than their age in years as hours of participation (11 hours total for an 11-year-old - including all sport, not just school). They should also all have at least one day off completely. If the pupil is in doubt of what their sport loading should look like they should consult a member of the PE department for advice. Please also note that non-attendance for a good, pre-agreed reason will not affect selection for teams.
For a full list of Sports fixtures and results and all Co-Curricular Clubs please consult SOCS. You can read more about Specialist Clubs, Clubs and Activities and Sport in our online publications.

A GUIDE TO SPORT SPRING TERM 2024
PERFORMANCE SPORT
SCHOOL REPRESENTATION AND SATURDAY SPORT
HIGH PERFORMANCE HUB
RGS FIXTURES
The High-Performance Hub (HPH) is a programme of talks, seminars, workshops and events that aim to engage pupils, inspire them and support their learning and performance.
Playing sport for the school and wearing the RGS badge is a huge part of the school’s ethos and a privilege which we hope students both honour and respect. We play fixtures during the week and large block fixtures on Saturdays. On rare occasions there may also be competitions on Sundays. The majority of fixtures will take place in mornings but with travel time included these often take a large part of the day. If selected students are required to attend the fixture and it is our aim to make it one of the highlights of their week. We pledge to select all students who wish to play as often as we can and thus have as many teams per year group as staffing and facility availability allow.
“High Performance is simply being the best you can be.” The hub will focus on developing an awareness of skills in specific areas that link to High Performance. These will all be designed to support our key aims as a department. For us, sport is the vehicle we use to help develop great PEOPLE. How does the High-Performance Hub link to the Scholarship programme? The High-Performance Hub (HPH) is fully inclusive and is open to all. The Hub supports anyone to achieve their potential, including Sport Scholars. The Sport Scholarship programme is designed to support pupils who have been identified as having high sporting potential. These pupils are likely to attend many of the events and activities in the Hub. However, being a scholar includes a more managed process where pupils will be mentored and supported on an individual basis to meet their sporting targets. It would be an expectation of scholars to attend certain HPH activities and events. High Performance Hub talks currently take place each Monday at 1.30pm in HC11full list of topics is listed on the Sports Scholars ‘Team’
What kind of events would the Hub feature? We hope to use the Hub to develop: Personal skills, such as reflection, organisation and time planning; Psychological Skills, such as grit and resilience, stress management techniques and visualisation; Physical and Health, such as, athletic development, strength and conditioning and the importance of sleep and recovery, and many more. Can parents be involved? Yes! We would like to invite parents to some of our talks and activities. These may be at school or on a digital platform like Microsoft Teams. You will be specifically invited to join your son or daughter for special events and so there is no need to contact school about these prior to the invitation. How can I help? If you know anyone who may be interested in speaking to our Reigatian community, please do pass on my details. We would be very pleased to hear from anyone who can offer an insight into any aspects of a High-Performance life. For more information, please contact Mr Browning at gjb@Reigategrammar.org.
Should any student be unavailable for a fixture they must give as much notice as possible, and preferably more than a weeks advanced warning. This request for absence should be directed to the team coach so that he or she can keep a track of who is available to play. Whilst we understand there can be exceptional circumstances, we recognise four key reasons for requesting an absence from a fixture: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Regional or National Representation (or equivalent) Illness or injury Serious family matter (for example a wedding or a funeral) Required attendance at another school event or detention.
MATCH DAY TRANSPORT Details regarding match day travel will be published alongside the selected teams on the school’s sport website. For away fixtures students should meet their coach at school at the published meet time and they will be returned to school following the fixture. Should parents wish to take their child direct to the fixture or take their student home directly from the venue they must let the team coach know more than 24 hours prior to the fixture.
TEAM SELECTION We would very much like everyone to represent Reigate Grammar School or their House at sport during the next year. There are more than a thousand fixtures across all sports in a normal year at RGS. If your son or daughter is not selected in the first round of fixtures, don’t worry. We hope to involve all those who are keen to play.
SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS We encourage the highest standards of behaviour from staff, students and We would love to hear about, and celebrate, any sporting achievements your child has had recently. If you do have a story you wish to share, please let your child’s form tutor know and they will pass the information on to the PE department.
MATCH DAY
13
All information regarding match days can be found on the sports website. Students are expected to attend match day teas both home and away unless they have informed their coach this is not possible well in advance. Students should also consider the meet time to be the latest time of arrival. As a general rule, students should arrive for home games in playing kit with school tracksuit
and hooded sweatshirt over the top. They should also attend match tea in their tracksuit and avoid attending in muddy/wet kit. Often when travelling away we will travel in school uniform, but again it is important to check the fixture details well in advance. We warmly welcome visitors to school fixtures; in fact, we believe it enhances the experience of the pupils. Please support the pupils, helping us to set a great example for them to follow.
BEHAVIOURAL EXPECTATIONS We encourage the highest standards of behaviour from staff, students and supporters, based upon our desire to develop great people through sport. We would like all involved in RGS sport to have only positive interactions with match officials, opposition staff and opposition players and that our conduct in and around the sports field reflect the values we hold dear as both a school and sports department.
HEALTH & SAFETY First Aid trained staff are present at fixtures and on games sessions. Additionally, A medical team or physiotherapists will be present at weekend fixtures. We have a reciprocal relationship with the majority of the schools we play, where the home team provides trained medical cover for all pupils. We use ‘Return 2 Play’ to support our medical provision focusing on concussion management: www.return2play.org.uk/. Mouthguards are essential for hockey and contact rugby. Shin pads should also be used for all hockey and football training as well as fixtures.

CONTACTS
We encourage face-to-face discussion where possible and ask pupils to find the relevant member of staff in school. If this is not possible a Microsoft Teams message to the appropriate member of staff is preferred. During term time you can find all information regarding the fixture programme and team selection on our sports website (www.reigategrammarsport.org) and we endeavour to get the information up as early as possible to allow for forward planning as we recognise that weekends and evenings can get very congested. On some platforms, you may be required to sign-in using the password: TeamReigate7.
If parents need to get in touch with a member of staff to discuss a matter, we ask that an email be sent directly to the relevant team coach or the head of that specific sport as far in advance as possible. For unforeseen events, such as illness, an email to the head of sport is greatly appreciated.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Thank you again for your support of sport and physical activity at RGS and for your encouragement to all students to be fully involved in the development of their own health and fitness. We believe it is a truly unique part of school life where the emphasis is so clearly on developing positive life-long habits. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues for their time and effort in supporting the CoCurricular opportunities available at RGS. In addition to 80 weekly clubs, sport staff have already led sports tours to the Netherlands, France and Taunton this term. I look forward to seeing you on the touchlines soon. George Browning Director of Sport
