The RGS Today Monday 4 May 2020 Issue 444
General Reminders Charity Event: Thank you to every single one of you who walked, strolled, jogged, ran, sprinted or cycled for charity yesterday. We have been simply overwhelmed by the extraordinary engagement from the whole RGS community; the photos on social media of students, staff, families, OGs, members of the community and dogs (!) entering into the spirit of #WearItWithPride give you a flavour of what was a fantastic, uplifting event. At the time of writing the event has – so far – raised over £3,100 for Shooting Star Chase, our school-nominated local charity. Shooting Star Chase is a leading children's hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions and does phenomenal work in Surrey and beyond. You have made a real difference; this is what #RGSTogether is truly about. You can still contribute; if you feel able to donate, please do so via this link: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rgsg RGS Remote Chess Club: RGS Remote Chess Club continues to take place each week. It is done through Chess.com and is a weekly arena blitz tournament taking place from 1.10pm to 1.40pm every Friday lunchtime. Please note that this Friday is a Bank Holiday and the tournament will take place on Thursday instead. If you are interested, there are two things to do: join the Chess Club Teams site by using the following code: sw3ipsm under the ‘Join a Team’ option; ask your parents to complete the online form so that we can add their son to the closed group on Chess.com. Congratulations to Ronit Sachdeva (1R) and Omeet Atara (L6) for their victories so far (AWJJ / TF). Working at Home: We are all having to adapt to remote working, using screens much more than normal and realise that we don’t all have the ‘set up’ we might like to have at home, but please do what you can to make your working arrangements as comfortable for yourselves as possible. To minimise any shortterm discomfort, like eye strain, shoulder or neck stiffness or headaches, we would recommend adopting some basic measures, e.g. Use a stable, conformable chair that provides good back support. Adopt good seating posture by keeping straight angles between your torso and thighs and arms and forearms. Keep your feet firmly on the floor, back straight, chin tucked to your chest and shoulders relaxed. Take regular breaks from looking at the screen. Use the extended breaks between lessons to stand up, stretch and make yourself a drink.

Digital Resource Spotlight Reading: If you are missing being able to browse in the Library, why not take a look at two resources designed to help you to find ideas for books to read? Go to the Library’s Books and Reading sub-page on SharePoint: https://teamrgs.sharepoint.com/sites/rgs/Academic/Library/SitePages/Books-andReading.aspx ...and you’ll find links to Who Next…? and Who Else Writes Like…? If you use those links, you will automatically be logged in. Both sites enable you to find suggested authors and books by entering the details of something that you’ve already enjoyed, with filters for genres, settings and other characteristics. Who Next…? Focuses on books for children and young adults and includes filters for different age bands. It also suggests specific titles and indicates where they are available as an e-book or audiobook.
